Gov. Scott: State added 20,000 Jobs In August, Led to Wage Hike

Palm Beach County businesses have added 14,200 private-sector jobs over the last 12 months, Gov. Rick Scott said on a recent trip to town.

This announcement also brings the state unemployment rate to 5.3 percent, down from 5.9 percent compared to August 2014.

“I was proud to visit ADT’s corporate headquarters today to announce that more than 940,000 private-sector jobs have been created in Florida since December 2014.

Florida Atlantic University could lose its reputation as an easy school to get into next year. FAU, which had a near open admission policy until a decade ago, will require students entering next fall to have at least a 3.6 High School grade point average, up from 3.3 this year and 3.0 last year. The minimum score for the ACT entrance exam will also increase, from 20 to 22, all part of a plan to improve academic performance.

Whole Foods announced it will lose 1,500 jobs nationwide. No word on how many in Boca Raton.

College will soon become a reality for some South Florida residents who have often felt left behind after high school.

Florida Atlantic University plans to start a new Academy for Community Inclusion, a higher education program for students with developmental disabilities such as Down syndrome, spina bifida, cerebral palsy and some forms of autism, first starting on the Jupiter campus, then expanding to Boca in a few years.

Anti-religion Group Wants to Offer Gov. Scott: State added 20,000 Satanic Prayer at Council Meeting Jobs in August, Led to Wage Hike

A local self-described atheist and a Wisconsin-based watchdog group advocating the complete separation of church and state are challenging invocations at Boca Raton City Council meetings.

In a Sept. 25 letter to Mayor Susan Haynie, the nonprofit Freedom From Religion Foundation pointed out that last year the U.S. Supreme Court in Town of Greece (N.Y.) v. Galloway upheld prayers at city council meetings on the understanding that the town at no point excluded or denied an opportunity to a would-be prayer giver.

“Kindly add me to the invocation rotation, where at the very next available opening, I’d like to give a Satanic Invocation before the most august Boca Raton City Commission,” wrote Chaz Stevens, who started a satanist church in Pompano Beach and has been pushing to end prayers before municipal meetings in Palm Beach and Broward counties through his “Satan or Silence” project. ”My invocation will lend gravity to the occasion and reflect values long part of the Nation’s heritage. The invocation will be solemn and respectful in tone, and invite lawmakers to reflect upon shared ideas and common ends.”

The Deerfield Beach resident who also writes a blog, My Acts of Sedition, contacted the FFRF to seek its support. He has threatened to sue cities unless he is allowed to lead a prayer to Satan.

Boca Raton City Council members have been mum on the issue; however the assistant city clerk acknowledged his request.

“Please note that there is no invocation rotation for City Council meetings; the meetings do not include an invocation from clergy or the public,” she wrote.

Invocations at the Boca Raton City Council meetings are done by council members.

Roughly half of the municipalities in Palm Beach County begin their meetings with a prayer or invocation. Others either recite the Pledge of Allegiance or provide a moment of silence.

Shortly after the Supreme Court’s ruling last May, the FFRF - with more than 23,000 members, including more than 1,100 members and a chapter in Florida - sponsored a contest where people were called on to give atheist invocations at public meetings. A Lantana man responded and in December gave an invocation laced with references to a plethora of gods, including the evil one, at the Lake Worth City Commission meeting.

Four commissioners walked out in protest.

Stevens also applied to give an invocation at the Lake Worth City Commission meeting.

In May, the Deerfield Beach City Commission dropped prayer before meetings in favor of a moment of silence after Stevens asked to deliver an invocation. One commissioner threatened to leave if Stevens was permitted to give his invocation.

And in Coral Springs, commissioners voted that effective Oct. 1 it will end its longstanding policy of opening meetings with a prayerful invocation.

He also requested to do a prayer in Delray Beach, which substituted invocations with the Pledge of Allegiance before meetings.

Stevens has his sights set on other local cities’ invocations, including Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach.

The self-described Satan’s favorite minion placed a Festivus Pole made of beer cans at the Florida Capitol rotunda, as well as the City of Delray Beach last Christmas.

The security company employs more 3,000 Florida residents and more than 20 offices across the state.

Professional and business services had the largest job growth over the year with 8,100 new jobs, according to the governor’s office. Education and health services followed with 2,600 new jobs, and leisure and hospitality with 2,400 new jobs.

Florida now has more than 7 million private sector jobs, a record high for the state. Plus there are more than 200,000 current job openings in the state, state officials said.

In August 2015, the West Palm Beach metro area had 20,252 online job openings, the governor’s office said. The metro area had 5,268 high wage, high skill science technology engineering math (STEM) openings.

During the same period, more than 37,900 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource Palm Beach and the state’s other 23 regional workforce boards.

The work is not done, Scott said, adding that he wants to see more improvement in the numbers.

“We need to recruit more companies like GE and other companies [that are] considering moving out of these high tax, high regulations states down here … to diversify our economy,” he said.

Earlier this month, General Electric Co. officials said that the company may move about 500 jobs overseas because Congress did not renew a government program that allows foreign companies to borrow money to buy U.S. products.

Meanwhile the state took a huge step toward passing a $15 minimum wage last month when Democratic state Rep. Victor

Torres (D-Orlando) filed a bill to bring the issue up during the 2016 legislative session.

The bill is identical to one introduced in the Senate in July by state Sen. Dwight Bullard (D-Miami). Since the measures are the same, if both pass as currently written, all they would need a signature from the governor.

But the odds of the legislation winning favor in the Republican-controlled Legislature and securing the support of Scott is unknown.

When asked his stance on $15 per hour minimum wage proposal, Governor Scott provided no clear position.

“Any bill that goes through the House and Senate, if it makes it through there, I’ll be glad to look at it, but here’s the prism I look at things with,” he said. “Is it going to be good for families? Is it going to create more jobs? Is it going to improve education? Is it going to keep us safe? Those are the three things that I focus on every day.”

Florida, with its $8.05 an hour minimum wage, and 28 states and Washington, D.C., have minimum wages above the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, which has not been raised since July 2009.

Florida minimum wage has been gradually increasing since 2004 when voters adopted a constitutional amendment calling for the wage to be adjusted annually based on a cost-of-living index.

Some cities have even gone as high as $15, with several others also considering such a jump. No state, however, has increased its minimum wage that much. New York state has decided to raise its minimum wage to $15 an hour but only for fast-food workers.

Five Southern states don’t even have a state minimum wage: Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Another Low-Keyed Organization Quietly Changing People’s Lives I attended the 10th annual meeting of the Delray Beach Community Land Trust recently and left saying here is another organization in the community that is quietly playing a major force in making people’s lives better.

As we all know, homeownership is tightly woven into America’s DNA. Over the years, the prototypical modest home with a white picket fence has become the defining image of the American Dream.

Culturally a decent house has been a symbol of middle-class family life – long considered the cornerstone of advancement.

For many Delray Beach residents with modest means, that time-honored steppingstone is becoming less attainable. The cost of that dream in town is now at an average of $259,900 and the average sold price for a home was $160,000.

Despite those grim statistics, the Delray Beach Community Land Trust has helped at least 61 local families achieve the dream of

homeownership over the last 10 years. The CLT also manages 40 rental units within the city limits.

In this unique and interesting form of property ownership, qualified low- to moderate-income families own the home, which they can pass down to their heirs, but not the land the house sits on which is held by the CLT in perpetuity. Residents have a 99-year renewable Ground Lease agreement on the land.

Evelyn Dobson, executive director of the nonprofit organization, highlighted their achievements at its annual meeting on Sept 17 at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts (Old School Square-Gym), 51 North Swinton Ave. The organization recognized several Board members for their service. However, one that stood out was to outgoing chair Lula Butler, who was one of the founders of the organization.

The Delray Beach Community Land Trust

is considered a model for CLTs around the state and country. In fact, earlier this month the DBCLT was recognized at the Florida Housing Annual Conference as a viable affordable housing organization, which has been serving very-low to moderate income households for 10 years.

Nationally, community land trust homeowners are eight times less likely to experience foreclosure than those owning homes holding traditional prime mortgages.

As evidenced in the CLT homes, homeownership encourages neighborhood stability, and can provide a stable atmosphere to support strong families. It also creates a safe environment in which to raise children.

When families can find a good place to live in Delray Beach of any city, they’ll stay there. They’ll invest in their community and help create new economic growth.

The past decade was truly a magnificent period full of celebration, reflection, challenges and hope for the future despite

a 2 ½ year economic housing downfall, Dobson told her stakeholders in her annual report. “We have accomplished a lot since our inception. We have created permanently affordable homes, offered hard working households the chance for security, equity and legacy stemming from homeownership,” she said. “We also have provided ongoing support to our homeowners, helping support their success, and avoiding foreclosure.”

Let me also add that they have been operating with a staff of three for about five years. That’s more than a 50 percent reduction in the manpower the organization had 10 years ago.

Buying a home is usually a wise financial decision because it allows you to invest your hard-earned income in a real asset that builds equity. For many families, a home represents the largest source of wealth passed from generation to generation.

Suspend Judgment!

No one can ever claim knowing everything about any situation. Even things that often appear so obvious to the viewer, may be telling a completely different story than what one could only suspect.

I have been helped by someone’s statement to the effect that one’s point of view depends on one’s point of viewing. We need perspective in order to understand our observations with greater accuracy.

Quite often, “the obvious is not the actual.”

That’s why individuals who are unexpectedly caught in some compromising positions, are prompt in saying something like: “It’s not what it appears to be.” Sometimes it may be so, but not necessarily always!

Nevertheless, pronouncing judgment is something which requires much caution

on the part of the “judge.” The Bible strongly urges, “Judge not that you be not judged…” Yet, too many pay no attention to that imperative and spend their entire life with this undesirable proclivity!

These are most often the self-righteous persons who never think of themselves ever doing anything wrong but are perpetually critical of others, and look for anything wrong in another so as to criticize and complain. Sometimes, even when they find no basis to persist with those critical complaints, they can easily manufacture something else, so as to attack and judge another!

Having observed such attitudes for so many years, I’ve decided long ago to suspend judgment, until I am absolutely certain,

by many infallible proofs, that I’m indeed faced with a real wrong, worth of reprehension and of aid in correction.

Nevertheless, even then, it must follow certain positive directives if genuine improvement is to occur on the part of the one who erred. As it has been proven, negative attitudes seldom accomplish what a pleasant disposition can secure. Even when dealing with disregard for laws, violations of the same, and a multiplicity of erroneous attitudes and actions, a greater good is achieved when a non-judgmental approach in employed.

I never forget a true story of a painter who set up his studio on the ground floor of a busy street where, from the time of his arrival, he noticed a street vagabond daily

begging right across the street, in full view of his studio’s window. So, he decided to paint that individual, not as he appeared then but as the painter envisioned him to become. Then he invited the street person to come inside and see the painting depicting that vagabond. His reaction was most unique; he responded to the painter, “If this is the man you see, that’s the person I’ll be!” He was stimulated to be what he could be instead of remaining in his deplorable condition; and so he did! We can help many more people by approaching them rather than distancing ourselves from them; by being positive in our dealings with them instead of venting judgmental attacks!

A Major League Park For A Major League Milestone

As part of the on-field celebrations for Labor Day, 2015 the Bionic Glove Project was proud to be at Marlins’ Park to watch as young “Julian” threw out the ceremonial 1st Pitch. Julian is BGP’s youngest recipient at 6 years-old.

Even more impressive is that Julian has only been wearing a 3D hand for 3 months. Already on his second hand (to accommodate a growing body) Julian was able to deliver a “perfect strike” to the Marlins catcher on

the other end.

Joining Julian was his family – mother, father, and older brother who himself was in a little league tournament last weekend in Coral Springs.

BGP Co-Founders Charles Perry Weinthal and Chad Coarsey were also on hand to offer encouragement and support for Julian and his family.

“This is really is all it’s about” said Corsey.

“From personal experience I know how important it is to feel like you are like your other friends. I am so proud of Julian. He reminds me how much of an impact BGP can have on the lives of other children.”

Perry Weinthal, BGP Chief Science Officer and a parent himself knows that as a parent “ you always want the best for your children. If we can make Julian and hos family this happy then I feel we are fdoing something very right.” Headded “this is what gets me going everyday. I am committed to helping as many children as we can.

Who could say no?!”

Julian’s prosthetic alternative is a low cost fully functioning hand that BGP plans on making available to the children of Pam Beach county as well as South Florida.

Kretzer Piano Music Foundation Presented Lynn University Conservatory of Music in Concert

On Sept. 15, student musicians from the Woodwind Department of Lynn University Conservatory of Music performed beautiful works by well known composers, such as Charles Gounod, Villa Lobos, and Mozart, at The Harriet Himmel Theater in CityPlace for this month’s Music for the Mind concert, presented by the Kretzer Piano Music Foundation.

The Kretzer Piano Music Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bring joy to the community and change the lives of others with the gift of music. On the 3rd Tuesday of every month, the Kretzer Foundation presents the Music for the Mind concert series, dedicated to raise funds for music programs in local schools.

“Since the year 2002, we’ve had over 2,3000 young performers at the theater,” said Kathi Kretzer, owner and founder of Kretzer Piano Music Foundation. “We have generated a revenue of $548,000 and the performing organization keeps 100% of the money they raise.”

Lynn University has been participating in the Music for the Mind series for 4 years now.

“Every year they feature something different,” said Kretzer. “They would have the Strings Department, one year ago they had all the piano students so they vary every year.”

Eric Van der Veer Varner, professor and head of the Woodwind studio at the Lynn University Conservatory of Music, selected the repertoire based on the instrumentation and number of students, getting almost the whole department to participate.

“I knew that I would be able to work with clarinet, oboes, flute and bassoon, and I was pretty sure I could get horn players as well,” said Eric Varner. “I was looking at the repertoire for those instrumentations thinking, what would be a good piece where as many students as possible could participate?”

The logistics of getting too many students

on the scene to perform all at once, might have been problematic. The initial idea was to have a smaller ensemble. After a lot of thinking Varner came up with Gounod and Mozart as the solution, having a lot students fairly concentrated and a massive amount for the big finale.

The Woodwind Department opened with the piece from Charles Gounod.

“It is very pleasant to listen to, I think it’s a lot of fun,” said Varner about Gounod’s work. “It’s very French. When we were rehearsing this, I was talking to the students and one of my pet theories is that French music is, much like French culture, defined by what it is rather than what it does,” explained Varner.

The next piece was from Villa Lobos, a bassoon and flute duet performed by 2 graduate students.

“Not only was it different in terms of the number of people up there performing but musically speaking it was very different,” said Varner. “It was rhythmically driven and there was a lot of dissidence and I felt like it was almost a pallet cleanser after the Gounod before the Mozart.”

Even though the student musicians had only 2 short weeks to prepare for the concert, the did a outstanding job and put up an incredible performance.

Next month’s Music for the Mind will bring Jupiter Academy Music.

Besides the Music for the Mind concerts, the Kretzer Music Foundation has also it’s very own group of young musicians, the Kretzer Kids. These talented music students entertain the community by playing at nursing homes, children’s hospitals, and assisted living facilities.

Some of the Kretzer Kids have proved their great talent, by making it all the way to Broadway and graduating from Juilliard.

“One of our singers was in Broadway in Annie for 8 months,” said Kretzer about one of the Kretzer Kids.

The program gives the children the opportunity to perform in great venues and have the support from their community.

“Music can change your life, whether it is a child or a senior citizen sitting in a wheelchair with some kind of stroke,” said Kretzer about the power of music.

Jewish Holiday Celebrations I celebrated the Jewish holidays with my dear friends at the Boca Raton Country club where my husband, Bob and I were joined by 8 others to enjoy the traditional Rosh Hashanah Dinner which consisted of gefilte fish, matzo ball soup, chopped liver, chicken and brisket and noodle pudding and string beans. A delicious enjoyable evening for sure. The next night I had friends and neighbors to my home for the second night of the holiday. Next year we will make reservations. Too much work!

Black Hats Enjoy Tavolino Della Nonna The September luncheon for the Black Hat Diva’s took place at the wonderful Tavolino Della Nonna in Coral Springs. A fabulous family style lunch was served to the group of 17 ladies, an unbelievable huge Italian feast was served family style. You never walk out of this place hungry for sure. The diva’s played an Elvis Presley song game, which was won by Helene Weicholz.

Tiger Bay Speaker Discusses Human Trafficking This month’s speaker at the Tiger Bay Club luncheon was Ginger Martin who spoke about climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise $800,000. for the Freedom Challlenge foundation. She spoke on human trafficking and told us that most of the girls average age was 12-14 years old. Boca Raton had a situation involving human trafficking and how her group tries to eduacate these trafficked girls once they are freed so they can get jobs. The human trafficking industry does $32 Billion Dollars a year.

“The New Girlfriend” is one curious little movie by French writer-director Francois Ozon. For one thing the girlfriend is not a girl but a man who enjoys dressing as a woman.

That would be David (Romain Duris), whose alter ego is Virginia. David is the husband of Laura (Islid Le Besco), who is best friends for life with Claire (Anais Demoustier).

Claire is killed off early in the plot, adapted from a novel by Ruth Rendell. David is left with a young daughter Lucie (Brune Kalnykow) he is not sure how to care for.

Claire steps in to help David, and she gets more than she bargained for. David it seems has been a transvestite all through his marriage. Though Davis was literally in the closet, with the death of his wife he is free to pursue his predilections, and share them with Claire, who has become his closest friend.

Fear Not In The Face Of Fearful Factors One of the most common emotions is fear.

Psychologists have a term for our reaction to circumstances we perceive as threatening.

It is called the "fight or flight" response. We either confront the persons or situations that threaten us in some way, or we flee, seeking to avoid or even escape potential calamity.

There is, however, a third response, one we are not likely to hear recommended by supposed experts on the human psyche.

This reaction is simply to "fear not." Not long ago I heard a speaker from the west African nation of Sierra Leone who noted the words "fear not" appear in the Bible 365 times, seemingly one for every day in the calendar year.

Since people in Sierra Leone have experienced any number of adversities in recent years, ranging from economic struggles to outbreaks of the Ebola virus to civil discord, the speaker was well-schooled in the subject of fear. And yet he repeatedly declared his determination to follow the exhortation to "fear not" - "do not be afraid."

But what about the environment where we spend much of our time, the business and professional world? It is volatile, unpredictable, and can turn a prince into a pauper virtually overnight. Those possessing an entrepreneurial spirit know starting a business is risky. In the corporate world, executives and managers are constantly under pressure to produce; failure to do so can result in having to pack up their offices and find employment elsewhere.

Ambitious deadlines often cause considerable anxiety; fear arises when those deadlines seem unrealistic or unattainable. When

a key client or customer becomes unhappy with our products or services, we fear losing their business, even if their reasons for dissatisfaction are beyond our control.

Potential failure lurks at every corner. So how can we "fear not?"

Humanly speaking, this is difficult, if not impossible. But since the command comes from God, it seems accompanied by His promise to provide what we need during difficult times. Here are examples: Rely on God's presence. As David was preparing to surrender the leadership of Israel, he exhorted his son Solomon, his successor as king, "...'Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work...is finished'" (1 Chronicles 28:20).

Depend on God's power. When trouble arrives, we are tempted to deal with it in our ability and strength alone. God tells us, however, to rely on Him and His resources.

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand" (Isaiah 41:10).

Trust in God's purpose and plans. When unexpected setbacks occur, we wonder whether God cares - or if He is even aware.

He promises He does know, and does care.

He is never caught off guard by times of adversity. "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future'" (Jeremiah 29:11).

Henrietta, Countess de Hoernle Honored in Special Benefit Concert Although Henrietta, Countess de Hoernle was only on September 24, the 103-yearold philantropist had a very special surprise in store thanks to the Order of St. John of Jerusalem Knights Hospitaller as they hosted the Benefit Concert in celebration of a true friend of the City of Boca Raton at the Keith C and Elaine Johnson Wold Performing Arts Center at Lynn University.

The concert, “A Knight in Budapest,” was performed by the Lynn University Philharmonia, under the direction of Dr. Jon Robertson.

The concert was both a tribute and benefit recognizing Countess de Hoernle’s lifelong philanthropy.

Barbara and Irving Gutin served as Honorary Chairs and Dame Jan Jessup, DSJ, Chevalier Paul Sallarulo, KSJ, and Commander Isabelle K. Paul, DCJSJ, served as event chairmen.

The Commander explained the Countess de Hoernle is patroness of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospital-

ler (Malta)’s Americas Priory and the OSJ Commandery of Florida.

She is the third person ever to receive the Lieutenant Grand Master of the Order’s Cross of Merit, presented at her 100th birthday celebration, and is one of the few holders of the Order’s Grand Cross of Justice and Medal of Merit.

The Order of St John of Jerusalem is a 966-year-old Order of Chivalry that has cared for the sick and the poor since 1048 A.D. Since she moved to The City Of Boca Raton, Florida in the 1980s, “Rita” (as she is known to her friends) has supported many local charities and her name appears on numerous buildings throughout the city.

At her personal request, all proceeds raised at her birthday concert celebration will benefit local charities aiding the sick and the poor.

Boca Gymnast Champ Offers her National Medal to Girl With Sickle Cell Disease

Lia is made an honorary Rising Stars Gymnastics member in a salute to National Gymnastics Day, Saturday, Sept, 19. Cameron wanted to give Lia her national medal for her bravery. Her coaches provided another medal, so that Cameron could keep hers.

When gymnast Cameron Marshall heard that 11- year-old Lia Ottinot of Miami Lakes was living with sickle cell disease, the 2015 AAU national gymnastics champion told her mother she wanted to give Lia her gold medal.

“Mom, she’s a champion,” said the 9-yearold of Boca Raton.

Her mom, Toni Marshall, who had heard Lia’s story on WHQT (Hot-105 FM) radio, contacted Lia’s dad, Sunny Isles Beach City Attorney Hans Ottinot. She invited Lia to National Gymnastics Day held Saturday, Sept.. 19, at Cameron’s gym, Rising Stars Gymnastics in Boca Raton. Lia was the honorary guest.

“Lia loves gymnastics,” Ottinot told Marshall. “I am touched by this.”

Lia is a spokesperson for OneBlood, an organization that encourages blood donations for people suffering with diseases like sickle cell, a painful, inherited form of anemia caused by irregularly shaped red blood cells. The disease disproportionately affects African-Americans. It occurs in about 1 of 500 births in African-Americans and 1 of 1,400 Hispanic births.

However, it also can be found among those whose ancestors came from sub-Saharan Africa; Spanish-speaking regions in the Western Hemisphere (South America, the Caribbean, and Central America); Saudi Arabia; India; and Mediterranean countries such as Turkey, Greece and Italy. There is no cure.

Blood transfusions help alleviate some of the pain, which Lia described as feeling like you are being punched, sometimes.

On Saturday, Lia was all smiles when she entered the gym. She received a medal and an honorary membership. Julie Willmott, owner of Kids Choice Sports, Dance & Fitness, the umbrella company of Rising Stars, wouldn’t let gymnast Cameron give up her gold medal, so the gym provided Lia with another medal.

“Cameron worked too hard for the medal,” Wilmott said. “I’m so very proud of her for wanting to give it up, but it was her first national all-around medal, I couldn’t let her do it.”

Lia joined other kids and gymnasts as they participated in a two-minute handstand salute at 1 p.m. Rising Stars gymnasts, who grabbed 71 of 75 potential medals at the AAU Nationals Gymnastics competition in Las Vegas in June, tumbled and showed off their other skills. It was time for Lia and the others to try out the gym. They balanced on beam, pulled up on bars, cartwheeled and jumped – a lot.

“I am having a lot of fun,” said Lia, taking a quick water break. As an honorary member, Lia can visit the gym whenever she’s in town. Cameron now has a new friend and is learning about a disease.

“I’m so proud of Cameron,” said Marshall, who also works at the gym. “It is so important that she holds on to her generous spirit. It also is important that she learns about this particular disease that disproportionately affects us.”

On Saturday, Rising Stars joined the fundraising efforts for sickle cell research. Those wishing to help out Lia and others may stop by the gymnasium, 6500 W. Rogers Circle.

On September 19, The Boca Raton Tribune and its publisher, Douglas Heizer were the recipients of the Community Publishers of Florida (CPF) Milton & Bernice Beckerman Award.

The award, which was named after Milton & Bernice Beckerman, honors the couple for their long-time membership to CPF and other free paper associations.

For over 25 years the couple supported CPF as associate members. In 1993 they placed $15,000 in an investment account for the purpose of giving our increments to winner of the award.

For the past nine years, the Rotary Carousel Day has taken place at Boca Raton’s Sugar Sand Park and The Boca Raton Tribune has been a partner since the newspaper was founded back in 2010.

Last year alone, the carousel day was able to collect a record amount of over $16,000 in both toys and donations.

With the support of all five Rotary Clubs in Boca Raton, the Rotary Carousel Day has been a family event for the entire City.

The event invites people from Boca Raton to join in at Sugar Sand Park to donate toys to the needy kids in Boca Raton. All the donations are given to Boca Helping Hands and The Wayne Barton Center.

sports Record-Night on Defense Gives FAU 17-7 Win in C-USA Opener

A 60-yard interception return for a touchdown by freshman Ocie Rose sealed a 17-7 victory for the Florida Atlantic University football team in its Conference USA opener at Charlotte on Saturday.

The Owls (1-3, 1-0 C-USA) set a school record by snagging six interceptions, including four in the second half and one on each of Charlotte’s final three drives to capture the win.

Rose and senior Cre’von LeBlanc each tallied a pair of interceptions while Sharrod Neasman and Jalen Young grabbed one apiece.

“It was hard to secure the ball tonight,” FAU Head Coach Charlie Partridge said. “It rained the entire time -- we have to get better at that. At the end of the day, it’s a win on the road and it feels good.”

Senior Jaquez Johnson returned under center for the Owls for the first time since leaving the Miami game on Sept. 11 with an injury. The quarterback went 14-of-25 with 144 yards and a rushing touchdown.

Jenson Stoshak led the receiving corps with five catches for 38 yards while Greg Howell rushed for 63 yards.

Defensively, the Owls did not allow a redzone opportunity and forced seven turnovers on the night. FAU’s 139 interception

return yards, led by Rose’s 60, goes down as the second-most in program history. The Owls tallied nine tackles for loss and five sacks, including three by Trey Hendrickson.

After a turnover on downs by Charlotte in the first quarter, Johnson capped off a sixplay drive with a 14-yard touchdown run to give FAU the early lead.

Young’s interception ended Charlotte’s first drive of the second quarter, FAU’s Greg Joseph kicked a 45-yard field goal to extend the advantage to 10-0.

Charlotte’s Tank Norman picked off a Johnson pass and returned it 28 yards to the end zone to put the 49ers on the board, cutting the FAU lead to 10-7 with 10:58 to play.

The FAU defense, however, held strong, forcing five turnovers and four punts in the second half.

With just over a minute to play in a onepossession game, Rose jumped a route and took his first career interception 60 yards to ice the contest. Just two plays later, Rose grabbed another interception on the sideline, ending Charlotte’s night offensively and putting the Owls in the victory formation.

Lynn Soccer Ties Barry in Miami

Lynn University's men's soccer team held a 2-0 lead but two quick second-half strikes from Barry and an overtime stalemate ended the match in a 2-2 draw on Wednesday night. Chris Hellmann tied for the national lead with his 10th goal of the season and Bruno Militz scored his second goal as the Fighting Knights record moved to 2-1-2 overall and 0-1-1 in Sunshine State Conference play.

Just 10:49 into the match the Blue & White went ahead 1-0. Dominic Friedl flipped a pass over the Buccaneer (4-0-2, 0-0-1 SSC) defense off a throw-in from Hussein Heidari and Hellmann took care of business in a 1-v-1 opportunity with keeper Bo Haug. The junior from Cologne, Germany now has 42 career goals, placing him fourth in program history.

as he beat Haug on a shot from the right wing to the left post moments into the second half. Lynn's lead would be short-lived with Barry's Manuel Perez scoring goals in the 52nd and 56th minutes to knot the match at 2-2.

Neither team had much of an opportunity in overtime with Lynn and Barry attempting only one shot apiece total. Jonny DeMoya logged a career-high eight saves, many of which kept the Blue & White either ahead or tied with the Buccaneers.

Boca Raton FC Signs Former Fort Lauderdale Striker, Scott Gordon

Boca Raton Football Club is proud to announce the signing of hometown talent, Scott Gordon.

The Spanish River High School graduate began his college soccer career at Mercer University before transferring to Lynn University prior to his sophomore year in 2007.

After missing all of 2008 due to injury Gordon returned to the field for his junior season in 2009, appearing in 12 games and receiving an All-Sunshine State Conference Honorable Mention.

Gordon finished his college career with 28 games, logging five goals, four assists and 14 points. He was a two-time All-Sunshine State Conference honoree, and collected NSCAA All-South Region recognition honors as a senior.

During his time with the Knights, Gordon also played for the Baton Rouge Capitals in the USL Premier Development League, scoring one goal in 14 games and helping the Capitals to the PDL national playoff semifinals in 2010.

After great two great seasons with the Lynn University Knights, Gordon was drafted with the 53rd overall pick in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft by FC Dallas.

“Scott is a great talent,” says managing partner Douglas Heizer. “Having him play in the city where it all began for him is special, not only for him, but for the entire city of Boca Raton.”

“He’s a quality player,” added general man-

ager/head coach, Marcelo Castillo. “I’ve see Scott play in every level and having a player like him is big for us.”

Gordon has had stints in Major League Soccer’s FC Dallas, and Chivas USA, as well as with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers of the North American Soccer League.

In Fort Lauderdale, the 6’4 rightback played in 39 matches for the red and gold, and found the back of the net three times.

Most recently, Gordon was a member of Red Force where he appeared in 11 matches, recorded two assists and three goals.

“I want to thank Red Force for resolving the Scott Gordon release a swiftly as they did,” says Heizer. “Red Force’s owner, Gabriel Vega is top class and the organization as a whole has been very professional throughout this entire process.”

“I’m incredibly thankful to the entire Boca Raton FC organization for putting faith in me this upcoming season,” says Gordon.

“Boca Raton is my home and I’m excited to suit up for this team as soon as possible.”

Gordon will be available to suit up for his hometown team on October 10 versus Miami Storm FC, upon serving his three-game suspension given to him by the American Premier Soccer League Executive Board.

Gordon has also been added to Boca Raton FC’s U.S. Open Cup roster as the APSL Champions take on Real Miami on October 25.

Boca Raton FC Learns its First 2016 Open Cup Opponent Earlier this week U.S. Soccer revealed the Open Qualifying Round opponent of to 2015 American Premier Soccer League Champions, Boca Raton FC. The tournament will begin for Boca Raton FC on October 25 at 4:30pm as they battle Real Miami at St. John Bosco Football Stadium, in Miami.

As a fourth division club, Boca Raton FC begins their journey through the U.S. Open Cup much earlier than other teams like the L.A. Galaxy, Seattle Sounders, or Orlando City.

The first two qualifying rounds of the U.S. Open Cup take play in October and November of this year, and if Boca Raton FC advances past these two rounds, they will await the draw of the MLS, NASL, and USL teams that will take place in January of 2016 to determine their next opponent.

“To play in the U.S. Open Cup is tremendous for our club,” says head coach Marcelo Castillo. “This is an important tournament for us as it gives us exposure on a national level.”

“Our goal from the start of the season was to win it and make the U.S. Open Cup,” says majority owner, Douglas Heizer. “Not everyone who wants to play in the U.S. Open Cup gets to play.”

Over 400 clubs attempt a berth in the U.S. Open Cup, but not all are awarded a spot.

Many criteria’s must be met for a club to be awarded a spot in the third-longest running national tournament in the world.

Although soccer in the United States doesn’t have the same history as other countries around the world, the U.S. can still claim the third-oldest continuously running national tournament. The first U.S. Open Cup, then called the National Challenge Cup, was played in 1914 and has continued every year since. England’s FA Cup is the oldest association tournament in the world, beginning play in 1871.

It’s not often that lower division teams get a chance to knock off one of the big dogs of American soccer. MLS teams enter in the fourth round of the tournament and every year the 16 remaining NASL, USL, and amateur clubs get a shot. In 2014, four MLS clubs were knocked out in the fourth round, and two NASL clubs made it all the way to the quarterfinals. However, despite the lack success of lower division clubs, the national media exposure that a club receives in playing in the U.S. Open Cup is enough to launch the career of some players that otherwise would have gone unnoticed in the lower divisions.

“Many of our players have a hunger to make it to the second, and even the first division,” says Castillo. “This tournament is their window into the soccer world and will also help put the Boca Raton FC name in places that otherwise would not have heard of our club.”
