s we close out another year at On The Move, we feel grateful and excited for what is ahead. This year has been full of momentum. We have pushed into new markets, strengthened the relationships that built us, and found fresh ways to support the industries we serve.

Together, we have watched our trucks roll into new cities, new industries, and new communities. We have partnered with franchise owners launching their first vehicles, storage operators enhancing their rental programs, and real estate teams using their trucks to elevate their brands. Every story reminds us why we do what we do: to help businesses stand out, serve their customers, and keep moving forward with confidence.

How Hardy’s Self Storage Keeps Growth in Motion

F

or the Hardy family, self storage isn’t just a business — it’s a legacy built on trust, community, and staying ahead of the curve. What began as a single facility founded by Paul and Bonnie Hardy nearly forty years ago, has grown into one of the Mid-Atlantic’s most respected independent storage operations.

Nearly four decades later, Hardy’s Self Storage has not only expanded across Delaware and Maryland but has done so while keeping its family-run values and its trucks front and center. As they approach a major milestone — celebrating 40 years in business (1986–2026) — their formula for success remains rooted in quality, consistency, and care.

“Our mission is simple: to provide clean, secure self-storage units at competitive prices while delivering the best customer experience possible,” says Norman Hardy, Managing Partner at Hardy Development Inc. and Owner/Operator of Hardy’s Self Storage. “Our OTM trucks not only expand our service offerings but also serve as powerful tools for brand recognition — a rolling billboard for Hardy’s Self Storage.”

Built on Vision and Family Values

After a successful career in the retail lumber industry, The Hardy story began in 1986, when Paul Hardy was searching for a business with fewer moving parts and lower overhead.

“It wasn’t until Paul attended a self storage seminar and had a conversation with self storage industry legend Buzz Victor that he knew self storage was just what he was looking for,” Norman explains. “After consulting with Buzz, Paul developed the first Hardy’s Self Storage in Wichita Falls, TX in 1986 by converting what was previously a lumberyard to a 20,000 square foot facility with canopy RV parking. This facility was also where the truck rentals started, although, with a third-party truck rental provider.”

In 1989, a converted auto parts store in Bel Air, Maryland, became the Hardys’ second facility — and their first fully climate-controlled location.

“Ancillary services we introduced included truck rentals, packing and shipping, and the sale of boxes and moving supplies,” Norman recalls.

“Over the years, we’ve contracted with several third-party truck rental companies, but we found many challenges. The majority of truck rentals didn’t translate into storage unit rentals, and the training and time spent managing rentals and reservations weren’t worth the investment.

Customers often blamed us for poorly maintained trucks or for not having vehicles available when reservations were made through the national call center. This also hurt employee

morale, as our staff had to deal with the frontline frustrations from these issues.”

The Turning Point

By the early 2000s, the family had decided to end its contract with a popular rental truck provider, frustrated by poor

customer experiences and lack of local control. But soon after, a new opportunity presented itself.

“Paul and I had still felt there was a need to provide our storage customers with an in-house truck rental option and had conversations with the On The Move CEO continued on page 22

and appreciated his vision and alternative solution to provide truck rentals for our customers.

We started with a E350 15 foot box truck. We had a local graphics company add vinyl company branding and advertised another local business on the rear of the truck that shared commercial space at one of our locations. From there we participated in the OTM one way leasing program and purchased another E450 17 foot box truck. We’ve since added 2 new Ford Transit 350 High Roof vans, revamped our vinyl wraps and have plans to add a new truck and/or van at each of our future facilities in development” Norman says.

That decision reshaped the way Hardy’s approached customer service and marketing. The trucks didn’t just fill a need — they became part of the brand’s identity.

“OTM has been a key driver in expanding our self-storage business,” adds Steven Hardy, Managing Partner at Hardy Development Inc. and Owner/Operator of Hardy’s Self Storage.

“By offering customers a convenient, one-stop solution for moving and storage, we’ve been able to attract more clients, increase occupancy rates, and enhance overall customer satisfaction. The added convenience of on-site truck rentals has made the moving process smoother, helping us stand out from competitors and grow our business steadily.”

Marketing on Wheels

Hardy’s doesn’t see its trucks as just a rental amenity, they’re mobile billboards that keep their brand rolling through town. Each vehicle is parked roadside when not in use, catching the eye of local traffic and reinforcing brand visibility in every community they serve.

“Our storage tenants appreciate the fact we only rent our trucks to our storage customers. Our trucks are cared for like personal vehicles, serviced regularly, kept clean and available for storage tenants at move-in, move-out or anytime during their tenancy,” Norman explains.

Growth Through Innovation and Teamwork

He shares one story that captures the family’s hands-on approach: “I had a customer who wanted to rent a unit for his motorcycle, but it didn’t run, and he didn’t have any way to get it to us. I used our moving truck to drive to his house, push his motorcycle up the loading ramp and drive it and him back to our facility to rent the unit. That tenant is still a customer with us 7 years later.”

In addition to their move-in special, providing free truck use for new tenants, the Hardys have found meaningful ways to give back. “We allow our commercial nonprofit customers additional usage of the trucks for community events,” Norman says.

“Not only helping out our communities but giving our business more exposure with our company branded wrapped trucks. One customer is The Empty Stocking Fund non-profit who uses the trucks to transport donated toys to and from their storage unit to give underprivileged children gifts at Christmas. We have another customer who runs summer camps for underprivileged youths and we allow the non-profit to use the truck to transport all of the camp-related items from their storage unit to the camp at the start of the season, and then again when camp is over and they store items until next year. We still complete truck rental contracts with these customers and take deposits so we comply with insurance requirements, but don’t charge these customers other than having them refill the gas tank upon return.”

As the company continues to expand, technology and teamwork remain at the core of Hardy’s operations. “Growing up working at our facilities through high school and college breaks gave me handson experience in every part of the business,” Norman says. “It’s been eye-opening to see how much the industry has evolved over the past decade. By leveraging technology like on-site rental kiosks, call centers, and streamlined three-step online rentals, we’re able to work smarter, not harder.”

He adds, “I’m constantly asking our managers, ‘What can we do to make your job easier?’ and ‘What feedback are you hearing from our customers?’ Steven and I both started out managing facilities ourselves, and by practicing decentralized command, we’ve empowered our managers to take the reins on the front lines and make decisions with confidence.”

Hardy’s also upgraded its truck rental process through On The Move’s Action 2.0 software. “Moving from a paper transaction truck rental process to Action 2.0 has improved customer satisfaction, ease of completing rentals and checking trucks in/ out. Our managers appreciate the software calendar to verify truck rentals aren’t overbooked, and the limited required paperwork” mentions Steven.

Behind every milestone are loyal employees who’ve grown alongside the company. “We are proud of our employees and value their dedication to our business,” Norman shares. “Our longest standing employee Mary Styer just celebrated her 27th anniversary working at Hardy’s Self Storage, and Will Taylor has been with continued on page 24

us 20 years! We have several other employees who have been with us almost 10 years, and we have been very fortunate to have little employee turnover.”

Looking Ahead

Today, Hardy’s Self Storage operates six facilities with three more in progress — a seventh under construction in Bridgeville, Delaware, an eighth fully entitled in Laurel, DE and a 9th being planned in North East, MD. An additional expansion is also fully entitled in Selbyville, DE with site work starting by year end, continuing their measured, long-term expansion.

“We’ve grown steadily and organically, without bringing in outside investors or partners,” Norman says. “That’s important to us because it means we can move quickly, innovate freely, and focus on what matters most, delivering the best possible experience for our customers, not just profits for investors.”

“As a family-owned small business it makes us proud to serve our communities which we reside in and work with regularly,” Steven reflects. “Being owner/operated we have a very thorough knowledge of our tenant base and are always willing to work with our tenants when uncertain situations arise. We are proud to grow this 2nd generation business and develop new class A facilities to serve our communities.”
