UpLift Olympics Supports Children’s Literacy During Boca Chamber Festival Days Community members gathered Monday evening at Eddie V’s Prime Seafood for the UpLift Olympics, a Boca Chamber Festival Days fundraiser benefiting Roots and Wings, a nonprofit dedicated to improving childhood literacy across Palm Beach County.Olympics Held in partnership with Eddie V’s, the event combined friendly competition, cornhole, hors d’oeuvres, wine, beer, and fundraising to support Project UpLift, the nonprofit’s after-school reading program serving students in Title I elementary schools. Guests who opted to sponsor a child in the program for one year were entered into a raffle to win two JetBlue tickets to any destination in the United States.

COMMUNITY Festival Days’ Kickoff Another Excuse for a Party

By Marci Shatzman Always a sellout as Spirit of Giving hosted a happy hour to kick off the 49th annual Boca Chamber Festival Days through August.

Hugs at the door of American Social Tuesday for longtime supporters of Boca nonprofits, business execs and football, from ESPN Events’ Boca Bowl college teams matchup to FAU’s upcoming football season.

After Spirit exec Lindy Harvey’s welcome, VIP intros and shoutouts, “Friends and fun raisers” is what Chamber CEO/president Troy McLellan called Festival Day social events.

They’re intended to raise the profile of Boca’s non-profits paired with Chamber member venues and businesses. See the link below for this year’s upcoming events and tickets.

Boca Boys & Girls Club Slows Public Park Deal

Final negotiations to build a bigger Boca Raton Boys & Girls Club in Boca’s new public park have hit a snag.City & Local Guides “Frankly we have some legal concerns.

We highly support an agreement, but there are a lot of operational issues,” legal counsel Sam Goren told the Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District at Monday’s night’s meeting. “We have yet to reach an agreement.”

Their current building in the city’s Sand Pine Park was preliminarily approved to more than triple their space in a new building in the district-owned North Park property in Boca Teeca. At issue is a term sheet laying out all the joint issues.

“Once a term sheet is agreed upon, the parties typically spend approximately six to eight months working through the detailed operational, legal, design, and facility-specific requirements before executing the fi-

nal agreement,” according to a district report to commissioners.

“They said it would be months away,” executive director Briann Harms told commissioners about their two-step process to examine and respond to the district’s proposal. The time lag irritated commissioners.

“Maybe we should shake hands and be friends and go our separate ways,” said Steve Engel, the first to respond. “We need to put a limit on this.”

“Go back to them. I’m not comfortable with this,” Erin Wright agreed.

“Did you give them a due date?” Susan Vogelgesang asked Harms. “We did put a timeline on this,” Harms responded.Regional Parks & Gardens “I’d say two weeks and our next meeting,” Engel said.

“It would be nice to know the issues they’re struggling with,” added Craig Ehrnst. Chairman Bob Rollins agreed to “give them two weeks.”

Three speakers at the public comment meeting opener said 500 to 1,600 Boca Teeca condo residents object to the club’s location in that residential community and have signed resolutions against that intention and a planned skate park. The district approved the skate park in January that’s pending city permits to start building.

Melvin Cohen Melvin “Mickey” Cohen passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, July 30, 2026 in Boca Raton, Florida. He was 84 years of age. Melvin was born in Milford, Massachusetts to his parents Samuel and Dora Cohen (Popkin). He is predeceased by his parents, and one son, Stanley Cohen.

Boca Autism School Fundraiser First Chamber Festival Days

Boca School for Autism turned the Genesis Club in FAU’s Flagler stadium into a comedy club Saturday night as the first round of Boca Chamber Festival Days in August.Autism Spectrum Disorders The private school for students from 5 to 22 on the autism spectrum or “related differences” is on FAU’s Boca campus, and FAU president and first lady Jillian and Adam Hasner dropped by.

“What we’ve accomplished on a daily basis is life-changing,” said On Target Digital Marketing president Michael Piccoli, the new board chair and the event co-sponsor with Flagler Credit Union and others. Boca Chamber Festival Days: The Season of Giving Kicks Off

And they’re off: Boca Festival Days has officially begun! Sponsored by the Boca Raton Chamber, the event serves as a warm-up for the upcoming season, arriving right in the middle of the summer lull — when everyone is off on vacation and our seasonal residents haven’t returned yet. It’s a beautiful initiative, one that was created forty-nine years ago.

This week, Dini and I attended the Spirit of Giving event in person on Tuesday, and we’ll be at the YMCA event this Thursday. Our newspaper will be covering every event throughout the month — follow along online. I encourage everyone to attend, since this is a business partnership with nonprofit organizations: local businesses organize events to raise funds for them. It’s a really wonderful initiative.

A Bit of History Boca Chamber Festival Days was born in 1977, and 2026 marks its 49th edition — nearly five uninterrupted decades connecting the local business community to nonprofit causes across the region. The formula has stayed the same since day one: Chamber member businesses “adopt” an event in partnership with a nonprofit organization, and the proceeds — from tickets, donations, and auctions — go directly to the cause.

Knowing who you are is a lifelong journey of self-reflection, core values, and understanding your behavior. It is assessing the context of the space you inhabit, and how you fit into it. It also requires you to do some reverse analysis; knowing who you are not.Soccer Gianni Infantino has succumbed to some serious temptations. Hubris, grandiosity, greed and a thirst for power. His story has roots in mythology and classic parables. Like Icarus, he has flown too close to the sun.

He has a deaf ear to his place in the pantheon of sports leaders and executives. He presides over a confederation of confederations of federations. Direct lines of authority are blurred. What appears to be an advantage,absence of accountability, is actually a disadvantage, ultimately.

His power is fragile. It has the capacity to disappear overnight, as it seems to have in the last fortnight. Stitching together a global coalition of oligarchs is fraught with potential jeopardy. Henry Kissinger once joked with me that the problem with the Infantinos of this world was they all presume that they are Heads of State.

And, Gianni is not. He thought that by ingratiating himself with Trump, he could be like Trump, and pull off the same scams. Probably thought the least loyal world leader would have his back, naive to the truth the man never has anyone’s back. Thought because he produced an event that greedily generated billions, he could act like a billionaire, create his own kleptocracy. Has just learned who he is not.

This is not the first “overreach” rodeo for soccer. Two years ago we witnessed the “Superleague” debacle. Rich professional clubs attempted to create a competitive vehicle that was anti-egalitarian. It collapsed, dramatically. Infantino was right in the middle of that trainwreck. You would think he learned from it; he apparently did not.

The sport has forcefully rebuked the selfish impulses of its de facto leader.

That is refreshing and hopeful. Where this goes from here, I don’t know. But, Infantino has learned who he is not. He is not a Head of State; not an autocrat; not an oligarch; not a horse without a corral.

Let’s see if he absorbs that reality.

Finding Joy in a Sometimes Mundane Marketplace

6 Ways to Get Unstuck in Grief

An article in Harvard Business Review reported that, according to research, to realize a truly satisfying life, three things are needed: achievement, meaningfulness, and joy. This study found, however, that while all three are important, the most elusive is joy. How can we better understand and experience more joy?Swap Meets & Outdoor Markets Life outside of work. The first insight in the article, “How the Busiest People Find Joy,” was this: How people spend their extra time outside of work is more important than how much time they spend at work. Research has shown people who experience more joy from free time tend to find more value in their work. Teachings from the Bible support this reality. For instance, Proverbs 17:22 tells us, “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”

Regularly engaging with others.

A second key, according to this article, is that people get more joy from doing activities with others than from doing them alone. The researchers discovered that professionals experienced more joy when activities were done with others.

This observation should not be a surprise to students of the Bible. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 teaches, “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!” Does this resonate with you? Whom might you spend more time with after work today or sometime this week?

Choosing productive pursuits. Research determined it is important to avoid passive pursuits to experience higher levels of joy. After a long day at work, many people watch TV, engage with social media, or spend time with video games. These passive pursuits take up time, but do not produce joy.

On a three-point scale, joy soars to 2.4 when involved in active pursuits, but passive activities produce joy only at a 1.7 level. Exercising, hobbies, and volunteering are all active pursuits that bring more joy than passively watching TV or social media. As Romans 14:17 asserts, “For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but

A fourth important factor in maximizing joy is to follow our passions. The research discovered activities that align with what we find personally rewarding enhance life satisfaction. When engaging in hobbies or passions that make your heart soar, joy will be maximized.

We find strong testimony for this from King David in the Bible’s Old Testament. He wrote, “Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy, and I will praise you with the lyre, O God, my God” (Psalm 43:4).

David’s heart soared when playing worship music to God. What makes your heart soar?

Diversity in what we do. A final factor in maximizing joy is to diversify your activities. Finding areas of passion is important, but research also reveals that there is a risk in having one singular focus. When we invest in only one passion that can create a diminishing return over time. Having only one passion eventually becomes less enjoyable, so diversifying activities can be more fruitful.

Here is a biblical principle that support this: “Divide your portion to seven, or even to eight, for you do not know what misfortune may occur on the earth” (Ecclesiastes 11:2).

Reflection/Discussion Questions Do you find joy in your work? Or is your job a “necessary evil” that you tolerate so you can maintain your desired lifestyle and enable you to pursue activities you really enjoy? Explain your answer.

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted, and he saves those whose spirits have been crushed.” Psalm 34:18 (NCV) Everyone will experience loss. And you don’t just “get over” a loss. If you’re scared to express emotion and refuse to go through it, that’s where you get stuck.

You get unstuck by letting God help you. Here are six ways he does that: God draws you close to himself.

Psalm 34:18 says, “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted, and he saves those whose spirits have been crushed” (NCV).

When you grieve, God may seem a million miles away. But what you feel and what is real are not always the same thing. In fact, God has never been any closer to you than when you are grieving.

God grieves with you.

The Bible says Jesus was “a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief” (Isaiah 53:3 NLT). When you come to Jesus with your grief, he is sympathetic and understands your pain. He’s not aloof or apathetic.

God gives you a church family for support.

We’re meant to grieve and heal in community through our church family.

We’re better together!

“Be devoted to one another in love . . . Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn” (Romans 12:10, 15 NIV).

God uses grief to help you grow.

He does this in three ways. First, God

uses pain to get your attention. The Bible says, “My friends, consider yourselves fortunate when all kinds of trials come your way, for you know that when your faith succeeds in facing such trials, the result is the ability to endure” (James 1:2-3 GNT).

Second, he brings good out of bad (Romans 8:28), and third, he prepares you for eternity (2 Corinthians 4:17-18).

God gives you the hope of heaven.

Much of Palm Beach County is contained within the newly redrawn Congressional District 23 which is entirely within the county. Campaigns & Elections The battle to win this heavily-Democratic district has emerged as a microcosm of the national debate within the Democratic Party. Six-term incumbent Lois Frankel is being challenged from the left by retired intellectual property attorney and Lake Worth Beach activist Victoria Doyle. A third candidate Mark Piper is running but has not gained much traction.

The primary pits Frankel’s decades of institutional knowledge and legislative pragmatism against Doyle’s call for grassroots urgency, structural campaign reform, and a new generation of confrontational leadership.

The Candidates 1. Lois Frankel (Incumbent) Background: A fixture in South Florida politics for nearly 40 years, Frankel served seven terms in the Florida House of Representatives (becoming the state’s first female House Minority Leader), two terms as Mayor of West Palm Beach, and has represented coastal Palm Beach County in Congress since 2013. Following a mid-decade redistricting push in early 2026, Florida’s 25th Congressional District has suddenly transformed into one of the most closely watched congressional battlegrounds in the country. Redrawn under a map initiated by Governor Ron DeSantis’ office during a special legislative session, the updated boundaries reshaped a traditionally Democratic seat into prime pickup territory for Republicans. The seat should in normal circumstances be an easy Republican pickup but the combination of a Democratic incumbent, Jared Moskowitz who has been twice appointed to office by Governor DeSantis and the drawbacks of one or more of the potential GOP nominees. Government Spanning across three South Florida counties—stretching from Delray Beach in Palm Beach County, down through Broward, and reaching Miami Beach in Miami-Dade County—the new CD-25 encompasses territory that Donald Trump carried by approximately 9 points in 2024. Following the redraw, major election handicappers, including Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball, which is the industry standard for judging the political landscape shifted the district rating from “Safe Democratic” to a crucial “Toss-up,” setting off a frantic, crowded Republican primary ahead of the August 18, 2026 election. Quite frankly under optimum circumstances this would be a “Likely/Safe Republican” district as it resembles a seat E. Clay Shaw held for decades as a Republican in a more Democratic-era in this region.

Key Endorsements: Received a major endorsement from Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, providing significant statewide backing.

Strategy: Singer is positioning himself as a proven administrator with a track record of lowering municipal taxes, supporting law enforcement, and fostering business growth in Palm Beach County.

But Singer’s drawbacks are wellknown to Boca Raton residents. His obstinate and arrogant handling of the Downtown Redevelopment project held spurn opposition which overwhelmed the city in this past March’s Municipal election. His handling of the Memorial Park history angered Many veterans.

The sense here is that local Republicans in Boca Raton would rather see someone else win the nomination and not have to deal with potential leakage in the General Election.

2. Dan Franzese Background: Conservative businessman and political candidate.

Finances: Highly competitive war chest, holding over $1.1 million in cash on hand as of the mid-summer FEC filings.

Men of Vision and Purpose of UpLift Olympics Supports Children’s Literacy During Boca Chamber Boynton Beach: Doing Great Things in the Community Festival Days

Community members gathered Monday evening at Eddie V’s Prime Seafood for the UpLift Olympics, a Boca Chamber Festival Days fundraiser benefiting Roots and Wings, a nonprofit dedicated to improving childhood literacy across Palm Beach County.Olympics Held in partnership with Eddie V’s, the event combined friendly competition, cornhole, hors d’oeuvres, wine, beer, and fundraising to support Project UpLift, the nonprofit’s after-school reading program serving students in Title I elementary schools. Guests who opted to sponsor a child in the program for one year were entered into a raffle to win two JetBlue tickets to any destination in the United States.

The UpLift Olympics is one of 20 events taking place throughout August as part of Boca Chamber Festival Days, an annual series organized by the Boca Regional Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Allegiance Home Health.

The monthlong event series pairs local nonprofits with area businesses to raise funds and awareness for organizations serving Boca Raton and its neighboring communities.

Founded in 2016, Roots and Wings was created by Ted Hoskinson to honor the vision he shared with his late wife, Anne Hoskinson. The nonprofit’s name reflects Anne Hoskinson’s belief that every child needs strong roots before they can spread their wings.

“What we do is really a hand up, not a handout,” Hoskinson said.

Since its founding, Roots and Wings has expanded from serving one school and 30 students to working in 24 Title I schools throughout Palm Beach County, reaching approximately 1,600 students in grades one through five. Through Project UpLift, certiAug 6 -Aug 13, 2026

fied teachers provide 54 hours of after-school reading instruction in small groups at students’ home schools, allowing children to learn in a familiar and safe environment with educators they already know and trust.Child Care Sherry Zepatos, community relations and business development representative for Roots and Wings, and Hoskinson said that students view the program as a reading club rather than remedial instruction, creating an environment where children feel welcome and are excited to improve their reading skills.

“Up until third grade, you learn to read. From third grade on, you read to learn,” Zepatos said, emphasizing that literacy is the foundation for success across every academic subject.

Project Uplift tracks student progress through assessments administered three times during the school year. Participating students in the program have achieved a 93 percent success rate in improving reading skills and meeting growth goals.

Monday ’s event was Oly mpic-themed as the program celebrates student achievement through a rewards system that includes medals, certificates, and bicycles donated by community sponsors like Boca West Children’s Foundation. Teachers are also recognized through Roots the nonprofit’s Above and Beyond Awards, which honor outstanding educators and school staff nominated by their peers.

“For the first time, they are in a place that’s unbelievable… it’s the Super Bowl for them,” Hoskinson said.

Many students in Project UpLift attend Title I schools and have had few opportunities to be recognized for academic achievement. Program leaders said the celebrations and awards help build students’ confidence, motivation, and sense of accomplishment.Education Partnerships like the one with the Boca Regional Chamber for Boca Chamber Festival Days help bring together businesses, nonprofits, and residents to invest in the future of local children. Community support for literacy programs like Project UpLift helps provide struggling readers with additional instruction, encouragement, and opportunities to succeed inside and outside the classroom.

Dennis Rumph, the founder of Men of Vision and Purpose (MVP) of Boynton Beach has been with the group since its inception a few years ago. He and other black men in the Boynton Beach area, many who are retired and ex-athletes like himself, like to give back to younger students in the community.

“It all started out when a few friends went to meet for meals at the Golden Corral and the idea for the organization grew from there,” he said.

Since many of the men in the group are ex-athletes, they decided to partner with the principal of Poinciana Elementary in Boynton and teach basketball. “We want to change the narrative for young black children in the community.”

What started out with teaching basketball, grew into more program initiatives for the group. They have a mentoring program and two Reading Buddies programs now. They partnered with Melanie Acosta, a professor at FAU to help teach the Reading Buddies program.

The mission of MVP is dedicated to empowering youth to reach their full potential through educational support, mentorship, leadership development and life-training skills. Now all their programs that they are putting in place are becoming successful!

Their name and reach in the community are growing. Just two years ago, they sponsored a basketball game in the community and bought basketballs for the children and 1100 people showed up for the game. They recently had a Reading Buddies event at the

Boynton Beach City Hall where they did assessments and the City Manager and Mayor Rebecca Shelton attended.

They sponsor gospel concerts at local churches to raise money for the group and have received donations from the City of Boynton Beach and others to sponsor their programs.

As part of the Teen Buddies program, high school students read to second graders and the children love it.

They form a bond with the buddies, like a Big Brother/Big Sister program and everyone is excited to participate.

They also have programs at the Carolyn Sims Center in Boynton Beach.

Next Saturday, the group is holding a program at a local church to donate lightly used school uniforms for the upcoming school year.Basketball A special event is being held for a few lucky students at Bounce Delray sports bar on August 10th. It is a kick-off football event for the University of Miami football team, and a few children are invited to receive free book bags and meet the players of the University of Miami football team and Coach Michael Rumph. It is exciting for all those involved.

The MVP are to be commended and recognized for their outstanding contributions in the area and for local children.

“You can see the difference we are making in the children,” said Dennis Rumph. “They are happy and changed.”

The event is open to all skill levels and offers a scenic way to stay active.

Fishing Fun at Daggerwing Nature Center Fishing Fun will take place at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Daggerwing Nature Center. The program, open to adults and children ages eight and older, teaches freshwater fishing basics, including casting techniques and fish identification, with all equipment provided. The cost is $10 per participant, reservations are required, and attendees should bring a water bottle, sun protection, and closed-toe shoes that can get wet or muddy.

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center Creativity by the Coast Workshop Series Creativity by the Coast will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center.

The hands-on workshop for adults and teens explores the connection between art and science through nature-inspired activities, with minors required to attend with an adult. The session will feature watercolor explorations.

SPORTS Why Replacing Infantino With one of His Critics Won’t Save Football

The current frenzy surrounding the desire to trigger the resignation of FIFA President Gianni Infantino is building toward a fever pitch thanks in large part to the media in Europe. There is a palpable excitement that his departure will usher in a new era of reform led by a virtuous successor. Infantino rightly is being called to task for his effort to privatize and sell-off part of the ownership of FIFA’s most lucrative assets. He deserves all the scrutiny he currently faces. Soccer However, a closer look at the figures fueling this fire—specifically Victor Montagliani of CONCACAF and the leadership within UEFA—suggests that the “reformers” waiting in the wings may simply be different sides of the same coin.

The CONCACAF Context: Montagliani’s Record Victor Montagliani, often viewed as a potential successor to Infantino, carries a track record that warrants scrutiny.

During his tenure as President of Cana-

da Soccer, the federation struggled with bureaucracy and eventually faced financial instability. Furthermore, under his leadership, CONCACAF has moved toward a model that many argue disenfranchises smaller nations: • Marketing Ties: Re-entering a longterm partnership with Soccer United Marketing (the arm of MLS) has deepened the Americanization of the region’s commercial strategy.

• Top-Heavy Competitions: The shift from the Champions League to the Champions Cup has made it increasingly difficult for clubs from the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) and Central America to compete. While this may generate more revenue, it effectively excludes “the little guy”.

• Closed-League Preference: Montagliani’s support for high-level closed leagues, particularly in his nation, Canada, reflects a lack of commitment to traditional structures like promotion and relegation. He was quite frankly more

difficult and dug-in with his opposition to the CAS filing regarding Promotion and Relegation I was part of while working with Miami FC than Infantino and FIFA were. Sports News UEFA’s “Virtuous” Facade UEFA often positions itself as the defender of football’s soul against “creeping Americanization,” yet its business dealings tell a different story. UEFA established a private entity to manage media rights for the Champions League and the Euros, choosing Relevant Sport—an American company — as its exclusive partner.

This partnership is particularly telling given who runs Relevant Sport: Stephen Ross, owner of the Miami Dolphins. Ross is a major American land developer and political donor who has faced criticism for trying to relocate domestic European league games—such as a La Liga match between Girona and Barcelona—to Miami. Despite UEFA’s public stance, they have “crawled into

bed” with the very commercial interests they claim to oppose. Ross of course has had interests here in South Florida and donates regularly to political campaigns including that of our Mayor Andy Thomson (who is a Democrat).

The Political Narrative vs. Reality Much has been made of the political ties surrounding FIFA’s potential shift, specifically the narrative of a “Trump takeover of football” involving figures like Joshua Kushner. However, this ignores the reality of existing ties. While Joshua Kushner has a history of donating to Democratic causes, including President Obama and more recently the 2024 campaigns, it is actually the critics of Infantino—like La Liga’s Javier Tebas and UEFA—who are already doing business with major Trump-supporting developers like Stephen Ross.
