• Palm Beach County Commissioners have voted to decriminalize marijuana.

The new ordinance makes possession of 20 grams or less of marijuana a civil infraction.

It gives law enforcement the option to issue a $100 citation to the offender rather than arresting them. As part of the ordinance, if a person is not able to pay the citation, they’ll be able to work it off through community service. The motion passed 4 to 1, with commissioner Valeche the lone dissenting vote.

• Atlanta-based Newell Rubbermaid Inc. will buy rival Boca Raton, Fla.-based Jarden Corp. for $13.21 billion in cash and stock, creating a $16 billion consumer-goods company. Jarden is the parent company of more than 120 consumer products brands, including Bicycle Playing Cards, Mr.Coffee, Coleman, Jostens, Oster, Rawlins, Sunbeam, Seal-a-Meal and Yankee Candle. Community Sun Capital Partners Lifetime Contribution to Boca Helping Hands Reaches $500,000

Since its inception, the Sun Capital Partners Foundation has been able to support more than 250 organizations in meaningful and compassionate pursuits. Through the dedication of their enthusiastic donors, they have been able to support the good work of local nonprofits and educational institutions, while also responding to urgent relief

efforts stemming from events such as Hurricane Sandy and the Haiti earthquake.

"Tonight's a night where we celebrate Sun Capital Partners," said James Gavrilos, executive director of Boca Helping Hands.

"We would not be where we are today if it wasn't for their generous donations."

Every year, Sun Capital Partners Foundation picks three to four nonprofit organizations in Boca Raton to donate to, and for

the past six years, Boca Helping Hands has been one of them.

"Over the past six years we have seen Boca Helping Hands grow," said Sun Capital Partners, Inc CEO Rodger Krouse.

"They started as a place to simply give food to the needy in Boca Raton, to now providing job mentorship, job training, and helps the kids of the community with their BHH Backpack program as well."

The money donated by Sun Capital Partners goes to the Boca Helping Hands general fund, which funds its programs, such as Esperanza Catering, its catering program that benefits people in need of work experience.

Another one of its programs, the CDL Commercial Truck Driver Training, has

helped numerous people whom found themselves out of work. The program teaches students what to expect in the driving test, and gives them lessons on truck driving.

"The CDL Training was a wonderful experience," said Tim Samuels, a graduate of the CDL Training. "I needed someone to teach me all the useful information to be able to pass the test and be able to find a job, Boca Helping Hands did that for me."

"Our collaboration with The Sun Capital Partners Foundation is a model for all interaction between the corporate and nonprofit worlds." added Gavrilos. "Their commitment to ease poverty and hunger in our community is inspiring. Not only has the Foundation provided needed funding, Sun Capital has also committed its corporate resources. Its employees have organized food drives and volunteered their time at Boca Helping Hands, working in the soup kitchen or filling up pantry bags in the warehouse.

This type of corporate responsibility is exactly what America needs during these trying times.”

Home For Christmas This is the plan for a lot of people who are far from their homes; whether they are traveling because of work, living in another country, or on a trip with no set date to return. There have been many songs and movies made about this topic, about the wish to be home for Christmas. Everyone wants to be home, with their loved ones for Christmas! Joy and happiness take over the hearts of those who arrive to spend this time with their special someone, their family, and their friends.

However, there are those who don’t make it. They either decide not to go, or receive days off at the last minute and rush to find plane tickets, which sell out quickly for the season, and are just impossible to find.

Some people don’t make plans ahead of time and become frustrated. Others have major obstacles that don’t allow them to spend Christmas at home. There are even those who see their dreams go down the drain due to weather conditions, and that brings frustration and deception.

This week, the snow storms here in the United States have turned into a nightmare for many people, threatening to keep them from making it home for Christmas on account of canceled flights and blocked roads.

But for those of us here at home, who are far from our native land, and many times

away from our families, we try to spend Christmas with our friends, and each year we look for those who are alone, with no family nearby. In fact, to have a full house for the holidays has become a tradition for the Heizer Family. We love having our relatives and friends over during Christmas time.

We enjoy decorating the house, in fact; we’ve made building the Christmas tree a tradition, where each year we add new ornaments. Some ornaments follow us for over 29 years, which we kept from our very first Christmas tree. We also have souvenirs the children made in their early years; we have three children and our oldest is 22. Some years ago we added a Nativity scene to our tradition. The Nativity Scene is made of olive tree wood from Israel, and we have decided to have it displayed at the home in which the family will gather that year.

Other than celebrating the birth of Jesus, another thing that makes me really happy about Christmas is that my birthday is the next day!

But you know something? Everyone who is reading this article is not at home yet; and I hope we won’t be for this Christmas or many more to come.

Let me explain myself: heaven is our home.

We were made to live in heaven, not here

on Earth. This year, a great friend of mine went home. Before we got married, my wife’s brother and her mother also went there. How about you? Do you have a loved one in Heaven? Did someone you love go there this year?

As we remember those who already went, we become saddened by their absence; we no longer have the interaction with them that we liked so much. In the case of this friend, and my wife’s relatives, it’s no different. But when we remember that they are in heaven, that they are already home for Christmas, we are filled with joy because we have the conviction that one day we will see them again. The Bible is very clear about this; we will have an encounter again, and recognize each other. I can imagine what a celebration that will be – our first Christmas at home!

Many times, those we love depart without even leaving a message. Many times we don’t have the opportunity to be with them for a last conversation. This is not the kind of parting where you can leave a farewell note. Have you ever thought about that?

What would you say before leaving to go to your true home?

I attempted to write a list of what I would say to my wife and children:

1. It is worth it to follow Christ.

Always put God in first place

2. Always put family ahead of

everything else

3. Cherish friends, not things

4. Build bridges and never walls

5. Be concerned about others; be

“God’s agent” for them

6. Never stop dreaming Perhaps I would also say: “Once Flamengo, always Flamengo!” (my favorite soccer team) Unfortunately there are people who get lost along the way and never arrive at their destination. There are people who are always looking for a “seat on the plane”, using the wrong “travel agency”. Some people live in the middle of a storm, and that makes it impossible to arrive. Others think their home is here on Earth and they invest everything in the wrong place.

For those people, I want to assure you that there is “room on the plane” and that the path to the “eternal home” is available to you. There is no cost. The price has already been paid by Him, whose birthday we celebrate and call it Christmas. He is “the way” for you to get to your eternal home.

I don’t know when I am going home, but I am ready to go. I hope to see you there.

The Power of Encouragement Every human needs encouragement, not just at times when that ingredient is lacking in an individual’s life, but also when its reality is also fully noticeable in a joyous and productive life! Even those who possess it, need to renew their supply for the times when its level is low, or becomes nonexistent!

The world can turn into a better place for all inhabitants if individuals, everywhere in the globe, would attempt to encourage their neighbors and peers to use the talents they already have to develop new skills, and to recognize that nothing is totally impossible to them.

to do anywhere, all the time, knowing also that countless others will benefit from your accomplishments, once they understand that they can be applied to their experience so as to impact positively their continuing journey!

Don’t withhold information that others need, and can enjoy for their own advancement in the sectors where they are capable of making valid contributions from which many others can also derive strategies, and even tools, capable of advancing them into grater achievement!

The world has too many agents of evil who exploit the poor, and others whom they lead into deprivation. It’s time that a cam-

paign be started and promoted to challenge, encourage, and develop a new nucleus of promoters of good will, doers of good deeds, winners that may not take all the prizes but contribute to the advancement of several more winners, not for personal advantage, but for the good of many more!

What needs to start in a human mind and heart can advance into neighborhood, families, districts, cities, states, nations, and so on throughout the entire world. Just as a fire can spread, causing enormous devastation to people and places, all acts of kindness and good will can also encompass vast territories where its dwellers and its environment can benefit!

No one can do it all alone but cooperatively; great projects can advance and make an indelible difference for the good of many. And this cannot be limited only to one time; it can and must be perpetuated ceaselessly, for human need is ever present, and tends to augment much faster than it can be contained!

Never minimize the power of encouragement. You can utilize it in ways far beyond your comprehension, with positive consequences to countless lives that can also duplicate their effect through what they can attempt with others, through the example you’ve set!

Herewith at this happy time of year, a few confessions from my beating heart: Eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York’s Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial Sept. 21, 1897. The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church has since become history’s most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies, and other editorials, and on posters and stamps.

“Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.

“Papa says, ‘If you see it in THE SUN it’s so.’

“Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

I have no freaking clue who Nick and Jessica are. I see them on the cover of People and Us constantly when I am buying my dog biscuits and kitty litter.

I often ask the checkers at the grocery stores. They never know who Nick and Jessica are either. Who are they? Will it change my life if I know who they are and why they have broken up? Why are they so important? I don’t know who Lindsay Lohan is, either, and I do not care at all about Tom Cruise’s wife.

Am I going to be called before a Senate committee and asked if I am a subversive? Maybe, but I just have no clue who Nick and Jessica are. Is this what it means to be no longer young. It’s not so bad.

Next confession: I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don’t feel threatened. I don’t feel discriminated against. That’s what they are: Christmas trees. It doesn’t bother me a bit when people say, “Merry Christmas” to me.

I don’t think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn’t bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu. If people want a creche, it’s just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

I don’t like getting pushed around for being a Jew and I don’t think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can’t find it in the Constitution and I don’t like it being shoved down my throat.

You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship Nick and Jessica and we aren’t allowed to worship God as we understand Him?

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

I guess that’s a sign that I’m getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where Nick and Jessica came from and where the America we knew went to.

Middle School Students Names to Scholastics News Kids Press Corps

Loggers' Run Middle School Eighth-grader, Benjamin Schiller, has been named to the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps, the country’s oldest and largest student reporting program.

Schiller will join a team of young reporters who will report “news for kids, by kids” with coverage of current events, breaking news, entertainment stories and sports events from their hometowns and on the national stage. This new team also will carry out a long-standing tradition of covering the presidential election, reporting on stories from the campaign trail to Election Day.

Schiller is one of only three kids chosen from Florida, and the only one south of Orlando. He is currently working on his first article for Scholastic, about habitat protection issues in the Everglades.

According to the website, For more than 15 years, the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps has delivered news to classrooms nationwide. Stories by the kid reporters appear in select issues of Scholastic classroom magazines, which are read by more than 25 million students nationwide and are available online at www.scholastic.com/news.

FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing Receives $1.3 Million Grant

Florida Atlantic University’s Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center operated by FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing has received a three-year, $1.3 million grant from the Administration on Aging (AoA), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, for a project titled “Bridging the Gap: Providing Specialized Dementia Care & Supportive Services through Community Partnerships.” FAU’s Green Memory and Wellness Center also received an additional $100,000 from Louis and Anne Green in support of the work on this special project.

The objective of this new project is to expand and adapt existing evidence-based services and supportive programs of a university-based, dementia capable system to meet identified gaps in services to targeted populations. FAU’s Green Memory and Wellness Center will work in partnership with the Palm Beach County Department of Community Services, Division of Senior Services, Artis Senior Living in Boca Raton, Fla., and Santa Ana Circle also in Boca Raton, Fla. “Our faculty are at the forefront of research and best practices in care for individuals who have Alzheimer’s disease and other related disorders,” said Marlaine Smith, Ph.D., R.N., dean and professor and Helen K. Persson Eminent Scholar in FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing. “We are so proud of their many contributions and accomplishments. This grant and matching gift from Mr. and Mrs. Green is a testament to their groundbreaking work in this field, and we are most grateful for the support we have received for this project.”

María de los Ángeles Ordóñez, DNP, ARNP/GNP-BC, director of FAU’s Green Memory and Wellness Center, is the principal investigator of the grant and will work alongside Debra Hain, Ph.D., ARNP/ GNP-BC, co- investigator and associate professor in FAU’s College of Nursing.

“We are so thankful to receive this important grant from the Administration on Aging and the matching gift from Mr. and Mrs. Green who have been longtime supporters of their namesake,” said Ordóñez.

“This important award and matching gift will enable us to take our dementia-specific, nurse-managed model of care into medically underserved communities who are in great need of these services.”

access to dementia-specific, person/ family-centered programs with the aim of transforming existing models of care, support, education and community outreach.

Program objectives include providing and facilitating dementia-specific care coordination services for community-residing older adults with moderate to severe AD and related dementias (ADRD) living alone or with a caregiver; facilitating healthcare services that address physical, cognitive and mental health needs of homebound aging individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities with or at risk of ADRD; and establishing, cultivating, and sustaining trusting relationships that encourage disclosure of caregiver needs.

The project team also will develop and implement dementia-specific care “Trainthe-Trainer” programs for healthcare professionals and direct care staff of individuals with ADRD and their caregivers.

“We expect to develop and distribute products to enhance program marketing, outreach, and sustainability of the programs and services we will be providing,” said Hain. “The success of this program is intended to meet the critical care needs of our growing vulnerable, culturally diverse aging ADRD population.”

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States affecting 5.3 million people, and the fifth leading cause of death for those age 65 and older. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the number of Americans with AD and other dementias will grow each year as the size and proportion of the U.S. population age 65 and older continue to increase. In 2015, AD and other dementias cost the nation an estimated $226 billion and by 2050, these costs could rise as high as $1.1 trillion.

FAU Presents Exhibition About DIRT

Dirt, the unclean stuff that gets under your nails, also inspires art. “DIRT: Yuta Suelo Udongo Tè” is a group exhibition curated by artist Onajide Shabaka featuring many South Florida artists. The exhibition will be on view at the University Galleries, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus from Friday, Jan. 22 to Saturday, March 5, 2016. An opening reception will be in the Ritter Art Gallery on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 6:30 p.m.

The exhibition title refers to the different ways that diverse cultures interpret dirt, not only physically, but also spiritually and symbolically. The exhibition includes site-specific installations, sculpture, photography, paintings, drawings and mixed-media works.

The inspiration for this exhibition dates to 1999 when artist and curator Onajide Shabaka visited Ely, Minn. Attracted to the area’s vibrant red oxide dirt, Shabaka saw a connection between it and elements of the West African Yoruba religion, particularly the deity Orisha Oggun, the god of minerals associated with iron and industry.

Shabaka’s subsequent research led to his recognition that responses to dirt vary widely across the world.

“We are excited to present this exhibition about DIRT to the South Florida community,” said Rod Faulds, director of the University Galleries at FAU. “Investigating how diverse cultures interpret this fundamental substance aligns with our mission here at the University Galleries, where we seek to understand differing points of view through art. We are also pleased to support

South Florida artists, particularly Onajide Shabaka, who has long been a stalwart of the area’s art community.”

Artists in the exhibition include Dona Altemus; Robert Chambers; William Cordova; Edouard Duval Carrié; Veronica Scharf Garcia; Mark Hahn; Alette Simmons Jimenez; Kim Nicolini; Lori Nozick; David Rohn; Ralph Provisero; Yanira Collado; Debra Wilk and Jovan Karlo Villalba.

There will be a public program to complement the exhibition on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. It will include a panel discussion which will include Edward Petuch, Ph.D., FAU professor of geology, along with a series of readings by writers and poets John Dufresne, Elizabeth Jacobson and Geoffrey Philp, and the FAU creative writing team who have focused on the topic of dirt. The discussion will be organized by awardwinning poet Michael Hettich. “Take it, feel it, pass it on,” was the motto of Mr. Hector, a much-loved teacher at a boy’s private school in northern England, 1986.

Mr. Hector, played by Colin McPhillamy, is the central character of “The History Boys,” an award-winning play by Alan Bennett, running through Jan. 3 at Palm Beach Dramaworks, 201 Clematis St., West Palm Beach.

While “History Boys” is set in a specific time and place, its thoughts on education and the art and science of teaching are universal.

Mr. Hector is nearing the end of his career and retirement ate age 60, and set in his eccentric ways. The school’s headmaster (Rob Donohoe) is concerned that the school is lagging behind in candidates for prestigious universities such as Oxford and Cambridge.

The boys in Mr. Hector’s class are preparing themselves to take those all-important tests.

To shake things up, the Headmaster brings in a younger teacher, Irwin. (Cliff Burgess).

Irwin is a radical, contrary hotshot who presents opposing views of history. In the middle ground is Mrs. Lintott (Angie Radosh) a longtime teacher and simmering feminist.

Dakin (Nathan Stark) is the smartest kid in class and everyone knows it. He is the

teacher’s pet and even rides on the back of Mr. Hector’s motorcycle.

The rest of the class is representative of common types. Crowther (Jelanni Alladin) is the bright token black guy. Akthar (Colin Acercion) is quiet and studious. Lockwood (Kristian Bikic) stands out with his bright red sneakers. Everyone else wears black tie-ups.

Rudge (Mike Magliocca) is a jock and not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Timms (Matthew Minor) is the pudgy guy and Posner (John Evans Reese) is the overtly gay guy. Scripps (Kyle Branzel) does double duty as pianist, accompanying and singing along with the other boys.

“History Boys” is a nearly perfect ensemble on an amazing, ever-changing, interlocking set by Victor Becker, with components deftly moved by the actors themselves.

We’ll give no spoilers here, but something bad happens in Act Two that changes the lives of Mr. Hector and Irwin and profoundly affects all the boys.

“History Boys” is a moving, provocative work that might get you thinking which teachers most affected your life. I know it did me.

Tiger Bay Club With Speaker Saied Shemirani This month the speaker at Tiger Bay Club’s luncheon at City Fish Market was Saied Shemirani who spoke about the the state of terror in Iran and explained the Islamic Republic Constitution and his goals of establishing a parliamentary system by dismantling the Islamic Government in Iran.

His topic, Iran from Monarchy to Mullahs drew a fairly large crowd and tight security from PBSO. He took many questions from the audience.

Christmas: The Most Difficult Time of the Year While the classic carol may declare that Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, it doesn’t always feel that way, does it? Though the holidays usher in heaps of happiness and celebration, they can also be an especially difficult time if you are lonely or hurting. The reflective nature of the season has a way of magnifying hardships that seem more manageable the rest of the year.

When the Christmas blues strike, they can make you want to pull away from the bustle of the season and keep to yourself. Resist that urge. The people around you are there for a reason. Not only can they encourage you when you are feeling down, but the way they see you handling the difficulties in your life can help them handle whatever they are facing in theirs.

With that in mind, here are three ways to reclaim joy and share the strength within you this holiday season: Borrow from Others – When you start feeling discouraged, lean on the faith of others in your life. Your faith is like a gas tank. Sometimes your tank runs low, but at just the right moment, God brings people around you who have full tanks. You can borrow from their reserves. If you surround yourself with strong, faithful friends and family, they’ll be there to step in when you need them.

Part of the reason God created the church was to give you a circle of likeminded people willing to come alongside you during hard times. If you aren’t part of a local, biblically based church, I encourage you to find one. You need a community of people

who will rejoice with you in good times and lend you their strength when yours falters.

Be a Willing Witness – How you handle hardships can be an incredible witness to other people. Everyone you know is going to face failures, doubts, relationship problems, health issues and other circumstances that have the potential to knock them off course. When you show strength in the face of such situations, they will notice – and they will want to know how you do it. They will become curious about your faith. Allow yourself to be vulnerable enough to let your trials be seen and used by others.

Turn Pain into Purpose – God works all things together for the good of those who love him (Romans 8:28): all things – even the layoffs, the rebellious kids, the break ups and the foreclosures. He is constantly weaving every circumstance you face into a beautiful tapestry. Every pain serves a greater purpose. Choose to walk through your painful times in a state of awareness and God will show you what he wants to do through them.

Merry Christmas to you! I pray that it will be a wonderful time of joy and celebration with the loved ones in your life.

Mice in the house (A Christmas Story) You wouldn’t think that a Jewish man at my stage would still vividly recall a Christmas Eve which could not have occurred at all; but I do.

Mom, Dad, infant brother Bill and I had moved into Valley Bend, West Virginia from Brooklyn, New York in February. We lived in a small two story house in a village with forty houses, dirt roads, two general stores and a small church. To me it was paradise: no more locked up in an apartment, the village in which to roam at will, with friend Danny, swimming in the river, and catching my first fish over the summer.

Thanksgiving had come and gone; not to be forgotten. Our neighbors and my parents had leased land to local farmers behind the houses for corn, and hogs. By Thanksgiving the corn was picked and its remains in shocks. During breakfast we heard rifle shots behind the house, which we learned quickly, meant that the hog farmers were “harvesting” selected hogs with 22’ rifles.

By the time we finished breakfast the farmers had made the slaughterhouse (formerly the corn field) ready with very large black boiling caldrons, with tri-pods of 4” x 4s” above. The slaughtered hogs were tied to the tri-pods and lowered into the boiling caldrons to boil off the animal’s hair and make ready for butchering. Several other similar tri-pods served to hold the hogs ready for butchering and the work began in earnest.

By noon a couple dozen hogs were slaughtered and butchered. As the parts were being distributed to the farmers Danny’s Dad took up a hog’s bladder, boiled it clean, blew air into it, and tied it off and threw it to Danny. The chase was on with four or five of the local boys playing keep away from the Jewish kid, who, at that time, had never even eaten pork.

Thanksgiving dinner, late in the afternoon, was a family affair around a large wooden farmer table in the country sized kitchen.

We were all helping when I moved a tray which was leaning against a counter and kitchen wall. Mother screamed drawing our attention to a half dozen live baby field mice which had been behind the tray, eyes still closed, and no mother around.

Not knowing what else to do dad scooped

up the baby mice and disposed them before I knew where. After dinner Thanksgiving night ended in the living room playing with brother Bill, almost one year old, and floor wrestling with dad.

Ten days before Christmas a huge snow storm hit Valley Bend and surrounding tiny towns strung down the Tygart Valley from Elkins twenty miles away. Our heat and stove were supplied by a gas pipeline which died during the night. The factories dad ran were a few miles away, and the company owed the stores along the highway which contained the volunteer fire department.

By evening the old wood burning Franklin stove from the fire department had been relocated in our living room with an exhaust pipe extended and house was livable. I was tucked into my bed upstairs and the house fell asleep in turns.

Between the first and second floor there was a foot square hole covered by a grid to allow the air to circulate. Mom and dad often found me asleep in the hall next to the opening trying to spy on the grownups parties. Watching the old stove glow in the dark from above seemed like a good idea.

As I watched two field mice appeared.

The mice seemed to travel together to points of interest around the room and stopped on an area rug a few feet from the stove. The mice then began playing with one another, wrestling and even dancing while I watched. I could not have attached the names Mickey and Minnie to them as Walt Disney had drawn the first Mickey about a month before. Between that night and Christmas I tried to watch through the grate as much as I could but did not see the mice again.

By the time I saw them, on Christmas Eve, the Franklin stove had been returned and the gas line was replaced by two large containers of bottled gas on our porch.

The mice were on the kitchen table, and again appeared to be dancing. Their dance circled what must have been the world’s smallest Christmas tree featuring a 2” spool of mom’s red thread sitting on its end with a small branch of pine standing straight up through the top of the spool, and a small star at its top.

Local Company Expands HQ, Creates 160 jobs

A former Delray Beach police volunteer was arrested and charged after police said he molested a 15-year-old girl.

Police on Tuesday charged Reynold Chery, 48, with lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim under 16.

Detectives arrested the Boynton Beach resident after he told them that he knows the girl and that he had sexual contact with her once.

The girl also corroborated Cherry’s report, police said.

On Monday, a woman told police that Chery

had an ongoing sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl, according to a police report.

It was not clear whether the woman’s report tipped off police to the crime.

Chery was a member of the Police Department’s Citizens On Patrol program from March 2007 to February 2009. The volunteer Haitian Roving Patrol unit patrols communities, shopping centers and parking lots, police said.

He volunteered for 144 hours before resigning in February 2009 for unknown reasons, police said. He passed a background check prior to his volunteer hours with the city.

Police Investigating Battery as Hate Crime On Saturday, November 21 at about 11:00 a.m., the victim was walking back from a friend’s house in the area of 350 NE 2nd Street when he was battered by an unknown suspect.

The victim, who reported the crime to Boca Raton Police officers on Sunday, November 22, due to Saturday being his Sabbath, gave the following account. He was walking back from a friend’s house when a male on a bicycle passed him and shouted, “Jews should go back to Auschwitz. Hitler was right.”

The victim responded with, “Why don’t you come back here and say that!” The suspect rode over to the victim, repeated his statement and shoved the victim. As the victim

fell, he twisted around so he landed face down and his forehead hit the ground. The victim got up and exchanged punches with the suspect, before the suspect rode off on his bicycle.

The suspect is described as a white male, about 20 years old, 6’ tall, 160 pounds with blonde or light brown hair in a crew cut style and no facial hair. The suspect was wearing a light yellow shirt, navy jeans and dark shoes. He was riding a dark blue Schwinn mountain bike.

Bernhard Langer Wins 5th FAU Women's Basketball Upended Champions Player of Year Award at Kansas State

Bernhard Langer, a Boca Raton resident, won the Jack Nicklaus Award on Saturday as the PGA Tour Champions player of the year for the record fifth time.

Langer also won the award in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2014. The 58-year-old German star successfully defended his Senior

Players title in June in Massachusetts for his fifth senior major title and won in San Antonio in October for his 25th victory on the 50-and-over tour.

“I’m thrilled to be voted by my peers as the player of the year,” Langer said. “The Jack Nicklaus Award is a very meaningful achievement in my career, and to have now won it five times is certainly pretty special.”

Langer won the Charles Schwab Cup season points title for the second straight year and record third time. He also took the money title for the record fourth straight year and record seventh time in eight years, finishing with $2,340,288.

Jerry Smith was selected the rookie of the year. Smith won the Encompass Championship in Illinois in July and finished 28th on the money list with $652,365.

Despite a career-high performance by sophomore Nika Zyryanova, the Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team suffered its worst loss of the season 102-59 at the hands of Kansas State on Sunday.

The Owls (5-2) were led by Kat Wright’s 15 points and Zyryanova’s career-best 14 points. Sophomore Melinda Myers led the Owls on the boards with a game-high seven rebounds.

The Wildcats (8-1) shot better than 60 percent for the majority of the game and went 58.3 percent beyond the arc with 14 three-pointers and seven blocked shots.

Wright and Ali Gorrell each made jumpers in the opening minutes to put FAU on top 4-2, but the lead was short-lived as the Wildcats retook the advantage just 3:20 in and never let up.

Phillip Dos Santos Headlines Technical Staff Appointments

Fort Lauderdale Strikers Head Coach and General Manager Caio Zanardi today announced the technical staff for the 2016 North American Soccer League (NASL) season. Phillip Dos Santos has been appointed assistant coach, while Ricardo Lopes returns as goalkeepers coach. Cassiano Costa will serve as strength and conditioning coach. Zanardi also announced that Bruno Costa will join the Strikers as assistant general manager and lead the team’s scouting efforts.

The Strikers will announce plans for creating a youth development program, including staff positions and the head coach of Fort Lauderdale Strikers U-23, which will begin play this spring in the National Premier Soccer League.

Dos Santos, 37, joins the Strikers from 2015 NASL Championship finalists Ottawa Fury FC, where he served as technical director and assistant coach for two seasons. Phillip worked alongside his brother Marc, who was named 2015 NASL Coach of the Year.

“Phillip is a high-level professional who shares my passion, methodology and ap-

proach to the game,” said Zanardi. “He brings a vast knowledge of the league and its players. Phillip is a fantastic addition to our technical staff.”

Born in Canada and raised in Portugal, Dos Santos played until age 27 before following in the footsteps of his father and brother into the coaching ranks. Dos Santos’ experience includes time in Europe, North America and South America.

Dos Santos holds an “A“ License from the European Union of Football Association (UEFA) and has worked with Canada’s national teams. This includes serving as a scout for the under-17 team, assistant coach of the U20s, and head coach for the U21 national team. He credits time with storied Portuguese club FC Porto as formative to his coaching philosophies.

“The Strikers are an historic club in U.S. soccer, and one that has been successful in the NASL,” said Dos Santos. “After speaking with Caio, it didn’t take much to convince me to join. The club has ambitious and passionate people throughout the organization. I can bring a lot to the Strikers, as well as grow a lot within the structure of the club.”

Dos Santos speaks English, French, Portuguese and Spanish. He holds Canadian and Portuguese citizenship.
