TheWoollyMammothwasaprehistoricmemberoftheelephantfamily.Well adaptedtolivinginacoldclimate,itwascoveredinfurwithanoutercovering oflongguardhairs.Theappearanceofthewoollymammouthisprobablythebest knownofanyprehistoricspecieshavingbeendepictedincavepaintingsand discoveredfrozeninSiberiaandAlaska.Modernhumanscoexistedwithwoolly mammouthsduringtheUpperPaleolithicperiodsome30-40,000yearsago. Afterhavingsufferedasubstantiallossoftheirhabitatduetoclimatechange, humanshuntedthelastremainingpopulationstoextinctionapproximately 10,000yearsago.

Pupfishcanliveinwaterthatrangesintemperaturefromfreezingtonearlyboilingandwater3timesas saltyastheocean.InthePleistocene,theMojaveDesertwasamuchwetterplace.Asthelargelakesdried upthereweresmallspringsandpoolsleftbehind.Asthepoolsbecamesmaller,thefishinhabitingthemdid aswell.TheTecopaPupfishlivedintheoutflowsofNorthandSouthTecopaHotSpringsbutbegantpo disappearintheearly1940swhenthespringswereturnedintocanals,bathhousesandhotels.Thelast TecopaPupfishwasseenin1970.
