Book Clubs Build Friendship and Community in a Disconnected World

Nine years ago, Palm Beach County resident Brandy Rose founded her book club, So Booked Up. Last year, she followed it by creating a second club, The Right Book Club.

Rose recently spoke about both Palm Beach County book clubs at the 2026 Women’s Forum at the United Nations, discussing how books help build community and foster genuine human connection, often resulting in lifelong friendships.

Through the clubs, participants focus on book discussions, listening to one another, and finding common interests or opinions. In a world increasingly centered around screens, Rose believes those conversations help break down barriers that often exist when people do not interact face-to-face.

“People are missing that eye contact, the natural conversation, the laughter, shared experiences,” Rose said.

Rose began So Booked Up with just five women. Since then, the club has grown to more than 1,000 members, making it one of the largest book clubs in South Florida. The women’s book club places a strong emphasis on friendship, connection, and community, with many members remaining connected outside of meetings.

Over the years, Rose said those connections have led to lifelong friendships. Members often travel together,

celebrate milestones together, and even serve as bridesmaids in one another’s weddings.

“Books are wonderful, but I think the friendships is like the real success story,” Rose said.

The appeal of So Booked Up reaches as far south as Miami and as far north as Orlando, making Palm Beach County a central gathering place for members. The club encourages women to dress up for themselves through its “no jeans” rule while maintaining a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere.

Trigger warnings are also provided for books containing sensitive topics.

That sense of comfort extends to club meetings as well. Photos and videos are limited during discussions, though members may photograph or record visiting authors.

“We want to have that safe space and that safe understanding that whatever you say at book club stays at book club,” Rose said.

Building on the success of So Booked Up, Rose launched The Right Book Club in 2025. The club centers on faith and family and is held in the Grand Ballroom at Palm House Hotel.

During book discussions, Rose said members openly share differing opinions, reflect on their experiences, and often connect themes from books to their own lives. Those conversations encourage thoughtful discussion while helping participants better understand one another.

Rose values this face-to-face connection and believes book clubs encourage people to be present in a way that is increasingly rare.

Beyond providing community through a shared interest, the clubs also give back.

So Booked Up operates as a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization with no membership fees. Instead, members are encouraged to make a suggested $25 donation at meetings. Each month, donations support a featured charity, with June’s beneficiary being Spirit of Giving.

Learning to Lead by Serving

The Benefits of Living with Integrity

In the marketplace, we talk a lot about leadership. In reality, however, much of our daily life centers around serving – where we work, in our homes with our families, our neighborhoods, with those for whom we are responsible, and the churches we attend. In many cases, these involve endless routines in which we organize and learn to optimize so we can manage everything effectively. This is what some people call “servant leadership.”

Where do we find this exhibited?

We can start with the Bible, which gives many examples of serving others. Greatest of all is Jesus, who elevated service to a standard of excellence for whomever He was serving.

In addition to teachings from the Bible, His actions have inspired many literary works that have applied these principles to the workplace and leadership, especially in customer service.

In the book, The Servant Leader

by James C. Hunter, Jesus is presented as the perfect archetype of sacrificial leadership, which prioritizes removing obstacles and meeting the needs of others with humility and genuine moral authority. It inspires not forced obedience but voluntary influence and lasting loyalty, a living example of how serving builds transformative relationships in everyday business life.

Jesus came with a purpose: the salvation of all. That mission produced wonderful outcomes – one being excellence in serving others, one of His roles here on earth. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). Jesus was successful in every situation, teaching and serving as an example for His disciples and all who heard Him preach.

As He had a purpose among us, the moment we decide to follow Him, we should regard those we serve as we would our Lord, doing our very best – whether in a paid or unpaid capacity: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” (Colossians 3:23).

serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves” (Luke 22:27). He did this always with humility. “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet” ( John 13:14).

A true believer who practices the teachings of Jesus should be the best employee or service provider in any field of work, succeeding wherever they serve. However, more than 30 years of professional experience – across commerce, the legal field, and transportation – have shown me that reality can be somewhat different.

What is missing? Look at the example of Joshua, who was chosen to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” ( Joshua 1:9). He relied on the Lord.

Believing in Jesus, we can place our full dependence on Him; every task placed in our hands has been entrusted by Him. That means all our responsibilities should be carried out according to Jesus’ teachings if we are going to achieve true success. We must not forget that God will always be with us in everything we do. This is a fail-safe recipe. I leave you with one question: What contractor or employer would not be pleased to have a faithful, humble “servant of God” in their service? © 2026. So what blessings can you expect when you live your life with authenticity and a pure heart?

You’ll have the blessing of personal confidence.

When you have integrity, you become the kind of person that other people like to be around because you know who you are and where you’re going.

Proverbs 10:9 says, “People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will be exposed” (NLT).

When you don’t have integrity, it’s like walking on an icy path after a snowstorm. You’re putting every bit of your energy into trying not to fall. But when you have integrity, you stand on solid ground.

You’ll have the blessing of leaving a lasting legacy.

Your greatest legacy is your integrity because it will last from generation to generation. Everything else you do gets lost. When you’re gone, your money will be divided and spent among your family. Your work will be given to somebody else. All the trophies you’ve

earned will be thrown in the trash and taken to the dump.

But your character is going to influence the lives of the people around you and even the lives of the next generation. It is a lasting legacy.

The Bible says in Proverbs 20:7, “A righteous person lives on the basis of his integrity. Blessed are his children after he is gone” (GW).

You’ll have the blessing of rewards in eternity.

Matthew 25:21 says, “You are a good and loyal servant. Because you were loyal with small things, I will let you care for much greater things” (NCV).

We tend to think that rewards come from the big moments of life, when everybody is watching. But it’s the small moments that reveal real integrity. Every small word of encouragement you give this week, every small act of kindness, and every time you reject a temptation will be rewarded in eternity.

Integrity is powerful. It makes an incredible difference in your life, not just now, but for your life in eternity!

It Could Have Been So Much More…

I Remember Growing Up where ‘Juneteenth’ was Born

By Douglas G Logan I am perched atop Mansion Hill, overlooking Lake Mendota, in Madison, WI. Here to attend the wedding of a nephew; delighted to be in familiar surroundings. In honor of the opening of the Obama Center, the tan suit will be my uniform of the day.

This is my recap of the first few days of this raucous World Cup. Despite the diluted aspect of a 48 team field, the soccer has been remarkably good. There have been fascinating story lines, appreciative audiences, joy in the stadiums and the streets.

The US team has played with energy and verve. Forget that the first goals in both matches were ‘own goals’…those were forced. Ponchettino has them believing in themselves.

They are playing as an aggressive unit, covering up for occasional bobbles in the back line. We may have found we have a legit striker. Let’s see if we can grow to match the increased quality of competition in the knockout rounds.

So far, so good.

World Cup, for most of us, is a celebration of competition on a global scale. A rubric that unites the human race; an opportunity for any corner of the earth to be successful; player versus player, overriding race, wealth, political creed, language. A true global egalitarian festival.

Two current cultural trends have dampened the ultimate potential enthusiasms of this tournament. The

first is the wanton greed of the organizers, principally FIFA, and its horribly flawed potentate, Gianni Infantino.

The cost of “witness” has been driven to extortionist extremes. It is shameful.

Despite these barriers, audiences have found a way past the turnstiles of avarice. I hope as the competition goes into later phases, and pricing steepens, some ordinary fans will continue to be able to share in “the moment”.

The second influence is the ugly nativism being played out globally, but particularly here in this country. While the movement is not representative of a majority of Americans, those in control of some of the levers of power have cast a shadow on some of the Cup’s ideals. Denial of entry, obstacles to inclusion, fear mongering of “the other”. Happily, the stories coming out of the towns and villages of America have become a rebuke to this faux patriotic leaning. Of particular note, teachers, in the last weeks of the school term, have used the Cup to educate their charges of the beauty of other cultures. The stories from Lawrence, Kansas, 40 miles outside of Kansas City, and how this Republican bastion has warmly hosted the Algerian team, show that Stephen Miller’s obstinate cruel policies are not universally respected or shared.

So far, the Cup has been a grand success. However, it could have been so much more.

Every Juneteenth makes me think fondly of my late dad when he was looking and acting as Texan as he could, when he and my mom and me lived in Galveston in the 1940’s at the Buccaneer Hotel way before Glen Campbell sang that immortal song.

Today we’re remembering how Galveston became the birthplace of Juneteenth, while back then my dad was wowing ‘em nightly playing his violin at Sam Maceo’s ritzy private club, where there was gambling, lots of booze and my dad’s beautiful gypsy violin music was filling The Balinese Room.

On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived on that same island of Galveston to read General Order 3. The City of Boca Raton welcomed Congressman Jared Moskowitz for a ceremonial check presentation recognizing a $2 million federal Congressional Community Project Funding award supporting the Jeffery Street Railroad-Highway Grade Crossing project. ChildNet, a Community-Based Care lead agency that protects abused, abandoned, and neglected children throughout Palm Beach County, hosted their Annual Graduation Celebration on Wednesday, June 3 at Palm Beach State College in Lake Worth to celebrate foster youth who graduated this year. MUNICIPAL City Budget Workshop Sets Stage for Tough Choices

Boca Raton city officials met Thursday afternoon for a special budget workshop to discuss a proposed $747 million budget for fiscal year 2026-27, an 11.8% decrease from the current year’s budget.

The workshop, led by Deputy Director of Management and Budget Mike Middleman, focused on the city’s preliminary budget proposal and capital improvement program.

The preliminary budget includes 22 new general fund positions costing about $3.9 million for 12 firefighters, four lieutenants, four EMS captains, a vehicle technician and a budget analyst.

“It is bringing it up to the same staffing capability and level of service that all of our other fire stations currently have… so that has been a public safety need for quite a while,” Deputy City Manager and CFO James Dervis said of the proposal to fully staff Fire Station 8.

The proposal also adds four police officer positions within the Community Redevelopment Agency and three positions in the Water and Sewer Operating Fund.

To help fund the added fire-rescue staffing, city officials proposed increasing the residential fire assessment fee from $155 to $224 annually and having the commercial and industrial fee at a flat rate per square foot instead of a range.

“We’re seeing a shift of those costs… and rebalancing that according to calls for service,” Zervis said.

The proposed budget also includes dozens of capital improvement projects, with many being for water and sewer infrastructure, railroad safety improvements and city services.

Middleman said the proposed capital improvement program is more than $100 million lower than the previous year’s plan.

Among the largest proposed projects are $25.8 million for wastewater facility upgrades, $14 million for water treatment facility improvements, $12 million for downtown railroad crossing

safety enhancements and $8 million for renovations to the city services building.

The proposed capital improvement plan also sparked debate among council members over spending priorities as state officials continue discussing potential property tax reforms.

The budget allocates $7.5 million toward planning, design and engineering work related to the resident-led Memorial Park enhancement project.

Council Member Jon Pearlman questioned the proposed allocation, arguing that the city should be more cautious about spending as state leaders consider property tax reforms.

“Seven and a half million dollars on design and engineering plans prior to a shovel…given what’s happening with the property tax amendment and the need for budget analysis of budgets and reining in municipal spending, it is outlandish. This is troubling,” Pearlman said.

Council Member Yvette Drucker disagreed with Pearlman’s assumption of the proposal, saying staff had not indicated the entire $7.5 million would be spent before construction begins.

“What I heard was this is encompassing a lot of other projects, and at some point we’re going to start splitting them out into their own projects and assessing those fees,” Drucker said.

Zervis said the $7.5 million allocation is intended to fund planning, engineering and design work while the city determines the project’s scope and funding sources.

“This dollar amount is intended to facilitate that process to get us to that point where we know what we’re doing,” Zervis said.

During public comment, residents weighed in on topics ranging from arts funding and parks to city spending and economic development.

Former Boca Raton City Council member Andrea Levine O’Rourke urged officials to continue supporting arts and cultural programs, arguing they contribute to the city’s economy and quality of life.

“The question before us should not simply be what art and culture cost, but the more important question is, what and how does it give back?” O’Rourke said.

The workshop marked the beginning of the city’s budget process. City officials said additional discussions and revisions will take place before the budget is formally adopted later this year.

How Structural Reorganization is Driving Transparency in Boca Raton

In municipal governance, “transparency” is a frequently deployed buzzword, but operationalizing it requires more than just goodwill—it demands a deliberate structural framework.

A recent interview with Boca Raton City Manager Mark Sohaney reveals that the city is currently undergoing a massive operational overhaul designed to eliminate departmental isolation, streamline public communications, and modernize major capital project pipelines.

By dismantling traditional bureaucratic gridlock, the City Manager’s office is attempting to build a highly synchronized, corporate-style communication and project management apparatus.

Decentralization to Synchronization: The Unified Communications Strategy Historically, public communication in Boca Raton was highly fragmented.

Different entities, such as the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) or the Parks and Recreation Department, managed and promoted their own initiatives independently. In traditional local government models, project updates, zoning requests, and development applications are consolidated into monthly reports before being published.

Boca Raton is actively shifting away from this static model toward real-time data transparency. The city’s development services have transitioned to an interactive, GIS-mapped platform. Residents can click on a map to view the current status of project applications and read staff or committee comments as they are submitted, entirely bypassing the typical 30-day reporting lag.

Public Safety Infrastructure & The Referendum Pipeline The structural shift toward maximum communication is directly colliding with the city’s upcoming infrastructure goals, most notably the pursuit of a new police station complex.

Sohaney outlined an aggressive, highly calculated timeline aimed at a potential March 2027 referendum to coincide with the next council election cycle.

ENTERTAINMENT Boca Raton Celebrates Juneteenth in Hughes Park

Community members gathered Saturday afternoon at Hughes Park in Boca Raton’s historic Pearl City neighborhood to celebrate Juneteenth, turning out despite the summer heat.

A proclamation issued by Mayor Andy Thompson and the Boca Raton City Council recognized June 19, 2026, as Juneteenth in the City of Boca Raton. The proclamation encourages residents to commemorate the day through education, reflection, prayer, and community gatherings such as the event held at Hughes Park. Speakers included Drucker; Marie Hester, president of Developing Interracial Social Change (D.I.S.C.); Rev. Taura Parrish of Macedonia AME Church; and Rabbi Greg Weisman of Temple Beth El of Boca Raton.

In addition to reading the proclamation, Drucker shared remarks on systemic inequalities and Pearl City’s heritage.

“We must always come together as a community and help educate, advocate, and make sure that we protect the rights of all citizens,” Drucker said.

Hester welcomed attendees and emphasized the importance of voting before encouraging community members to support one another.

“Another important thing is to

love one another. And send your love to each other. We need more of it today,” she said.

She discussed Opal Lee, an activist who played a pivotal role in the movement to make Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday.

Weisman closed the ceremony with reflections and prayer. He spoke about the connections between Juneteenth and the Sabbath, as well as creation, human equality, divine compassion, and the responsibility to resist oppression.

ing, civic engagement, equality, justice, community unity, and preserving Pearl City’s historic legacy.

Following the ceremony, attendees enjoyed performances by Junkanoo dancers, Lawvawn The Saxman, Morgan Joyce Heart, and DJ Pearl City.

Exhibitors included the Boca Raton Historical Society, which presented information about the history of the Pearl City neighborhood.

The event also featured basketball, children’s crafts, a sweet potato pie contest, and food for attendees.

Juneteenth is observed annually on June 19 and commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned from Union soldiers that they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The date is widely recognized as marking the effective end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.

D.I.S.C. organized Saturday’s event to commemorate the holiday and bring together members of the Boca Raton community for a day of education, celebration, music, dancing, and food.

Participants will explore the Intracoastal Waterway and mangrove trails while learning about South Florida’s mangrove ecosystem, estuaries, and local wildlife.

Paddlers should be comfortable in the water and able to balance on a paddleboard, and life jackets will be required.

America 250: The 14th Colony Exhibit at The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum A new exhibit at The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum explores Florida’s history before statehood, including its time as a loyal British colony during the American Revolution. Rare Revolutionary War artifacts from local collectors are on display alongside panels and images detailing the era. The exhibit is open through August 27, Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Wildflower in Bloom Series at Wildflower Park Saturday Morning Pilates Free, beginner-friendly Pilates classes are held Saturdays at 9 a.m. at Wildflower Park through August 29.
