URING the first six months of 1957,1 was transferred to Malden Island from Christmas Island to form A.W.R.E. Troop 71 Field Sqn. Royal Engineers.

The reason was that Malden Island was the base for instrument sites to measure the effects of the first HBomb tests of Operation Grapple.

We all remember wit­ nessing the three Hbomb blasts from the decks of the Flagship HMS Warrior.

To all who served out there, that tiny atoll of the Forward Area, i send best wishes.

Despite its isolation, Malden Island really did show the com­ bined services of Operation Grapple getting on with the task.

How we would bless that daily RAF Dakota service and supplies from HM ships, Warrior, Narvik and Messina - not forgetting the Royal Marines with the landing to shore operations.

Was it really nearly 40 years ago? Good luck to you all.

MERRY XMAS! A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE TO ALL BNTVA MEMBERS PETER Fletcher’s telephone call a few months ago interrupt­ ed a few days of feel­ ing sorry for myself.

In common with thousands throughout the country, I've been fighting off gastric influenza.

Compared with the body-wrack­ ing trials suffered by the veterans of Britain’s nuclear tests, my tem­ porary symptoms are scarcely worth mentioning, but they did make me feel miserable.

Perhaps that puts me in the right mood to write this Christmas message to all of you who have had to live, day by day, with pain, with debilitating weak­ ness and chronic ill-health.

I do know that the family nature of Christmas does help to make personal problems easier to bear, at least for a while.

I love everything about the festi­ val of peace and goodwill to all men, women and I do hope you feel well enough to enter into it with enthusiasm.

If that message of one thou­ sand, nine hundred and ninety

five years ago had been heeded by all, nuclear bomb tests would never have been necessary.

Have A Happy Christmas Gordon Parry AT the moment, the newspapers are full of ‘Gulf War Syndrome' and the suggestion that many of our servicemen have been affected by injections that they were given.

There is, rightly, great unease that such a thing could happen and, even worse, that anyone could think of hushing it up.

You, the members of the BNTVA, know how those lads and their families must be feel­ ing. You, like them, were serving the Crown (albeit in peacetime) when you received the radiation

which led to so many of your ill­ nesses - or so we believe.

Another year has passed and the season of goodwill is approaching. The circumstances of Jesus’s birth in an outhouse in the middle of the night all those years ago, have inspired many, many people to look for Him in their ordinary lives, to listen to His words and to try, as he did, to bring healing and peace to a troubled world.

May that same Jesus be very close to you and your families this Christmas and may he give special strength and hope to those of you who are ill.

A Happy Christmas and a joyful New Year to all members.

A FINAL TRIBUTE TO PHIL MUNN

PHIL MUNN

WHEN the campaign first started up in November 1982, I had writ­ ten to the Scottish Daily Record asking if any other servicemen who served at Christmas Island were also concerned about their health.

One of the first men to contact me was Phil Munn from East Kilbride as only the year before he had been diagnosed as suffer­ ing from “T” Cell Leukemia and had witnessed the first test at Christmas Island on November 8th, 1957.

Then on the 5lh May 1983 we drove down to Birmingham

BY KEN MeGINLEY University to meet the other founders of the BNTVA who were Rita and Terry Dale, Ron Tarran, lawyer Mark Mildred and Dr Alice Stewart. Sadly both Ron and Terry arc now deceased.

It was a long drive and we returned to Glasgow the same night. I would say we knocked it off because Phil and I had a simi­ lar nature and we had a special friendship.

In 1988, after the first NRPB study, Phil was at last granted the pension he had been denied, but

all this time he was continuously phoning and advising me of vari­ ous routes to follow. I lis advice was invaluable.

Phil passed away in September this year and I had lost a very dear friend. He is survived by his wife Tess and two sons, Stephen and Fraser.

In attendance at the funeral were Scottish rep Archie Loudon, David Hay, John Ross, and the Scottish Standard bearer Bob Smith and myself.

I’m sure the thoughts of every­ one who reads this will be with Tess and the family.

HE Christmas Island Veterans Reunion was held at Sand Bay Holiday Village in YVcston-Supcr-Marc from October 27-30 and it turned out to be a really wonder­ ful affair.

My husband John and I met up with Pam and Ken Taylor, Major John Downes and his wife Mollic and those of you in the R.E.S. on the Island will remember John Downes as a Captain who worked with Captain McLclland.

There were approximately 400 people, 250 veterans plus wives and it was all set to a Christmas theme so when we arrived it was ‘Christmas Eve*.

There were plenty of activities to get involved in if you wanted to. Nothing was left out and it was not regimented, just entirely up to you what you wanted to do.

John and I had a strange encounter on New Year’s Eve when we wandered into the coffee shop just before dinner and who should we bump into, but two young ladies we knew.

We couldn’t believe the coincidence so we asked: “What the hell arc you doing here.”

They started laughing and were lost for words. They said they were down on holiday, so we parted company saying we would meet them later for a drink.

Well, needless to say, I think the highlight of the week-end was the entertaining of the dancers from Christmas Island (we have plen­ ty of pictures of them). It reduced grown men to tears and after the show they entertained us in the lounge bar in their own very special way. We left at 2am and they were still singing and dancing.

The Christmas Island dancers put on a special show at the reunion CBE, DSO, DFC, also came along to talk to veterans and to sign copies of his book. He was asked, before he went home, to give a talk which the four of us missed.

But veterans who did have a chance to talk to him were very impressed and they added that it was nice to talk to a Task Force Commander and not have to stand to attention.

The reason Air Vice-Marshall Oulton could not stay was because his wife Hetty was at home suffering from flu’, which was a shame.

All in all I am sure the people who attended would like to thank Jim Cooper, Chris Christcllo, plus their wives, and not forgetting Pat Hurley who put in such a big effort to make everyone welcome and to make it a suc­ cess.

And to clear up the controversy, I asked Jim Cooper straight out, with no bull-—, did he use the list of veterans names from the Association. Jim said no, he used the names from the first reunion • and then It was by word of mouth. So there you have it from the horses mouth so to speak, but I just wanted to clear up that bit of conflict..

FOOTNOTE: The two ladies we bumped Into were Aurita and her friend from Christmas Island. Aurita lives in Hythc and her friend in Farehain, Hampshire. They were two of the dancers so of course John and I nearly let the cat out of the bag without realising it.

Great shame our Chairman, Ken McGinlcy, wasn’t there. Still the next reunion takes place in two years time.

OES anyone remember the closing days of Maralinga in November 1956?

The Army had long gone and most of the RAF, the Equipment and the Air Movements section were kept busy to the last minute checking and making records of all equipment not used, but being left behind for the next round of tests.

One night I went to the RAF cook­ house, which at that time was a small tin hut in the village, and made some toffee which was given to the lads as they embarked on a Hastings taking them to Edinburgh Field.

It smelt strongly of onions having been stored in pickle jars, but it didn’t affect the taste. Unfortunately the cookhouse boys had a go at making toffee later that night and I had a telling off from CpI. George Alger for their results.

Chairmans report Mk T this time of writing I have still not received any information from Strasburg and as soon as I Mjl do have any communication of the outcome, all the Executive Committee and representatives irmwill be notified immediately.

Thanks to our Researcher Paul Draper, who helps Ken Taylor In London branch, documentation Is now in our possession relating to the April 28th Megaton Bomb on Christmas Island where, especially in the main camp ther­ mal radiation may be expected from all angles due to scatter. Also pot holes for other personnel for prompt induced and fallout radiation. All representatives have this document and it would come In very useful at tri­ bunals.

I am shocked that the Task Force Commander knew this information and has failed the men who he was directly responsible for by not saying this publicly. He has failed in his duty as a Senior officer. It is obvious to many that each time we have our nose in front, the M.O.D. decide to change the goal-posts. The most recent evidence of this is the introduction of a twenty five year limit on contracting Leukemia and Myeloma. This was announced after the second study to falsify the true figure, making both the NRPB studies a complete bogus.

Only two Western powers experimented with their servicemen during their Nuclear Tests programme - Britain and the United States. In the USA, when Ronald Reagan was President, he passed the radiation Exposed Veterans Compensation Act recognising thirteen cancers relating to radiation exposure.

In 1990, President Bush added a further two cancers, cancer of the Salivary Gland and cancer of the Urinary Tract and also extended the initial forty year limitation for claims to open for life. Now that is Democracy. We also have to take into consideration that during the infancy of the Nuclear Age, the same two countries were also carrying out nuclear experiments on civilians under the guise of the Medical Research Council. As you are all aware, around three hundred British servicemen were posted to Christmas Island in 1962 for a series of U.S. tests - twenty eight in all.

There are cases of both Leukemia and Myeloma in this small number and if they had been United States citizens their claim would have been settled, but by an agreement between both countries, each veteran or widow has to claim on their respective Government.

The American government has now apologised for its horrific experiments, but I am afraid the stiff upper lip pre­ vails in this country. As long as there is a veteran alive, a widow grieving, and a child to continue fighting, we shall stand together and fight for the recognition we totally deserve.

A crime has been committed and the guilty should pay. So let’s support each other and get involved with your branch - it requires your support more than ever now. May I wish you all the best for the BNTVA future.

Around the Branches..l) NORTH EAST BRANCH

LONDON BRANCH

ONCE again I have to report a delay in having a Memorial Stone laid in the North East. Apparently Newcastle Council are flooded with calls from different associations wishing to place stones and they have decided to call a meeting with these different Associations on March 16.

I, along with Bill Cambell of the British Legion, have been pressing on all sides regarding the situation, but unfortunately at a time when the above is going on. I am now trying other avenue’s as I have done in the past, Apparently time means nothing in regard to council’s procedures and so once more patience is required.

A widow I am representing in a pension appeal, has com­ plained to her MP regarding the long delay by War Pensions to hear her appeal. In turn the MP has brought in the local Ombudsman to investigate this. Let’s hope this will help all who have waited many years for their appeals to be heard.

Mike Doyle did a survey on replies members received from the NRPB concerning tests attended and exposure records.

The result of this shows once again the flaws in the NRPB study as quite a few records used for the study were innacurate. I would urge all veterans and widows who have not yet written to the NRPB requesting a print out of their records on the Test procedure to do so. Send them to Mike Doyle point­ ing out anything you find wrong. I am sure you will understand this is a matter of grave concern. Please write.

MERSEYSIDE BRANCH

IT has been a hectic time here on Merseyside with the vari­ ous parades to commemorate the end of the Second World War, our own service on October 3 and finally the Remembrance Services. The VJ service was held at Liverpool Football Ground and was a tremendous day with 309 Standards on parade. Our own service was conducted

by Canon Nick Frayling and although the attendance was up this year, it was still poor.

On the news front things are very quiet while we await news from Europe and a report from the Canada conference which I am told should be very interesting.

Will members please note that notice of Branch meetings are not being sent out. This decision was taken by branch members to save funds. Meetings are held at 11am the sec­ ond Sunday in January and the first Sunday in April, July (AGM), and October - all at the RLB, Croxteth. You will note my phone number is not printed in the magazine and this is due to malicious calls being made.

Finally, due to his health, Harry Hoult, our Branch Standard bearer, has finally had to fall out. Many thanks Harry for a job well done. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and wish you all you wish yourselves for the New Year.

I would like to thank the BNTVA members for organising such a great Christmas Island reunion at Weston-Super-Mare. I am already looking forward to the next one in 1997. Also many thanks for the refreshments and hospitality shown towards the veterans after the Remembrance Day Parade in London by Lydia Wilson and staff of the Elephant and Castle public house. A pot plant was presented to Lydia to show our appreciation for her kindness.

This year at the Public Record Office we have seen more departments release files namely the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment (AWRE) and the Medical Research Council. Though we now know the titles of 400 plus AWRE files, most of them remain closed. These relate to nuclear weapons development etc and to the Hurricane and Mosaic tests. We expect more to be available shortly, but expect most of them to remain closed. With the MRC files there is nothing of interest except to say that at least one doctor, dur­ ing the late 1950’s, reported a patient who has suffered as a result of attending the Hurricane test. We expect more infor­ mation to be released in January.

The MRC files did reveal a grant application from one Dr J Rotblat. May we just offer our congratulations to him for win­ ning the Nobel Peace Prize for his work against the atom bomb. And finally can we wish all veterans a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

EAST MIDLANDS BRANCH WE would like to thank Mavis Gardner for the years of devot­ ed work she has put in as the Widows Representative of the BNTVA. She relinquished this post at the end of August this year. She continues to be an active member of the National Executive Committee War Widows Association, but because of health And personal reasons she could not carry on with both tasks. I am sorry to have to report that we have had two active branch members die this year - Roger Hine of Thurnby, Leicester, and Robin Kemp of Market Harborough. If any member wishes to attend an East Midlands branch meeting please contact me as we move meetings around the area each time to make the venues more accessible to the far flung members of the branch. SOUTH CHESHIRE/NORTH STAFFS BRANCH OUR agm meeting was held on October 6 and was well attended. Two new members joined us - Ken Byatt and Joe Walters. All correspondence from the Executive Committee was distributed to members, letters were read out after which a general discussion took place. We held a successful draw which raised £33.50 for branch funds. Laurie Yeo has designed a car sticker in colour and will cost £1.25 including postage (see advert in this issue). (Around the Branches..2) NEW SUSSEX & BORDERS BRANCH IT was most encouraging to see a number of our new Branch mem­ bers attending the "Last Great Parade" held at Chatham during the summer. We were pleased to join our fellow BNTVA friends from other branches (which included Kent, London, Portsmouth, Milton Keynes and the South West) in a spectacular parade and marching tribute to all who had served their country.

As for the new Branch activities, they have unfortunately been some delays due to urgent health problems within my family since the sum­ mer. However, I am now hopeful that our new branch can re-estab­ lish itself with its first business and social gathering in the New Year.

SCOTTISH BRANCH AT long last the Branch had its first get together held on 28th September this year. Although few in numbers (18) we had a grand evening and the chat and the stories brought back memories to all of us.

It is hoped to hold another meeting on 12th April next year in the Stirling area so that members from that part of the country can come along.

In recent weeks both the Evening Times and Scotsman newspapers have had articles regarding us veterans and our cause so we are still in the national news. Also one or two new members have contacted me as a result which is very encouraging.

You might be one of those who receive the standard letter saying"The study of nuclear weapon test participants was based on records for over 20,000 men identified from M.o.D. archives - we do not have records for you on this study, either from M.o.D. or other sources."

It is happening. Anyone who receives this letter or finds a gross inaccuracy in the NRPB record please hammer your MP with it.

Don't forget I need to have a copy even if it is all correct and espe­ cially if it isn’t, every 100% of you.

CANADIAN BRANCH LIKE many other concerned veterans and members of the Canadian Government, I have protested at the testing of nuclear devices in the Pacific by the French. Letters have come to me from Andre Quellett, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Lawrence MacAulay, Progressive Conservative member of Parliament Secretary of State (veterans), agreeing with my petition. I am satisfied with their stand on this mat­ ter.

MILTON KEYNES BRANCH THE week-end of 27th October, 1995, saw the second re-union of the Christmas Island veterans. The venue was Pontins Holiday Camp at Weston-Super-Mare where the food and entertainment was in ample supply. There were some 250 veterans and their wives present of which twenty six men met up again for the first time since leaving the island. The highlight of the entertainment was the group of Kiribati dancers who performed for us (at their own expense) and brought back many emotional memories. A collection was made for the Island's hospital and, along with the sale of maps, this raised £451.53p. I would personally like to thank everyone who came along, also Chris and Jim and especially the dancers for making it such a memorable weekend. Plans are now going ahead for the next reunion at the same venue in two years time. Please note that branch meetings are held the first Sunday in December, March, June and September at the Royal British Legion, Newport Pagnell.

NORTH WALES BRANCH MAY I wish all Veterans and Widows a Happy Christmas, in particular to those in Wales. I do hope that the New Year keeps us united as it is always a disappointment to see another year of misunderstand­ ings. I realise we are all fighting for compensation and pensions, but we must work together in harmony. I strongly believe the time has come to plan to hand over the reins to the next generation, not talk of closing down. Lastly, we should all be proud of what has been achieved.

HUMBERSIDE BRANCH I WOULD like to start my report by saying a very big thank you to all the veterans and their wives who travelled to Hull for the Branch Standard dedication service on 23rd July and to the Standard Bearers who did a splendid job on our behalf. I would also like to say a special thank you to our Association Chaplain, the Reverend Nicholas Frayling, the service he conducted was absolutely brilliant. I have had many people saying to me how much more they under­ stand our Association after listening to him.

Our branch standard has been on parade on several occasions and as I wrote we were due to display the Standard at a Remembrance Service Cleethorpes Town Hall. Cleethorpes Borough Council helped us with finances for our Standard and Hull City Council did us proud by laying on a splendid buffet and reception at the Guildhall.

I get quite upset at times by the poor record of some of our mem­ bers, i.e. not attending meetings, not getting involved, not answering correspondence. I do not think it is enough just to pay your subs and leave it all to someone else. As a branch rep I put an awful lot of time in preparing for meetings to make sure members are kept up to date so I do not think it unreasonable to expect some support from mem­ bers in return (come on rally round). Best wishes to everyone for Xmas and New Year.

PAT’S PROMISE TO HER I LATE HUSBAND T was a very powerful inner voice lhat start­ ed my adventure to Lethbridge for the First Annual Nuclear Test veterans and Survivors of Atomic Bombs conference (wow, what a title).

During our marriage, my husband Michael would say to me, in response to some political or personal injustice: “Write a letter honey!" and it was that same message from him that made me respond when planning the Lethbridge odyssey, I had little real knowledge of the subject mat­ ter, except for stories Michael had told me, most of which were anecdotal and for the purpose of entertainment.

Thai was of course, before he got sick. Noone was more surprised than we were then. He was a police officer and in very good physical condition; it was a boll from the blue believe mc.

He loved his lime on Chrisunas Island, the incredible white sand and blue lagoon, so defer­ ent from Leicester where he grew up; he loved the sport in off hours, he was passionate about football and, while he was there, he broke his nose in a scrum and very proud of it he was loo.

Me enjoyed the companionship of men. He was only 23 years old when he was sent there and like the rest of them, full of P&V and absolutely invincible.

So, when I was sent the literature on the Lethb ridge conference I felt that I had to attend for Michael’s sake although Lethbridge is a long way from where I live and the expense of attending was more than I should have spent. I felt I had to attend.

I didn’t know any of the other participants, but as luck would have it after settling in at the hotel and going to pick up my conference package, I ran smack into the BNTVA contingent.

After introductions all round, I was taken under their collective wing and was made to feel the comradeship lhat servicemen and members of fra­ ternities have in common.

Many thanks to Ken McGinlcy, Peter Fletcher, Sid Hardwick, Dave Riley, Terry Mercer, george Armstrong and Richard Smith.

The delegates of the BNTVA were the most knowledgeable and forthcoming with information at the conference, but in my view the schedule of papers to be delivered was very heavily weighted on the side of science and statistics; there was very little personal information, no personality or soul.

For me the focus missed the profound message men arc losing their health and their lives. Maybe because Michael’s death was so fresh, I felt over­ whelmed by this cold scientific and statistical information, I, like many of you, arc affected by nuclear radi­ ation in a very different way. My husband, my friend and life companion, has been taken away from me. I’m very angry about that. I’m more angry' about the fact lhat the people in whom he gave his allegiance and co-operation have let us down.

The generation to come have been short-

changed, perhaps genetically compromised and nobody will take responsibility for the terrible, dirty deed. How very cowardly.

In the modem world of mass communication, we arc confronted by condensed journalism; sound bites and video clips. A slap-dash of quick updates. But we need to raise the passion of the population by education, I attended mass on my arrival in Lethbridge and although the city is not very big, and the confer­ ence was sponsored by the Chaplain of the University, the priest who conducted the service I attended didn’t have any information about the cause at all.

“And just what is a nuclear lest vet?" he asked me in what I took as a cynical query.

It appears that unless you arc an environmental­ ist, statistician, pollster, medical doctor or perhaps been one of the select few who had bombs dropped over their heads personally, the cause is not even recognised by the general public.

How can those of us affected take a pro-active pari in making sense out of a senseless situation and get some help?

We need to finds a platform that has not yet been used from which to plead our ease and I have a vow to myself and to Michael to work towards that goal. It has become very personal.

Fair turnout again for Parade WE had a fair turn out for the London Cenotaph Parade:- 56 members from Yorkshire, Lancashire, Southern Ireland, Merseyside, Midlands, Portsmouth, Milton Keynes, London, Home Counties and Somerset.

I still had 44 tickets spare! Can we not endeavour to have a magical 100 or more attending this wonderful and touching service next year?

Once again my grateful thanks to Ken Taylor who supplied wheelchairs for those who needed them and 'drove me’ throughout the parade, on to the Elephant and Castle for 'butties and pint’ and all this organised by Don (Taff) James. Many, many thanks Don. Sid Hardwick from Portsmouth brought up one of our plaques and Don was vol­ unteered to present this to mine host Lydia Wilson with a big kiss from us all.

The plaque will no doubt now be on dis­ play behind the bar.

Many thanks also to Christine James, Don’s wife, who went out of her way to drive us up to our station when time was up. What friendship! What comrade­ ship! Many thanks to all. I feel, howev-

er, I must make mention of ‘complaints’ I received concerning BBC Television coverage.

Some members and their families take offence if BNTVA does not get a men­ tion or are not pictured on television. It is a nice (and warm feeling) when we are mentioned or are shown.

Every year 1 receive a call from the BBC asking to give brief details of our association in the event that, if the occa­ sion arises, we can be mentioned.

Don't forget there are hundred’s, yes hundred's, of different associations tak­ ing part To mention all, to film all would be impossible between 10.30am 12noon.

Remember, we are there to remember the fallen of All. wars and conflicts.

We got to remember, to pray, to thank God some of us are still here.

It is a nice and great honour to be mentioned and filmed. But that is not what we are there for. Please friends, don't write or phone the BBC to com­ plain. Need I say more?

Sheila and Ken both honoured at Baltic Forum only two cancers as our Government would have us believe. In Belarus and Ukraine in particular there is a ten-fold increase in thyroid cancers And anaemia; the deformities in chil­ dren have increased by up to 21%; and they are just two examples I have given you out of many - what say our Government’s statistics now!

Ken and I were also chosen, out of all the delegates present, to speak for the next three days at the Academy of Medicine, the Academy of Science and the Gdansk Polytechnic. It was a hec­ tic six day schedule, but very worthwhile - we now know' of them but, more important perhaps, TIIEY KNOW OF US. A final honour was bestowed on us. Again, out of all the countries represented, only Ken and myself were made Honorary members of the Baltic Forum - more prestige and recognition for our Association.

THE Chairman and I attended the IX International Baltic Ecological Forum at Dolowa in Poland on 2022 October this year and I am pleased to say it was a very infor­ mative and worthwhile experience.

Many countries took part including Japan, Russia, Denmark, Sweden and Latvia to name just a few.

I can also tell you now, the infor­ mation given to us was most useful and now w»e know of many more people suffering the same illnesses and genetic damage as ourselves.

We were also fortunate to be in a position to give them the informa­ tion they badly needed to help them prove their damage was radiation based. I firmly believe it is just as important to give information as to receive it because, unless we share our knowledge of common interest, each little corner of our globe, on its own, hasn’t the strength to fight the ‘Nuclear Barons”.

The information now coming for­ ward after the Chernobyl accident is proving positively that radiation is a KILLER and doesn’t slop at

ET another year, 1995, comes to a close. It has been, as usual, another year of frustration, rumours, some pension appeal successes, even more pension appeal rejections and our widows membership increased. On that sad note we send our deepest sympathy to the families of those who have been taken.

It amazes me that week in week out, we hear from veterans who say they did not know of the existence of the BNTVA and now wish to join us. The Christmas Island re-union at Weston-Super-Mare proved this point with Ken Taylor finding some 20 new members.

I have received numerous letters and telephone calls to say what a wonderful week-end it proved to be, most of which sing the praises of Pat Hurley, Ken Taylor and Ron Bostwick with added praise for Chris Christello, Jim Cooper and Mrs Bobbie Brewster for their hard work in organising the event. Everyone I have spoken to or written to stress how much they look forward to the 1997 get together. It will be a busy year for our Christmas Island members. Do not forget the visit to Christmas Island is also on the agenda for that year.

Our Chaplain, Canon Nicholas Frayling, has been approached to join the party and to conduct a special prayer service.

Albeit I am a Monte Bello 1952 veteran and, if God spares me, I too will endeavour to go as I am sure will many others of the Australian Test Veterans. When all is said and done, we are, after all, each and every one of us, victims of nuclear test­ ing be it Australia, Malden or Christmas Islands. Roger Filby of Reading wrote to Richard Branson, Chairman of the Virgin Group of Companies, re the proposed pilgrimage. Richard said he would love to be able to help, but he did not think they flew near Christmas Island. But he suggested that if we heard they had started flights to fly closer by 1997, they do not hesi­ tate to contact him. Still on the subject of Malden and Christmas Islands, I still await to see or hear from John Leauchars concerning the post­ ing of coconuts and photographs of names carved into trees on the island. I understand John has now returned home from his last visit, but is not too good in health and is recuperating in his native Scotland. More news as I receive it.

RE 1X INTERNATIONAL BALTIC ECOLOGICAL FORUM. POLAND. OCTOBER 1995.

Many, many thanks to all who sent sums of money ranging from £5 to £50 to cover the cost of sending our delegation. The full total from the UK was £505.OOp. Add to this the $235 Canadian dollars sent by Mrs Pat Raynham which converted to £147.00 and the full total was £652.00. Again, many many thanks.

It was decided by committee that it would be too costly to send two delegates from the BNTVA, so our Chairman attended and I remained at home. However, our Secretary Mrs Sheila Gray also received an invitation to attend and this she did pay­ ing her own expenses entirely. I have submitted the report within these pages. Following the Forum, on returning home and getting their breath back, Sheila received three invitations to speak in Sweden, Krakow (Poland), and Denmark. She now awaits further information on these conferences.

EUROPE: Our cases before the Court of Human Rights, Strasbourg. We still await news, but are confident we will learn something before Christmas. Alas, this will be too late for reporting in the magazine.

PARLIAMENT - HOUSE OF LORDS: Questions continue to be asked in both Houses by MP’s and Lord’s, especially by Lord Gordon Parry of Nayland and Mr Gordon McMasters, MP. There is no report from West Yorkshire as we have not yet finalised a new representative, but it is on the cards we will have one in the very near future. ^^UR treasurer, Bill Kittsen, and his wife Annette were involved in a road accident. Both were hurt, but have now recov^^ered. However, Bill was taken down with a heart attack, but has recovered well. Despite these setbacks, he still carries on with his work as treasurer doing his weekly/monthly banking and returns as well as keeping all representatives informed of all developments etc, as they come through.

■I J|IKE Reid, North East representative, has met with setback after setback as regards a site for our North East memorial IVI Stone. The Stone, donated by the North East Co-Operative Funeral Service, is ready and I thank them sincerely for their patience. The Stone will now be laid in the Spring of 1996. Our stone in Risca, South Wales, is to be re-located and mem­ bers there will be notified as soon as arrangements are complete. rj LEASE, dear friends, where we have stones and hold annual service, try to attend. In all cases it appears it is the same ■ few people who attend time after time. Both we and the church dignitaries put in a lot of work to organise these services only for them to be very poorly attended.

OTH Ken McGinley and myself continue to liaise somewhat with the NRPB, obviously a great deal less than when the study was ongoing. Some at the NRPB want the study to continue until 1998 as was originally planned by all the parties concerned. The M.O.D. and the I.C.R.F. say no and their findings to date are final. They say they have conducted a health survey of all the Test veterans. This is totally false. A health study should be on the living, not a study on those we have lost. I have said this many, many times over the years. The truth will one day come out. As things go, too late for most of us, too late for the people who know the whole truth, but deny it to answer for their sins. But the truth will emerge and we must teach our children and grand-children to continue the fight when we have gone. Meanwhile do not weaken. I can assure you that as long as there is breath in the bodies of Ken McGinley, myself and a few others, we will fight for you.
