Classic Car Show Celebrates Art Polacheck’s 98th Birthday

Friends, car lovers, and community members came together Saturday morning to celebrate the 98th birthday of Arthur (Art) Polacheck with a classic car show at Edgewater at Boca Pointe. More than 40 classic cars and a few modern vehicles were displayed.

The cars paraded around the Edgewater community, were displayed for residents to enjoy, and competed for awards. Residents voted for their favorite vehicles while enjoying 1950s and 1960s music played by a DJ. Polacheck, a World War II veteran, is a car enthusiast and a beloved member of the Boca Raton community. He has been instrumental in several car clubs, won multiple awards at the Boca Concours d’Elegance, an event in which he also helped shape, and has owned hundreds of classic cars throughout his lifetime.

COMMUNITY Classic Car Show Celebrates Art Polacheck’s 98th Birthday

By Caris Weinberg Friends, car lovers, and community members came together Saturday morning to celebrate the 98th birthday of Arthur (Art) Polacheck with a classic car show at Edgewater at Boca Pointe. More than 40 classic cars and a few modern vehicles were displayed.

The cars paraded around the Edgewater community, were displayed for residents to enjoy, and competed for awards.

Residents voted for their favorite vehicles while enjoying 1950s and 1960s music played by a DJ. Polacheck, a World War II veteran, is a car enthusiast and a beloved member of the Boca Raton community. He has been instrumental in several car clubs, won multiple awards at the Boca Concours d’Elegance, an event in which he also helped shape, and has owned hundreds of classic cars throughout his lifetime.

It was after his military service in 1948 that his passion for cars began, leading to many lasting friendships through the car community.

“It’s really a people show,” Art said.

“The cars are secondary.”

For Art, his passion for classic cars has evolved into a community-centered pursuit, building friendships and gaining knowledge through others and independent study for more than 40 years.

“We love to think that we all have a common bond, and the common bond is the cars.”

His love for cars was shared with his late wife, Glorianne, who came from a family of fellow car enthusiasts and understood that passion on a different level.

Together, they took many trips, including one along the East Coast to Massachusetts, sharing their love for both classic cars and travel.

scribed his relationship with his wife.

Friend, fellow car enthusiast, and Rotarian David Dweck organized Saturday’s car show. Dweck emphasized how much Art loves cars and noted that his memory remains remarkably sharp. According to Dweck, Art can recall specific automotive designers, design history, engine sizes, production details, and other technical facts about a wide range of classic cars.

Dweck said Art has earned the nickname “The Professor” within the car community because of his extensive automotive knowledge.

Art’s first car was a 1931 Model A Roadster, and his favorite is the Duesenberg.

The event’s car registration fees were donated to Boca Helping Hands, an organization that Art has been involved with for more than 16 years. He has served meals, bagged groceries, and volunteered in numerous other ways as part of his commitment to serving others, a quality for which he is well known beyond his love for cars.

Boynton Beach City Council Meets June 16 to Discuss Many Issues

The first item of business on the Boynton Beach city commission agenda before the main meeting started was the approval of the City of Boynton Beach comprehensive plan update. The update was a six-month process, including the objectives, maps, and data analysis with a survey by the public and several community engagement meetings. Now the next step for the plan will include going through a local planning agency review and a first reading in July. The Commissioners discussed the need for more time to review the documents and ensure transparency. The plan establishes long range policies for infrastructure planning, and it has been at least 20-25 years since there has been a new plan. Such items as reinvestment in parks and economic development are items that go into the final plan. There will be a draft on the city website for the public to see.

The regular meeting brought up the Boynton Forest issue that will be added to a future agenda at a different meeting.

This is a piece of land owned by Boynton Beach and the city will later decide whether to preserve the land for endangered species like tortoises that live on the land or to develop it. Some say that a study is needed to determine the future of the property, and some feel the land should be preserved.

There were two proclamations for June at the meeting. The first was by Commissioner Thomas Turkin for Family, Faith and Community month which was presented to the Sarubbi Family. The second proclamation was for Men’s Mental Health Month in June presented by Thomas Turkin and received by Reverend Woodrow Hay who stressed the importance of mental health for men. He said that too often men suffer in silence and seeking out help is not a weakness.

Other city announcements included a Juneteenth event at Sara Sims Park on Saturday, June 20th from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

There will also be a Chlorine Flush citywide from July 9-30th to help disinfect the city water. There will also be a 4th of July, Red, White and Blue event on July 4th at 4 p.m. with entertainment, food and a Ferris wheel and transportation to the event.

A presentation was given by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce by the CEO Rick Maharajh updating what the chamber is doing for business growth and networking, community engagement, and advocacy and collaboration.

The chamber wants to expand membership and collaborate with local businesses and community. They already engage in an Adopt a Road Program, a back-toschool drive and other educational programs.

Many residents came to the meeting to comment on different issues including Boynton Forest preservation, the comprehensive plan and a deed restriction on Pence Park. There was also concern about rising rents at some Boynton apartments.

Two major issues discussed on the agenda were the proposed Drone First Responder resolution and the Pence Park Improvement Project, among others. The Drone First Responders contract was approved, emphasizing its importance for public safety despite some budget concerns. The drones provide “real time” feedback and are very helpful to fighting crime and other issues like finding missing children. There will also be no fiscal impact to the city until October of 2027.

It will help ensure safety in the city.

The Pence Park Improvement Project was also discussed in detail. The park will be enhanced according to the plan with pickleball courts and ball fields, a civic room, and an added water play area. Right now, the park is not being put to good use and there are many undesired people occupying the area. The commissioners will further discuss to revise the major site plan with dog waste receptacles, a hedge along the rail road fence and other changes.

Other discussions centered on the CRA disposing of six lots with Lennar at fair market value. There was illegal dumping on the property. This was approved. There was a second reading of Ordinance 26016, regarding access to city-owned property, and 26017, regarding fire chief’s participation in the pension plan. Both passed. There was a first reading of ordinance 26019 which removes the provision allowing smaller units to count as half a unit for density calculations in the Downtown Transit Oriented Development District overlay project-motion that passed. There was a first reading of ordinance 26020 which removes the community design appeal process and streamlines the relief process and amends Chapter 4, site development standards, article 7, external lighting standards-approved. There was a first reading of ordinance 26021which deals with the marine overlay and encourages marine-oriented uses and public waterfront access-approved. There was also a discussion of ordinance 26023 which consolidates and clarifies the city manager’s signature authority for operational efficiency. The ordinance does not change the commission’s authority to enter into contracts. This item of business was tabled for more discussion.

Sticks and Stones Can Hurt – But So Can Words

God Is Always with You, No Matter How You Feel

When I was a boy, people would repeat the saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” That sounded correct, since sticks and stones can certainly inflict physical damage. However, life has taught me that words can be just as hurtful; they just affect us emotionally and mentally.

There is no greater evidence of this than with the development and escalation of what has been called “cyberbullying.” Individuals, especially young people, are being targeted on social media, text messages, and emails with vicious verbal attacks. Sadly, too many of these vulnerable children and teenagers have suffered great distress as a consequence, sometimes resulting in suicide.

We would like to think this is not the case in the adult world, especially the marketplace, but we all know that is not true. In some settings, verbal abuse between superiors and subordinates, as well as between coworkers, is an everyday reality. Outbursts of anger, colleagues being demeaned in public, vindictive emails being sent, and the use of other forms of communication to disparage others are all too common.

In most cases, these are counterproductive at best, weapons for serious harm at worst. Perhaps this is one reason the Scriptures are replete with admonitions against the abuse of people with our words, whether uttered orally or presented in written form.

Both the Old and New Testaments remind us of the incredible power and potential peril of the use and misuse of words, especially when spoken. Here are some examples that apply to what we say aloud and in written form: Power in a small package. We dare not underestimate the incredible impact of the things we say. We should choose our words wisely. “…the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.

It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell” ( James 3:5-6).

Just as a hammer can pound a nail into wood and also smash someone’s thumb, the tongue has the capacity to serve and benefit others, or to deliver harsh criticism and profane language. “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be” ( James 3:9-10).

Within our control. Just as a marksman would not fire a rifle before taking proper aim, we would be wise to remember that if we do not calculate the impact of the words we speak or write, they can become weapons just as easily as means for communicating information, ideas, and feelings.

We have the ability to choose when to speak and when not to, as well as what to say and how it should be said.

“When there are many words, transgression is not avoidable, but he who restrains his lips is wise” (Proverbs 10:19).

Tools for encouraging and building up. With so much negativity in our world, a conscious effort to rein in our words, releasing them only when they will be of positive benefit to others, as well as ourselves, can set us apart where we work in positive ways. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen” (Ephesians 4:29). © 2026. But as you grow in faith, he will wean you off these dependencies.

God’s omnipresence and the manifestation of his presence are two different things. One is a fact; the other is often a feeling. It’s a fact that God is omnipresent; he’s always there, even when you’re unaware of him. Even when you don’t feel his presence, you can always trust the fact that God is with you. His presence is too profound to be measured just by emotion.

Yes, God wants you to sense his presence, but he’s more concerned that you trust him than feel him. We live by faith, not by sight or by our feelings.

The situations that will stretch your faith most will be those times when life falls apart and God is nowhere to be found. That happened to a man named Job. On a single day he lost everything—his family, his business, his health, and all his possessions. And then, for 37 chapters in the Old Testament book of Job, God said nothing!

How do you praise God when you don’t understand what’s happening in your life and God is silent? How do you stay connected in a crisis without com-

munication? How do you keep your eyes on Jesus when they’re full of tears?

You do what Job did: “Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: ‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised’” (Job 1:20-21 NIV).

Tell God exactly how you feel. Pour out your heart to him. Unload every emotion that you’re feeling. Job did this when he said, “I can’t be quiet! I am angry and bitter. I have to speak” (Job 7:11 GNT).

He cried out when God seemed distant: “Oh, for the days when I was in my prime, when God’s intimate friendship blessed my house” (Job 29:4 NIV).

Whether or not you can feel God today, you can trust that he’s there with you. Are you full of doubt, anger, fear, grief, confusion, or questions? Bring it all to God. He is with you, he is for you, and he can handle all your questions and concerns.

The Bible says, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31 NIV).

Talk It Over Think about a time when you couldn’t feel God’s presence. How did you stay connected to him during that time?

Why is God more concerned about your faith than your feelings?

What person do you go to when life gets tough? What do you say to them that you also need to say to God?

I have always hated them. “Letters of Intent”. “Memorandums of Understanding.” They are usually drafted in language that is so vague that multiple interpretations can arise from them. They are never enforceable.

Agreements to agree. They are notorious not for what they say, but for what they don’t.

That’s what we got. Negotiated by two real estate hot shots. Two monkeys.

The organ grinder, desperate for anything he can sell as a victory, gave the OK for a page and a half of words. He says we won but won’t let us see the words. Once he does, he’ll spin them one way, the Mullahs will spin them another way. The Art of the Ordeal.

“It only takes one.”

One drone, hitting one oil tanker, can bring the global GDP to a halt.

Trump isn’t opening the Straits. Neither is Iran. The Straits will be opened, or not, by global insurance companies and their risk managers. And, all it will take is one hit on one of those $100M ships to close the vulnerable passage way again. That’s the weapon Trump handed the Mullahs. Better than a nuclear bomb. The Law of Unintended

Before this blunder, the Straits of Hormuz were an International Waterway. Under the MOU, they are under the control of Iran and Oman. How the hell is this a step forward? What am I missing here?

Axios is reporting that Rubio, Ratcliffe and Hegseth are experiencing a lot of heartburn over this deal. Lindsay Graham is having conniptions. Trump is not going to Switzerland to sign it.

He is sending JD. Do I smell “fall guy”?

This is the problem with authoritarianism. If you pick a dope to be your guy, all you wind up with is an authoritarian dope.

This picture was taken just before the turn of the century, one snowy cold day out on Long Island. There I had a second home to where I’d retreat on weekends from hectic workloads ensnarled in that ever-jumping thumping Manhattan. These days I think of my late great pal J. Reuben Silverbird whenever I receive SWRA’s request for a food distribution gift for Native Americans, of which Silverbird was for much of his colorful life a consummate and faithful leader SWRA refers to Southwest Reservation Aid, a program in Partnership With Native Americans (PWNA) providing food, water, and emergency relief to Native American communities across Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and California, whom I hope you’ll support as well as it’s truly serving a great cause of aiding those Americans whose ancestors didn’t come to America as immigrants but were here from the start.

Silverbird was a multi-talented, Native American friend of mine for many years before sadly he left us in late November 2021 due to unexpected complications from COVID-19 and I’m sure he’s now happily reunited with beloved tribes and Native American friends and ancestors in heaven.

Of course, I give to SWRAdonation. org/hunger and hope you will too but allow me to share some memories of my departed friend who had inspired us for so any years sharing his God-given talent to sing and to act, to play the guitar and flute and always to make us happy and laugh.

Blessed with an arsenal of talent, he was an accomplished actor, musician, and so much fun. Silverbird appeared on Stage, Film and TV in the USA, Europe and Asia, with such stars as Diana Ross and Eartha Kit as well as solo one-man shows, singing his own original compositions. He played guitar, flute and other percussive instruments during his Native Spiritual Musical Concerts and traveled to the Four Corners of Mother Earth, with The Universal Peace Federation.

On a one-on-one basis, my Native American pal was a sheer delight to hang out with as he was forever performing and so proud to be part Apache, part Cherokee.

I first met Reuben one night while

he was singing at a bar on the upper east side of Manhattan and from that night on, we were dear friends until his death.

Silverbird Restaurant Once I helped Silverbird nail the perfect name for the Native American restaurant he opened on the upper west side of Manhattan. Speaking of food, unfortunately today too many Native American boys and girls experience hunger, an utter anomaly in a prosperous country like ours. It’s the reason I urge you to support another nonprofit, St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, SD, as I do, which I’m sure Silverbird appreciates. Unfortunately, despite America’s reputation as a “nation of abundance,” hunger exists across South Dakota’s nine reservations, says Fr. Greg Shill, St. Joseph’s chaplain.

And when you’re in an uplifting mood, consider also supporting Native American Rights Fund (NARF) and its efforts to educate the public about Indian rights, laws and issues.

OPEC Once we visited Silverbird when he was living in Vienna, Austria and had him take part in an event we staged outside of OPEC headquarters there. Palm Beach County Unveils New Park Sign Honoring Ilene Long

By Caris Weinberg The Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department, alongside members of the Old Trail Neighborhood community, unveiled the new sign for Ilene Long Old Trail Park during a ceremony held June 8 at the park, located at 2739 Old Military Trail.

The event brought together residents, community leaders, and County staff to honor the life and legacy of Ilene Long, a dedicated advocate and founder of the Old Trail Neighborhood Watch. Long passed away in May 2025 at the age of 88.

A resident of the neighborhood since the 1940s, Long was recognized for her role in many community improvements. She worked closely with local law enforcement and the Coun-

ty’s Community Revitalization Team to help enhance safety and connectivity throughout the neighborhood.

Her efforts contributed to the installation of street lighting, the organization of annual community cleanups and barbecues, and continued neighborhood engagement.

Long also played a key role in advocating for the park that now bears her name. She regularly attended County meetings, hosted neighborhood discussions, and built relationships with Palm Beach County staff to help address community needs.

The renaming of the park serves as a tribute to Long’s decades of service and commitment to improving the lives of residents in the community.

Miracle League Adds Baseball Field for Persons with Disabilities to John Prince Park in Lake Worth

By Stacy Carchman The Miracle League Field had a groundbreaking ceremony today at John Prince Memorial Park. This was in conjunction with the Miracle League, an organization in Palm Beach County that gives every child with special needs the opportunity to play baseball.

The organization has grown tremendously throughout the years. It was cofounded by Delray residents Jeff and Julia Kadel, parents of three active boys in 2005. Julia is a certified health coach and both her and her husband use their talents to bring this special baseball league to parents. They presented their plan for the team to the Delray Beach City Commission back in 2005 and with grant money and money raised through fundraising grew the team. In 2007, the Miracle League of Delray Beach started its first season at Bucky Dent Baseball School with two teams and 20 plus players and twenty plus volunteer buddies. In 2010, the grand opening of the Miracle League Field featured four teams, and in 2015 on their 10th anniversary, they had six teams, two coaches per team and 75 plus community volunteers. Today, they have expanded even more and broke

ground on the newest Miracle League field in John Prince Park.

Before Juneteenth, There Was May Federal Rail Safety Initiative Drives 20th: Florida’s Untold History of 30% Drop in Brightline Incidents

When Juneteenth became a federal holiday, it marked a massive milestone in America’s collective historical memory. Across the nation, people now pause on June 19th to commemorate the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas. But history is rarely a single, sweeping moment.

For those who grew up in the Sunshine State, the national focus on Texas often overshadows a deeply localized truth: Juneteenth is not Florida’s Emancipation Day. Long before the Union army reached Galveston, the ripples of freedom arrived in Florida’s capital. In Florida, the true date of liberation is May 20, 1865.

The Capital That Stood Alone To understand why freedom arrived when it did, you have to understand the unique geography of Florida during the Civil War. At the time, Florida was largely unformed wilderness compared to its southern neighbors. It didn’t have booming metropolises, but it did boast three major, bustling towns: Pensacola, Key West, and Jacksonville.

Because of their coastal access, each of these three towns was occupied by Union forces quite early in the conflict.

However, the seat of government sat inland.

Tallahassee held a specific, stubborn distinction: it was the only Confederate capital east of the Mississippi River that was not captured by Union troops during active combat. Growing up in Florida decades ago, this fact was frequently taught as a badge of state pride—a “lost cause” boast that, thankfully, few residents care to brag about any longer.

But that military isolation had a devastating human cost. Because Tallahas-

see remained uncaptured, the brutal machinery of slavery kept churning there uninterrupted throughout the war.

Why May 20th Matters Also While President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation technically abolished slavery in the rebelling states in 1863, a decree is only as powerful as the army enforcing it.

By 1865, Tallahassee was no longer Florida’s largest population center, but it was the undisputed heart of its plantation economy. The fertile red clay hills surrounding Leon County held the state’s highest concentration of massive cotton plantations and, consequently, the highest population of enslaved African Americans. For them, freedom wasn’t a legal theory; it required physical presence.

That presence came in the form of Union Brigadier General Edward M. McCook.

On May 20, 1865—eleven days after the final Confederate armies in the region surrendered—General McCook stood on the steps of the Knott House in downtown Tallahassee and read the Emancipation Proclamation aloud to the public.

History is a mosaic of local stories. While Juneteenth rightly serves as a powerful national umbrella for celebrating the end of slavery in the United States, blanket narratives can accidentally erase local heritage.

Celebrating June 19th shouldn’t mean forgetting May 20th. For Floridians, recognizing the specific date that freedom echoed across the steps of a Tallahassee home is a vital way to honor the real people who waited, survived, and finally claimed their liberty right in our own backyard.

In a significant milestone for rail safety, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced yestreday that trespassing incidents and train-vehicle collisions on Brightline Florida fell by 30% yearover-year in the first quarter of 2026.

The drop in incidents follows the expedited deployment of a $25 million federal investment aimed at modernizing infrastructure along one of the country’s busiest higher-speed rail corridors. Department of Transportation (DOT) officials highlighted that the funds—which they noted had been delayed under the previous administration—were quickly mobilized to secure railroad crossings and protect local communities.

Infrastructure Upgrades in Action The safety initiative focuses on a comprehensive overhaul of the Brightline and Florida East Coast Railway corridor, stretching 195 miles from Miami to Cocoa. To date, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has funded a total of $42 million for rail safety projects in the region.

Key improvements designated under the funding include: Crossing Modernization: Upgrading 327 highway-rail grade crossings (with 173, or 53%, already completed as of June 5, 2026).

Physical Barriers: Installing 33 miles of protective fencing and delineators.

Visual Alerts: Implementing rail dynamic envelopes (RDE), roadway striping, and “Do Not Stop on Tracks” signage.

Leadership Responds Federal officials emphasized a renewed urgency in clearing a backlogged pipeline of infrastructure grants to achieve these safety metrics.

“This administration is delivering real results for the American people at the Speed of Trump,” said Secretary Duffy. “While the last administration sat on these critical resources, we acted quickly to deliver them swiftly so that Floridian families could be safer. We’re going to continue to partner with Brightline Florida and FDOT to cut trespassing incidents with new crossing technology and safety enhancements and expand this success nationwide.”

The initiative addresses the leading causes of railway fatalities across the United States. According to federal data, grade crossing collisions and pedestrian trespass events account for the vast majority of rail-related casualties.

“Grade crossing collisions and pedestrian events are responsible for 96% of rail-related deaths in the U.S.,” said FRA Administrator David Fink. “We are confident that these investments will help prevent further needless deaths and injuries due to grade crossing collisions and trespassing.”

Moving forward, the FRA stated it will continue to work closely with Florida stakeholders to complete the remaining crossing upgrades and clear the remaining backlog of inherited transit grants.

Juneteenth Celebration at Hughes Park D.I.S.C. of Pearl City will host a Juneteenth celebration at Hughes Park on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event will feature live music, a com-

munity basketball tournament, games, food vendors, and entertainment for attendees of all ages. A 45-minute program recognizing the cultural significance of Juneteenth will include guest speakers, performances, contests, and a Sweet Potato Pie Contest.

FAU Summer Concert Band at Mizner Park Amphitheater The FAU Summer Concert Band, conducted by FAU Music Director Kyle Prescott, will perform Sunday as part of the city’s free Summer in the City concert series. Doors open at 4 p.m., and the concert begins at 5 p.m.Limited seating is available, and attendees are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets.

Zumba at the Beach at South Beach Park Pavilion Join Zumba at the Beach on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with instructor Nicole Gasparri. The session combines upbeat music and energetic dance moves with the calming sound of ocean waves for a fun and invigorating workout. The event is open to all skills and offers a scenic way to stay active.

Sensational Snakes at Daggerwing Nature Center Daggerwing Nature Center will host its Sensational Snakes program Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The family-friendly event will feature a naturalist-led presentation exploring the fascinating world of snakes, including an opportunity to meet one up close. The

program is open to all ages, costs $5 per participant, and reservations are required.

Creativity by the Coast at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center Gumbo Limbo Nature Center will host its Creativity by the Coast workshop Saturday at 10 a.m. The handson program combines art and science, inviting adults and teens to draw inspiration from nature through guided creative activities. June’s workshop will focus on outdoor nature sketching, while August’s session will feature watercolor explorations; minors must participate with an adult.

America 250: The 14th Colony Exhibit at The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum A new exhibit at The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum explores Florida’s history before statehood, including its time as a loyal British colony during the American Revolution. Rare Revolutionary War artifacts from local collectors are on display alongside panels and images detailing the era. The exhibit is open through August 27, Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Boca Raton Museum of Art Creation Station – Magic Carpet Journeys The Boca Raton Museum of Art will host Creative Station: Magic Carpet Journeys on Saturday from 11 a.m. to

4 p.m. The monthly drop-in program invites children ages five and older to explore featured artworks through gallery activities before creating their own art projects using a variety of materials and techniques.

Cloud 9 – Painting Workshop The Boca Raton Museum of Art will host the Cloud 9 painting workshop on Sunday. The immersive class will guide participants in painting expressive summer skies, focusing on techniques such as blending, layering, and shaping clouds to create movement and depth. Instructor Renee Rey, an award-winning South Florida artist and educator, will lead the session, with prior painting experience recommended.

Wildf lower in Bloom Series at Wildflower Park Saturday Morning Pilates Free, beginner-friendly Pilates classes are held Saturdays at 9 a.m. at Wildflower Park through August 29.

The sessions take place along the scenic Intracoastal Waterway. Participants are asked to bring their own mat and water bottle.

Sunday Morning Yoga Free drop-in yoga sessions continue on Sundays at Wildflower Park through August 30. The drop-in classes are from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Sunday mornings and do not require registration. Participants are asked to bring their own yoga mat and water bottle.

The Kid Officer: Not Your Average Holocaust Movie

On Saturday night, the Movies of Delray had a premiere of the movie, “The Kid Officer” a documentary by Producer John Rokosny. Both the producer and his partner, Andriette Redmann, who was also very involved in the production, were there in person to answer questions after Jun 18 -Jun 25, 2026

the showing.

This movie was very intelligent and thought provoking and was not a typical Holocaust movie. It is a true coming-of-age story about a young Jewish boy who had to leave his homeland of Austria during the Nazi occupation and traveled on an incredible and trying journey that landed him in Palestine. Before the Nazi invasion in Austria, Friederich Biermann was living a great life with his family in a penthouse in Vienna and his family was well off with an established family business. When the Nazis came, they took over his family’s business and home and were forced out.

The family decided to leave Austria and traveled to France, where they stayed for eight months with little to eat and living with a circus troupe in a Paris hotel.

The family then obtained a temporary visa to travel to Palestine aboard a ship, where the accommodations were terri-

ble. It was in Palestine where they made a life for many years among Arabs and others. Fred went on to join the Haganah, the main paramilitary organization that operated in the British Mandate for Palestine. He fought for the establishment of the Jewish State of Israel. The Haganah eventually integrated into the Israeli Defense Forces after the Israeli declaration of independence.

The movie’s use of animation to show Fred’s childhood recollections were very appropriate to document his young mind and point of view of his childhood anxieties during the upheaval he experienced. He was uprooted at an early age to Palestine, a desert destination that was very foreign to him.

But through it all, Fred persevered and made a life there. It was later that he came to settle in the United States where he served in the Army and studied dentistry at one point.

In the United States in later years, Fred went on to raise a family. Producer, John Rokosny found Fred through the Shoah Foundation, that videotapes testimonials of Holocaust survivors. His story stood out and was eventually used in this documentary. Through Fred’s eyes and testimony, his story comes alive.

Through the animation, testimony and music, the movie conveys a powerful story and emphasizes the importance of resilience, hope and friendship. Fred is still alive today and active.

Present at the screening was Artist Smadar Livne who made a mural of Fred’s life. She is an award-winning artist born and raised in Israel with a local studio in Lake Worth. Also at the showing was local artist, Yaacov Heller.

The movie will run at Movies of Delray through Thursday and premiered in New York City and there are plans for the premiere in Austria.

Palm Beach Father’s Day Roundup: June 19–21

From Juneteenth celebrations and family-friendly festivals to comedy shows, concerts, and special Father’s Day outings, there is no shortage of activities taking place throughout the area.

One of the weekend’s biggest attractions is Otakufest 2026, an anime, cosplay, and gaming festival taking

place at the Palm Beach Convention Center. The three-day event will feature video games, cosplay competitions, an artist alley, vendors, and activities for fans of all ages. Whether you’re looking for family fun, live entertainment, or a unique way to celebrate Father’s Day, there’s something for everyone this weekend.

Delray Beach Friday, June 19 At 8 p.m., the Delray Beach Playhouse will present Flower Power Revival, a musical tribute celebrating the iconic sounds of the late 1960s. Tickets start at $59.

Saturday, June 20 Old School Square will host a Juneteenth Celebration from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The event will feature live music, food trucks, vendors, cultural activities, and family-friendly entertainment throughout the day.

Also at Old School Square, visitors can enjoy the Summer GreenMarket, featuring fresh produce, baked goods,

artisan treats, and live music. Admission is free.

West Palm Beach June 19–21 The Otakufest 2026 convention will take place all weekend at the Palm Beach Convention Center, 650 Okeechobee Boulevard. The popular event celebrates anime, cosplay, gaming, and pop culture while offering interactive experiences, merchandise vendors, and an artist alley.

OBITUARY Vesper Quarti Jordan Her nephews Chuck and Mark (Andria) Beggs and niece Cindy (Chris) Perry, great nieces/nephews, and many friends survive Vesper.

Vesper married the love of her life, Thomas J Jordan, on 09/25/1982, and cherished the time they spent together.

She missed him deeply after his 2002 death and kept his memory alive as she often recollected their antics during their life together.

Vesper graduated with a BS degree in Vesper passed on June 8, 2026, peace- Nursing and an MA degree in Speech Pafully with family by her side. She was thology from Temple University, as well preceded in death by her parents, Ches- as additional post-graduate work at UCco/Linda Quarti, husband Tom Jordan, LA and beloved brother/sister-in-law Bill & She had a long and varied career Dorothy Beggs. working in nursing, business manage-

ment and speech therapy. She worked as Head Nurse (Hahnemann Hospital), Private Duty/Staff nurse (The Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital), Retina Nurse (Wills Eye Hospital), Speech Pathologist (Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center), Clinical Instructor/Nurse VA Long Beach CA/Philadelphia PA) Occupational Health Nurse/Marketing Support (IBM San Francisco/ L.A./Boca Raton/ Philadelphia, Speech Pathologist (Sundance Rehabilitation West Palm Beach), Director of Speech Pathology (Boca Raton Rehabilitation Center), Speech Pathologist (San Francisco Unified School District), and Per Diem Speech Pathologist (Nurse Care Co/Bayada Nurses/Select Rehab) until her retirement.

Vesper was passionate about living in the big city, loved walking through the city to run errands/browse the library/attend local events, art fairs, and festivals.

She enjoyed shopping at Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, QVC, and Trader Joe’s, enjoyed fine foods including See’s Chocolate, and enjoyed adding to her purse/ shoe/jewelry collection.

Friends often describe her as a kind and gentle soul, and she will certainly be missed.

Lynn University’s softball program is stepping into a bold new era. The university officially named its brand-new, stateof-the-art softball facility the Tish Celenza Messinger Stadium, honoring longtime university supporter and accomplished athlete Tish Messinger.
