Here’s your first chance to break out the crayons. Initially built as a 65-foot lighthouse with wooden stairs, Cape Florida Light- house guided sailors and served as a lookout to protect the area from the pirates and other invaders that had been posing dangers to Florida throughout the 1700s and early 1800s. The image on the left is an illustration based on the style of Dutch Master Painter Johannes Vermeer. He was known for the use of light, particulaly natural light from an open window.

Here’s your chance to pick between two versions. The top photo is an original by G. Richard Booth. The lower is an interpretation of how the scene could have been portrayed by Dutch Master Painter Johannes Vermeer.

Vermeer was known for his use of light and soft muted colors. He was ranked with Rembrandt as one of the most admired Dutch

artists. Born in 1632, he pro- duced only 36 known paintings. The most famous likely was Girl with a Pearl Earring, which was the inspiration for a 2004 movie of the same name starring Colin Firth and Scarlett Johannsen.

Alandmark in Lauderdale by the Sea, Anglin’s Fishing Pier is shown here before it was seriously damaged by Hurricane Nicole in 2022. It is closed to the public until engineers can deter- mine the full extent of the damage and how it can be restored.

According to an article last year in Southern Living, Lauderdale- by-the-Sea was described as

“a South Florida Beach Town Straight Out of A Norman Rockwell Painting.”

“Similar to the effect of a Southern double name, “by-the-sea” communities are inherently charming and tend to respect tradition. They’re quiet but never boring, cheerfully bustling but not overcrowded. The idyl- lic South Florida beach hamlet

Lauderdale-By-The-Sea offers all of these things and more.

“The streets become lined with twinkle lightwrapped palm trees, and the extra-wide sidewalks are speckled with outdoor dining tables and flip-flop-wearing locals.

“The change of pace is palpable. The sun seems to shine a little

brighter, giving everything a candy-coated gleam, and the soft breeze holds the faintest scent of saltwater. The only thing to do is exhale and obey the town’s tagline: “Relax… you’re here.”
