I hope you all had the chance to read the previous two editions. If you haven’t, you should check them out! Now, the final edition of the magazine for the year gives you the opportunity to embark on a journey through time with creative pieces that go beyond the present. As you delve into the following articles, my hope is that they transport you to different eras in life. Have a great summer holiday and stay tuned for the next school year’s editions! 18TH CENTURY ARTWORKS

In the vibrant canvas of the art world, we explore various styles and visions. Among these, modern art stands tall, known for its hidden depths. Step back in time to the 18th century, when the world of art was limited; only certain people were encouraged and given the opportunities to learn art and paint. While these pieces of art primarily emphasize the visual aspect, numerous stunning works have managed to encapsulate much more than a mere moment. Allow me to introduce two artworks painted by artists who both happen to bear the name John: John Constable and John Singer Sargent.

Willy Lott's House John Constable, 1802

“Willy Lott's House” by John Constable, painted in 1816, is a timeless masterpiece capturing the essence of English countryside life during the Romantic era. This work showcases a symmetrical composition with the charming farmhouse owned by Willy Lott at its center, framed by lush greenery and a meandering Stour River. Constable’s mastery is evident as he skilfully portray the changing weather, infusing the scene

with a sense of serenity and the fleeting beauty of nature. His meticulous attention to detail, particularly in rendering the thatched roof, timber beams, and foliage, creates an immersive, lifelike experience. The painting's emotional resonance and its influence on the Romantic movement make it an enduring tribute to rural existence and the profound connection between art and nature. 06

Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose John Singer Sargent, 1885-6 John Singer Sargent's "Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose" is a poignant depiction of two young girls gently lighting lanterns in a garden at dusk. This masterpiece exemplifies Sargent's Impressionist style, which he began to experiment with in his private work. The title of the painting is drawn from a popular song by composer Joseph Mazzinghi, a favourite among Sargent and his circle. The central subjects of the painting are Dolly and Polly, aged 11 and 7, respectively, who were the daughters of Sargent's friend, the illustrator Frederick Barnard. The girls, dressed in pristine white, stand amidst lush foliage and vibrant flowers, creating a scene that exudes innocence and purity. The choice of flowers carries symbolic weight, with lilies representing humility, devotion, purity, and innocence, roses signifying love and passion, and carnations embodying love, fascination, and distinction. Sargent's Impressionist style is exemplified by the painting's ethereal use of light and colour, creating a dreamy, atmospheric effect. This technique captures a fleeting moment of beauty and childhood wonder. When "Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose" was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1887, it garnered both acclaim and criticism. Eventually, it found its permanent home in the Tate Gallery in 1887, where it remains an integral part of their collection. In sum, this remarkable artwork stands as a testament to Sargent's mastery of Impressionist technique, symbolizing childhood innocence and beauty through its skilful use of light, colour, and symbolism.

The Evolution of Music from the 1940s till now by Marc Travill

In our everyday lives, we encounter this magical feeling. Music surrounds us. On the radio, a post on social media when you’re walking in the mall. But where did music first originate from? Let's take a trip down memory lane and explore the fantastic and intriguing journey that music has endured over the past decades; from the 1940s until now. We should not forget the musical legends that once dominated the music world. The early 1940s were built around jazz and big band styles. This music genre was born around the time of World War II. It was also around this time that many artists made a breakthrough and left their mark on the history of music. Famous artists such as Rosemary Clooney, Count Basie, and Artie Shaw helped further define where the music era was moving into. An interesting fact is that the first electric guitar body was created by, Les Paul in 1941. Throughout this time period, the music industry was greatly influenced by patriotism and World War II. This has led to artists like Kate Smith releasing a version of Irving Berlin's song "God Bless America" which topped the charts and was released again in 1940 and 1942, remaining popular with each release. Moving forward in time we have yet to discover the 1960s and 80s taking a dive into the rock and roll music that we all know of and love. We get to discover artists like Queen, Guns & Roses, and much more.

Below you will find a timeline of brief points on the evolution of music through time: 1970s: Diverse Genres and the Disco Era The 1970s brought a diversification of music genres, from the disco craze with artists like Donna Summer, to the rise of punk rock with bands like The Sex Pistols. Progressive rock, funk, and soul also gained prominence, with acts like Pink Floyd, James Brown, and Stevie Wonder. The development of synthesizers and electronic instruments began to shape the music landscape. 1980s: The Pop Dominance and Hip-Hop Emergence The 1980s were characterized by the dominance of pop music, led by artists like Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Prince. The emergence of hip-hop in the Bronx marked a significant cultural shift. Rap pioneers like Grandmaster Flash and Run-D.M.C. paved the way for the genre's global popularity. MTV launched in 1981, revolutionizing the music industry by bringing music videos to a mass audience. The 1990s: The Rise of Alternative and Digital Revolution The 1990s saw the rise of alternative rock, with bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Radiohead challenging the mainstream. Hip-hop continued to evolve with artists like Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. The digital revolution began with the advent of the internet and the MP3 format, changing how music was distributed and consumed. 2000s: Digital Music and Genre Blending The 2000s witnessed the dominance of digital music platforms like iTunes and the proliferation of illegal downloading. Genres became more fluid, leading to the rise of crossover artists like Beyoncé, who blended pop, R&B, and hip-hop. Indie and electronic music gained popularity, with acts like The White Stripes and Daft Punk achieving mainstream success. 2010s: Streaming Dominance and Globalization Streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music became the primary way people consumed music. Genre boundaries continued to blur, with artists experimenting across various styles. K-pop, reggaeton, and Latin music saw global recognition, highlighting the impact of cultural globalization. 2020s: Continued Innovation and Diversity The evolution of music from the 1960s to the present day reflects the changing cultural, technological, and artistic landscape of society. Each decade has brought new sounds, movements, and innovations, contributing to the rich tapestry of musical history. The future of music will likely continue to be shaped by advancements in technology, shifts in culture, and the creative exploration of artists around the world.

Echoes of the past

On a bright morning, Emma, a young woman, walked into the bookstore as the gentle sunshine peaked through the shabby drapes. She had a strong attraction to the appeal of the past, and this small business had a particular attractiveness for her. The hardwood flooring, which squeaked with each step, appeared to be whispering tales from bygone periods. As she explored the shelves, her fingers grazed the spines of antique novels and leather-bound journals. She couldn't help but feel a connection to the lives that had once been touched by these volumes. Her curiosity led her to an old, leather-bound diary tucked away in a corner named “Vintage Tales”, with pages filled with cursive handwriting speaking of a time long past. The journal related tales of lavish balls, horse-drawn carriages, and handwritten letters exchanged in the warmth of gaslight. Emma's reading was almost accompanied by the faint sounds of a waltz and the rustle of a silk dress. Driven by a fresh curiosity, Emma started looking into the town's past. She discovered old pictures of the grand town hall, now just a ghost of what it once was, and busy market areas. Elderly inhabitants of the community were interviewed; they regaled her with tales of their childhood, of a period when neighbors knew one another by name and conversed across picket fences. One day, while walking along the cobblestone streets, Emma stumbled upon an old, overgrown garden. She recognized it from Evelyn's diary, a place where lovers had stolen kisses beneath the fragrant roses. Emma took it upon herself to bring the garden back to its former splendor with a feeling of purpose. She recruited the assistance of the locals, and together they planted, trimmed, and gave the neglected blossoms new life. As the garden flourished, so did the town's spirit. Emily's efforts rekindled a sense of community and connection among the residents. They organized an old-fashioned fair, complete with vintage clothing and dances from yesteryears. The air was filled with the sounds of laughing and forgotten music. As she sat in the restored garden, surrounded by the beauty of the past and the warmth of newfound friendships, Emma couldn't help but feel grateful for her journey through time.

Which lesser-known human factors are contributing to global warming?

Fishing the past from the disposal Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth. Baz Luhrmann’s classic line from his Sunscreen has always resonated with me. Every year, as a group of 100 students take their last steps on the LBIS stage, a sweeping sense of pride engulfs me. “I remember these kids when they first came through the gates of Bocage”, I reminisce as they walk across the stage with their bits of paper in hand, and a proud, albeit silly, grin on their faces. Then comes the moment when I make the long walk up to the stage to give my “Head’s Address”. This is my opportunity to fish through my disposal, wipe it off and regurgitate the memories, sometimes with the ugly parts painted over, but more often than not left bare and exposed. My message is always based on my experiences with the purpose of providing guidance, and if nothing else, serving as a warning. My annual self-proclaimed words of wisdom will not deviate from this year’s Graduation, with a strong theme on taking those chances that come your way. I will up the level of cheese using the lyrical maestro, the Real Shady, by asking the Graduates: Look, if you had one shot or one opportunity To seize everything you ever wanted in one moment Would you capture it or just let it slip? Throughout my life, I believe I have always tried to capture those moments, and I while I do not agree that you only ever get just the one shot, when you do get one (and there will be plenty), take it. The greatest lie you can ever tell yourself is that when you get what you want you will be happy. You have to remain hungry and strive for new experiences, and ultimately, fill that bank of memories. Taking those shots that come my way have led me to travel the world and meet the most fascinating people, and in so doing I have created a life, a plethora of experiences and memories, and most importantly, my beautiful family; and hopefully these will continue to live even after I don’t! When I look back on these experiences, I get a sense of satisfaction, of accomplishment, and a genuine sense of joy, with maybe only a little bit of painting over the ugly parts…

12 years ago, I took the shot to come to Mauritius. People thought I was mad to leave the Caribbean (maybe I was), fly half way around the world, and set up sticks on this little island in the middle of the Indian Ocean. However, reminiscing now, it has been an incredible 11 years of my life, and one that is full of experiences that I can look back upon with great fondness. Ultimately, the relationships that I have created give me the best memories, and often those I have had with my students are the ones that have been the most meaningful. Typically, those relationships only fully develop when students are in their latter years when they realise that I am actually on their side (maybe it takes them five years to see me as half human, and not only the lunch-time device police). These are the memories that will remain with me, and they will undoubtedly bring a smile to my face on some random Wednesday afternoon. So, when I address the Class of 2023 (a group I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing grow over the last 7 years) I will be sure to dish out my usual anecdotes identifying those shots I’ve taken (some of which missed) and the lessons learned. It will be my last Graduation at LBIS, and I am sure one that will be quite emotional for me, but one that will be full of nostalgia and cherished memories. Life is all about producing those memories, but in order to make them, you need to take the occasional chance. You are not always in control of the outcome, but if you don’t take those shots that come your way, instead always playing safe, I can assure you that when looking back at your life in 40 years’ time you will rue not listening to The Real Slim Shady when he told you that you only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow. This opportunity comes once in a lifetime, yo!

A Past Of Prosperity and Poverty reviewed by Diganto Das

The Great Gatsby F Scott Fitzgerald Introduction :

Does overindulgence make life truly fulfilling? In an age of abundance, do those with few experience more joy than those with plenty? This is exactly what is presented in the novel“The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The Great Gatsby is a renowned classic of English literature which reflects on the lifestyle of the Roaring Twenties and reflects on the importance of true happiness and satisfactions. Played out in the background of Long Island’s North Shore, it unmasks the struggles and challenges of the rich and their extravagant lifestyles. The story follows our hero, Nick Carraway, as he befriends and learns about the mysterious life story of the self made millionaire, Jay Gatsby. Through his adventures he learns about the strange history of his friend and finally watches him succumb to his scandalous nature. Summary : The novel is set in the period between 1910-20’s referred to as“The Roaring Twenties”in America which saw a sharp rise in economic prosperity, social advancements and a carefree lifestyle. This abundance of wealth allowed people to live lavish lifestyles and drinking, smoking and partying came into fashion. Set in this background the author follows the tales of Nick Carraway, a young working man, and Jay Gatsby, an extravagant millionaire. Nick is cousins with Daisy Buchanan, who is married to a wealthy but morally corrupt businessman, Tom Buchanan. The story follows the disillusioned Gatsby’s efforts to ignite Daisy’s lost love for him, which ultimately leads to his demise. The story serves as a cautionary tale about the corrupting power of human greed and its desire for pleasure. The Fab Factor : The book vividly captures the themes related to society and lifestyles through contrasting characters that give a perspective into the human desire for pleasure. The characters' aspirations and actions give an insight into humans and their desires and complex feelings. Characters such as Tom Buchanan represent the hollow and dark personalities of the upper class, in contrast to the refined and charming nature of Jay Gatsby. The book shows the depravity and social issues of their time through Tom such as extramarital affairs, domestic abuse and a decay of moral and ethical standards. It gives a fantastical reflection on the depravity and soullessness of the “American Dream” and the facade of opulence and prestige shown by the upper classes. The Slight Slip-Up : While the book is a timeless piece of English literature that is critically acclaimed for its brilliance, like all books, it has some flaws. The most evident is the narrative structure which is patchy and sometimes difficult to follow. The lack of different perspectives and a sole focus on the narrator may also give readers an unsatisfying ending. The book has also been criticized for its high amounts of materialism and superficiality which makes it difficult to relate to and understand. This leaves readers uninterested and the materialism also drags down the story. Conclusion : In conclusion, “The Great Gatsby” is a timeless literature piece that is a true reflection on the hollowness and soullessness of materialism and the corrupting power of wealth. The story provides wise commentary on the materialistic values that are prevalent in society today. The book allows much discussion and it has a deep dive on several themes such as love, greed, disillusionment and obsession. It is a true example of the quote by Lord Acton : " Absolute power corrupts absolutely”. 16

For me, there is no heaven and hell, no all-loving god or nightmarish devil, there is only the mind and the way I perceive, understand, and comprehend. From the moment I was born; the one thing I understood above all else is time, and how nightmarish it truely is. Time’s fishhook has always caught and reeled me in, from the moment I remember first being alive, up till now, as a fourteen year old boy. Time has been one of the birthplaces of agony; Time forces me to exist, an existence I never asked for, Time tortures me like nothing else, it drains my beating heart dry. Why, oh why, must we be forced to perceive? Why, oh why must we be forced to live with time as our puppet master and we as marionnettes? Life has always been better when we lost track of time, hasn’t it? Time fills my heart, my mind, my soul with dread. If it does not rid me now, it will eventually; I care not that it will rid my body, I care that it will wither my soul of all joy while I exist at its mercy. I have always asked, ever since I was nine; “Why must we exist? Why must time drag me out and then kill me? Why even be born then?” Even now that nine year old boy knows no answer, and now I believe he never will. The nine year old boy and the now fourteen year old boy will never appreciate time; he knows that the clock is ticking, ticking and ticking, his final countdown has begun from the moment he was born, and there is no stopping it, no reason to stop it, no way to stop it. The fourteen year old boy does not appreciate time, for time is his murderer, his guillotine, the rope in which he is to be hung. Time will always be the boys butcher, his Jack the Ripper, the thing created to cause him misery and agony, the sword in which he is impaled with, as his lifeless corpse decomposes and his soul lives for far too long, remembered by others or not. For the boy; the nightmare that is time is unending, there is no real solution besides to make the best of it before it kills you. I, I am that boy, the one who was once nine and is now fourteen, still with unanswerable questions, still with his hellish perception of time, still the boy who will be murdered by time.

Different diseases and how they changed people’s lives As we all know, the world has gone through hard times with the outbreak of Covid-19 but there has been worse! Our planet has been through a lot in the past. I will write about the top 3 deadliest diseases that there ever was and how it affected us.

1. The Black Death The Black Death is a disease that has occurred from 1346 to 1353. It originally started in Western Eurasia and North Africa but it eventually spread. You might think that around 1000 people died from the black death but no! This illness has killed around 75 to 200 million people. Another name for this malady is The Pestilence/ The Great Mortality or The Plague. Some of the main symptoms are fever, sore throat and weakness. The Black Death has changed a lot of people and their lifestyles back in the days, but did you know that it is still affecting some people nowadays? According to researchers, “genes that historically provided immunity to the plague are now associated with a greater vulnerability to autoimmune illnesses including Crohn's and rheumatoid arthritis.”

2. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome(SARS)/Coronavirus(Covid-19) I know for sure that some of you have asked yourself “why is it called Covid-19?” “Were there other diseases called Covid before?” Well SARS was the ﬁrst Covid to exist! SARS was caused by Covid-19. This disease occurred in November 2002 and lasted 2 years. I don't think I'll need to get into details about the syndromes because we all went through that but I guess covid-19 was more powerful than Covid-1 because there were “only” 8,096 cases in total. Not that 8,096 people is not a lot but compared to Covid-19, it has gotten over 696,314,799 cases and 69,23,950 deaths! And since Covid19 severely attacked us recently, it affected us in a lot of ways. It either affected our health or our hygiene or for some of us, it affected our self esteem/self conﬁdence. But as the saying goes “everything happens for a reason” because even of covid was a hard time for most of us, there was a bright side of the pandemic occurring. 3. Polio One of the most known diseases, but it was very deadly. This contagious malady caused a major outbreak in New York City in 1916 killed over 2000 people, and the worst recorded US outbreak in 1952 killed over 3000. Many who survived the disease faced lifelong consequences. Its peak was in the 1940s and 1950s. Polio would paralyze or kill over half a million people worldwide every year. The symptoms are pretty similar to any other diseases (fever and sore throat) plus stifness in the neck and pain in the arms and legs. This might sound like a boring thing to read but trust me. It's fascinating to see what the world has gone through.

Some of these trends have even resurfaced in modern fashion styles. It's been coming back in trend as it's very nostalgic and some people want to revisit and relive their teenage days. Some popular brands from that period included Juicy Couture, Abercrombie and Fitch, and Ed Hardy.

Reminiscent of the Grateful Dead, this poster was meant to act as an advertisement for an album or a single. Ferdinand Magellan, credited with the first circumnavigation of the globe (hence the title), stands on his boat. His skull head is a reference to the fact that Magellan passed away before the circumnavigation was completed. In the center of the boat there is also an image of the globe, another reference to the famed circumnavigation. The common border element is shared in all the posters as it was a staple of making advertisements in the 80's.

DISCOVER FIRE B.c. TOUR

This poster depicting the discovery of fire by cavemen, was meant to act as a tour poster. Of course 'B.C. Tour' is a reference to the fact that the only thing we know about the time of the discovery of fire was that it was in the years B.C. The inspiration was more discreet in this poster. I was mostly trying to capture the same Sci-Fi elements seen in posters for Blue Öyster Cult and Def Leppard. In the background there are simple drawings such as could be found in caves inhabited by early men.

SUFFRAGE FOR women

This is a typical concert poster advertising Women's Suffrage of the 1920s. Stylistically, it is similar to posters for bands such as Guns N' Roses or Blondie opting for a minimal color palette and necessary dates, times and locations for the 'concert'.Of course there are references to the suffragettes like the recognizable sash and the wide brimmed floral hats. The conservative and respectable suffragettes contrasted well with the excited and loud culture of rock and roll and made this idea all the more appealing to me.

DOWN THE 70‘s ROAD

by Naadirah Nabeemeeah My artwork ‘Down the 70’s road’ captures the feel and aesthetic of the 70’s including popular classics as seen. The popularity of bright neon signs around the artwork can be seen which was also sparked from the popularity of discos. The colour palette in the artwork ranges from popular dark teals to different shades of oranges as well as dusty sage greens. The two characters in the artwork wear classic fashion staples from the era, from the broad pants to denim dresses as seen on the characters as well as their hair done in that style. The architecture is also inspired by busy cities in the 70’s with tall buildings of apartments as well as the trend of having greenery inside and outside of peoples homes.

REMEMBER ME? In this art, you see Charlie Chaplin, who was a big silent film star a long time ago. There's a VHS tape on top of him. That's like an old video thing people used before DVDs. This art takes us back to the past, when film and TV were different. It's a bit like saying, "Hey, remember those good old days when Charlie Chaplin was famous? It's a nice way to remind us of old times and how things have changed. 29
