Boca Raton, FL – The City of Boca Raton was recently awarded with five SUNsational Awards by the Florida Festivals & Events Association (FFEA) during their 29th annual convention and tradeshow. The program recognizes members’ innovation, individuality and creative collaboration.

Nominations were accepted in ten categories, including Printed Materials; Outdoor Advertisement; PR / Media Campaign; Photo; Promotional Item; T-shirt; Broadcast Media; Multimedia Marketing. Events and Programming. Each category included three budget levels. Over 200 events submitted their materials for consideration.

The City of Boca Raton was awarded First Place for Promotional Video (FAU Community Celebration) and Promotional Item (Summer in the City branded beach towel; Second Place for Promotional Video (Food Truck Fridays); and Third Place for Photo Opp Area (MLK

Event) and Photo.

“We strive to provide our community with the highest quality events and programs. As such, our team is thrilled to receive this statewide recognition,” said Richard Mahler, City of Boca Raton Community Events Coordinator.

This year in particular was incredibly rewarding as we showcased the innovation and resilience of festival and event organizers throughout the state during this unprecedented time.”

Boca Raton, FL – Florida Atlantic University made considerable gains in the U.S. News & World Report list of “Top Public Schools,” moving up to No. 112 from No. 131 in this year’s ranking of the nation’s best universities. U.S. News & World Report also ranked FAU at No. 209 for “Top National Schools,” up from No. 262 last year.

“The Florida Atlantic community has worked incredibly hard to reach new levels of excellence,” said FAU President Stacy Volnick. “It’s an honor to see our efforts reflected in this year’s rankings as we continue to innovate and expand while ensuring success for all.”

“While God was testing him, Abraham still trusted in God and his promises, and so he offered up his son Isaac and was ready to slay him on the altar of sacrifice; yes, to slay even Isaac, through whom God had promised to give Abraham a whole nation of descendants!”

Hebrews 11:17-18 (TLB)

Have you ever felt your hope die?

You can know hope is dying when you hear yourself say the word “never”: “I’ll never get married. I’ll never get that job. I’ll never have children.”

You’re certainly not alone. One of the greatest heroes of faith in the Bible, Abraham, felt like that.

Romans 4:18 tells us, “Abraham, when hope was dead within him, went on hoping in faith, believing that he would become ‘the father of many nations.’ He relied on the word of God

which definitely referred to ‘your descendants’” (Phillips).

What do you do when hope dies and you’re ready to give up? You rely on what God has promised. Where do you turn when everything in you feels like doubting God? You turn to God’s Word.

To become a person of faith, you need God’s Word in you.

Notice the Bible says that Abraham “relied on God’s Word.” Nothing is more reliable than God’s Word!

Even when Abraham faced his biggest test—God asking him to sacrifice his son—he relied on God’s promises.

“While God was testing him, Abraham still trusted in God and his promises, and so he offered up his son Isaac and was ready to slay him on the altar of sacrifice; yes, to slay even Isaac, through whom God had prom -

ised to give Abraham a whole nation of descendants!” (Hebrews 11:17-18 TLB).

After Abraham and Sarah waited years for a child, God gave them Isaac. And then God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac.

Abraham didn’t panic. The Bible shows three ways Abraham responded in faith:

Abraham believed God could raise his son from the dead (Hebrews 11:19).

Abraham told his servant, “We’ll be back,” not, “I’ll be back” as he and Isaac headed up the hill for the sacrifice (Genesis 22:5).

When Isaac asked Abraham, “Where is the lamb we will sacrifice?”

Abraham answered, “The Lord will provide” (Genesis 22:8).

Abraham believed the promises

FAITH

of God. He knew God would either spare his son or resurrect him.

When all hope seems lost, put your hope in God. “And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love” (Romans 5:5 NLT).

Talk It Over

Have you ever felt like all your hope was gone? How did you respond—with panic or with faith?

How can you start or continue to cultivate a faith like Abraham’s?

Which of God’s promises has been helpful to you when you have lost hope? How can you help someone else grab hold of that promise?

The post When All Hope Is Lost, Believe God’s Promises appeared first on Pastor Rick’s Daily Hope.

Recently I re-read the classic book, Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson, M.D. First published in 1998, this allegory still resonates for many of us today. With the pace of change in our world seeming to escalate daily – perhaps more in the marketplace than anywhere else – this little book continues to live up to its subtitle, “An A-Mazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life.”

If you are not familiar with the story, it is about two mice (Sniff and Scurry) and little people (Hem and Haw) who travel through a maze in search of cheese. When they discover an abundant supply, they return to the spot day after day, enjoying their cheese. Then one day the cheese has disappeared.

After a bit of confusion, puzzled about what happened to the cheese that had always been there, the mice begin searching for cheese elsewhere in the maze. In time, their efforts are rewarded as they locate more and

better cheese than before. The little people, however, initially refuse to accept that their accustomed cheese is gone forever. They return to the spot day after day, only to find – no cheese.

Ultimately Hem, driven by hunger, decides to search elsewhere in the maze for cheese. However, his counterpart, Haw, is stubborn. He refuses to acknowledge the cheese will no longer be found in its accustomed place. “Who moved my Cheese?!” he repeatedly asks.

Many thousands of business and professional people can relate to the “cheese” story. Their quest might not be for actual cheese – their “cheese” might be more customers, a more satisfying career, more money, a happier life, or something else. Returning to the same place in search of this “cheese” when the supply has been exhausted is futile. The quest of “cheese” must follow a different path.

In my own career, the “cheese” has

moved numerous times. Often the change has been disconcerting. I was comfortable doing the work I had been doing. It was familiar, I felt in control, and the prospect of making a major change was unsettling to say the least.

The Scriptures do not speak about cheese specifically, but they do address the challenges when someone or something seems to have moved our “cheese.” Here are just a few examples of how faith can help when our “cheese” has moved:

There is a time for everything. Few things remain the same in life. Change, whether we like it or not, is unavoidable, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven…a time to plant and a time to uproot…a time to tear down and a time to build…” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8).

God determines when the ‘cheese’ should move. When change becomes necessary, we can trust God already knows what

is best for us. “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, please to give you hope and a future’” (Jeremiah 29:11).

When our ‘cheese’ moves, it is usually for a good reason. God has an overarching purpose, and He will fit the changes we face in life into His overall plan. “Commit to the Lord whatever you do and your plans will succeed. The Lord works out everything for His own ends…” (Proverbs 16:3-4). “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps” (Proverbs 16:9).

Boca schools get $100,000 to choose what they use

Robotic brain upgrades. Science kits. Video microscopes. It’s a new world of learning to prepare kids for work in the digital age.

And Boca Chamber’s Golden Bell Education Foundation stepped in as it does every year to present more than $100,000 in grants to Boca public schools.

Principals and teachers gathered at the Chamber’s monthly breakfast to accept the grants, most in the $1,000 to $2,000 range, to spend on specifics, from forensic kits at Eagles Landing Middle to access to a database for West Boca High.

“For the last 30 years we’ve created an environment for innovation and success (to ensure) strong public education,” said longtime Golden Bell chairman Chuck Stout.

Frank Barbieri, Palm Beach County school board president, whose district oversees Boca public schools, introduced deputy superintendent and chief of schools Edward Tierney in person, and Superintendent Mark J. Burke via video. They praised the district for reading readiness growth and educators for a 98.2 % graduation rate.

“Thanks for making a difference,” said

Boca Raton Elementary fourth graders Lucca Machado and Mikah Reed, before Chamber vice president Sarah Pearson handed out the grants.

Golden Bell also oversees the Chamber’s Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) for middle and high school students. “For 15 years, 20 kids a year learn how to start a business,” noted Boca Chamber president and CEO Troy McLellan.

Stout urged breakfast attendees to donate to Golden Bell via texts on their phone, and donations were tracked on a Jumbotron. Longtime Golden Bell supporters and the breakfast sponsor BlueGreen Vacations executive Susan Saturday and her husband Jim pledged $2,000 in matching funds, and donations were over the top from attendees.

The Chamber’s Season 5 Truist Battle of the Bands from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Saturday Sept. 30 at BRiC (Boca Raton Innovation Campus) is a fundraiser for Golden Bell. Tickets are $65 general admission/VIP $90 at this link or call the Chamber at 561395-4433. https://www.tickettailor.com/ events/bocachamber/956230?entityDomainId=15&secure=True

West Boca Medical Center names insider new CEO

West Boca Medical Center has been CEO-less over the summer. Parent company Tenet Healthcare just named Group COO Jerad Hanlonto head up the 195bed hospital on State Road 7.

Hanlon was the chief operating officer of Tenet’s Palm Beach Health Network and St. Mary’s Medical Center in

West Palm Beach. He starts his new position on Oct. 9 as CEO of the hospital at 21644 State Road 7, three affiliated medical facilities in West Boca, and one in Coconut Creek.

Hanlon will succeed George Rizzuto, who was named CEO at West Boca Medical in August 2019. The former Philadelphia hospital executive has been listed on

LinkedIn since July as a healthcare and executive consultant based in Ambler, Pa. He returned to the Philadelphia area for family reasons, according to a Tenet hospital spokesperson.

Hanlon is familiar with West Boca and recognizes the important role the medical center has serving its greater community, according to a Tenet state -

Feeding South Florida Addresses Food Insecurity in South Florida with $100K Equitable Food Access Grant from Starbucks

bucks. Feeding South Florida will be using this grant to engage local communities in identifying and addressing racial disparities and supporting interventions to overcome common barriers to food access. The grant will also help Feeding South Florida continue to make data-informed decisions and adjust food access programming based on neighbor feedback. Feeding South Florida also received the Equitable Food Access Grant from Starbucks in 2021 and 2022.

Pembroke Park, FL – Feeding South Florida® – the leading hunger-relief organization serving Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties – announced today that it will continue to address food insecurity in South Florida with a $100K Equitable Food Access Grant from Star -

During the first two years of the grant, Feeding South Florida completed 202 neighbor surveys at 15 partner agency locations throughout its service area to better understand the foundational causes of hunger. Feeding South Florida successfully supported 26 distribution events through its mobile pantries and distributed 182,192 meals equating to 218,629 pounds of food, 79% of which was F2E (foods to encourage). The nonprofit organization served 16,397 individuals including 5,466 children.

“We are incredibly grateful to Starbucks

for providing us with the Equitable Food Access Grant to help us put food on the table for South Florida families who need it the most,” said Paco Vélez, president and CEO of Feeding South Florida. “This third grant will continue to help us increase access to nutritious food among households in communities experiencing high food insecurity rates. This comes at a critical time when the demand for food has increased significantly due to inflation with rising food costs, fuel prices, ballooning insurance premiums and increased housing costs.”

“For the last 50 years and still today, Starbucks believes it is our role and responsibility to help strengthen the communities we serve, and in partnership with Feeding America, we are tackling hunger with a focus on equity,” said Michael Kobori, vice president of Sustainability & Social Impact at Starbucks. “The equitable food access grants are a unique opportunity to combine efforts with our Community Stores across the country – which are designed to support historically

under-resourced communities through local partnerships and economic opportunity – to increase access to nutritious food for people that need it most. We are proud to have reached this momentous milestone and of the impact these food banks are making.”

Feeding South Florida, a partner of the Feeding America® network, is one of 16 food banks to receive this third grant from Starbucks. Since 2021, the food bank has received It’s $300,000 in Equitable Food Access Grants. Feeding South Florida was identified based on the location of a Starbucks Community Store which is committed to economic development and opportunity in historically under-resourced communities. Since 2016, Starbucks has helped to provide more than 50 million meals* to people facing hunger through its FoodShare program in partnership with Feeding America.

Those who are aloof usually aren’t very warm and friendly fellows. They’re reserved and emotionally cold and detached persons who keep to themselves, drink espresso and read philosophy.

In Middle English, aloof was originally a nautical term; the loof (now spelled luff) is the windward side of a ship.

Sly sailors wanting to avoid a hazard on the leeward side would give the order, “A loof!” From this command we get the idea of steering clear of something (or someone). In modern usage the word took on a negative connotation: an aloof person is often considered cold or snobby.

Now, can you think of a more remote, unfriendly, uninviting place than that distant mostly vacant flatland over our heads, that desolate, often overheated surface atop most buildings called roofs? Commercial roofs are like airports with runways, but no airplanes.

Sure, there are a few roof gardens, but it takes a lot of money and work to turn the typical roof into a place where you’d want to dine and dance and hang out under the stars.

The presidents of many condos, including mine, won’t even step foot on the roof. To them it’s alien territory, a no man’s land. Let Harry check it out.

Yet, instead of remote and distant, “aroof’ should be akin to the friendly woof woof dogs make when they see a friend. Until now, the last thing you would ever want to pet was your roof. But that’s changing. That’s right! If you treat your roof right, it can be not only be your best friend, but your company’s bottom line pal.

And while aroof has a similar sound as “aloof,” it’s way above aloof in stature as today it offers many capabilities to improve not only balance sheets, but our environment. Roofs can play a major role in putting climate change in a more positive and healthful direction. Woof woof!

So, what’s On Your Roof? Are you too aloof or are you aroof and ready to find out?

If you’re aloof, you’ll stop ignoring the potential of your roof to fatten your bottom line, while helping clean up our environment by having it outfitted with now highly functional and effective solar energy.

A leader in this field, SOLARBACK, plans to help Sunshine State businesses profit from solar energy.

Inspiration can strike at any time or place. For Joshua Schuster, the eureka moment came while he was walking across a crowded parking lot to a grocery store under the hot South Florida sun.

With the sun beating down on him, he was approaching this large shopping center. Schuster noticed how much unused horizontal real estate there is in South Florida.

He turns around and sees another shopping center across the street, then a strip mall next to that and eventually miles of empty roof space. If you imagine the roof as an additional usable floor, he wondered why would any landlord allow an entire floor to remain vacant without a tenant generating income?

The result of Schuster’s inspiration is SOLARBACK, a Boca Raton-based sister company to Schuster’s other CRE venture, SilverBack. Schuster is the managing and founding principal for the new company, whose team includes consultants and engineers with more than 50 years of combined experience in solar energy.

To Schuster, who has developed approximately $2B in mostly vertical commercial real estate in six states over the past decade, all of those vacant roofs present a largely untapped opportunity for building owners, landlords and investors. Instead of sitting largely vacant, flat commercial roofs across the state could be used to generate clean energy while contributing to a build-

ing owner’s net operating income.

Schuster estimates there’s roughly eight billion sq. ft. of untapped potential sitting atop America’s big-box stores and shopping centers. Big operators, such as IKEA and Walmart, already recognize the opportunity. SOLARBACK, however, is targeting businesses such as grocery-anchored shopping centers and strip malls, whose owners either may not be aware of the potential sitting atop their buildings or who lack the capital to install solar panels themselves.

After taking a crash course in solar engineering, he like many others are realizing that there is a huge opportunity here to take advantage of all that underused horizontal real estate by becoming the tenant for those spaces.

“In our meetings with landlords and property managers, the pitch is simply: ‘Are you making any money on your roof?’ The answer is typically no, but that they’d like to.”

Schuster said SOLARBACK can help create additional revenue streams for landlords of brick-and-mortar retail, an asset class that continues to feel the impact of competition from e-commerce.

The new company has signed letters of intent with landlords that it hopes to convert into long-term leases on about two million sq. ft. of Florida commercial roofs, Schuster said. SOLARBACK has identified about nine million sq. ft. of additional roof space in the Sunshine State that it could target for its unique business model.

Schuster said SOLARBACK seeks to enter into 25-year to 49-year leases with provisions that allow for demolition clauses or friendly buyouts if the landlord wants to unwind the lease sooner. In the meantime, SOLARBACK is responsible for paying for and installing the panels and all associated equipment. It will even install a new roof for the owner if necessary.

“We amortize our costs over the length

of the long-term lease,” he said. “We’re not selling solar. Instead, we are tenants looking for real estate to rent, and then, just like with any tenant fit out, we’ll install our own system.”

Potential benefits for building owners include a lower energy bill, the ability to sell excess energy into the grid and a reduced carbon footprint.

Florida lawmakers might eventually allow building owners to sell excess energy directly to other power users via power purchase agreements, which are currently restricted under state law.

Entrepreneurs like Schuster see great potential at a time when energy rates are rising in Florida, while the cost to produce solar power shrinks.

They see increasing tailwinds behind this movement as Solar has become much more efficient while the rooftop modules themselves have become much cheaper and are hurricane-rated. At the same time, there’s a strong movement, led by the Fortune 500, to reduce the carbon footprint. So far, there’s been an enthusiastic reception from building owners to SOLARBACK’S model.

The moral here is DON’T BE ALOOF ABOUT YOUR ROOF. BE AROOF! AND WITH A FRIENDLER CLIMATE MAYBE FOR A CHANGE WE’LL HEAR WOOF WOOF.

Tom Madden loves to see things put to good use like the roof in the oceanfront condo where he lives in Boca Raton, Florida, The Chalfonte, where he’s urging the condo board to speak to Schuster. He’s also aroof to writing about anything that will reduce the dire effects of climate change including extoling one or his PR clients, attorney Peter Ticktin, for having the foresight to be the founder of The Global Warming Foundation. Madden is an author of many books, articles and blogs and is the founder and CEO of the international PR firm TransMedia Group.

A new word soon may land in our Lexicon joining that remote, distant, unfriendly Word ‘aloof.’ what would you think of someone who’s ‘aroof?’

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT

Am I too old? Are you?

Nobody pushed to throw Ruth Bader Ginsburg off the Supreme Court at 87. Politics aside, her age and her health were never big issues.

But I’m not surprised there’s an uproar over whether President Joe Biden and probable candidate former president Donald Trump should run again in 2024, when they’re 82 and 78.

No other presidents assumed the office in their 70s. Ronald Reagan famously joked about his age when he was inaugurated at 69, a month shy of his 70th birthday.

To say ageism is alive and well in politics is obvious. I have mixed emotions about it, don’t you?

Nobody wanted to watch Mitch McConnell have two medical crises on TV, or Dianne Feinstein get wheeled into Congress at 90. My Mom was in a wheelchair for years

and we took her everywhere. But she didn’t represent Republicans or the state of California.

GOP candidate Nikki Haley called the senate a “nursing home.”

And at 76, Utah’s Sen. Mitt Romney said he won’t run again because he’ll be too old to finish his term if he wins. Really?

I’ll be 77 next month. When I complained about my age last year to everyone who would listen, I got laughed at. Now I understand why. The new 80 is really the new 60. The latest mantra is “active senior” and all the ads show older people on the move. My generation’s expected to stay productive and physically active as long as they want to. Nice to see that chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell’s still working for MSNBC. I knew her in Philly at the start of our careers. She’s the same age as me.

In ESPN office in Boca Raton are (back row from left) Gabriel Cirillo, Anna Damas, Tyler Mumford, and in the forefront Doug Mosley, executive director, 2023 Roofclaim.com Boca Raton Bowl.

Q: When ESPN hired you in 2014 to create a college football bowl game in Boca Raton from scratch, did you ever imagine there would be a 10th Roofclaim.com Boca Raton Bowl? It’s on Dec. 21 this year. I see a countdown on your website https://roofclaimbocaratonbowl. com/

A: I’m quoting a national sports broadcaster who predicted the Boca Bowl would never even see game 3!

Q: What made you take that on?

A: I got a call from someone I had worked with before, telling me they were putting together bowl games for ESPN. They had already announced they were creating a game the year before I was hired.

Q: Fast forward a decade, and the game is broadcast nationally (on ESPN, ESPN and locally on ESPN 106.3) using FAU Stadium as a venue. Events leading up to the game include a popular chefs’ tailgate competition on Nov. 8 at BRiC; both marching bands and spirit squads in Mizner Park Amphitheater the night before; a fanfest for families early on game day. My favorite part is the pre-game battle of the bands before kickoff at 8 p.m. this year. When will the two college football teams be announced, and when will game tickets go on sale?

A: Both on Dec. 3. We announce the teams through the media. We haven’t raised the ticket price. It’s $32 for the end zone and $57 for reserved sidelines. Keep an eye on our

website for all the announcements. I love the battle of the bands, too, having no musical talent myself.

Q: Did you go to a Big 10 college?

A: I’m from Seehorn, Ill., a town of 14. It was so close to the Mississippi River that I could hear the calliope when the Delta Queen came

Q: Where did you go?

A: I earned my bachelor’s degree in 1985 from Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri, with a major in business and minor in journalism. I was honored in the spring of 2022 by the Athletic Hall of Fame. All the people who were guideposts in my life were there. It was really

to them on the radio. My Dad was a huge fan, so I’m a third-generation Cardinals fan. Now they have spring training at Roger Dean stadium in Jupiter. I’ve brainwashed my daughter Katie, who’s a sophomore at Spanish River High. My son Luke is 21 and waiting for basic training orders for the Navy. I married my wife Wendy in 2020. The kids are from my previous marriage to Stacy, who works for FAU.

Q: Were you in the service?

A: No, because of my eyes. I have a genetic cataract condition and my first surgery was at age 12. I’m blind in my left eye since 2016. My optic nerve is fine, but I have a corneal failure. I don’t see people waving at me from the left side!

Q: I noticed you’re about to become president of the Palm Beach County Sports Commission on Oct. 1.

A: I’m also in Leadership Palm Beach County with Jason Hagensick, president and CEO of the YMCA of South Palm Beach County. I’m on their board. I’m also on the boards of our charity partner the Spirit of Giving, and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Palm Beach County.

Q: What else have you done in the community to became “Mr. Boca Bowl?

A: I’m in the Rotary Club of Boca Raton, and I give about 40 talks a year.

by. We had a 3-acre family farm with livestock, but my father was also an auctioneer. I worked with him. He also had a real estate company in Quincy, a much bigger town. My brother lives near Las Vegas now, and both of us said: “We’re on our way to somewhere else.”

special. I earned a graduate degree in business later.

Q: I notice you have hundreds of bobbleheads St Louis Cardinals players and other team memorabilia in your office.

A: My paternal grandfather watched the Cardinals or listened

Q: And finally to recap your career, you started in retail management, but realized that wasn’t for you. Then you moved around the country in such far-flung spots as Kansas City, Mo.; Clarksville, Tenn., Cincinnati, Tulsa, Destin, Fla. and Atlanta, where you helped launch a regional sports network for Comcast.

A: I became a stockbroker in Destin, Fla. but the timing wasn’t right. I talked my way into a volunteer job at the University of West Florida in Pensacola and was almost immediately hired. That changed everything.

The Addison, The Rudman Law Group and Rotary Club Downtown Boca Raton Host 140+ Dignitaries, Honorees and Sponsors at Reception to Kick Off 2023 Boca Raton Mayors Ball

Boca Raton, FL – As Reception Sponsor, The Addison set a decadent stage with a historic sense of place for the VIP pre-reception hosted by The Rudman Law Group for the upcoming Eighth Annual Boca Raton Mayors Ball presented by The Rotary Club Downtown Boca Raton (RCDBR). In exciting prelude to the “main” gala event on Saturday, November 11 at Boca West Country Club, RCDBR President Kim Champion, host sponsor Doug Rudman and Rotarians welcomed honorees, sponsors, and committee members to the lavish reception. Attendees included Boca Raton City, Palm Beach County and Florida state elected officials, Mayors Ball sponsors and honorees, and Rotarians enjoying “supper by the bite,” wines and champagne, while having the advance opportunity to socialize and learn about plans for the Ball.

According to Mayors Ball Co-chairs Jon and Bonnie Kaye, whose firm Kaye Communications PR & Marketing is again producing the Ball, invitations for individual guests will be mailed this week and may be purchased online. The November black-tie event will feature a grand cocktail reception followed by a decadent epicurean farm-totable menu by the creative culinary collaboration of Boca West Country Club Executive Chef Paul Griffin and Michelin Star Chef Fabio Trabocchi, whose Restaurant Group will debut Fiolina Pasta House Boca Raton this fall.

Celebrating “The Best of Boca,” this Boca Raton Mayors Ball “Service Above Self” fundraiser is an opportunity to

recognize individuals and organizations, that through their daily community involvement and business practices, promote the City of Boca Raton positively and showcase Boca Raton as a great place to live, work, play and educate. Thus, the highlight of the gala will again be the presentation of the George Long Awards – named for the City’s first appointed mayor in 1924 – designed by Tiffany & Co. and again sponsored by Sklar Furnishings. According to Boca Raton Mayors Ball Co-chairs Jon and Bonnie Kaye and Honorary Co-chairs Jessie and Alex Price, this year’s event honors the following, who have each “championed the tradition of bringing indelible visionary ideas and transformation to Boca Raton.”

·Marta Batmasian (Individual Category)

·Boca Raton Airport Authority (For-Profit Category)

·The Faulk Center for Counseling (Nonprofit Category)

·Dr. Ira Gelb Health & Wellness Visionary Award will be presented to Boca Raton Regional Hospital at Baptist Health South Florida

Elaborate silent and exciting live auctions will support the gala’s “health and wellness” mission, as well as the open-to-the-public purchase of “Chance-To-Win” (CTW) tickets at $100 each for the opportunity to win one of four experiences valued from $400 to $3,000. CTW opportunities are a two-night stay at Loews South

Beach, a two-night stay at Waterstone Resort & Marina, a year of tickets for two to the performances at the FAU Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters Theater, and a Rapoport Restaurant Group Dine-Around. CTW ticket purchasers need not be present to win, and 100% of proceeds go directly to the “Service Above Self” Fund for health and wellness programs benefitting area nonprofits. Presented with Rotary International’s 2017 Distinguished Achievement Award, and recognized as Rotary District 6930’s 2018-2019, 2017-2018 and 2014-2015 “Rotary Club of the Year,” RCDBR, a 501(c)4 is dedicated to impacting the Boca Raton community through Rotary International’s mission of “Service Above Self. This Fall, Older Adults Should Protect Their Health

(StatePoint) With cold and flu season upon us, it’s time to protect yourself, not only from those seasonal threats, but also from other health risks.

“During the holidays, our lives get very busy with family and friends,” said Dr. J.B. Sobel, chief medical officer for Cigna Healthcare’s Medicare business. “Before then, please take time to ensure you get the preventive care you need to stay healthy.”

Preventive care is critical for everybody, but particularly for older adults, and especially in fall when risks can increase, Sobel said. Recommendations vary based on age, gender and health status, but the following are some of the most common for seniors, according to Sobel.

Vaccinations

There are a number of vaccines older adults need to consider to protect themselves. Flu and pneumonia, for example, are among some of the most common causes of senior deaths. There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to vaccination. Timing and frequency vary, depending on your health history. Ask your health care provider which vaccines are appropriate for you.

• Flu. This vaccine is administered annually, generally before the end of October, and is designed to match the latest circulating flu strains.

• Pneumonia. Administration varies based on health history. If you’re 65 or older and you’ve never had the vaccine before, then you’ll likely need two shots, which are administered a year apart.

• Shingles. The Centers for Disease Con-

trol and Prevention (CDC) recommends two doses of the shingles vaccine for healthy adults aged 50 and older, spaced two to six months apart, to prevent shingles and related complications.

• COVID-19. Ask your doctors about current recommendations for prevention of COVID-19 infections.

• RSV. Earlier this year, the Federal Drug Administration approved two separate vaccines to address respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in older adults. RSV, a common respiratory infection, usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms, but can be more severe in older adults and children. Talk to your doctor about whether you should get an RSV vaccine.

Health Screenings

The following health screenings are commonly recommended for older adults.

• Mammogram. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women in the United States, according to the CDC. Every woman is at risk, and risk increases with age. Fortunately, breast cancer can often be treated successfully when found early. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends women 50 to 74-years-old at average risk get a mammogram every two years.

• Colorectal screening. Colorectal cancer risk increases with age. Screenings can find precancerous polyps early, so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. The USPSTF rec-

ommends colorectal cancer screening for adults age 45 to 75. Though colonoscopy is the most comprehensive test, there are other options you may consider with the help of your provider.

• Bone density scan. USPSTF recommends women aged 65 and older, and women 60 and older at increased risk, be routinely screened for osteoporosis, a disease in which bones become weak and brittle. Screening may facilitate treatment that helps prevent fractures.

• Eye exam. Routine eye exams can identify early signs of eye disease that are more likely as people age. People with diabetes in particular are prone to retinopathy, which leads to vision loss. It’s recommended that people with diabetes have annual retinal screenings.

• Mental health checkup. Many people experience seasonal depression during fall. Mental health is strongly linked to physical health. Talk to your health care provider about both, including your personal and family history. They can connect you with additional mental health resources.

To prevent unpleasant surprises, Sobel suggests talking with your health care provider, pharmacist or insurer about preventive care costs. Fortunately, costs are often covered fully by Medicare or Medicare Advantage, he said.

Think Life Insurance Is Not for You? Consider These Insights

(StatePoint) Life insurance can provide protection to loved ones. But experts say that common misconceptions lead many to assume this important aspect of financial planning is not right for them.

“If you think you can’t afford life insurance or are not eligible, keep in mind that there are many different types of life insurance. Everyone has unique needs, so finding a policy that addresses your circumstances is key,” says Kate Long, consumer financial wellness advocate at Assurance IQ.

To help you navigate the complexities of finding and choosing life insurance, the team at Assurance IQ is debunking some of the most common misconceptions:

Myth: It’s impossible to secure life insurance with pre-existing conditions.

Reality: While it’s more difficult to acquire certain kinds of life insurance with pre-existing health

conditions, you have options. If you are denied a policy, consider enrolling in group life insurance through your employer, as pre-existing conditions may not be considered when signing up. Another option could be guaranteed issue life insurance, which can offer lifetime coverage without a medical exam or any health questions.

Myth: Retired people don’t need life insurance.

Reality: Life insurance is often viewed as a source of income replacement, but depending on your situation, you may still benefit from coverage even after you retire. For example, if you have debt, like a mortgage or medical bills, life insurance could help your family settle it in the event of your passing. It can also help fund final arrangements, relieving financial stress during a difficult time. The average cost of a funeral with a viewing and burial was $7,848 in

2021, making final expense insurance worth considering.

Myth: Buying life insurance is too complicated.

Reality: Approximately 106 million adults in the United States are underinsured or have no life insurance coverage. In a recent survey by Assurance IQ, 15% of those who are uninsured cited lack of knowledge about what kind of policy to get and 12% cited lack of knowledge around how much coverage to get as the reason they’ve elected to forgo coverage.

“Unfortunately, a large portion of today’s population remains uninsured because life insurance sales models weren’t designed to serve everyone,” says Long.

Speaking to a licensed insurance agent who sells life insurance from multiple carriers can help simplify the process. An agent can ask questions to understand your needs and deliver personalized rec -

ommendations for relevant insurance products.

Myth: Life insurance is too expensive.

Reality: Life insurance may be more affordable than you think. Term life insurance could be a great option for budget-conscious consumers who need to protect their income or pay off a debt.

For example, if you have a mortgage, you might purchase a term life insurance policy for the life of the mortgage so that your spouse could stay in your home in the event of your untimely death. You can get an estimate of what your term life insurance rates might be with Assurance IQ’s calculator at assurance.com/life-insurance/ term-life-insurance-calculator.

Life insurance can be an important part of financial planning. Before you buy a policy, do your research and understand which type of life insurance is right for you.
