EPD EXPLANATION EPDs are “Expected Progeny Difference”. They are a useful tool in selection. EPD incorporate the individual animal with its ancestry performance. EPDs do not compare across cattle breeds. They are individual based per breed. EPDs indicate a probable variance above or below breed average for that trait for a given bull’s progeny. The accuracy of EPDs for calendar year bull calves is generally about 20% (one out of five times) so use it cautiously. One of several selection tools.

BULL F E ST 2 4

Welcome to Bullfest 24. It is only right to begin by thanking all of our bidders and buyers over the years. This sale, and our operations would not be where they are today without all of you, so again- thank you. As I write this, we are sitting in the middle of an extreme cold warning, setting record low temperatures for our region. Over the last few frigid cold days, watering bowls are freezing, equipment is struggling to operate, and many of us are in the middle of calving. Now although none of us are strangers to this cold and it is almost expected at some point throughout the year, I think it’s important to acknowledge that regardless of the weather, the cattle are bedded, fed, and checked upon and our routines stay the same. It isn’t always easy being in the industry we are all in- over the years producers throughout the province were challenged with fires, droughts, floods, fluctuating cattle prices and the list goes on but our resiliency and dedication to our industry is continuously demonstrated and supports just how much grit producers have. I’m unsure if thanks and appreciation is extended enough to everyone who chooses the life as a beef producer. It is not easy working in -40 and it’s not easy working in +40, but regardless of our circumstances we work for and prioritize our animals and it takes a whole lot of hard work, passion, care, dedication and love for what we do to make our industry what it is today. And I think that’s something to be proud of. As a whole, we have made strides towards improving sustainability and increasing efficiency of our operations and part of that is attributed to the ever evolving genetics of our cowherds. Each of us consignors believe the mother cow is the true foundation of our calf crops. They are required to maintain their own condition--not only raise a calf-- but do it well, all while re-breeding and maintaining pregnancy. This cannot be accomplished without high fertility, sufficient milk production, good udder conformation and on a solid foot. We each continuously strive to source out walking herd sires and utilize AI programs in our herds to try raise a walking herd sire that works for our customers and one that is profitable. As cliché’ as it may sound, each year the group of calves continuously improves, and we are proud of the set on offer this year. Please feel free to reach out to any of us or the BMS staff with any questions about any of the bulls on consignment. We also encourage you to take a walk through our pens before sale day to see the bulls as well as their dams. Sale day is also a day we like to show our appreciation to our customers, so we hope to see you there for lunch and some hospitality and a good visit. On behalf of myself and the rest of the Bullfest crew, we wish you all the best in 2024 and a successful upcoming breeding season! Cheers - Kaylee SOUTH SEVEN FARMS Rob, Linden & Nolan Stuart

We decided to breed our Polled Power heifers to Spartan and four of them ended up making this year’s bullpen. They are similar in stature, with all of them being dark red, moderate framed, and well muscled. STU 16L has the lowest birth weight of the group but that didn't stop him from weaning at 900lbs in September. He goes back to the Adonis 66Z cow, who is one of the few cows we’ve flushed in our herd. She's still in the herd at twelve years of age and sound. NON DILUTER

When we were searching for a new red bull the criteria was dark red, tons of hair, big square hip, ample spring of rib and backed by a proven cow. Well, Blackgold Lawmaker fit the bill. He's the easiest keeping bull and his sons and daughters are showing the same qualities.

The BG Lawmaker calves have consistently been 90-100lbs at birth and have calved unassisted. This bull came a little lighter in birth weight but it hasn't stopped his performance. His young dam put a low birth weight Cash bull through the sale last year as her first calf. She's two for two.

STU 87L is the calving ease bull in our group of reds. Throw in the Sheriff pedigree, who's known widely for his calving ease, and you've taken all the guesswork out. Again, he’s dark red and moves freely just like the rest of the Lawmaker bulls, and comes from a moderate framed, excellent uddered cow.

Working with Foresee Cattle Co on their nutrition program has been very enjoyable. Their attention to detail when developing their bulls and females is unmatched, resulting in an elite set of bulls for you to evaluate. I hope you can make it in person to see this set of bulls. The cowherd utilizes a customized mineral program that is balanced to their requirements throughout the year. This supports proper bull calf development from a young age. The bull development program is built to maximize forage utilization and gut health. All forages are sampled and analyzed to ensure quality feed sources are used. Once the calves are weaned, they are slowly transitioned to a TMR fed along with a complete feed pellet. The TMR is forage based and is designed to promote lean muscle growth, allowing the bulls to express their genetic potential. Rumen health is of upmost importance, which is why suitable protein sources and proper starch levels are fed to the bulls. Organic minerals are used both on the cow herd and sale bulls to ensure proper immune function and overall health.

2L is a real special calf who is dark red, deep bodied, square hipped, big footed, and has a real nice hair coat. He was raised by one of our best young cows who we purchased as one of the high selling red/black females at the annual Border City sale from our good friends at Mcinstosh Livestock. Mary Jane is one of their most prominent cow families, and our 27J female is what we would consider to be a model brood cow. She is level/square uddered, free moving, and powerful in her make up while still maintaining a feminine front. 2L is sire by the Erixon Asset bull who will also bring some calving ease to the table. 2L has the potential to sire a great group of calves for his new owners, and we are excited to see what he will do.

maternal sister to Blackgold Simmental

23L is part of the first group of bull calves to sell off the record setting 280,000 bull that was sold at Friday Night Lights. Once sold we knew we had to have a semen pack to give him a try, and we have been happy with the results. 23L is a real power and performance type calf who ranks in the top 50% of all epd categories in, a feat that is hard to do. His mother has been a real nice producer for us registering almost every calf and never misses. If you take a look at his weights he almost doubled his pounds from weaning to yearling gaining close to 5lbs per day. A bull who is massive hipped, big topped, nice fronted, and is easy to watch on the move. If you’re looking for a bull that will put pounds on your calves, 23L will do the trick.

Here is another dark red, good haired, great numbered son of Walk The Line off a real nice female we purchased a while ago from Crossroad Farms. We have almost registered every calf off the 5C female with bulls selling to commercial cattleman and a couple females retained in herd. As they have come into production we are sure happy with them. If you take a look at 5L he ranks in the top 2% for weaning and top 5% for yearling while still maintaining calving ease. 5L also ranks in the top 50% in all epd categories.
