The Florida League of Cities announced that City of Boca Raton Deputy City Manager George Brown, and Council Member Yvette Drucker were recently appointed to serve on the Florida League of Cities 2022-2023 Legislative Policy Committees.

Brown will serve on the Municipal Administration Policy Committee, while Drucker will serve on the Transportation and Intergovernmental Relations Policy Committee, representing two of the League’s five Legislative Policy Committees.

As Legislative Policy Committee members, Brown and Drucker will help develop the League’s Legislative Action Agenda, which details priority issues that are most likely to affect daily municipal governance and local decision-making during the upcoming session.

• In recognition of the 21st anniversary of 9/11, Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, and South Florida residents honored America’s fallen heroes and the thousands of victims who were killed on September 11, 2001, at Jewish National Fund-USA’s and KKLJNF’s 9/11 Living Memorial in Jerusalem — the only commemorative site of its kind outside of the U.S. that lists all the names of those who perished.

• Florida has a significant human trafficking problem. The state ranks third in the country in the number of cases reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline.

In 2020, the most recent year for which there are complete national statistics compiled by the hotline, there were 738 reported cases of human trafficking in Florida: 28% of those who were trafficked for sex were minors, and almost 85% of those were female. When Palm Beach Dramaworks Director of Education and Community Engagement Gary Cadwallader was told by a school principal that teen human trafficking “keeps me up at night,” he and Producing Artistic Director William Hayes were determined that PBD would help bring awareness of this lurking danger to the county’s students.

They commissioned playwright Eric Coble to write a play about human trafficking and online safety that would be presented free to seventh grade students in Palm Beach County schools. The result is the powerful Live to Tell, in which three 15-year-old girls from very different backgrounds reveal how they were preyed upon by savvy predators and trapped in the world of sex trafficking.

The response to the play by students demonstrates the impact theatre can have to enlighten, to change lives, and, with this play, even save lives. “It shows, tells us what could happen/would happen if we’re not careful,” one student commented. “It can help us save someone from going through the same thing the characters were,” said another.

Live to Tell will be performed at various PBC middle schools during September as part of PBD’s One Humanity Tour, a professional touring program that began in 2017 with a commissioned play for sixth graders called Swagger, also written by Coble. The One Humanity Tour was created with assistance from the School District of Palm Beach County and the West Palm Beach Police Department, and conceived out of the conviction that theatre can contribute to the development of informed, thoughtful, and compassionate citizens. Swagger, which is also being performed this month, addresses the tensions between the public and law enforcement from different vantage points, and has thus far played to over 19,500 students. Each performance of both plays is followed by a talkback, and there are supplemental materials for teachers, administrators, and parents.

As PBD prepared to launch Live to Tell in 2020, Cadwallader was guided by local agencies that help track and prosecute traffickers, including the Palm Beach Coun-

ty Sheriff ’s Office, the West Palm Beach Police Department, and The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, as well as trafficking awareness educators like the Human Trafficking Coalition of the Palm Beaches.

The post-performance talkback includes interviews, conducted by cast members, with a behavioral health specialist and a representative from the Human Trafficking Coalition of the Palm Beaches about online safety, and emphasizes to students how their smartphones are a gateway for traffickers. Students are asked to fill out a post-performance survey, and at the very bottom of the page is a message that says: “If there is a situation in your life where you feel uncomfortable and would like to speak with a trusted adult, please say so below. Turn in this paper directly to your teacher.” It also provides additional ways to get help.

Live to Tell managed just a few performances in 2020 before everything shut down, but its effectiveness was immediately apparent. “We know for certain by comments we received on our post-performance surveys that we are making an impact with students during the performance and talkback, and raising red flags about predatory behavior,” said Cadwallader. “We are not only telling a compelling story of three young people ensnared in trafficking, but hopefully saving young people from falling into the trap of coercion and exploitation. We know that Live to Tell can help save a young person from trauma or death by defining human trafficking and showing them examples of what could happen if you fall prey to traffickers.”

Live to Tell is an eye-opening exposure to the dangers and realities of human trafficking, and a compelling way to educate our youth about staying safe and protecting themselves from traffickers.”

The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences continues to bolster its commitment to expand outreach in the Spanish-speaking community.

Luz Bahder is the latest communications professional to join the UF/IFAS public relations team as a Spanish media relations specialist. Bahder joined UF/IFAS in August, filling a critical role to increase accessibility and visibility of UF/IFAS science-based information and services to the Spanish-speaking community.

A native of Grecia, Costa Rica and science communicator by trade, Bahder’s responsibilities include translating and communicating vital content on services, programs, events and research developments for consumers, while connecting with the Spanish-speaking media statewide.

“We are thrilled to welcome Bahder to our team of specialists who are dedicated to meeting the needs of Florida’s communities as we advance UF’s land grant mission,” said Chris Vivian, associate vice president of UF/IFAS Communications. “Her skills will bridge the gap and reduce language barriers to improve participation opportunities for Spanish-speaking families and communities.”

Bahder joins Lourdes Mederos, public relations manager for the Southeast District, based out of UF/IFAS Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center in the heart of South Florida. They are part of a

statewide media team assisting journalists looking for information and faculty experts, to better share current faculty research and UF/IFAS science-based information.

“From a young age I loved science and throughout my professional training as a scientist, I learned the value of communicating science to the public,” said Bahder. “Now being able to direct my knowledge and passion for science to a public that shares my native tongue, and my cultural experiences is both an honor and the opportunity of a lifetime.”

Bahder’s previous translation and transcreation work spans a wide variety of specialties in multiple scientific fields focusing on both basic and applied aspects of crocodilians, arthropod pests of crops, plant pathogens, viticultural practices and legal documentation for wineries.

Bahder served as a primary contact for National Geographic every time it filmed in Costa Rica, for multiple documentary series on crocodile behavior and biogeography while a student at Universidad Nacional and after her graduation. She also worked for MINAE, the government’s ministry of environment and energy, in Costa Rica, where she served as a consultant reviewing projects and giving expert advice on governmental permits and regulations.

She also served as a translator for Washington State University, also a public, land grant university.

Coco’s Story is Serving as Encouragement to Local Girls Until her grandmother dragged her to the Pompey Park gymnasium recently, Sheryl Malone knew very little about tennis superstar Cori “Coco” Gauff.

“I heard people talking about this young girl who played tennis, but I didn’t know anything more about her, … who she was or where she was from,” the Delray Beach teenager said after meeting the teen champ. “But after what I heard today, she is definitely a good role model and one day, I would like to be just like her.”

Malone,14, was among about 130 family, friends and fans who attended Gauff ’s “Welcome home from Wimbledon” celebration inside the gym Saturday evening. The event, which was also attended by Delray Beach Mayor Shelly Petrolia, Deputy Vice Mayor Bill Bathurst, City Commissioner Ryan Boylston and Chief of Police Javaro Sims, was moved indoors at the last minute because of what Gauff ’s aunt, Joi Odom, called “liquid sunshine.”

As I scanned the gymnasium, I counted less than 40 young girls under the age of 17. I think that gymnasium should have been packed considering what she represents to

young people in her hometown.

“Coco is a huge role model for girls her age and younger. She is showing us girls that anything is possible if we put our minds to it,” said Asianna Livingston, 15, of Delray Beach. “My peers … wish they can be like her because she has accomplished so much at a young age, and the City of Delray Beach is really proud of her.”

While visiting Pompey Park recently, I noticed Gauff was speaking to her grandpa, Eddie “Red” Odom, via FaceTime from England.

He was telling her how proud he was after she began generating front-page stories and international buzz as the youngest competitor to qualify for the Wimbledon Tennis Championships since 1991.

Several kids were holding court around him and asking, “Is that the real Coco?”

(Coincidentally, the baseball fields at Pompey Park are named after Odom and are just feet away from the clay tennis courts where Gauff grew up training and the same courts where Venus and her sister Serena Williams spent their formative tween years practicing in the 1990s.)

It was then that it dawned on me that these kids, whom I am certain did not see the match, were witnessing a historic moment. Only days earlier, the 15-year-old had knocked off her longtime hero, Venus Williams, in the first round of Wimbledon, and then beat Magdalena Rybarikova in dominating fashion, before pulling off a comeback over Polona Hercog that will live on in Wimbledon lore.

Her victory thrust the country into Cocomania.

She became an inspiration to youths all over and urged them to give their best and never give up.

“To all the young girls and boys out there, you can do whatever you want as long as you work hard and stay dedicated. The road isn’t always easy,” Coco, who has absolutely nothing to lose and whose confidence is at an all-time high, told the crowd on Saturday. “Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, not even your parents. It’s ok to be crazy sometimes. Crazy is good.”

She added: “A lot of people may say I’m crazy for dreaming so big, but I think you shouldn’t just reach for the sky when you

can reach for the stars. I think the possibilities are endless.”

She has learned not to let naysayers on social media affect her performance on the court. And even when she was down by two points, she remained focused and determined, thinking on the advice of the late football coach and principal C. Spencer Pompey, through her grandpa, “Never say die.”

I have had the privilege to see Coco off the court and away from the cameras and limelight and she is just like any other teen despite her tennis prowess.

In fact, when a reporter asked her how she plans to spend the nearly $200,000 in Wimbledon winnings, with the innocence of a child, she said, “I mean, I can’t buy a car because I don’t drive.”

She however said she may buy some hoodies.

The Benevolence Of Burden-Bearing

Around Palm Beach County with Mayor Weinroth At the Board of County Commissioners workshop on Aug. 30, 2022, Mayor Weinroth presented the county’s Fire Rescue Department with a certificate of recognition for achieving the Class 1 Fire Department rating, the best possible rating from the Insurance Services Office (ISO). Only .01% of fire departments received this honor out of nearly 40,000 agencies that went through the rigorous testing and reporting process. The ISO rates fire departments based on the ability to respond to and prevent fires. With its new Class 1 Public Protection Classification, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue is now a proud member of the elite Fire Rescue departments in the nation that hold this distinction. This accomplishment is a true testament to the department’s vision statement of “Excellence Today, Improving Tomorrow.”

At the Board of County Commissioners meeting on Aug. 23, 2022, Mayor Robert S. We i n r o t h presented a certificate of commendation to Nicole Farley, a student at Florida Atlantic Unive r s i t y i n Boca Raton, for her bravery in saving the life of a local beachgoer who was caught in an ocean rip current while swimming near the South Beach Pavilion in Boca Raton on March 19, 2022.

On Aug. 2, 2022, Mayor Weinroth joined the county’s emergency management team to discuss hurricane preparedness with residents of Hunters Run in Boynton Beach. The team also included volunteer members of their Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) who play significant roles in their communities during an emergency. CERT volunteers receive training in fire safety, light search and rescue and disaster medical operations. With this training, they help first responders in providing immediate assistance to victims and organize volun-

teers at disaster sites. Disasters can strike anywhere and anytime, and CERT volunteers receive basic safety and disaster skills training that can make the difference between life and death.

On Aug. 2, 2022, Mayor Weinroth spoke to members of the Federation of Boca Raton Homeowners Association at the Boca Raton Community Center. The mayor provided an update on numerous county issues including the 2023 proposed budget challenges and initiatives addressing the affordable and workforce housing crisis. He also provided an update on a number of local road projects including intersection, paving and safety improvements.

On July 30, 2022, Mayor Weinroth attended the annual Back to School Bash at Village Academy in Delray Beach and the Convention Center in West Palm Beach.

These events are held countywide and coordinated by the county’s Community Revitalization team in collaboration with 60 local nonprofit agencies, donors, sponsors and vendors.

More than 400 volunteers worked with these agencies in providing over 4,000 local children with school supplies, clothing and sneakers in preparation of the upcoming school year. Kudos to everyone for such a successful and important event!

On July 17, 2022, Mayor Weinroth attended a Special Spaces bedroom makeover reveal for Caedyn, a local 4-year-old boy diagnosed with brain cancer. The volunteer-based design team created a police-themed bedroom since Caedyn wants to be a police officer when he grows up. To make the day even more special, deputies from Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office and The City of West Palm Beach provided Caedyn with a fun-filled day with lots of activities including a ride in the police car and boat.

One day during a period of some difficult changes at work, I asked an employee how she was doing. She responded that she was fine. I looked her in the eyes and said, “No. How are you really doing?” I could see from her demeanor that the upheaval at our business was taking a negative toll on her.

The next morning, with tears in her eyes, this employee approached me to say my heartfelt question the previous day had touched her. It made her understand that I really cared. She then expressed important thoughts about how she perceived the changes and what was troubling her the most.

A study by an employee benefits administration company discovered 33 percent of people would be willing to switch companies if they knew they would receive more empathy, and 40 percent said they would work longer hours as long as they felt assured that those they were working for genuinely cared about them and their well-being.

This is interesting, since empathy is not a topic given much attention in business schools, if at all. Even in management training, the focus is typically on how to get things done most productively and efficiently, not on how to address the heartfelt needs of the people doing the work.

Empathy is defined as the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. In the business and professional world, we can easily ignore the feelings of others. Maximizing profits and satisfying stakeholders tend to take priority.

But genuinely caring for others can make a tremendous difference in developing loyal employees that are more content and productive because they feel valued.

In the Bible’s New Testament, Galatians 6:2 teaches, “Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.” Another way to express this is “sharing the load.” The weight of emotions, or the strain of dealing with problems that cannot be quickly resolved, can overwhelm. Sometimes we can help in specific, tangible ways. Other times all we can do is communicate to the other person that we care - and sometimes, that is enough. We might assure them we are praying for them. Helping to bear someone else’s burdens might be an act of benevolence they will never forget.

The Scriptures affirm this principle in other ways: Willingness to put others first.

Whether our role is that of executive, supervisor or coworker, showing empathy to others communicates we are concerned for their best interests. “We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves.”

(Romans 15:1).

Doing as we would want others to do for us. If you were in the middle of circumstances that seemed overwhelming, would you want to experience the concern and care of others to help you through the difficult time? “…serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this 1 command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself ’” (Galatians 5:13-14).

Buyer Beware: ‘Ironing Out’ the Facts on Vitamins and Supplements (StatePoint) The supplement industry is booming, with more than four in five Americans taking vitamins or supplements, according to a recent Harris Poll on behalf of the American Osteopathic Association. Despite their popularity, the FDA doesn’t test the effectiveness, safety or quality of supplements or their ingredients.

• Sciencebacked products. Don’t tr ust your family’s health to a formula cooked up in a kitchen sink. FAU Awarded $1 Million NIH Grant Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine received a $1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to launch the first Florida Summer Institute in Biostatistics and Data Science in the Southeastern United States – and one of only 10 sites across the nation. FAU is working in collaboration with the University of Miami and Florida International University on the program, which is focused on health disparities related to cardiovascular and infectious diseases. The summer program runs annually from mid-May through June, with a new cohort for each of the five-years of funding.

The NIH Summer Institute in Biostatistics and Data Science, which is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the NIH Office of Data Science Strategy, offers an extensive six-week summer training experience centered on biostatistics, epidemiology and data science. The program includes relevant examples from data collected in real research studies of prevention and treatment of infectious, immune-mediated and chronic diseases. The program introduces college students and recent graduates to the principles, methodologies, uses, and applications of statistical methods in biomedical and clinical research.

Both FAU and FIU have received federal designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education, and UM is a leading private institution with significant diversity. The innovative Florida Summer Institute in Biostatistics and Data Science introduces rigorous quantitative careers to young

adults from varied backgrounds through the combined efforts of these three ethnically diverse institutions.

“We successfully recruited students nationally from groups typically underrepresented in the biomedical sciences for our inaugural program, which ended in June,” said Katherine Freeman, Dr.PH, principal investigator, professor of biomedical science in FAU’s Schmidt College of Medicine, and biostatistics collaborative core leader at FAU. “Although the curriculum encompasses basic, advanced and cutting-edge statistical and data science methods delivered in ways to engage students, it also highlights scientific communication, collab-

orative skills, project teamwork, social interactions and career guidance.”

Participants in the summer program learn the principles of applied biostatistics and data science from recognized experts in the field, meet and learn from practicing biostatisticians and investigators engaged in clinical research, and gain hands-on experience working with data collected in internationally recognized studies. In addition, students benefit from a stimulating environment of education and mentoring to introduce and explore an evergrowing field that makes a positive impact on health and quality of life.

The Florida Summer Institute in Biostatistics and Data Science will continue to recruit nationally over the next four years to enroll about 75 qualified undergraduate and early graduate students with requisite mathematics, statistics and science coursework and a budding interest in health. In addition, alumni will retain mentorships with faculty and have access to revised curriculums for five years after completion of the program.

Palm Beach State College, along with members of community organizations and the military, paused to remember the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks Sept. 8 in a College memorial ceremony titled “Remember the Fallen 9/11” held at its Palm Beach Gardens campus amphitheater.

Narrated by PBSC Student Development Manager Ashton Davis, the event was open to the public and featured moments of silence, facts about the attacks and remarks from PBSC staff and community members including PBSC President Ava L. Parker, J.D., Palm Beach Gardens campus Provost Nikka Coleman-Ferrell, Ed.D., and guest speaker Vincent Morton, PBSC’s criminal justice director.

Parker spoke about the importance of holding events like these not just to remember that day but to teach those who were born after the attacks happened.

“These events are important reminders for students on what unity can look like in the United States,” Parker said. “I’m hoping as students hear this, and in particular those who weren’t born yet, they can not only recognize what happened but also learn that was a time when we set aside our differences and we were all Americans first.”

Adding to Parker’s remarks was Davis, who was on active duty with the U.S. Army when the tragedy happened.

“It’s important that we know it’s possible that the country can come together like this and to keep it in the forefront of our minds,” said Davis, who deployed twice to Iraq after the attacks.

Another member of the U.S. Army at the time of the tragedy was Morton, who was introduced to the crowd

by PBSC Palm Beach Gardens Student Government Association President Joe Kleinhenz. That day, Morton was stationed in Fort Myers, Va. as a member of the Army’s drill team.

OBITUARY Eva M. Stewart.

Dec 4, 1921 -Sep 3, 2022 (Age 100) Eva Stewart, age 100, passed away peacefully in Naples Florida on September 3, 2022, in the company of her son.

During a vacation in Miami, Eva fell in love with Florida. This led to a move to Miami and a career as a flight attendant with National Airlines (Pan American). While living in Miami she met Lynn Stewart, a Marine Fighter Pilot, Patuxent River Naval Test Pilot School graduate and decorated veteran of two wars. Lynn and Eva married and had their son Larry. Upon Lt. Col. Lynn Stewart’s retirement in 1962, the family moved to Boca Raton.

In Boca Raton, Eva directed her energy into family, education, spiritual values and community affairs.

A devoted mother, Eva stressed education and spiritual values. This led to her enrolling her son in Saint Andrews School in Boca Raton. One of her greatest satisfactions was affiliation with Saint Andrew’s.

At Saint Andrew’s, she served 3 years with the Mothers Association, with the last year as its President. Following her son’s graduation, Eva stayed connected to the school, doing educational and international student travel, as well as resuming her personal world travel with her husband, to further experience diverse cultures, climates

and histories.

Eva was self-educating, using reading, prayer and reflection. Her readings included spiritual literature, as well as subscriptions to the Wall Street Journal and the Economist. She was constantly learning and evolving, yet stayed grounded in a deep spirituality.

Her memorable contributions to the community included serving with United Way of South Palm Beach, where she was 4 years on the Board of Directors and a Galleon Club co-chair. Other roles included working as a fundraising volunteer for both the building of the Boca Raton Community Hospital (Debbie-Rand) and the YMCA. Eva also enjoyed being a member of the Boca Raton Historical Society, where she studied the town’s history and led historical tours of the Boca Raton Hotel & Club.

Eva never lost her love of Florida and treasured her 40 years as a resident of Boca Raton. She was delighted as she watched the growth and changes that occurred with both Saint Andrew’s and Boca Raton.

She is survived by son Larry, a retired software engineer residing in Austin Texas, and is preceded in death by her husband.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no services, and the internment of the cremated remains will be at Arlington National Cemetery with her husband.

Boca Raton Leaders Appointed to Florida League of Cities Legislative Policy Committees The Florida League of Cities, the united voice for Florida’s municipal governments, announced that City of Boca Raton Deputy City Manager George Brown, and Council Member Yvette Drucker were recently appointed to serve on the Florida League of Cities 20222023 Legislative Policy Committees. Brown will serve on the Municipal Administration Policy Committee, while Drucker will serve on the Transportation and Intergovernmental Relations Policy Committee, representing two of the League’s five Legislative Policy Committees.

As Legislative Policy Committee members, Brown and Drucker will help develop the League’s Legislative Action Agenda, which details priority issues that are most likely to affect daily municipal governance and local decisionmaking during the upcoming legislative session, as well as help League staff understand the real-world implications of proposed legislation. Committee members are also asked to serve as advocates for local decision-making throughout the legislative process.

The Junior League of Boca Raton (JLBR) Learning Libraries committee donated 350 books to two teachers at Whispering Pines Elementary in Boca Raton and Plumosa School of the Arts in Delray Beach. Teachers were invited to apply for a classroom library refresh.

Emily Mox, of Plumo sa School a n d Lyndsey Salvesen of Whispering Pines, both Kindergarten teachers, were chosen by the committee from the applicants. Co-chairs Ami Zak and Valentina Moretti delivered the books.

“We’re so pleased to be able to provide these two classrooms

with new books for the start of the school year and look forward to providing more books to additional classrooms throughout the year,” Jamie Sauer, President of the Junior League of Boca Raton said.

JLBR’s Learning Libraries committee aims to create a culture of reading that helps improve children’s literacy development.

FAU Receives “Insight into Diversity” 2022 HEED Award

Florida Atlantic University has received the 2022 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. As a recipient of the annual HEED Award — a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion — FAU will be featured, along with 102 other recipients, in the November issue of the magazine. This is the second year that FAU has been named as a HEED Award recipient.

“Florida Atlantic was founded on the principle that higher education should be available to everyone, regardless of their background,” said FAU President John Kelly. “As one of the nation’s most diverse public institutions, Florida Atlantic prioritizes both access and academ-

INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected FAU for its high level of achievement and intensity of commitment to broadening diversity and inclusion on campus through initiatives, programs, and outreach; student recruitment, retention, and completion; and hiring practices for faculty and staff.

“The HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees — and best practices for both — leadership support for diversity, campus culture and climate, supplier diversity, and many other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion,” said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “We take a detailed approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient. Jewish Federation Family’s Generosity Supports Safety One Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s (JFSPBC) family’s generosity is going a long way toward promoting safety in the local Jewish community. Jeff and Nicole Goldberg of East Boca Raton provided a significant philanthropic gift to underwrite Stop the Bleed® kits for use in emergency response and community training.

Two years ago, the JFSPBC partnered with the Secure Community Network (SCN), the official safety and security organization of the Jewish community in North America, to establish a community security prog ram in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and Highland Beach. Since then, Federation’s Community Security Director Alan Poland has been working alongside Jewish organizations in the community to enhance their preparedness and resiliency. This goal is accomplished through conducting facility assessments, drafting emergency procedures, enhanc-

ing physical security, liaising with law enforcement and emergency response partners, and sharing intelligence and training.

The three core pieces of training provided in the community are BeAware, Countering Active Threat Training (CATT), and Stop the Bleed®.

BeAware is a situational awareness training that teaches attendees how to recognize suspicious and potentially dangerous behavior and activities and what to do if this should occur. CATT covers what to do if faced with an active threat, including preparing in advance, committing to action using the principles of “RunHide-Fight,” and what to do when law enforcement arrives. Stop the Bleed® provides skills to prevent the loss of life due to injuries that cause heavy bleeding by teaching attendees how to use direct pressure, pack a deep wound, and utilize a tourniquet properly.

FAU Launches Health Equity Nursing Scholars Program Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing recently launched a new scholarship program through the support of Florida Blue Foundation and the Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation. The first-of-its-kind Health Equity Nursing Scholars (HENS) Program is designed to improve health equity in communities nationwide.

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the data show that racial and ethnic minority groups throughout the U.S. experience higher rates of illness and death across a wide range of health conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, obesity, asthma, and heart disease, when compared to their white counterparts. In addition, the life expectancy of non-Hispanic/black Americans is four years lower than that of white Americans. The COVID-19 pandemic and its disproportionate impact among racial and ethnic minority populations is another stark example of these enduring health disparities.

Through a three-pronged approach, FAU’s College of Nursing and Florida Blue Foundation are poised to shift the status quo in underserved health care communities in South Florida and beyond. HENS will support a cohort of eight diverse, exemplary Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree students and two Master of Science in Nursing students each year. Through scholarships and programming, Florida Blue Foundation is providing student resources to help create

opportunities and remove barriers for students and community members.

Co-directors of the HENS program at FAU are the College of Nursing’s Christine Toledo, Ph.D., APRN, an assistant professor and a bilingual registered nurse and certified nurse practitioner; and Nadine Phillips, an instructor and a registered nurse who has worked in various capacities for Broward Health for more than 23 years.

“Our HENS scholars will intentionally learn about the social determinants of health, how to ensure health equity, and how to apply integrative health care, both in primary care and behavioral health integration, and understand the importance of crosssector collaboration and inter-professional practice,” said Toledo.

HENS scholarship recipients will receive $5,000 per year for up to four years and will serve as student representatives on the

c o l l e g e ’s Inclusivity, Diversity, and Equity Taskforce.

Each student will complete clinical rotations at local facilities including the FAU and Northwest Community Health Alliance’s Community Health Center (FAU/NCHA CHC), operated by the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing.

The FAU/NCHA CHC provides comprehensive primary, behavioral health and preventive care to patients of all ages in Palm Beach County’s underserved and rural areas. The HENS curricula and onsite immersion clinical training will allow the FAU/ NCHA CHC to serve more than 1,700 underserved patients over the course of six months.

HENS scholars also will be trained and mentored by faculty mentors and preceptors; attend monthly seminars on health equity topics with other health equity peers; and develop a quality improvement or evi-

dence-based practice project.

“We are extremely grateful to Florida Blue Foundation and the Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation for supporting outstanding nursing students and the vital services the College of Nursing provides for underserved communities in South Florida,” said Safiya George, Ph.D., dean, FAU Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing. “The ‘Future of Nursing 2020-2030’ report calls for the entire nursing industry, including health care institutions, organizations, government agencies and nursing programs to support the vital role of nurses in helping to achieve health equity. The Health Equity Nursing Scholars program will make an immediate community impact in the areas of primary and pediatric care, chronic disease management, telehealth, and behavioral health and will transform the approach to addressing health inequities to ensure patients receive optimal care.”

According to the CDC, black men are 70 percent more likely to die from a stroke as compared to non-Hispanic white men. Likely due to under-diagnosis, millennials from majority black and Hispanic communities have lower diagnosis rates of major depression, 31 and 55 percent lower respectively, when compared to white communities. Black adults are 60 percent more likely than nonHispanic white adults to be diagnosed with diabetes; and black mothers have three times higher mortality and two times higher morbidity rates than white mothers.
