Par-3 Course Debut Golf enthusiasts will soon have a time-friendly golf experience with the addition of the new par-3 course at Birdwood Golf Course. Set to debut in fall 2020 the par-3 course has been designed with the small details in mind by PGA Professional Davis Love III and Love Golf Design. This unique course features six holes ranging anywhere from 80 to 145 yards each. Whether golfers are looking for a quick round on the links or squeezing in a tee time after work, the course offers an exciting, fast-paced option to complement the new 18-hole course. Designed to be played in under an hour, the par-3 will also serve as a great location for families to play together allowing young ones to learn and enjoy the game. The new short course will be the third installment in the reimagined golf facilities at the resort. The new par 71 18-hole championship course, anticipated to open
July 1, 2020, will have 6 sets of tees for a course playing from 3,856 to 7,116 yards. There is also an expansive putting course that's nearly one acre in size. “When we began developing the landscape and design of the golf course, we felt especially compelled to implement a par-3 course that caters to families, guests staying at the hotel for business and individuals looking to experience the entirety of the Birdwood Golf experience all in under an hour,” emphasized General Manager, Russ Cronberg. “What’s great about the par-3 course is that it plays very fast, which makes it extra appealing for families and individuals staying at the resort who may be short on time. Players will be hard-pressed to find a more enjoyable yet beautiful course that incorporates so much of Charlottesville’s surroundings. We believe it’s going to become an integral part of our new golf facilities moving forward.”
Birdwood is for the Birds With the new golf course targeted for July completion, there’s a lot of conversation about all of our new fairways and greens, but what many don’t know is that we have several local critters that call these new areas home. As an Audubon-certified course before the renovation and with plans to continue that stature with the new course, golfers may notice the bird boxes that lie just outside of the woodlands throughout the course. Maintained by Matt Wade, our course superintendent, and his team, Birdwood Golf Course is home to an elaborate eastern bluebird trail. Bluebirds are predictable little creatures and typically like to nest in open country just outside of wooded areas which makes a golf course a perfect home for these little feathered friends who typically show up to inhabit their boxes in early to mid-spring. These speedy flyers can soar up to 17 miles per hour and despite their flying power,
they are not strong enough to make holes in trees for their nests so we are more than happy to accommodate with habitable boxes throughout the course. Here’s the good news: although the new Davis Love III course design may be a little more challenging, rest assured that this course will certainly provide more birdies once it opens in July, no matter what your handicap! So Much to Explore on our Heritage Trails With a rolling 600 acre property there’s a lot to explore at Boar’s Head, and there’s no better way to see the sites than a stroll on our Heritage Trails System. These unique pathways are perfect for all skill levels. You may be surprised at what you’ll see while spending some time in the peacefulness of our trail system that connects with several miles of neighboring trails.
Heron Pond is just one of the several
ponds you’ll pass by while hiking the Heritage Trail System. On any given day, these ponds will be lined with popping wildflowers and native wildlife.
Families will love the start of the Heritage Trail System that begins adjacent to the parking area at the resort. The initial mile offers an easy-to-walk crushed gravel surface and flat terrain that meanders across bridges and alongside our ponds. All of the Boar’s Head trails are dogfriendly so when it’s time to release some energy, this is the perfect spot. Pet waste stations can be found on the lower trails around the hotel and are indicated on the trail map.
Not far off the main
grounds and into the more forested part of our trails, hikers are greeted with a historically unique civil-warera graveyard with stones dating back to the 1800s.
To extend your adventure,
the Boar’s Head trails connect with Foxhaven and Ragged Mountain trail systems. Owned by the City of Charlottesville, Ragged Mountain Park is a true gem that includes a floating bridge and numerous local wood carvings along the trail. MM
