Florida Atlantic University’s Tech Runway® has selected its fifth and largest Venture class of startup and early-stage companies to participate in its business accelerator program.

• Representatives from 18 foreign consulates, Palm Beach County, and the Department of State’s Office of Foreign Missions (OFM) and Bureau of Diplomatic Security participated in a week-long program for foreign diplomats to learn about how to strengthen economic, commercial, scientific and cultural relations between the countries they represent and Palm Beach County.

• Eight local graduates are among 17 from the School District of Palm Beach County who have earned National Merit Scholarships from the college or university, the School District has announced. Each student will receive between $500 and $2,000 each year, for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution funding the scholarship, according to the news release written

• Governor Rick Scott signed HB 7109, which cuts taxes by $180 million for Florida families and businesses. This brings the total amount of taxes cut since Governor Scott has been in office to more than $6.7 billion.

• Boca Raton Regional Hospital today announced that it is the first hospital in Palm Beach County to offer the world’s smallest pacemaker for patients with bradycardia.

The Medtronic Micra® Transcatheter Pacing System (TPS) is a new type of heart device that provides patients with the most advanced pacing technology at one-tenth the size of a traditional pacemaker. The first procedure at Boca Regional was performed in late April by Martin Kloosterman, MD, an electrophysiologist and Director of the Lynn Heart & Vascular Institute.

•Boca Raton resident Dr. Patricia Cayne won her first title on the Jacoby Open Swiss Teams at the North American Bridge Championships. Cayne said in an interview that she had played bridge on and off for about forty years. (NABC) This was one of fifteen championship events held in Kansas City from March 9-19.

• Summer is approaching as the school year is coming to a close, and along with the fun in the sun, children are also able to take part in the annual summer reading program. In Boca Raton, however, it is not only the kids who encouraged to take part in summer reading, but residents of all ages.

• Caffe Luna Rosa, Delray Beach’s favorite beachfront restaurant, recently donated $1,000 to Steve Weagle’s annual Ride for the Red Cross. Weagle, the chief meteorologist for NewChannel 5, WPTV, stopped by the restaurant over lunchtime on Friday, June 2, to receive the donation during his five-day, four-county bicycle ride from Sebastian to Boca Raton, which raised close to $60,000.

• Three star tennis student-athletes from Lynn University have been selected to the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II At-Large Teams, as announced on Wednesday. Jean-Baptiste Mateo and Rosalie Willig were chosen to the second team while Grace Mpassy picks up third-team honors.

Community Eight Local Graduates Earn College-Based National Merit Scholarships

Local Second Grade Teacher Inspires "Good Panthers"

Del Prado second grade teacher, Melissa Pierce, and her Panther students have something to roar about. Ms. Pierce’s third annual “Good Panther” project was unveiled on June 1, as Panther students wrapped up their school-year.

Pierce’s project is a wonderful addition to the community by an outgoing teacher. This year marked the third edition of The Good Panther.

Ms. Pierce was motivated in 2015 to start her own STEAM project. STEAM projects integrate science, technology, engineering, art, and math into one program.

Ms. Pierce remarked, “Three years ago I knew I wanted to bring school spirit and offer our campus something special, exciting and educational. I began The Good Panther public art installation as a STEAM project with my second graders.”

The Good Panther project is a hands-on way of bringing some color to the Del Prado courtyard. The results are life-size fiberglass Florida Panthers, the Del Prado school mascot. Pierce applied for grants and scholarships, while also receiving some private donations.

“I applied for [funding] from Community groups like Kiwanis of Boca, Boca Museum of Art, The Home Depot, Delray Chamber of Commerce, and Menchies, and the Florida Panthers,” Pierce said.

The venture has widespread support. For example, Pierce received money from the Florida Panthers hockey club through the Hockey Scholars program - an NHL-run online educa-

tion site. The Panthers also sent their mascot “Stanley C. Panther” to the June 1 ceremony.

Each year Ms. Pierce assigns her students a new task in decorating the Panthers she is able to purchase.

Pierce stated, “The students design and paint each Panther to tell or teach what they've learned. Our first Panther in 2015 was influenced by the work of infamous Miami artist Arturo Brito.

Then, in 2016, the second Panther was influenced by my students' research on the Florida Everglades.”

This year, the young Panther students focused on a design influenced by different geometric and 2D shapes.

They also name the Panther. Each year, the class presents their Panther to the Del Prado community in a ceremony.

Pierce knows her students learn more than just the area of study.

“The students learn so much more than subject matter through this project.

Creativity, motor skills, confidence, visual learning, perseverance, collaboration, accountability, focus... As they persevered and stepped out of their comfort zone, they proudly saw their own progress and their self confidence enthusiastically grew.”

Ms. Pierce hopes to create a new panther every year until their donations run out. Hopefully, this will not be a problem. You can contact Melissa Pierce directly at melissa.pierce@palmbeachschools.org.

The Good Panther is a small stride in a big community. “Caitlin, Liberace, and Einstein are meant to bring an appreciation for art, school spirit, and learning to a campus courtyard that needed a little color and pizzazz.”

Eight local graduates are among 17 from the School District of Palm Beach County who have earned National Merit Scholarships from the college or university, the School District has announced.

Each student will receive between $500 and $2,000 each year, for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution funding the scholarship, according to the news release written by Kathy Burstein.

“Congratulations to all of Florida’s top scholars for winning National Merit Scholarships,” Governor Rick Scott said in a news release. “Florida students’ success is directly linked to our state’s great teachers. That is why we committed $480 million in our budget for a welldeserved pay raise for all Florida teachers.

It’s important that we reward our teachers for the success in Florida classrooms.”

This year, 182 colleges and universities are underwriting National Merit Scholarship awards through the National Merit Scholarship Program. Another group of National Merit Scholarship college-based awards will be announced in July. Winners of corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards and National Merit $2,500 scholarships have already been announced. Those winners can be found on the District’s website.

Florida’s students are among the nation’s best in pursuing rigorous goals, ranking first in Advance Placement test participation and third nationally in overall grades on the AP tests.

“These Florida students have

worked hard to earn this prestigious scholarship,” said Commissioner of Education Dr. Tony Bennett. “They have proven their readiness to move to the next level and I look forward to continued great success.”

More than 1.6 million high school juniors entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which serves as the initial screen for program entrants.

Semifinalists for the program include the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

FAU Tech Runway Announces its Fifth and Largest Class

Florida Atlantic University’s Tech Runway® has selected its fifth and largest Venture class of startup and early-stage companies to participate in its business accelerator program.

This year, four companies will receive a $25,000 non-equity grant, participate in a 16-week intensive boot camp, engage in a rigorous year-long mentoring program with a team of five accomplished business mentors, and will be provided a workspace for one year. The four companies are:

Videopura LLC is a video services company with patent-pending technologies to reduce the bandwidth necessary for video services.

Tap2Open LLC is a secure, convenient, and easy way for residents and guests to gain access to gated communities via smart devices. Tap2Open allows residents and invited guests enter a gated community or secured door at the push of a button on their smart phone or device.

Ridgeback Network Defense Inc. delivers enterprise network security by turning the tables on hackers, dynamically counter-engaging the adversary, causing them to absorb the expense of attack and eliminating them as a threat.

Hubspring Health is an innovative software company founded by physicians focused on solving several of the chronic problems plaguing our industry.

In addition, 16 more companies were awarded based on various tracks including, community, student and faculty.

This will give them many of the same

benefits as the prior four companies, minus the $25,000 grant. Six companies are still in the process of being selected and confirmed, however, the 11 companies already identified are: Two Degrees Inc.; ScaleWize; Land of Zorth; WAHspace; Bacon Boxes; SlideMap; PAPER; STAX; Gaming Frog; MMP Biopharma Inc.; and PQSecure Technologies LLC.

“A record number of companies entered the 2017 FAU Tech Runway Launch Competition. They significantly raised the bar, in terms of their quality and breadth represented,” said Rhys L. Williams, associate vice president for research and the managing director for FAU Tech Runway®. “Consequently, this year’s winning Venture Class will be expanded by 50 percent to 21 companies. After they complete our year-long program, many of these companies will no doubt make a profound impact upon the region’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.”

Under the purview of the FAU Division of Research, Tech Runway® is a public-private partnership formed to foster technology start-ups and earlystage companies. Since its inception in late 2014, 205 jobs and 76 internships have been created; 39 FAU students have been employed; 136 corporate partnerships have been created; more than $8 million in revenue has been earned; and more than $19 million investment capital has been raised.

“FAU Tech Runway serves as a core entrepreneurship hub for Florida Atlantic University and as a key resource for the regional technology eco-system,” said Daniel C. Flynn, Ph.D., FAU’s vice president for research. “As the program matures, it will continue to launch thriving, innovative companies that are ready for their next stage of growth, contributing to the university and the state’s economic vitality.”

Preparing for the 2017 Hurricane Season

It’s that time of year again.

Hurricane season officially began on June 1 and while South Florida has not been a huge target for the giant storms in recent years, experts are expecting an above-average season.

The City of Boca Raton has their own hurricane guide to help residents be prepared for possible storms this year. A major highlight is a 10-step plan which includes holding a family meeting, securing the home and gathering supplies.

Other information includes a supply kit checklist, map of evacuation zones, pet safety tips and what to do after a storm passes. It details everything that needs to be known in order for Boca Raton residents to safely make it through an approaching storm.

An important new tool used today that was not available in the past is social media.

“You can connect with us through social media,” Boca Raton Mayor Susan Haynie said. “It’s hard to imagine that during Wilma in 2005, social media wasn’t a factor in communication. The city has active Facebook and Twitter pages.”

Facebook and Twitter are useful ways for people in the path of a hurricane to stay updated on what is happening.

If there are power outages or television signals go out, everyone can use their phones to view continuous news from the City of Boca Raton.

Before this hurricane season even began, Tropical Storm Arlene became the first tropical storm of the year to form in the Atlantic Ocean. It was the first to do so in the month of April since 2003.

Including the formation of Arlene, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting there is a 70 percent chance that

there will be between 11 to 17 storms with winds reaching 39 mph or higher.

This is a slight step up from last year’s prediction of 10 to 16.

Five to nine of those predicted storms are expected to be hurricanes, while two to four are expected to become major hurricanes, which would mean winds of at least 111 mph.

Forecasters believe that the above-average season could be a result of a weaker El Niño, which is the cycle of warmer sea surface temperatures. Years with stronger El Niños will usually result is less storm development due to higher wind shear.

Even though it will be an aboveaverage season, that does not necessarily mean any storms will make landfall. A major hurricane has not made landfall in the United States since Hurricane Wilma passed through Florida in October 2005.

Residents are still urged to always be prepared during hurricane season however, as tropical storms and minor hurricanes can still cause a lot of damage and create dangerous situations.

Hurricane Matthew is an example of that as it never actually made landfall in Florida last year, however the impact of the outer bands caused damage and flooding across the east coast.

The state was also in the cone of error for many hours leading up to the storm’s approach to the state. If the storm made just a short shift to the left, it could have been a devastating hit.

Since a major hurricane has not passed through in over 11 years, that also means that many people who currently live in Boca Raton may not have every experienced the wrath of a hurricane before, so it is always suggested to create a plan and be prepared for the worst, as it is always better to be over prepared than underprepared.

Congratulations to the Graduates, Their Families

This is one of my favorite seasons – not because it signals the end of the cool weather and heralds the summer days but its time when one journey ends – at least in the education process.

Students are. Whether that is going to college, a community college or entering the workforce, it’s an important milestone.

I have delivered the moving on or graduation message at four of our schools in the last three weeks and I was moved by the joy and pride that filled those auditoriums.

In most of the cases, it was clear that the students are ready for the journey that lies ahead.

The Boca Raton Tribune extends heartfelt congratulations to graduating students at all our area high schools and to all those who moved on – whether from fifth grade to middle school or from middle to high school. And let us not forget about our “small fries” as well as our homeschool students who are graduating.

I would be remiss if I did not recognize the hard working staff at

Daughter of Zion Junior Academy in Delray Beach. I delivered the commencement address to the eighth graders and four days later, I was in the audience as several dozen precocious angels said goodbye to kindergarten and headed to “Big school.”

What was impressive was the level of promise I saw in those students.

I have been exposed to a few Head Start programs over the years and I am easily impressed when our babies display that they have mastered the basic alphabet and counting. However, I am yet to see another group of students who left me marveling as those DOZJA students.

They could count and knew their colors in Spanish, they knew antonyms and synonyms and they knew their bible verses. And they were so impressive… I have no doubt those students are ready for whatever academic hurdles that lies ahead.

As I told the graduates and audience at all four events, it took a community – in some cases – to help the graduates achieve this goal. Parents pro-

vided nurturing support and at times, the occasional dose of tough love. Mentors played their role and friends and family members offered encouragement.

But it was the teachers who did the lifting. They imparted valuable knowledge and deserves a salute.

I was quite humbled at one of the schools, which had the largest homeless population in the county. As I watched those students walked across the stage, it was obvious to me that their parents did the best they could, given their circumstances.

Many of those students faced hurdles or challenges every day before they arrived at school. But somehow, some of them seemed to have wings and they just soared over the obstacles and challenges that crossed their path.

It is such a wonderful gift and one that never fails to amaze me. And although, not all of them may have had wings that helped them to soar over obstacles - each and every one of them had feet - feet that they used to climb, bit by bit every day, one day at a time and yes, they all got

there. They all achieved their goals!

As I ended each presentation, I left with them my usual parting advice – at least a few: • Never stop learning. It’s a lifelong process.

• Believe you matter … I am sure you have learned that even a 13- or 14-yearold can make a difference in the world.

Personally, I believe that all children can make a difference in a world—someone just has to guide them on how to start – and they got their start there at their local school.

• Don’t be afraid to speak out and help make things better. But listen, too.

• And remember the golden rule: Treat others how you want to be treated. Be respectful.

They do not seek any praise but their skill and dedication to the task of educating the students is enormous. On behalf of the community, I say “Thank you”.

Be Informed!

It is amazing what the current age has brought to humankind, and continues to provide. In a matter of just a few years, information truly exploded, in bringing new tools which accelerate the acquisition of important new facts, especially what can be beneficial to all humans.

Sane persons desire to be informed about new trends, about dangers which may be affecting the human race, concerning the threat of terrorist organizations around the globe, about physical maladies which may be spreading world-wide, and pose a threat to everyone wherever anyone may be situation on earth.

Information is most vital. People need to lead informed lives. And today

we all have the means of getting information, retaining it, and adding more to it in terms of advances or declines of the same. All humans need to be up-to-date about what is crucial for their daily operation and, especially, for their very survival on earth.

We have reached a time in our lives when it is possible to carry the whole world in our hands, as far as having an operative cellular phone which can provide all the basic information one needs about weather conditions, crimes in the neighborhood, threats to one’s security, national and international happenings, and all else that gives one the opportunity to be truly prepared for whatever may come next, as well as to act in the light of what’s taking place right now!

On account of the difficult days in which we live (despite the many advances that have taken place to improve the quality of our life), we still need to take the initiative in seeking whatever will truly help us to live with confidence on account of the information we are constantly being made aware of.

Even with respect to weather changes, we need to be prepared with information we secure about conditions that may bring storms, tornadoes, or other potential dangerous situations, based on scientific methods and devices that can help us intelligently to anticipate such alterations.

Sadly, there are many people who don’t want to be bothered with the information that is always available. They

consider a waste of time to check the newspapers, to watch television news, to talk intelligently with neighbors and friends about conditions that surround us, wherever we may be.

Let us all be more proactive in seeking information with greater diligence, and acting on it accordingly. If that is an activity which is repulsive to you, for some reason, at least find some reliable friend or relative who can keep you well informed, so that changes which are inevitable to occur won’t meet you by surprise, but will allow you to make the necessary plans to avoid the bad consequences of conditions you may have to encounter, whether you like it or not.

Whatever be your way, be informed!

Caffe Luna Rosa Donates $1,000 Mayor Haynie Proclaims This To Steve Weagle’s Ride for the Red Year’s Summer Reading Program Cross

Caffe Luna Rosa, Delray Beach’s favorite beachfront restaurant, recently donated $1,000 to Steve Weagle’s annual Ride for the Red Cross.

Weagle, the chief meteorologist for NewChannel 5, WPTV, stopped by the restaurant over lunchtime on Friday, June 2, to receive the donation during his five-day, four-county bicycle ride from Sebastian to Boca Raton, which raised close to $60,000.

He accepted the donation from Caffe Luna Rosa partners Aaron Hallyburton and John Gergen, and Catering Manager Jenny Melisiotis, during a live broadcast.

Summer is approaching as the school year is coming to a close, and along with the fun in the sun, children are also able to take part in the annual summer reading program. In Boca Raton, however, it is not only the kids who encouraged to take part in summer reading, but residents of all ages.

Boca Raton Mayor Susan Haynie announced this year’s summer reading season to be June 5 through August 11.

The national theme will be “Build a Better World,” following last year’s theme of “Exercise Your Mind, Read!”

Over 100 classes and educational programs will be offered to the locals who participate in the reading program at the Boca Raton Public Library. Books will also be made available through the library’s partnership with the Florida Department of State’s Division of Library and Information Services.

Mayor Haynie believes that this is a great way to help students continue learning even when they are out of school for the summer.

“Public libraries play a critical role in providing a bridge for students’ education and academic skills over the summer months and thereby prevent the ‘summer slide,’ when, it has been proven students may lose many of the educational achievements made during the previous school year,” Mayor Haynie proclaimed.

Summer reading has usually only been associated with children, but this initiative stresses that for adults, reading can have numerous benefits, such as learning and improving memory.

It is also important for adults to set an example for their children by participating alongside them. If they are able to see their parents and family reading as well, it could provide extra incentive or create an enjoyable reading environment where families can take the time to read and learn together.

Boca Raton residents who wish to take part in this year’s national program will be able to sign up starting on June 5. This can be done at either the Boca Raton Public Library or the Spanish River Library, as well as online.

There are over 10 million people in the U.S. diagnosed with osteoporosis and just about 50% of all women between 45-70 years of age suffer from it to a certain degree. Osteoporosis means porous bones and is a condition where the bones become weakened and brittle and may easily fracture. A precursor to osteoporosis is osteopenia or low bone mass, which currently affects about 35 million persons in the U.S. Although it is fairly common in the U.S., there are many areas of the world where osteoporosis is much less prevalent due mainly to better diets and more active lifestyles. Contrary to popular belief, osteoporosis is not a disease that only affects older women.

It afflicts millions of men and it is even becoming more common in younger persons. In fact, osteoporosis is now responsible for about 1.5 million fractures annually. Do not despair, there are some simple things you can do to prevent this potentially devastating disease. Below are some recommendations that can help you maintain or increase bone strength naturally, without the use of drugs.

• Eat more vegetables, especially leafy greens, onions and cabbage which are rich in bone friendly essential vitamins and minerals. Make sure your vegetables are fresh and preferably organic. Fruits lower in sugar, such as berries, are beneficial as well.

• Eat enough high quality protein, such as fish, turkey, free range chicken/eggs, and grass fed meat. It will supply the body with needed amino acids to build a strong bone matrix.

• Consume essential fats such as Omega 3 and Omega 6. Good sources are all nuts, seeds, and avocados. Try to eliminate consuming processed/heated oils such as corn, soy, canola or safflower. Also, consider taking an Omega 3 supplement such as krill oil.

• Avoid sodas and refined sugars as much as possible; they deplete your bones of calcium. Do not smoke; cigarrette smoking is one your bones’ biggest enemies.

• Avoid chronic stress which can increase your cortisol levels. Over time, elevated cortisol levels will increase bone loss and weaken them. Try to relax with music or drink a calming tea such as linden or lavender.

• During sleep is when we produce a surge of growth hormones. It is one of the key players in bone building. Sleep well, it is vital to rebuild and maintain strong bones.

• Hormones can help, such as estrogens and progesterones, but make sure they are bioidentical, or chemically identical to the hormones made in the body. Always consult a physician knowledgable in bioidentical hormone replacement before using them.

The Lynn Cancer Institute Run for the Ribbons has been an annual tradition in Boca Raton since 2011. Runners of all ages gather early in the morning outside of the Lynn Cancer Institute to begin the race. The sixth running of the race took place last Sunday.

In the morning, there was a group workout, multiple nutritional options, and great hospitality from Hospital employees and volunteers. This year, the 5k race and one mile run featured over 800 participants. The course stretched from the Institute, just off of Glades Road, down through the Old Floresta Historic District by Palmetto Park Road.

All proceeds from the race benefit the Lynn Cancer Institute’s League of Ribbons. Darci McNally, the Institute’s Director of Support Services and Community Outreach, is tasked with making everything happen. She stated, “All of the proceeds go to the League of Ribbons, the fund at the Institute for patient service enhancements.

This provides gift cards for the patients, including gas and groceries for patients who need it.”

The Lynn Cancer Institute makes massive strides in the Boca Raton community. Boca’s own complex is one of the largest cancer centers in South Florida, treating more than 3,000 patients each year. The facility employs more than 20 full-time oncology physicians and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

Thanks to fundraisers like Run for the Ribbons, cancer patients’ battles grow a little easier.

All of the proceeds from the run go directly to the League of Ribbons fund, helping Boca Raton fight cancer one step at a time.

Palm Beach County accommodates 7 million tourists a year (in addition to 1.5 million residents) it is clear Palm Beach County. Is there congestion? Of course there is.

To that end, the Palm Beach Metropolitan Planning Organization (PBMPO), Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council (TCRPC) and Pam Tran are collaborating with state, county, and your municipal leaders to update our regional transportation system to accommodate our residents and visitors by planning for the allocation of available federal, state and county funding.

As a member of the PBMPO and TCRPC I am able to represent residents of our city to ensure our needs are being considered and addressed.

One project to do this was recently previewed by our residents whereby the county is seeking to “reenvision” the US-1 corridor.

An in-depth multimodal study, with the TCRPC, PBMPO and Palm Tran holding a series of community meetings, started in Boca Raton and will ultimately conclude in several months in Jupiter.

The 42-mile FDOT roadway stretches through 14 municipalities and is an important component to our county’s economic vitality with over 156,000 residents relying upon US-1 to travel to work each day.

The study’s goals are to: a. Establish a vision for US-1 as a multimodal corridor; and b. Determine how we can implement enhanced transit with continuous bicycle and pedestrian friendly facilities.

Even with construction of I-95

and the Florida Turnpike, US-1 continues to be a vital connector serving downtown areas in the eastern core of the county, distributing people to businesses, neighborhoods and important community activities.

The current period of research and public input will require the study team to hold five additional community meetings, ending in October with the final meeting to solicit public input in north county (Juno Beach, Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens). This will be followed in the fourth quarter by a period of public outreach (charrettes and stakeholder interviews).

A final report will be prepared early next year with another round of public outreach to present the final recommendations in the spring of 2018.

Our city has also sought the input of the TCRPC to assist in the redevelopment of the area between Florida Atlantic University and US-1. Taken together, these projects will have longterm impacts on how our city continues to evolve (especially as FAU continues to mature and raise its game).

Along the 20th Street corridor (and beyond), we are looking to create an identity for the area and creating a more appropriate entrance to the university.

This is an exciting opportunity to envision the future of travel in our region. Mobility through non-automobile travel promises to be an important ingredient of the plan, as incorporating planned mobility and complete street urban design in our master plan for the areas in and around the university.

get her into combat shape, but she soon screws up and is punished by being assigned to dog kennel cleanup duty. It is there she meets her destiny: a surly, violent dog named Rex. Rex is gifted with an extraordinary sense of smell, so he is trained to be a bomb-sniffing dog in the deserts of Iraq.

On one hand Meghan and her dog are heroic and self-sacrificing. On the other hand it is hard to romanticize a war so misbegotten, so destructive to both sides with no clear gain either way.

“Meghan Leavey” and her dog are true heroes, but what happens when they have to go back to civilian life? This movie is directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, who made the compassionate documentary “Black Fish.” Its heart is in the right place but I can’t help but feel melancholy about such a pointless, unwinnable war.

After the show Marilyn Wick presented us all with beautiful flowers for Mother’s Day.

My daughter, Melanie flew down to spend Mother’s Day with me and we traveled to Naples and Fort Myers for the weekend. We visited the Edison and Ford Estates and had lunch in Naples and met up with old friends for a reunion dinner in Fort Myers.

sports Boca Raton FC win second successive NPSL away match

Boca Raton FC defeated Naples United FC 3-1 tonight at Golden Gate High School in Naples, Florida. Shadi Harb had a brace and Giovani DiMauro added a third to pace Boca Raton. It was the second successive win for Boca Raton in NPSL play, both victories coming away from home.

After the home team started quickly with two early chances, Boca Raton gradually assumed control of the match in the middle of the first half. Head Coach Athirson made a tactical change shifting Justin Wilbanks into midfield and moving Jason Fitzgerald to right back. The remainder of the half with Wilbanks serving as the focal point of Boca Raton’s play in central midfield, several chances were created with intricate passing and movement. The best chance of the half for Boca Raton to fell Wilbanks who put a shot on frame that was cleared off the goal line by Naples United’s Gilbert Fab.

Despite the chances Boca Raton failed to register a goal in the first half, but early in the second half Wilbanks was taken down in the area and Harb scored his first goal calmly from the penalty spot.

Boca Raton had a few chances to double

the lead but were unable to take advantage and Naples began applying pressure.

Striker Juan Buzan was particularly active for Naples United who were pressing high up the pitch.

Rafael Campos was able to convert a penalty from spot to equalize for Naples United about midway through the second half. It was the first goal of the NPSL campaign for Naples United.

Following this goal, Naples high-press combined with Boca Raton high defensive line yielded a few more chances for the home side but goalkeeper Leo Tavares was up the task making two spectacular saves charging off the line as a sweeper keeper.

Moments after Tavares second spectacular save Harb found himself space and fended off two Naples defenders and placed the ball past keeper Cristian Blanco to restore the Boca Raton lead. DiMauro made it three before full time when he was able to convert a oneon-one opportunity on a counter attack.

With the victory Boca Raton remains six points off of the NPSL Sunshine Conference lead currently held by Miami United.

Lynn’s Tennis Trio Tabbed CoSIDA Academic All-Americans

Three star tennis student-athletes from Lynn University have been selected to the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II At-Large Teams, as announced on Wednesday.

Jean-Baptiste Mateo and Rosalie Willig were chosen to the second team while Grace Mpassy picks up third-team honors.

On the men's side, Mateo becomes just the second CoSIDA Academic All-American in program history, joining Stefano Papaleo's second-team selection in 1996. He finished the year with a 3.66 cumulative GPA as an international business management major.

Mateo pieced together one of the best singles campaigns in program history, boasting a perfect 23-0 record and claiming ITA All-America status as the 11th-ranked player in the country.

He is the only Fighting Knight since Lynn joined the NCAA in 1997 to produce 23 singles wins in a season. The Marseilles, France native secured 20 of his victories at the No. 2 position with three at the top flight while winning all seven matchups against nationallyranked opponents. Mateo also garnered Sunshine State Conference Singles First Team accolades, the first of his career.

Willig and Mpassy notch the fifth and sixth CoSIDA Academic All-America selections for the women's tennis program and are the first to do so for the Fighting Knights since 2010.

Willig's second-team nod is the program's highest since Dragana Ilic was a first teamer in 2006.

Willig finished her MBA in marketing this spring with a 4.0 GPA to go along with a 3.87 undergraduate mark at Lynn as an international business management student.

Willig concluded her successful four-year stint in the Blue and White as

a five-time ITA All-American, earning the honor in doubles the past three years while claiming a singles selection in 2015 and 2017. The Stuttgart, Germany native finishes the year slotted No. 15 in the singles national rankings and fourth in the doubles rankings.

Playing primarily at the No. 2 position in the Fighting Knights' lineup, Willig logged a perfect 17-0 singles record on the season while going 17-2 at No. 1 doubles.

She also became the second player in program history to be an eight-time All-SSC selection, earning league honors in both singles and doubles all four years at Lynn.

Mpassy graduated in three years at Lynn, producing a 3.98 cumulative GPA as an event management major. After missing ITA All-America plaudits last year by just one spot, Mpassy secured her first career selection this year as the No. 8-ranked singles player in the nation. She recorded a 17-2 singles mark on the year, including a 9-2 tally at the top flight, and was 4-2 vs. nationally-ranked opponents.

Mpassy was also a double honoree from the SSC, marking a spot on the first team in both singles and doubles.

Maryville (Mo.) University senior wrestler Nate Rodriguez and Saint Leo University senior golfer Marie Coors were tabbed the Male and Female At-Large Academic All-Americans of the Year, respectively.

The at-large program for the CoSIDA Academic All-America® program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo for both men and women; bowling, crew and field hockey for women; and volleyball and wrestling for men.
