Foreword This collection of meditations on love is in four sections. It follows a journey through love from its beginnings, flowering, beyond break up and loss to an understanding which accepts that love needs to combine with freedom.

Each of the lyrical poems marks a stage within the cycle. The imagery draws on the seasons, weather and other phenomena of the natural world and touches occasionally on iconic objects in the man-made world. There is a rhythmic, dreamlike flow through thoughts and feelings. The abstracts interleaved with the poems reflect the mood of each. They are integral to the sequence.

What is the meaning of your name? Your name is like

The swallows that soar, with a chorus that breaks the winters grasp, A yellow crocus that pierces frozen soil, The gold leaf that adorns stone statues, mirroring the morning sun.

Freedom and light, night and day, sun and moon.

Your name is reflected in sparkling streams, It is found as treasures discovered in the deepest oceans, In the lakes in which people cast their dreams.

It is the poem, it is the song, it is the vision.

All the birds migrate to foreign lands to listen, All the trees sway in the breeze to hear its sound, And what is the name they wish to hear?

It is yours.

Spin Drift In the harbour, that walls, sheltered boats.

The sea, laps into rock pools, that house

white crabs, sea urchins, rock bass.

We made our promise, in words carried by sea spray.

Whispering, a moment, within ebb and flow.

I love you, I love you too, I love you.

In the Picture house

Shining through the veil of summer screenings, Dreams played out into future’s light. Projection entered sea side’s shadow, A memory cast onto the cinema wall.

Hand holds hand. Breast touches breast. Eye meets eye.

As love, Always still, Watches the drama unfold in other people’s lives.

Drawn

Gentle is the light, that reflects on dappled stone.

Sensitive is the touch, of hand against skin.

As delicate as love, As delicate as life.

As reflections fade In this evenings tide.

Spring Night

At night we walk on jewel cast pathways, Which glisten in moonlight’s wonder, Exchanging glances through our solitude.

You the stars, me the moon. You the moon, me the stars.

We breathe in galaxies and breathe out an embrace. Amazed that time has quietened from its rushing torrent, Into a lake on which ripples are just a memory.

Worlds through glass

In the rain, The world reflects, in drops that hang from cast iron staircase, As chatter permeates from kitchen workplace, Echoing, sparrows with baritone voices.

And then I think of you, Lying waiting in expectation,

Your attention, now drawn to drops through glass, Reflecting the world outside, your side of the window

.

Breath from the silent lake In the mirrored moon, On night’s blue lake, Gold carp spawn amongst, Reeds touched with glass.

Candle wax drips, Through crystal’s light, Into a pool, Behind closed doors.

In the mist, Formed from the embrace, Boats are sent out , From where lovers part.

A raft to journey, To other shores, And bring back the memory, Where beauty met desire.

Rivers Parting.

On a bench we sat, by streams banked with grass.

Jewelery made from water, where regrets dissipate, into light’s flickering promise.

Silver polished.

Emerald faceted.

Embellishing memory’s silken robe, with a tapestry of small fish, that swim amongst reeds and sun’s reflection. .

In August In August - as days lie against the July sun, Your eyes shone, Reflecting the apex of sunlight’s shining.

It’s hard to say what changes clouds, A drop in temperature, Weariness to heat.

Forecasts were made - predicting storms, That brought chilling winds. Cutting through the warm comfort of hope’s ambition.

Winds that caused the fledgling to fall As a lifeless bird, And lie amongst last years autumn leaves.

Three Small Birds Three small birds, Flew into my heart, And made a nest between rock and cloud, A cleft in which they were laid to rest, A place in which earth became sky.

In the tomb that some call love, Songs are sung to journeys lost, Robin, Wren, Mistle thrush, Paid the cost, As spider lures and traps a fly.

Through a wood, behind the hill, Hearts of birds hang from a broken bough, In the morning when night leaves day, They fly, as song, to glisten in absent eyes.

Hemlock.

In romance which casts its shadowed spell, Battles fought more in mind than battlefield. Sharpening spears, To fling into spaces where ghosts once stood, Their evaporating footsteps, As silhouette, on stone slab floor.

Where once stood beauty, Now stands distortion.

Where once stood finery, Now powdered dust.

This is the poison within our mind troubled distortion, A hemlock drunk from past rejection and loss of trust. So, we drank a toast to each other’s destruction, Unaware of how each other played their part.

Loss is part of Love

Loss is part of love, Where rivers flow into the sea, A delta that fans it’s carried silt, Saline pollutes the mountain stream.

Beginning and end form one whole picture, Sun’s light dances on polished dreams, Reflection becomes our past and our future, As in this moment life touches life.

Deer on the Inside

Picture sadness as rain, It falls as droplets, Gathers as puddles, Flows as rivulets from pain.

From hills and mountains, A silver thread weaves, Through streams and rivers, Into a pool, it’s own reflection.

Take a drink of pure water, Like the white deer by the waters edge, First quench your own thirst, Now offer it to others.

Venus and Mars

Between us, A bridge that spans the shores of Aqua and Fire.

Where woman and man, Fuse in alchemy, Silver and Gold.

Sun illuminates Moon, Water quenches Flame.

A mirrored seduction In the conquest of Mars.

Kissing the sky

Sunbeams stream through crystal structures, Palaces constructed in glass refraction. A golden pathway. A golden trail.

Each breath inhales the breath of ancestors. Each breath exhales the same breath as yours.

In each kiss time sings its calling, Sundial shadow set, an everlasting hour.
