A MESSAGE OF HOPE CHRISTMAS is a time of new beginnings - a new baby, a new kind of faith, and a new hope for the world.

Within a few short years, that hope seemed to be dashed on a cross, on a lonely hill.

One of the great wonders of the world - some would say the greatest - is the story of how that despair turned to renewed hope, how the gloom of Good Friday gave place to the new life of Easter.

We should never speak lightly of hope. It belongs with faith and love as one of God's greatest gifts.

The BNTVA has had many discouragements down the years, but we must all continue to hope and to pray that right will prevail and Justice will be done.

May God grant to each and every one of you a happy and a hope-filled Christmas.

Forty years on we still remember our dead and buried REMEMBRANCE SERVICE ON ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST TEST ON OCTOBER 3,1952 FOLLOWING weeks of planning by Chris Rowlands, our Chaplain Canon Nicholas Frayling, and myself, we held a service of "Remembrance and Hope" in Liverpool Parish Church on October 3,1992 - 40 years on.

Prior to the service at 2pm. we held a small wreath laying ceremony at our Memorial Stone in St Johns Gardens.

Mrs Muriel McCormack, whose late husband served on that first test on Monte Bello Islands Operation Hurricane", laid a wreath on behalf of our widows Chris Rowlands laid one for B.N.T.V.A. 1992. I laid one on behalf of Australian.

New Zealand. Canadian and Fijian veterans. Chris's nieces, seven year old Emma and four year old Samantha Rowlands laid flowers for our children. They also laid flowers at the El Alamein Memorial Plaque marking the 50th anniversary of that battle. Many personal floral tributes were also placed at our stone.

The main sen'ice was well attended with our members having travelled from as faraway as Scotland. Yorkshire. Birmingham. London, the Home Counties.

Sussex. Somerset and Cornwall.

Also present were Mr Peter Kilfoyle. MP: the Deputy Lord Mayor of Liverpool: the Mayor and Mayoress of St Helens; and the Mayor and Mayoress of Knowsley.

I feel I must also mention my old troop commander Major Peter Sherburn. RE (retired) and his wife Hazel, who travelled down from York to attend despite their ill health. Major Sherburn (then a Captain R.E.) was the first Army officer to return to the island to recover materials within an hour or so of the detonation on the orders of the late Lord William Penny (then just Dr Bill Penny).

Young Helen Cummins attended with her mum to remember her dad and as the service ended she left in tears and returned to me later at the reception with a piece of paper on which she had just penned the following: "In the church it is Bright Clean Holy Beautiful Like the inside of the bomb.

Outside it is Wet Dull Gloomy Cold Like the time after....

In the place where we meet it is Dark Smoky Crowded Laughter and memories Careful knowing ABOVE: Emma and Samantha Rowlands Where is my Daddy now? with their flowers at the church Helen had written this in her sorrow covering the church, the service, the climate and the weather when we left the church. The meeting of us all in Ma Boyles Oyster Bar to drink, smoke, eat and reminisce.

Chris, Nicholas and I felt so proud of all who attended and your very presence made us feel all our efforts of preparation were well worthwhile. BBu North Television interviewed me at home and covered the service and the programme was shown on the following Monday evening and screened in many parts of the country.

On the same day, in another part of the country, John Wheeler of RISCA.

Gwent, South Wales, an ex-matelot and Monte Bello 1952 veteran, organised a remembrance service at the Cenotaph in Risca despite his own serious illness.

It was attended by our own Welsh members, local dignitaries and members of the Royal British Legion.

John is terminally ill with stomach cancer, but still went ahead to remember his old mates and all nuclear veterans. This event was covered by Welsh t television and also Welsh radio and John gave a wonderful interview on radio.

He was then given a cheque for £23 in payment and immediately handed it back to the producer asking him to rewrite the cheque and make itpayable to the B.N.T.V.A. 1992. We salute you John on all counts.

FOOTNOTE: In the years past we have requested respectfully to Her Majesty The Queen and the Government to make October 3"Nuclear Veterans Day".

To date there has been no response.

At this date I prepare a letter to leaders of our churches of all denominations requesting that October 3, 1993, which falls on a Sunday, be a day when special services and prayers are offered to God for nuclear test victims worldwide. I will need the help of all of you in 1993 to make this possible by getting you to visit your local vicars, priests, bishop, clergymen and request that Sunday for prayers and for you all to attend those sen/ices and encourage your family and friends to accompany you. Meanwhile I pray that God will spare John Wheeler, myself and all our sick to see some form of justice and recognition before he takes us.

Merseyside

London DUE to personal committments and the lottery, we have not had branch meetings for sometime. However, at the time of wnting. I have two meetings arranged before Christmas, one at the Royal Engineers Museum. Chatham. Kent, and one at the Royal British Legion. Marlow. Bucks.

It was with sadness my wife Pam and I attended the funeral of our ex-treasurer Frank Gray on behalf of ourselves and the London branch. A few weeks later our Vice-Chairman Peter Fletcher. Chatham representative Paul Rowles. John Halsey and myself, attended the funeral of local branch member. Mick Clarke. Also present were Mick's old Christmas Island mate Tom Lyons and his wife, who tavelled down from Hull. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the families of these men.

Our branch was fairly well represented at this year's Cenotaph Parade on Sunday 8th November with some 14 of a 36 strong party.

ON Saturday the 3rd October, 1992, it was the 40th Anniversary of the detonation of Great Britain's first nuclear device and a Service of Remembrance was held in Liverpool Pansh Church The day started off with a wreath laying service at the BNTVA Memorial in St John's Gardens. Although the weather was very bad it was pleasing to see a good turnout including many Veteran’s from other Associations. Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Associations Widows. people of the Marshall Islands and Western Australia, and not least the Children.

The Service at the church in the afternoon was conducted by our very good friend and now chaplain. Canon Nicholas Frayling. Once again he did us proud with an excellent service and sermon.

Prior to the day Peter Fletcher, myself and Canon Frayling had meetings to set the scene for this occasion. However as usual it was all organised by the Canon even down to where the reception should be held. All Peter and I needed to do was a little fine tuning with regards to the Piper. Catering etc. I often wonder what we would do without Canon Frayling.

In these days of tight purses, it was a delight that so many Veterans and families had made the journey to Liverpool and I know we were all pleased to see so many of our dear widows present.

All the North West MP's were invited and one. Mr Peter Kilfoyle. turned up. along with the Deputy Lord Mayor of Liverpool, the Mayor and Mayoress of Knowsley and the Mayor and Mayoress of St Helens.

The sen/ice was followed by a reception at a somewhat crowded Ma Boyles, but I am sure everyone was pleased with the buffet and a chance to chat with long, lost comrades.

WE had a very good meeting at the "Grange Hotel. Rhyl, on October 26th, 1992. We invited wives and children along to make the meeting more informal and had a guest speaker from the War Pensioners Welfare Service in Wrexham talking about pensions and how to claim. She then met veterans on their own afterwards Veterans are very pleased with the newsletter. I have sent out further up-dated information twice this year.

It has been decided we will hold meetings every three months on an informal basis and we hold them at the Grange Hotel because Brian Roberts sorts it out at no costs to us at all. I will be sending out information as and when it is felt needed.

All subscriptions and donations are sent to the treasurer and are due by January 1.

May I thank all Veterans and wives who keep in touch with me for whatever reason and may I thank those who turn up at our meetngs.

Peter Bullen North East England THE study earned out in the North East area should have been released by the time you read this. All council’s who donated towards it have been sent a copy which gives a good insight into what our campaign is about, even to someone who previously did not know the facts.

All 36 North East MP's will receive a copy and a meeting set up with them via Bill Ethenngton. my local MP. Each one will be asked to stand up in Parliament and ask a question regarding the BNTVA The PLP Committee will also be asked to generate the maximum publicity to open up wounds we have previously put there May I send Seasonal Greetings to everyone from myself, wife Sylvia and family.

Portsmouth THE Portsmouth branch have had a bench made and intend to present it to the Provost of Portsmouth Cathedral. The bench will have a plaque on it with the words Presented by the British Nuclear Test Veterans Association 1992.

This bench is a two seater made of the finest mahogany and was built by one of our veterans. Len Gladis. Len is an ex-ships carpenter and it is a pastime he enjoys.

MP, who spoke of John's public life as a councillor himself for many years. He also read out two letters - one from Prime Minister John Major and the other from Neil Kinnock. the former Leader of the Opposition, expressing their regret at being unable to attend Albert 'Nobby' Clarke paraded the Association's Standard and I had the privilege to read the last verse of Rupert Brooks poem. The Soldier'. as an act of homage to John from us all The branch meetings are held the first Sunday of the month at the Royal British Legion Club. Oadby. Leicester (19.30hrs). All are welcome

In this unstable v/orld we live in full of 'letdowns', unfairness, injustice, sickness and wars, one person we can always rely on is the Lord Jesus, who never changes, is always there, the same yesterday, today and forever. South Wales ON October 3,1992. some hundred veterans and members of the Association assembled at The Cenotaph at Risca to mark the 40th Anniversary of the Atomic Bomb. It was reported in the local press that the day. organised by the veterans, was an event to take pride in with veterans families, including their widows, represented on this occason.

It has been observed from the increased publicity that BNTVA 1992 is going from strength to strength with more veterans of the bomb testing joining and inceased public awareness ensuring the attention of authority.. The event was organised by Navy veteran John Wheeler, a victim of the testing on Monte Bello Islands. John, a cancer victim, said this event was one of his last wishes and would do it again next year showing the same optimism characteristic of veterans of the BNTVA 1992.

Chairman's Report AS everyone is aware, the second stage of the N.R.P.B. report is due to be released in January, 1993. We have been awaiting with great patience the outcome of this report which has taken the best part of ten years.

In a recent BBC World Service Programme, Dr Sarah Darby, PhD, Staff scientist with I.C.R.F., stated that in the participants group of 22,000 men who took part in the tests, they expected to find nineteen and a half Leukemias. They found 22 deaths of the disease.

In the control group of the same size they found six cases only. Multiple Myeloma in the participants group was six cases and none in the control group. Surely if a figure is expected in one group it is also expected in the other group. It makes sense.

J August 12 is, as many people know (especially the titled one's), "The Glorious Twelfth". Sadly it was a Black Day for the Association because that was the day we lost Frank Gray, one of the staunchest members of the Veterans and a very close friend of myself and my family. I admired his honesty, courage and his dry sense of humour. We will all miss you Frank.

JWe are giving Mr John Hosken an Honorary membership of our Association as a way of saying thanks for being instrumental in one of the most informative radio interviews 1 have had the pleasure of being involved in on October 14.

It went out, on BBC World Service to mark the 40th Anniversary of Britain's entry into the Nuclear Age and covered interviews with our Australian counterparts, Lord Ashley of Stoke and Winston Chu rchill MP. It was a pleasure doing "The Despatches Programme, The Truth About Christmas Island". It was produced 'Xy Paul Murricane, directed by Mr Ross Wilson, both from Scottish Television, and was nominated for a BAFTA award getting on the short list of three.

J When l became a local councillor last May, it was difficult to arrange meetings etc as my work is very time consuming and really demanding. But after the N.A.P.B. Study maybe things can return to normal for everyone because by that time we sincerely hope that the Government will concede to the Veterans by admitting a "wrong was done and they will undo it".

I would ike to finish by asking all members to stand by the Associaton and not to be badly misled by disgruntled egotistic individuals who took offence at not being allowed to get their own selfish way and decided to hold unnofficial meetings under a new banner in a bid to entice members from this, the only truly recognised Nuclear Tests Veterans Association in this country.

Finally, on behalf of my wife Alice, out daughter Louise and myself, I wish you all a Happy Christmas and New Year.

Vice Chairman's Report HOW time flies by! It seems I had no sooner sealed and posted the last of the September issue than it was time to start preparing this one.

The work is non stop, but we have received our reward in the form of lovely letters from lovely people thanking us for remembering them, for helping them keep in touch with things and for helping them. Ken, Chris and I receive these letters from both home and overseas.

Your magazine is produced thanks to Mr Peter Wylde, Peter Faulkner and our own Ken Taylor working on the lottery. They even supply me with the envelopes.

Without the lottery there would be no magazine because subscriptions received would nowhere near cover the cost involved - paper, envelopes, printing, postage etc.

Still on the subject of the magazine, I would like to publish my gratitude to Chris Rowlands who helps me compile it and to the people who help Chris and I address some 2000 envelopes, namely Eddie Johnson (Liverpool), Chris Gallagher (Skelmersdale), Terry Mercer (St Helens) and my daughter Pauline. My love and thanks to my wife Hilda who (under duress I might add) puts up with my covering almost every room in the house with papers, letters, envelopes etc.

It is with some regret that I have to tell you Chris Rowlands has resigned as liaison officer and Executive Committee for various reasons. The main one is he has been called upon to form and look after the R.A.O.C. Association covering the whole of Merseyside. He will however continue to be our Merseyside representative which, as Chris puts it, is "his baby".

Chris, I speak for us all when I say I wish you well in your new post and I know you will still have B.N.T.V.A. close to your heart and your work.

Ken McGinley and Mrs Sheila Gray attended (on invitation) the second Global Radiation Victims conference in Berlin from September 20-25.

A report of this will be will be included in this issue if space permits, but if not it will be used in the Easter issue.

Just prior to the conference Ken received a cheque for £500 from a kindly stranger who was impressed with Ken after reading his book "No Risk Involved". Ken immediately put the money into the Association account towards the cost of the Berlin visit.

Sheila, as you know, was still in deep mourning at the loss of Frank. We asked her to accompany Ken to try to occupy herself and because of her service as our National Secretary for some seven years she knows the subject and can speak on various matters, Frank passed away suddenly while sitting in his wheelchair when out shopping with Sheila. His funeral was attended by veterans from all over the country and the bearers were veterans Ken McGinley (Scotland), Sid Hardwick (Portsmouth), Ken Gower (Leighton Buzzard), Chris Rowlands (Liverpool), Syd Harris (Blackpool) and Peter Fletcher (St Helens).

Frank Cook, MP, spoke in church of Frank's life and dedication to his country and to the B.N.T.V.A. and it goes without saying Frank will be missed as are all the loves one's we lose.

PENSIONS: Pensions are being awarded on first asking and appeal. If you are refused a pension (Disability or War Widow) DO NOT GIVE UP. DO NOT DESPAIR, Appeal, appeal and appeal again. Just this last two weeks we have received letters from veterans and widows who have been awarded pensions of first asking and on appeal.

Mrs L of South Wales writes to tell me she applied for a pension last year when we took some 1000 claims to Norcross. She was refused. Out of the blue in September this year she received a letter to say new medical evidence had come to light and she was to receive a war widows pensions. Mrs L enclosed a £50 cheque for the Association to help us fight for other widows.

In my own case of appeal, it was due to be heard on September 10, but on September 3 I received a word it was postponed due to new medical evidence coming to light which had to be studied. I now await a new date.

My illness - polycythaemia and chronic obstructions airways disease.

Mr P (Tyne and Wear) - pension awarded for partial loss of hearing.

Mr B (Poole) pension awarded Basal Cell Carcinoma.

Mr C (Oldham) - pension awarded (lump sum) for skin cancer.

Mr J (Doncaster) - pension awarded (lump sum) for stress.

Mr C (Exeter) - pension awarded for stress.

There are many, many more so the DSS are listening so why not the MOD. Another letter we received from Mrs E (East Sussex) who had been helping her sister-in-law to obtain a war widows pension. Her claim was rejected so her sister said she could not continue to fight. I have replied to say Do Not Give Up. Appeal - you must fight on. We must all fight on.

God is good, he will see to it that justice and truth prevail despite the evil conivings of the faceless one's within the battlements of the MOD. Many of them I am sure were running around in short pants whilst we were out on those tests. What do they know? Why is it certain papers/documents

concerning our tests are to remain hidden for 40,50 or 60 years thus bypassing the 30 year Official Secrets Act ? What are they hiding?

One has heard or read of atrocities in wars and conflicts. Was it not an atrocity to put us on the line to prepare, witness and clean up after the tests only to be tossed aside and forgotten? NO FOLLOW UPOF OUR HEALTH. NO FOLLOW UP OF OUR OFFSPRING. Or another way of looking at it:- One hears of deaths and maiming as a result of 'friendly fire', Did they know in the 1950's and 1960's of radiation and it's effects? Are our illnesses and often slow and painful deaths, a result of "friendly fire"???. Whichever, whatever, justice must be done, "All We Seek Is Justice".

The current NRPB study on veterans is, we are told, complete and the findings will be made public sometime in January. Could all this 'new medical evidence"coming to light stem from the study? I have heard a whisper that some "delicate talks" have been going on in Whitehall and Westminster. I have heard the findings will "raise a few eyebrows". I have heard they will "give plenty to talk about". We shall see.

Whatever happens, do not give in or despair. We must fight on. We, the veterans, our families and our widows know what happened. We know the pain and anguish we have and are suffering. We must ensure "they too know of it".

Your next magazine, God willing, will be issued for Easter, in time to remind you again of our AGM at Blackpool on the 24th April, 1993.

NOTICE BOARD... 1 JOHN Leuchars, ex-squaddie U Christmas Island 1956-57 a Scot now living in Bury, Lancashire, says he is in constant touch with Christmas Islanders.

Last year he put out an appeal in his local paper for people to give him their unwanted spectacles to send to the needy natives of Christmas Island.

He was rewarded with an astonishing 1000 pairs which he sent to the islands with the help of Canadian Airlines, who transported them free of charge to the islands via Honolulu.

In return John received a letter of gratitude from the Ministry on behalf of the people of Christmas Island in the Republic of Kiribati. He was also regarded by being put in touch with an old friend, Moantau. one of the natives who worked with John in 1956-57.

All this was in 1990-91 and John is now in constant touch receiving domestic news of what is happening there.

Only a short time ago a parcel arrived at John's home containing t-shirts sporting a map of Christmas Island also Lava-Lavas and cushion covers embroidered with his and his wife's name - all the work done by the natives themselves.

He is to receive more which he suggests we raffle off for our funds.

However that is in the future and John promises us a story for future issues of our magazine.

QON Summers says he would like llto thank his old Christmas Island mate Ken Leyland, who lives in Canada, for organising a memorable Reunion down in Boscombe and Poole in September.

After 34 years, meeting up again with old mates such as Ken, Brian, Cork and Peter Pointer, and not forgetting our good wives, who made it a week-end not to forget. It won't stop there.

pvAVE Ireland, living in Scarborough, l-J recently attended the Service of Remembrance and Hope in Liverpool on October 3 and met up with old friend Andy Anderson from Runcorn.

rjROM James Greer in Penwortham, I Preston, comes the story, from 1962, of how he was posted to Christmas Island from RAF Henlow.

He was then detached to Main Camp on C.l. where he took up duties as a cook in the Mess feeding VIP's. There were thirteen cooks and stewards serving with the Americans.

Some went home, but James was posted to Port Camp on C.l. where he stayed for the remaining six months.

All the cooking was done in the mess and food was then put on trollies to be taken up to the Sergeant's Mess where he could serve the meals.

Now James wants to find any ex­ members of the RAF who served on Christmas Island during this period.

NOTICE BOARD...2 ^AN you help solve a mystery? wThat's the request from Mrs S Moulton to Peter Fletcher who says her late husband was in the Royal Navy and served on a test. She is convinced it was Monte Bello as she recalls him talking a lot about M.B. She recalls he said he worked with the "scientists" for a spell.

His navy ships and shore establishments record makes no mention of service in test areas and Mrs Moulton thought one of the men in the photograph in the September issue could have been her husband Raoul. The picture showed Sappers and A.W.R.E. men on Monte Bello 1952. It was not Raoul.

Now she has sent two photographs of her late husband. One of them is opposite and shows him on the mess deck looking into a microscope or camera watched by an unknown man.

The unknown man looks very much like an A.W.R.E. scientist I worked with on M.B. and is in my group photo. The second picture below is that of Raoul relaxing on deck with a cigarette.

Did you serve with Raoul? Do you know his companion? If you are a member do you recognise yourself as his companion.

Peter Fletcher has advised Mrs Moulton on certain action which she has taken, but the case can be closed if someone can definitely recognise Raoul, ship/ship test etc.

Some of the ships he served on between 1952-1960 were HMS Ceylon, Loch Ruthven, Warden, Diligence and Dainty. Contact Peter Fletcher with any news.

Picture that is really food for thought lads!

THERE’S no food on this menu below, but it is a picture that will certainly whet the appetites of many veterans who were on Christmas Island* Because this is the front cover of the Christmas Day menu at the airfield camp in 195®.

It was sent to us by Robert ‘TafF Griffiths of Auckland, New Zealand, and he is interested to find out if anyone recognises their ‘autograph’ on the menu.

It was signed by some of the sappers of 3 Troop, S7 Field Squadron and 36 CEB. Is your name amongst them?

Robert asks if any members of the BNTVA (199*) recognise their names after THIRTY years.

Robert says he read the September issue of the BNTVA magazine with interest because he spent a year on Christmas Island himself from November 1958 to November 1959.

He also tells us he heard Dickie Valentine on the radio singing “How’d you Like to Spend Xmas on Christmas Island” and that brought back a few memories for him.

Today’s students gain from my nuclear past RECENTLY I was invited by Glen Brown, the Head of Drama at Yateley Comprehensive School . to address his V1 th Form Drama Group students.

Glen had become aware of my involvement as a Nuclear Vet­ eran and felt that the students might benefit not only from being made aware of my experiences, but those of others, and the prevarication that has existed by various Government’s since it all happened in 1950.

Through Sheila Gray I was put in contact with Helen Cummins, an 18 year old girl whose father died some two years ago as a result of being on Christmas Island in the Clean Up Team.

Helen, in fact, has just gained a place at Liverpool University to study drama and was of the same age group as the group we were going to address.

The talk was based upon a totally apolitical approach by myself with anecdotal additions. Edited videotapes, provided by Ken Taylor, were shown to the Group and thereafter a lively dis­ cussion took place.

From my point of view I made it clear that no drama took place on the Island other than that of the bombs - the drama is NOW taking place not only with the veterans who served throughout all the Nuclear tests, but with their dependents and grand-chil­ dren.

Helen brought this home with some force to her immediate peer group. The one question that sticks in my mind from this very bright group of students, was that Helen’s and my thoughts were for the people that had placed such bodies of men in such areas where it was obvious that the men were treated as guinea pigs.

My reply was that I resented the indifference that existed with­ in the UK Government to recognise and address the problems

that now exist and continue to grow with my fellow veterans.

Helen replied that she hated them - a strong conviction for someone so young. She also expressed concern at the thought of marriage and the possibility of producing genetically de­ formed children.

The outcome of this talk has been that the V1th Form Drama Group are currently working on producing a play depicting our current dilemma Should the production go ahead then it will be taken to other schools and performed in front of other students.

During the meeting I became painfully aware that the students had little or no knowledge of the origins of nuclear weapons and the methods that were used to develop them, some of the stu­ dents having parents of my age.

I suggest that we have now become the white elephant of his­ tory in a very short time span. We have a duty to inform the coming generations and would suggest that other veterans con­ tact the local Education Authorities with a view to addressing similar interested student groups.

Upon closing I would like to thank Helen Cummins for showing such strength and courage in talking to the students about her recent loss, also the Yateley School for the invitation plus the Association for the support material provided.

Now this is an extract from a letter written home a few days after the Christmas Isand test.

"You at home wil no doubt have learned by now that we exploded a megaton device last week.

It was a terrible experience and many of us were knocked over by the blast Although we had our backs to the bomb we could feel the heat burning into our necks and backs.

Were we at a safe distance away9 This was writen just a few days after the test not years and years later. So the memory and feelings were still fresh.

LETTER FROM IAN

I AM suffering from (as listed): atheroslerosis; diabetes melitus: Forresters disease; obesity; conjuctivitus; recurrent acute bronchitis; blood disorder; pneumonia; acute arthritis; arterial hardening; and I have suffered two strokes this year - a terminal combination I am assured.

The War pensions have rejected my appeal for a pension saying it's not relevant to Christmas Island DDT radiation etc..Wait for it..they are taking responsibility for 6-14% hearing defects though. There we were basking in a radioactive paradise, drenched in domestic DDT, not knowing the thunderous staccato of falling coconuts: the sargeants shouting at us Remember, we all bought white, innovations -

the tiny transistors. Nobody warned us these things can cause impending hearing damage. The bonus is someone in Blackpool admits this. When my wife gets my next prescriptions -18 pills daily, two bottles, two eye drops - if my ears play up my ear treatment is free. I am appealing.

THE failure to pay compensation to nuclear test veterans is a great blot on the national con­ science. It has remained so for far to long and the 40th anniversary will serve to remind the nation and the Government - that their case does not weaken with the passage of time. Nor does the determination of the veterans themselves and their many supporters in and out of Parliament.

We shall continue the battle till victory.

OBITUARY OF FRANK MORGAN DR Frank Morgan.OBE. who died on April 2b. 1985. aged 63. had been for many years one of the leading British scientists involved in the development and control of nuclear weapons.

Throughout Ins long career at the Atomic Weapons Establishment.

Aldermaston. of which he became Deputy Director in 1976. he had an important influence on a wide variety of National Scientific issues in the peaceful as well as military application of nuclear physics.

Frank Morgan was born on November 22, 1921. the son of the manager of an iron mine in lladbarrow. Cumberland.

A strong bent towards science took him to Durham University where he gained his BSc in chemistry in 1942 even though he had no scientific teaching at school.

He was immediately invited by one of his teachers. Frit/ Pancth. to join a project so secret that he had to reply without knowing what it was.

He accepted and found himself a member of the British. FrenchCanadian team working at Chalk River in Ontario on that part of the “Tube Alloys” programme which was concerned with devising techniques for the recovery of plutonium.

The success of this project made possible the Nagasaki bomb. He returned to Durham for post graduate research for which he obtained his doctorate and then rejoined the Nuclear Research Programme at Harwell in 1948.

In 1951 he was persuaded by Lord Penney (then Sir William Penney) to make the unfashionable transfer from the non-military side to Aldermaston. w here he spent the rest of his career until his re­ tirement in 1983.

He was made Superintendent at the Radio Chemistry Branch in 1954 and w'as eventually in charge of all materials and chemistry work at the Establishment. He was given his OBF. in 1969.

Morgan was a key figure in the programme of the British Atomic Tests in Australia and the Pacific between 1952-59 being the main expert on the interpretation of the evidence of dust particles and debris.

He later applied this experience to the detection and analysis of other tests including those of the Soviet Union. And to the task of veterans of the British Tests and refining and improving safety standards in the nuclear industry.

In the I960’s he was an important member of successive British missions to the negotiations which led to the Non Proliferation Treaty of 1970. His crucial contribution was to persuade the other negotiators that the keeping of accurate records of the input and output of fissionable materials by the signatory Government’s was not only an adequate way. but the sole practicable way of providing a working monitoring system.

This last achievement gave him much satisfaction for while he was a firm believer in nuclear deterrence, he had a strong sense of the responsibilities of his profession.

His theoretical knowledge was profound but he was first and fore­ most a practical man who believed with unquenchable enthusiasm that science could help w ith the problems of life from defence to cookery.

This belief enhanced his outstanding virtuosity as a solver of technological problems. It also encouraged his ability to think laterally’ of which an important product was the Forensic Science Laboratory' which he set up at Aldermaston in conjunction with the Home Office.

His house was full of gadgets and inventions of his own making - all of which worked. He will be remembered by his friends and col­ leagues as a man of great originality, honesty and charm.

Tribute to forgotten heroes LIVERPOOL Parish Church (Canon Nicholas Frayling), has long been closely associated with Mariners and the sea.

The Merchant Navy seem to be the forgotten heroes of wars and yet they attended nuclear testing.

Nicholas is making efforts to raise funds for a small chapel dedicated to the gallant members of the Merchant Navy who lost their lives in defence of our country.

It’s a big task, but we are sure he will do it.

Exposure and risk to young A GROWING body of research now suggests that some miscarriages, birth defects and diseases in children can be blamed on substances to which the father has been exposed.

Scientists are intrigued by the possibility that some of these harmful effects could be caused by sperm that has been dam­ aged by exposure to chemicals found in recreational drugs, in the workplace or elsewhere in the environment.

Radiation and some toxic chemicals have been known for decades to reduce th e number of sperm that men produce - and hence their fertility.

But until recently the assumption has been that remaining sperm were probably healthy and that damaged sperm would be unlikely to win the race to fertilise the egg.

"We used to be taught in toxology that if you damage the male he becomes infertile and that’s it," said Ellen Silbergeld, a toxologist at the University of Maryland, Balti­ more.

But it now appears that sperm with even gross changes, such as an extra chromosone, may have the same chance as a healthy sperm of reaching and penetrating the egg.

At the other extreme, subtle changes such as mutation of a single gene may cause miscarriage or have a profound effect on the offspring.

So far the bulk of the evidence that damaged sperm may affect embryos or children, comes from animal studies.

Laboratory researchers have shown, for example, that in mice and rats, paternal exposure to some chemicals can lead to

spontaneous abortions, low birth weight, birth defects and cancer, However, trying to document the biologi­ cal legacies left by men to their sons and daughters as a result of chemical expo­ sure, has proved to be much more difficult.

While numerous studies have linked fathers who work with a number of industri­ al solvents and metals to higher than nor­ mal rates of miscarriage, birth defects and childhood cancers, epidemiologists acknowledge that almost all of these stud­ ies have serious flaws.

The first animal studies to show the effects of radiation exposure on sperm were published more than 40 years ago in the wake of the atomic bombings (explo­ sions) in Japan.

But widespread curiosity about the effects of paternal exposure to a wide range of substances, have grown only in the past few years, One reason for the surge in interest is the new found insight brought about by advances in molecular biology.

“These effects no longer seem implausi­ ble because we’re starting to have the molecular biology to put the effects into context,” says Silbergeld.

Political pressure to investigate paternal effects also grew from the fears of the Vietnam veterans that their offspring may be damaged by the defolient Agent Orange.

On this case the issue against Agent Orange is still open, but public interest in the topic may have spurred more research in the broader field of paternal exposure, Then, in 1990, Martin Gardner, an epidemiologist at the University of Southamp-

ton, reported that he had found a cluster of eight cases of leukemia among the chil­ dren of father’s who worked at Sellafield nuclear plant in West Cumbria.

Gardner’s report has been widely criti­ cised by scientists who point to a much larger body of data from the thousands of survivors of the atomic bombs in Japan.

Ten’s of thousands of the children of those survivors have been followed and they show no predisposition to cancer.

Leukemia clusters are extremely frequent and seem to "occur spontaneously” according to Robert Miller of the US National Cancer Institute in Bethesda. The US Centres for Disease Control studied more than a hundred such clusters and never found a cause he added.

Nevertheless, the Gardner Report served to refocus attention on studies which showed that the offspring of mice exposed to radiation, suffered a raised risk of can­ cer and underscored the need for more and better research in humans.
