On Tuesday, October 22, Boca Raton Football Club was honored by Boca Raton Mayor, Scott Singer by receiving a proclamation for winning the 2019 United Premier Soccer League South Florida Championship this past summer.

Boca Raton FC players and staff joined president Douglas Heizer at the event as the club was honored in front of the entire City Council.

“When we began this journey six years ago we wanted to do what we have been doing with the newspaper [The Boca Raton Tribune], and that is to bring the community together,” said Heizer. “We have been averaging around 800 fans in our home games and that, to me, is a sign we are bringing the community together.”

Boca Raton FC has now opened up their very own Boca Raton FC Youth Academy, in which the club brings in children ages 3-8 to learn the basics of soccer, and grow their love for Story on Page 14 the game.

• STEAM Fest, which drew more than 800 attendees during its successful first year, is returning Nov. 16 and promises to be even better. • Art enthusiasts can expect to be moved this fall by three exhibits that cover a range of topics including sexual assault and its effect on victims. Community West Boca High Senior Plans College Fair for Local Students

Representative for up to 50 colleges and universities and technical schools will be in town to meet with high schoolers and their parents at a college fair next week.

The free event will be 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, October 24, at Village Academy, 400 SW. 12th Ave., Delray Beach.

College fair coordinator Kamryn Mills said the event is for high schoolers and their parents who are interested in a wide variety of post-graduation options, whether a four-year college, community college, technical school or the armed forces.

“A four-year school is not for every student, and it should not be, so we are offering as broad an experience as possible,” said Mills, a graduating senior at West Boca Raton Community High School.

The college fair is an offshoot of a larger fair, sponsored by the school district, which will be held at the South Florida Fairgrounds on Wednesday, October 23.

“There are many students in the south end of the county who cannot attend the college fair at the Fairgrounds for various reasons, including transportation or work schedule conflicts,” Mills said. “By holding this down here we are giving them another opportunity to meet with these representatives and get first-hand information about the college application process and financial aid.”

Students who attend Wednesday’s fair may also attend she added.

The fair is Mills’ senior year project for KOP Mentoring Network, of which she serves as president. Each year, seniors and juniors in the mentoring program are required to do a service project

as part of the requirements for successful completion.

“When a student completes KOP’s curriculum, you can bet your last dollar they will be prepared for life after high school because we make sure they have the tools necessary to survive in this global environment,” said Aida Smith, president of KOP Mentoring Network’s Parents Advisory Committee and one of Mills’ mentors.

While the college fair is targeting families of juniors and seniors, Mills said those of sophomores should attend too because the information can be helpful in the years ahead. “Besides, we think the earlier they start preparing for college the more prepared they will be when their time comes,” she said.

To get the most from the event, Mills recommends families make a plan, including which workshops they should attend and which campus tables to visit.

She also said looking at schools’ websites in advance is wise, so attendees can find some answers and formulate questions.

“Do your homework before coming,” Mills said. “Make sure you check out their website to see if they offer the major you want or the sports or activities you are looking for.”

There will be breakout sessions for College Readiness and several test prep, tutoring, financial and college planning businesses will also have representatives present to speak with families about their services.

Students are encouraged to bring several copies of their current transcripts and SAT/ACT test scores, if available.

dedicated to supporting the Downtown and Spanish River libraries. They raise money through memberships to the Friends organization, grants, and book sales at the bookstore in the Downtown Library.

“The Friends of the Boca Raton Public Library has been a supporter and advocate for outstanding library services for almost 30 years,” says Ellen Randolph, Manager of Library Services.

“The Friends’ wonderful bookstore and fundraising events have allowed the library to offer more Summer Reading programs to prevent loss of youth reading skills during the summer, as well as the Discover Studio, a maker space and computer lab for youth and adult technology, software and coding classes.

Cabaret Stars Take the Stage to Support People with Disabilities

The world of cabaret was wellrepresented on October 11, 2019, when one shining star after another took the stage at the Wick Theatre in Boca Raton, FL, to showcase their talent and their love of the annual Boating and Beach Bash for People with Disabilities, now in its 12th year.

In tribute to the Bash’s cofounder Jay Van Vechten and in celebration of his 75th birthday, a roster of legendary performers put on a star studded show, called “Cocktails, Canapes & Cabaret,” filled with song, dance and heart-felt sentiment. Bash Administrative Director and Van Vechten’s wife Lowell Van Vechten presented him with a humorous poem about aging, and a rendition of “Young At Heart,” sung by the event’s headliner, Kellye Cash.

Cash, a former Miss America and niece of icon Johnny Cash, kicked off the evening with her version of “Ring of Fire,” written by June Carter. Ms. Cash flew in from Nashville to host the evening. Cash was joined on stage by Sean McGibbon, Aaron Kemper, Rob Russell, Mason Pace, Meg Frost, the Hot Shoe Shuffle Boys, Michael Walters, and Lois Sage, who traveled from Orlando to salute her old friend from their cabaret days in New York City in the 1970s and 80s .

The evening was directed by Johnathon Van Dyke, who is also directed Hot Shoe Shuffle, which runs through Nov. 10, 2019, at The Wick Theatre.

Broadway World columnist Stephen Sorokoff reviewed the fundraiser and wrote, “The evening reminded me of the days when you had those great variety shows during the Golden Years of television. Honoring 3 Community Servants

Our community has benefited from the service of Donald “Don” Bruce Cooper, Robert “Bob” Gregor Currie and Albert Green who died recently and left an indelible mark on Delray Beach.

Each contributed to a different aspect of public service, whether for their architectural skills, public service or servant leadership. Nonetheless, their impact was immeasurable.

Mr. Cooper, who served as city manager from November 2014 until to Dec. 30, 2016, died in Port St. Lucie, where he previously served as assistant city manager and city manager for 19 years.

When Delray Beach commissioners hired him, the city needed someone to right the train.

Although his tenure was short, Mr. Cooper, 69, brought stability to a city that was reeling, moved it forward and left it in very good shape.

Former coworkers said he inspired faith and trust in many who worked in City Hall. As one of his closest colleagues told me, “he just gave off

a certain confidence and wisdom that you knew everything was going to be alright.”

With more than 30 years of experience in local government, Mr. Cooper was a visionary, sincere and principled leader who was ahead of his time.

He is credited with steering Port St. Lucie from a community of 56,000 on septic tanks to almost tripling - 165,000 residents - in size, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in the country.

His 10-year, $145 million plan, which extended water and sewer service throughout the city, was the county’s largest water and sewer expansion.

Like Mr. Cooper, Mr. Currie was respected for his contributions to improving their community.

While Mr. Currie’s career accomplishments are considerable - the revitalization of the Old School Square Cultural Arts Complex, the South County Administrative Complex and South County Civic Center for Palm Beach County, Temple Sinai, the Ocean

Avenue Bridge and Sundy House Restaurant among them - his personal ones will also leave a lasting impression on the community.

His public service speaks of his commitment to people and bettering lives, especially his many years on the board of the Delray Beach Public Library, Old School Square Foundation, Pineapple Grove Main Street Board and several city and county advisory boards.

Professionally, Mr. Currie’s legacy and vision will stand for generations in the projects he and his business partners in the firm of Currie Sowards Aguila Architects, accomplished. Mr. Currie and his firm served to mentor and train many aspiring young architects with an active intern program with Virginia Tech.

Unlike Mr. Cooper and Mr. Currie, Mr. Green’s only reason for going to City Hall was to pay his utility bill. However, his service to the community was tantamount to theirs.

It was his behind-the-scenes role that befitted Mr. Green’s nature of working on behalf of the sick. His ministry

is often away from the spectacle often attached to elected officials basking in attention.

Mr. Green, 94, served his country honorably in the armed forces and retired as a merchant mariner. He was not a member of a house of worship. However, he served the sick more than many deacons and members of the clergy. There were days when he would get in his truck and he would ride around the city to visit the sick, his neighbor and cousin Athalone Brailford said.

Just a few weeks before his passing, I visited Mr. Green with a friend, and he was so happy to receive one of his favorite brands of cigar.

He was indeed the model of servant leadership. He didn’t need to be in spotlight, but his caring spirit and wisdom were essential to more community initiatives than I can count.

Their lives of service offer an excellent road map for how to get there.

My condolences to their loved ones and to a community enriched by their lives but made poorer by their loss.

10 Years From Now, Who Will Remmember?

One of the most profound clichés I have ever heard is so simple it is easy to ignore: “Fame is fleeting.” Think about it: A musician records a hit tune that soars to the top of the sales charts, but hit song No. 2 never comes. Years later the “one-hit wonder” no longer appears in a “Who’s Who” listing of famous people; instead, you might find him relegated to “Who’s He?”

Candidates run for a major political offices, even for President. When they lose the election, however, they are soon forgotten. Some of us will forget they ever sought public office.

Patrick Morley, speaker and author of The Man in the Mirrorand other thoughtful books, referred to this some time back when he wrote, “This morning I was trying to remember the name of the enormously successful businessman and iconic philanthropist in Tampa (Florida,

U.S.A.) who once owned the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (professional football team).

His name was constantly in the news. He was far more well-known that you or I will ever be, yet 10 years after the last time I heard his name, I can’t remember it. And there are many more just like him.” The path from fame to obscurity can be very short.

Morley then posed the question, “Who will remember your name 10 years after you die?” When we consider all of the people who once achieved fame and acclaim, whose names for a time were on everyone’s lips, only to fade into the forgotten, isn’t that an important question to ask ourselves?

The fundamental issue is not how to achieve long-lasting notoriety. Rather, it is what our priorities should be so that when our time in this life has ended, the

impact of our lives – the legacy we have established – will continue through the lives of other people. We can pursue wealth, set lofty business goals, strive for recognition and status, or pursue any number of lifetime dreams. But if we have not made a meaningful, positive impact in the lives of the people we encounter from day to day, ultimately nothing else will matter.

Consider the life of Jesus Christ.

His formal ministry on earth lasted only three years. During that span He touched thousands of lives, but most significantly Jesus invested many hours in teaching and discipling a handful of men from a variety of backgrounds. These were not the MBAs, top executives or elite citizens of their day.

Pitfalls Of The ‘Peter Principle’

This month’s speaker at the Tiger Bay Club luncheon at City Fish Market was CEO Paul Stebbins, who spoke about the trillion dollar federal budget deficit and how to fix it. He kept the crowd very interested and then took questions from the group. An excellent speaker.

Years ago, the business world became captivated by a book called The Peter Principle, authored by Dr. Laurence J. Peter. The book focused on an common pitfall of leadership advancement: If we continually promote high performers, we will eventually advance them to a level of incompetence. In other words, success in one level of endeavor does not guarantee success in levels of greater authority and responsibility.

Even though Dr. Peter’s book was first published more than 40 years ago, this “Peter Principle” continues being practiced today, often to the detriment of individuals and the organizations that employ them. According to the Harvard Business Review, researchers Alan Benson and Kelly Shue tested this theory by studying how well sales people performed when promoted to sales management positions.

Benson and Shue discovered high-performing salespeople often were not good managers, affirming the Peter Principle. When offered a promotion, some people accept it for the additional compensation that comes with it. Or they take the new position out of pride, desiring status or authority that goes with it, rather than to humbly and honestly consider their skill sets, evaluating whether the proposed role would be the best fit for them. Failing to perceive they could become “square pegs” struggling to fit into “round holes” can lead to unnecessary failure.

For instance, people whose persuasive and people skills enable them to excel in sales might lack the necessary leadership or administrative skills to effectively handle the challenges of managing and directing others. Such a promotion could prove to be more of a penalty than a reward.

The consequences of moving high performers into very different new roles are significant on several levels. For

a company, ideally every individual would be situated in positions where they can both excel and thrive. The adage about a chain being only as strong as its weakest link applies to people being promoted beyond their capabilities.

In sports, not all stellar athletes are suited to experience equal success as managers, coaches or sports executives.

Similarly, promoting someone to a role that requires different skills and gifts can prove frustrating for everyone. Some individuals may find great joy and fulfillment in their current position, but become miserable in another role for which they are ill-suited. At the same time, those assigned to report to them could become stifled in their own productivity.

The Bible offers insight into how to avoid this dilemma:

Seek wisdom to discern how best to utilize people’s talents and abilities.

Effective leaders learn to understand the people who work for them – their skills, interests, goals and limitations. Advancement decisions should be made with all of those factors in mind.”Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds” (Proverbs 27:23).

Do not let pride or ambition misdirect your career. Without question, excellence should be recognized and rewarded. “Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men” (Proverbs 22:29). However, ambition and the desire for recognition can lead to poor career decisions. Proverbs 29:23 teaches,”A man’s pride will bring him low, but a humble spirit will obtain honor.”

If you desire honor for your work, concentrate on what you do best and ask your company to reward your successes appropriately.

The Soroptimist Chapter for Boca Raton/Deerfield Beach held their Women of Distinction Breakfast on Wednesday morning. The Women of Distinction Award honors women in their communities who are working to improve the lives of women and girls through professional, business or voluntary activities.

The ideal candidate is a woman who has worked in extraordinary ways to benefit women and girls, demonstrates exemplary character and leadership, and serves as a role model for other women. Women may nominate themselves or another woman they feel is deserving of this honor.

Christine Lynn served as Honorary Chair and presented Helen Babione with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Talon Leadership Awards

On Thursday evening, FAU held their Talon Leadership Awards dinner at the Boca Raton Resort. The award is named for the talon on an owl which is vital to its survival. It provides stability, strength and endurance.

Together with the FAU Alumni Association and the Student Government Homecoming Committee, the evening pays tribute to the truly outstanding “Owls” who are making an impact in our community.

Talon Awards were presented in four categories: the Alumni Talon Award, the President’s Talon Award, the Student Talon Award and the Faculty Talon Award. This year the Student Talon award was given to Mariana Ribeiro, the Faulty Talon Award, to Myeongsub Kim. Cecilia Peters was recognized with the Alumni Talon and Christine Lynn was presented with the President’s Talon Award.

The Christine E Lynn College of Nursing celebrated its 40th anniversary growing from an RN-BSN degree program with approximately 10 students, to more than 1,100 students in 4-degree

programs on three FAU campuses.

Dr Ken Jeong mesmerized the audience of 1500 at the 16th Annual Go Pink Luncheon at the Boca Raton Resort and Club on Friday. Funds raised during the luncheon were ear marked to support services benefitting patients of the Eugene M and Christine E Lynn Cancer Institute.

Ken is best recognized for his role as the Asian mobster “Mr Chow” in The Hangover film franchise. But, way before his film debut, Ken had earned his medical degree at the University of North Carolina. He completed his Internal Medicine residency in New Orleans and worked at Kaiser Permanente for seven years. He had always wanted to do comedy but his parents felt it was not a noble profession. So, while he practiced medicine during the day, he would do gigs after work at the Improv and Laugh Factory. Eventually he was discovered and cast in his most famous role. He has also stared in Knocked Up, Role Models and Crazy Rich Asians.

All of this may not have happened if it wasn’t for the strength, support and encouragement of Ken’s wife Tran. When he was offered the role of Mr Chow, Tran had just been diagnosed with an aggressive form of stage 3 triple negative breast cancer. Their twin girls were only one year old. Despite the odds against them, Tran encouraged him to take the role which ultimately was the highest grossing R rated comedy at that time, second only to Hangover 2.

Ken told an incredible story from then until now, 11 years later. He would fly or drive home each time Tran underwent a chemo treatment. He described how he balanced the roles of husband, father and actor. Dr. Ken Jeong emphasized the importance for both men and women to be their own health care advocates.

Palm Beach County’s New Sidewalk Project

There have been a great deal of complaints centered around the lack of sidewalks in local neighborhood streets.

It is a matter of safety, when a lot of cars fail to stop for pedestrians and the county officials need to do something to remedy the situation.

Local resident, Rachel Glinka told WPTV her concerns with the current sidewalk situation. She emphasizes the need for more sidewalks near schools such as Del Prado Elementary in West

Boca. The children need a safe and easy way to cross over into their neighborhoods when walking to and from school.

As a result, county officials responded with an approved $1.5 million project to build and repair Palm Beach County sidewalks.

According to WPTV, this week county officials announced they will take on a sidewalk project in order to build more neighborhood sidewalks and fund the repair of damaged sidewalks.

We Bid a Sad Farewell to our Benevolent Friend, ‘Mady’ Savarick

Once you’ve been around Boca Raton for a while, you get to know the true philanthropists. And if you’re lucky, you’ll become friends with them.

My wife and I were very fortunate to have known several. We loved Henrietta, Countess de Hoernle, though we never met her husband who passed away before we arrived. We remember visiting her, waiting for her in the lobby of an apartment complex, watching as she came flying out of the elevator on her motorized cart. She was a hoot, and a real joy to know. She contributed millions in a lifetime of 104 years.

Florence “Flossy” Keesely was another. Her generosity tended to support the arts. She produced variety shows, joined the Boca Raton Rotary Club where she was the oldest member and enjoyed hosting events at her penthouse in Highland Beach. Proudly, my wife and I wrote the memoir on her life, and we still get comments about the lovely lady who passed away just before her 102nd birthday.

Just recently, we learned that Madelyn Savarick, another woman who supported the arts – the Boca Raton Symphonia, the Boca Ballet, the annual Madrigal Dinner at Florida Atlantic University and many other cultural events – had passed away.

The patron of the arts, theatre and music died Sept. 12, a few days shy of her 97th birthday. Her beloved dog, Mozart, was at her side.

We didn’t know that much about Madelyn. She didn’t talk a lot about herself. Her obituary said she was raised in New York, “the youngest of four children [who] immersed herself in all things musical from the time she was a child.

She was a most remarkable woman, naturally endowed with beauty, elegance and grace. Resilient, inimitable, flame-thrower to life, creator of dreams, executor of excellence, passionate soul and truly one in a billion. Her contributions in cultural

enhancement in Boca Raton and South Florida were extraordinary, impactful and earnestly undertaken. No board, committee or organization was complete without Madelyn’s tireless energy, intelligence, and guiding wisdom.”

We’d be the first to swear that all this was true.

Like many of us in the media, we ran into Mady frequently. A few years ago, when we enjoyed the Boca Raton Historical Society’s trolley ride around Boca and Delray, we found ourselves on the vehicle that she sponsored. We’d see her now and then at various cultural events, though lately health problems slowed her somewhat.

It was something of a coincidence that when we discovered that Mady had passed away, we were at the Dubliner Restaurant in Mizner Park. From where we were sitting, we could clearly see the Michael and Madelyn Savarick Tower in front of the Count de Hoernle Amphitheater. In front of that tower stands Flossy’s Fountain, a landmark crafted

by Boca Raton artist Yaacov Heller that show’s a young Flossy reaching for the stars – something she did throughout life as she succeeded at many endeavors.

Adjacent to the amphitheater stage are statues of the Count and Countess de Hoernle, also crafted by Heller and placed there around the time of the Countess’s 100th birthday – an event that was celebrated with great glee in all corners of the city.

A celebration of Madelyn’s life was held Saturday, Oct. 12 at St. Gregory’s Church – the same spot where we said farewell to the countess and to our wonderful friend from the Boca Raton News, Norman “Skip” Sheffield.

In lieu of flowers, Mady has asked that contributions be made to Symphony of the Americas, Fort Lauderdale; the Florida Atlantic University Music Department or the Boca Raton Historical Society and Museum.

William Latson was principal at Spanish River High School in Boca Raton since 2011, put many were outraged after they heard his comment on the Holocaust.

Back in July, Latson was removed and replaced from his principal position after it came out that he did not acknowledge the Holocaust as a real event that took place.

Latson credited his statement to being “politically neutral” but the statement clearly offended many who were

affected by it.

Following the outrage, the Palm Beach County Schools Superintendent Donald Fennoy, recommended Latson’s contract not be renewed.

The public then called for Latson to either resign or face firing by the school district and the decision had not been announced, until now.

According to Sun Sentinel, William Latson will be officially terminated on October 30th, following an investigation carried out by the school district.

sports Boca Raton FC Honored By Boca Raton City Council

On Tuesday, October 22, Boca Raton Football Club was honored by Boca Raton Mayor, Scott Singer by receiving a proclamation for winning the 2019 United Premier Soccer League South Florida Championship this past summer.

Boca Raton FC players and staff joined president Douglas Heizer at the event as the club was honored in front of the entire City Council.

“When we began this journey six years ago we wanted to do what we have been doing with the newspaper [The Boca Raton Tribune], and that is to bring the community together,” said Heizer.

“We have been averaging around 800

fans in our home games and that, to me, is a sign we are bringing the community together.”

Boca Raton FC has now opened up their very own Boca Raton FC Youth Academy, in which the club brings in children ages 3-8 to learn the basics of soccer, and grow their love for the game in the process.

“We are so excited to be able to share this moment with the city in which we proudly display on our chest,” added Heizer. “Everything we do with Boca Raton FC we aim to put the great city of Boca Raton in a positive light, and winning the 2019 UPSL South Florida Championship was one of those moments.”

Sandmann Nets SSC Offensive Player of the Week

Levin Sandmann garnered the Sunshine State Conference's (SSC) Offensive Player of the Week Award after tallying five points in Lynn men's soccer's two triumphs over No. 21 Palm Beach Atlantic and Tampa, as announced on Monday afternoon.

A 6-2 senior from Heidelburg, Germany, Sandmann notched his second assist of the season on the Blue and White's third goal in a 3-1 win over PBA. He then followed that with a two-goal outing in a 3-2 home victory versus Tampa for a fivepoint week.

The Palm Beach Atlantic University men's soccer team defeated SSC opponent Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University 6-1 tonight. The offensive flurry from the No. 22 ranked Sailfish moved PBA to 9-2-2 on the season and 3-2-2 in SSC play. With the win, the Sailfish are now 7-0 at home on the season.

PBA entered tonight's game in the middle of the crowded SSC standings and in need of a home victory over the EmbryRiddle Eagles. After back and forth play in the first 25 minutes of the first half, the Eagles were the side that got on the board first. Alex O'Brien scored on a left-footed free-kick from just outside the box in the 26th minute to put the Eagles up 1-0. From that point on, the Sailfish were able to take hold of the game.

It took seven minutes for PBA to equalize as Mo Redjeb found a loose ball in the box from a Gian Scalise free-kick and his right-footed shot beat Eagles keeper Jack Crichton. Three minutes before the break, Scalise once again played a dangerous cross into the box and Thomas Spear rose over the defense to head home PBA's second goal. The 'Fish went to the half up 2-1, controlling 56 percent of the possession, and outshooting the Eagles 7-4.

Key bench pieces impressed in their second half time with attackers Drew Fulmer, Luis Quintero, and Giancarlo Triulzi each looking dangerous and creating chances in the second half, but they were unable to beat Jack Crichton who had six saves on the night. The cherry on top of a great performance came in the 89th minute when Nicolas Boucher climbed above defenders to head home a corner from Blake Barribeau for his first goal of the season and end the game 6-1.

PBA outshot the Eagles 27-5 and 12-1 on target in the game while controlling 60 percent of the possession. The win moves the 'Fish up to third place in the SSC standings with three games remaining on the season. PBA is back in action on Oct. 26 when they host (6-5-2) Eckerd College at the Rinker Athletic Campus.
