Reflections As we reflect over the past 25 years in the Simmental seedstock business, we have seen many changes. Our first sale offering consisted of 10 yearling traditional Fullblood bulls and 135 red-white-face Simmental open heifers. This year’s sale offering includes 55 many generation red or black two-year old polled bulls, 14 yearling red and black bulls and 80 purebred Simmental females.

Our cowherd continues to improve in udder quality, disposition, fertility, fleshing ability and rapid growth. Our cows have the ability to forage for themselves with minimal machinery and diesel fuel. We have moved the calving season from January/February to April/ May. Now sale bulls are sold as coming two year olds, conservatively developed to breed and last for years. These bulls are born unassisted, with moderate birth weights. They are red, black and polled with early maturity and rapid growth.

Some things haven’t changed over the past 25 years:

• the pursuit of improving our cowherd,

• the excitement of spring calving,

• the fun of selecting new herd sires,

• travelling and delivering sale bulls,

• the enjoyment of working with great people in the cattle industry and

• the time and energy required to manage a seedstock operation.

There has been significant change from our first catalog printed at the local newspaper office to the glossy full color options available now. The rapid changing technology world has brought ease to taking pictures and videos. It has also given us the ability to manage a detailed website and the opportunity to broadcast the sale live over the Internet with buyers bidding online.

During the past 25 years we have said goodbye to many wonderful friends and great cattlemen, our sympathy goes out to their families. However, it is very rewarding to see customers who stood ringside at our first sale still purchasing Adair bulls 25 years later.

We would like to sincerely thank the Provost Livestock Exchange staff for their assistance, support and management in the marketing of our cattle. Our involvement in the Simmental industry has given us the opportunity to have some great experiences and build some wonderful friendships. SIMMENTAL TWO YEAR OLD SALE BULL NOTES • Born May 2016 on stock-piled pasture expressing excellent calving • Bulls received 8 lbs of whole oats starting in November 2017 and ease and calf vigour then Dec 8 we added 5.33 lbs of rolled barley. We purchased this dark cherry red, powerful, high performance bull at the 2014 TNT “Genetic explosion” sale in Almont, ND. His sire DCR Mr Moon Shine X102 has produced some exceptional sons including TNT 90 Proof high selling bull at the 2014 TNT sale to Genex Inc and C Diamond Simmentals. In the 2013 sale paternal brothers were high sellers with TNT Bootlegger Z268 selling to Semex and Trade Wind Ranch. As well as two Moon Shine sons (TNT Moon Walk Z266 and TNT Ninety Proof Z203) selling to the Lazy S Ranch, Mayerthorpe. We are impressed with the maternal value of the TNT Moonlight daughters. TNT Moonlight is Homozygous Polled and loaded with explosive genetic potential. Owned by Adair Ranch. Sire of lots 1 - 13.

This group of cows is a good representation of our Black program. Unfortunately, after the 2015 breeding this group of cows was open due to a bull fertility problem going undetected during the breeding season.

We then decided to synchronize them and they calved in August the following season. We decided to set them up as a feature for our 25th Bull Sale. They were exposed to TNT Stagecoach C286 from April 21 to May 15. This is a unique opportunity to purchase black registered cow/calf pairs.

This group of heifers represents a cross section of pedigrees from our program. Similar to the many sale bulls in this sale and past sales. They were managed alongside the heifers we retain for our own replacements; the same breeding and health protocols. They where synchronized on a five day plan in consultation with Dr Rob Stables, DVM, Bow Valley Genetics and artificially inseminated to either WS Prime Beef Z8 or PCC SSCC Downtown 1719B on July 25 and then pasture exposed to Adair Ranch 401D (lot 39), Bar KT 38D (lot 48)) and Adair Ranch 464D from August 19 to September 8. The heifers were ultrasounded this fall by Dr Justin Kristjansson, DVM, for pregnancy and sex of the calf (sexing the embryos at 30 to 50 days tends to be 85% accurate). This is an exciting opportunity to purchase Adair Ranch genetics.

TERMS & CONDITIONS Terms: The terms of this sale are cash or cheque payable at par at sale location unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made previous to the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released.

Bid: Every animal consigned to the sale must be sold by auction. No private sales will be allowed except as otherwise provided for in the terms and conditions. No by-bidding will be permitted. Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder.

Disputes: In some cases of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final.

Purchaser’s Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time.

Announcements: Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Bidders are therefore cautioned to pay attention to any such announcements.

Certificate of Registry: The proper Registration or Recordation paper, as the case may be, will be duly transferred and furnished to the buyer for each animal after the settlement has been made.

Breeders Guarantee: Bulls – Should any bull fourteen (14) months of age or over, fail to prove a breeder after being used on cows known to be breeders, the matter shall be reported in writing to the seller within six (6) months following the date of purchase or six (6) months after the bull has reached fourteen (14) months of age. The seller will then have the right and privilege of six (6) months to prove the bull a breeder. No guarantee is given that the semen collected from the bull will be suitable for artificial insemination. Heifers – All have been palpated and guaranteed open and in good health by a local veterinarian.

Exception to Guarantee: In cases where the animal is subject to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale, the guarantee shall be null and void.

Settlement: Transportation charges on animals returned to the seller for account of the purchaser. No incidental expenses such as fee, A.I., signing fees, interest, veterinary charges, etc. will be charged by either party when making settlement. If the seller is successful in proving the animal a breeder then said animal will be reclaimed by the purchaser at his expense. Should the seller fail to so prove the animal is a breeder, then the buyer is guaranteed a satisfactory replacement, F.O.B. the ranch or the refund of the actual price. In no event shall the seller be responsible for more than the purchase price. Should a dispute arise over the quality of the replacement animal, the Sales Management will appoint a mediator.

Accidents: Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the Sales Management, Auctioneer, or Sellers assume any responsibility in this manner and disclaims any liability legal or otherwise in the event of the accident or loss of property.

Rights and Obligations: The above terms and conditions shall constitute a contract between the buyer and the seller and equally binding to both. Resale of animals following purchase in this sale shall constitute a separate transaction. The rights and obligations of the two parties connected thereto are not covered by the terms and conditions of this sale.

Bull Semen Retention: We are selling full possession, full salvage, plus 2/3 semen revenue. This means any semen sold on any of the bulls, Adair Ranch will receive 1/3 the selling price per unit. We also reserve the right to collect semen on any of the sale bulls, for our own use. This semen will be collected at our expense and the buyer’s convenience.
