Systems-based Integrated Collaborative BNIM’s systems-based approach to design is rooted in a multifaceted understanding of nature and the interdependence of natural systems at all scales.

This integrated approach to design uses a rigorous and scientific examination of design issues to build robust communities with defined cultural identities. By emulating nature’s principles, we are able to integrate the natural and built environments to create more pleasant user experiences.

We uphold that there are many individual considerations that, when layered together, comprise our buildings, campuses and communities. By considering each ‘layer’ of design separately and then, comprehensively, we ensure the final solution is in balance for optimal performance and interconnectivity.

We employ a highly collaborative method of designing, where all voices can be heard, from specialist engineers, designers and constructors to clients and users. From the elemental to the regional scale, BNIM’s design approach is informed by the importance of each scale of design that comprises built and natural systems. The interdependence of these scales is critical to building communities that are vibrant, holistic, livable and sustainable.

Systems-based design occurs at all scales.

Decisions made at the smallest scales can have an enormous impact on the outcome of a project. For example, understanding the biology of the landscape might uncover how microbes can be used to treat waste or to restore ecosystems damaged by contamination. Through a closer look at 8 biological systems and collaboration the with experts in the fields of biology and soil science, we provide comprehensive design solutions at every level.

Each individual element of a design concept should relate to all others so that it reinforces the whole. Small design details and individual components become integral parts of a larger sustainable system by contributing to the design expression, performing practical functions and educating users. Detail elements in the built environment convey a spirit of place and belonging that allows users to emotionally connect and engage in fully experiencing built environments.

Building upon the elemental scales, a site concept emerges to build larger systems and define the personal experience of each user and visitor. This level of design — with its visible and experiential nature — builds cohesiveness by connecting the smaller scales and larger contexts. Understanding the social and psychological impacts that design can impart is fundamental at this scale of design.

Intuitive investigation of potential design concepts is an important aspect to achieving a heightened experience.

The quality of the public realm is the most influential force for people when determining where they would like to live, work and visit.

At the urban scale, individual and even isolated projects form the public realm. This interaction forms networks of neighborhoods, produces sensorial experiences and reveals typologies. We consider underlying infrastructure networks, such as transportation, and their historical impacts when evaluating the entire equation for new (and traditional) solutions that can regenerate the built environment and shape the landscape into one that is livable and vibrant.

Regional networks — connections of vast systems and urban areas — unify the scales of design and introduce larger natural, constructed and political systems.

The influences of both watersheds and political boundaries have a tremendous impact. Designing at this scale requires a comprehensive understanding of large landscape systems, regional vernacular, political relationships and the components of each subordinating scale that comprise this whole.

Applebee’s Restaurant Support Center The Applebee’s Restaurant Support Center is an inspiring workplace that maximizes associate satisfaction. The site goals included providing a campus that requires minimal to no chemicals (herbicides and pesticides), deals with storm water on-site, cleans on-site and off-site storm water and maximizes opportunities to recharge the aquifer. Landscape rock, plant material and pavement are manufactured and/or mined from local sources, reducing pollution associated with shipping. A series of vegetated swales in the parking lots, sediment basin, sand filters, and wetland clean the majority of pavement runoff, allowing oils, salts and sediments to be cleansed with on site natural systems.

The design integrates the indoor environment with three exterior courtyards that each possess a unique character. The landscape design maximizes productivity, minimizes operating expenses (electricity and water) and cost effectively supports the business with its minimal maintenance requirements. The site was developed in ways that minimize environmental impact. 95% of site runoff is filtered through best management practices prior to collection in adjacent lakes. Each courtyard includes stormwater treatment of roof runoff. 83% of the roof runoff is filtered through rock filter strips and raingardens. Control of the irrigation system is connected to weather data, allowing irrigation to occur only when needed.

internal revenue service kansas city campus The Internal Revenue Services Kansas City Campus brings 8,000 IRS employees into Downtown Kansas City adjacent to Union Station.

The 1.14 million square foot building provides a sense of place for IRS employees by focusing on strong connections between interior and exterior spaces. The project obtained a LEED Certified rating despite the large square footage requirements by utilizing site design, landscaping, and building strategies to create the most efficient design possible. The landscape design effectively balances issues of security, sustainability and urban design by utilizing element such as Interior courtyards, green roofs, walking trails and by maintaining views to the outdoors.

The plant palette for the project is made up of 80% native species and will reduce the water use by 93% from traditional practices.

The 30,000 SF cafeteria courtyard has become an outdoor environment full of native grasses and plants, which is used regularly by employees of the building. The courtyard includes an 8,000 SF reflecting pool which collects water from the 70,000 SF warehouse roof. The pool is designed to hold 188,000 gallons of runoff. The captured water is recirculated through a series of runnels adjacent to outdoor seating areas. In addition, the top twelve inches of water (or 60,000 gallons) is available for irrigation throughout the courtyard. This is approximately six weeks of irrigation water for the courtyard during drought conditions.

This campus has experienced significant cost savings compared to the traditional manicured campus, especially when you consider the traditional landscape establishment costs, reduced ongoing irrigation costs and typical chemical requirements. The staff continues to enjoy the outdoor environments throughout the year—the walking path, seating areas and reflecting pool.

BNIM’s Landscape Architecture design experience ranges from playground and zoological park master planning to fountain and wayfinding signage design. We practice environmentally aware planning through stream bank restoration and stormwater management techniques and through our considerations for site selection and planning.

Landscape Architecture is an integrated function of the design process at BNIM. It overlaps with other design services. It brings with it a depth of expertise that maximizes the relationship between indoor and outdoor environments at every level of the site, scope and size of the project. Our strategic approach to landscape architecture aims to capitalize on the benefits of the resources we use while minimizing the environmental impact.
