COMMUNITY Boca’s Got Talent For a Good Cause

By Marci Shatzman The third time was the charm for rapper and producer Kevin Nova, who won the 10th Boca’s Got Talent, part of the Chamber’s 49th Festival Days through August.

“This is not easy what we do. We put it out there,” Nova said from the stage to a packed house at Crazy Uncle Mike’s Tuesday night. If fact, this annual Festival Days’ fundraiser was the fourth for venue owners Camilla and Mike Goodwin. They formed “Myla’s Beleaf” after their young daughter died in 2020 “to support other families navigating the emotional, physical and financial challenges of childhood cancer.” Camilla introduced this event by showing and telling Myla’s story on a screen to remind the crowd why they were there. Then 13 acts, including duos and backup singers, from an 8-yearold to a Louie Armstrong sound-alike, sang to compete for the three top priz-

es. Second place went to Heather Durand, 21, in green sparkles, and third to Zachary Kopelman, who even wore a fedora to deliver Frank Sinatra’s “That’s Life.” Now 6’2” and 17 in September, Kopelman has been part of the performing arts community especially in Boca since childhood. Judges this year were Boca Regional Chamber CEO/ president Troy McLellan; Rotarian and OPAL Awards co-chair Jan Savarick; and musician, vocalist and songwriter Jeff London. Chamber ambassador and 2025 Small Business Leader of the Year Laureen Pannullo shared emcee duties with WPTV NBC 5’s Zitali Solache, who even brought her baby daughter. Co-sponsors were Pannullo’s Confident Bookkeeping Services and John McClaskie’s Leading Edge Mortgage Corp. Festival Days pair nonprofits with Chamber member profits to highlight the nonprofit community.

Who wouldn’t want to see how the other half live? So, the Chamber’s Golden Bell Education Foundation’s Festival Days fundraiser happy hour was a big draw at the exclusive The Boca Raton Beach Club.

“I know we’re oversold,” Golden Bell chairman Chuck Stout said as he and hundreds of people checked into the Atlantic Ballroom and checked out the ocean view too Friday night.

It wasn’t just the venue, it was also the cause. “Golden Bell was started 33 years ago by the Chamber to support our public schools, and since then has given out a couple million dollars,” Chamber CEO/president Troy McLellan told the crowd.

But the big announcements and news came at the end of the evening.

Marta and Jim Batmasian gave Golden Bell $10,000 through their family foundation. And an anonymous donor do-

nated even more, closing the gap between the money Golden Bell had for grant requests and what they needed to fulfill all of them, Stout said. Then the Sunrise Foundation, now part of Rotary’s Downtown Club, gathered onstage for a check presentation from the last Teacher of the Year and golf outing, Susan Weinblatt, the March event’s co-chair announced. The check was for $27,196. The next Teacher of the Year is April 8, 2027 at The Studio at Mizner Park, she noted.

Also at the mic, Laurra Gilbertson, chair-elect, called the co-event’s Young Professional Network of Chamber members under 40 “the next generation of business leaders.”

Gentle jokes about the Golden Bell event’s pirate theme that only John and Bella McClaskie in costume followed.

“Everybody has something to say,” Bella told us.

Many citizens came out to voice their concern that the location is near residential areas, and they want to preserve the green space. Commissioners debated the merits of restricting the land’s use and implementing a restrictive covenant on the property. However, FPL currently utilizes the property. The commission passed a motion to revisit the issue in September, allowing for further research and public input.

Boynton Beach residents rolled out their yoga mats Saturday morning for a fun and inspiring morning of movement, wellness and community at “Pilates with the Mayor,” hosted by Mayor Rebecca Shelton.

I attended the event on August 8 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Arts and Cultural Center, located at 125 E. Ocean Avenue in Boynton Beach. What stood out most was the strong community turnout.

Residents of different ages and fitness levels came together to participate, socialize and enjoy a morning focused on health and well-being.

The event featured a 45-minute Pilates session led by Mayor Shelton. The mayor made the class welcoming and accessible, including for those who were new to Pilates. Participants were encouraged to work at their own pace, creating an atmosphere that felt less like a traditional workout and more like a community gathering centered on wellness.

The morning offered much more than exercise. Before and after the Pilates session, attendees could enjoy refreshments and participate in a variety of wellness activities. like stretching, while vendors provided additional opportunities for residents to learn about health and lifestyle options.

Among the vendors was lululemon, while 3 Natives offered fresh fruit bowls.

There were also free giveaways and a raffle, adding to the festive atmosphere and giving participants even more reasons to stay, mingle and enjoy the morning.

City Commissioner Aimee Kelley was also in attendance, along with numerous Boynton Beach residents.

The event reflected Mayor Shelton’s belief that community leadership can include encouraging residents to make their health a priority.

According to the Mayor’s Office: “Pilates with the Mayor was inspired by the belief that leadership is about setting an example. We launched this event to encourage residents to invest in their health, step outside their comfort zones, and experience the benefits of movement in a supportive environment. Wellness is about more than physical fitness. It builds confidence, reduces stress, and strengthens our community.

By bringing people together for an event like this, we’re creating opportunities for healthier lifestyles while reminding everyone that their city is invested in their well-being.”

That message appeared to resonate with the people who attended. The turnout demonstrated that residents are interested in opportunities that combine fitness, wellness and social connection.

For many people, finding the motivation to exercise can be difficult, especially when fitness activities feel intimidating or overly competitive. An event like Pilates with the Mayor creates a different experience. Residents can try something new, meet their neighbors and take part in an activity in a relaxed and supportive environment.

It also shows how wellness can become a community experience rather than something people must pursue on their own.

The event is part of a broader effort to provide Boynton Beach residents with activities that encourage healthy lifestyles and strengthen connections within the community. The Mayor’s Office plans to host more events like this in the future, giving residents additional opportunities to get active, learn about wellness and connect with one another.

If Saturday morning was any indication, there is plenty of interest.

The enthusiastic turnout and positive atmosphere made it clear that Boynton Beach residents are ready for more opportunities to come together. Whether residents are longtime Pilates enthusiasts or simply curious about trying something new, events like this provide an inviting way to get moving and be part of the community.

As Boynton Beach continues to create programs centered on residents’ quality of life, wellness events such as Pilates with the Mayor could become a meaningful part of the city’s community calendar.

For residents, the message is simple: watch for upcoming wellness events, bring your mat, invite a neighbor and be ready to try something new.

A healthy community starts with people coming together—and Saturday morning in Boynton Beach was a great example of that.

More Than a Head Count

6 Ways to Be Merciful

Walk into almost any company, and you will hear people described in the language of math. Head count.

Full-time equivalents. Resources.

Seats to fill. We talk about the bodies we need, the “bench” we are building, and the boxes on the organizational chart. Somewhere in all that accounting, the person disappears. He becomes a line item; a number that climbs when business is good, gets cut when it isn’t.

It happens slowly. You do not decide to stop seeing people. You get busy, the deadlines stack up, and the man who refills the coffee or the woman who runs payroll becomes part of the furniture. You walk past them a hundred times and never once say their name.

The apostle Paul refused to live that way. At the conclusion of his letter to the Romans, in a chapter 16 passage you have probably skimmed, Paul does something strange. He starts naming people. Phoebe. Priscilla and Aquila.

Epenetus. Mary. He keeps going until he has greeted 30 people by name, and he hangs little notes on them. This one worked hard. That one risked her neck for him. These two were in Christ before he was.

Thirty names. In a letter that would outlast the Roman Empire.

Why would the Holy Spirit move a man to spend that much ink on a list of names? Because being known matters to God. He built us with a hunger to be seen and known and to count for something to somebody. He understands that hunger because He’s the one who put it in us. He keeps no anonymous people. The God who numbers the hairs on your head knows you by name.

I watched the power of this up close. At our Africa Convention in Zimbabwe in 2024, a brother from South Africa and I worked our way around a room full of young professionals, calling several by name and speaking God’s truth over them. One by one, their eyes filled. They were not weeping under conviction. They wept because somebody saw them and said their name out loud. known.

The person two cubicles down is not occupying a seat. He is a man with a name, and he grew up hearing it from the people who loved him most.

The woman at the front desk did not stop mattering the day she clocked in for you. She is still somebody’s daughter. She is still worth knowing, even in a world that keeps trying to shrink her down to a profile, a badge, and a social media handle.

So, here’s your assignment for the week. Learn names. Use them. A salesman drops your name to soften you up and close the deal. But that is not our move. Use a name the way a brother does, because you actually see the person standing in front of you. Greet the cleaning crew. Thank the assistant out loud, by name, in front of the room.

Ask the new hire where she is from – and then remember her answer.

It costs you nothing, but it preaches louder than most of the words you will ever say about your faith. People know the difference between being managed and being known. When you treat the lowest-paid person in the building like he carries the image of God, you have shown the room exactly what your Savior is like. You do not need a platform to do ministry at work this week. You need a name. Say it. © 2026. C.C. The Bible reveals seven facets of mercy, and if you will learn how to be an agent of mercy, it will transform your relationships.

Mercy means being patient with people’s quirks.

The Bible says in James 3:17, “The wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy” (NLT). The wiser you become, the more patient and merciful you become.

Mercy means helping anyone around you who is hurting.

You cannot love your neighbor as yourself without being merciful. Proverbs 3:27 says, “Whenever you possibly can, do good to those who need it” (GNT).

Mercy means giving people a second chance.

When somebody hurts you, it’s natural to want to get even or write that person off. But the Bible says, “Stop being bitter and angry and mad at others . . . Instead, be kind and merciful, and forgive others, just as God forgave you because of Christ” (Ephesians 4:31-32 CEV).

Mercy means doing good to those who hurt you.

Mercy is giving people what they need, not what they deserve. Why should you do that? Because that’s what God does with you: “Love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expect-

ing to get anything back . . . Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:3536 NIV).

Mercy means being kind to those who offend you.

You need to be more interested in winning people to Christ than in winning an argument. The Living Bible paraphrase says it like this: “As for others, help them to find the Lord by being kind to them. . . . Hate every trace of their sin while being merciful to them as sinners” (Jude 1:23).

Mercy means building bridges of love to the unpopular.

This is what I call premeditated mercy, because you intentionally build friendships with people who don’t have friends or aren’t accepted at work or in society.

When the Pharisees questioned why Jesus ate with tax collectors and other unpopular people, Jesus said, “‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners” (Matthew 9:13 NLT).

Talk It Over Where in society do you see people more interested in winning arguments than in winning people to Christ? Is there a time in your own life when you have done that?

If mercy means valuing relationships over rules, what do you need to change about the way you interact with your coworkers or neighbors? What about with your family members?

This week, how can you intentionally show mercy to people around you who are hurting?

In Alaska We Must Wait for The King to Get Better

Oscar Wilde Just because I’m old, don’t presume I’m wise. But don’t presume I’m not and ignore me. This country has elevated youth worship and a corresponding death denial to the status of religion. Negotiating and navigating a dignified and fulfilling flight path to life’s “finish line” requires bucking strong head-winds. The culture does not make it easy.

I love book reviews. I frequently get stimulated by the ideas and comments contained in an artfully crafted critique. Such was the case last Sunday when I read a review of “Aging Out”, a new (and first) book by Lucy Schiller. The reviewer was author Michelle Orange.

She discusses the obstacles to joyful aging in an “…individualist, image-obsessed, consumerist society ruled by perpetual capital growth”.

She expresses the shock to the aging cohort of the 1.2 million American deaths in the COVID pandemic, where the outcome was truly Darwinian. The cataclysm forced us to reckon with how we live, age and die, given that more than 75% of Covid 19 victims were over the age of 65.

Should aging be classified as a disease? Should we doing clinical research on its mechanisms and how they may be slowed? Or, are those questions irrelevant given that “… most of the world treats aging and the elderly as a pox of the highest order”?

You find some unusual pot holes on the highway to morbidity. Geriatric Medical care is accompanied by a “dumbing down” of the doctor/pa-

tient discussion. There is an assumption you are in early stages of dementia. Or that you can’t handle the truth.

Just when you need more detail, more data, more specificity, they start feeding you Pablum. I find myself accessing diagnostic tests, doing my own research, getting my own answers.

The culture neuters the aging.

Masculinity and femininity, those delicious tensions of sexuality are recognized far less. You are just old. You are told to take the twinkle out of your eye, for fear of being automatically labeled a “dirty old man”. I intend to take my masculinity intact to the grave. Expect me to flirt with the last female hospice worker I see.

Few want to talk about death; I talk about it all the time. Eliminating death as a mystique and placing it in regular discussion seems normal for something that is inevitable. I hope I have taught my children how to live; I feel compelled to show them how to die.

This ain’t happening soon. My Jeep, ‘Sarge’, has many more adventures in his queue. I saw a wonderful little reel on Instagram that included the following meme: “I’d rather be the oldest man on the trail rather than the youngest man in the nursing home”.

I’m am on a deliberate journey.

I still have duties and obligations to fulfill. Love to give. Wisdom to pass on. Questions that need answers.

Laughter to share. Stories to tell.

Risks to take.

Every day trying to be a better man than I was yesterday. Dignified; respectful; graceful; grateful.

So, ignore me at your own peril.

Sure, if you want to cool off from impressive heat, one of the coolest places on this stewing planet is Alaska. But if you’re looking to go fishing for freshwater salmon there, you’re going to have to wait in some areas for certain species such as Yukon River Chinook (king) salmon to regenerate. Right now, there’s a ban in place until the species of salmon recovers and becomes deliciously plentiful again.

Currently, I was reading in The Alaskan Shepherd, a publication of the Catholic Bishop of Northern Alaska, about temporary restrictions on fishing for the king of salmon there extending until the supply of his highness’s succulent species is royally replenished. This might take some time and is not going to be easy in a state so dependent on fresh salmon as both a lively food and livelihood for many, alas resulting from this temporary fresh salmon scarcity.

Chinook salmon is called the “king of salmon” because it is the largest species of Pacific salmon, often growing over 30 pounds and reaching record weights above 120 pounds. Its massive size combined with rich, oily flesh and incredible fighting strength when hooked have earned Chinook its royal title.

For Alaskan natives, losing access to any salmon can be devastating. Some families there today are forced to buy more expensive imported groceries, two or three times what they cost in urban areas due to the added cost of freight.

Fishing commercially for salmon also provides many Native Alaskan families with a much-needed additional source of income. That too has gone temporarily down the drain in some

areas, which is too bad as Individuals could sell extra salmon they caught to processing plants along the Yukon, netting extra seasonal income. Now that has swum away from them, at least for the time being.

For many years in Alaska there was plenty of fish and lots of work to go around, but today canneries are closed and some families have had to choose between buying food or medicine or heating oil and other things they need to live.

ange cones. A poll worker walked me through every single step of the voting process. I was even allowed to take my sample ballot into the voting machine.

ENTERTAINMENT SALGO Brings ‘A Night at the Roxbury’ to Life at Delray Beach Music Video Release Party

On Saturday, August 8th, South Florida recording artist SALGO transformed the rooftop of Aloft Delray Beach into a 1990s-inspired nightclub for the release celebration of his latest music video, “BRO NOD.” Dubbed “A Night at the NodsBury,” the event drew hundreds of guests and paid homage to the iconic Roxbury Guys from Saturday Night Live and the 1998 comedy A Night at the Roxbury.

The evening featured throwback fashion, ’90s music, themed cocktails, custom merchandise and an appearance by the fictional Nodsbury Guys created for SALGO’s music video.

At the center of the event was the concept behind “BRO NOD,” which turns the familiar head nod exchanged between men into a comedic musical theme. In SALGO’s version, the traditional Roxbury head bob becomes the “Bro Nod,” with the Nodsbury Guys serving as the song’s signature characters.

The Nodsbury Guys made a surprise entrance before the video premiere, appearing on a high ledge overlooking the crowd as Haddaway’s “What Is Love” played. The pair performed their signature head nods before guests watched “BRO NOD” on the big screen.

The celebration also introduced the Bro-Cademy Awards, a tonguein-cheek awards ceremony recogniz-

ing performers, actors and members of the creative team behind the music video. Guests participated throughout the evening with “Bro Nods” and “Chin Ups.” The ’90s theme extended throughout the rooftop, with disco balls, retro clubwear, LED cups, themed drinks, custom stickers and merchandise, and a large backdrop featuring the Nodsbury Guys. Two guests were also recognized for their costumes and commitment to the theme, receiving the titles of “Duke of the Roxbury” and “Duchess of the Roxbury.”

Rather than treating the occasion as a traditional music video premiere, SALGO designed the event as an extension of the “BRO NOD” concept, combining a video screening with live entertainment, comedy, an awards presentation and a themed nightclub experience.

FLORIDA ANIMALS: ALLIGATORS at Daggerwing Nature Center Daggerwing Nature Center will host a family-friendly Florida Animals program Saturday at 12 p.m. The event will explore the lives of alligators, Florida’s state reptile, with a naturalist-led presentation and an opportunity for participants to see an alligator up close. The program is open to all ages and requires reservations.

Intro to SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding) at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center Gumbo Limbo Nature Center will host an Intro to SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding) program Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Participants will learn basic paddleboarding skills while explor-

ing the Intracoastal and discovering the mangrove and estuary ecosystem. The beginner-friendly program includes instruction, equipment, and life jackets, which are required to be worn.

Boca Farmers Market The Boca Farmers Market is held every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Boca Raton Innovation Campus, featuring more than 90 vendors from across South Florida. Shoppers can find local produce, pasture-raised meats, baked goods, organic coffee, specialty foods, skincare products, and other offerings from local farms and small businesses.

The family-friendly event includes free on-site parking.

Wildflower in Bloom Series at Wildflower Park Saturday Morning Pilates Free, beginner-friendly Pilates classes are held Saturdays at 9 a.m. at Wildflower Park through August 29. Florida Atlantic University officially ushered in a new chapter for its athletic department on Friday afternoon, introducing Vice President and Director of Athletics Josh McCowan during a press conference and reception at the Owls Nest in the Schmidt Family Complex for Academic and Athletic Excellence.

A capacity crowd of student-athletes, university staff, coaches, donors, sponsors, and community leaders gathered to hear from McCowan, who was appointed to the position on July 31 following a comprehensive national search.

“From first conversations, it was clear the alignment and vision of President Hasner and the committee, and the passion and energy they had behind how to collectively make Florida Atlantic successful—not just within Athletics, but the University as a whole,” McCowan said during his opening remarks. “I could not be more excited to be a part of the team President Hasner put together and the alignment he is creating.”
