Sunrise Park Elementary receives $4,000 Grant to Support Youth Literacy

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently awarded Sunrise Park Elementary a $4,000.00 grant to support youth literacy. This local grant is part of $4.5 million in youth literacy grants awarded to approximately 1,000 organizations across the 43 states that Dollar General serves. Given at the beginning of the academic school year, these grants are aimed at supporting teachers, schools and organizations with resources to strengthen and enhance literacy instruction.

Boca Raton Garden Club Presents Annual Holiday House Bazaar

The Boca Raton Garden Club will present its annual Holiday House fundraiser on Friday , Saturday and Sunday Nov 11- 13th from 9AM to 3PM, 2016, in its clubhouse and gardens at 4281 NW 3rd Ave in Boca .

Recently honored “Best Garden Club” in the Deep South Region of National Garden Clubs which includes 6 states, the Boca Raton Garden Club has been serving the Boca community for over 60 years. The yearly Holiday House is the club’s major fundraiser which supports college scholarships and junior gardening for local students, Garden Therapy for Alzheimer patients at FAU’s Wellness Center, as well as Boy Scout projects and Place of Hope at the Haven. Holiday House funds were also used this summer to send students from Boca to Camp Wekiva, a nature camp.

Community Boca Raton Garden Club Presents Annual Holiday House Bazaar

well as homemade goodies!”

She added, “We’d like everyone to come and shop – or just browse and enjoy the holiday atmosphere in both our clubhouse and spectacular gardens!”

“Our crafters have been creating handmade items since May this year” said Holiday House Co-chair, Janine Savitch. “We have seasonal decorations for Thanksgiving, Hanukah and Christmas, as well as unusual creations for year round enjoyment – many made from native Florida materials, such as palm fronds, pine cones and seashells.” Savitch added, “We have lovely seashell decorated mirrors, wreaths and floral table arrangements for all occasions, and new this year, we’re featuring custom embroidered linens and a big selection of hard to find holiday china pieces that will be of interest to collectors.”

“In addition to the wonderful crafts,” added Landscaping Chairman, Carol Rice, “we again are holding a huge plant sale in our club’s beautiful gardens. Plants grown and cultivated by our club’s own ‘dirt gardeners’ include herbs, orchids, succulents and a wide variety of natives. Gardening tools, accessories and ornamental pieces are available for purchase as well.”

The Holiday House event also features the sale of homemade treats including cookies, pies and cakes – all baked by club members. Mary Kaub, Bake Sale Co-chair, noted, “Every year the selection gets bigger and we sell out!

Everything from cookies to quiche! Lots of people will freeze goodies and serve them at Thanksgiving or Christmas.”

Carole Boucard Named Board President of The Symphonia | Boca Raton

The SYMPHONIA | BOCA RATON (thesymphonia.org), South Florida’s world class chamber orchestra, has announced that Carole Boucard has been elected to serve as President of the Board.

Boucard has served on the organization’s Board since 2007. She created the organization’s “Lunch and Learn” fundraising events at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, and was actively involved in “Meet the Orchestra,” a program that enables children and their parents to attend a Symphonia dress rehearsal and meet orchestra members at an “instrument petting zoo.” Boucard was also integrally involved in the organization’s 10th anniversary celebration, and currently serves as Chairperson for the organization’s ¡Tango Symphonia! fundraiser, taking place on November 12 at Boca West Country Club.

Boucard is a residential realtor at Coldwell Banker and, prior to that, served as Director of Public Relations at the Boca Raton Resort & Club. Police Officer Shows Heartwarming Act Of Kindness to Disabled Man

With so much of the news today centered on the upcoming general election, I was so relieved to learn recently of the heartwarming story of a local police officer who went above and beyond his duties to help a disabled man.

Dawn Terrizzi, an administrative assistant at the Delray Beach Police Department, met the man about 14 years ago at a local food pantry. Over time, several strokes left him paralyzed on his left side and he could no longer walk or take care of himself.

I will not be using his name at Terrizzi’s request because the Department of Children and Families is investigating the matter and she does not want to jeopardize the probe.

The man has been hospitalized for several months and with the exception of Terrizzi, he has no visitors. He

shared with her that he would like his hair and nails cut, but the hospital staff said they could not help him with that.

So Terrizzi told Sgt. Terrance Scott about the man’s dilemma.

Scott, who had been on the force for nearly 20 years, donned his full police uniform and met Terrizzi at the hospital where he introduced himself to the man. The two spoke for few minutes until they broke the ice. Once the man became comfortable with Scott, the officer pulled out his clipper and cut his hair. He also shaved him and removed accumulated dead skin and food from his facial hair.

To hear Scott’s bosses put it, the man “looked like a new man.”

I can only imagine what that did for his self-esteem. The kindness and compassion that the officer showed restored some of the man’s dignity and

self-esteem

I am proud to say that his actions are indicative of some of the great things that our law enforcement officers do in our community. Blessed be the peacekeepers. This is what most of our law enforcement officers do on a daily basis – serve others.

I agree with several people that while this may not make the local news, much less national news, Scott is a hero in many people’s eyes.

This was evidenced when he was named employee of the month this week for the City of Delray Beach.

It was the right thing to do,” said Scott, who described himself as an unlicensed professional. “I was taught a long time ago that a friend in need is a friend indeed….I’m a professional. I don’t have a license but I’m a professional. How could you mess up a bald

head?”

Nonetheless, kudos to Sgt. Scott for his selfless and heartwarming act. It speaks volumes to the types of officers we have here in our local departments.

It is important for the public to know that law enforcement officials do more than just make arrests, but it often goes unnoticed when they go the extra mile.

There’s more to policing than making arrests and enforcing the law.

Sometimes taking those extra little steps makes the biggest difference in someone’s life.

Maintain the Right Perspective!

Recently, at my chiropractor’s office, while I waited for my turn, I noticed a special sign he had displayed in that waiting room. It simply stated, “If anything can go well, it will!” I was pleased to find that outlook emphasized, for most of the time people tend to believe more on what can go wrong, instead!

Obviously, we need to be on our guard for those negative possibilities as well, but we should never lose sight of the potential of things going well. If this is our true hope and intention, we shall work on that possibility more, rather than just fearing its opposite!

I once read that “your point of view depends on your point of view-

ing!” Everything we consider in life needs to be contemplated from the best possible angle. In fact, from several perspectives! Yet, so many people prefer to see only impossibilities in every opportunity instead of embracing what may appear difficult, and still making something good with it.

Ultimately, all this depends on what people choose to believe about anything. Those who continually lament that everything tried before has never yielded good results, unquestionably will only see more of the same. The problem is not with the challenge per se, but with the one not willing to face it more courageously!

It is imperative for people to recognize that difficulties, hard work,

and even apparent impossible situations, do not indicate that a task before them cannot be achieved! Some of the greatest feats in the history of civilization have occurred and remained in spite of the negative cries of many, that it could not be done. Yet, through the decisiveness of many, steps were taken which led to a triumphant completion!

Every challenge we face needs to be examined from different perspectives, and a negative response should never be premature, until several possibilities have been attempted. Military victories, scientific experiments, diplomatic negotiations, the testing of new inventions, and countless more examples at the highest and most difficult levels, have become permanent realities

because those involved didn’t stop until they agreed on what would work.

The same needs to occur with our individual plans and challenges which, as difficult as they may appear, or actually be, are of far lesser magnitude than the other issues listed above.

The only answer to such questions was once expressed by the late Sir Winston Churchill, when addressing a significant graduating class. Perhaps the shortest such address in history was limited to these minimal, wise words: “Never, never, never give up!” We can do no less less with any assignment we’re given, or whatever challenge we face!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. B’nai Torah Collection for Haiti Hurricane Relief Yields an Outpouring of Support

B’nai Torah Congregation collected donations to relieve those affected

by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti on Sunday, October 16th, 9 am – 6 pm. The synagogue’s TLC Team requested a variety of items be brought to B’nai Torah where the team was waiting to help unload donations, and reload them onto a 40-foot trailer to be sent to Haiti. They expected to fill 8-10 pallets, but with the outpouring of support, they filled 26 pallets. Financial contributions were matched by Hands on Tzedakah (H.O.T.).

Today, four tractor trailers worth of donations, the equivalent of $272,000 in supplies, left the Port of Miami for Haiti.

The synagogue partnered with the Catholic Diocese of Miami who will see to it that the items get into the hands of the neediest and most vulnerable.

Rabbi David Steinhardt made the call to the community to come together for

the cause during Yom Kippur services, the holiest Jewish fasting day, last week. “The prophet Isaiah criticized a fast that responds only to oneself and doesn’t respond to human suffering,” Steinhardt said. “We live well and we were so fortunate to have escaped a major hurricane. Gratitude was transformed into acts of kindness. We prayed with our generosity.”

“We raised over one quarter of a million dollars in money, provisions and clothes in a few hours,” Steinhardt said.

“I’m proud to be in this community.”

 A homeless shelter will be able to continue operating thanks to a nearly $1 million purchase approved by the Palm Beach County Commission. The Center for Family Services, a nonprofit organization, was poised to stop operating Pat Reeves Village, a 19-unit apartment complex in West Palm Beach that provides shelter to homeless families. But county commissioners finalized a purchase of the complex that will allow it to continue serving the homeless. Another nonprofit organization Adopt-A-Family of the Palm Beaches will operate the shelter.

 Florida is raising its minimum wage to $8.10 an hour beginning Jan. 1, up 5 cents from $8.05 in 2016, the state Department of Economic Opportunity has announced. For tipped employees, the minimum wage will be at least $5.08 an hour.

The minimum wage rate is recalculated each year on Sept. 30, based on the Consumer Price Index. In 2016, the state's minimum wage was unchanged from the previous year. Many employers say they already pay more than the minimum.  If an airline delays returning your luggage after a flight, you will get a refund for your bag fee, under a new set of consumer-protection rules the Obama administration plans to adopt. Among other changes, the administration is calling on airlines to more accurately report on-time arrival rates, the number of times wheelchair requests are fumbled and the rate of lost or mishandled luggage.

The Great Leaf Blower Incident

Some time ago my wife suggested I stop patching up my old leaf blower and buy a new one. So I bought one at a local home improvement store. After a few minutes of blowing off the patio, however, I realized I had come very close to cutting off my fingers because there was no guard on the machine’s impeller.

I put it back in the box and returned it to the store. The clerk at the returns desk told me I needed to take it back to another store where she presumed I had bought it, since her store did not sell that brand. It did not take long to figure out someone had purchased a blower at the home improvement store, but then had put another, broken blower in the box and taken it back for a refund.

If the unknown customer’s outright larceny was not bad enough, apparently no one at the home store had bothered to look in the box before they put it back on the shelf. In failing to do so, they could have faced a major lawsuit if I or someone else had been injured using it. It would have nice if the store had apologized for their error, instead of wrongfully accusing me of not paying attention to what I was buying. Ultimately they did give me a replacement blower. I did open the box to inspect the new one before I left the store.

It may be impossible to avoid the thieves and petty criminals that would return faulty or damaged merchandise to another store, but we can control what goes out the door to our customers.

When I ran a coffeehouse, I always told our staff that a drink wasn’t a mistake until they handed it to a customer. “Double-check everything before you call their name,” I instructed them.

We all make bad food, poor pictures, or products that do not work. No one is perfect. The problem comes when we are

not competent enough to recognize the problem and fix it before the customer has to deal with it.

Competence comes from experience. In my business as a professional photographer, I have learned to know a good photo when I see it, and make sure the clients only get the best. Nobody sees the bad ones I have produced but me.

This principle applies to any business. We must strive to ensure the car is running right, the food is good, the software works, the tax return is correct, and that nobody gets fingers cutoff because of a missing safety guard. Wrong things happen because of incompetence or not caring about the client or customer.

Adhering to standards of excellence make good sense from a business perspective. When we serve our customers well, they are more likely to patronize us in the future. But there is an even higher reason for always doing our very best:

The Scriptures tell us, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (Colossians 3:17). If we perform shoddy work, can we in good conscience, “do it in the name of Jesus”?

Later in the same chapter it states, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men” (Colossians 3:23). We should be proud to present our work – whatever it is – to God as a precious, even sacrificial gift.

We are also told, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works…” (Ephesians 2:10). The quality of our work might be the greatest evidence of the genuineness of our faith.

Sunrise Park Elementary receives $4,000 Grant to Support Youth Literacy

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently awarded Sunrise Park Elementary a $4,000.00 grant to support youth literacy. This local grant is part of $4.5 million in youth literacy grants awarded to approximately 1,000 organizations across the 43 states that Dollar General serves. Given at the beginning of the academic school year, these grants are aimed at supporting teachers, schools and organizations with resources to strengthen and enhance literacy instruction.

sports Owls Racing Takes First Place at Formula SAE Match Race By: Kelsia Weekes

The Florida Atlantic University Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) racing team won first place in the 3rd Annual Formula SAE Match Race at the Lamar County Speedway in Barnesville, Georgia. The event was sponsored by the Georgia Sprint Karting Association.

The FAU team entered the 2016 racecar, OR-16. The OR-16 reached a best time of 23.318 seconds, making them the fastest car at the competition and the fastest four-cylinder car.

"Once again Owls Racing has proven its dominance over big name schools," said Marco Cheraso, FAU SAE team president. "We continue to learn from our previous design which helps make the new car faster than ever."

From the 32-person team, 14 members attended the competition while the remaining team members worked on the design of the OR-17 and the OR-15 which will be used for new member training.

"It was a good demonstration of last year's design concepts which will help the team with OR-17's design," said Halle Mayne, FAU SAE vice president.

The team members that attended the Barnesville race were made up of all mechanical engineering students with the exceptions of Nate Cadet, an exercise science major; Blake Lewend, a history major; Mayne, a criminal justice

major; Michael Simpson, an electrical engineering major and included Mathew Burgos, Cheraso, Bradford Davis, Dylan Kovar, Trent Ksionek, Obrien Lavin, Josh Mesnick, Alexis Ruiz, Steven Stanfield and Thomas Strickland. The team was also aided by team advisor, Oren Masory, Ph.D., professor of mechanical engineering at FAU, and FAU machinist, Fred Knapp. The team members that did not attend the race include mechanical engineering students Jeron Bornstein, Chris Branfield, Seth Chapman, Alex Conrad, Steve Gaillot, Kendrick Gauthier, Reed Goodman, Austin Licata, Jason Lin, Raymond Mathis, Jason Reyes, Ejay Valcin, Max Wellnitz; electrical engineering student, Stephen Lyons; neuroscience and behavior student Megan Caudle; pre-business student, Lunick Dorcelus; anthropology student, Melanie Maldonado; and mechanical and finance student, Richard Nelson.

The goal of the event is to help promote and advance an interest in engineering programs and to create a new venue for teams to compete at. Although the event was open to eight teams only five participated. The teams raced on a ¼ mile long course that averaged 20 feet in width and utilizes AMB timing equipment. The race consisted of a timed event of eight laps per car from a flying start, with the best of the eight laps qualifying for scoring.

In a 56-6 win, the Blazers caught two picks, which were caught by Austin Smith and Caeden Hood. Boca Christian had 5 different offensive players add to the scoreboard. Among them was Austin Smith with 2 touchdowns, Shane Sawyer with two, Stefan Kneffel with two, Caeden Hood with one, and Tommy Tucker also with one. The Blazers (4-3) look forward to their Senior Recognition night against Aukela Christian Academy on October 21 at 4 p.m.
