Jan Rots is druk bezet. Sinds september is hij, door de ongelukkige ziekte van Wytze Patijn, plaatsvervangd decaan. Hij kwam terecht in hevig vaarwater: er moet flink bezuinigd worden binnen Bouwkunde. Rots probeert zo realistisch mogelijk met de situatie om te gaan. Hij stelt: “We hebben de laatste jaren kunnen benadrukken wat ons binnen de faculteit en als faculteit op zich verschillend of onderscheidend maakt. Het is nu tijd om ons meer te richten op onze overeenkomsten.“

Er moeten een aantal belangrijke beslissingen genomen worden. Is het lastig om op dit moment plaatsvervangend decaan te zijn?

“Het zijn natuurlijk lastige beslissingen, aan de andere kant zijn we met z’n allen verantwoordelijk voor de faculteit en moeten we de problemen niet uit de weg gaan. We kunnen niet een half jaar stil gaan staan. We proberen niet alleen van bovenaf maar in samenwerking met alle afdelingsvoorzitters een nieuwe route uit te stippelen. Mensen beginnen steeds meer te accepteren dat er iets moet veranderen. Toen bekend werd dat er bezuinigd moest worden stuitte dit eerst op ontkenning.

Het kan toch niet waar zijn dat we zoveel miljoen moeten inleveren? Daarna volgde bewustwording en acceptatie. En op dit moment zie ik dat steeds meer mensen binnen Bouwkunde gaan nadenken over hoe dingen zuiniger kunnen.”

Bent u niet bang om de boeken in te gaan als de boeman, de man die het slechte nieuws kwam brengen?

“Ik denk dat elke decaan in deze positie hetzelfde had gedaan. Wytze Patijn was aan het eind van de zomer al bezig met dit proces. In een voorgenomen besluit dat in september door Patijn is gemaakt stonden al een heleboel van de maatregelen die nu worden doorgevoerd. Ik zie mezelf dus niet als de boeman. Ik probeer vooral realistisch te zijn. Helaas is op dit moment de realiteit slecht nieuws. Ik weet daarnaast dat ook de afdelingsvoorzitters en diensthoofden de rol op zich nemen om de situatie uit te leggen aan de betrokkenen.

Het belangrijkst op dit moment is dat we met z’n allen door de zure appel heen bijten om uiteindelijk een gezondere organisatie over te houden.”

Wat is de meest vervelende beslissing die u heeft moeten nemen in de afgelopen periode?

“Dat zijn incidentele, persoonlijke gevallen. Er waren contracten die afliepen op 1 december of 1 januari. Er moest bijvoorbeeld een beslissing genomen worden over een specifieke promovendus, terwijl we nog niet het totale beeld hadden van alle promovendi. Ook omdat we door de brand achterliepen met de verwerking van Personeel & Organisatie moesten er soms tijdelijke beslissingen genomen worden. Dat vond ik lastig. Er zitten soms schrijnende verhalen achter. Soms zijn bij tijdelijke contracten intenties uitgesproken die nu in de huidige financiele context niet of niet volledig kunnen worden waargemaakt. Als je in zo’n geval te streng bent is dat te zuur voor betrokkenen en als je te flexibel bent kan het zo zijn dat er daarna nog dertig vergelijkbare gevallen langskomen, die allemaal hetzelfde willen. Hoe moet je daar dan mee omgaan? Ik vind het moeilijk dat ik niet aan elk individu kan uitleggen wat de precieze oorzaak en context van de bezuinigingen is. In het begin stuitte dat op onbegrip. Maar waar ik wel de kans had om het verhaal verder toe te lichten ontstond gelukkig begrip.

We hebben geprobeerd om met een brief de situatie uit te leggen. Volgens sommigen kon de timing wat beter. We hadden deze met Sinterklaas kunnen versturen of in het begin van het nieuwe jaar: slecht nieuws komt nooit gelegen. In de brief staat een belangrijk stukje over verwachtingen; dat individuele leidinggevenden niet zomaar intenties kunnen afgeven. Het is in het verleden vaak gebeurd dat een leidinggevende aangaf dat het wel goed zo komen met een contract, dat het wel zou worden verlengd. Dit soort dingen kunnen dus niet meer. Daarom staat er ook in dat de decaan

uiteindelijk dit soort beslissingen neemt. Dat ziet er dan uit alsof de decaan alles wil besturen, maar dat is natuurlijk niet zo.”

In de brief staat ook dat de maatregelen zowel personeel, operationeel als strategisch moeten worden uitgewerkt. Kunt u dit toelichten?

“Dat stond er toen vrij dun in, maar daar waren we en zijn we op dit moment hard mee bezig. Als je kijkt naar de algemene kredietcrisis zie je dat bij bedrijven eerst alle uitzendkrachten eruit gaan.

Dan denk je: wat is dat nou voor botte maatregel, daar zit toch wel een visie achter? Maar natuurlijk zijn deze bedrijven ook onmiddelijk bezig met het opnieuw inrichten van operationele processen en het aanpassen op strategisch gebied. Maar je moet beginnen met de harde maatregelen, anders kom je nergens. We zijn dus ook operationeel aan het kijken hoe wij ons onderwijs met behoud van kwaliteit kunnen doorzetten. Daarbij moet misschien de kwantiteit, met name het pluriforme aanbod in de master, worden beperkt. Daarnaast is het mogelijk om veel meer van elkaar’s onderdelen gebruik te maken en niet alleen maar paralellen trekken. Een afdeling is al bezig lezingenseries in verschillende tracks te combineren, dan krijg je met minder geld betere kwaliteit in vollere zalen.

Strategisch gezien kun je op het gebied van de bouwtechnologie of het constructiemanagement meer samenwerken met Civiele Techniek en mogelijk indikken op TU-niveau. We gaan kijken wat we op het gebied van proces, planning en management kunnen combineren met TBM en OTB. Daarnaast kijken we binnen de faculteit hoe we verbijzonderde leerstoelen en mastertracks weer meer kunnen combineren. Samengevat hebben we de laatste jaren kunnen benadrukken wat ons binnen de faculteit en als faculteit op zich verschillend of onderscheidend maakt. Het is nu tijd om ons meer te richten op onze overeenkomsten.“ In de brief staat ook dat bijzondere projecten en evenementen drastisch zullen worden teruggebracht. Welke projecten en evenementen krijgen het moeilijk?

“Op dit moment sponsoren we veel evenementen.

Daarin zullen we keuzes moeten maken. Podiumactiviteiten die niet van onderop komen krijgen het moeilijk. Ook de eindejaarsborrel zal worden afgeslankt. Maar evenementen als Indesem en BK Beats zijn tradities binnen de faculteit. Ik heb sterk de hoop dat we dit soort evenementen kunnen voortzetten, maar het primaire onderwijs en onderzoek staan op dit moment voorop.”

de eerste geldstroom vanuit de centrale TU Delft is afgenomen. De TU Delft krijgt minder geld vanuit het ministerie en daar hebben wij als Bouwkunde natuurlijk last van. Misschien dat wij daar nog meer last van hebben dan andere faculteiten omdat dit gerelateerd is aan de zogenaamde BaMa-koppeling, die te maken heeft met het aantal studenten.

Ten tweede hebben we de afgelopen jaren vanuit onze reserves, onze spaarpot, bewuste investeringen gedaan in onder andere de schoolvorming van architectuur, in leerstoelen en onderzoek bij afdelingen, maar ook in eenmalige investeringen in atelierconcepten in het oude gebouw.

De som van die twee effecten leidt ertoe dat we van 44 miljoen in 2008 teruggaan naar 37 miljoen in 2009. Vooruitkijkend naar 2010 zullen we nog verder bezuinigen tenzij we onze tweede en derde geldstroom weten op te krikken. Het is daarom noodzakelijk onze blik naar buiten te richten. We zijn blij dat we de laatste jaren binnen Bouwkunde een onderzoekscultuur hebben kunnen kweken op basis van de eerste geldstroom, maar dat moet nu worden doorgezet op basis van de tweede en derde geldstroom. We kunnen de inkomsten vergroten door sponsoren te zoeken. Dat kunnen bedrijven, instellingen of ministeries zijn. Nederland moet op alle vlakken en schaalniveaus’s worden herontworpen. Het is wat dat betreft zaak om in de grote programma’s bouw, ruimte, water en klimaat terecht te komen. Er wordt al door verschillende groepen in de faculteit aan gewerkt, met toenemend succes. Wat betreft de derde geldstroom liggen er mogelijkheden bij bedrijven. Op het gebied van climate design is er al aansluiting die verder wordt uitgebouwd. Wat het onderzoek betreft wil ik aangeven dat het op andere faculteiten, zoals TNW en Civiele Techniek, al langer gebruikelijk is dat er geen tijdelijke onderzoekers op eerste geldstroom worden aangenomen. Men mag daar pas een promovendus in dienst nemen als er een volledige dekking vanuit externe fondsen is voor vier jaar. Dat is de slag die wij al aan het maken waren en dat moet nu worden versneld.”

editorial Nieuw Nieuwe tijden breken aan. Een nieuw jaar, nu ook in China. Een nieuwe kans om nu wél iets van je goede voornemens te maken. Voor velen van ons een nieuw semester, voor sommigen van ons op zoek naar een nieuwe baan. En een nieuwe president. Oh wacht, niet van dit land, jammer.

Nieuwe beslissingen, lang niet altijd onomstreden, vragen om nieuwe verklaringen. Hiernaast komen die van onze interim-bij-nood-decaan Jan Rots, en ze zijn ook te vinden op de opnieuw in het leven geroepen Forumrubriek; blijf vooral reageren, en natuurlijk nieuwe dingen insturen.

Hoe nieuw is nieuw? Zijn bezuinigingen in moeilijke tijden nieuw? Is de jaarlijks veranderende manier om te printen en te plotten nieuw (ja, dit was al zo vóór de brand)? Is het nieuw om te zeggen dat “vroeger alles beter was” (oordeel zelf, in de speciale fotoreportage over dit gebouw)? Zijn het niet dezelfde oude gedachten in een nieuw jasje? Herhaalt de geschiedenis zich niet immers?

Gelukkig blijven er ook dingen bij het oude. In New Orleans demonstreert Han Meyer weer eens hoe Nederlanders omgaan met water, Hyperbody wil nog altijd laten zien hoe uniek het is, Sierksma en Robert Nottrot filosoferen als vanouds.

Ook niet nieuw is de gemeenschapszin op deze faculteit. Ondanks alles, zijn we er voor elkaar. Zo voel ik het tenminste. Studenten onderling, medewerkers onderling, maar ook door alle schalen heen. Ieder van ons heeft hier een eigen doel, maar uiteindelijk zijn we allemaal bouwko’s. En dat mag nooit verloren gaan.

Dat hou ik maar in m’n achterhoofd, als ik de volgende keer m’n weg baan door de zandhopen en modderpoelen rondom het gloedjenieuwe BK City.

Want uiteindelijk is elke dag een nieuw begin.

Is het niet zo dat er in 2008 teveel met geld gestrooid is?

“Zo zou ik het niet willen zeggen. Er zijn bewuste investeringen gedaan, die staan ook in ons meerjarenplan. Wat we nog wel gaan uitzoeken is hoeveel er nu waarin geinvesteerd is.”

“We moeten met zijn allen door de zure appel heen bijten” In hoeverre is de brand van invloed geweest op de huidige ‘kredietcrisis’ binnen de faculteit?

“De brand staat daar los van. Finance & Control, waar wij indringend contact mee hebben, heeft mij laten zien dat alles wat met de brand te maken heeft, zoals vervangingen, vernieuwingen en de verbouwing van de Julianalaan, in een apart bedrijf zit: ‘het brandbedrijf’. Deze heeft een geheel eigen financiële structuur, die los staat van wat er met de rest van de faculteit gebeurd.”

Wat is dan wel de oorzaak?

“De oorzaak van de huidige kredietcrisis binnen Bouwkunde is tweeledig. De eerste oorzaak is dat

Denkt u dat er sprake is geweest van wanbeleid?

“Nee dat denk ik niet. Als je naar de grafieken van de afgelopen jaren kijkt zijn we allemaal, collectief gegroeid.

Dat hebben we met z’n allen gedaan. Ik denk niet dat je het kunt wijten aan een paar dingen. We hebben met z’n allen van die groei geprofiteerd en ik vind ook dat we nu met z’n allen door de zure appel heen moeten. Ik denk dat het niet het moment is om te ‘zwartepieten’. Alle investeringen stonden in het meerjarenplan en we wilden die investeringen ook. Dat is dus bewust beleid geweest.”

“Investeringen in ateliers en het didactisch concept zijn goed besteed. Dat staat stevig op de kaart en verhoogt het rendement van de ontwerpprojecten.

Ook het versterken van de onderzoekshabitus was belangrijk voor Bouwkunde. Door tegenvallende TUD inkomsten moeten we de nieuwe initiatieven sneller dan gedacht laten indalen in de reguliere ‘going concern’ begroting. Dat is een tegenvaller die we niet hebben voorzien. Personele investeringen in nieuwe wetenschapsgebieden staan nu onder druk. Door de situatie zullen we strenger naar cijfers en financieen moeten kijken. We zullen de begrotings- en uitgavediscipline moeten aanscherpen. Maar nogmaals, ik wil niet ‘zwartepieten’. We hebben met z’n allen geprofiteerd van de situatie waarin er via de BaMa-koppeling veel geld was en we moeten nu ook met z’n allen terug. En dit betreft alle afdelingen, zeker ook de projecten van de diensten. Daar moeten we van 16 miljoen terug naar 12,5 miljoen. Daarmee wil ik geen oordeel uit wil spreken over de 16 miljoen van vorig jaar. We moeten nu gewoon terug en that’s it.”

Hoe ervaart u tot nu toe de reacties van de betrokkenen?

“Het begint met ontkenning. Wat is dit voor een onzin? Maar op dit moment is er meer sprake van acceptatie en wordt ook actie ondernomen en meegedacht over mogelijke oplossingen. Ik merk dat mensen echt aan de slag gaan om het onderwijs met behoud van kwaliteit efficiënter te maken. Er heerst volgens mij een soort consensus van hier moeten we doorheen. We hebben nog steeds moeite met de individuele, schrijnende gevallen.

3. VSBfonds Beurzenprogramma Geld nodig voor vervolgstudie of onderzoek in het buitenland?

VSBfonds Beurzenprogramma Met een VSBfonds beurs kunnen Nederlandse TUD-studenten na het afstuderen minimaal 3 maanden in het buitenland verder studeren of onderzoek doen.

Vooral omdat daar in het verleden verwachtingen zijn geschapen die nu niet kunnen worden waargemaakt. Daar proberen we heel zorgvuldig naar te kijken. Met als motto gelijke monniken gelijke kappen zijn we op dit moment met personeelszaken alle tijdelijke contracten en inhuur van externen en student-assistenten aan het bekijken. We proberen daarbij een zorgvuldig en homogeen personeelsbeleid te voeren. Natuurlijk zullen er nog steeds individuen teleurgesteld zijn, maar die zien de beslissingen dan wel in de totale context.”

Hoe wordt de Bouwkundegemeenschap betrokken in de nieuwe besluitvormingen?

“Er is op dit moment intens overleg met de afdelingsvoorzitters. De operationele uitwerking wordt besproken met de coördinatoren van de bachelor en de lab- coördinatoren van de master en de Onderwijs Commissie. Het is belangrijk dat de vaste staf zich meer gaat inzetten voor primair onderwijs.

Binnen de TU Delft geldt een policy die gedwongen ontslagen uitsluit. Om te bezuinigen kom je dan snel bij inhuur, materiele kosten en ondersteunende diensten. We kunnen en moeten meer dingen zelf doen. Een goed voorbeeld is dat er op dit moment voor het toezicht bij de tentamens geput wordt uit een poule van Delftse gepensioneerden.

Dit kost ons jaarlijks 70.000 euro. Volgens mij is het logisch dat docenten en promovendi weer zelf aanwezig zijn als surveillant bij hun tentamen. Het is hoogstens drie keer per jaar en op die manier kun je besparen.”

U bent nu, voor de tweede keer, plaatsvervangend decaan. Heeft u wel eens de ambitie om dit voor een langere periode te doen?

Of toch weer terug naar de mechanica?

Binnenkort beginnen de colleges weer, bij Civiel. Ik ben van plan om dat zelf te doen. Toen Wytze Patijn ziek werd heeft het College van Bestuur meteen aan drie mensen gevraagd of ze wilden helpen. Hans de Jonge werd gevraagd om zich bezig te houden met Building for Bouwkunde, de prijsvraag voor het ontwerp van het nieuwe gebouw.

Hans Wamelink werd gevraagd om de verbouwing van de Julianalaan te begeleiden. En ik werd gevraagd om de overige taken op me te nemen. Toen hebben wij alledrie gezegd: natuurlijk, dan helpen we. In eerste instantie zou dit voor drie maanden zijn, maar eind december is mij gevraagd of ik dit nog een periode wilde voortzetten. Toen heb ik opnieuw ja gezegd, maar daarbij wel aangegeven dat ik de andere taken niet helemaal op nul kan zetten. Medewerkers in de leerstoel Krachtswerking bij Bk en de leerstoel Constructiemechanica bij Civiel vangen gelukkig veel op. De duur van deze periode is afhankelijk van het College van Bestuur in samenspraak met Patijn. Daar kan ik niet zoveel over zeggen.

En wat vindt u het leukste om te doen?

College geven of decaan zijn?

“Haha, dat is een gemene vraag. In zo’n situatie is het woord leuk natuurlijk nogal ongepast. Ik vind het wel interessant om analytisch en nuchter na te denken over processen in de faculteit.

Daarnaast hou ik van mijn vak, de mechanica.. Ik denk dat de combinatie van de twee me het meest aanspreekt.”

I’ve always loved libraries. The whispering voices, the dusty volumes, the even dustier librarians with glasses perched on the edge of their noses. It is a place that is more than the some of its parts. In the architecture library I often found a much needed safe haven from the hectic goings-on in the faculty building. The usual chatter of students and staff was audible in almost every corner of the building, and though it was considerably less here, it was never completely absent. Architecture breeds talkers. No matter, that’s what I-pods are for.

I can’t really remember the first time I walked into the architecture library, in what we now must call the Old Architecture Building. This must certainly have to do with the sensory overload that characterized my first days at the faculty when I first started my studies. I remember thinking at some point that it was rather small for a faculty with 3000 or more students, especially considering all the image junkies and information wolves roaming the halls.

My second impression was that the space, though sober, was quite elegant. Everything had its place and there was a place for everything. It was very Dutch: Ordered.

Neat. No frills.

De letters dansen de laatste weken voor uw ogen, want sinds 19 januari heeft de nieuwe bibliotheek haar deuren geopend voor alle medewerkers en studenten. Lees tot u er bij neervalt, maar respecteer ondertussen wel het stiltegebod dat in de hele bibliotheek geldt.

Een mooie nieuwe bibliotheek moffel je niet weg in een donkere uithoek van het gebouw aan de Julianalaan. Wie de hoofdingang van BK City inloopt en daarna de trap neemt naar de eerste verdieping, staat al bijna in wat je Book City zou kunnen noemen: een volwaardige bibliotheek, verdeeld over enkele aaneengesloten ruimtes op de eerste verdieping en op de tussenetage.

“Wytze Patijn wist de afgelopen zomer vrijwel meteen: hier moet de nieuwe bibliotheek komen”, vertelt Anke Versteeg, account manager van de TU Delft Library. “Nu kun je zien dat die keuze een gelukkige is geweest.”

Anders dan oorspronkelijk was geraamd, bleek in het nieuwe onderkomen genoeg plaats voor alle 35.0000 boeken die te vinden waren in de oude bibliotheek. Dat is vooral te danken aan extra kastruimte en aan de verstevigde vloer in een gedeelte van de bibliotheek.

De voor onderzoek zo belangrijke Kaartenkamer heeft een plaats gekregen op de tussenverdieping: ongeveer 50 procent van de kaarten kon in deze nieuwe kaartenkamer worden ondergebracht. Ook de helft van de tijdschriftencollecties bevindt zich op deze verdieping. Er is een begin gemaakt met het opnemen van de vakbibliotheken (bouwtechnologie bijvoorbeeld) in de faculteitsbibliotheek, deze titels worden overigens niet uitgeleend. En in een binnenkort te plaatsen, klimaatgestuurde vitrinekast kan een selectie van de zeldzame boeken van voor 1850 worden tentoongesteld.

Stilte “Vooralsnog is besloten van de gehele bibliotheek een stiltegebied te maken”, zegt Versteeg. “Je stem draagt hier verder dan je zelf in de gaten hebt.”

In de oorspronkelijke plannen was nog sprake van studiewerkplekken aan de rand van het bibliotheekgebied, locaties waar je hardop kon overleggen.

Versteeg geeft een kleine rondleiding, wijst op enkele details. “Zie je die eiken tafels? In de rest van het gebouw zijn de tafels wit, maar zoveel wit vonden we te onrustig voor het oog. Natuurlijk waren we even bang dat eiken tafels tuttig gevonden zouden worden, maar uiteindelijk ziet het er juist wel stoer uit.”

Studenten en medewerkers kunnen hun laptop meenemen naar de nieuwe bibliotheek, maar bezoekers kunnen ook plaats nemen achter één van de twaalf ‘krachtige’ pc’s. Langs de ramen, die uitzicht bieden op de serres, kun je aan de lange, smalle tafels rustig even in een boek of tijdschrift lezen.

De vorige bibliotheek was in de periode voor de brand van 13 mei 2008 weer in haar oude luister hersteld. Sommige karakteristieke elementen uit deze bibliotheek duiken weer op aan de Julianalaan, zoals de Artisjoklampen.

Patijn heeft in januari een bezoekje gebracht aan de Bibliotheek, weet Versteeg. “Hij was erg enthousiast over het eindresultaat.”

Bibliotheek en kaartenkamer zijn voorlopig open op maandag t/m vrijdag van 9:00 tot 17:00 uur.

struck. Paper and fire… I feared the worst when it became clear how far the blaze had spread on that critical day. Just one spark would be enough to put an end to the most important architecture collection in the Netherlands. Miraculously the library was left intact and thanks to swift action on the part of the university, the library’s contents were rescued from the ruins of the building.

Hearing that the books, maps and drawings had been saved was a point of light in the dark days and weeks following the fire.

ONLEESBAAR Boeken kunnen een mens veel steun bieden – en dat geldt zeker voor de circa negenduizend stuks die samen de balie van de nieuwe bibliotheek vormen. Deze boeken kun je als bezoeker niet lenen of doorbladeren. Ze zijn aan elkaar gespijkerd en gelijmd tot één solide boekenmausoleum, waar je beide ellebogen onbekommerd op kunt neerplanten. Van een afstandje kun je in een oogopslag de verscheidenheid zien, al kun je naar de titels van de meeste boeken slechts raden.

Boekenliefhebbers hoeven geen slapeloze nachten te hebben: deze duizenden boeken zijn niet onttrokken aan exclusieve collecties. Het gaat hier eerder om boeken in de categorie ‘drie stuks voor vijf euro’. Als afgedankt kook- of kinderboek toch nog je oude dag mogen slijten als trotse bouwsteen van een bibliotheekbalie, en dan ook nog eens in een bibliotheek die vorig jaar even in de vlammen verloren leek te zijn gegaan - het is een happy end met een hoog Pixar-gehalte.

De gebruikte boeken zijn niet allemaal willekeurig gekozen. Voor de onderste en bovenste ‘boekenlaag’ van de balie zijn titels over architectuur gebruikt, onder meer restanten van het NAi. Een laag van transparante kunststof vormt de finishing touch. <b

More light at the end of the proverbial tunnel: a new library is in the make! Apparently, the bearing structure at the new architecture building allows limited dead weight on the floors. The library was therefore only possible after a secondary structure was added under the existing floor to provide extra support for the shelves and books.

I’m looking forward to seeing Bouwkunde’s books back where they belong: near the students and staff that use them most.

To become

‘24 hours coincidence or Odysseus’

The Archiprix is a design competition that forms a platform for young architectural talent. When you look at some of the participants, it is interesting to see that some of them are now well known, maybe even famous, in our world of architecture. Winka Dubbeldam, Archiprix 1990, founder of Architectonics, based in New York.

Liesbeth van der Pol, Archiprix 1989, head architect of the Amsterdam based Dok architecten. Last but not least, Michiel Riedijk, Archiprix 1990.

Together, with Willem-Jan Neutelings, he leads a successful firm in Rotterdam. Nearly twenty years later, we are at Archiprix 2009. The first national selection round took place in November 2008. The second round was in January 2009, In June 2009, in a yet unknown location, the winners will be presented. The next three projects are examples of what it takes to become an Archiprix winner or nominee.

Charibdis, the land of the Lotus eaters, the labyrintic library of Hades, the consonance baffle of the Sirens, the Merzbau of Calypso, the towers of the Cyclops, Circe’s palace, the theatre of stories. Each experience takes hold of some travellers. At the end you are the only left and return to your home, the Penelope.

The thesis they were trying to prove was “..architecture can exist without a program but also be born out of something else, like the evocation literature can posses.”

By taking the Odyssey as an aim for the program, they created their own world, with it’s own rules and logic. “That is the essence of an architectural project; creating a world wherein your design solution can come into existence.” Riedijk states that this world may not only exist out of the square meters, that are necessary for the program: “In Delft there is a tendency that all design choices should be based on programmatic or functional justifications. An architect should be able to realise a design using other methods and logics.”

In their created world on the Lago Maggiore, time and travel take in a important role. The designs are strategically placed so that the traveller can experience them all within 24 hours. “Time is a phenomena which the architect can’t influence.

But with architecture you can create an awareness of these kind of phenomena’s. By doing so, you are creating different layers and meanings in your design. Quality is added, which is not possible by only analysing the program.”

The journey it self creates this awareness. Each object is set in time, the journey connects and organises the objects. It influences the way you experience the buildings. Like in reading a book, you now have a start and an end. In between you have different chapters that are set in time.

Translating each adventure into a architecture was a difficult task. For this, they analysed historic parallel projects like the Danteum (Guiseppe Terragni) and the garden of Bomarzo. The projects are not

Each of them reflects the essence of the evoked sensual experience of a chapter. In this project you, as the reader, are taken on a 24 hour journey on the Lago Maggiore in Northern Italy. The first chapter is the beginning of the journey, translated in to a port. You set sail together with other travellers, passing by the pandemonium of Aeolus, the towers of Scylla and

about the literal and metaphorical translation of the stories. But they interpreted the stories by means of architectural elements. Thereby creating a design that evokes an own world.

Riedijk “We have tried to make a new composition out of the narrative elements that tell something about the Odyssey in their own way. This freedom of interpretation is a essential position of the architect.”

The last and most expressive building is the Penelope. This last stage is analogue to the homecoming of Odysseus. Riedijk: “It represents the urge for protection and at the same time the craving of the liability and thrill of travelling. The Penelope forms a fragile construction above an abyss. The glass floor makes the depth visible. You are aware of the danger of the deathly fall, at the same time you are victorious of gravity, like a modern Icarus.”

I think this design represents a lot of what Riedijk as an architect stands for. The style, the motifs, the statements are definitely visible in some of his realised work. “It are echo’s that are molded. They are present in the background whenever I design.

Some theme’s just keep coming back when you design. That’s why graduating should not form the end of your study, but the beginning of your professional life.” When looking at the abyss in media centre in Hilversum, the periscope in the college of Rotterdam or the water system in the Minnaert complex. They all evoke sensual experiences that are related to his graduation project. When I ask him how he transfers his ideas to his clients, he replies: “Be aware of how a story developes. Wether it’s technical, cultural, lingual, whatever. You have to know what it means for the client and what it means to you. When you mean the same, you are able to realise the ambitions of your firm. And for this you need to be able to develop and organise other logics and stories that the client isn’t aware of.”

Finally, he states: “Architecture is a language with tradition. You can learn it by observing other build-

ing. Buildings relate to each other just like words do in a language. Architecture has a grammar and it’s own language. When you are known with this language, you can create architecture without analysing the program over and over. Of course the program has to fit in perfectly, but it doesn’t mean the program should form the immediate cause for architecture.”

The structure of the Tecton Jochem Heijmans Archiprix 2007 Winner The project is one-of-a-kind. It is built, scale 1:1, in his parent’s garden. He transformed a old barn in to a garden house with enormous tectonic quality. The project gives insight of the world of The Tecton. The Tecton is a figure in Greek Mythology, according to Homeros, he was the first carpenter who took the role of the poet. The ‘poetics of construction’ -the tectonic- forms the main topic.

Heijmans: “Tectonic means a building of structure from within. The building is aware of the place where it stands en his own being. The building is the result of its own being. It’s form and expression are a result of the labour which created it.

You have to explore, experience it. See, feel, taste and smell it, it is a sensual experience.”

But everybody experiences their environment differently, isn’t it subjective?

“Sensual experiences are subjective, yes indeed.

Important is that you are open to an experience which you are aware of, one that you feel, sense.

A building is not about those fancy 3D renderings or nice photo’s on glossy paper.

When you make an analysis of a space or building, you should leave out the seeing sense. You will notice that there is much more to discover by using your other senses.”

‘The structure of the Tecton’

design-realisation’. Heijmans sees the realization phase not as managing or technical phase. It forms a source of inspiration and that’s why this phase is so important in his project about the ‘poetics of construction’. By doing so, “The work place itself in to the culture of tectonic research.”

This research took place on the location itself and consisted out of making analytical models through experimenting with materials. Later, the programs were inserted and questioned by it’s relationship with place, space, construction and material.

As in the other projects, text forms an inspiration source, yet in a whole different way: “The article ‘In search of sensual reality’ De Architect (no.5, 2006), was about the theory of tectonics and formed a important inspiration source through out my academic life. In a lot of project I referred to the article. Slowly the theory of tectonics became part of me. It gave me the freedom to interpret and transform it in my own personal way. Part of this theory was ontology, the science of the being of things. It encourages to think from within the place, atmosphere and material. How does the material feel? How does it want to be piled? How can you let it be part of the atmosphere?”

The garden house becomes part of place because of the living space. It is partially situated beneath ground level. When entering the small structure you only see the tree-tames – the direct context.

Heijmans made himself master of place and material, he created a sense for both and it is this sense on which a designed the project. “Not a difficult theoretical story, but one of sense.” , says the modern Tecton.

When I ask him if this rare, but time consuming approach still is possible in this fast-economic world, he replies: “It is difficult, I agree, but not impossible. Of course, I can render all kinds of 3D-models, but a building site related research and design process that respects the tectonic, are aspects that are more valuable for me”. This differentiates me

from regular design approaches present at many architecture firms.

Spaces, Voids and Poetics Simone Pizzagalli Archiprix 2009 nominee The project is situated in the metropolis of London. A prison in the midst of this huge city. The built and the interpretation of it forms the main topic. In his project he interprets built structure like it is a text, a “rigid syntactical structure”. Pizzagalli: “My research started, and never really ended, from my interest in books, the idea of text, of alphabet, the process of reading and interpreting words, the sound that a text has when is read as well as the one of a pause between two words.

I saw in this a lot similarities with a modern metropolis like London; its way of being confusedly ordered, open to interpretation, in time and space, lived and interpreted by every citizen in different and bizarre ways. The idea of the freedom and infiniteness that the alphabet gives, goes together with the process of writing, sequencing letters and words that is normative, strict and close; the idea of being able to misread a text, the ability to learn how to forget to read, to be free from the rule and the rigid syntactical structure of it, the possibility of finding spaces where is possible to interpret it, or better reconstruct it in new and different ways, were several of my main interests” With this interpretation of text and thus the metropolis as a text he described different neighborhoods and areas in London. In creating this world he made himself possible to literally ‘read’ an area.

“I got to work out the text as a drawing, taking and repeating words, connecting them, drawing on the text, taking areas, compose them into a new sequence. But still being what it was: the text, the structure, the context. From these premises I afterwards elaborated the text together with the

city (or the city as a text) and tried to give them a form into my building, or in a better way try to give with my building an interpretation of them both.

The city of London, the metropolis, the alphabet, the structure of language and the idea of reading as a free movement of the mind into a rigid complex structure of elements and fragments, are the main themes present in my project.”

His prison structure is the result of Pizzagalli’s reading of the city London as a text. It’s ironic that in this prison the mind is free but the body is not. So why did he chose a prison as project?

Simone answered with questions: “How can a text, a rigid set of elements composed following rigid rules, be such an infinite source of inspiration and imagination for a lot of different people? How can the structure of my building be so close, rigid, heavy, and at the same time be open transparent and light? The prison is a nterpretation of the city and the prison it self: “The way I see a city, like a text, a rigid syntactical structure, is like the structure of my building. But still, you are able to be free from this structure.”

In this rigid structure he created spaces, non-spaces and voids. His structure questions what what really is: “What is space, what is structure and what is non space? The project is on the border of what is building and what is space.” By questioning this he creates a freedom for interpretation. It is this freedom that he finds in the city: “When you have the city you have spaces you can not define, at this mental point you can interpret the city outside its syntactical structure. Just like in a text. It is the moment when you don’t think of the structural phrase is, but you interpret what is written. This is a space of freedom.”

“Everything that came after, or together with these premises, has been thought to express these ideas: the concept of cut surfaces overlapped into a sequence applied to the model making technique (a 70cm high cardboard structure, which consisted out of 2mm cardboard layers); the idea of compos-

ing different drawings into a temporary interpretative assemblage of my work for the panels; the way the building appears to be, probably abstract and theoretical but at the same time concrete and vivid as the images created in our mind when we read a novel.

I think this process of understanding the city and language that goes together with construction of my project cannot really have an end but can be infinitely unfolded and interpreted.”

So what does it take to become an Archiprix nominee? Actually, that is not for me to decide but for the Archiprix jury which changes every year. But I did notice three similarities. Firstly, all projects are dedicated to the phenomena of sense. Pizzagalli’s prison creates a freedom of interpretation and thereby of sense. Heijmans garden house let’s you sense, in real-life, what is the being of the site, the construction, the material and atmosphere. Riedijk is definetely clear in his stand that architecture should have a sensual experience and that this is not possible by only analysing the program.

Secondly, a superficial observation but still, when looking at the Tecton or Odysseus it might worth considering to compare your project with Greek Mythology.

Thirdly, literature: the project of Pizzagalli and Riedijk made me realise even more that architecture is a beautiful language, which can be written or built and can evoke images and senses.

Perhaps the most challenging part of Marten Dashorst’ graduation project fear(less): an architectural response to fear in the city, was its attempts to translate an explorative theoretical journey into concrete guidelines for a design proposal for London’s Liverpool subway station. In that sense the project addresses a classical concern regarding the transformative aspects of architecture and the opportunities of an architectural response to a broad set of societal conditions and constraints.

and design, the design process unfolded around four themes - outside/inside, public/ private, temporary/permanent, and horizontal/vertical. Around these – rather traditional - themes, the identified mechanisms and manifestations of fear in space, could be designerly tested. The great advantage of designerly confronting theoretical manifestations is that it allows designing with a concrete societal awareness but also that it allows reconsidering earlier theoretical statements.

What distinguishes this project from similar attempts is its efforts to move beyond a design proposal that is inspired by but in the end distinct from an initial theoretical frame.

Instead, it aimed to activate theoretical concerns through design guidelines rather than through abstract concepts.

Major downside of the design of scenarios is that it requires a choice (of one of the scenarios) after all. Since the criteria of making such choice are often not straightforward and moreover depend on explorations with the other, related themes, the design process often becomes unsatisfactory business of just-not-yet-controlled chaos or promising-but-unfinished proposals. Indeed, Marten suggested fascinating ideas for, for example, temporary infrastructures, but these proposals remained vague in their material, programmatic and architectural detailing.

Therefore, several additional steps had to be introduced between theory and design, and between concept and performance. The theoretical part of the research had itself to be divided between mechanisms and manifestations of fear in the city. With ‘mechanisms’ as the operative link between theory

Perhaps. Yet, the project seems convincing enough to have confidence in its suggested performance. Besides, the project’s major achievements are probably to be found in its attempts to move beyond traditional oppositions between societal, theoretical concerns and the concreteness of design, but also between structure and agency, and between domination and resistance.

De flat telt 14 verdiepingen met 196 woningen, de drager is gebouwd volgens de tunceerd, waardoor een korte bouwtijd werd bereikt.

Veel academici begonnen hun wooncarrière in een ERA-flat en zijn later elders gaan wonen. Ik woon er nog, inmiddels in een gemeenschap van wereldwijde herkomst. En, in tegenstelling met wat u als lezer misschien verwacht: ik voel mij hier thuis.

Gedurende mijn studietijd in Delft werd ik omringd door mensen die het communisme fanatiek uitdroegen, terwijl ik, vooral door een beschermde jeugd, nog niet in staat was om welke ideologie dan ook te omarmen. Nu, in een wereld die klein is geworden door intensieve communicatie, in een wereld die eigenlijk te klein is geworden voor strijd tussen mensen, maar samenwerking vergt om de bedreigingen, die mede het gevolg zijn van het kapitalisme, te bevechten, ben ik toch een beetje communist geworden. In ieder geval ben ik doordrongen van het besef dat, mede gezien de tijdelijkheid van onze fysieke aanwezigheid, streven naar materiële status ongepast is.

Zoals gezegd, ik voel mij thuis in mijn ERA-flat.

Daarvoor moet ik mij wel steeds inspannen. Enerzijds helpt mij mijn geweten (om mijn woonsituatie te accepteren), anderzijds vullen dromen en fantasieën mijn menselijke verlangens (naar rijkdom,

y Master’s degree diploma focused on the increased influence of fear in the public and private spaces of the modern (western) city.

Global market capitalism and fear for the influence of exterior powers such as terrorism has lead to a new movement in defining our cities, both on an organizational as well as on a spatial level. Governments reorganize their operational structures to resembles big multinational companies more and more now; responsibilities are outsourced, and the civilian is seen more as a customer that has specific needs that need to be forfilled, that a critical element that both produces and consumes the city we live in.

These functions are similar to the kiosks often found in stations. Whereas those are merely put

The result is an increase in the privatization of our cities. Public space is more and more regulated according to a wide array of rules and compliances, while initiative and surprise are slowly being banned from our city centers.

I believe it is the architects’ role to challenge not only the status quo, but also to be on the lookout for future developments that might change our environments for the worse, instead of for the better.

The building I have designed to test and implement these statements is a metro station at Liverpool Street in London. I chose the program of a metro station for various reasons. It is one of the few spaces in our cities that is still both public

and private in its uses and aesthetics. It is both a circulation and an occupational space. Finally, the fact that it is largely situated underground, makes it a perfect test for more basic elements of a good architectural proposal such as spatiality, orientation and light.

Most of the existing metro station is located in an old block just opposite of the main entrance to Liverpool Street Station. Its continuous expansion over the years has led to an incomprehensible layout, where it is easy to get lost while underground.

The two lines that meet at the station - one subsurface at -5m and one deep line at -16m - have been made accessible in two different ways. The

ground plane is essentially extended to the subsurface line through a building-wide staircase, while the deep line is accentuated vertically through a number of escalators that revolve around a shaft bringing in daylight onto the lower levels.

The building was designed from the section instead of from the plan. Since the program initially only asked for a metro station, the design of the extra space was essential; both to test my thesis and in aiding the usability of the building.

What resulted is I believe a building that offers the choice of public and private, without defining too many aspects of the usage and occupation of its spaces. A building where fear is an option, but never a result.

Although these spaces as configured as completely public, the private element has been cleverly woven into their designs. Fences that become display

stands, mobile bars that designate areas of consumption, and the choice of ‘soft’ materials such as wood for occupational areas and ‘hard’ materials such as concrete for the circulation spaces.

he transition from inside to outside and vice versa is one of the recurring themes in the design.

Metro travel normally invokes a feeling of confusion and disconnection from the city around us.

We enter the underground somewhere, and more often than not, emerge somewhere completely different. This sudden change is often enhanced by the problematic layout of a metro station.

The street facade, functioning as a continuous wall much like the ones we are familiar with in the city, opens up at certain points, allowing peeks into the building. When one enters, he does so through an outside-inside-outside sequence, where the station hall functions as another outside again; the station in the open air.

The other approach - from metro to city - is similarly diffused and broken up in more imaginable elements through the use of light and spaces. In-

stead of a small tunnel suddenly opening up into a spacious platform, the transition is more smooth and gradual.

The station hall is designed as a continuous ground plane, where the boundary between under- and overground is hardly discernable. From the moment of entering the station the destination - the platform - is already visible. Indeed, often metro stations are abundant in spaces. The problem however, is that these spaces often lack a clear function. I have solved this by designating all spaces both as circulation and occupational spaces.

The roof of the structure is comprised of a dependance for the London Transport Museum. Ironically, at its current location in Covent Garden, the museum is disconnected from any kind of public transport. I have proposed to move the metro section to my design, where, high in the sky, it offers a visibility unfamiliar to the users of the metro.

Nieuwe mogelijkheden Op een maandagmorgen in augustus 2005 werd New Orleans opgeschrikt Dutch Dialogues door een orkaan in de derde categorie, inmiddels beter bekend als Katrina. Op uitnodiging van New Orleans werd een deDe gevolgen voor de stad en haar inwoners waren desastreus. Doordat legatie Nederlanders gevraagd om in een aantal workshops mee te denken over nieuwe oplossinhet watersysteem van de stad faalde, verloren velen mensen hun leven en gen voor het watersysteem en de urbane context. waren de ministeries VROM en nog veel meer hun huis en haard. Tachtig procent van de stad stond blank. Vertegenwoordigd V&W, de stedebouwkundige diensten van RotterDe gevolgen zijn nog steeds merkbaar. Van de gehele middenklasse die dam en Amsterdam, het ingenieursbureau Arcadis, het onderzoeksinstituut Deltares en enkele landde stad ontvluchtte is vijftig procent nooit teruggekeerd. In de stad is een schapsarchitecten. Vanuit de TU-Delft nam proernstig tekort aan leraren, doktoren en advocaten. Veel van de bescha- fessor Han Meyer van de afdeling Stedebouw deel aan de delegatie. Deze workshops vonden plaats digde huizen zijn nooit meer herbouwd. Eén groep hield zich bezig met de stad als geheel, een andere groep werkte aan het oostelijk stadsdeel en de groep onder leiding van Han Meyer hield zich bezig met het afvoerputje van New Orleans: de Hoffman Triangle. Deze wijk is een van de meest kwetsbare van New Orleans. Het is een van de laagste delen van de stad en daardoor extreem kwetsbaar voor hevige regenval. Daarnaast is het een wijk die, door het gebrek aan ruimtelijke kwaliteit, economisch en sociaal in verval is geraakt. De taak die Meyer en zijn groep zich stelden, was om oplossingen te bedenken die nieuwe ideeën op het gebied van de waterhuishousing combineren met een verbetering van het stedelijk milieu. In oktober 2008 leidde dit tot het ontwerp van het Cascade Project.

Cascade Project Wat Meyer het meest verbaasde bij het eerste bezoek aan New Orleans was het enorme drainagevermogen van het watersysteem: “Ze vertrouwen heel erg op de kracht van de techniek. De pompcentrales hebben een capaciteit die tien keer groter is dan in Nederland.” De kracht van deze pompcentrales is niet per definitie goed. Meyer: “Door het constante onttrekken van grondwater is de grond sterk ingeklonken. Dit heeft tot gevolg dat overstromingen als gevolg van frequente zware regenbuien steeds vaker voorkomen. Bovendien gaat de ondergrondse infrastructuur, zoals rioolpijpen en leidingen, kapot. Het is dus van groot belang om de natuurlijke waterbalans te herstellen om verder inklinken van de grond te voorkomen.”

Het voorstel van het Cascade project is om de huidige strategie, die puur gericht is op drainage, te verlaten en het model toe te passen dat wij in Nederland kennen als vasthouden-opslaan-afvoeren.

Op die manier wordt de natuurlijke waterbalans hersteld en is er in natte periodes mogelijkheid tot opslag, terwijl in droge periodes deze opslag kan worden ingezet om het grondwaterpeil op de vereiste hoogte te houden. Om dit vorm te geven bedachten Meyer en zijn groep een cascade systeem dat de Mississippi in het zuiden verbindt met het pompstation dat gelegen is op het laagste punt in de wijk. Vanaf dit pompstation wordt het water getransporteerd naar het Pontchartrain meer ten noorden van de stad. De cascade zal een continue stroom van water veroorzaken, die door middel van natuurlijk filters wordt gezuiverd. Zijtakken in het systeem zullen in natte periodes het water van de tuinen, straten en gebouwen verzamelen en in droge periodes het grondwaterpeil op niveau houden.

wijk in de vorm van een driehoek. Dit heeft tot gevolg dat er in het grid veel driehoekige plekken zijn ontstaan met een onbestemd karakter. Deze plekken bieden echter een goede kans om het watersysteem te integreren in de urbane context. Door het watersysteem op deze plekken te verbreden onstaat de mogelijkheid om vegetatie aan te brengen die het water filtert. Op deze manier zouden deze onbestemde plekken een aantrekkelijk plek in de wijk kunnen worden.

Een ander belangrijk onderdeel van het Cascade plan is om de dichtheid te laten variëren met de hoogte van het terrein. Het terrein van de wijk loopt af van de relatief hoog gelegen Mississippioevers naar het pompstation op het laagste punt.

De hoger gelegen gebieden zijn in noodsituaties veiliger dan de lager gelegen gebieden en moeten dus volgens Meyer en zijn groep een hogere dichtheid hebben dan de lager gelegen gebieden. Meyer: “Het is misschien beter om in sommige delen van de stad helemaal niet meer te bouwen, maar juist andere, veiligere delen compacter te maken.”

De voorgestelde ingrepen van het Cascade project moeten leiden tot een drieledig resultaat. Ten eerste mogen er door de verbetering van de waterbouwkundige structuur geen overstromingen meer plaatsvinden. Ten tweede moeten de ingrepen in de water- en stedenbouwkundige structuur leiden tot een wijk die coherenter en diverser is. En ten derde moeten er hogere dichtheden ontstaan in de gebieden die daar het meest geschikt voor zijn.

Nederland in New Orleans De plannen van het team werden in New Orleans goed ontvangen. Het was natuurlijk al langer duidelijk dat men onder de indruk is van het Nederlandse watermanagment. Meyer: “In New Orleans ging het zelfs zover dat sommigen van ons korting kregen in winkels als bleek dat we uit Nederland kwamen.” Op de vraag of het terecht is dat Nederland deze naam heeft, zegt Meyer: “Het is natuurlijk waar dat wij een lange en leerzame historie hebben met het water. Toch is het Nederlands model niet rechtstreeks toe te passen op New Orleans. De context en daarmee de uitkomst zijn totaal verschillend. Er zijn wel een aantal basisprincipes die in New Orleans zeer goed gebruikt kunnen worden, maar bijvoorbeeld het feit dat de Mississippi ter plaatse van New Orleans een kleine 60 meter diep is, heeft totaal andere gevolgen voor de delta dan in Nederland.”

Een van de belangrijkste redenen voor Meyer om op de uitnodiging van New Orleans in te gaan, is zijn onderzoek naar verstedelijkte delta’s binnen de afdeling stedenbouw. Meyer: “Deltagebieden zijn van oudsher strategische en vruchtbare plekken.

Nog steeds is wereldwijd in deltagebieden (bijvoorbeeld in China en India) de grootste stedelijke groei te vinden.”

Maar wat kunnen wij wat dat betreft leren van dit Amerikaanse voorbeeld? Meyer: “In Nederland hebben wij een gigantisch vertrouwen in ons watersysteem. De dijken worden zo gebouwd dat ze eens in de tienduizend jaar kunnen doorbreken.

Dit is een kleine kans, maar het kan een keer gebeuren. Wij kunnen en moeten wat dat betreft leren van de rampscenarios die in New Orleans zijn toegepast. Bij Katrina ging het natuurlijk mis, maar bij Gustav in 2008, was de stad binnen no-time geëvacueerd.”

Vervolg van het project The Dutch Dialogues krijgen in februari een vervolg wanneer een delegatie uit New Orleans een bezoek zal brengen aan Nederland, onder andere om de Aquaterra conferentie bij te wonen. Voor de doorgang van het project is het belangrijk dat er geld komt vanuit de Amerikaanse overheid. Louisiana, de staat waar New Orleans in ligt, is een van de armste staten van Amerika. Meyer: “Ze kijken eigenlijk met jaloezie naar Nederland, waar de bescherming tegen het water van oudsher een onontkoombaar onderdeel is geweest van het leven zodat er altijd een relatief groot deel van het staatsgeld beschikbaar was. New Orleans is slechts een klein stadje in een groot land met heel veel andere problemen.”

Een ander belangrijk probleem dat moet worden opgelost is dat de waterwerken volledig in handen zijn van het Army Corps of Engineers. Zij bepalen op dit moment wat er gebeurt op het gebied van de waterbouw. Deze autonomie zal moeten worden veranderd in een meer coöperatieve instelling, willen de nieuwe plannen doorgang kunnen vinden.

1st steps Step #4: Looking for a job There are more than 1,2 million architects registered worldwide so finding a job in this small world of ours is not an easy thing to do. Yet, for a lot of young graduates working for an office the first couples of years is more or less the moment they have been waiting for! After years and years of studies this is the time to prove that it was not all for nothing. The world is waiting for you to change it! Even if your plan is to eventually start your own office, working for somebody else can be a great experience: learn how to organize and manage a project till the final moment of realization, how to do practical studies like a decent budget, create your own network and discover new possible clients and sources of work! This makes the choice of the office to work a very important one. You definitely don’t want to stay looking for a job till you grow old but you wouldn’t want to end up in a dark, gloomy place where the most interesting project would be buildings out of matchboxes.

As there is no architectural paradise on earth, we can indicate some places to be avoided, for example the ones requiring to spend a big amount of compulsory internships before being able to get hired as a professional architect. In Estonia, for example, you would have to spend 5 years of bad payments and uncreative work in order to finally get a decent working position. Denmark, Greece, Spain, Finland, The Netherlands and Turkey are the right choice in this case. No exams, no required internship, you can start working right away! For the rest of the European countries there is usually an average of 2-3 years of internship before becoming a full time, skilled, responsible architect!

If you want to be fast in getting a job, avoid Japan, avoid Italy. They are the countries with the highest percentage of architects per inhabitants. For Italy alone, there is one architect for about every 500 people. Even if they are all homeless or if they are so wealthy as to be able to afford a new house every few years you are still in danger of nobody needing your help.

Andorra and Monaco are the countries with the lowest unemployment rates in Europe, actually they have no unemployment at all. Would that be the place for you? Hm… maybe not… they so small that probably there are only a few building projects a year, not to mention the possible variety of architecture firms based there. On the other hand, even if it sounds strange Ireland is top on the number of projects per architect in Europe, almost twice as much as Switzerland that comes second. Judging from this, you should desperately avoid the Balkans: Rumania, Turkey, Cyprus and Greece have the less realized projects per architect per year.

Between wall and door

Hyperbody’s Interactive Curtain project approaches things differently In the spring semester of 2008, a group of five students and three tutors designed and built a portal – but this isn’t just your ordinary door. This portal was designed to physically react to human activity in its proximity, opening up when people want to walk through it and closing when there’s nobody nearby, among other things. It is a good example of the quite different approach to designing and building architecture at the Hyperbody studio.

As one of the students Marcus Chaidez puts it, the Interactive Portals project is “a design project at an architectural scale, which incorporates concepts of interactivity involving ‘users’ and ‘networks’ of systems.” The first day of the assignment the students made a small ‘portal’ out of ‘Lego Mindstorms’ building blocks. These toys were to be attached to small motors and sensors (infrared, distance, button etc), in order to create a dynamic ‘machine’, designed to react to different external impulses.

The model itself wasn’t anything special, but it did open up a new way of thinking. It led to a new way of conceiving and creating an architectural object, by taking impulses from external factors as the driving force, totally free from the “standard” set of rules that define such an object.

When design of the actual portal began, the students’ first drafts were quickly rejected; formal exercises in advanced 3D modelling software were certainly not the way to go. The students were taught to let go of ‘design’ in the ordinary sense of the word, with ‘images’ and ‘forms’. Maria van Embden Andres, another student working on the portal: “Everything you were used to was turned upside down. This thing we made was almost like a creature, which reacts to the outside world; the question was not how people would react to a building, but how a building would react to people.

It almost became an organism in this way.”

The first week resulted in the presentation of some concrete design ideas. The main concept evolved into an idea of the portal being materialized as a ‘wall’, which sensed when it was approached by a person, and would then automatically create an opening to allow passage. This wall would be made of a series of strings that could be moved and/or retracted to create this opening. The portal would act as a ‘transition gateway’ between two different spaces, forming a space within itself, which would be a ‘room’, where people could ‘meet’ in an enclosure of a free-flowing polystyrene shape.

Other ideas were a ‘game element’, in which the wall would allow or refuse certain users based on specific traits or by data supplied by the other portals in the system. These ideas were presented at the end of the first week to the Hyperbody team, including Kas Oosterhuis and Henriëtte Bier.

In the following weeks, the main concept of a sensing wall was solidified into a singular ‘loop’ shell, 7 metres wide and 2.5 metres tall, made of smaller panels that could move in order to create openings in the wall. After a few mock-ups and trials, the consensus was that the shell should be made of polystyrene, while the strings would be composed of thin sheets of transparent Perspex plastic, cut up in 10 cm strips. The panels were to be activated by pistons, controlled by the computer, which conversed input from the sensors into output to the motors driving the pistons. Still, the technical problems were numerous, the budget was tight, and time was limited. In close collaboration with the team at Hyperbody and with the aid of Jan-Willem Breider from Civil Engineering, many iterations and design ideas over the technical issues were explored. After numerous attempts with

many different design variations of panel sizes, number of openings etc, the use of pistons was abandoned in favour of a system of cables. Each panel would have a structure above it that is connected to a small motor (similar to those used in windscreen wipers). This motor would wind the cable, which would in turn pull on the structure and panel, pushing it down onto the strings, thus bending the strings and creating an opening in the wall.

Because this cable system is not self-supporting, the idea of the thin plastic Perspex strips had to be abandoned in favour of PVC pipes that could support the weight of the panel and the structure overhead, but still bend in order to create the ‘door’ openings. This panel-and-cable system was, again, tested in many mock-ups until a working solution was found: by connecting the steel break-cable with a structured enclosure to a pyramidal frame, the panels could be sufficiently actuated to create the openings. Also the structure supporting the cables on the top of the panels was constructed of a composite system, after numerous variations.

The resulting pyramidal structure was constructed out of fibreglass poles (from tent structures), and small steel connection pieces were produced with the gracious help of Kees Baardolf at the Metals Workshop of the Faculty.

The overall shape of the ‘loop’ was continually refined. The resulting shape is an asymmetrical form that re-introduces the original idea of a space within the portal by including benches that emerge on either side of the shell. As said, the original idea was to make this shell out of polystyrene with a fibreglass covering, a common technique in boat building. However, after much discussion about the economic feasibility, lack of experience in the team and time constraints, the method was abandoned in favour of a more traditional method of framing with wood and MDF with cladding. This wood structure would also allow space for the cables and motor blocks that would be used to actuate the panels with. The structure was produced by constructing the framing in a computer 3D model in Rhino, and ‘unrolling’ the surfaces onto 2D planes where they could be printed and used in templates for traditional sawing techniques.

The most difficult process in the realisation of the portal was the design and construction of the movable panels that were actuated by the system.

They had to be lightweight, easily and firmly connected to the PVC tubes on which they would be supported, strong enough to handle the forces from the pulling of the motors on the steel/fibreglass structure connected to the cables, and they also had to be aesthetically pleasing; they would carry out the main task of movement of the portal.

A design of interlocking fibreglass panels using the metaphor of a ‘watch band’ was developed, again after many many mock-ups and trials.

Fibreglass has the positive traits of being lightweight and incredibly strong. The techniques to construct fibreglass objects are numerous, from hand-laying to vacuum techniques, all using a wide variety of different material densities of fibreglass and resin types. After discovering that hand-

laying a panel on a positive mould of Styrofoam was far too cumbersome and time consuming, and after another series of tests on variations of this method, the team decided that another method should be found. Eventually, the final solution was to construct moulds and use the vacuum system, carried out with the assistance of the Composites Lab at the TU Campus. The idea was to create a mould that could be used over and over to create all 12 panels, however in the process the mould broke unexpectedly, forcing the team to recreate it after each individual panel was completed. And then, finally, after the completion of all the panels, the whole system was assembled and the moving fibreglass panels worked exceptionally well.

However, the project had a tragic ending. The Interactive Portal was to be included in an exhibition in Sevilla, Spain, together with three other portals: one by another Hyperbody group, two by teams from the Faculty of Industrial Engineering. After the design project was finished and the students got their grades, four days were left to work on it a little bit further. In these days, the crucial connection was to be made: the connection of the sensors to the motors, the key idea of the whole project.

And the day they wanted to start doing this, was the 13th of May 2008.

What also had to be developed alongside the material wall was the software and hardware concerning the interactive components of the system. The portal was designed with mounted ultrasonic distance sensors that would be able to identify the location of users coming within a certain range within the portal. This data is collected and interpreted in a computer within the portal and is used as an input through a patch created with MAX/MSP. In a series of workshops, the team was instructed on how to implement the use of sensors and MAX/ MSP software to create the desired programmed effects. The programming allows for six independent openings to be created at one time, allowing six people to traverse the portal simultaneously.

Another option is to create different degrees of an opening in the wall, dependant on the distance of a user from the portal, amongst other things.

very interdisciplinary; in order to get everything done, the team needed people from all faculties of the TU Delft (and also from Hogeschool InHolland for the fibreglass panels), for materials, tools, information, and whatever is needed in order to make such a thing.

What also stands out is the technical aspect of the project, which comprised nearly 80% to 90%. Marcus: “What brought the project forward was trial and error. Fast prototyping, making models in the computer, making physical models and mock-ups, only to reject them and making new ones, until a suitable solution is found.” This is in contrast to the view many students have on the Hyperbody studio: flashy, complex 3D structures and shapes, seemingly conceived with the stroke of a paintbrush from an artist put into a computer, about which complex and nearly incomprehensible theoretical texts are written. “This project,” says Maria, “is an example of the direction the Hyperbody studio is going into: from the more theoretical and formal approach to the actual making of interactive and non-standard components. It moves much more towards practice.”

The portal, “Interactive Curtain”, was successful as an interactive object within the context of the exhibition, and could also be perceived as a prototype for an interactive façade built on a larger scale, perhaps for an entire building.

However, the students do remain realistic about the implications of such a system on a larger scale. Maria: “The money is not there to develop building parts like this one to be used in buildings – this is not the car industry. Maybe the development can concentrate on smaller building components, using them in a larger system in which they can interact with each other. As tragic as this is, the students have fond memories of it. The close corporation between them and the tutors was highly appreciated, as was the great degree of knowledge and enthusiasm of the tutors regarding these structures. According to Marcus, the process was an “intensive, fast-track design project that was extremely successful in teaching and inspiring the team as to the potential of using interactivity as a main design element within an architectural project.” The making of the project was

Installeren gaat eenvoudig en je hebt hier geen administratorrechten voor nodig. Nadat je binnen een paar minuten de software hebt geïnstalleerd geef je aan waar je je in het gebouw bevindt. Vanaf nu is het slechts een kwestie van de laptop locken en unlocken.

Wanneer beveiligt VirtuaLock mijn computer?

Tien seconden nadat de laptop is gelocked (bijvoorbeeld door de screensaver of handmatig), start de beveiliging. Alle aangesloten apparatuur, zoals USB sticks, de netwerkkabel en de stroomkabel worden in de gaten gehouden. Als er apparatuur wordt losgemaakt, gaat het alarm af.

Tijdens normaal gebruik merk je overigens niets van VirtuaLock en kun je gerust apparatuur inpluggen en verwijderen.

Hoe lock ik mijn computer?

Wanneer gaat er een alarm af?

Het alarm gaat af zodra er iets uit de laptop wordt gehaald. Om ervoor te zorgen dat je laptop niet wordt meegenomen zonder dat het alarm afgaat, zorg je er dus altijd voor dat je laptop aan de kabel ligt en is aangesloten op het netwerk met de netwerkkabel en dat de stekker in het stopcontact zit. Een dief moet altijd de laptop en accessoires losmaken om de laptop mee te kunnen nemen.

Zodra dit gebeurt, is er vijf seconden bedenktijd.

Als binnen vijf seconden de laptop niet opnieuw is aangesloten, gaat het luide alarm op de laptop af. Nabije collega’s worden op dat moment via een ‘waarschuwings pop-up’ op hun laptop geïnformeerd over de diefstalpoging.

Om diefstal van laptops en computers van medewerkers in het nieuwe BK City tegen te gaan, wordt er gestart met een handige anti diefstal oplossing: VirtuaLock.

DOOR HET FLEXTEAM

Ik zit iedere dag op een totaal andere plek, kan ik VirtuaLock gebruiken?

Ja, dat kan juist heel goed. Het enige dat je hiervoor moet doen, is voordat je je laptop verlaat even te checken op welke locatie de laptop staat in het VirtuaLock-scherm. Dit is heel gemakkelijk te wijzigen en spreekt voor zich zodra je je hebt aangemeld. Als je een aantal werkplekken gebruikt, kun je een profiel voor die plekken aanmaken, zodat je direct via het menu in het taakbalkicoon gemakkelijk van profiel kunt wisselen.

Hoe unlock ik mijn computer?

Unlocken gaat door het invoeren van je Windows wachtwoord. Als het alarm per ongeluk afgaat kun je, door het invoeren van je wachtwoord, het alarm afzetten. Je collega’s zijn echter inmiddels al op de hoogte. Probeer vals alarm daarom zoveel mogelijk te beperken, zodat collega’s er niet vanuit gaan dat ‘het wel weer vals alarm zal zijn’.

Wat doe ik als ik een alarm hoor afgaan of als er een alarmmelding in mijn scherm verschijnt?

VirtuaLock is ontwikkeld om computerdiefstal tegen te gaan. Echter veiligheid van de medewerkers gaat altijd boven die van materiële goederen. Neem dus nooit risico’s als je een vermoedelijke dief benadert.

Wat je wel kunt doen is het volgende: bekijk de details van het alarm in de pop-up die op je scherm verschijnt. Hierin staan ook de gegevens van de eigenaar van de laptop. Inspecteer met meerdere collega’s de betreffende ruimte. Houd altijd een veilige afstand van de mogelijke dief, probeer een goede omschrijving van het uiterlijk te onthouden en waarschuw de beveiliging. Een veilig BK City doen we samen.

Hoe kan ik op de kaart aangeven waar ik precies zit?

Probeer zo exact mogelijk aan te geven waar je zit.

In het geval van diefstal, weten je collega’s precies waar ze jou -en misschien de dief met laptop onder de arm- kunnen vinden. Zorg er in ieder geval voor dat in je ‘locatie specificatie’ het ruimtenummer waar je je bevindt is opgenomen.

Moet ik VirtuaLock als screensaver instellen?

Je mag zelf beslissen wat voor screensaver je op je laptop of computer wilt hebben. Het voordeel van de VirtuaLock screensaver is dat je potentiële dieven afschrikt. Met de VirtuaLock sticker op je laptop / adapter en de screensaver aan, weet iedere potentiële dief dat het niet slim is om de laptop mee te nemen. Tijdens het installeren van VirtuaLock kun je ervoor kiezen om ook de screensaver te installeren.

Ik ben student en wil ook gebruik maken van VirtuaLock in BK City, kan dat?

Nee, op dit moment wordt VirtuaLock alleen aangeboden voor medewerkers. Afhankelijk van het succes zou in de toekomst besloten kunnen worden om VirtuaLock ook aan te bieden voor studenten.

Ik heb geen laptop maar een vaste computer die niet snel wordt gestolen. Moet ik ook VirtuaLock installeren?

We raden iedereen aan om VirtuaLock te installeren.

Hoe meer mensen zich aanmelden, des te groter de beveiliging is van computers en laptops binnen BK City. Jouw computer heeft wellicht minder kans op diefstal, maar aangezien iedereen die is aangemeld een waarschuwing krijgt als er een laptop in de buurt wordt gestolen, help je op deze manier mee om BK City diefstalvrij te maken. Als je het niet voor jezelf doet, doe het dan voor je ‘laptop-collega’s’!

Kan ik ook andere zaken beveiligen met VirtuaLock?

Bijna alle accessoires die je in de laptop steekt, zoals een beveiligingskabel, stekker, usb-stick, printer etc. zijn beveiligd via VirtuaLock als je laptop gelocked staat. Een alarm gaat namelijk af zodra er iets wordt verwijderd uit de laptop.

Ik wil Virtualock ook buiten de TU Delft gebruiken, kan dat?

Buiten de TU Delft worden er geen collega’s gewaarschuwd bij een diefstalpoging. Buiten de TU Delft kun je het best het profiel ‘Offline mode’ gebruiken. Het luide alarm werkt verder op precies dezelfde afschrikwekkende manier.

The event closest to the perception of architecture is the Built Emotion workshop. The workshop will take 23 hours in honour of the 23rd cycle of 5 years of existence. Participants will work on a design of a small space in teams of 3, 4 or 5. The central question of the workshop is whether you can manipulate the emotions of the visitors of your design. The workshop is organized in collaboration with Robert Winkel and the Netherlands Architecture Institute. A professional jury will choose one design that is to be build. Enrolling is still possible: just send an email to builtemotion@stylos.nl!

The celebrations will reach their top in the final party: The Stylosophy Gala! The location is the Groothandelsgebouw in Rotterdam. Anyone who wants to celebrate a proper 115th anniversary should not do so with Stylos. The controversy surrounding Stylos’ history was emphasized when the board of P.S. brought us a birthday cake. “Happy 63rd birthday!” they said.

The book that was made on the 100th anniversary mentions the celebration of a past that was condemned upon the foundation of contemporary Stylos.

Architecture students were once represented by “Delftsch Bouwkundig Studenten Gezelschap Prachtische Studie” which is now the study associations of the faculty of Civil Engineering only.

This association held traditional values in high regard and was always focused on the past. In 1945 architecture students therefore decided to establish ‘Semper Spatium,’ which had won over most of the students within a year. P.S. seemed to be diminishing silently. The architecture students of Semper Spatium performed what can be described best as artificial insemination on P.S. And so Stylos was born on the 22nd of Feb-

ruary 1947. “D.B.S.G. Practische Studie” was never heard of again. This is what Prof. Ir. M. Gout, member of the first board of Stylos, wrote in the anniversary book 15 years ago.

RE: Architecture website gets a new look B_News no. 4 contained an article entitled ‘Why can’t we just have a decent website’.

In response to this article we briefly explain changes planned for TU Delft’s website.

The´restructuring of TU Delft’s websites’ is well underway. On 4 November 2008 the new TU Delft homepage was launched. On 2 February the homepages of the faculties will follow and on 26 February (in the evening) the deeper pages will appear in the new layout.

The focus of the development of the new website was on the user. Extensive research was done on how users search for information on the website. The results of the user study determined the structure and layout of the website.

The new structure and layout of the web-

site clearly distinguish between external and internal visitors. Information for current students and staff is available on the student and staff portals. At the top of the TU Delft homepage there are links to these portals.

These links will also appear on the homepages of the faculties.

The launch of the new website coincided with the bringing into use of TU Delft’s optimized search engine.

It is now possible to search either for staff or subjects.

It has also become possible to search exclusively at the level of one faculty.

announcement The theme and contest of indesem ‘09 have been launched! The main theme of indesem ‘09 is the role of architects in sensory perception of the user. The week from the 7th until 15th of May 2009, the whole faculty of architecture will be dominated by the event of indesem ‘09.

THE ASSIGNMENT We feel that we have lost the grip on how our architecture is experienced by the users.

Indesem ’09 wants to create awareness of perception in architecture, and to centralize the user again in the design process. We’ll look beyond the borders of the conceptual design in our profession, and see how other disciplines - such as art, psychology and literature - deal with perception.

To participate, please take a look at the assignment below and make sure you hand in your entry before the 20th of February.

The 80 students will be selected out of the contest entries. Check our website and we hope to see you at indesem, 7-15 May 2009!

Redesign a public set of stairs found in your own environment, with the main focus on the experience for each user of these stairs. Motivate, in both words and images, why you think these stairs need a redesign. Keep the overall sensory experience in mind while designing, as well as the influence of context, proportion and materialization. The jury will make her decision on base of the value of experience for the user of the stairs, critical and analytical view of the participant on his or her surroundings, understanding of human scale, inventiveness in design, and visualization of non-visual aspects on human perception.

Streets of BK City:COLOURS? With the semester ending, and everyone being so busy, I was amazed that people found time to answer THE question: What do you think of the colours of BK City?

There are a lot of different colours they combined here. And then I have to think about the floors and the beautiful roof. What I especially like is the tiles, and the way that you can never find the exact brown-gray colour, so they use purple tiles to fill the gaps. That’s cool. Sometimes, they can get carried away though, like with the primary school/crèche colours of the windows on the second floor.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who dislikes it.

Veel van de input wist ik al, de workshop was breed opgezet. Toch was er die ene gouden tip.

Een tip over hoe je de rij bij de printer kunt omzeilen maar daar wil ik niet verder over uitweiden!

Ook vond ik het aardig om collega’s te zien. Al met al was het twee uur investeren waard.”

Dr.ir. Peter Wigmans (Real Estate) “Prima workshop! Als senior heb ik vaak grote moeite om de ontwikkelingen op ICT bij te houden.

Het gaat vaak te snel voor mijn generatie. Ik heb zeker een paar dingen opgestoken. En de workshop werd goed gegeven.”

Anita van Haren (Publicatiebureau) “Groot gedeelte wist ik al. Waar ik wel veel aan had was het werken met de takenlijst. Groot voordeel daarvan is om een overzicht te krijgen van je werkzaamheden per dag. Handig, alvast in het verlengde van het tijdschrijven.

Eigenlijk een cursus die iedereen zou moeten doen, ook al werk je dagelijks met Outlook.”

Madeleine Morree (Onderwijs- & Studentenservices) “Ik heb er een hoop praktische dingen uitgehaald. Vooral handig vond ik het verhaal over archiveren, hoe je je opslagcapaciteit kunt vergroten. En hoe je eenvoudig kleur in je agenda kunt gebruiken opdat anderen een beter inzicht hebben in je agenda.”

Mick de Witte (Marketing & Communicatie) “Het werken met de takenlijst is echt een verrijking, ik wist er niet vanaf en ben toch al zo’n 6 jaar gebruiker van Outlook. De dame die de workshop gaf is duidelijk en toonde ingangen in het programma die ik nooit heb geweten. Het heeft mijn interesse in Outlook opgewekt, het is een verrassend veelzijdig programma.”

De workshop wordt op 9 en 12 februari opnieuw gegeven. Je kunt je nog opgeven. Aanmelden bij Karen Postma (k.e.postma@tudelft.nl). Max aantal deelnemers is 14 personen per workshop.

Tip: Neem je laptop mee!

Ieder mens krijgt met de dood te maken, al was het maar die van hem zelf. Op welke leeftijd dat voor het eerst gebeurt en in welke vorm varieert enorm. Maar zo’n ervaring, vooral die eerste, heeft vaak ingrijpende gevolgen voor iemands bestaan. Het ergste dat je kan overkomen is om ten onrechte het gevoel krijgen dat de dood van een ander, meestal iemand die je na staat, jouw schuld is. Freud schreef daar indrukwekkend over – donkere melancholie is het gevolg, de Trauerarbeit die ermee gepaard gaat iets verschrikkelijks. Zo kun je levenslang de slaaf van andermans dood worden, en daarna van jezelf.

Mijn eerste dood was een verschrikkelijke dood. Ik schrijf uitdrukkelijk ‘mijn eerste dood’ – want met deze vrouw stierf ook ik een beetje. Sindsdien geloof ik als doorgewinterde atheïst in wederopstanding. Ik althans was er weer – in welke hoedanigheid is een tweede.

In Groningen woonden we aan een brede straat. Nooit heb ik begrepen, toen ik die later als volwassene terugzag, waarom hij toch zo enorm ruim was. Autoverkeer was er, toen ik klein was, nauwelijks. De maandelijkse komst van mijn Pake in zijn meest recente Ford trok veel bekijks. Hij was niet voor niets ‘Ford-dealer voor heel Friesland’. De rest van de tijd was het gewoon een stenen voetbalveld of een tiepelperk. Het risico dat een bal of zo’n tiepelhoutje door een ruit ging, was door de omvang van de vlakte beperkt.

Aan onze straatkant stond een rij negentiende-eeuwse huizen, sommige deel van een serie, anderen uniek. Aan de kant van de Westersingel, waar het verkeer ook toen al drukker was, was onze straat het breedst; aan de andere kant eindigde ze in een trechter. Het gaf samen een besloten gevoel. Direct aan de overkant stond een groter gebouw – niet hoger, wel groter. Daarin ging ik voor het eerst in mijn leven naar school – een Fröbelschool. Een bijzonderheid van het gebouw was, dat uit één van de lokalen de houten vloer was gelicht en er zo binnenshuis een enorme zandbak was ontstaan.

Ardavan Khorsand, MSc 3 Interior The building is some kind of an active building, and I like the colours of the floor, especially in the Bachelors’ area. My problem is these tiles, the kind of brownish colour, I think it’s not going right with the feel of the faculty. As you know, we have presentations and we need lots of white walls to put posters on, but I like the floor and the exposed ceiling, the exposed materials.

Na enkele weken groot plezier kreeg ik opeens te horen dat ik “vandaag niet naar school kon.” Het was een gewone doordeweekse dag. Mijn Fröbeljuf was gestorven - een jong ding, van een pracht waardoor ik nu nog posthuum jaloers ben op mijn eigen jonge Ik. Zonder te weten wat dit inhield was ik smoorverliefd op haar geweest.

Nu nog weet ik niet waaraan ze stierf.

Wel ben ik even zeker als die kleine vierjarige, dat ze aan de overkant van mijn huis doodging. Die enorm brede Verlengde Visserstraat kreeg de allure van een Canyon. Alle resterende Groninger jaren – tot mijn verhuizing naar Leiden op mijn zevende – voetbalde en tiepelde ik slechts op onze helft van die nu eindeloos groot geworden stenen prairie. Wel ging ik elke morgen aan de overkant trillend naar school, zonder mijn ouders ooit duidelijk te kunnen maken wat het was dat me deed trillen.

When the colours outside become a reality, it will be really nice, now it’s a bit strange, I saw a lot of people signing the list to have the colours changed back. Inside I like the colour of the carpet, how it connects and shows the relationship between the rooms. I don’t like the ceilings, I think they’re kind of ugly, but perhaps they want to make a comparison.

Soms vrees ik een leven lang met Trauerarbeit bezig geweest te zijn, een vierentwintiguurs-baan die me tenslotte deed belanden achter deze typemachine voor het schrijven van dit stukje.

On the print Picture Exhibition by the brilliant Dutch artist M.C. Escher, a young man can be seen studying a picture in a gallery in Malta, where, paradoxically, he himself is depicted looking at the picture.

Much is known about the methods that Escher used to manufacture the print.

Less known is the fact that the print contains a so-called Droste effect, an infinite repetition in visual art. This becomes apparent when analyzing Escher’s drafts mathematically. However, in the centre of the picture we find a blank spot that even the artist himself was not able to fill. Using advanced mathematical methods, the puzzle has now been solved! A stunning lecture with an exciting conclusion.
