A World War II veteran, entrepreneur, and longtime volunteer, Polacheck earned the nickname “The Professor” from his friend David Dweck because of his remarkable knowledge of classic cars.

Polacheck’s life has been guided by service, a never-ending curiosity, and the relationships he has built throughout his life, especially with his family.

COMMUNITY Boca Raton Pup Woobie Seeks Votes for $100,000 Purina Prize

The mother-and-son share their home with Chanel “Woobie” Faloon, a 5-pound Maltese.

The three-year-old pup is a finalist in Purina Dog Chow’s “Giving You 100” contest, which celebrates the brand’s 100th anniversary. Woobie is representing Boca Raton and Florida in the national competition.

Five finalists were selected from approximately 1,200 entries, representing Alabama, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, and Florida. Woobie was selected as the “Most Entertaining” finalist.

For the Faloons, the recognition came unexpectedly.

Chase entered Woobie in the contest after coming across the nationwide competition online. He submitted her story and photographs without expecting the pup to advance to the national finals.

“It was crazy. It was surreal. It was like, what?” Chase said of his reaction to learning Woobie had advanced.

Being named a finalist has brought additional attention to Woobie, but she was already well known around town.

Well-behaved in public, Woobie stays quiet and has become something of a local celebrity, often appearing in outfits and accessories chosen for the occasion.

“She’s got to match me,” Debbie said, describing Woobie’s collection of outfits and bejeweled accessories. The pup often dresses to coordinate with holidays and special occasions Although quiet when she is out, Woobie is more vocal at home, where she barks when someone approaches the door. Her family describes her bark as sounding remarkably like “bruh.”

Despite her small size, Woobie has plenty of energy.

When playing outside, she runs in circles as the family plays tag with her.

She also stands on her hind legs when offered treats.

“She loves everybody,” Chase said.

Woobie’s personality also comes through in her list of fears, which includes water, loud noises, boats, and airplanes. She prefers to be carried upstairs, earning what her family considers princess treatment.

An independent judging panel selected five finalists, including Woobie, based on criteria including storytelling, relevance to the contest theme, and presentation. The grand prize winner will receive $100,000 and a one-year supply of Dog Chow.

Friends and members of the Boca Raton community have rallied around Woobie, voting for her and cheering her on in the competition.

“Everybody’s like, go Chanel, go!”

Debbie said.

The family is asking the Boca Raton community to continue that support by voting for Woobie to win the contest.

Public voting is open through August 21 on the myPurina app. Public votes and judges’ scores will be combined to determine the grand prize winner.

Woobie’s official finalist page lists her as the contest’s “Most Entertaining” finalist from Boca Raton.

Singer and Moskowitz to Face off in Boca Chamber Festival Days’ November ScholarSip Event Raises Support for

Wednesday evening community members gathered at Crazy Uncle Mike’s for “ScholarSip,” a networking and fundraising event featuring live music, drinks, hors d’oeuvres, raffles, and opportunities to support scholarships and educational opportunities for local students.

ScholarSip was one of 20 events taking place throughout August as part of Boca Chamber Festival Days, an annual series organized by the Boca Regional Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Allegiance Home Health.

Wednesday’s event served as both a networking mixer and fundraiser for Scholar Career Coaching, a local nonprofit organization that supports first-generation Americans and English-language-learning students.

Scholar Career Coaching was founded

by Lynne W. Gassant in 2013 and pairs students with volunteer mentors who assist in guiding them from their junior year of high school through college or other postsecondary paths.

Graduating scholars receive scholarships to help support a four-year degree or their next chosen step.

The organization serves about 50 to 80 students per cycle and has helped thousands of students since its founding.

Jessica Costa, director of events and a board member of Scholar Career Coaching, said that the community’s involvement is incorporated into the organization’s mission. Costa became involved with the nonprofit two years ago and volunteers her time to help coordinate events and build sup-

port for its program.

“This is where we live. This is our home, right?” Costa said. “And a lot of times I feel like we don’t even know the talent or the amazing folks who are just living within a few blocks of us.”

Costa said events like ScholarSip give residents an opportunity to better understand how their contributions affect students in their own communities.

“When they come out and they can kind of put the physical together with the thought, the idea, then it’s very powerful and they can see what it is that they’re actually contributing and donating to,” she said.

In addition to raising scholarship funds, ScholarSip introduces more people to Scholar Career Coaching and helps recruit volunteer mentors.

The organization is actively seeking mentors in Boca Raton and throughout Southeast Florida. Volunteers generally commit about one to two hours per week to provide guidance, encouragement, and practical support to students who are navigating high school, college applications, and their transition to postsecondary education.

Costa said that these relationships created throughout the community through mentoring can have a lasting effect on the students and the broader community.

“It’s a proven fact that, you know, when students have caring adults in their corner, they feel way better in life,” she said.

Students supported by Scholar Career Coaching come from communities throughout Southeast Florida, not just Boca Raton, making the local participation an important part of their work.

Costa said community members who support students through donations or mentorship help create connections that continue after graduation.

“The students who they’re supporting are actually from Southeast Florida, from their communities, from their neighborhoods,” she said.

Riding a wave of momentum which saw him win yesterday’s GOP Primary former Boca Raton Mayor will be on the November ballot in Congressional District 25. Singer used a decisive performance in Miami-Dade County where he stressed his support for Israel, President Trump and cutting regulations on business that cause higher prices to bank enough votes to overcome a deficit in Broward and shaky performance in his home county.

In November, he will face Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz, who while technically an incumbent is running in a new district, one which heavily favors the Republicans. President Donald Trump remains highly popular in the coastal areas of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties where this district lies.

Breaking News: Boys & Girls Club Out in New Boca Public Park

With only two projects approved for Boca’s new public North Park, the district that owns the site just voted to discontinue negotiations with the Boys & Girls Club.

Even with the club’s Palm Beach County CEO Jaene Miranda there to answer questions, three of the five commissioners for the Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District voted Monday to end the talks. Minutes before they adjourned, “we need to talk about another location for a fieldhouse,” on that site, suggested commissioner Steve Engel. “The seed is planted,” agreed chairman Robert Rollins.

Moskowitz turned back progressive challenger Oliver Larkin easily on Tuesday to secure his party’s nomination. This result defied late expectations which had Larkin closing and polling that indicated the race was on the Democratic side was tight.

Also at issue was the use of the term ‘concessionaire,’ the undetermined size of the building, and the time it could take to raise the money and design and construct the property, as much as 10 years. Miranda took issue with the term ‘concessionaire,’ and asked for more time to explore the issue with their own legal counsel.

But that wasn’t enough to persuade commissioners. Engel’s vote came “very reluctantly and painfully” as a Boys Club kid himself. He said his main concern was “bulletproofing” an agreement so no lawsuit could emerge later. “I’m not sure this is the right place,” commissioner Erin Wright said after having second thoughts.

Boca’s Boys & Girls Club is in the city’s Sand Pine Park, and this site was approved for a larger building. The only other project that survived the district’s ranking system after hearing out proposals was a skate park, awaiting city permits to start building.

Boca Raton Historical Society Opens Nominations for the 30th Annual Walk of Recognition

Nominations are now open for the 30th Annual Walk of Recognition, a milestone celebration marking three decades of honoring the individuals whose leadership and generosity have shaped Boca Raton. The Boca Raton Historical Society and The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum invite the community to help select this year’s honorees, continuing a tradition that has honored the city’s most distinguished citizens for 30 years.

“When I started the Walk of Recognition in 1997, I saw a community full of people quietly doing extraordinary things — for their neighbors, for local schools, for people who needed help — and no one was stopping to say thank you,” said Marta Batmasian, founder of the Walk of Recognition.

The Charges Against Clerk of Courts Mike Caruso Detailed

On Tuesday, August 18, 2026, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued an executive order resulting in the immediate suspension of Michael Allen Caruso from his position as the Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller for Palm Beach County.

According to the official state document,, Caruso’s suspension directly follows his arrest earlier today on five severe felony charges involving a minor.

The Felony Charges The executive order outlines that Caruso is currently facing the following five felony counts: Kidnapping, in violation of section 775.084 of the Florida Statutes.

Lewd or lascivious molestation, in violation of section 800.04(5) of the Florida Statutes.

Lewd or lascivious exhibition, in violation of section 800.04(7) of the Florida Statutes.

Luring or enticing a child, in violation of section 787.025 of the Florida Statutes.

Child abuse (mental injury), in violation of section 827.03(2)(c) of the Florida Statutes.

Disturbing Allegations Detailed in Affidavit The arrest warrant affidavit, drafted by a Special Agent with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and attached to the executive order, provides distressing details re-

garding the case.

The victim is identified as a male child under the age of twelve.

The victim is the paternal grandson of the defendant.

The alleged abuse began in Orange County in the fall of 2024, during occasions when Caruso was alone with the child, such as a fishing trip and on Thanksgiving Day. The affidavit also details incidents that allegedly occurred during a family cruise aboard the Icon of the Seas in August 2025.

During the cruise, Caruso allegedly lured the child away from his parents under the pretext of getting ice cream, and subsequently subjected the child to sexual battery in his stateroom shower.

The document notes that the victim is currently receiving therapeutic services to cope with the trauma resulting from these events.

Repercussions and State Response Noting that “Florida is a law-andorder State,” Governor DeSantis utilized his executive authority under the Florida Constitution to immediately remove Caruso from power.

Effective immediately, the terms of the suspension dictate the following: Caruso is strictly prohibited from performing any official act, duty, or function related to his public office.

He is barred from receiving any pay, allowance, or other emoluments and privileges of the office during the suspension period.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is ordered to assist in the immediate transition of the office.

The FDLE is also tasked with ensuring that neither Caruso nor his staff remove any official files, documents, records, or computers from the Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller’s office.

That Outlasts the Crisis

You Learn to Trust God Through Prayer

By C.C. Simpson It is Monday. The quarterly numbers are bad. A key client just walked.

The team is running on fumes. And somewhere underneath the pressure to perform, to close, to prove yourself, a question surfaces that most marketplace leaders won’t say out loud: “Can I trust God when everything looks like this? Like failure?”

The apostle Paul answers that question in Romans 4. He points to Abraham and writes: “No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised” (Romans 4:2022). Sit with Abraham’s situation for a moment: One hundred years old. Body finished. His wife Sarah’s womb barren for decades. Every biological reality screamed God’s promise of descendants as numerous as the stars was a dead letter. Abraham knew the facts.

He was not delusional. But he refused to let them have the final word.

That is not wishful thinking. That is faith, trust, war against unbelief.

And it is powerful.

Faith, the kind Paul describes here, is not vague spiritual optimism. It is a reasoned, willful conviction that God can and will do what He said, because of who He is. Abraham’s faith was not primarily a feeling. It was a stubborn daily, frontline decision to trust the One who made the promise, even when the promise looked impossible. Abraham grew strong in faith by giving glory to God in the middle of the wait. Not after the breakthrough.

During it. During the “no way this works out” phase.

I watched this play out with a business owner in a men’s group I led in Florida. Third cancer diagnosis. News as bad as it gets. What he did next undid everyone in the room. He worshipped. Unrelenting, unashamed, flat-out worship. Who does that? Hang his hat on the character of God, come what may?

You have your own impossible situations at work. A shrinking margin. A stalled career. The ethical choice that costs you the deal. Perhaps the diagnosis that bleeds into Monday. These Aug 20 -Aug 27 , 2026

are real. They press on you with real weight. Culture says to grind through with self-reliance, or to reach for a platitude that does not touch the actual pain. Both miss the point.

Biblical faith does something different. It looks directly at the contrary evidence and resolves, “Nevertheless, God is able.” It holds the promise without pretending the circumstances are not hard. Keep giving God glory in the tension, and your faith does not stay flat. It grows. That is not a metaphor. It is open to you today.

The Gospel makes this concrete.

The God who promised life from death raised Jesus from the grave. If He did that, He can be trusted with your spreadsheets, your strategy, and your setbacks. The same faith counted to Abraham as righteousness is now offered to you in Christ. Not as a prize for believing perfectly (Abraham didn’t), but as a gift to everyone who trusts the One who never breaks a promise.

So, this Monday, give glory to God before the breakthrough arrives.

Name the hard circumstances honestly, then name the character of God, too. That posture is open to you right now. In the tension between what you see and what God has said, your faith can grow. Not despite the pressure of the marketplace, but right in the middle of it. Faith can grow even because of your trials. © 2026. C.C. Perhaps you only ask God for the “big stuff” and not the “small stuff.” Guess what? Everything is small to God. None of your requests are big in God’s eyes. He has every hair on your head numbered, and he knows how many fell out in the sink this morning.

You’re not bothering God when you give him your requests; he’s the one who set up the system of prayer in the first place. That’s why the New Testament tells you more than 20 times to ask for whatever you need in prayer. Matthew 7:7 says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (NIV).

Don’t Duck from Whence You Came, ‘Ducktown’ Descendants Be Proud!

The Past is Prologue

By Douglas G Logan Antonio’s phrase, in “The Tempest” (Act 2, Scene 1) was uttered to motivate a murder. Modern usage is more benign. It’s a way to link contemporary events to history. The fragment is carved into the stone of the National Archives Building in DC George Washington took command of the American Revolutionary Forces surrounding Boston in July of 1775. It became obvious to him and his Generals, that to defeat the British in the city, he needed artillery pieces. When the British took Bunker Hill, it increased the urgency.

On November 16th he ordered a colonel of his artillery corps, Henry Knox, to travel to Ft Ticonderoga “…to gather as many cannons and as much ammunitions as he could cart back with him.” He gave him 1,000 Pounds to accomplish his mission.

The story of “The Noble Train”, Knox’ seven week harrowing journey, is a romantic and heroic tale. A 300 mile expedition that resulted in the expulsion of the British, and a turn in the course of the Revolutionary War. He was able to transport 59 cannons, ultimately firing down on the city from the surrounding Dorchester Heights. An exciting tale of daunting odds and impervious determination; a pivotal episode that changed history.

On the 11th of March, 1967, I was half asleep in a hammock in our Fire Direction Center, a large tent, fortified with sandbags. I was 23, and an Officer with Charlie Battery, of the 5/27 Artillery, 101st Airborne Division, in II Corps, the Central Highlands in Vietnam. An anguished transmission quickly got me to my feet.

A Recon Calvary platoon of the 4th Division was surrounded and under attack. They were desperate; only artillery fire could break the siege. And, they were woefully out of range of our guns. There was only one solution. We would have to transport two of our howitzers and ammunition about 4 miles closer to the engagement, through “bad guy” territory.

Move artillery to change the calculus of the hostilities.

It was a set-up. It was not a matter of

if we would be ambushed, just where or when. I looked at my CO, the late John Wagner, and merely said, “I got this!”. I remember just a pat on my shoulder. I “dapped” with the Carlson twins on my way out the hootch.

I assembled the two guns, two gun trucks, an ammo truck, and my Jeep. I gave the NCO’s a quick briefing; told them I would take on the ambush when it came; they were to accelerate and get to the forward firing position; I would catch up. When I got in my Jeep, I told my driver, Ray Boehm (from Buffalo, NY), “The plan is simple; you drive; I shoot!”

The ambush came, as scripted, about 2 miles out. At the center, a nasty machine gun. The key was to take it out. Once that happened, the rest would disperse. Boehm did a 90 degree turn and drove straight towards the nest; I went through 2 clips and 3 grenades. We took it out, then went down the road to catch up to the guns.

They were almost there.

We were able to break the siege and the Cav platoon got out. The next day, their platoon leader found me to thank me. We embraced. He had a tear in his eye. I just said, “Garryowen!”. The legendary Irish limerick that was Custer’s fighting song. A month later I was awarded the Bronze Star for my actions on March 11.

Ducktown was the name of the Italian American section of Atlantic City, NJ, where Raffaele and Genoveffa Imperiale resided at 20 North Georgia Avenue, you might say imperially with their 11 children, one of them Clementine, or Lina as her brothers and sisters called her. I would one day call her “mom.”

Raffaele and Genoveffa who had immigrated from Italy in 1900 were married in nearby City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia where Raffaele established himself as a most suitable tailor specializing in garment making and clothing repair, highly valued trades for skilled Italian immigrants of that era.

Eventually they relocated their rapidly sprouting family to Ducktown, the historically Italian American neighborhood stretching from Missouri to Texas avenues in what was then the queen of resorts, Atlantic City, NJ. The Ducktown district had derived its name from Italian duck farmers who were the first Italian immigrants to move there. Along the bayfront there they built duck houses to raise poultry and waterfowl supplied to local hotels. St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church along with friendly family-run bakeries, taverns and social clubs would eventually unify and enliven the tightly knit enclave, where my mom grew up.

Ducktown was also called “Little Italy” by The Press of Atlantic City way before I started my career as a reporter there after graduating from Temple U and then earning my master’s degree at University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School. The school was named after Walter Annenberg, who owned the newspaper where I’d eventually become one of its most daring cityside reporters, The Philadelphia Inquirer, covering everything from predatory drug dealers to visiting U.S. presidents, including one I thought had been shot.

The shots were fired during a concert President Nixon was attending and I was covering at the Philadelphia Academy of Music, but the secret service agent who tackled me before I could reach the president’s box yelled the shots fired were part

of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. Oh The World’s Playground Later, Atlantic City is where my playfulness would become full bloom and famous or maybe infamous one day when it caused me to break my neck. At that time, I was a restless young lifeguard who after work one hot day made headlines when I dove headfirst from my lifeboat into the ocean onto guess what? Out of nowhere sprang a shallow sandbar onto the ocean floor that made a jolting rendezvous with my dauntlessly stubborn head, instantly turning Captain Marvelous Madden into one mad duck out of water.

Eventually I recovered although you’d hardly call it at breakneck speed as it took over a year to return to somewhat normal. After I was put back together almost like new again, what did I do? Dive again! This time headlong into another line of work replacing neck breaking with news breaking called public relations.

Soon the city where I grew up would become more widely known as The World’s Playground, where my mom played with her brothers and sisters in their close-knit Italian neighborhood while not too far away a mustachioed Irishman named William Madden deftly played his violin at the elegant Traymore Hotel on the boardwalk, was destined to become my dad.

There one day he and my mom would meet, fall in love, and soon create me!

All Thanks to Ducktow So, you might say the lifeguard, who turned reporter who would eventually make a big splash into PR when he launched TransMedia Group is thankful to all the ducks for that’s where it all began when an Italian tailor relocated his flock to a wonderland called Ducktown.

And made me one of the luckiest duck Lucky duck Tom Madden is an author and publicist whose PR firm, TransMedia Group, has made countless clients lucky ducks too over the past 40-plus years. The celebrated firm, which he founded when he left NBC in New York City, is today managed by his dauntless daughter Adrienne Mazzone.

Meet Art Polacheck: “The Professor” At 98 years old, Art “The Professor” Polacheck has long been a familiar and beloved face in the Boca Raton community.

A World War II veteran, entrepreneur, and longtime volunteer, Polacheck earned the nickname “The Professor” from his friend David Dweck because of his remarkable knowledge of classic cars.

Polacheck’s life has been guided by service, a never-ending curiosity, and the relationships he has built throughout his life, especially with his family.

Born on June 12, 1928, in the Chicago area, Polacheck developed an interest in electronics at an early age. By the time he was 15, he was operating his own amateur radio station, an experience that gave him confidence and showed him he could contribute in a meaningful way.

“I knew what I was doing.” he said.

That confidence led him to enlist in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II at age 17 rather than wait to be drafted at 18.

In 1948, Polacheck was discharged from the military. With the assistance of the GI Bill, he moved to South Florida and attended the University of Miami, enrolling in the business school and majoring in economics. That education laid the foundation for a career as an entrepreneur that would span the next 66 years.

Over the years, Polacheck pursued several business ventures, some of which aligned with his passion for automobiles. Among them was a medical supply company in Deerfield Beach that served thousands of customers. He also owned the Fort Lauderdale Antique Car Museum before retiring at 88.

His move to Miami for college also marked the beginning of another lifelong

passion. Around that time, he purchased his first collector car, a 1931 Ford Model A Roadster.

One of Polacheck’s favorite memories is driving the Model A from Chicago to Miami with another freshman headed to the University of Miami. Taking turns behind the wheel, the two completed the journey in two and a half days. With a top speed of just 50 mph, the trip became an early adventure that helped spark Polacheck’s lifelong love of the open road.

Although his appreciation for automobiles began with an interest in mechanics after his military service, it soon evolved into a lifelong hobby. Over the decades, Polacheck studied, collected, restored, showed, and drove historic automobiles, eventually owning hundreds of cars.

“The Professor,” a nickname coined by his longtime friend David Dweck, reflects Polacheck’s extraordinary knowledge of automotive history. Even at 98 years old, he can recall details many people would never know, including who designed a particular model, the engine it used, how it changed from one model year to the next, and its place in automotive history. Just as importantly, he enjoys sharing that knowledge with others.

Polacheck became a familiar presence at the Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance, where he participated for many years, displaying a different vehicle from his collection nearly every time. His entries earned awards and recognition, but what he remembers most is the people.

For Polacheck, the concours preserved history not only by showcasing historic automobiles, but also by bringing together generations of enthusiasts to share stories, experiences, and knowledge.

“It’s really a people show.” Polacheck said. “The cars are secondary.”

That sense of connection reflects his longtime belief that cars have a unique ability to bring people together.

He participated in the Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance for approximately 17 consecutive years at The Boca Raton, entering a different vehicle every year and helping shape the event’s reputation as one of South Florida’s premier collector car shows.

Polacheck credits Rick Case as the driving force behind the concours, which also welcomed celebrity guests over the years, including Jay Leno.

Polacheck finds volunteering deeply rewarding, saying that every day he left, he felt he had done something productive and meaningful.

“Every day I left there felt so good that I’d do something so productive… there was just no words to describe it,” Polacheck said.

A member of the Rotary Club of Boca Raton for nearly two decades, Polacheck admires the organization’s commitment to identifying community needs and taking action through service. Its mission reflects his own lifelong belief in using his own abilities to help improve the lives of others.

Aside from his volunteer work, military service, expertise in automobiles, and business accomplishments, Polacheck considers raising his children and maintaining close family relationships to be his greatest achievements.

“My family came first,” Polacheck stated.

He shares many cherished memories of his late wife, Glorianne, describing their relationship as “love at first sight.”

The couple shared a passion for automobiles. Glorianne had a special connection to cars as the daughter of a car dealer, and she embraced Polacheck’s lifelong enthusiasm for classic automobiles.

One of Polacheck’s favorite memories is an extended trip he and the “love of his life” took together in a classic car to Massachusetts.

Today, Polacheck’s children live across the country and abroad, with one in Los Angeles, one in New Orleans, one in Denver, and another in Perth, Australia.

Despite the distance, he remains close to each of them. Every child calls approximately every 10 days, something that continues to make him proud.

Polacheck’s parenting philosophy has always centered on encouragement and perseverance. Rather than allowing his children to give up, he encouraged them to keep striving for success. He believes helping them become successful, educated, and responsible is his greatest accomplishment.

Seventy veterans participated in the flight, and Polacheck was the only World War II veteran on board. The remaining participants had served during the Korean and Vietnam wars.

“It makes you glad to be an American when you see all the wonderful tributes that are there in the Washington Monument area,” he said about the day-long trip.

Throughout the day, Polacheck said he was treated like a hero. When the flight returned home, between 30 and 50 people waited at the airport to welcome the veterans back. Seeing so many members of the community give up part of their evening to cheer for the veterans was especially meaningful to him.

On June 13, the day after Polacheck’s 98th birthday, Dweck organized a classic car show at Edgewater at Boca Pointe, the senior living community where Polacheck resides.

The event featured a variety of classic and collector vehicles, including Corvettes, Thunderbirds, Jaguars, Mercedes-Benz models, and other makes.

One of Polacheck’s favorite parts of the event was how the cars drove through the community in a parade, allowing residents who could not come outside to enjoy the vehicles from their windows. He said it was a thoughtful gesture that embodied the spirit of the hobby.

The celebration honored Polacheck while also benefiting Boca Helping Hands, where he volunteered for 17 years preparing food for people in need. He volunteered about two days a week until mobility issues made it difficult to continue.

For Polacheck, volunteering has always been another way to serve others and improve the lives of those around him. He believes helping others is valuable because the work itself matters, not the recognition that comes with it. He also hopes more people understand the importance of organizations like Boca Helping Hands and the ongoing need to address food insecurity and other basic needs within the www.bocaratontribune.com

CHARITY Melting Pot Holds Fundraiser for Breast Cancer in Conjunction with Boca Chamber Festival Days

Did you know that according to the American Cancer Society, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer?

I spoke with Jan Dymtrow, the Coordinator for Community Outreach and Support Services at the Lynn Cancer Institute in Boca Raton. She explained that they have been partnering with the Boca Chamber Festival Days and the Melting Pot for the past 15 years to raise money for the League of Ribbons. This is grassroot fundraising to provide services to patients undergoing cancer treatment.

“We provide multi-modality treatment for our cancer patients, in which a diagnosed patient meets with a Surgeon, Medical Oncologist, Radiation Oncologist, Nurse, Social Worker, Bridge to Care liaison and Dietitian all at the same appointment – with each taking their own medical intake,” she said. So, a patient at the Lynn Cancer Institute has their team and their proposed treatment plan immediately. We are with our patients every step of the way.

“The League of Ribbons is the fundraising arm of the “Support Services and Community Outreach Department” of the Lynn Cancer Institute. We hold fundraisers and sell merchandise to raise money to provide programs and services to our patients. Our providers include three massage therapists (two in Boca and one in Delray) who provide hand and foot massages while a patient receives chemotherapy; Yoga; Meditation, Relaxation and Reiki; Onco Acupuncture; and licensed Art and Music Therapists. This is the LCI way to treat the whole person as they go through their cancer treatment journey.”

The Women’s Center Mobile Mammo Van was onsite at the event to provide screening mammograms to the women in our community during the day of the fundraiser on August 18. A tour and information about the Van

were provided by the Van driver and technician – it was very interesting to see the modern equipment and the 3D technology. According to Kristina DeSouza, mammo tech, there are two vans that go out into the community – they are nicknamed, “Vanessa” and “Savannah”. The Van driver offered a bit of practical advice – to avoid caffeine when coming in for an exam as well as avoiding lotions and powders. The mammograms provided on the Van are the same technology as are provided at the Women’s Center and images go directly to a radiologist for reading.

The Mammo Van has been coming to the Melting Pot event for the past two years to provide mammograms to women who are both insured as well as those who are under / or non – insured. The Pink Ball fund was founded by Michelle Stallone, at the Women’s Center to help uninsured women who need a mammogram. Their mission is to provide lifesaving screenings for early detection of breast cancer. More information can be found on www.bocapinkball.com.

Sarah Pearson, a representative from the Boca Chamber was on hand also to give a comment. “I believe in the League of Ribbons and helping people going through chemo,” she said. “The services that the Mammovans provide are incredible and save lives. The partnership between the League of Ribbons, the Melting Pot and Allegiance Home Health Care is incredible.”

I also spoke with Emily from Allegiance Home Health Care who said, “Allegiance sponsors Boca Chamber Festival Days and facilitates fundraising for nonprofits and for profits. The Melting Pot gives 50% back of its proceeds to League of Ribbons which is an incredible amount.”

It was an amazing fundraising night overall and an inspiring event!

America 250: The 14th Colony Exhibit at The Schmidt Boca Raton His-

tory Museum A new exhibit at The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum explores Florida’s history before statehood, including its time as a loyal British colony during the American Revolution. Rare Revolutionary War artifacts from local collectors are on display alongside panels and images detailing the era. The exhibit is open through August 27, Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.a brief discussion of a featured artwork.

Zumba at the Beach at South Beach Park Pavilion Join Zumba at the Beach on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with instructor Nicole Gasparri. The session combines upbeat music and energetic dance moves with the calming sound of ocean waves for a fun and invigorating workout. The event is open to all skill levels and offers a scenic way to stay active.

Intro to Archery at Daggerwing Nature Center Daggerwing Nature Center will host Introduction to Archery on Saturday, August 22, at 9:30 a.m. for adults and children ages eight and older at $10 per participant, with reservations required.

USA Archery-certified staff will teach

participants about archery safety, skills, and proper bow-and-arrow use before practice on the range. Equipment is provided, though bows may be difficult for smaller children to pull.

Boca Raton Garden Club’s 2026 Boca Raton Lights Up For the Holidays Ornament Available Now, Tribute to Sugar Sand Park Carousel

The 2026 Boca Raton Garden Club commemorative ornament is now available for purchase and this year’s selection of a city landmark is the beloved carousel in Sugar Sand Park where generations of families have made memories.

For 32 years, the Boca Raton Garden Club has produced commemorative ornaments paying tribute to the city of Boca Raton’s history and iconic landmarks with the 2026 ornament dedicated to the Sugar Sand Park Carousel.

Johanna Sheehy, chair of the Boca Raton Garden Club’s Ornaments Project, said that the choice to honor the carousel quickly stood out as the right choice for this year.

“I have always been delighted by the fact that Boca Raton has its own carousel,” Sheehy said. “It is such a unique and special feature of our city.”

The carousel was dedicated in 2005, made possible by the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District, community support, and a $40,000 contribution from the four Rotary Clubs of Boca Raton.

The history of the Sugar Sand Park

Carousel is also a story of persistence.

Elaine Kleinman, a former Beach and Park commissioner, advocated for a carousel for years, earning her the nickname ‘carousel lady’ for those efforts. Local students joined Kleinman’s campaign too. In 1988 and again in 1998, students in Ann Langford’s classes at Addison Mizner Elementary School wrote letters urging the Park District to add a carousel to the park.

Once the new attraction finished, the carousel was more than just a ride. It is inspired by 19th-century carousels, features 30 horses and two chariots, with each animal detailed by hand. No two horses are alike, creating a unique, colorful work of art that continues to bring generations of families together.

This year’s Garden Club ornament captures nostalgia in a 2 ¾-inch solid brass design produced by BeaconDesign, making it the perfect gift. Proceeds from the ornament sales will support the Garden Club’s educational and environmental programs, as well as scholarships.

For Sheehy, this ornament is about memories.

“Our Sugar Sand Park carousel has brought such joy to thousands of children and the adults who love them,” she said. “Seeing this colorful ornament will remind them of an ancient or recent thrill; of a special moment in time.”

The 2026 ornament is $28 and is available through the Boca Raton Garden Club. Checks payable to the Boca Raton Garden Club may be mailed to 4281 NW 3rd Ave., Boca Raton, FL 33432. The Garden Club also has opportunities to purchase the ornament at public events.
