4TH ANNUAL

- RAINBOW RIVER SIMMENTALS -

Bull & Female Sale

FRIDAY, MARCH 8, 2019 @ 1 PM CST - ON THE FARM - FISHER BRANCH, MANITOBA It’s that time of year again! Welcome to our 4th Annual Bull & Female Sale!

DOCILITY - SOUNDNESS- UDDER QUALITY- FERTILITY- EASY-FLESHING ABILITY- PERFORMANCE Those are the primary selection criteria we follow in our program. We believe in the strength of a good cow and we strive to produce cattle that are feed efficient on forages. Our main cow herd is solely fed forages and they are not supplemented with grain at any point during the year. On forage alone, they maintain good body condition, rebreed in a narrow 50 day window and raise a good calf. Those productive, low input cows are the most profitable and they are the backbone of the bulls and heifers we have on offer. Complete, accurate data collection and reporting is something I focus on in our program. You will notice that each bull and heifer has a BW, adjusted WW, adjusted YW, homo polled and homo black status reported. Most bulls have gestation length reported also. Embryo transfer (ET) bulls are an exception because the recipient dam can largely influence gestation length, therefore the gestation of an ET calf may not be an accurate representation of his own genetic potential. This same reason creates a bit of a grey area with the BW of ET calves. To record BW, every calf is weighed on a scale at approximately 24 hours after birth. There’s a good selection of performance bulls on offer, plus more calving ease options this year. Those bulls have “Calving Ease” written at the beginning of their footnote, but be sure to read the footnotes or give me a call for explanation on each bull’s suitability for the heifer pen or on young cows. We also have a couple of age advantaged bulls in this year’s offering, one of which is an exciting opportunity to purchase our young, calving ease herd bull, Kuntz Longmire 4D, in the prime of his life. The six replacment heifers on offer are nice females from good cow families. This 2019 offering represents an almost entirely refreshed sire line up. We still have some Riddler, Royal Red and MRL 67X sons on offer like previous years, but the majority of the offering is sired by new, breed leading A.I. sires, as well as our two walking sires. There are several lots that are sired by our $30,000 black herd sire, RF Impact 601C. This is Impact’s first progeny to sell and we are very pleased with their consistency and quality. We also have some fancy, calving ease oriented bulls and heifers on offer from our red calving ease sire, Longmire, who also sells in this sale. The Captain Scream, Westcott and Riddler progeny lead the charge in the power division of the bulls. Blue Chip, Kill Switch, Royal Red and Impact progeny offer a nice combination of maternal with performance. The MRL 67X, Bounty Hunter, Rambler, State of War and Longmire progeny specialize in calving ease. All of the bulls were managed in one pasture over the summer. Weaning was early due to the drought that plagued us in 2018. Bulls were weaned on September 1 and heifers on September 7. The heifers spent their summer on native grass pasture, were weaned, then turned back out to graze stockpiled grass until the end of October. We began pail feeding the heifers grain mid-December, but they have not been pushed and are in good breeding condition. Likewise, to protect the feet and overall longevity of the bulls, they have been developed slowly on a high-forage diet and a grain ration based on whole oats. Rather than pushing the bulls hard up until January then holding them back, we have chosen to develop them slowly and consistently until sale day. You may have noticed our new, earlier sale date for 2019. Just like last year, we are hosting our sale on the farm in our new calving barn/ sale facility. The bulls and heifers sell by video sale rather than being run through a ring, and we are fond of this format for the decreased handling and stress of the cattle on sale day. Although the cattle are not run through a ring during bidding, all sale bulls and heifers will be available for viewing in pens outside of the sale barn (and at any time prior to sale day). Be sure to come with enough time ahead of sale start to allow for viewing the cattle and to enjoy a complimentary lunch. We also welcome viewings ahead of sale day and I’m always happy to show you the dams and sisters backing the bulls. If you’d like to view the bulls or heifers ahead of sale day, please contact me to schedule a viewing. We look forward to hosting all of our past, present and future customers at our farm on Friday, March 8. If you can’t join us in person, please log on to DLMS and participate in the sale over the internet or contact our sale staff from Bohrson Marketing for assistance with absentee bidding. As always, if you have any questions feel free to give me a call or shoot me a text. Dustin and I hope to see you on sale day! Cheers,

What a tremendous bull to lead off our 2019 sale! Finalist has been special since the day he was born and in a league of his own at every stage of his life. He really puts it all together - moderate BW, power and performance with a predictable pedigree, stylish, docile and sound to the ground. Long bodied and stout made with a ton of rib shape, softness and muscle dimension, yet clean fronted with a herd bull head and a big time presence. The prepotent power and consistency of Captain Scream is evident in Finalist’s phenotype, plus the maternal greatness of his good Line Drive dam is what makes Finalist extra intriguing. Line Drive produced the famous Liner 56U and Liner 104S sires, plus many matriarch females at Springcreek. 50X is an easy-keeping, deep bodied, ideal type cow and still has an impeccable udder at 9 years of age. She’s an honest, proven cow, always producing the right kind and never skipping a beat in terms of fertility. 50X has had her 8th calf in 2019 and every calf has been born in the first three weeks of calving season. All five of her daughters are in production, two of which are producing at Springcreek. Her gorgeous Spark Plug daughter that we purchased in-dam stands at the top of our two year olds and her 6th daughter born in January is a very promising full sib to Finalist. The only son 50X raised prior to Finalist was a high seller for Springcreek. To top it all off, Finalist was born with a short 278 day gestation (7 days early), weaned off his dam Sept 1 at 916 lbs and had an actual YW of 1517 lbs on January 15. The breeding potential in Finalist is very strong and you’d have to drive a lot of miles to find another red bull as complete as him. We are proud to have raised a bull of this caliber, we believe he has a big future ahead and we will definitely utilize Finalist to advance our own program.

This is an impressive bull sporting the typical Captain Scream stamp - big rib, softness, thickness, eye appeal and performance. He has been a stand out from a very young age and I’ve always considered him to be next best to Finalist (Lot 1). We love our Captain Scream progeny - their consistency, power and very desirable phenotypes are second to none in both the bull and heifer pens. 20F’s dam is a powerful, deep ribbed, top producing cow with a tidy udder. Daughters from this bull should be real producers and his sons should be stout and attractive. He was extremely vigorous at birth and had a gestation of 286 days.

This deep, dark red bull is mothered by a real productive, big bodied, soggy, easy doing cow with an ideal udder. Her Riddler son was a high seller in last year’s sale to Black Omen Cattle Co in SK, plus she raised two other high selling bulls in previous years. A daughter sold to Sun Rise Simmentals and I have two productive daughters retained in herd, one of which raised our $16,100 high selling bull to Crossroad Farms in 2017. I was really hoping 44F would have been a heifer, but my loss is your gain! He’s deep ribbed, hairy and has adequate performance with WW and YW EPDs at the top 10% of the breed. Gestation 289 days.

Calving Ease. This feature bull is a unique combination of calving ease and performance. He is good haired, good footed and really docile. With just an 86 lb BW, an actual WW of 946 lbs off of a first calf heifer, plus good yearling performance, he should be universal enough to use on heifers or cows. His pedigree also speaks volumes about his breeding potential, being the first natural calf out of our $26,000 donor female, LRX Red Reeba 41D. She is a beautiful young cow with an impeccable udder and she is awfully hard to fault. We will be building our red program heavily around her in the future. There is a strong maternal punch in this bull with the likes of Liner 104S, LRX Red 111U and Kappes Sadie in his pedigree. I’m pretty sure he’ll make you want to keep all of his daughters! Gestation 290 days.

Calving Ease. If you’re looking for a heifer bull, take a good look at 4F. Deep, dark red, long bodied, smooth made, and check out his curve-bending performance numbers and EPDs! Raised by a first calf heifer from one of our best cow families on the farm, this guy started out at just 84 lbs then weaned off his young dam at 864 lbs September 1, equivalent to 69% of his dam’s body weight. At weaning, he ranked 5th out of 24 bulls in his contemporary group and also ranked 6th for YW performance. His dark red colour is stacked generations deep on both sides of his pedigree. 4F has a short gestation of 280 days. A really strong calving ease package here.

17F is a moderate framed bull with the typical deep body and large testicles that Blue Chip stamps on his sons. We purchased his dam for $10,250 as an open heifer after she won Junior Heifer Calf Champion at the Toronto Royal. Unfortunately she suffered a major injury mid-summer that forced 17F to get weaned prematurely. He fell a bit behind with performance because of that, but overall came along fairly well considering the drought conditions we dealt with this summer. Gestation 287 days.

This feature blaze face bull has always had a great look about him - a look that closely resembles his sire. He will be popular sale day and is a top contender amongst the first Blue Chip progeny to sell this year. Long bodied with big rib shape, stout, soft made, balanced, really nice fronted, good footed and big testicles. A very complete package. I liked this bull so much as a calf that I bred his dam back the same way. 19F’s dam is a hard working young cow with a tidy udder out of two black parents. 19F has strong performance numbers and his milk EPD is above breed average. His daughters should be excellent females. He was extremely vigorous at birth and had a gestation of 286 days.

This cow family has great udders with lots of milk. 15F’s EPDs and indexes are above breed average right across the board. I’m not sure that a photo can do this bull justice. To be fully appreciated, he needs to be seen in the flesh. 29F has been a favourite of mine all year and I consider him one of the top bulls in the sale. He is a really stout made bull with a square, thick hip, soft belly and good testicles. His dam is nothing short of a great producer and never fails to impress. Every bull she’s raised has topped our bull pen, including her Royal Red son who was a high seller in our 2018 sale to Lach Farms. Her sons are always top gainers too, including this bull who was the 3rd highest gainer in his contemporary group for YW. 29F will produce a consistent, heavy set of calves and his daughters will be the keeper kind. Gestation 290 days.

Talk about a pedigree packed full of greats! 40F and 60F are ET brothers from embryos I purchased from Lewis Farms. The bottom side of their pedigree boasts the famous Amber cow family - one of the most influential red cow families in the Lewis Farms program. On the top side, the famous Licious cow family is present. That’s two of the most prolific cow families, and four of the most influential donor cows in the red Simmental business, all stacked up front in the first three generations. Both bulls are long bodied, sound footed, have good testicles and are almost equal with adjusted WW and YW performance. 40F is darker red with a notch more balance, softness and natural muscle expression than 60F, whereas 60F may be a touch longer bodied and bigger framed than his brother.

This freight train is a big, powerful, impressive bull that stands out from the rest. 38F is outstanding in terms of masculinity, mass and performance. He has always had the look of a powerful herd bull from a young age. You have to admire how solid and thick he is without sacrificing any length of body. He is big nutted, big footed and moves out effortlessly. 38F offers big time performance too, weaning off his 10 year old dam on Sept 1 as the heaviest in a group of 30 bulls, plus weighing in as one of the top five heaviest bulls for YW. The bloodlines backing this bull make him even more potent. He is the natural calf from our leading donor cow, Linette 823U. This cow proves over and over again that she can make them great, and raise them even better! Combining the breeding potency and power of Westcott with Linette’s maternal strength, udder quality and consistency makes 38F a true sale feature. He will be easy to find sale day!

His EPDs are in the top end of the breed right across the board. Moderate calving ease. Breed leading performance. Above average milk. Breed leading maternal traits and longevity. Plus breed leading carcass weight and ribeye area. This bull is the whole package and you could bet the farm on the consistency you’d expect in his calf crop. Calving Ease. 11F is really soggy and deep ribbed with a good hair coat. I’ve always really liked the look of this bull. His dam is a larger framed, deep bodied cow with a perfect udder. She is raising a stout Springcreek Denali heifer calf this year that looks promising and another daughter was a high seller in last year’s bull sale. With just an 84 lb BW, short 284 day gestation, and decent CE and BW EPDs, I’m not sure that I’d call 11F a full-fledged heifer bull, but he could come close. Without a doubt he will calve easy on cows and second calvers and could work on well-developed heifers.

The dam of 73F is from our influential “Blackie” cow family known for their good foot quality, soundness, and easy keeping ability. 76T is my favourite “Blackie” female with her ideal structure and good udder. I showed her as a bred heifer and once more as a 7 year old cow, winning Reserve Champion Simmental Female at the Harding Fair in 2014. Both the dam and granddam of this bull have been flushed in our embryo program. 73F is a soft made, stout bull with sound feet and a good hair coat. He has a lot to offer as a breeding bull.

Calving Ease. This is a rare opportunity to invest in a proven calving ease sire in the prime of his life. We purchased Longmire for $11,500 in 2017 to use in our heifer pen and on some big, power cows that need a shot of calving ease. We appreciate his sound structure, good foot quality, quiet disposition, thickness and easy keeping ability. We love the look of his calves - they’re eye appealing and sound. Check out his progeny selling as Lots 6, 22, 34 and 35. Longmire calved well for us with his first calf crop in 2018. Calves from first calf heifers averaged 82 lb at birth and big power cows averaged 96 lb BW on their calves. Gestation on cows and heifers ranged between 281 and 288 days. We will have a few more Longmire calves born by sale day, but to no fault of his own, he was under-utilized last year and that’s why we have decided to sell him. We have changed our heifer breeding program to utilize 100% A.I., so he won’t be seeing the same exposure going forward that we had originally planned. We feel he will serve a greater purpose walking for someone else’s herd.

15E is a virgin, two year old bull that has been managed with our herd bulls since last June. He is sound structured, long bodied and well-balanced with good feet and legs. He’s a really good natured bull that is very easy to work with. 15E’s dam is a good producer that is big framed and long bodied with a super udder. She has a daughter working at Spring Creek Simmentals that has put several good bulls through their sale and a powerful heifer in our keeper pen. 15E will be a good investment to cover some extra cows this year.

This lead off heifer is one we would love to keep. She’s a big ribbed, long bodied, hairy female with a very quiet disposition. Her pedigree is jam packed with very proven cattle known for their maternal strengths and calving ease. Even though she is double bred to more calving ease oriented sires, she still packs a good performance punch, ranking in the top third of the heifer pen for both adj WW and adj YW. Her first calver dam did a great job on this first effort, which speaks to the maternal goodness that backs 25F. 11D is showing a lot of promise to be a great producer and 20B is one of my favourite cows in the herd, always raising an impressive calf no matter how she’s bred.

Lot 32 and 33 are the first daughters to sell off our $30,000 walking herd sire, RF Impact 601C. We really like the progeny Impact has given us - very consistent in terms of depth of rib, softness, hair quality and overall eye appeal. We expect Impact daughters to make great cows. This heifer carries his stamp, will probably mature with a small-medium frame size like her dam and should have a good udder.

This is the only Linette daughter we are offering in this year’s sale. Her flushmate brother sells as Lot 15 and maternal brothers sell as Lots 14 and 16. She’s an ET heifer and one that was on my keeper list all year. The Royal Red x Linette mating should translate into some superior maternal strength in this female. 61F’s dam, Blacksand Linette 832U, is now 11 years old but still looks like a five year old, in excellent condition, still sound and fluid on the move, still flushing like a champ and still raising some of the best we have to offer.

This is a younger heifer with a really admirable phenotype. I like the capacity she carries in her middle third, awesome hair coat, and overall balance and eye appeal. If she was a month older, she wouldn’t be leaving our program. 66F’s dam is a little larger framed with a good udder. Her first calf was a fancy Navigator heifer that now works for Fehrock Farms.

69F is an early March born Longmire daughter stemming from our “Blackie” cow family. Her young dam is made exactly how I like them - moderate framed but big in capacity, thick, soggy, and sound with an absolutely perfect udder. She just calved in mid January with a nice little Impact heifer. I struggled with deciding to sell 69F because I believe she has a lot of potential, but I think her younger age makes her a better fit for a late spring/ summer breeding program. She didn’t cooperate on picture day so her photo doesn’t really do her justice.

You have to appreciate the profile of this little sweetheart. She’s always caught my eye ever since she was a baby. Her young dam is a beautiful Riddler daughter that is moderate framed, big capacity and has a super udder. Her granddam was a real producer that we lost way too soon. The dam of 74F is a maternal sister to the dam of Lot 32. 74F has a strong pedigree and if it weren’t for her young age, I wouldn’t be selling her. Just like Lot 34, I think this heifer will fit well into a late spring/ summer breeding program.
