Hey Y’all!

W

We are so excited for the 2026 Kendall County Wild Game Dinner. We hope you’re ready to have a great night & help us raise money for the kids! We can’t do it without your generous support. It’s hard to believe that this is the 15th year of our event. We want to give a very special thank you to Beca Short, whose vision and hard work started this event and helped grow it into one of the best Wild Game Dinners in the state. As Beca steps into retirement from leading the event, we are so grateful for everything she has poured into it over the years. She won’t be far from the action, but we are excited to introduce your 2026 WGD Board: Reagan Harris, Starla English, and Kris Pressler. All three of us have been involved over the years in various ways and are honored to carry the torch as we look forward to this year’s event. Each year the event allows us to raise funds for the youth of Kendall County & surrounding counties through agriculture. The money raised from the 2025 event helped us, along with KCJLA, to present $61,500 in total scholarships to kids. We also were able to help 59 kids across 16 Texas counties at the 2026 Hill District Grandstand Sale. We contributed $100k to our annual livestock show sale. We love supporting our 4H kids, so this year we have given $3,000 to help fund their state trip. We have some of the best cook teams that show up each year. This year we have a new team with El Toro Ranch bringing Nilgai Bulgogi Bowls to the menu, we can’t wait to taste it. This event isn’t possible without the hundreds of volunteers that give us countless hours of their time gathering sponsorships, donations for the auctions, setting up, selling tickets & drinks and everything else that goes into this event. We say a huge THANK YOU for all you do, it wouldn’t be possible without you. A couple of new things, you can purchase tickets prior to the event & save time at the gate. Gate entry will be CASH ONLY and gates open at 4:00pm. Drink tickets will be cash only as well. We can’t wait to see y’all & have a great time,

Reagan Harris, Starla English & Kris Pressler

COOK TEAMS

THE TEAMS BEHIND THE TASTE!

A

OUR COOK TEAMS BRING THE FIRE, THE FLAVOR AND THE FUN TO THE WILD GAME DINNER

At the center of the Kendall County Wild Game Dinner are the cook teams—the dedicated volunteers who fire up the pits, perfect their recipes and serve up the incredible food that keeps guests coming back year after year. Their time, talent and enthusiasm are a huge part of what makes the Wild Game Dinner such a special tradition. While every cook team plays an important role in making the event a success, a handful have been part of the Wild Game Dinner since the very beginning. Sip N’ Shooters, Grill Billies, Pitlicious, Chowboys and Road Kill Grillers have been cooking with us since year one, helping turn a great idea into the community tradition it is today. We’re incredibly grateful for their many years of dedication—and for all of the cook teams who continue to make the Wild Game Dinner something worth coming hungry for! This year we look back at two of our original cook teams, Sip N’ Shooters and Grill Billies.

GRILL BILLIES 2013 WGD

GRILL BILLIES

The Grill Billies cook team is one of the largest ones to cook at the Wild Game Dinner and they need as much manpower as they can get because their Jalapeño Bacon Wrapped Quail Poppers create one of the longest lines at the Dinner! The team is led by Wayne Zoeller with the help of countless other friends, family and wives. “Cooking for the Wild Game Dinner is a lot of work, but a lot of fun. We do it because every year we have a good time. We are glad to support the KC Wild Game Dinner!”

SIP N SHOOTERS

This cook team loves to have a good time! Led by Dutch Short, husband of Beca Short, founder of the Kendall County Wild Game Dinner, this team cooks up some mean chicken fried axis meat! As the husband of Beca, Dutch and his friends were most likely signed up to cook before they had ever even heard of the Wild Game Dinner! “We have cooked every year since the event began,” said Dutch. “It is one of our favorite weekends of the year, we have such a good time!” If you are looking to have some fun, this team and all the friends and family who stop by to help out, sure know how to have a great time, all while cooking up tons of tasty food.

We Need You!

A Hill Country Tradition with a Purpose

Year after year, the Kendall County Wild Game Dinner brings thousands of people together for an evening of great food, exciting raffles and auctions, games, vendors and plenty of fun. But behind all of the excitement is a purpose that has remained at the heart of the event from the beginning: supporting the youth of Kendall County. What started as a great community gathering has grown into one of the Hill Country’s most anticipated annual events—and an important fundraiser dedicated to creating opportunities for local youth. In 2021, the Wild Game Dinner became the premier fundraiser for the Kendall County Junior Livestock Association, bringing together two organizations with a shared commitment to the young people of Kendall County. “Our missions were aligned, with both organizations focused on serving the youth of Kendall County through education and agriculture,” said KCJLA President Joe Lozano. “Joining forces allowed us to streamline our efforts and raise even more money to provide opportunities through scholarships, educational programs and leadership camps.” Each year, members of the KCJLA Board of Directors work alongside volunteers from local businesses and organizations, as well as countless community members who simply want to lend a hand and support the Wild Game Dinner and its worthy cause. “We could not do it without them,” Lozano said. “There are so many people who step up because they believe in what we are doing and want to help support these kids.”

BUYERS NEEDED FOR OUR KCJLA STOCKSHOW & SALE IN JANUARY 18

WILD GAME DINNER | 2026

But supporting Kendall County youth doesn’t end when the Wild Game Dinner is over. This January, the Kendall County Junior Livestock Association is asking local businesses, organizations and individuals to once again show up for our community’s youth at the annual Junior Livestock Show and Sale. These young exhibitors have spent months—and in many cases the better part of a year—raising, caring for and preparing their projects. Along the way, they have learned valuable lessons in responsibility, hard work, perseverance and dedication. When buyers raise their hands at the auction, they are doing much more than purchasing an animal or project. They are showing these kids that their hard work matters and that their community is behind them. Growing buyer participation is incredibly important to the continued success of the sale, and KCJLA encourages more local businesses and community members to get involved this year. Whether you are a longtime buyer or have never attended the auction before, January is the perfect opportunity to come out, support these hardworking young people and make a direct investment in the future of Kendall County.

Can’t Attend? Consider Joining or Starting a Buyers Cartel...

Many local businesses and organizations form buying cartels, or buying groups, where one or two people are in charge of bidding on the livestock projects for many organizations. The individual organizations still get announced at the auction under the Cartel name. It’s a great way to support our local youth even if you aren’t able to attend the auction.

GIVING BACK

HELPING LOCAL YOUTH SUCCEED

T

The Kendall County Wild Game Dinner and Kendall County Junior Livestock Association continue to invest in the future of local youth through their support of both 4-H and FFA programs. Recently, the organizations helped sponsor local 4-H members attending the Texas 4-H RoundUp, giving students the opportunity to represent Kendall County while building leadership skills and gaining valuable experiences. Their support also extended to Boerne FFA with a $3,500 donation toward the purchase of a new sheep and goat walker for the Boerne ISD Ag Barn, as well as sharpshooter harnesses for the FFA shooting team. Through contributions like these, the Kendall County Wild Game Dinner and Kendall County Junior Livestock Association are helping provide local students with the tools, opportunities and experiences they need to learn, compete and succeed. About the Texas 4-H RoundUp Texas 4-H RoundUp is a premier annual event for high school youth to experience education, competition, leadership development, networking, recognition, career exploration, and personal growth. “Texas 4-H RoundUp represents the culmination of a year’s worth of hard work and dedication by 4-H members. Its purpose is to complement the county 4-H program and offer educational experiences in various fields, including Agriculture & Livestock, Family & Community Health, Leadership & Citizenship, Natural Resources, and STEM.” More than 50 contests are held at the county, district, and state levels to test skills gained by 4-H members. In addition to contests, there are College/Career Fairs and educational workshops throughout the week for those interested in non-competitive events. Kendall County was represented by 19 qualifying youths and 2 individuals that competed in invitational contests.

About the Boerne ISD Ag Barn The Boerne ISD Ag Barn and Animal Science Center is open to district students from both Boerne High School and Champion High School. It provides a space for students to raise and house their sheep, goats and pigs for participation in stock shows. The sheep and goat walker donation was a much needed addition to the barn so students can properly exercise their animals and prepare them for showing.

PROFILE

Guiding the Next Generation to Christ through the Outdoors Cross Trail Outfitters is a Christian hunting and fishing club for boys ages 7-20 with the cornerstones of building men, preserving our heritage, and sharing their faith.

S

Sometimes the best conversations happen far away from screens, schedules and everyday distractions—maybe while sitting quietly in a deer blind, casting a line into the water or gathered around a campfire at the end of a long day. For Cross Trail Outfitters, those moments are about much more than hunting and fishing. They are opportunities to build relationships, develop character and introduce young people to a deeper connection with their faith. Cross Trail Outfitters, or CTO, is a Christian youth hunting and fishing organization with a mission of “Guiding the next generation to Christ through the outdoors.” Founded in 2004, the organization primarily serves boys ages 7 to 20, using a shared love of the outdoors as a way to provide mentorship, discipleship and experiences that many young people may otherwise never have the opportunity to enjoy. At a time when so much of childhood takes place in front of a screen, CTO offers something refreshingly different: time spent outdoors, learning practical skills, building friendships and discovering an appreciation for God’s creation. The organization is built around three cornerstones—building men, preserving our heritage and sharing their faith. Those principles come to life through year-round activities that include

40

WILD GAME DINNER | 2026

hunting and fishing outings, summer camps, Sportsmen’s Nights and family events. Participants can learn everything from shooting and firearm safety to fishing techniques and other outdoor skills, all while being surrounded by mentors committed to helping them grow in confidence, responsibility, leadership and faith. But experience isn’t a requirement. One of the important aspects of Cross Trail Outfitters is its ability to introduce young people to the outdoors who may not have someone in their own family who hunts or fishes. A child doesn’t necessarily need to grow up in a hunting family or already know how to cast a line. CTO provides the mentors, instruction and opportunities to learn. And those mentors are an important part of what makes the organization work. CTO describes itself as a relationship-based ministry. Rather than focusing solely on individual hunting or fishing trips, its goal is to develop lasting relationships with youth and their families. Through those relationships, adult leaders have opportunities to teach outdoor skills while also helping young men navigate the challenges of growing up and encouraging them to become strong, Christ-centered leaders in their families and communities. Safety is also a priority. Volunteers who lead activities are required to complete a vetting process along with appropriate certifications and safety training. CTO utilizes MinistrySafe for child-safety training and background checks. Here in Texas, Cross Trail Outfitters continues that mission through local chapters, including one right here in the Hill Country, led by Ryan Martinez. The Hill Country chapter provides local kids with yearround opportunities for hunting and fishing adventures, outdoor skills training and Christ-centered mentorship. Along the way, participants are encouraged to develop character and leadership, form lasting friendships and learn the importance of stewardship—both of the outdoors and of the opportunities they have been given. “At the heart of everything we do is Christ, we experience the joy of the outdoors and give the glory back to God,” said Martinez. The organization also emphasizes respect for wildlife, habitat, other people and property. Its Sportsman’s Pledge encourages members to obey hunting and fishing laws, care for their equipment, respect the animals they pur-

sue, treat others with kindness and continue growing in their relationship with God. It’s an approach that recognizes something generations of outdoorsmen and women have long understood: some of life’s most valuable lessons can be learned outside. Patience comes while waiting for a fish to bite. Responsibility comes from learning to safely handle equipment. Respect grows through understanding wildlife and conservation. Confidence comes from mastering a skill that once seemed difficult. And friendships have a way of forming naturally when people spend time together away from the distractions of everyday life. For Cross Trail Outfitters, however, the ultimate goal goes even deeper. The hunt may bring a young person through the door, and the fishing trip may create the memory, but the relationships built along the way are where the organization hopes to make its greatest impact. According to Martinez, “We have seen entire families come to Christ through the impact the camps and outdoor activities have on a child, and that is truly a blessing.” Since its founding, Cross Trail Outfitters has expanded beyond its original community and provided thousands of opportunities for young people to experience hunting, fishing, mentorship and fellowship. Here in the hill country, that mission is continuing—one outing, one conversation and one young person at a time. Because sometimes getting kids outside isn't just about showing them how to hunt or fish. It's about giving them room to grow.

H

H

Be sure to stop by and visit Cross Trail Outfitters at this year’s Wild Game Dinner! For the past five years, CTO has brought its popular BB Gun Range to the event, giving guests a chance to test their aim on everything from traditional paper targets to spinners and even army men. It’s a fun, hands-on activity that has become a favorite part of the Wild Game Dinner experience!

H

H

Cross Trail Outfitters has been incredibly blessed by the generosity of faithful donors who continue to support its mission. However, one of the organization’s greatest ongoing needs is finding landowners willing to partner with CTO by providing access to property for hunting, fishing and camping experiences. These partnerships play a vital role in helping CTO create meaningful outdoor opportunities for the youth they serve. OCTOBER 17 TH, 2026

Kendall County Wild Game Dinner Supports Hill District Grandstand

S

Supporting youth has always been at the heart of the Kendall County Wild Game Dinner’s mission, and this past year that support reached well beyond the borders of Kendall County. Through the Hill District Grandstand Stock Show, the Kendall County Wild Game Dinner donated $30,000 to 59 young exhibitors representing 16 different counties, helping reward the hard work and dedication of 4-H and FFA members from across the region. The organization also stepped up as a $1,500 sponsor of the steer show, further supporting an event dedicated to giving young people in agriculture the opportunity to compete, learn and succeed. It is an investment the Wild Game Dinner hopes others throughout the community will be inspired to make as well. The Hill District Grandstand Show celebrates and supports the hard work and dedication of young people in raising livestock and ag mechanic projects. In 2021, the stock show world witnessed the resilience of participating families and in 2022, the Grandstand Committee and the representatives of the Hill Country District Junior Livestock Show united their efforts. Now, together, they are dedicated to building a lasting tradition. SUPPORT THE SHOW There are three fantastic ways to support The Grandstand! LIVESTOCK

AN OLD THREAT RETURNS

F

WHAT TEXAS LIVESTOCK OWNERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT NEW WORLD SCREWWORM

For Texas ranchers and livestock producers, protecting the health of their animals has always meant keeping a close eye on what’s happening in the pasture. Today, an old threat is once again giving producers a new reason to be watchful. The New World screwworm is a parasitic fly capable of causing serious injury—and even death—in cattle, sheep, goats, horses and other warm-blooded animals. Once eradicated from the United States after decades of coordinated efforts by livestock producers and animal health officials, its return has renewed concerns throughout the agricultural community. Unlike many flies whose larvae feed on dead or decaying tissue, New World screwworm larvae infest open wounds and feed on living tissue. Even something as small as a cut, scrape, tick bite or wound associated with routine livestock management can provide an opportunity for infestation. Without quick treatment, the damage can progress rapidly. For a state where livestock production is deeply connected to both the economy and way of life, awareness is one of the most important tools producers have. Knowing the signs, regularly checking animals and understanding when and how to report a suspected case can help protect individual herds while also helping safeguard Texas agriculture as a whole. As New World screwworm once again becomes a concern closer to home, livestock owners are being encouraged to stay informed, stay observant and take this threat seriously.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR • Wounds that won’t heal • Unusual swelling or irritation • Foul-smelling wounds • Drainage from wounds • Visible maggots in a wound • Animals repeatedly bothering a wound site

STAY INFORMED

Receive the most recent New World Screwworm updates, alerts, and important information from the Kendall County Agricultural Extension Office. Text SCREWWORM to 69310 AS OF THE TIME OF PUBLICATION, KENDALL COUNTY HAS NO CONFIRMED CASES OF NEW WORLD SCREWWORM.

Kendall County recently hosted a preparedness meeting with county and city officials, neighboring counties, and state agency partners to discuss coordination and response efforts should screwworm be detected in our region.

ARTIST

An American Icon

A

Becky Rogers

Appreciating the Beauty of Her Surroundings

After visiting the Texas Hill Country in the 70's, Becky knew this was where she wanted to live. She fell in love with the beauty of the Hill Country with its beautiful landscapes, majestic oak trees, flowing creeks and rivers and its beautiful wildflowers. She was in awe, especially after growing up on the Kansas plains in the middle of what used to be called the dust bowl where trees and water were scarce. Her inspiration is the land she calls home, the Texas Hill Country with its unique displays of Mother Nature. Becky is best known for her Texas Bluebonnet landscapes, prickly pear, and for her longhorn, cattle, and calf paintings. When painting, she tries to capture not only what the scene looks like but also what it feels like. Especially in a field of wildflowers, she wants the viewer to feel that they could walk right into her painting and feel the warm sun on their face and soak up the scent of the wildflowers. When painting cattle, Becky tries to capture a unique personality in each cow/calf portrait that she paints and that the viewer feels that they can reach right into the painting and pet the calf.

CONGRATULATIONS

C

KLEIN SMOKEHAUS WINS BEST BACON

Congratulations to Klein Smokehaus for winning the title of BEST BACON in the USA! Their LEGITIMATE Bacon was named Grand Champion at the 2026 American Cured Meat Championships! They also earned top honors for their ham and heavyweight bacon, as well as numerous awards at the recent Texas state contest. Last year, the Klein LEGITIMATE Bacon was named top product in HEB’s Quest for the Texas Best. According to the folks at Klein’s, “Earning nationwide attention as the champion among our colleagues in the American Association of Meat Processors is a proud feather in our cap, humbling to say the least, but what matters most are the kind words and compliments from our CUSTOMERS! Y’all love our bacon, and we’re honored to make a product you enjoy.” Each year, Klein Smokehaus generously partners with the

Kendall County Wild Game Dinner to assist with meat processing for the fundraiser. They have processed countless pounds of venison, nilgai and hog from local hunters’ donations throughout the years. “Once the animals come in, we coordinate with the cook teams to process the meat to their specifications,” adds Colton Sells, co-owner of Klein’s. “We’re proud to partner with the folks of the wild game dinner. We get to cut meat and socialize with community leaders, all while helping 4-H and FFA kids,” said Klein. “We look forward to this partnership continuing for many years.”
