• The Boca Raton Tribune, in partnership with the City of Boca Raton’s Office of Economic Development, recently launched a corporate appreciation luncheon that aims to recognize Boca based companies for their valuable contributions to the city’s corporate community.

• For the second straight year, the Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team will lift the lid on their season at FAU Stadium, home of the football Owls, as they kick off the 2017 campaign on August 18 versus Florida at 7 p.m.

• Faith-based foster care organization Place of Hope is set to expand their housing as six acres of land is being cleared on Boca Rio Road. Those six acres of land will partly be used to house teenagers in their foster care program once they reach 18 years of age. Once a child turns 18 and leaves foster care, they are suddenly on their own. With the construction of the building it will allow those teens to continue to have a place they can call home.

• The Boca Raton Airport will install a permanent noise monitor in a residential community just west of Military Trail.

• Six acres are being prepared for the first Place of Hope building with eight, two-bedroom apartments that will house foster care teens who have aged out of the system at 18 and have no place else to go.

• Boca West Community Charitable Foundation, which provides grants and volunteers to 25 community non-profit programs that serve local children, has provided funds, instructors, and volunteers for a variety of 2017 summer programs.

• Modernizing Medicine’s landing of $231 million in venture capital in May was among the top 10 deals in the country in the second quarter, according to the MoneyTree Report released this week. The Boca Raton company’s venture capital raise swelled Florida’s numbers for the quarter to $291.1 million invested in 16 deals. That compares with $85.7 million in 25 deals in the second quarter last year, according to the report.

• Penny Morey was installed as Rotary Club Downtown Boca installs first woman president

• A Palm Beach County network of education institutions under the umbrella of Florida Atlantic University was recognized

by Google for its innovative approach to teaching through technology, the first in the state to earn the honor.

• After over two decades as the Traffic Engineer for Palm Beach County, George Webb is retiring. MPO chair, Susan Haynie, vice-chair, Hal Valeche, and MPO executive director, Nick Uhren joined with the entire MPO governing board in thanking George for his impact on our transportation infrastructure over his tenure and wished him well in his future endeavors.

• Shoppers, diners, and visitors to Downtown Boca’s Mizner Park now have the opportunity to brush up on their short game at the new Putt’n on the Plaza. The 20×20, four holes putting green was installed this month and has accompanying putters and balls available to use for free. • Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing is playing a key role in ensuring that South Florida has an adequate workforce of Nurse practitioners. The College has received a $1.4 million grant from the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, for an evidence-based curriculum to prepare NPs to deliver relevant, culturally competent, and skilled primary care services for underserved populations in Broward County.

Community FAU Celebrates 2017 Summer Commencement

Florida Atlantic University conferred more than 1,800 degrees during three commencement ceremonies in the Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium, FAU Student Union, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. The new graduates joined more than 155,330 alumni who have graduated from FAU since the University opened its doors in 1964.

“Congratulations to our graduates on all of their hard work and accomplishments,” said FAU President John Kelly. “I join their family and friends in celebrating this major milestone, and wish them nothing but success in the future.”

Summer commencement highlighted the accomplishments of outstanding graduates, including:

● Olumide Adenmosun, 31, graduated with a master’s degree in business administration during the 5 p.m. ceremony. Adenmosun recently received a $150,000 grant to continue his research on bat populations in Africa, and whether molecules from these bats can be adapted as possible vaccines or therapeutics against the Ebola and Zika viruses.

He’s also been working with a team of scientists in Africa to develop a rapiddiagnostic kit that can diagnose Ebola faster. Outside of his work in Africa, Adenmosun is an adjunct instructor in microbiology at FAU, and is working on a novel sperm characterization study that

was recently published as a commentary in the Archives of Clinical Microbiology. Following his graduation from FAU, Adenmosun will continue his research and work to establish his biotech start-up company, Eurekan Biotech, in Africa. He plans to pursue a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences at FAU in the near future.

● Josh Puchferran, 23, received his master’s degree in accounting during the 5 p.m. ceremony. For the last four years, Puchferran has served as FAU’s mascot, Owlsley, and will wear Owlsley’s feet one last time as he walks across the stage to receive his degree. As the FAU mascot, Puchferran has attended hundreds of student, athletic, administrative and off-campus events. He also served in Campus Crusade for Christ, Student Government, Beta Alpha Psi and is a member of the FAU Accounting Scholars Program, where he completed his undergraduate accounting degree in three years and continued into the master’s program.

He has accepted a job at Grant Thornton, one of the world’s largest accounting firms.

Some interesting statistics regarding the summer graduating class include the fact that 29 of the graduates are over the age of 50, and three are over the age of 60. The youngest graduate is 18, and the oldest graduate is 73. The graduates represent 35 countries.

Multiple Boca Raton Schools Improve to A Rating

Students may have received their final grades months ago, but the grades for the schools themselves have just come in.

After every school year, district schools are ranked on a scale from “A” to “F.” The schools are graded on a maximum of 11 components which include English, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

High school are also evaluated on their graduation rate, which factors students who graduate in the typical four years, while middle schools are evaluated on acceleration.

Four schools in West Boca Raton saw top improvements in their grades compared to 2016. All of them raised their “B” rankings to an “A.” In total, 12 schools in Palm Beach County were able to make that jump.

Grades are recorded by adding points from the various components and dividing them by the total number of points that can be earned. Schools with a 62 percent or higher receive an “A,” while 54 to 61 percent is consid-

ered to be the “B” range.

The improvements of the West Boca Schools come after three of those four schools actually took a dip compared to their 2015 grade. Olympic Heights Community High School had held an “A” ranking for two consecutive years before falling last year.

The same drop also happened for Boca Raton Community Middle School and Sandpiper Shores Elementary in 2016 as well, however for both of those schools, 2016 was actually the first time they had received a grade other than an “A” since 2001.

It snapped a run of 14 years with the highest grade. Now back at the top of the grading scale, they will both look to continue the top tier success they had through 2015.

The fourth of the four schools which moved up was Hammock Pointe Elementary. They were able to secure their first “A” ranking since 2014.

Now as the 2017-2018 school year is set to begin on Monday, Aug. 14, these schools will be attempting their hold onto their grades for a second consecutive year.

Palm Beach International Airport Voted One of Best Airports by Travel and Leisure Magazine

Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) has been named 9th best domestic airport in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure magazine. The criteria measured airports based on check-in and security, access, restaurants and bars, shopping, and design.

PBI has a longstanding history in South Florida dating back to 1936 when it was known as Morrison Field. Named after Grace K. Morrison, a pioneer in early planning and organizing of the field. Not only was Morrison the first woman pilot to fly solo in Palm Beach County, she was also president of the Palm Beach County Airport Association, playing a pivotal role in the development of PBI.

The real impact of Morrison Field occurred during the outbreak of World II. In 1940, the U.S. Army converted Morrison Field for military purposes, Following Pearl Harbor, Morrison Field oversaw 6,200 military planes and 45,000 fliers.

After the war, the airport operated as a civilian airport and the name was changed to Palm Beach International

Airport for tourism and business growth. PBI operated as a civilian airport until September 1951, during the Korean War, when the Air Force reactivated Morrison Air Force Base. Civilians and the passenger terminal were relocated to the south side of the field.

All military usage of the airport ended in 1959.

By 1988, the 600,000 square foot terminal was dedicated. The airport has 28 aircraft gates with room for 24 additional gates in the possible future. PBI has almost 200 daily non-stop arrivals and departures to more than 25 destinations in the U.S, Canada and the Caribbean on its 13 airlines.

Travel and Leisure is not the first source to award Palm Beach International Airport. In 2013 PBI received the Airport with the Most the Unique Services award

by Airport Revenue News due to their putting green, kids’ play area, and rotating art exhibit . In 2015 PBI received the Conde Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Award for being the fifth Best Domestic Airport, Conde also named PBI sixth Best Airport in the U.S. the following year. PBI was among the Top 5 Medium Sized Airports by 2016 Travelers Choice Award from TripAdvisor. In 2016, PBI was named Best TSA Checkpoint in the U.S. by J.D. Power and among the Top 5 Highest Ranked Airports for Ease and Accessible Parking and Getting to the Terminal by Airport Revenue News.

Reseach Park to Celebrate 2017 Awards

The Research Park at Florida Atlantic University recently named the recipients of its third annual Research Park Annual Awards. The awards celebration will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 4 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at The Addison, 2 East Camino Real, Boca Raton. Tickets cost $100 per person.

Schmidt College of Science, a visiting investigator at The Scripps Research Institute-Florida, and a faculty member at the International Max Planck Research School. Dawson-Scully has created two biotech companies. One was incubated in the Technology Business Incubator® and the other at FAU Tech Runway®, bringing new innovation and

possibilities to market.

Distinguished Entrepreneur: Robert S. Flippo has worked in both start-up environments as well as Fortune 500 companies over the last 16 years.

Flippo has experience in forming highperformance teams and has held executive roles at high-tech companies such as Motorola, Boca Research, and Emergin, Inc. Flippo has grown Research Parkbased MobileHelp from a one person venture to a sustainable company of almost 200 employees that was recently acquired by private equity company, Abry Partners.

Distinguished Leader: Jeff Atwater was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000 and then to the Florida Senate in 2002 where he went on to serve as president. Boca Demands Tougher Texting and Driving Laws

Boca Raton has had enough of texting and driving.

New crash reports list distracted driving rose to 10 percent in Florida in 2016 while injuries associated with texting rose 45 percent in Palm Beach County. State Representative Emily Slosberg, D-Delray Beach has announced she has been working with Boca Raton City Councilman Robert Weinroth to introduce a resolution - a resolution which urges state legislature to make texting while driving a primary offense.

“If you have driven and looked to your right or left, you may have noticed the driver beside you is not looking around him or her, but is looking down presumably texting,” Councilman Weinroth said. “It’s those two seconds being inattentive that can cause accidents. Statistically, distracted driving causes more accidents in South Florida.”

Councilman Weinroth and the Boca Raton City Council have voted unanimously in favor of establishing textingwhile-driving as a primary offense, but there is still more to be done before such a law exists.

“My role is to bring the attention to the public,” he said. “As a municipality we have no law-enacting powers that would prohibit texting-while-driving in the city of Boca Raton.”

A new law such as ‘texting-whiledriving as primary offense’ can only be instituted by the state to bring the law into fruition. This is where State Rep. Slosberg steps in and brings the matter to the attention of the legislature in Tallahassee.

Texting-while-driving is one issue regarding distracted drivers but what about the others? Councilman Weinroth expressed his familiarity with such a question.

“What I have heard many times are ‘what about the people putting on lipstick?’ ‘What about the people who are shaving in their car?’” he said.

Drivers engaging in distracting innumerable activities seems almost inevitable, however the councilman argues what the actual underlying issue is.

“It’s certainly a valid point and I would like to see that subject debated and discussed in Tallahassee,” he said. “However, texting-while-driving is a certainly a key part right now because so many people have phones. Many people are spending too much time staring down at their phones, when they should be looking out their windshield to see what’s going on around them.”

Florida is one of only four states which do not make texting-whiledriving a primary offense. It is a secondary offense, meaning no penalty unless the driver is pulled over for a different reason such as speeding.

“The police officer can be next to a vehicle, watch the person actually texting and be powerless unless there is a primary offense,” stated Weinroth.

Florida is one of only four states to instill texting-while-driving as a secondary offense. Weinroth has remained puzzled

by Florida’s offense standards.

“I honestly don’t know, I think we have a strong lobby of people who really feel that they would like to have as little state interference prohibiting their actions,” he said.

Rep. Emily Slosberg follows in her father’s footsteps campaigning for tougher texting-while-driving laws. Her father, former Rep. Irving Slosberg, was also a democratic member of the Florida House of Representatives of the same district.

Slosberg Sr. has sponsored a similar legislation during his tenure but to no avail.

“He and his daughter Emily have spent a great deal of time through charitable foundations such as the Doris Saves Foundation,” Weinroth explained.

Since 2004, the Doris Saves Foundation has been a non-profit public service organization dedicated to traffic safety and drivers education. The foundation’s name is derived from Irving’s late daughter Doris Slosberg, who was tragically killed in a West Boca car crash in 1996. Five teenagers were killed in the serious accident while Emily Slosberg, Doris’ twin sister, survived with serious injuries. Both were 14 years old at the time.

Since the traumatic event, Emily and Irving Slosberg have made it their mission to change current traffic laws while serving as state representatives. One major step is making texting-while-driving a primary offense.

During the last legislative session, Slosberg co-sponsored a similar bill, but it never made it out of committee.

“The community should write to their legislators or to the chair of the committee that will be hearing such laws,” councilman Weinroth advises. “It is a good idea to let them know of the community’s concern and let the matter be brought out of committee and be debated to hear what solutions the legislature can do.”

The councilman shared a final comment, “Every day eleven teenagers die as result of texting-while-driving.” A very grim statistic with a potential of growing if tougher laws are not in place.

Schools are In, Do Your Part to Make a Difference This Year

In a few days, school bells will begin ringing again as students head back to the classrooms.

I cannot think of any more important duty to our future than the work of our great educators and proactive parents. As we turn our darling periwinkles over to those educators, let us remember that what you get out of school depends on how much you are willing to put into it.

I hear the constant cry from educators that too many parents – sometimes for legitimate reasons – are not involved enough. Schools are not meant to be education factories where we insert children into kindergarten and then wait for an educated teenager to emerge. It takes some work on our part too.

To get the most out of this

process called education, our children need to be in school every day. And as parents, guardians and mentors our involvement is just as crucial. Yes, we need to do our part by helping with homework and projects, attend open houses and back-to-school nights to meet their teachers, or just showing an interest in what your student is studying.

But this year, I urge you to go a bit further. When they get home, ask the usual question, “What did you do today?” which actually means, “What did you learn?” And how can I forget, ask them what I call my battery of questions, “Did you talk with anyone today?” “What did you talk about?”

“Were you kind to them?” “Did you show them respect?” and “Did you treat them the way that you like to be

treated?”

Education is a long process and requires a tremendous amount of work and commitment from parents as well as teachers.

I attended the annual education breakfast in Delray Beach on Thursday and I must say, that City gets it when it comes to education. The Chamber of Commerce needs to be commended on their ability to make educators feel welcome. The principals or representatives from each of the public and a few private schools attended the breakfast.

They also brought some of their new teachers and introduced them to the community.

Each teacher received a bouquet of flowers, a backpack of goodies, gift certificates to spas and other goodies that will help make their school year

a blast. The principals received an extra treat – money.

It is no surprise the City was named an All-America City for a third time and the only city in Florida to receive this honor three times.

I challenge every parent, grandparent, church member, athletic coach, civic group and member of the clergy to make the non-classroom piece of the education puzzle a top priority this year.

Without that support in place, we will fail our children.

I also urge all the students to buckle down and work hard in all your classes. Above all, respect your teachers and make your parents and all of us who are rooting for you proud. Make the best of everything this year.

Wisdom is More Than Accumulated Information A wise person is a well-informed individual. Yet, the mere accumulation of information does not necessarily constitute wisdom. You may go to school for many years and learn all kinds of important and legitimate facts; you may devour important books and benefit from what you find in them. But wisdom is acquired differently and it entails other factors!

Throughout my years I’ve encountered several persons who had an impressive academic baggage, but by observing their life and the decisions they often made, it was most obvious that they were devoid of true wisdom!

By the same token, I’ve also met quite a few people who had no academic credentials; some had not even finished elementary school. Nevertheless, in their dealings, in their demeanor, and by the results of many of their transactions, they demonstrated what wisdom entails.

Ultimately, wisdom is the preferred path one should follow, the most important possession for one to acquire.

It is reached through careful thinking, followed by sound choices led by that process. It entails gains as well as losses, additions but also subtractions!

One cannot accept whatever is said or

written without first analyzing those ideas through a pre-established grid. Wisdom is reached by intelligent comparisons and contrasts; it demands solid discernment between a variety of options; it can never be attained without a prior understanding of the potential consequences of every action taken!

Wisdom needs not to be limited to a small segment of the human race. It is available to any person regardless of age, anyone who seeks it diligently throughout life, and is eager to incorporate it in all the decision-making processes, and in every aspect of one’s daily living, in things

great or small!

The Author of Life is also the Giver of Wisdom which He does not deny to anyone who diligently seeks it from Him. Like most products we utilize, it must be followed in accordance with the prescriptions offered, lest it ceases from being wisdom. It enables its practitioner to view life more realistically and to arrive at conclusions never before imagined.

Among all credentials anyone could ever display, wisdom is the most essential and absolutely necessary!

Students Receive First Doctor’s White Coats At Ceremony

The 64 members of the incoming class of 2017 in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University each received their first doctor’s white coat today during the White Coat Ceremony.

The seventh annual White Coat Ceremony formally marked their entry into the profession of medicine and took place in the Barry and Florence Friedberg Lifelong Learning Auditorium on the Boca Raton campus.

“The power of the symbolic white coat resides in how you conduct yourself while wearing it as a medical student and later as a physician,” said Phillip Boiselle, M.D., dean of FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, as he delivered his remarks to the entering class of 2017. “It is a constant reminder of your professional and ethical obligations as a physician. Always remember that providing health care is a sacred trust and your white coat symbolizes your commitment to upholding that trust.”

Stuart L. Markowitz, M.D., senior associate dean for student affairs and admissions in FAU’s Charles E. College of Medicine, served as the master of ceremonies and FAU President John Kelly provided remarks prior to the white coat cloaking.

“You have chosen a very noble profession and we wish you every success in your education, your training and your life as a physician,” said Markowitz. “This is the first step on a journey that will be exciting, frustrating, but will be the most remarkable journey you will encounter. On behalf of all us in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine and at Florida Atlantic University we welcome you on this journey.”

The event program included a keynote delivered by Darin P. Trelka, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of integrated medical science and director of anatomical programs in FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, and the 2017 recipient of FAU’s highest award, the “Distinguished Teacher of the Year.” Trelka is board-certified in anatomic and forensic pathology and has been a medical examiner and coroner in Virginia, Ohio and Florida. He is the former deputy chief

and interim chief medical examiner of Broward County.

The students were cloaked with their white coats by Markowitz and Jennifer W. Caceres, M.D., assistant dean for student affairs in FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. Each student was pinned with a “Humanism in Medicine” lapel pin by a member of the class of 2020 during the ceremony. At the conclusion of the event, the students recited in unison an “oath” they collectively wrote, which will serve as a code of conduct they are committed to following throughout their education and as physicians after medical school.

The 64 members of the incoming class of 2017 were selected among 3,667 applicants who desired to attend FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. Class members range in age from 19 to 30. The class of 2017 is the most diverse in the school's history and will contribute to the College’s mission to enhance diversity among the physician workforce. Fifteen percent of the class received their bachelor’s degree or master’s degree from FAU. Although most of the class members majored in traditional pre-med subjects, the class also is made up of students who have non-science majors. Approximately 87 percent of the incoming class are Florida residents.

Most of the major colleges in Florida are represented including students from FAU, the University of Florida, Florida State University, University of Central Florida, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, and Florida Gulf Coast University.

Other students in the class attended undergraduate institutions such as Boston University, Cornell University, Dartmouth University, Duke University, Emory University, Georgetown University, The University of Hawaii, and the University of Southern California among others.

Each student’s white coat was sponsored by members of the community as well as local businesses during White Coats-4-Care, a special fundraising event co-chaired by Bonnie and Jon Kaye, Kaye Communications, Inc. The event also provided vital medical school scholarships.

Following the White Coat Ceremony, students and guests enjoyed a special reception generously underwritten by Michael T.B. Dennis, M.D., member of FAU’s Board of Trustees and chair of the advisory board of FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine.

The White Coat Ceremony was founded in 1993 by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. The Foundation concluded that the beginning of a student’s journey into medicine is the best time to influence standards of professionalism, humanistic values and behavior.

Rotary Club of Downtown Boca Raton Names First Woman President

Longtime Rotary Club of Downtown Boca Raton member Penny Morey was named the club’s new president on June 23 and now has already completed her first month in the position.

After a long history with the Rotary Club, Morey joined the Downtown Boca Raton chapter in 2014. She became the fifth president of the club at their installation dinner at Broken Sound Club, taking over for Lewis Fogel, who was installed last June.

“I liked the fact this club focuses on health and wellness,” she said. “That helped me make a decision that this was the right club for me.”

When the first Rotary Club was founded in 1905, women were not allowed to join and it was not until 1987 that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that no one can be turned away due to their gender. That same year, Sylvia Whitlock became the first woman to be named president when she was installed at the Rotary Club of Duarte.

Moving forward to 2017, Morey is now the first woman president at the Rotary Club of Downtown Boca Raton, which is now entering its sixth year since it was founded.

“I see this as another opportu-

nity to say women are fully capable of leading,” she said. “I’m very proud that they selected me early on to be the president elect nominee and to move into the president’s chair. It was a huge honor.”

Her first month has gone well as she has had multiple people approach her to tell her how much they like some of the format changes she has made, but not everything can always go smoothly for the leader of a group of people.

“I had hoped to shorten our board meetings – I failed miserably at shortening the first one,” she said followed by a laugh. “But we’ve got such a wonderful group.”

The Rotary Club is meant to give an opportunity for business professionals to make friends and connections, while using their skills to make their community a better place. Morey has been a standout on both ends.

She started her professional career in New York as the director of the New York State Assembly Intern Program. Among her many achievements, she created the Human Capital Services consulting practice for CBIZ in 2001 and was later recognized by CBIZ for her accomplishments. Six years later, Morey went on to found RemarkAble HR, which provides “solutions for human resource, employment matters and executive recruiting.”

Just like her successes in her professional career, Morey has been very active in the community as she was a nominee for the Junior League Woman Volunteer of the Year Award in 2004. She also served as the board president of the Boca Raton Children’s Museum for 13 years. Her work within the community made her the perfect fit for the position at the Rotary Club.

Now under her direction, the club will look forward to multiple causes such as Alzheimer’s prevention and the Josh the Otter program, which teaches children how to swim at a young age. She also hopes to get the youth more involved with the Rotary Club by interacting with the middle and high school programs.

Sarah Pearson Promoted in The Boca Chamber

The Boca Chamber has recently promoted Sarah Pearson to be the new Executive Vice President of the Boca Chamber.

Pearson, who was previously working in a chamber in Oregon, has been with the Boca Chamber for seven years where she served as Senior Vice President of External Relations. She currently holds over 10 years of experience in the industry.

“Sarah’s talent and contributions have been invaluable to our organization.” said Troy McLellan, President and CEO of the Boca Chamber. “Her innovative thinking and vision will continue to enhance the strategic direction and growth of our Chamber.”

Pearson credits much of her success to McLellan, who she sees as her mentor.

“I would like to thank my mentor, Troy McLellan for taking me under his wing, and for investing his time on me and on my development.”

The Boca Chamber is in charge

of making sure that business thrives in Boca Raton.

Pearson says that the chamber achieves this by “looking at workforce development, education in the area, and crime rate” amongst many other things “to make sure everything looks good and makes businesses want to come and stay in Boca.”

The mission of the Boca Chamber is “To promote and sustain economic prosperity in Boca Raton and South Palm Beach County” something which the chamber has done pretty well.

“Everything that we do is to help ensure that business is prosperous in Boca Raton.” Pearson added, “this year we would like to work more closely with city officials to ensure that all of our businesses’ needs are met in order to promote economic growth in Boca.”

Pearson is very dedicated to making the Boca Chamber one of the greatest chambers. “I love what I do, it’s in my blood” she said. Her first plan of action is to get a five-star rating in their new rigorous accreditation process. This long process is done by the U.S Chamber, and it involves pulling back up to 10 years of records as well as looking at the one, five, and 10 year strategic plans amongst many other things. “We will not settle for anything under five stars this year” declared Pearson.

Pearson looks to become CEO of a chamber in the far future, and stated that she would like to stay in Florida because “we are a very pro business minded state thanks to our great Governor.”

By Robert Weinroth • The City of Boca Raton continues to demonstrate its commitment to the FAU Charles E Schmidt College of Medicine and its incoming classes of medical students. For the 7th year, White Coats-4-Care, a fundraising reception hosted

by Bonnie and Jon Kaye, has raised scholarship funds for the incoming students.

Residents sponsor one or more “white coats” (more on that in a moment) with their generous donations. This year, as in years past, the reception was held the night before the coats were presented to the class members.

• On Friday, August 4, 2017 the 64 members of the FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine Class of 2021 received their “White Coats.” The White Coat Ceremony was founded in 1993 by the Arnold P. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University celebrated its 11th White Coat Ceremony as it officially welcomed the members of the incoming class. • Visitors to Mizner Park can hit a couple of mini-golf holes while they wait for a table at a restaurant or take a break from shopping.

Last fall, the city set funded 10-foot-by-10foot patch of putting-green near Mizner Park’s central fountain at the request of Mayor Susan Haynie.

• Last weekend the Boca Ballet Theatre presented a mixed repertory dance concert at the Countess de Hoernle Theatre at Spanish River High. The production included David Parson’s contemporary comedic classic, “The Envelope,” George Balanchine’s “La Source,” featuring Miami City Ballet’s Jennifer Lauren and Kleber Rebello, a world premier by Boca Raton native, Sanjay Saverimuttu and Dan Guin’s “Graduation Ball.” The talent of the dancers was amazing!

• Teaching your child a foreign language has never been easier. Foreign language education is accessible to all children in Boca Raton thanks to the Boca Raton Public Library. The Library is offering online foreign-language learning to children of library patrons through KidSpeak for Libraries. They are partnering with RB Digital to bring this fantastic, free, educational addition to our city. Children will learn skills like alphabet and word recognition, understanding simple sentences, addition and subtraction, how to tell time, number recognition (matching numbers

to written words) and correct pronunciation.

• Boca Raton Regional Hospital has again been cited as a top-ranked regional hospital in U.S. News & World Report’s 2017–2018 annual review of its Best Hospitals. The Hospital is currently ranked 16th out of approximately 300 hospitals in Florida and 6th in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metro area, making it the highest ranked hospital in Palm Beach County.

• Mayor Haynie and I attended TransPlex 2017 hosted by the Florida Department of Transportation to discuss transportation for the future of Florida. The mayor gave welcoming remarks to the 400+ transportation specialists in attendance and recognized the students who submitted their posters promoting the synergy between community planning and transportation alternatives. TransPlex (Transportation Planning Exchange), and Focus on Community: Best Practices in Transportation, are forums for transportation professionals and project development professionals to learn and exchange ideas about transportation planning, as well as engaging communities and people in the making of transportation plans and projects.

• It’s been a full week of events presented by the Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce. Boca Chamber Festival Days has become a staple for highlighting the many non-profits making lives better for residents in our community.

On Friday night it was BCFD Happy Hour at Juniors for the benefit of the Faulk Center for Counseling sponsored by Eliot Popper and Morgan Stanley. On Monday the Boca Museum of Art was the venue for a Midsummer Party Exhibition Preview. .On Tuesday the fun continued at the Pavilion Grille as Unique Gifts and Premiums partnered with Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services for Feed Your Funny bone, a night of comedy with hors d’oeuvres and drinks - combining philanthropy and fun while supporting the services provided by JFS.

‘You Are Now Entering The Mission Field’

When you hear the term “mission field,” what comes to mind? Typically we think of a distant land, with people living in an alien culture, speaking an unfamiliar, even strange language. Have you ever thought about the mission field that exists right outside your office or cubicle, or the people you will encounter during your next sales call?

Years ago, a friend of mine, Ken Johnson, established a ministry to business owners and top executives. One of his goals was to help each member recognize that they were missionaries – in their office buildings, manufacturing plants, and sales territories. In fact, Ken had little signs printed that he gave to everyone affiliated with his Christian Network Teams. The signs read, “You are now entering the mission field.”

Nowhere does the Bible specify that the only people who qualify as “missionaries” are those under the direct authority of a church or mission agency, or that their income must be generated solely through charitable contributions.

For that reason, a business or professional person working with individuals who do not claim to be followers of Jesus Christ can rightly consider himself or herself a missionary.

When Jesus commissioned His followers near the end of His time on earth, He directed them to “therefore go and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20). Nowhere in this command did He indicate this must be done only within an institutional, religious

context.

Similarly, in Acts 1:8 Jesus declares where serving others in His name should take place: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” In saying this, Jesus was describing the entirety of the known world at that time. He was instructing His followers, “Tell people about Me wherever you go, whether it is in the office next door, your neighborhood, across the city, or in a totally different part of the world.”

Thinking about this, it indicates that regardless of the source of our incomes, we are charged to serve as representatives of Jesus Christ – what CBMC calls “marketplace ambassadors” – wherever we go. We do not need a specific call to leave our professions or move to another part of the world. As someone has wisely said, God wants us to get involved with other people where we are – because we obviously cannot serve God where we are not.

Over its nearly 90 years of existence, CBMC has seen many thousands of men and women come to know Jesus Christ in a life-changing way, and many of them have grown to become faithful and zealous ambassadors for Him not only in their own cities and nations, but also wherever they travel and conduct business. A literal translation of Matthew 28:19 is, “As you are going, make disciples (followers) of Jesus.” Wherever we go – wherever opportunities God provides take us – we are to serve Him and reach out to others with His Good News.

sports Florida Launch Clinch Playoff Berth

For the first time in franchise history, the Florida Launch have secured a playoff berth in a thrilling 18-17 road victory against the Boston Cannons.

After losing to the Cannons in their season opener, the Launch evened the series in a redemption match at Harvard Stadium. With a six-goal scoring run to kick off the game, the Launch took off, going on three separate goal-scoring runs in the first half to give them a solid eight goal lead.

“I thought we did a great job moving the ball, really playing team ball, being unselfish,” said coach Tom Mariano at halftime.

In an effort to stifle the Launch’s offensive onslaught, the Cannons retaliated with an 11 goal run to start the second, evening the score at 16 late in

the fourth quarter.

But, the Launch’s playoff push could not be silenced, as scoring efforts from Kieran McArdle (4G, 4A) and Nick Mariano (3G) quickly ended the Cannons only lead of the game.

McArdle’s eight point performance earned him CocaCola Player of the Game honors.

“We needed some plays. He made some plays,” said coach Mariano following the game.

Goalie Austin Kaut, who has been a force in the cage for the Launch all season, tallied 15 saves on 31 shots.

Kaut’s regular season performance has earned him the third spot on the all-time single season record list with 256 saves.

He finishes the regular season as the league leader in saves.

“We know we just have to focus on us,” said McArdle, “I think we’re in a good spot right now. I think we can clean up a few things, but overall, we’re rolling, and we’re going into the playoffs.”

Move To Boca Raton Creates a Tennis Star

Lauren Davis left everything she knew in her hometown of Gates Mills, Ohio to pursue her professional tennis dreams in Boca Raton when she was only 16-years-old.

Tennis had been a passion of hers from a young age and she was determined to break into the spotlight.

“I played my first tournament when I was nine years old," Davis recalled. "I made it to the finals and ended up losing. I still have a picture from that day. I have a big frown on my face and a few tears rolling down my face. I was, and am, super competitive.”

Years later, something happened that would go on to change her career forever. While playing in the 2008 US Open Junior Championship, tennis coach John Evert, brother of retired tennis star Chris Evert, invited her to train on a trial period at the Evert Tennis Academy in Boca Raton.

After only a few days of training, Davis knew it was the place for her and just months later, Boca Raton became her new home. It was not an easy transition, but after she settled in, she never looked back.

Her success only continued from there. Many tennis players only dream of making a grand slam, but Davis has been able to play in all four.

“Playing in the grand slams is what every tennis player dreams of, so I’m honored and proud to have done that,” she said. “Now the next step is getting deep in the slams.”

Not to say it has all been easy for Davis. Standing at 5-feet-2 inches, she is well below the average height of the top 10 ranked players in the Women’s Tennis Association. No. 1 ranked Karolina Pliskova is 6-foot-1, while the shortest of the group is 5-foot-6 Simona Halep. Height can often provide an advantage through increased power and bounce when serving the ball, however Davis does not think of that as an obstacle.

“I wouldn’t say that I’m an underdog,” she said. “What I lack in height I make up for with my speed and movement around the court. I use my legs to generate the power and my competitive spirit to win.”

Her ultimate goal is to be one of those top 10 ranked players, but there was a time last year when Davis actually thought about walking away from it all.

She decided to hang up the rackets during a six-week sabbatical as she spent some time back in Ohio.

“I took a step away from tennis and tried to see things from a different perspective,” she said. “I was so tired and burnt out at the time that I felt I could take a year or two off. But as weeks went by, I started missing playing more and more. The time away made me realize and appreciate just how much I enjoy playing tennis and how blessed I am to be able to play the sport that I love every single day.”

Davis’ rank had fallen to No. 122, the lowest it had been since her second professional year in 2012, but she aggressively returned to the sport, improving to No. 61 by the end of December. Her success has only continued from there by defeating Ana Konjuh for her first WTA title in January at the ASB Classic.

“God couldn't have chosen a better first WTA tournament for me to have won,” she said. “Winning the ASB classic in Auckland was an incredible feeling. I fell in love with the city, the people and the tournament. It was an amazing feeling being able to win my first title at one of my favorite tournaments.”

Now with that first title under her belt, currently No. 34 ranked Davis is ready to push for the coveted top 10 spot with an interesting strategy - having fun.

“Enjoying myself on and off the court has been the biggest contributor to my success. When you’re happy off the court, you’ll perform well on the court.”

Boca Raton FC unveils ambitious Boca Raton Library Promotion Set fan-friendly and for Upcoming FAU Football Game By: Michael Demyan community-oriented future plans

Boca Raton FC has developed over the past few years a reputation for providing affordable community-based entertainment. We’re extremely proud of our successes and are now actively taking steps to further grow our club and create a soccer environment that benefits everybody involved with the game in our community.

Our first match of the fall will be on August 23 against Lynn University at Lynn. We’re pleased to be able to play a game in Boca Raton to be close to our fans. This also will help strengthen our ties with local Universities as we work to develop educational opportunities for our players and foster learning experiences for players from all over the world.

The 2017 NPSL and APSL Spring Season proved to be a learning experience for everyone involved with our club. We experienced growing pains and won’t repeat some of the same errors we made during this period. We also pledge to be closer with the community and work to find a more permanent and accessible place to play our games.

For the APSL Fall Season we will be fielding a team of mostly young, local player players. We’re not focused on results for this period though we will build a competitive and entertaining roster for our fans.

In 2018, we plan to have at least 12 home games in Boca Raton or Delray Beach and we need community buy-in to make this as successful as possible. We will also be engaging in more community-oriented charitable activities going forward including around the holidays.

We are also looking to develop a training center in partner with local investors which will not only be for our club but to serve as a home for competitions and to host clubs from abroad who come to south Florida for training. This will be a training facility not owned by our club but one which will be a partner in and

use for our first team and academy. It will serve as a home for our club.

Next year, we will field teams in the same leagues we did in 2017. However, we are in active conversations with the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA) and are also open to having similar discussions with the North American Soccer League (NASL) and United Soccer League (USL) in the future. Our commitment is to bring the higher level of professional soccer to this community without compromising our values or our brand.

We will not jump to a professional league until we feel we have a proper structure in our club from youth development on up to our first team. We will not play in a pro league in 2018. We need to do our homework before getting there and we need more investment partnerships and more local support before making the leap. We are pleased in our trajectory as club through three years and have confidence in our long-term plan.

We need support of the local community and local businesses, if we are to move forward towards playing in a professional league. In the upcoming months we will be building collaborations and bridges to further our footprint and the viability of our club going forward.

We will spend the coming months fostering existing relationship in the community and developing new ones as well. We are actively involved in seeking real investment partners who can help sustain our growth while maintaining the reputation and family feel of the club we have built in the last three years.
