The Boca Raton Public Library invites the community to exchange ideas and engage in meaningful civil discourse through its weekly programs of the Socrates Café and the Socratic Discussion Group.

The Socrates Café meets every Tuesday from 1:30–3:00pm at the Downtown Library, and the Socratic Discussion Group meets every Thursday from 1:30–3:00pm at the Spanish River Library. Both programs offer a welcoming and open atmosphere for conversation and learning. Participants can expect a moderated philosophical discussion in a thoughtful, respectful group setting. Topics are chosen by group consensus, and themes challenge thinking while cultivating a sense of connectedness and civic engagement.

Boca Beat Hannah Herbst from Florida Atlantic University High School was awarded the Intel ISEF Best of Category Award of $5,000, Translational Medical Science, for her project, titled “Sharks Take a Bite Out of Infection! An Antibacterial, Reusable Bandage for Post-Operative Patients,” at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), a program of the Society for Science & the Public, and the world’s largest international pre-college science competition.

• High school students who are leaders in their communities recently graduated from the Solomon Leadership Program, earning University credit. Twenty-two of the 29 teenagers who graduated from the program April 9 completed collegiate-level coursework to earn a credit from the valuesbased leadership program, said Catherine T. MacArthur School of Leadership Dean Dr. Craig Domeck. This is the first year the program offered PBA credit.

• Boca Raton Regional Hospital (BRRH) is the first hospital in Florida to adopt game-changing technology for some of its most complicated and lengthy neurosurgical procedures. The ORBEYE 4K-3D Video Microscope will be used by neurosurgeons at the Marcus Neuroscience Institute (MNI) for skull-based and spine procedures. The technology provides superior visualization, shortens surgical time and enhances patient outcomes through minimally-invasive techniques.

• The Cultural Council of Palm Beach County has named West Palm Beach artist Hegina Rodrigues as recipient of the 2018 Dina Baker Fund for Mature Female Artists. Rodrigues is a self-taught artist whose work has developed over decades, particularly from her travels. Not limited to two dimensions, she creates work with found objects into assemblage. Her process commingles with the art classes she teaches to children and adults around the world, including the Council’s Arts in My Backyard Afterschool program.

• Florida Atlantic University’s first class of Doctor of Social Work (DSW) graduates from the Phyllis and Harvey Sandler School of Social Work within the College for Design and Social Inquiry recently earned their degrees. The DSW degree is the first program of its kind to be offered in the state of Florida.

University’s Schmidt College of Medicine and Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s (BRRH) Marcus Neuroscience Institute are taking treatment options to the next level. Jang-Yen (John) Wu, Ph.D., distinguished professor of biomedical science in FAU’s Schmidt College of Medicine, and Brian Snelling, M.D., chief of cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery and medical director of the Marilyn and Stanley Barry Center for Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke at the Marcus Neuroscience Institute and BRRH, have joined forces to combine a breakthrough interventional procedure for stroke with a novel drug compound that has neuroprotective properties.

• Art enthusiasts can expect to be moved this fall by three exhibits that cover a range of topics including sexual assault and its effect on victims. Welcome Anna Campitelli Rubenstein, the newly named Development Specialist at Boca Helping Hands.

Campitelli Rubenstein was previously a Development Associate at the Dallas Zoo and a grant writing consultant. She is a graduate of the University of Florida where she received her BA in English and Zoology and went on to DePaul University where she earned her Masters in Public Relations and Advertising.

Boca Helping Hands also announced a gift from the estate of Arthur J. Remillard, Jr. of just over $1 million to its endowment fund, intended to help ensure long-term financial viability of the organization.

Gary Peters, Boca Helping Hands’ Board President, noted “Arthur Remillard’s first major gift to Boca Helping Hands in 2006 enabled us to purchase the building we are in today, allowing our organization to expand from its beginnings as a small soup kitchen. His estate gift will help ensure that we can keep growing and serving those in need for decades to come.”

The Remillard Family Resource Center opened in 2010 and today, Boca

Helping Hands feeds 150-200 people a hot meal six days a week, serving 4,000 people monthly.

The organization distributes almost 6,000 pantry bags (groceries) to needy people each month. It also provides job training and job mentoring, underwrites medical and dental visits for the uninsured and contributes limited financial assistance to qualified Boca Raton residents in crisis. Boca Helping Hands has expanded pantry pickup and medical service to Boynton Beach and assists community members in need throughout Palm Beach County.

“Our father was passionate about wanting to help establish a comprehensive resource center for the less privileged citizens of this great town,” said Regan Remillard, Arthur’s son.

“Boca Helping Hands is the culmination of that passion, and our father’s Legacy Gift will help Boca Helping Hands continue its critical, compassionate mission of providing food, access to medical care, financial assistance and job training to Boca’s neediest residents.”

The Remillard family continues its support of and involvement with Boca Helping Hands and Arthur’s grandchildren volunteer whenever they visit Boca Raton.

FAU Participates in Historic Business Development Mission to Israel with Gov. Ron DeSantis

Florida Atlantic University President John Kelly, along with FAU Board of Trustee members Dr. Jeffrey Feingold and Brad Levine, Daniel Flynn, Ph.D., FAU vice president of research, and James Sullivan, Ph.D., executive director of FAU’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, recently traveled to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Jamal Sowell, Florida’s secretary of commerce, on a historic Business Development Mission to Israel.

During the trip, FAU signed five Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with both universities and organizations to further strengthen the university’s ties with higher education and research in the State of Israel.

FAU and the University of Haifa signed an MOU to collaborate on research focusing on the fields of marine science and engineering, invasive species and harmful algal blooms, and other opportunities. In a separate MOU, the two schools agreed to collaborate on exchange programs for faculty and students, especially in support of marine sciences and diplomacy programs.

FAU signed an MOU with Tel Aviv University to collaborate on neuroscience research, which will allow both universities to explore the development of research and training from molecular genetics studies to behavioral analyses and disease states.

FAU also signed an MOU with Ariel University to develop and exchange opportunities for scholars and students alike, and explore cooperative research opportunities in areas ranging from medicine and human health issues to diseases,

such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

FAU’s Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering (I-SENSE) and the agricultural research organization Volcani Center signed an MOU that outlines a shared goal to develop advanced technologies to improve monitoring, communications, data analytics and machine learning in the agricultural industry.

“These Memorandums of Understanding mark the initiation of promising work between educational experts from Florida and Israel on issues that directly impact our citizens,” said DeSantis. “This is a journey that we will share together to the benefit of both Israelis and Floridians and we look forward to more comradery and collaboration in the future.”

The trip also included a visit to U.S. Ambassador David Friedman’s residence and a ceremonial meeting of Florida’s cabinet members at the embassy in Jerusalem.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to attend Gov. DeSantis’ Business Development Mission to Israel,” said Kelly. “As one of two sponsors of the Florida–Israel Institute, FAU has long-established ties with several Israeli universities that already are benefitting education and innovation in business, engineering, marine science, medicine and more. We strengthened those relationships during this trip and built on previously signed MOUs to provide additional research and educational opportunities for students, both here at FAU and in Israel.”

Propel Grad Named 2019 Kelly Strul Emerging Scholar, Fulfilling Her Late Mother’s Dream

For Gregg Francis, the end of each school year brings mixed emotions.

As the CEO for PROPEL, he has the bittersweet job of watching his seniors fulfill the mission of his nonprofit organization – to leave the afterschool program to pursue a post-secondary academic career, thanks, in part, to the tutoring, guidance and support they received from PROPEL. But even as he hugs them goodbye, he’s smiling at their triumph.

This year, graduate Guesnaisha Altena, 18, of Boca Raton High School, makes him especially proud.

She is part of the newest class of Kelly/ Strul Emerging Scholars program, which welcomes firstgeneration, local students to attend Florida Atlantic University on full scholarship.

The program dedicates $50,000 per student, which breaks down to $12,500 per year for four years. It is designed to help students with each step of the college process including mentoring, housing, achieving financial literacy, embracing Owl pride, joining student organizations, becoming a mentor, becoming an intern, preparing for graduation and ultimately securing a job.

For Altena, it is not only a dream come true for her, but also the realization of a wish held by her mother, who passed away in earthquake in Haiti. Altena found PROPEL through friends, after struggling to assimilate to American culture on her own.

“I needed help with my classes and learning the language,” said Altena, who was born in Haiti before coming to the U.S. with her father and seven sisters.

Her sister, 15, also takes tutoring classes at PROPEL. Altena created a video for a class project that detailed the agoniz-

ing loss of her mother, when on January 12, 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake devastated the Caribbean island nation. The quake, which was the strongest to strike the region in more than 200 years, left more than 200,000 people dead and some 895,000 Haitians homeless.

Following the tragedy, Altena’s family moved to South Florida, where she had no connections and had to begin again. PROPEL works with a large number of transplanted youth, who are simultaneously learning a new language, building a network of friends and trying to excel in school.

PROPEL (People Reaching Out to Provide Education & Leadership) is dedicated to helping disadvantaged youth from south Lantana to Boca Raton achieve academic success through leadership training, tutoring and life-skills programs. Located in east Boca Raton, PROPEL successfully works with more than 100 students through its after-school and weekend programs, focusing on literacy enhancement, SAT/ACT Prep, STEM programs, healthy living initiatives and post- secondary career planning.

Altena embodies the hope of Kelly/Strul Emerging Scholars program Co-Founder Aubrey Strul of Boca Raton – a first-generation student/now influential, local business owner, who spearheaded the program in 2017. Strul wants to underwrite more students to attend Florida Atlantic University because he cannot fathom smart, ambitious students walking away from school due to lack of money.

“This is what I’ve always wanted to do – earn my degree, take care of my family and make my parents proud,” Altena said.

The City of Boca Raton’s Recreation Services Department is launching a community engagement campaign to determine needs and priorities for the future of Boca Raton and Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District parks, trails, beaches, recreation facilities, athletic fields, programs, services and City libraries. Members of the public are invited to the first kick-off meeting which will be held on June 13 from 5:30pm – 7pm at the Downtown Library.

“I’m excited for our community to work together to brainstorm new and innovative ideas which can be implemented in the next decade,” explained Michael Kalvort, Recreation Services Director.

To lead this campaign, the City hired Indianapolis-based PROS Con-

sulting, INC., a nationally renowned parks and recreation management consulting firm.

Neelay Bhatt, Vice President and Principal with PROS Consulting, INC. and a veteran of 100+ similar planning initiatives will lead the process.

Included in the campaign is a Recreation Services Community Needs Assessment survey that the City and Greater Boca Raton Beach and Parks District provided funding for.

The survey will be designed and implemented by PROS consulting beginning in June 2019 and concluding in February or March of 2020.

Phases of the community engagement campaign will include meetings and surveys with residents to learn about their interests and suggestions. The public will be able to follow along with the progress of the Needs Assessment group with updates on the website, and results will be presented in March/April 2020.

The results will be used for future space, service and technology planning.

Merilee, Middleton: a Pioneer in Local Mental Health Counseling

Dr. Merrilee R. Middleton, a psychologist who helped change the public perception of mental illness, is being remembered for bringing mental health counseling to thousands of South Floridians who may not otherwise have been able to afford it.

As of press time, Dr. Middleton, 86, was in hospice care at her home in Boca Raton. Her public legacy in Palm Beach County is massive and impressive: In a career spanning more than 50 years, she led the way in providing crucial services for those with mental illness in the School District of Palm Beach County. She also is credited with creating counseling services and practicing up and down the eastern United States, picking up seemingly every civic award along the way. And yet, it was her human, personal touch that lingers in the minds of those who knew her.

“Merrilee has been a staunch supporter of quality mental health services for decades and will be remembered as a pioneer in this work. She will always be a shining star,” said Dr. Seth Bernstein, vice president of Boca Raton’s Promise, a non-

profit to which Dr. Middleton gave birth.

The organization creates outreach programs and activities to bring awareness and resources to those in need and their families.

Dr. Middleton’s impact on mental health care in Palm Beach County would be difficult to exaggerate. After moving to Boca Raton in the late 1960s, she worked as a counselor at Boca Raton High School before serving as a program specialist in secondary education for district.

In 1968, while pursuing her Education Specialist degree from Florida Atlantic University, Dr. Middleton and then Stetson (Deland) University professor and psychologist Elizabeth H. Faulk established counseling services and trainings for hundreds of people in Palm Beach and Broward counties.

Faulk started the Elizabeth Faulk Foundation in 1970, which, three years later, led to establishment of the Center for Group Counseling. The center operated for a decade in a rented storefront downtown until it moved, in 1981, to its present site on Boca Rio Road on donated land from Palm

Beach County.

Today, the center is a site for graduate student training, support groups, and counseling and therapy for people who may not be able to afford private mental health care.

Dr. Middleton served as clinical and training director at the Center while earning her doctorate from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale.

During the Bush administration, the center was designated as the country’s 813th Point of Light in recognition of its emphasis on volunteerism.

I first met “Doc” in 1998 when then retired U.S. Army Gen. Colin Powell visited Florida Atlantic University at the invitation of Dr. Middleton and the late Dan Weppner, a retired FAU professor who was a devout advocate of public schools and student volunteerism.

Powell also helped launched Boca Raton’s Promise - The Alliance For Youth, the local affiliate of his national nonprofit America’s Promise.

Then governor, Lawton Chiles, invited her the previous year to be one of

five State delegates to organize “Communities of Promise” in Florida and attend the Presidential Summit for America’s Youth in Philadelphia.

I worked closely with her on several youth mental health initiatives and I saw how passionate she was about the topic. She had a way of conveying the seriousness of the illness while maintaining an unforced conversational delivery, which was warm as the voice of an informed companion.

“She lived some of those experiences in her own life,” said Rita Thrasher, a longtime trusted friend, protégé, caretake and current president & CEO of Boca Raton’s Promise. “She understood. She appreciated.”

The Untried But True Path To Failure

Have you ever chosen not to attempt things because of fear you might fail?

Maybe it was assuming greater responsibility at work, trying to change careers, or even attempting to begin an ambitious self-improvement program? I have to admit having been guilty of that several times. This is ironic, because if we decide not try to do something, there is 100 percent certainty we will not accomplish it.

Not long ago I came across a quote from an unknown source that states, “Every accomplishment starts with a decision to try.” Sounds like a no-brainer, because it seems like common sense. But when we confront a challenge and determine it is not worth the effort – or the risk of failure – to attempt, we affirm this “sense” is not so common after all.

Most of us are familiar with the classic case of Thomas Edison, inventor of the incandescent light bulb, who had to make hundreds of attempts before he

finally succeeded in producing an electrical light as he had imagined. Scanning the pages of history, we could find countless other examples. But my intent here is not to celebrate the successes of those to tried and persisted. Rather, it is to mourn all of those who have conceived great ideas, but failed because they were unwilling to try.

A Chinese philosopher named Mencius many centuries ago expressed it in other terms: “The difference between enthusiasm and indifference is filled with failures.” My friend, Mike, comes to mind.

Years ago he chose to leave a secure, wellcompensated job to start a software consulting company from scratch. His “office” was in the basement of his house, his makeshift desk consisting of a door stretched across two file cabinets. He knew it was risky, having a small family and leaving the certainty of a steady paycheck, along with corporate benefits such as health insurance.

As bills began to mount and he

was briefly hospitalized with a serious illness, Mike was tempted to give up on his dream. “What was I thinking?” he asked himself more than once. But he determined to continue pursuing his vision and found a much-needed client “just in the nick of time.” Over time he and a small staff built the business into a successful international company. Tough Business in a Fallen World

When Tom Phillips, the former CEO of Raytheon, passed away, his Wall Street Journal obituary included a story about a Harvard University undergraduate who posed an intriguing question. The student asked Mr. Phillips if he believed there was a contradiction between his Christian faith and running a huge corporation that manufactures missiles for warfare.

Mr. Phillips’ response was both honest and carefully considered, observing the reality of the human condition. He said, “We would like it to be a world where armies and weapons were not necessary.

But there is a basic greed in man. Man is flawed, I believe. And nations are flawed.

We have to provide for a common defense.”

Most of us do not work for companies that produce weapons for war.

However, finding ourselves in a profession – or employed in industries – that necessarily must address the “flaws in man,” as Mr. Phillips termed it, can present challenges when uncomfortable decisions must be made.

Persons working in law enforcement, for instance, every day deal with the darkest sides of humanity. Attorneys may be called upon to represent not only victims of criminal activity, but also the perpetrators of crimes. The pharmaceutical industry provides important medical treatment for many people, but in some cases the drugs produced prove extremely harmful when misused or abused. Sometimes physicians and nurses must make difficult choices when there are no simple solutions. Even educators can face major challenges.

Perhaps your job at times presents circumstances that test your values and convictions. Does this mean when we arrive at an ethical crossroads, we must give up or take the path of least resistance? If we are followers of Jesus Christ, we might even be tempted to wonder, “God, why did you call me to this profession?”

While the Bible does not promise easy answers to every ethical dilemma, the Lord does call us to serve Him – and others – in many difficult realms. For instance, 1 Corinthians 7:17 teaches, “Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them.”

Just as in biblical times Christ’s disciples found themselves engaged in often challenging lines of work, we too must seek God’s wisdom, guidance and grace in carrying out difficult responsibilities. I believe that in His desire to redeem a fallen world – people who have strayed far from God’s design – He necessarily places some people in tough industries. If we can accept this as His will for us, what else can we do to perform our tasks and make hard decisions in ways that please Him? Here are some guidelines He provides in the Scriptures:

Ask for wisdom. Hopefully it does not happen often, but when challenging circumstances require complex decisions, we should ask God to provide the wisdom we need to do what is best. “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5).

Seek wise counsel. We should find people with wisdom, individuals we can consult with when difficult situations confront us. “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisers make victory sure” (Proverbs 11:14).

Pray for strength. When the culture around us says we should act contrary to our convictions, God can provide the needed resources to resist the temptation to yield. “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak… those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength” (Isaiah 40:29-31).

Martha Susan Lynn Miller, 79, of Leesburg, Virginia, died peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, June 5, 2019, at Maple Grove in Ashburn, VA, after a long illness. Ms. Miller is survived by her son Andrew Gavin Miller, daughter Mitzi Gaye Miller, and daughter-inlaw Ann Delory Miller, all of Sterling, VA, and former husband Harold Gene Miller of Great Falls, VA. Ms. Miller is also survived by siblings Joe Brown Lynn of Camby, IN, Patricia Ann Everhart of Cary, NC, and Janice Ellen Lynn of Rockwall, TX, brother-in-law Marion Lusk of League City, TX, sister-in-law Joyce Lynn of Tullahoma, TN, Mark Tennant of Cary, NC, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her siblings Sammie Jean Chance of Huntsville, AL, Bonnie Lois Lusk of League City, TX, and Billy Campbell Lynn of Tullahoma, TN, and nephew Barry Wilson of Huntsville, AL. Martha Susan Lynn was born on January 16, 1940 in Cookeville, TN to Samuel Asa Lynn and Jean Brown Lynn, now deceased.

She went by Susan Lynn Miller after marrying Harold Miller in Cookeville, TN, in

1959. She subsequently lived briefly in Langley, VA, and with her husband raised her son and daughter in Dickinson, TX and Acton, MA. Divorced in 1985, she lived in Cambridge, MA, before retiring from banking in the early 1990’s and then relocating first to Boca Raton, FL, and later to Delray Beach, FL.

She eventually moved north to Virginia to be near her adult children. Ms. Miller is fondly remembered as a loving mother, sister and aunt who was extremely smart and very kind. She paused her college education to raise a family, later returning to school to complete undergraduate and graduate degrees, then rising to the level of Vice-President of Cambridge Trust Bank in Cambridge, MA. Ms. Miller took up golf as an adult, and played golf in Massachusetts and then extensively in Florida as a member of the Broken Sound Club (Boca Raton) and later the Mizner County Club (Delray Beach).

In an article recently published in The Journal of Innovations in Cardiac Rhythm Management, doctors at Boca Raton Regional Hospital are exploring the use of the axillary fossa (the hollow of the armpit) as an alternative site for implantation of cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators.

According to E. Martin Kloosterman, MD, FHRS, FACC, Jonathan Rosman, MD, FHRS, FACC and Murray Rosenbaum, MD, FHRS, FACC, the lack or inadequate thickness of subcutaneous tissue in certain patients can give rise to significant problems for those with – or requiring – cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs).

“While not entirely exclusive to the elderly, older patients certainly have a higher incidence of fragile tissue and thin subcutaneous fat layers,” noted Dr. Kloosterman. “This, in turn, can lead to pressure from a device being placed on the tissue and give rise to erosion, infection, discomfort and hypersensitivity at the implant site.”

Normally, CIEDs are implanted in subclavicular locations (below the collarbone). For patients with sensitivity issues, an implant under the pectoral muscle has served as a viable alternative. Yet, there remains a certain patient subgroup with thin or atrophic pectoralis muscle, which can foster excessive device protrusion, or those who are experiencing difficulties with prior implantation of a device in that area.

In examining the axillary fossa as a viable option as an implant site, the

doctors, who are all electrophysiologists at Boca Regional’s Lynn Heart and Vascular Institute, found several compelling advantages.

First, the area usually has a preserved fat pad, even in thin individuals.

Second, the site remains unperturbed by arm movement and does not have any direct exposure to contact.

Lastly, the site is easily accessed, with no significant compromise of neurovascular structures and is in close proximity to the conventional subclavicular implant location.

“Our initial experience with the use of the axillary fossa as an alternative location for device implantation has been quite encouraging,” commented Dr. Kloosterman. “All of the procedures were well-tolerated and the devices were well-seated with proper and adequate function.”

Moreover, Dr. Kloosterman characterizes the axilla as essentially a “protected space” with no direct contact to other body structures or external elements such as clothing and seat belts.

It is also not subject to pressure from sleeping or lying on the site.

“The axillary fossa offers an attractive alternative site for device implantation when addressing both clinical and comfort concerns of our patients,” he concluded. “Its use is a novel technique conceived and developed at our institution, and provides substantive benefit, especially to those in the elderly population.”

SPORTS PBSC Malik Curry & Martin McCann Are Heading To Las Vegas

Malik Curry has been selected to the 2019 NJCAA Men’s Basketball Association All-Star Game in Las Vegas, NV. The event will be held at The Orleans Arena on May 18 at 4:30 pm.

The All-Star Game is presented by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and features 24 players in total: 12 from NJCAA Division I, 6 from Division II, and 6 from the Division III. Curry, is just one of 12 players at the NJCAA Division I level nationwide to be invited to this prestigious event. He and Northwest Florida’s Chris Duarte represent Region VII as the only two players from Florida to be invited. Curry recently signed with Old Dominion University after a stunning 2018-19 season, which included: Southern Conference Player of the Year, NJCAA 2nd Team All-American,

Southern Conference 1st Team, FCSAA All-Tournament Team, 2x FCSAA Player of the Week.

Invited alongside Curry is Coach Martin McCann, who in his own right, earned nearly as many accolades as Curry. McCann was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year and posted his 4th 20-win season in five years at Palm Beach. McCann also received the coveted “30-under-30” recognition from the National Association of Basketball Coaches as a coach that has incredible potential and has achieved tremendous success before the age of 30.

Curry is the 1st player in the McCann era to be named to the NJCAA All-Star Game.

Archer Picked by Chicago White Sox in 2019 MLB Draft

Lynn University’s baseball program continues to show its strength as Tom Archer became the Fighting Knights’ second selection on Wednesday in the 2019 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft. The Chicago White Sox nabbed the senior second baseman with their third pick in the 39rd Round, 1160th overall, giving the Blue and White two draftees in the same draft for the first time in program history.

Archer joins fellow senior Shayne Fontana as Lynn’s second player off the board on day three with Fontana going to the Baltimore Orioles with the first pick in the 23rd Round. Archer also becomes the 10th player selected from Lynn in the last 11 years and 12th since 2003.

The Fort Salonga, N.Y. native played in 94 games during his time in the Blue and White, collecting 105 hits with a career .279 batting average. As a Fighting Knight, Archer racked up 40 extrabase hits, including nine home runs, and 45 RBI. He also posted a .354 on-base percentage and struck out just 49 times in 376 at-bats.

Under head coach Rudy Garbalosa, 12 players have been drafted with

nine more signing free agent deals with MLB clubs. Palm Beach Atlantic baseball junior Brandon Seltzer was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-South Region Second Team on Wednesday.

Seltzer batted .335 on the season and started all 49 games for the Sailfish.

The junior slugged 10 home runs and added 10 doubles and three triples to go with his team-high 43 RBI and 38 runs scored.

The outfielder also added 10 stolen bases in 12 attempts to lead the team. Seltzer had 24 multi-hit games during the season, and finished his season on a high note, going 5-for-12 with two homers and six RBI in a series win over Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla.

PBA finished 24-25 on the season and 14-16 in Sunshine State Conference play.

Fontana Selected by Baltimore Orioles in ’19 MLB Draft

Lynn University's Shayne Fontana capped a stellar two-year career in the Blue and White by having his name called at the 2019 MLB Draft on Wednesday afternoon. The Baltimore Orioles selected the senior center fielder with their first pick in the 23rd Round, 675th overall.

Fontana becomes the ninth player selected from Lynn in the last 11 years and 11th since 2003.

He is the fifth, and highest-drafted, position player in program history and first since Tyler Curtis in 2017.

A Second Team ABCA/Rawlings All-South Region and All-SSC selection, Fontana was the catalyst for the Lynn offense during the 2019 campaign, leading the Fighting Knights in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, hits and runs scored. 'Stix' also ranked in the top-10 in the SSC in slugging (.564), on-base (.454), runs scored (49) and walks (32).

The Lebanon, N.J. native also graduates with a total of eight triples, tied for fifth-most in program history.

Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy Partners with Saint Andrew’s School
