COMMUNITY Boca’s Summer Fundraiser That Worked

By Kartik Krishnaiyer Talk about a successful weekday happy hour for a cause. Inner Circle and Boca Regional Chamber partnered up again recently to support the Golden Bell Education Foundation at Crazy Uncle Mike’s.

“We raised around $2,000 at the Inner Circle event – however the fundraising was secondary. We were more focused and excited about the exposure the Golden Bell Foundation would receive at the event. And as you know – we had a TREMENDOUS amount of exposure. The restaurant was PACKED!!!” the Chamber’s executive V.P. Sarah Pearson said afterwards. Chamber CEO/president Troy McClellan waded through the crowd to agree. “We appreciate the partnership and the packed house.” The event was free, so to raise money for Golden Bell guests could bid on a table full of raffle prizes. And the Chamber’s Golden Bell manager Man-

dy Forrester rang a bell whenever major donations and bids rolled in.

Longtime Golden Bell chairman Chuck Stout and Chamber ambassadors hung out at a Golden Bell information table up front. Even county Vice Mayor Marci Woodward dropped in.

Tuckers live.

Boca Mayor Andy Thomson and Palm Beach County Vice Mayor Marci Woodward were among them, and some even brought the kids. Everyone was decked out in red, white and blue to celebrate the country’s 250th birthday to coincide with the installations.

Outgoing president Allen Konis conducted club business, handing out Rotary Service Above Self and other awards to “recognize exceptional members.” “It was a thrill and an honor and so much fun to be president,” he said, before turning the mic and the president’s seal over to Tucker. The group ended the program part of the evening by singing “God Bless America” together.

Anger Is Not Your Friend

What to Remember When Your Faith Is Challenged

By Robert J. Tamasy Have you noticed how angry people seem to be these days? Protesters yelling at each other on public streets and sidewalks. News commentators on TV and radio shouting to get their points across, often rudely interrupting guests who disagree with them.

Social media spewing antagonism to people, individuals, and groups that offer different perspectives and beliefs. Heated exchanges between coworkers that disrupt the workday.

Why are so many people angry?

There are many possible explanations, some reasonable, and some that are not. But the bottom line is this: What do expressions of anger and uncontrolled emotional outbursts accomplish? In most cases, not much. Usually, they only serve to make people angrier, because negative emotions rarely resolve the issues.

In fact, sometimes people do not even know what they are mad about.

A verse from the Bible’s New Testament offers a good description: “The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there” (Acts 19:32).

This can happen anywhere, including the home and the workplace.

It has happened more than once that after a lengthy dispute, the participants started wondering, “Now, what is it that we are arguing about?”

Knowing this is a common problem, the Scriptures have much to say about the destructive power and influences of anger. Here are several examples: A no-win emotion. Rarely does anything positive result from the expression of negative emotions. Nothing is gained in a contest to determine who can scream the loudest or display the greatest degree of fury and animosity. Better to contain troublesome emotions than to deal with the aftermath later. “Refrain from anger and abandon wrath; do not fret – it can only bring harm” (Psalm 37:8).

An impulsive action. When people do something that makes us feel angry within, a typical response is to vent that anger and let them know Jul 2 -Jul 9 , 2026

exactly how we feel. This may make us feel better, but the end result often is resentment, damaged relationships, and problems that remain unresolved.

How we react demonstrates the difference between wisdom and foolishness. “A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult” (Proverbs 12:16). “A wise man fears the Lord and shuns evil, but a fool is hotheaded and reckless” (Proverbs 16:16).

A viable option. The excuse, “I cannot help it,” when engaging in an angry outburst, is not acceptable. We are to control our emotions – good or bad – rather than allow them to control us. “My beloved brothers, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness of God” ( James 1:19-20).

A dangerous position. Failing to resolve a disagreement and permitting angry emotions to simmer can only escalate the conflict. It is better to work toward resolution, to relieve stress and put matters to rest, than to allow anger and frustration to continue to fester. “In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold…. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice” (Ephesians 4:26-27,31). © 2026. Robert J. Matthew 5:10-12 (NLT) When you feel pressured by the world because you love Jesus and other people don’t, you need to remember three things: Opposition can make you more like Jesus.

Jesus says in John 15:18-20, “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world.

I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you. Do you remember what I told you? ‘A slave is not greater than the master.’ Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you. And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you” (NLT).

If you’re going to mature and be like Jesus, you’re going to have to go through the things Jesus went through, including loneliness, discouragement, stress, and temptation. Why would God spare you when he didn’t spare his own Son from those things?

Opposition will deepen your faith.

Your faith is like a muscle. A muscle doesn’t grow when you sit in a chair and eat popcorn. A muscle grows by being stretched, strained, and tested.

You’re never going to grow a muscle if no weight is ever pulling in the opposite direction.

If you don’t have opposition in your life, your faith is not growing. The stron-

gest believers in the world right now are those who are having their faith tested the most. The Bible says in 1 Peter 1:7, “These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world” (NLT).

Opposition will lead to eternal rewards.

Matthew 5:10-12 says, “God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven” (NLT).

God will bless everyone who’s persecuted for living for him. But notice that you don’t get rewarded for being rude or obnoxious. If you live a self-righteous life when you get persecuted, you’re not a martyr; you’re a fool.

Whenever you’re harassed for your faith, remember these three things: Opposition can make you more like Jesus, deepen your faith, and lead to eternal rewards in heaven.

It Could Have Been So Much More…

The Other Birth of 1776: How the American Revolution Created Canada

By Douglas G Logan I am perched atop Mansion Hill, overlooking Lake Mendota, in Madison, WI. Here to attend the wedding of a nephew; delighted to be in familiar surroundings. In honor of the opening of the Obama Center, the tan suit will be my uniform of the day.

This is my recap of the first few days of this raucous World Cup. Despite the diluted aspect of a 48 team field, the soccer has been remarkably good. There have been fascinating story lines, appreciative audiences, joy in the stadiums and the streets.

The US team has played with energy and verve. Forget that the first goals in both matches were ‘own goals’…those were forced. Ponchettino has them believing in themselves.

They are playing as an aggressive unit, covering up for occasional bobbles in the back line. We may have found we have a legit striker. Let’s see if we can grow to match the increased quality of competition in the knockout rounds.

So far, so good.

World Cup, for most of us, is a celebration of competition on a global scale. A rubric that unites the human race; an opportunity for any corner of the earth to be successful; player versus player, overriding race, wealth, political creed, language. A true global egalitarian festival.

Two current cultural trends have dampened the ultimate potential enthusiasms of this tournament. The

first is the wanton greed of the organizers, principally FIFA, and its horribly flawed potentate, Gianni Infantino.

The cost of “witness” has been driven to extortionist extremes. It is shameful.

Despite these barriers, audiences have found a way past the turnstiles of avarice. I hope as the competition goes into later phases, and pricing steepens, some ordinary fans will continue to be able to share in “the moment”.

The second influence is the ugly nativism being played out globally, but particularly here in this country. While the movement is not representative of a majority of Americans, those in control of some of the levers of power have cast a shadow on some of the Cup’s ideals. Denial of entry, obstacles to inclusion, fear mongering of “the other”. Happily, the stories coming out of the towns and villages of America have become a rebuke to this faux patriotic leaning. Of particular note, teachers, in the last weeks of the school term, have used the Cup to educate their charges of the beauty of other cultures. The stories from Lawrence, Kansas, 40 miles outside of Kansas City, and how this Republican bastion has warmly hosted the Algerian team, show that Stephen Miller’s obstinate cruel policies are not universally respected or shared.

So far, the Cup has been a grand success. However, it could have been so much more.

These concepts are discussed in greater detail in my book “Why Canada Never Became Part of the United States, North American Wars and Political Intrigue 1774-1871” When we reflect on the geopolitical seismic wave that was the American Revolutionary War, national memory almost exclusively isolates its impact to the southern half of the continent.

We celebrate the fracturing of an empire and the birth of a singular, messy republic. As we celebrate American 250 this week with July 4, almost ZERO mention is being given to Canada growing out of the very same conflict which birthed the United States.

The USA-centric focus overlooks a profound historical reality: the American Revolution did not create just one modern nation. It created two. The very same fires that forged the United States simultaneously cast the modern foundations of Canada. The separation of British North America into two distinct political entities was not an inevitability of geography, but the direct result of wartime choices, ideology, and a century of subsequent political intrigue.

To understand why Canada never became part of the United States, we must look at the Revolution not as a localized struggle for independence, but as a continental civil war that defined two diametrically opposed visions of freedom, governance, and identity.

The revolutionary conflict began with an explicit American assumption that the northern colonies would naturally join the rebellion. In 1774, the Continental Congress issued an open invitation to the people of Canada to send delegates to Philadelphia. When that was met with silence, the response was military. The 1775–1776 invasion of Quebec, led by Richard Montgomery and Benedict Arnold, was designed to forcibly secure the “fourteenth colony.”

The failure of that invasion at the gates of Quebec City was the first inflection point in the divergence of the continent. The local French-Canadian population, having been granted religious freedom and the preservation of French civil law just a year prior via the British Parliament’s Quebec Act of 1774, viewed the fiercely anti-Catholic rhetoric of the New England revolu-

tionaries with immense suspicion. For Quebec, British rule ironically offered a protective shield for their distinct culture against a tide of aggressive, Protestant Anglo-American expansionism. By choosing neutrality or active resistance against the Continental Army, Canada rejected the American republican model at its inception.

The second, and perhaps most permanent, structural foundation of Canada’s separate identity arrived not via bullets, but via refugees. The conclusion of the war in 1783 triggered a mass exodus of roughly 60,000 United Empire Loyalists from the newly independent United States. These were individuals who had remained loyal to the Crown, and who paid for that loyalty with the confiscation of their property, social ostracization, and physical violence.

When these Loyalists flooded into Nova Scotia and the St. Lawrence River valley, they fundamentally transformed the demographics and political DNA of Canada. They brought with them a deep, generational trauma inflicted by American republicanism. If the United States was born of a revolution against imperial authority, modern English-speaking Canada was born of a counter-revolution dedicated to the preservation of that very authority. The Loyalists established an identity defined explicitly by what it was not: it was not American, it was not republican, and it did not value unchecked individual liberty over “Peace, Order, and Good Government.”

This foundational ideological split set the stage for a century of political and military intrigue. The United States repeatedly treated Canada’s separate existence as a temporary geographical clerical error. From Thomas Jefferson’s famous declaration during the War of 1812 that the acquisition of Canada would be “a mere matter of marching,” to the Fenian Raids and the aggressive rhetoric of “Manifest Destiny” in the mid-19th century, the American Republic consistently sought to swallow its northern neighbor.

Dorothy Wilken Leaves A Legacy for Boca Raton and Palm Beach County

By Kartik Krishnaiyer In an era where political discourse is often defined by who can shout the loudest or shut the door the fastest, the passing of Dorothy Wilken this week at the age of 90 feels to me like a definitive passing of a different and in many ways better era of how things were done (or attempted to be done) in our neck of the woods.

Wilken saw Palm Beach County and Boca Raton change and helped facilitate that change while pushing back when she felt it was needed. Across a career spanning decades, she shattered glass ceilings with the quiet confidence of someone who knew she belonged at the table, ultimately serving as the Mayor of Boca Raton, a Palm Beach County Commissioner, and the Palm Beach County Clerk of Court.

My father first met Wilken when he worked at Florida Atlantic University in the early 1980’s and she was the Mayor of the city. I met Wilken for the first time when campaigning in 1998 and got to know her relatively well between that time and her retirement from the Clerk of Court office in 2004.

She was feisty and tough but always respectful even if some South County

leaders who disagreed with her choose to demonize her at every turn. She dealt with that by keeping an open door and an open mind.

To understand the weight of her impact, we must look at the sheer scope of her public service. Arriving in Boca Raton in the mid-1960s, Wilken quickly threw herself into the fabric of the community.

The Mayor’s Gavel: In 1976, she became the first woman to serve as the Mayor of Boca Raton. The Modern Clerk: In 1992, she made history again as the first woman elected as the Palm Beach County Clerk of Court. Over her 12-year tenure, she dragged a paper-heavy and quite frankly previously backward bureaucratic mire of an office into the modern digital era, ultimately earning the prestigious Governor’s Sterling Award for organizational excellence.

It is easy to measure a politician by the plaques on the wall or the laws on the books. But Wilken’s true superpower was her methodology. As Clerk, Mayor, and Commissioner, she operated on a simple, foundational principle: power belongs to the people in a democratic system, and the people deserve to be heard.

Whether in a crowded commission chamber or a bustling clerk’s office, Wilken was notorious for keeping an open mind and an even more open ear. In the 1970s and 80s, South Florida was a crucible of competing interests—developers clashed with environmentalists, and long-time residents clashed with newcomers. Wilken was often right in the thick of it. Yet, she never treated political adversaries as

enemies. The developers would claim she was anti-development but she really wasn’t. She knew it was inevitable but felt it could be done tastefully and in a manner that did not disrupt the charms of Palm Beach County. We did not need Palm Beach to be “Browardized.”

A Blueprint for the Future Dorothy Wilken leaves behind four daughters, 15 grandchildren, and a county that is demonstrably fairer, greener, and more transparent because she chose to serve it.

As we look at the political landscape today, it is easy to grow cynical.

But Wilken’s 90 years of life offer a different narrative. She proved that you can be a fierce advocate for your community without losing your civility. She proved that leadership isn’t about winning an echo chamber; it’s about managing the noisy, complicated, beautiful reality of a diverse public.

Boca Raton and Palm Beach County has lost a giant this week. The best way to honor her memory isn’t just to name a building after her or pass a resolution—it’s to pull up a chair, sit down with someone we completely disagree with, and finally start listening.

This Fourth of July is no ordinary celebration. As the United States marks its 250th anniversary — America 250 — the City of Boca Raton invites residents and visitors to join a landmark Fabulous Fourth on Saturday, July 4, 2026. From a sunrise 5K run to a breathtaking fireworks finale over the water, the City’s signature Independence Day tradition returns with more events, more community spirit, and a patriotic pride befitting one of the greatest milestones in American history.

First held in 1958 at Memorial Park, Boca Raton’s Fourth of July celebration has grown over 68 years into one of South Florida’s most beloved community traditions. In 2026, as America turns 250, the Fabulous Fourth reaches a new milestone of its own — a full slate of free and ticketed events spanning the entire day and reflecting the City’s enduring commitment to community, health, and shared joy.

“In a year when our entire nation pauses to reflect on 250 years of free-

dom, democracy, and the American spirit, Boca Raton is proud to offer a celebration worthy of this once-in-a-generation moment,” said Andy Thomson, Mayor of the City of Boca Raton. “The Fabulous Fourth is a tradition that has brought generations of families together, and this year, we’re honoring both our community’s history and America’s extraordinary story.”

A FULL DAY OF FABULOUS FESTIVITIES Firecracker 5K | 7:15 a.m. | Florida Atlantic University Start Independence Day at a sprint.

The certified Firecracker 5K on the campus of Florida Atlantic University (777 Glades Rd.) is open to the first 1,000 registered runners. Each participant receives a commemorative shirt, finisher medal, and post-race snacks.

Looking for things to do in Boca Raton this Fourth of July weekend?

A full schedule of activities is planned from Friday through Sunday, offering something for residents and visitors of all ages.

Weekend events feature a variety of Fourth of July celebrations and America’s 250th anniversary activities, with live music, food, arts and crafts, community markets, and family-friendly activities. Regularly scheduled outdoor fitness classes will also be available throughout the weekend, including yoga, Zumba, and Pilates sessions.

Each week, The Boca Raton Tribune highlights local events happening throughout Boca Raton and nearby communities. Here is what’s happening this weekend.

Firecracker 5K at Florida Atlantic University The Firecracker 5K will begin at 7:15 a.m. Saturday on the campus of Florida Atlantic University. The certified race is open to the first 1,000 registered runners, with registration costing $40 and increasing after July 1. Participants will receive a race shirt, finisher medal, and post-race snacks; no onsite registration will be available on race day.

Free Fun Saturday at The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum will host a free America 250 and Independence Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Visitors can enjoy free museum admission, a scavenger hunt, face painting, a Paul Revere lantern craft, storytime in the Pioneer Exhibit, and refreshments. Admission is free, and while walk-ins are welcome, attendees are encouraged to RSVP in advance.

America 250: The 14th Colony Exhibit at The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum A new exhibit at The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum explores Florida’s history before statehood, including its time as a loyal British colony during the American Revolution. Rare Revolutionary War artifacts from local collectors are on display alongside panels and images detailing the era. The exhibit

is open through August 27, Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Zumba at the Beach at South Beach Park Pavilion Join Zumba at the Beach on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with instructor Nicole Gasparri. The session combines upbeat music and energetic dance moves with the calming sound of ocean waves for a fun and invigorating workout. The event is open to all skill levels and offers a scenic way to stay active.

4th Of July SoFlo Market SoFlo Market will host a Fourth of July celebration from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday at City Hall. The event features a children’s patriotic parade, live music, food trucks, local vendors, face painting, a bounce house for children ages 10 and younger, and family-friendly activities. Admission is free.

Block Party at Sugar Sand Park Sugar Sand Park will host a free Fourth of July Block Party from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. The family-friendly event will feature children’s crafts, a DJ, yard games, food trucks, and vendors. Crafts will be available while supplies last, and food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Fabulous Finale The Fabulous Finale will take place from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Countess de Hoernle Park. The free waterfront celebration will feature live music, food trucks, vendors, and a 20-minute fireworks display beginning at 9:15 p.m. The event is presented by the City of Boca Raton and the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District.

Nature Connections at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center Gumbo Limbo Nature Center will host Nature Connections, a free educational program, from 11:30 a.m. to noon Sunday. The amphitheater presentation will highlight Florida’s native plants and wildlife and is open to all ages. Reservations are not required, and children must be accompanied by a participating parent or guardian.

Wildflower in Bloom Series at Wildflower Park Saturday Morning Pilates Free, beginner-friendly Pilates classes are held Saturdays at 9 a.m. at Wildflower Park through August 29.

The sessions take place along the scenic Intracoastal Waterway. Participants are asked to bring their own mat and water bottle.

Sunday Morning Yoga Free drop-in yoga sessions continue on Sundays at Wildflower Park through August 30. The drop-in classes are from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Sunday mornings and do not require registration. Participants are asked to bring their own yoga mat and water bottle.

Boca Helping Hands Hosts “Rock the Relief” Concert on July 12

Supporters of Boca Helping Hands (BHH) will rock out to live music by Evolution at “Rock the Relief” on Sunday, July 12 from 6-8 p.m. at Crazy Uncle Mikes, 6450 North Federal Highway, Boca Raton. Presented by Boca Helping Hands’ Heart & Spirit Society, the event will honor long-time supporter David Gart, Esquire and will serve as a celebration of the organization’s Founder’s Day. Many years ago, David Bart, a member of the social action committee at Congregation B’nai Israel, was asked to attend the initial meeting of representatives from churches and synagogues around Boca to discuss the need to feed the underserved. OBITUARY Former Boca Raton Mayor Dorothy Wilken Dies

By Marci Shatzman A woman of firsts ahead of her time, former Boca Raton Mayor Dorothy Wilken has died at the age of 90.

The city’s first woman mayor from March 1976 to February 1977 and in April 1977, Wilken was also the first woman Palm Beach County Clerk of Court.

Tributes are posted from the city and the county.

“The City of Boca Raton joins our community in mourning the passing of Dorothy H. Wilken, a trailblazing public servant whose leadership helped shape our city and Palm Beach County.

Dorothy made history as Boca Raton’s first female mayor, serving beginning in 1976, and later became the first woman elected as Palm Beach County Clerk of Court in 1992. Her dedication to our community left a lasting impact that contin-

ues to be felt today,” according to the city.

“Today, our office remembers former Palm Beach County Clerk Dorothy Wilken, who passed away Monday at the age of 90. She is survived by four daughters and 15 grandchildren. Clerk Wilken was the first woman elected as Clerk of Court in Palm Beach County in 1992. She served as Clerk for 12 years before announcing in 2003 that she would not seek re-election.

During her tenure as Clerk, she led the charge to bring the office into the modern era. The office received the prestigious Governor’s Sterling Award, which recognizes the state’s best-managed organizations among both private businesses and the public sector. “Dorothy Wilken was a true force in Palm Beach County, setting a high standard for transparency and accountability in every office she held,” Clerk

Mike Caruso said. “During her tenure as Clerk from 1992 to 2004, she brought our Clerk’s office into the modern era, upgrading technology and pushing to get our paper records online. We are keeping her family and friends in our thoughts and remembering her significant impact on our community.”

“Born in Pennsylvania, Wilken moved to Boca Raton in 1965 to work at FAU. While in office, she dealt with such issues as growth management for the city, establishment of park impact fees, the purchase of South Inlet Beach, and topless sun bathers. She was one of the originators of the Citizens for Reasonable Growth,” according to the Boca Raton History Society’s mayors’ blurbs. “We owe our quality of life today to her,” said the society’s curator Susan Gillis.

Palm Beach Obituaries Rochelle Chait Rochelle Chait, 85, of Palm Beach Gardens, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026, with those she cherished the most by her side. Born on July 22, 1940, in Buffalo, New York. Daughter of Ruth and Hyman Benatovich. Rochelle graduated from Bennett High School in 1958 and went on to attend Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.

Teena lived a life centered on faith, family, and devotion to those she loved.

She graduated from Forest Hill High School in 1962 and later worked for Southern Bell Telephone in West Palm Beach. It was there that she met the love of her life, Wilfred “Bud” Lang.
