On behalf of the Hadway Family and the whole Westway Crew we Welcome you to the 19th Edition of the Westway Farms Bull Sale. It’s always exciting compiling the Bull Sale catalogue of our bull offering because it represents years of evaluating and implementing breeding plans for our cattle program. We are very excited to have on offer 60+ bulls at our 2022 Sale. The offering includes Red and Black Simmental, Black Angus and some Westcross breeding.

When choosing bulls to keep in the bull pen our thoughts always go to the customer first. We value our customers and supplying bulls that can get a job done for you is a priority for us. We appreciate our customers and we stand behind our bulls 100% and would love to have the opportunity to assist you in selecting a bull that will work in your own program. Customer satisfaction is key and if you require any assistance when you review the catalogue please feel free to contact Andie, Brayden, Will or Tom and they will gladly review the lots. Only 25% of the bulls born on the farm make the sale so you can be confident that we are offering the Best of the Best.

We are very proud of the bulls we have developed for the 19th Annual Bull Sale. Our program relies on breeding cattle for the middle of the bell curve, therefore we do not breed for any extremes, maximums, or follow what is popular but rather what will work for our customers. We believe that a bull will make daughters that look like his mother. With this in mind, we strive to breed for a high quality, maternal cow herd because the sale bulls are a product of the cows they are out of. Focusing on these points allows us to create predictable genetics and bulls for the commercial cattlemen.

We continue to feed and finish our own cattle, customer cattle, and other cattle sourced externally.

This is another tool we utilize to enhance our sire selection when sourcing new genetics to provide to our customers. We are able to gain insight on which sire groups excel on feed, and provide quality results on the rail. We would be happy to work with existing, as well as new customers, to purchase your calves come fall.

Please let one of the Westway Farms team members know when you are marketing your calves, as we would love to have the opportunity to bid on them.

There is something for everyone in the 2022 offering including solid coloured and baldy bulls, as well as moderate birth weight bulls to performance cow bulls. There is a large group of red bulls where there is a bull for everyone no matter your selection criteria. The black bulls are very consistent in quality and the group is very uniform. Our Black Angus offering this year is smaller in quantity but the quality is very high.

We have once again partnered with Olds Auction Mart (OAM) to present our sale on their timed online sale platform. We know most of our customers are familiar with this site but if anyone needs assistance we encourage you to contact the OAM Team or ourselves for more information.

Please review the offering and if possible we invite you to attend our Open House on Wednesday, March 02, 2022 at the Farm from 10 a.m. - Dark. Please come and join us for some hospitality.

Last year our whole family all agreed the bonus of the Open House is having time to visit with people. The Open House will also give you an opportunity to view the bulls in the comfort of their own familiar surroundings and the chance to discuss the offering and evaluate the bulls to see which might be best suited for your own program. If you are unable to attend please remember the pens are always open for viewing so please just call and make arrangements for a visit. Anyone who tours bulls prior to the sale will be entered to win a 2022 Westway Bull Sale Credit in the amount of $1000.00. Two names will be drawn the morning of March 03 on Facebook Live.

If you are unable to view the bulls or if you are unable to bid online and wish to have someone bid for you, we ask you to contact anyone from the Westway Crew or the Westway Sale Team and they can assist you. You can be confident with our sales team expertise and their service. Please be assured that we will back all bulls that are purchased sight unseen.

Even though 2021 had challenges it blessed us with the Wedding of Andie and Bill and we were so grateful to have that window to have a celebration! 2021 also blessed us with lots of memories with our littles: Carter, Cal and Conlen and they bring us so much joy. Carter started Grade 1 this year and again we can say, “Where has the time gone!” Cal wants to be a farmer AND a fireman and Conlen is the cutest caboose trying to keep up with his siblings.

WFL BULL GUARANTEE Westway Farms stands behind their bulls and will ensure that customers are handled in a professional manner if an incident may occur. Please contact one of the Westway representatives immediately if there is any issue with your bull purchase as we can provide you with a bull to breed your cows. All animals will carry a standard breeding guarantee as specified by the Canadian Simmental Association. At no time shall the seller’s liability exceed the purchase price of the animals.

CATALOGUE INFORMATION The bulls are listed in the catalogue by age and are ordered oldest to youngest. The bulls will sell in the same order in the online close out as they are listed in the catalogue. All of the bulls have been sire or parent verified. Homo polled and Homo Black tests have also been done and are listed in the catalogue. The EPD’s are current and up-to-date as of publication date. Information in this document is believed to be accurate, if there is any additional updates the information will be provided on the Westway Farms website. NEW DELIVERY & BOARD Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as the bull is sold. A complimentary 10-day insurance policy will be applied to every bull in the sale following sale day. Bulls staying at the farm past the 10-day insurance period must be insured.

Westway Farms offers free delivery to central points in Western Canada. Any bulls picked up within 10 days of the sale will be given a $100 credit to your bull purchase(s). Bulls may be kept at the farm free of charge until May 1st. After May 1st, you will be charged $150 per month.

TERMS OF SALE & IN-HERD SEMEN USAGE All bulls sell under the standard terms and conditions as set forth by the Canadian Simmental Association, copies are available if needed. All bulls sell in their entirety, although Westway Farms reserves the right to collect semen on any bull that is offered in the sale for in herd use only. The semen collection will be at Westway’s expense, and the buyer’s convenience.

We all agree that the highlight of our bull sale is not just showcasing our bulls but more importantly it is having the opportunity to reconnect and catch-up with customers, neighbors and friends. Last year, we really enjoyed the Open House and the time it gave us to connect with people so we will again host an Open House on the farm, the day before the online sale close-out. The Westway Crew will be available to tour you through the bulls and answer any questions you may have about the sale offering. We will be set up to offer some Westway Hospitality and hope you are able to join us on March 2nd.

There will also be a number of Customer draws for visitors that view the bulls prior to the Sale. All names will be entered into the draw for two $1000 2020 Bull Sale Credits and the draw will take place the morning of March 3.

Bull development program The bulls spent the summer out grazing while consuming nothing but their mother’s milk. The bulls only had creep feed for the last two weeks prior to weaning, familiarizing them with eating dry matter and the ability to eat on their own before weaning. The bulls were weaned earlier than usual this year because of the dry conditions.

Weaning occured on August 9th where they were put on a high forage total mixed ration. Once the bulls were through the weaning process they were put back into a cereal stubble paddock where they were able to graze regrowth cereal crops and were supplemented with a high protein, forage based TMR ration. The bulls were then processed and sorted into their winter pens on November 29th and are maintained

on the high protein diet to enhance lean muscle development and maximize frame growth. The bulls have had more straw than an average year because silage and hay quantities are limited. The diet also contains a high quality protein supplement from Bullseye Feeds that includes a vitamin and chelated mineral package to help boost the bulls overall health and immunity. The bull’s overall diet is formulated to achieve a 3.0lbs ADG, allowing the bulls to show their true potential and ensure that longevity is a primary focus when growing the bulls. The bulls never have their feet trimmed before the sale and are semen tested by Didsbury Vet Clinic.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR VET DIDSBURY VETERINARY CLINIC

Welcome to the 2022 Westway Farms Bull Sale! All of the cattle at Westway Farms are on a complete herd health program and everyone at Didsbury Vet Services is proud to be able to partner with them as they work hard to bring you this outstanding group of bulls.

This herd health program for these bulls begins prior to even being born. All of the cows at Westway Farms receive a killed IBR/BVD vaccine, 8 way vaccine and Scour Bos 9 at preg check time in the fall as well as a topical Ivermectin for parasite control. This serves to maintain the overall health of all cattle present on the farm but also gets a headstart on the immunity of these bulls before they even hit the ground.

At birth, all calves receive Inforce 3 and Once PMH intranasally (IBR/PI3/BRSV and Mannheimia Haemolytica/ Pasteurella). This is followed by 2 doses of Bovi Shield Gold One Shot and Ultrabac 7 Somnubac (IBR/BRSV/BVD/PI3 and 7 way Clostridial plus Histophilus Somnus). These are administered between pasture turnout in the spring and

weaning in the fall. All sale bulls will have received 2 doses of Fusogard (footrot vaccine) as well, prior to leaving the farm after sale day. For parasite control, all calves receive a topical Ivermectin in the early fall and a topical Permethrin in the winter for lice control.

We will have completed a physical exam and semen evaluation of all bulls offered prior to sale day. Each bull will be assessed to determine soundness, excellent body condition score, and to be free of external visible defects. The semen evaluation includes physical palpation of the internal sex glands, testicles and epididymis and a visual exam of the penis during sample collection. A scrotal measurement is taken to ensure they are above minimum requirements for scrotal size. The semen is evaluated for motility and morphology and all bulls present at sale day will have received a passing grade above 70% or a decision deferred which means they will be reassessed and confirmed to pass prior to leaving the farm.
