Only 44% of Florida’s Children Start Kindergarten Ready INDEPENDENT SENIOR LIVING

As thousands of Florida children prepare to enter kindergarten this fall, recently released Florida Department of Education data reveal that only 44% of students entering public schools last year met the state’s kindergarten readiness benchmark.

At Fuller Center, the results tell a very different story.

For the second consecutive year, 100% of Fuller Center’s Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) graduates met Florida’s kindergarten readiness benchmark, demonstrating what is possible when children have access to high-quality early education during their most important developmental years.

The numbers illustrate both the value of quality early education, and the challenge Florida still faces in preparing children for kindergarten. While 72% of children completing VPK met the state’s readiness benchmark at the end of the program, only 44% of all children entering public-school kindergarten met that same benchmark at the start of the 2025/26 school year. Fuller Center’s VPK graduates achieved a 100% readiness rate. The Unparalleled Power of Perseverance

The Only Way to Get Rid of Guilt

Perseverance. We could cite many ingredients that contribute to success, for individuals as well as businesses and organizations, but one common contributing factor is perseverance. Whether for acquiring skills for a specific job, building a career, developing a product or service, or receiving recognition that results in promotions and pay increases, perseverance is invaluable.Journalism & News Industry We might cite other traits like patience and endurance, but perseverance is different. Sometimes in life, we need to cultivate patience, willingness to bide our time, and wait until the desired opportunity or outcome arrives. At other times – whether a crisis at work, in the home, or in one’s personal life – endurance is the best we can muster. Hanging on until the very end, fearing what might happen if we decided to let go.

However, perseverance is a more active response to circumstances. Writing within a spiritual context, beloved devotional writer Oswald Chambers observed, “A saint’s life is in the hands of God like a bow and arrow in the hands of an archer. God is aiming at something the saint cannot see, but our Lord continues to stretch and strain, and every once in a while the saint says, ‘I can’t take any more.’ Yet God pays no attention; He goes on stretching until His purpose is in sight, and then He lets the arrow fly. Entrust yourself to God’s hands.”

Can you relate to this description?

Have you ever been stretched to what seemed to be the breaking point, not certain you could survive? Times like that are when perseverance is most critical, especially for those of us who desire to effectively integrate our faith into what we do in the marketplace. We do not know what God is doing with us or where He is pointing us, but we press on, trusting in His plan.

As this Monday Manna is published, my wife and I are celebrating 52 years of marriage. We are proud of this milestone, one that relatively few couples achieve. just survive, but to thrive despite challenges of all kinds. In the Bible, we find many teachings about the value of perseverance. Here are some examples:Educational Resources Recognize the products of perseverance. During times of adversity, all we can see are the present problems. However, God is using our circumstances as part of His process for molding and shaping us into the people He wants us to become. “…we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character hope” (Romans 5:3-4).

Understand perseverance develops us. We all would like to achieve maturity and experience instantly, without any effort. However, many of life’s best lessons are learned as we persevere when encountering trials and difficulties. “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:2-4).

Maintain focus on the goal. The path to accomplishments is rarely a straight line. It involves many twists and turns, persevering because we confidently keep our objectives and goals in sight. “Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. All of us, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the LORD has caused the wrongdoing of us all to fall on Him.” Isaiah 53:5-6 (NASB) Every one of us has a good reason to feel guilt. No one does everything right!

We hurt other people. We act selfishly. Often the unkindest things we say and do are to the people we love the most.

Just like you can’t hide your sins from God, you can’t hide your guilt from him either. Not only that, but when you try to cover up your guilty feelings, they start to eat at you on the inside.

Only one thing works to get rid of guilt: Confess your sins, and trust in God’s forgiveness. The word “confession” in the Bible in Greek is homologeo, which means “to say the same thing.” So confession simply means to agree with God: “You’re right, God. I was wrong.”

Everything you’re going to do wrong—including the stuff you’re going to do tomorrow, next week, and 10 years from now—has already been paid for.

That is the goodness of God. Jesus takes all your guilt on himself.

He gives you his goodness—his righteousness. This is the most basic, fundamental truth of the Bible: Your broken soul becomes whole again in him.

The Bible says in Isaiah 53:5-6, “But He was pierced for our offenses, He was crushed for our wrongdoings. . . . All of us, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the LORD has caused the wrongdoing of us all to fall on Him” (NASB).

If you don’t feel forgiven, it means

you don’t fully understand God’s goodness. When Jesus died, he covered all your sins. It’s as if he threw them into the deepest part of the sea and put up a “No Fishing” sign.

Confess your sin to God. And because he forgives and forgets your sin, you’ll have no need to drag it out again.

Talk It Over What are some common but unhealthy ways people try to handle guilt?

Is there guilt you need to let go of today? What is holding you back from making that choice to confess your sin and accept God’s forgiveness?

Why is joy a natural result of understanding God’s grace?

The answer to your guilt is not to hide it; it’s to confess what you’ve done.

The Bible says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9 CSB). And it also says that you cannot earn your way into heaven: “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV).

If you’re ready to confess your sins and to trust Jesus with your life, start with this prayer: “Dear God, I know I’m a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is your Son. I believe that he died for my sin and that you raised him to life.

Jesus, I want to trust you as my Savior and follow you as Lord from this day forward.

I accept your free gift of salvation. Guide my life, and help me to do your will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

What is a “Thought Daughter”? Gen Z’s New Intellectual Cosplay

Remember when you were single and had roommates in your 20s? I do.

I’m still in touch with my two retired still gorgeous United Airlines “stewardesses.” That’s what they were called then, and they had to be major lookers.

We shared a one-bedroom in a downtown Chicago hi-rise. Guess who was rarely there? I’m sure they loved having a reporter who was always home and could vouch for them with their mothers. If this sounds like a sitcom, it was. I should have taken copious notes and written a screenplay.

Fast-forward and the whole premise of “The Golden Girls” sitcom that aired on NBC from September 1985 to May 1992 was four mature, formerly married women living together in Miami, despite their personality differences. The series’ finale, in which Dorothy gets married and Blanche sells the house, was watched by more than 27 million people. The sitcom is

still on TV, although the four starring actresses are long gone. Betty White, who played Rose Nylund, was the last on Dec. 31, 2021, just days before her 100th birthday on Jan. 17.

Now home prices are bringing back midlife roommates as a lifestyle. The reasons are obvious. Housing and living costs. Even the New York Times has noticed the rebirth of house-sharing. “Older Adults Turn to Golden Girls Housing” was the headline in the Times’ June 27 story on communal living. TV Comedies Media at the time cited the 1985 median home price in the United States as about $84,00. Today it’s $424,900, according to Census.gov.

By Claudia Catherine It was a Tuesday afternoon, and there I was, sitting at a dive bar in the West Village, waiting for a friend who was, naturally, running late. Like any modern human abandoned to their own devices in a bar, I pulled out my phone and made the fatal mistake of opening TikTok—an app I’d been avoiding with the same discipline I use to avoid the Midtown Tunnel on a holiday weekend.

Demographics The first video that pops up is a girl with the look of someone who just discovered the Enlightenment, teaching her audience how to be a “thought daughter.” A what, my people? I had to look it up. I discovered that the “thought daughter” is the new obsession of Gen Z. It started as a response to one of those horrific, misogynistic internet polls where people were asked if they’d rather have a “gay son or a thot daughter.”

Now, allow me a quick pedagogical digression—after all, after three decades buried in textbooks, translations, and chalkboards, you learn that teaching English today includes serving as a sworn translator for the delusions of the internet. For those who aren’t familiar with the gutter of urban American slang, T.H.O.T. is an acronym for “That Hoe Over There.” It’s a cheap, low, and cruel insult. But the English language, fickle as it is, loves a phonetic prank. As it happens, the acronym thot sounds exactly like the word thought. And that’s where the girls of Gen Z, in a rare and brilliant stroke of linguistic jiu-jitsu, decided to trip up the machismo of the joke. They hijacked the sound of the insult, changed the spelling, and resigned the concept. The thot daughter was euthanized to make room for the thought daughter. What was once a slur became an intellectual shield and a lifestyle aesthetic.

The original idea was beautiful: “You try to insult us and diminish us, but we’ll respond by reading Dostoevsky and discussing philosophy.” The problem, as I was saying, isn’t the origin of the joke, but the packaging it got afterward…

What ou see there isn’t an organic movement of curiosity about the world, but purely an “aesthetic.” It’s the socalled Dark Academia *, which makes

suburban teenagers think it’s genius to wear a tweed blazer in 90-degree heat on a sidewalk in Brooklyn just to look mysterious.Subcultures & Niche Interests The rabbit hole goes deeper: the internet is now living in the era of “maxxing.” If you aren’t fluent in this dialect of incel and obscure forums, “maximizing” has become the command.

You have looksmaxxing (getting obsessed with optimizing your own appearance), sleepmaxxing (optimizing your sleep as if it were an Excel spreadsheet), and now, this attempt at “smartmaxxing.” These girls are doing a real mental CrossFit. They want to be cultured, but they want it by next week, or by Labor Day at the absolute latest.

The girl makes a list of a hundred literary classics, sets quotas for how many pages she has to devour a day, and runs to Wikipedia to memorize summaries of German philosophy. Why? To understand the anxieties of the human soul? No. To look super-interesting in a thirty-second video or to drop a Nietzsche quote in line at a cafe in the Upper West Side. It has a formula, a script, a checklist for genius. But there’s one detail this generation forgot: interesting people are, above all, interested people.

I know a handful of people with academic pedigrees that go on for miles, who have read the entire Library of Congress, and who, at a bar table, are more boring than a C-SPAN broadcast. Desperately wanting to be interesting is the fastest shortcut to becoming an insufferable bore (even if it’s a gourmet bore).

A genuinely interesting person isn’t performing for an imaginary audience.

They read about the Russian Revolution, the reproduction of fungi, or the history of the Brooklyn Bridge simply because it gives them pleasure. They listen to others. They have a weird hobby because they like it, not because it “fits their digital persona.” For that person, culture isn’t social currency; it’s what makes their heart beat faster.People & Society Scan the QR Code to read the full article.

Major Turnpike Expansion and Yamato Road Widening Enters Design Phase

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, a division of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), is moving forward with a major infrastructure initiative to widen a critical segment of Florida’s Turnpike Mainline (SR 91).

To share details and gather community feedback, state officials hosted a two-part public hearing this week, featuring a virtual session on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, and an in-person meeting on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at the Dr. André Fladell Civic Center in Del-

ray Beach.

The project, designated as FPID: 417132-1, is currently in its design phase—the stage where engineers finalize construction plans, structural specifications, and cost estimates before breaking ground.

Project Scope: Turnpike & Yamato Road Upgrades The primary footprint of the project spans a 3.4-mile stretch of the Turnpike, running from north of Glades Road (Milepost 76.8) to north of the L-38 Canal (Milepost 80.2).

In a joint effort to tackle local traffic congestion, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise has partnered with Palm Beach County Engineering and Public Works to simultaneously upgrade a heavily traveled section of Yamato Road.

Key Project Goals & Infrastructure Improvements Turnpike Lane Expansion: Increase the mainline capacity from six to eight general-use lanes, while add-

ing one dedicated auxiliary lane in each direction to improve merging and traffic flow.

Interchange Reconfiguration: Realign the southbound off-ramp to the existing Glades Road interchange to enhance safety and reduce bottlenecking.

Yamato Road Widening: Expand Yamato Road from four to six lanes from west of Lakeridge Boulevard to just west of Florida’s Turnpike, alongside major drainage improvements.

Bridge Replacements: Overhaul aging infrastructure by completely replacing the Yamato Road bridges, the Clint Moore Road bridge, and the bridge over the L-38 Canal.

Noise Mitigation: Construct protective noise walls in qualifying residential areas to shield nearby neighborhoods from increased traffic decibels.

More than 300 runners gathered Thursday evening at South County Regional Park for the Adolph and Rose Levis JCC’s (Levis JCC) 16th annual Run, Sweat and Beers 5K.Judaism The event raises money to support Levis JCC programming, including summer camps, fitness classes and arts and culture activities.

Levis JCC President and CEO Marty Haberer said the race is about more than fundraising. It also helps build community and introduce new people to the organization.

“These are truly communitywide,” Haberer said. “There’s Jewish people.

There’s not Jewish people. The whole community comes out.”

Haberer also said that the event serves as a way to get as many people involved at the center as possible.

“Money should never be the thing that causes participation. We’re a mission-driven organization, and we want everybody to be involved… with [what] we do at the JCC,” Haberer said.

Associate Vice President of Financial Resource Development, Donor Services and Special Events Elaine Riba said the race has become a summer tradition in the community during the slower summer months.

“It’s really festive,” Riba said. “Afterwards it’s really like a party feel, and people enjoy hanging out.” Running & Walking After crossing the finish line, runners enjoyed beer, refreshments and light food from more than 10 vendors, including Rita’s Italian Ice, Nothing Bundt Cakes and Raw Juce.

“Handing out these [juice] shots after brings the whole community together of being healthy, running and just the healthy lifestyle,” Dimitrelos said.

“My favorite part is the fellowship and being around some of the same people that I saw last year,” Schneider said.

“And of course, always trying to one-up where I was the year before.”

As visitors gathered around an outdoor aquarium Monday afternoon at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, volunteer Judy Joffe explained why mangroves are known as the “nursery of the sea.”

Children watched as native fish swam through the water as staff dropped food into the exhibit. Zoos, Aquariums & Preserves Gumbo Limbo’s interactive programs allow children and adults to see marine life up close as part of its broader mission to educate visitors about marine life and inspire conservation.

“The mission of Gumbo Limbo is to inspire stewardship of coastal and marine ecosystems,” Gumbo Limbo Manager Leanne Welch said. “Our hope is to inspire stewardship and conservation through education.”

The center offers free daily educational programs, including the Outdoor Marine Aquarium Feeding and the Resident Sea Turtle Talk.

“Our visitors can expect a short, informative program around 10 to 15 minutes where they learn about local ecosystems, native animals, the threats they face and what they can do to help conserve,” Welch said.

At the aquarium feeding, Joffe introduced visitors to the mangrove ecosystem and explained its role in protecting marine life. She said that the trees provide shelter for young fish while helping stabilize South Florida’s coastline.

Each aquarium represents a different local habitat and is home to exclusively Florida native marine animals. Because Gumbo Limbo is so close to the ocean, it pumps water directly from the Atlantic Ocean into its aquariums instead of creating artificial seawater.Regional Parks & Gardens “We pull the water with pumps across the street at Red Reef Park under A1A. It goes through all of our tanks, and then it’s discharged directly behind us into the Intracoastal Waterway,” Welch said.

dent green sea turtles Morgan and Lady McNubbins at the outdoor tank. The two cannot survive in the wild because of injuries and now help teach visitors about marine conservation.

Staff lowered lettuce and green peppers into the tank as part of the turtles’ afternoon enrichment, which is referred to as the turtles “salad bar.”

Joffe explained how the two turtles show the threats sea turtles face in the wild.

“These turtles have been with us for more than 100 million years in the same form, so we need to protect them,” Joffe said. “I cannot imagine being taken down by a plastic straw or a plastic bag.”

Joffe encouraged guests to be mindful of everyday actions that affect marine life. She mentioned proper disposal of garbage, eating sustainably caught food and watching fishing lines.

“We just need to treasure our sea turtles and our ocean life,” Joffe said. Educational Resources Gumbo Limbo welcomes more than 250,000 visitors each year and has approximately 150 volunteers who help support the educational programs.

“Most of our employees started as volunteers themselves,” Welch said.

High school volunteer Maia Cornejo said helping visitors learn about marine life is the most rewarding part of volunteering.

“The whole message that we’re trying to give here is for you to come out of Gumbo Limbo with a little more information about what you saw and something you can do on your own part to try to protect these animals,” Cornejo said.

Looking ahead, the center plans to open its new exhibit Florida’s Wild Backyard later this year. The exhibit will feature native reptiles, plants and aquatic species.

“All our programs align with our mission, so each program includes a type of environmental education component and we hope our guests walk away feeling inspired to action,” Welch said.

A mosquito bite, a bee sting, or a tick found after a hike may seem like an inevitable part of enjoying nature. However, some bites and stings can lead to serious health concerns, including severe allergic reactions and diseases. West Nile is one of the most common mosquito-borne diseases in the continental United States, and Lyme disease is one of many illnesses caused by a pathogen

The challenge is that it’s often difficult to tell the difference between a harmless insect and one carrying disease, and many tickborne diseases share signs and symptoms. That’s why prevention and awareness are so important.

Nearly one in 10 Americans experiences a tick bite each year, yet nearly twothirds of adults report that they rarely or never check themselves for ticks after spending time outdoors.

Spot the Signs Most insect bites cause mild reactions such as itching, redness, warmth or minor swelling, and these symptoms can typically be managed with basic first aid. Washing the affected area, applying an ice pack, and using over-the-counter anti-itch creams or antihistamines may help relieve discomfort.

However, certain symptoms should never be ignored. Difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the lips or throat, nausea, vomiting, cramping or

severe headaches may indicate a serious allergic reaction and require immediate medical attention. Importantly, half of all fatal reactions to insect stings occur in people with no previous history of severe allergies, underscoring the importance of recognizing warning signs quickly.

Any tick bites that lead to fever and chills, aches and pains, fatigue, or rashes should be addressed by a healthcare provider. Based on your symptoms, examination, the geographic region where you were bitten, and lab results, a medical professional can develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Before the Bite Prevention remains the best defense against bug-related illnesses. Wearing long sleeves and pants when possible, using EPA-registered insect repellents and taking precautions around your home can significantly reduce exposure. For ticks, a thorough body and scalp check after spending time outdoors is essential,

particularly because ticks can live in any grassy, brushy or wooded area.

Mosquito prevention matters just as much. Repairing damaged window and door screens and eliminating standing water around your home—including bird baths, flowerpots and unused containers—can help reduce mosquito populations and lower the risk of mosquito-borne diseases.

For the stinging variety of insects such as honeybees, yellow jackets, and white-faced paper wasps, a few precautions can help avoid painful stingers and anaphylactic reactions. These insects are attracted to bright colors, strongly-scented perfumes, and accessible food and drinks, so being mindful of clothing and covering your picnic basket can keep bees away.

Knowing how to reduce insect bites, identify symptoms, and understand when to self-care vs. seek medical attention can create an enjoyable, pest-free summer.

Events & Listings Hosted by Lip Sync Battle Alumni and MPCAA Board Chair Peg Anderson and Presented by The Studio at Mizner Park to an expected sold-out crowd, the event will entertain and delight all in attendance while raising awareness and funds to provide arts education to the greater Boca Raton community. In addition to helping choose the winner, attendees will receive a great view of the battle, opportunities to bid on fantastic silent auction items, and a complimentary drink ticket to kick off their night. Tickets are $75 for VIP with preferred seating and $50 for General Admission with open seating, with all ticket holders receiving one drink ticket and are available

Lip Sync Battle’s performers to date include contestants Cindee Conner, Michael DiPerna, Christopher Ferreira, Ingrid Fulmer, Veronica Gomero, Dyana Kenney, Noor Kheiri, Janne Lomanky, Dan Nathanson, Micheal Nathanson, and Matt Savarick. Lip Sync Battle Winners are chosen by a combination of donations made in their name, votes by attendees and judge’s scores. Judges will be former Lip Sync Battle winner, Chasity Navarro of Chasity Navarro Event Productions; Mizner Park Cultural Arts Association Board member Sharon Kelley; and Media Sponsor Doug Heizer of The Boca Raton Tribune. Emcees for the evening include Beth Stibal from Sunny 107.9 and Trish McKibbin of Fire & Ice Productions.

Funds raised will support arts education programs, including a new series of Theatre for Young Audiences performances; family-oriented programming for our local community.
