Happy Thanksgiving, Boca Raton!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Thanksgiving. The holiday that celebrates everything from the Pilgrim harvest to Charlie Brown to the Macy’s Parade will be held Thursday, Nov. 26 in millions of homes around this nation.

In the United States, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition is commonly, but not universally, traced to a poorly documented 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts.

The original Plymouth feast and the idea of “giving thanks” were prompted by a good harvest that followed a difficult winter.

Community Troop 337 Hold Successful 7th Annual Endless Spaghetti Dinner

Boy Scout Troop 337 held their 7th Annual Endless Spaghetti Dinner this past weekend at the First United Methodist Church of Boca Raton.

At the end of the night, Troop 337 had served over 700 meals throughout the event, in what has been called one of the most successful events in its seven-year history.

The funds that were raised during the event will be used for upcoming Troop 337 activities such as Scout Advancement Weekend, Zipline event, USS Yorktown, and camping.

BOCA RATON, Fla. (November 20, 2015) – Florida Atlantic University President John Kelly delivered his second State of the University address today underlining the theme “Be Bold, Be Daring, Be FAU.” The captivating multimedia presentation focused on FAU’s strategic plan, and highlighted student and faculty achievements, as well as FAU’s 10 Colleges and six campuses.

The event also celebrated successes of various FAU alumni.

“Our strategic plan outlines both strengths and aspirations and meets the challenges that the University faces,” said President Kelly. “We outlined our strategic plan in a way that would allow FAU to be the fastest growing university in the country.”

FAU alumnus Jeremy Murphy spoke to President Kelly live via satellite from New York City, where he serves as CBS’ vice president for communications. Also in attendance was actor Marc Kudisch, a 1988 graduate of FAU who currently stars as Senate Majority Leader Henry Mitchell in season four of Netflix’s House of Cards.

The program included a performance by Emil & Dariel Rock Cellos, finalists from season 14 of NBC’s America’s Got Talent.

and local residents, with Emil, 18, a junior majoring in pre-med at FAU. A Unity Step Show also was performed by sororities and fraternities within FAU’s National Panhellenic Council.

President Kelly said he plans to continue to foster in a new and improved FAU, building on the old traditions upon which the University was founded.

“My plan for Florida Atlantic University is to proceed and lead with ‘unbridled ambition,’” he said.

Honor Our Veterans Every Day Florida may have the reputation as one of the most military- and veteran-friendly states.

But for widows or widowers of veterans who moved here in hopes of taking advantage of the Florida veteran homestead exemption, they may have another story.

Ask the Boca Raton grandmother who gave State Representative Bill Hager an ear full recently after she was denied the perk.

The woman had moved here from California after her husband’s death so she could be near her children and grandchildren. She reached out to Hager because after all, her husband served our nation, not California.

Hager, like I, concurred.

Whether one relocates to the Sunshine State for a job or to retire here, to be with their children or grandchildren, all are welcome, Hager said.

And allowing surviving spouses an exemp-

tion on their property taxes, as if the veteran had lived here, is the least we can do to thank them for their service to our Country, he continued.

Hager and another lawmaker, State Sen. Jeff Brandes, are sponsoring two bills - House Bill 611 and Senate Bill 804 - to make sure that if a new resident owned a home anywhere in the country, they qualify for the disabled or deceased veterans’ exemption.

“Extending this property tax benefit to surviving spouses is a small acknowledgment of those sacrifices made for this country, and it further solidifies Florida’s status as the most veteran friendly state in the nation,” said Brandes, a combat veteran who has witnessed firsthand the incredible sacrifice spouses make when their husband or wife is deployed overseas.

I’m sure word of their plan was welcoming news to the widow as well as others

considering making the Sunshine State their new home.

While Veteran’s Day is in the rear view mirror, I’m among those who think it is never too late to show gratitude.

My hope was to use my last column to thank all the vets for their service but the pressing news of the day prevailed.

None-the-less, I tip my hat to all the men and women who served in the U.S. armed forces.

It never ceases to amaze me when I hear people utter the words, “Happy Veteran’s Day”. Many say it as if they’re just going through the motion. It’s mere lip service.

They have no idea the significance of the day.

If we truly care for our veterans and want the best for them, we need to take the time to show them our sincere appreciation.

And by the way, you do not have to wait

until Veteran’s Day or Memorial Day to show your appreciation to a service member. Right here in your community, there are dozens of veterans who are in need – financially and emotionally. Many are still suffering silently within and need someone to listen to them as they cry for help. I saw a statistic recently where 22 veterans are committing suicide.

I visit the Veteran’s Administration hospital in Riviera Beach occasionally and the hard-working staff there could use some volunteers.

The next time you consider how best to show your gratitude to a veteran, consider writing a check to your local veteran’s service organization, volunteering at the VA hospital or just spend some quiet time listening to their deep stories.

Our veterans have earned my thanks and respect and deserve to be honored every day.

The Power of Words Whether on the printed page, through personal conversation, or via public speaking, words are instruments wielding great power; they can promote healthy, productive ends as they can also advance inflammatory, destructive causes. Any idea can become incendiary, whether for good or for ill, through the words employed to express it, whether to a multitude, or just to one individual!

Through the years I’ve come to know in person several individuals who were influenced by something they heard in their childhood or youth, which inspired them into the direction that led to their eventual success!

Words are not supposed to become museum pieces, nor should they be confined to dictionaries only; they need to be learned and properly put together in the composition of dynamic ideas which can be truly revolutionary for salutary purposes, just like words used improperly have led to war in the past, as much as in the present day manifold conflicts continue to occur!

What we express with our lips, or through our writing, should always have edifying aims, rather than inflicting negative sentiments which lead to incendiary, destructive consequences. History is a witness to both possibilities, and currently we still contemplate manifold examples of what is gener-

ated by either creative, benevolent thoughts, or from provocative, malevolent statements!

Michael Hyatt, a contemporary author and publisher, suggests as a basic first step in our use of words, something anyone can easily fulfill. He wrote, “Wonderful things happen when you commit something to writing.” Once recorded, thoughts can more easily influence and impact!

I often say, from experience, that thoughts are fugitive; they run away and disappear very rapidly. Thus, whenever any new idea worth keeping enters our mind, we should immediately capture it, just as a policeman effectively imprisons those he seeks to apprehend!

Once a key idea is permanently recorded on paper or elsewhere, one can later improve it, amplify it, modify the sequence of the words which compose it, so as to convey that thought with clarity and greater possibility of impacting those who shall read it.

Sadly, far too many good thoughts go to waste because they are never captured when they enter a person’s mind, much less put into writing for later use. As a result, they permanently vanish, thus becoming incapable of impacting many lives, present and future, as they could, had they been carefully recorded.

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Cosa Duci Artisan Italian Bakery & Cafe…Delizioso!

Cosa Duci Homemade Italian Bakery has been offering locals the most exquisite taste of Italy for 7 years, and hopefully it will continue to do so for many more.

“When you walk in you get that sense of

nostalgia, it reminds you of home cooking, of family, it reminds you of your grandma’s cookies,” said Silvia Fausto, co-owner of Cosa Duci and daughter of founder Giovanna Cimino. “It is very artisan, we don’t use artificial ingredients, it’s just made how you would at home, from scratch.”

The cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and heavenly Italian dishes and cookies make the customers feel at home.

“Our idea is really to do something you would find in Italy in a small bakery or cafe, they call it a ‘pasticceria’, which really is finger food and quick bites,” stated Fausto.

Cimino, owner of Cosa Duci, cooks the delightful food for the customers and she’s present at the bakery interacting with them all the time, creating a special bond with the customers.

“We really don’t have a menu, every day whatever my mom feels like cooking, that’s what we serve,” expressed Fausto. “We post the menu online in the morning at 9 am, we tweet the menu, and we put it on Facebook.

We have a lot of followers who look every

morning to see what we’re cooking,” continued Fausto. “It’s always whatever is fresh that day, and what my mom feels like cooking, So that’s like our special signature.”

Cosa Duci is a family business that started out for one important reason, to raise money to donate for research of multiple sclerosis (MS) in hope to find a cure.

“Well the main reason is my brother has multiple sclerosis and we donate a portion of our proceeds to MS, to research for MS,” said Fausto about the motivation to start the business.

Before Cosa Duci, Cimino already had a lot of experience in the baking world as she was an employee at Whole Foods Markets, where she first showed off her baking skills.

For Cimino baking is not just work, it’s her passion.

“Everyday she will bring her own recipes in, bring cookies and things like that,” affirms Fausto. “One day one of the men said ‘oh, we should sell your biscotti at Whole Foods’ so it got her thinking and we created a small location where we started produc-

tion for Whole Foods, so we sell to Whole Foods Markets all over Florida now,” continued to explain Fausto “We sell cookies and cakes to them, and little by little it just grew into this little cafe and we do production in the back.”

Cosa Duci also provides a catering menu for to-go foods, and they do baskets and breakfast arrangements as well.

“It’s not for picky eaters, you have to have an open mind and you have to love Italian food,” confessed Fausto.

Walking into the bakery feels like being transported to an Italian home, maybe like a family house in Sicily, Italy, where Cimino is from.

“A lot of the furniture here has been given to us from customers and really I mean a lot of it,” said Fausto. “We try to keep it very homey, it’s home decorated, vintage furniture.”

Happy Thanksgiving, Boca Raton!

In later years, religious thanksgiving services were declared by civil leaders such as Governor William Bradford of Massachusetts, who planned a thanksgiving celebration and fast in 1623. But the practice of holding an annual harvest festival like this did not become a regular affair in New England until the late 1660s.

Pilgrims and Puritans who began emigrating from England in the 1620s and 1630s carried the tradition of Days of Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving with them to their new home in New England. Several days of Thanksgiving were held in early New England history that have been identified as the “First Thanksgiving”, including Pilgrim holidays in Plymouth in 1621 and 1623, and a Puritan holiday in Boston in 1631.

Thanksgiving proclamations were made mostly by church leaders in New England up until 1682, and then by both state and church leaders until after the American Revolution. During the revolutionary period, political influences affected the issuance of Thanksgiving proclamations.

Various pronouncements were made by royal governors, by John Hancock, General George Washington and the Continental Congress, each giving thanks to God for events favorable to their causes.

As president of the United States, George Washington proclaimed the first nationwide Thanksgiving celebration in America marking November 26, 1789, “as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be

observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favours of Almighty God.” It’s said that the first Thanksgiving featured shellfish and fish. American tastes and palates have changed over the years, making for a cornucopia of possibilities on the Thanksgiving table – from ham to tofu, mashed potatoes and gravy to collard greens.

Following the early tradition, Legal Sea Foods, a Massachusetts-based restaurant chain with several locations in Florida, will serve everything from stuffed turkey to stuffed lobster on Thanksgiving Day at its location in the Town Center at Boca Raton mall. Signature cocktails such as the Cranberry Bog Lemon Martini are on the beverage list to help kick off the holidays in style.

This year, the holidays will be most magical at Mizner Park, 327 Plaza Real in Boca Raton, with a spectacular Christmas tree lighting on Wednesday, November 25.

Come kick-off the Holiday season with Boca Raton’s annual tree lighting ceremony on “Thanksgiving Eve”. There will be the traditional holiday tree lighting, stage show, rides, games, snow and pictures with Santa for the kids, and young at heart.

Delray Beach to Conduct Water Line “System Burn”

By CRA News Service If you taste the city’s tap water in the coming days, you may notice an increased chlorine odor and taste.

You may also notice water flowing in streets and swales, localized lower water pressures and a slight discoloration of the tap water.

No need to worry, city officials say – it’s part of the annual water distribution line enhanced disinfection program which will run from Friday, Nov. 27 through Tuesday, Dec.8.

“To ensure that the City’s drinking water remains safe and compliant with all State and Federal water quality requirements, the City is required to implement preventive measures that are safe and approved by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection,” city water officials said in a news release.

The maintenance program will include a “system burn” which uses free chlorine as the primary disinfectant.

Church & Synagogue To Feed 4,000 People For the 32nd consecutive year, the Congregation B’nai Israel’s Kantor Family Center for Justice and Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Boca Raton, will partner to serve Thanksgiving dinner to more than 4,000 people in need on Tuesday, November 24.

This year the event will be held at the church, which is located at 200 N.E. 12th Street in east Boca Raton.

Congregation and church members, local restaurants and country clubs, and many other members of the community will join together to provide turkey with all the trimmings, pies, cakes, cookies and more to individuals and families who would otherwise go without during the holidays.

Attendees this year include individuals and families served by a number of local nonprofit organizations, including American Association of Caregiving Youth, Barton’s Boosters, Boca Love Outreach, Caridad Center, Farmworker Coordinating Council, Florence Fuller Development Center, In the Pines-South, Jewish Association for Residential Care, Jim & Jan Moran Boys and Girls Club, Let’s Grow Well Together, Pearl City Cats, Propel Youth Organization and The Lord’s Place.

Outreach is also being made to homeless people as well as people living in transitional housing.

Thanksgiving Food Giveaway Hits Milestone

Starting Monday, November 23 through Wednesday, November 25 1,800 turkeys and boxes of Thanksgiving dinner food will be distributed through the Boca Helping Hands Thanksgiving Brigade.

This year, the soup kitchen and food pantry reached a milestone –an increase in registrations of over 20% from 2014.

Pickups for the feast begin at 8 a.m. on Monday when cars line up and drive through the parking lot with their preregistered ticket. Recipients don’t even have to get out of their car to receive the holiday food which includes frozen turkeys as well as stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, canned vegetables, pie pilling and crust. The giveaway would not be possible without the community’s support for Boca Helping Hands.

Dozens of community groups and local businesses filled the boxes this year with the trimmings. Over 40 volunteers will be on hand to facilitate distribution including a large group of employees from Home Depot.

Thanksgiving dinner will also be served on Thursday during Boca Helping Hands’ normal lunch hours, where 150 guests will be treated to a traditional holiday meal prepared by chefs from the Boca Raton Resort & Club. Five

hundred holiday meals will also be distributed at a West Boca satellite location for those who have registered there.

Their commitment to those in the community who are in need is inspiring. Inaugural Great Chefs Tailgate Showcase On Wednesday evening I attended the Chefs Tailgate Showcase at the Via Mizner C.C. leading up to the Marmot Boca Raton Bowl 12/22/15 at FAU. There were many famous Chef ’s showcasing their best dishes from beef and pork sliders, tuna tartare and crabcakes, pork sliders, chocolate fondue desserts. A very large crowd mostly dressed in football jersey’s enjoyed a fun filled evening with FAU cheerleaders, food judging contest, games and raffles. I won a huge basket filled with candles with the raffle tickets I purchased. Thank you Jon and Bonnie Kaye once again.

A Week in Paradise This past week my travels took me down to Islamorada in the Florida Keys where I own a timeshare the second week of November each year. I was joined by friends from Pittsburgh, Pa. and Charlotte, No. Carolina and we enjoyed the most fabulous places in the Keys such as Cheeca Lodge in Islamorada, Little Palm Island and Key West, Key Largo and Tavernier. We dined on Shrimp steamed in Beer at the Castaways in Marathon and Lobster Rolls and PT109 specialty drinks at Little Palm Island. We enjoyed Old Tavernier Restaurant for dinner and Made to Order in Tavernier for a delicious breakfast. Dinners at Cafe Largo in Key Largo, Lazy Days in Islamorada, lunch at Overseas Kitchen and a comedy show in Key Largo called ” In Bed With The Butler” in Key Largo. I also did some great shopping in Key West as well. We enjoyed a pot luck dinner with 5 of our friends. We

also attended a Live Auction of drug dealers seized assets where one of my friends bought three very expensive pieces of jewelry, emeralds and ruby necklaces and bracelet as well as a signed Tarkay piece of art. What a fun week.

Every so often we get an inspirational sports movie. For this year we have “My All American,” based on the book “Courage Beyond the Game: The Freddie Steinmark Story.”

Freddie Steinmark was a Colorado kid who was considered too small to play football, but his strong will and determination was so fierce he became a star player on his Wheat Ridge High School team, and ultimately he was discovered by legendary University of Texas football coach Darrell Royal, who arranged for him to play for UT on a full scholarship.

Freddie Steinmark is played by stage actor Finn Wittrock, who like his character is inordinately handsome. Freddie was charis-

matic and attractive to the opposite sex, but he was also a devoutly religious Catholic, and when he met Linda Wheeler (Irish actress Sarah Bolger), he became devoted solely to her.

Coach Darrell Royal is played by veteran character actor Aaron Eckhart, who plays him as tough but compassionate.

Writer-director Angelo Pizzo has two previous successful inspirational sports movies: “Hoosiers” in 1986 and “Rudy’ in 1993.

Pizzo understands how to build excitement even when the outcome is already known.

Playing Freddie’s best friend James Street is actor Juston Street. Street replaced U Texas hotshot quarterback “Super Bill” Bradley (Donny Boaz) to lead Texas to a 1969 national championship and a victory over Notre Dame in the 1970 Cotton Bowl.

In addition to the inspiration of a little guy rising above his physical limitations, Freddie Steinmark faced an even greater challenge involving his health, and it was his courage and determination that gives “My All American” its real heart. If you are running short on inspiration, this little film should recharge you.

Design Matters

No Gold to Be Gleaned From Gossip When managers and supervisors are surveyed about the most pervasive problems they must deal with in the workplace, one that typically ranks near the top is gossip.

One definition for gossip is “idle talk or rumor, especially about the personal or private affairs of others.” So the focus of gossip in the workplace is not team-building.

The content of such gossip can range from job performance to workplace attire to “office politics” to speculating on behindthe-scenes relationships between colleagues.

In many cases, none of these discussions contribute to higher levels of productivity or camaraderie. But that does not diminish the temptation to share juicy secrets about other staff not present to hear what is being said about them.

“You will never guess what I just heard about…!” “Did you know that … and her husband are having problems?” “I was talking to Jim yesterday, and he told me that … is on the verge of being terminated.”

“Have you noticed Marvin has been acting strangely lately? Do you think he might be drinking again?” Have you heard examples of “information sharing” like these? How do you feel when you hear them?

People often talk about being overloaded with work, but some still find time to talk behind their coworkers’ backs. Perhaps speaking disparagingly about others helps to enhance their self-esteem. Or it might be the appeal of possessing “inside information” others do not have; if you fail to share it, how will they know you have it, right?

Rarely, if ever, does gossip have positive value. It diminishes the object of the conversation, and the end result may also diminish the reputation of the one offering negative comments. Here are some insights about gossip and the wayward tongue, along with warnings presented in the Bible: Gossip reflects a lack of good judgment.

Just because we know – or suspect – something about another person, that does not mean we have an obligation to express our suspicions to others. “The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value. The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of judgment” (Proverbs 10:20-21).

Gossip destroys trust. Sometimes a colleague will share information in private, trusting that information will be kept in secret. A decision to be indiscreet and pass that information to others can forever destroy a professional or personal relationship. “A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor, but a man of understanding holds his tongue. A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret”(Proverbs 11:12-13). “A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends” (Proverbs16:28).

Gossip can sometimes wound more deeply than a physical weapon. The old saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me,” is untrue. Often the damage resulting from harsh, uncaring, or even thoughtless comments can result is significant emotional, relational and even spiritual injury. “Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing” (Proverbs 12:18).

Gossip, even if unintended, can bring consequences greater than ever imagined.

Even if our motives are not to cause harm to someone, recklessly expressed words can prove to be surprisingly destructive.

“Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on first, and is itself set on fire by hell”(James 3:5-6).

“He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin” (Proverbs 13:3).

Does DESIGN MATTER In our Downtown?

This will be the final article of my threepart series on design regulations in the Downtown. How-ever, I am certain the discourse will continue. This pedagogical position is presented to broaden the stakeholder’s awareness of architectural and design issues pertaining to our Downtown.

Why should we adopt the iDG/Pattern Book?

It updates a 30 year old code. It provides valuable irrefutable urban planning criteria for suc-cessful development and place making. It is a framework for growth. It sets proven urban plan-ning strategies in motion. It builds momentum towards a unified vision. Designing a spatial pat-tern that follows proven successful case studies creates a better city. Most importantly, it pro-vides continuity that elevates credibility and reinforces the BRAND of a city. We all love this community. Boca Raton is a world class brand and it is safe to say we are all very proud of it.

The IDG/Pattern Book outlines a set of specific precedent driven planning/design tools to im-prove the quality of space, functionality and architectural articulation of the built realm. It is not just about tall buildings. The IDG/Pattern Book has hundreds of design criteria in addition to height. The original 4035 Ordinance has twelve pages of graphic criteria. Ask any Architect which code they would rather design to and you will get a full consensus on the IDG/Pattern Book over 4035.

Height is a volatile emotional topic with citizens. It should be. I encourage concerned stake-holders to understand that we are really comparing 140’ to 100’ in terms of what “additional height” is being allowed now in the new Interim Design Guidelines. Under the IDG, you can only achieve additional height for a small percentage of your overall mass. This creates varied roof lines and enhances the architectural appearance of the facades. It DOES NOT PROVIDE MORE DENSITY than allowed under 4035. If citizens do not like 100’ tall buildings then we have an entirely different debate. 100’ Buildings (120’ with roof features) ARE allowed in our Downtown. 140’ Buildings must be made thinner and have complex building forms and most importantly, greater street set backs to gain the extra height. 100’ buildings do not require this. This is a positive trade off. We are about to see how poor design under the 4035 code can im-pact our skyline when the infamous “Archstone-Palmetto Promenade is finished. Continuous unbroken massing, repetitive ordering, redundant forms, windows, etc. will fill the sky with banal uninteresting architecture. This building is

over 800’ long, averaging 85’ tall with very little roof breaks or varied architectural form:( Friends, poor design can result from any code and height restriction.

Reality Check - There are only limited parcels that can functionally be developed to large multi floor projects with heights over 100’, because they are limited by set backs/step back codes all defined in the new IDG/Pattern Book. In addition, multi story projects require vertical structured parking. This requires minimum buildable land geometries to be successful. The fact is, there are not enough assembled parcels in the downtown to do this. This is fundamentally the strongest reason to require variety. If we do not get it right now, our downtown will never realize its po-tential for successful urban planning and Place Making. Our Downtown is not perfect, but it has a lot of potential. Height is only one aspect.

What the future will tell - I can hear the “monkeys calling” - Tower 155, Camden, Boca Lofts, Via Mizner and the Royal Palm Place Master Plan are underway. These developments are criti-cally necessary to improve the Downtown. They will each have different influences on both the immediate and long term potential of the urban plan.

What now?

If all stakeholders can agree there is intellectual confusion regarding beauty. Who decides?. Design is subjective. Do we know it when we see it? We all want positive development. When it comes to Urban Planning and Architectural Design, the case studies should prevail. I believe we can all agree that the process of achieving design excellence and place making balanced with market driven pressure of development can be improved. It took us 10 years to create the 4035 Ordinance. Twenty-five years later, we are still a work-in-progress. It is therefore fair to believe we have a few years left to refine it. The Interim Guidelines AND Approval Process should be improved AND ratified so we can get to work on achieving our Downtown’s potential.

I would also encourage all stakeholders who are concerned to stay involved. This community is evolving. We all love it passionately. Stay informed. Improve your architectural knowledge. Ask questions of the experts. Offer your opinion during planning work shops and join the efforts to positively move our city along to achieve its ultimate potential. I am certain this process will be on-going and it is to be expected that we will all learn from it. DESIGN MATTERS Friends…….

Someone struggling with opiate addiction would easily be drawn to claims that an 8-ounce bottle of Elimidrol, which costs $75 per bottle, would let them “permanently overcome the withdrawal – the first time,” according to the suit.

The pitch, however, didn’t stop there.

Sunrise Nutraceuticals also conveyed its marketing message through consumer testimonials that recounted wrenching stories of addiction, relapse, and even arrest, according to the suit.

In one testimonial, an opiate-dependent customers says, “I was introduced to Elimidrol and it saved my life,” according to the lawsuit. “This is not an exaggeration, it SAVED my life.”

The customer also said that she “noticed within 30 minutes of the first dose that I was actually feeling pretty comfortable and I had a new sense of ‘clarity’ in me.”

Unless they are backed by “reliable scientific evidence, the FTS wants to stop Sunrise from making the alleged claims about the supplement.

In a statement, Sunrise said that it “admits no wrongdoing, but at this time is cooperating with the FTC and has chosen to discontinue its claims regarding symptoms of opiate withdrawal.”

A local dietary supplement marketer that claims it has the remedy for relieving anxious feelings, irritability and restlessness was slapped with a lawsuit on Tuesday for allegedly selling snake oil.

The Federal Trade Commission alleges that Sunrise Nutraceuticals LLC, sold dietary supplements it deceptively claimed could help people lose weight, build muscle or even cure people who are addicted to opiates, including prescription pain medications and illegal drugs such as heroin.

“People looking for a dietary supplement to improve their health have to wade through a swamp of misleading ads,” said Jessica Rich, the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection director. “Be skeptical of ads for supplements that claim to cure diseases, reverse the signs, or cause weight loss without diet or exercise.”

Sunrise, located at 2234 N. Federal Highway, claimed that its dietary supplement Elimidrol, a “proprietary blend” of herbs and other compounds, would help “alleviate the intense mental and physical symptoms associated with opiate withdrawal,” according to the suit. Furthermore, according to the company, the user will notice a different almost instantaneous.

“Elimidrol helps relieve intermittent anxiety, irritability, and restlessness,” according to the Web site. “Elimidrol Nighttime Formula complements the Daytime Formula by

Owls Narrowly Miss Upset at No. 8 Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- A blocked extra point attempt in overtime set up the Florida Atlantic University football team with a chance for one of the biggest upsets in the

program’s 15-year history. Fate, however, had other plans on Saturday as the Owls lost at the hands of the No. 8 Florida Gators 20-14.

“This was a game that we thought we had some matchup opportunities,” FAU Head Coach Charlie Partridge said. “We were able to execute the game plan and we were able to slow the game down in parts and have tempo plays in other parts. Overall, I am proud of the (team’s) effort, at the same time we are a building and working on a lot of things that we can learn from today.”

The FAU defense executed its game plan masterfully, forcing five three-and-outs and holding the Gators scoreless into the third quarter. Junior Trey Hendrickson recorded five tackles with two sacks, a quarterback hurry and a forced fumble. His fourthquarter, fumble-forcing hit marked the 16th sack of his career, putting him in a tie for first all-time in the FAU record books.

Senior Brandin Bryant also had a sack and a pair of TFLs, helping guide the unit to ten tackles for a loss and five sacks.

Owls Fall Victim to Hot Shooting Lipscomb, 79-65 OXFORD, Ohio - Lipscomb used a 51.9 shooting percent from the floor to defeat the Florida Atlantic University men’s basketball team 79-65 on Sunday. It was the Owls’ final game at the Men Against Breast Cancer Challenge.

The Owls (1-4) led 15-8 nine minutes into the game, when the Bison (3-4) closed the half on a 24-8 run to go into the locker room up 32-23.

Lipscomb’s accuracy continued in the second half, as the lead stretched to as many as 19. FAU scored 42 of their 65 points after intermission, but were unable to ever seri-

FAU Women's Basketball Upsets (RV) FGCU 62-55 FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team walked into one of the toughest venues in the nation in Alico Arena on Tuesday and came away with a 62-55 victory over (RV) Florida Gulf Coast. The FAU victory snaps a 25 game home winning streak by the Eagles (1-1), dating back to Dec. 29, 2013. It also broke a 23-game regular-season winning streak for FGCU, who is receiving votes in the Top-25 polls.

The Owls (2-0) saw top performances from Morgan Robinson, Kat Wright and Ali Gorrell with several players making clutch shots down the stretch. Robinson paved the way with 12 points while Wright contributed 11 and five rebounds. Gorrell tallied 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

The two squads combined for one first down over the next six drives to send FAU to its second overtime game of the year.

The Owls won the toss and elected to go on defense. After a pair of rushes to get inside the FAU 15, Harris dealt a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jake McGee to go up 20-14. On the extra-point attempt, Trey Hendrickson leapt and swatted the ball away, giving the Owls a chance on their possession.

Johnson found Jenson Stoshak for five yards on the first play and ran for eight more to get a first-and-goal at the nine.

Three-consecutive incomplete passes followed, including two just off the fingertips of FAU receivers to end the upset threat.

The Owls go on the road to finish the 2015 campaign with a Nov. 28 game at Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va. The game will be televised on the American Sports Network and carried on ESPN West Palm 106.3 and on fausports.com.

2016 US Open Cup qualifying: Boca Raton FC needs PKs to win battle of Florida with Uruguay Kendall

In a rematch of last year’s American Premier Soccer League final, Boca Raton FC advanced to the final round of 2016 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup qualifying over Uruguay Kendall on a windy Sunday.

The match was 1-1 after 90 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of overtime, with Boca Raton outpointing Uruguay Kendall 5-4 from the spot. Last season, Boca Raton won the APSL final 1-0.

An energetic first half gave Boca Raton plenty of goal scoring opportunities, but they couldn’t put the ball away. Against the run of play, Uruguay Kendall took the lead after left back Alex Joseph headed in a perfectly placed corner kick from midfielder Mathy Schmid in the 21st minute.

The scoreline remained the same into the halftime break. Uruguay Kendall playermanager Mauro Grignola substituted himself out of the game before the second

half, having accrued a yellow card and coming close to seeing red before halftime.

The second half kicked off with Boca Raton looking to get themselves back into the game. Uruguay Kendall tried to take advantage of Boca’s high backline, but they couldn’t produce anything from the counterattack.

In the 70th minute the ball fell perfectly to the feet of Boca forward Colby Burdette just outside the box. The 23-year-old former Florida International attacker put his laces through the ball to beat the keeper and tie the game for Boca.

Uruguay Kendall and Boca Raton continued to hunt for another goal, but neither side could break down the other’s defense.

Regulation concluded with the scoreline tied up at 1-1.

As two rather uneventful halves of overtime neared their conclusion, Boca Raton defender Scott Gordon, who most recently played with the NASL’s Fort Lauderdale Strikers, rose up to receive a curling free kick into the Uruguay Kendall box. The tall defender headed the ball into the top right corner, but he was called offside and the score remained unchanged, forcing a penalty kick shootout.

Boca Raton would win the shootout 5-4 and advance in the competition.

After the match Uruguay Kendall player-

manager Mauro Grignola said he felt confident going into penalties, but thought his side should have taken advantage of their good start to the game. He said his team’s reliance on the counter-attack wasn’t planned, but rather how the game played out.

Boca Raton FC manager Marcelo Castillo was happy with his side’s performance overall and is looking to surprise some opponents in Open Cup play.

Look for Boca Raton’s Colby Burdette to continue to shine, as the young attacker scored the equalizer and was a constant threat and menace to the Uruguay Kendall’s defense with and without the ball. Burdette felt his shot was in as soon as he struck it.

Boca Raton FC will continue their run to the tournament in the final round, which is scheduled for early April. The draw for Round 3 will be announced in early January.
