We hope you’ve had a wonderful summer and enjoyed the glorious weather, it’s particularly quiet in the office as I write this month’s editor letter everyone’s gone on holiday! It’s ‘back to school’ time now, we hope you’re all ready to go. Steyning Grammar has a new uniform - it looks so smart, but I wonder how it’s been received by the pupils! It might take some getting used to... Our cover image is of Neil Laughton, local adventurer and entrepreneur. I caught up with Neil between his expeditions to find out about his Flying for Heroes project, see page 26 for details. His ‘can do’ attitude, and that of the injured soldiers, is inspiring. I hope you enjoy reading all about it. Thank you for all the comments we received about our August ‘take over’ issue by St Peter’s School. onna Knight and Alison Pink are celebrating two years at the helm of Pinks hairdressing salon in Henfield! With a 20 year friendship and nearly 40 years hairdressing experience between them, Donna and Alison took over the business as a partnership at the beginning of September 2012. Since then they have been putting their own personal stamp on the business in subtle ways and their customers love it! So what’s the secret of their success? Well the customer service at Pinks is second to none – all their staff are genuinely welcoming and all clients are treated with the same friendly yet professional manner, whether they have just walked through the door for the first time, or whether they are longstanding clients. The décor is very sleek and simple, but at the same time relaxed – it’s most definitely not your typical village salon! And they always have a comprehensive choice of L’Oreal products in stock, in addition to a large range of GHD hairdryers, brushes and straighteners – perfect for not only topping up your own stocks, but also as lovely gifts for friends. And not forgetting the stylists of course! In addition to Donna and Alison, Pinks has a loyal team of talented stylists of varying experience so there is always a stylist to suit your budget. All stylists attend regular training courses to keep their skills up to date and there are plenty of opportunities for them to grow and develop within the salon: Gracie who started as a Saturday girl is now an advanced apprentice and Olivia recently won second prize in the Sussex Avant Gard Hair Up competition. Donna and Alison are always looking to keep things fresh and current in the salon and they are quick to pick up new trends. The KeraStraight treatment is a great example of a treatment which started off as a luxury treatment but has become more main-stream within the salon. Customers love the way the advanced protein treatments leave their hair feeling healthy, shiny and soft for up to four months. They have also started to offer ‘blow dry lessons’ where they will teach you the tricks of the trade to enable you to blow dry your own hair professionally. Including two styling products to take away, the blow dry lessons are a snip at £35! Even with all their business and family commitments, Donna and Alison found time earlier in the year to complete the Race for Life with the rest of the Pinks team.

Altogether they raised nearly £1,000 for Cancer Research UK – an incredible amount of money for a small business. Pinks also have strong local community links and they donate numerous raffle prizes to local charity and school fundraising events in Henfield and the surrounding areas.
Donna and Alison quite clearly love what they do and they have some exciting plans up their sleeves for the future, although for the time being these are staying under wraps. “The last two years has flown by, but we have really enjoyed it!” laughed Donna. “And best of all,” added Alison with a smile, “we are still the best of friends!”

PHB shares a 2014 Sussex Heritage Award success for their works at Wakehurst Place for Kew Gardens.

HENFIELD SCOUT HUT FUNDRAISING NEWS In July the Henfield Scouts received a massive boost towards their fundraising target of £130,000 to build a new scout hut - a cheque for more than £4,000 from Henfield Gardens and Arts. Nick Cryer, treasurer of Gardens and Arts said: “We are delighted to support this very worthwhile project for the village.” Mike Morgan, Scout Hut fund treasurer, said: “This was an outstanding contribution to our funds, which now stand at over £25,000. On behalf of the Building Appeal we wish to thank all those who opened their gardens, arranged music events or had special displays during the Festival Gardens and Arts weekend and donated their collections to the new Scout Centre. Thanks must also go to the organisers of the event for nominating us as their chosen charity which raised a fantastic sum of £4,600. We also wish to thank Brass Fusion and Sidonie Winter for donating £125 which they
Dark Star’s Hopfest is back this year and set to be bigger and better than ever. After attracting record numbers of visitors (over 2,000) last year, Hopfest has become a traditional meet-up event for beer fans across the region, who to flock to the brewery to enjoy the music, food and of course a beer or two. As usual visitors can expect free beer tasting sessions across a wide range of Dark Star beers along with a hop exhibition, street art displays and live music from a number of great local bands. And as per tradition, Morris Dancers will entertain including the mysteriously gothic Mythago Morris Men - a display not to be missed!
James Cuthbertson of Dark Star said: “We’re all really looking forward to hosting Hopfest again this year. We were blown away by the number of visitors last year and if early interest is anything to go by, we can look forward to a great turn-out. There’ll be lots to see, do, and of course taste – it’s set to be a fantastic weekend.” Celebrations will kick-off on Friday 26 September at 7.30pm at The Partridge pub when the season’s first barrels of Dark Star Green Hop IPA (a beer brewed using fresh hops from this year’s harvest) will be tapped. A mass of events will follow over the weekend September of 27 to 28 at the brewery including: live music from a number of local bands; beer tastings; Morris Dancing; artwork created throughout the day; local food and craft stalls; and much more!

HART CLIMBERS CELEBRATE RAISING £4,800 Last month we reported that the team of seven from HART (Henfield Area Response Team) who climbed the three Peaks (Ben Nevis, Scarfell Pike and Snowdon) within 24 hours back in June had raised £2,000. LEGAL CHALLENGE TO BARRATT’S DEVELOPMENT At the Hands Off Henfield AGM in July we announced that we believed Horsham District Council was planning a Legal challenge to the Appeal decision in favour of Barratts development in West End Lane. We have received the following confirmation from HDC. “We have indeed submitted a s.288 challenge against the Inspector’s decision, and this was lodged at the Court of Justice last Monday afternoon (14 July). The grounds of the challenge are on the basis of the Inspector failing to have regard to the views out of the site in terms of the design of the development, thereby failing to take the opportunity to improve the character of the area (paragraph 64 of the NPPF).” This means that the court will review the Planning Inspectorates decision following the appeal to allow the development to go ahead. As a result there is still a chance of the Appeal decision being overturned. Hands Off Henfield

News | SEPTEMBER 2014 the one mile event, aimed at juniors. Our oldest competitor was 85 years ‘young’, while the youngest was “some bit younger” at just four years old! First home in the four mile race was Alan Silvester of Arena 80 AC, in 24:10 - a blistering pace on a hot day that forced us to put a drinks station in at just two miles! The first woman was Lara Barazzuol of Lewes AC in 27:01. In the one mile race the winner was Rupert Guiel of Arunners, in 5:25 with first lady being Katie Ridley of Worthing Harriers in 6:40. We may not have had full sun as the skies above Henfield had a lot of cloud, but my goodness it was a warm and humid day on Sunday 27 July! The annual Seven Stiles run (this year kindly sponsored by Alex Coles of Coles Automotive www.colesautomotive. co.uk) is organised by Henfield Joggers as part of the West Sussex Fun Run League, with Clubs from all over Sussex competing. The event is also open to anyone - one competitor was even from the Czech Republic (although currently working over here)! Nearly 400 runners competed in the four mile event, which led people on a course that went down to the River Adur along the bank and back to Henfield Leisure Centre. More than 50 younger runners competed in
The Hurstpierpoint Singers are recommencing rehearsals, under the direction of Paul Simpson, on Monday 8 September 8 in the Methodist Church on Cuckfield Road in Hurstpierpoint at 7.30pm. The sun shone and children flocked to the play park adjacent to the Kings Field in Henfield for the ‘grand opening’ of the newly renovated play area on 25 July. Abby Furber cut the ribbon, assisted by Henfield Parish Council Chairman Ray Osgood and Parish Councillor Digby Stephenson. The new equipment, which cost in the region of £43k, includes climbing frames, tunnels, see-saws and slides as well as safety surfaces with fencing with safety gate. It has been mainly funded by a Section 106 planning contribution from Charles Church, developers of the phase 2 Parsonage Estate. The balance has been met by the Parish Council precept. The original play area was installed in 2000 as the village millennium project and it will continue to be cared for and main-

Mary Jones and family will once again be hosting a day of coffee and cakes in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Last year, four generations of the family baked a wonderful array of treats and managed to raise over £1500 for this very worthy cause. This year, the event will be held on Saturday 6 September at Sunnybank, West End Lane, Henfield, BN5 9RF. Coffee, cakes and cream teas will be served in the garden from 10am-12pm and then from 2pm-4pm. There will also be delicious cakes available to buy, along with a raffle, tombola and other competitions to help boost donations.
IN MEMORY OF PAMELA GRACE KELLY - 1930-2014 Pam, a mother to Andrea, Julie and Robert and grandmother to seven grandchildren, came to Henfield with her husband Terry in 1973. Their love of playing the addictive game of competitive bridge soon brought them into contact with like-minded local players. Their combined efforts brought about the establishment of the very first bridge Club in Henfield - the Henfield Duplicate Bridge Society. With her skills, both as a bridge player and an administrator (she was a former branch manager of a Building Society), Pam was elected to the Congress Society, a post she held with enormous success for 25 years. Each year the Henfield Club held a bridge playing tournament and during the many years Pam held office, the number of teams competing increased year by year. In her final, year of office well over 60 teams were playing competitive duplicate bridge! Pam was a popular and highly respected member of the bridge-playing community both here in Henfield and throughout Sussex. Pam’s Requiem funeral held at Corpus Christi on Thursday 10 July reflected the high regard for her when over 120 mourners came to the service including a former Chairman of the English Bridge Union. KINDERSLEY CHARITABLE NWSS DONATE TO MOCKTAIL TRUST As many readers will know, the Kindersley Trust APPRENTICE Horsham-based Brighton & Hove Albion supporters club, North West Sussex Seagulls (NWSS) have donated £250 to Mocktail Apprentice. The Horsham District based ‘Mocktail Apprentice’ is an interactive and innovative project delivered by Horsham Matters that empowers young people to explore safe and responsible alternatives to alcohol, whilst developing key employability skills. This in turn creates a healthier

Last year, grants totalling £1,830 were made to: Friends of Henfield Medical Practice Trust as a contribution to the cost of purchase of an otoscope (£700); to Busy Bee Play Group for the renewal of a play kitchen (£130); and to Henfield Leisure Centre towards the purchase of equipment for use in the GP referral Scheme and in children’s activities (£1,000). The Committee does not make grants towards running expenses but will be happy to consider applications from charities, societies or organisations for assistance towards specific projects or needs. This year’s meeting will once more be in early December. For our annual outing this year we went to Eastbourne. After meeting up at the Henfield Hall we were served tea or coffee before boarding the coach. The sun was shining and it was a lovely journey, arriving just in time for our fish and chip lunch at the Harry Ramsden Restaurant. After lunch we all made our way for a walk along the sea front. Wheelchairs were provided for those having difficulty walking – pushed by our band of volunteer helpers (what would we do without them?). All the arrangements were made by Mo Michie and Maureen Dexter for which we all thank them very much. After an ice cream on the pier we made our way home. Judging by the sight of all the smiling faces I think everyone enjoyed the day. As one member was heard to say; “roll on next year!” The Henfield Self Help Group now has some spaces for new members. Crowds gathered at Henfield War Memorial on Monday 4 August for the ‘Lights Out’ ceremony to remember the centenary of the outbreak of World War One. Around 200, many carrying candles, arrived at the memorial following a church service at St Peters. Veterans of the Second World War led the tributes and laid a wreath of poppies at the memorial outside Henfield Club, which was originally founded as the Comrades Club at the end of WW1. A moving silence followed bugler Tim Radmall’s playing of Last Post as the candles were put out. Former Royal Navy Lt. Even if you feel healthy, you should have the free flu vaccination if you are pregnant or have a serious health condition (for example if you have a heart problem, a chest complaint or breathing difficulties; lowered immunity due to disease or treatment; liver disease; had a stroke or a transient ischaemic attack (TIA); diabetes; a neurological condition; a problem with your spleen). You should also consider having the vaccination is you are: aged 65 years or over; live in a residential or nursing home; the main carer of an older or disabled person; or live in a household contact of an immunecompromised person. The walk-in flu clinics are being held on Tuesday from 2-4pm and on Wednesday from 4-6pm from 7 October. This year flu immunisation is also being offered to children aged between two and four years old by appointment at the surgery. We are also offering the routine shingles vaccination for those residents born between 2 September 1943 and 1 September 1944, as well as a catch-up programme for residents born between 2 September 1934 and 1 September 1936. The shingles vaccination is offered with flu immunisation by appointment between 29 September - 3 October. Finally, we are offering the Meningitis C vaccination for students aged between 17-25 years old who are attending university for further education for the first time by appointment at the surgery. PETER JAMES BACKS HENFIELD AUCTION OF SIR CLIFF RICHARD’S STAGE WAISTCOAT LEISURE CENTRE APPEAL Crime thriller writer Peter James is backing Henfield Leisure Centre’s plan to build a new soft play area costing £350,000 - and he has already made donations from book signings. The author, who is famous for the Roy Grace detective novels set in Brighton, lives in the area and believes the extension to the leisure centre will provide a vital facility for youngsters. Eric Holder, Leisure Centre Chairman, said: “We are delighted that Peter is to be a leading supporter of our appeal. He has been very generous with his time and money and we are extremely grateful.” The soft play extension will be a bespoke multi-tiered activity area for children aged 2-12 years old, with slides, climbing areas, scramble nets, ball pit, and obstacles to squeeze through which will enable children to play in a secure environment. “It will be a confidence builder for them and allow mums, dads and carers to enjoy a cup of coffee knowing their children are safe,” continued Eric. “The facility will be available to just turn up and play and will be available to hire for children’s parties.” Donations to the appeal can be given to the Leisure Centre, Northcroft, Henfield, BN5 9QB. The waistcoat comes with signed authentication from Sir Cliff Richard himself. HENFIELD PARISH COUNCIL At its last meeting Henfield Parish Council was delighted to receive a short presentation from Andrea Agarwal who runs a diving business on a small island in the Philippines which was devastated by a massive typhoon last November. Henfield Community donated £2,500 to an appeal launched by her father, Parish Councillor Arun Agarwal and this money was used to fund the re-building of 15 of Andrea’s employees family homes destroyed by the storm.

News | SEPTEMBER 2014 At the meeting Council also welcomed Tony Duggan as a new Member on his co-option to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Miah Babel earlier in the year. All Henfield residents are reminded that the present Parish Council runs until May 2015 when there will be an election for a new Council. If joining Council as an elected Member is something you may consider, all Council meetings are open to the public and you would be advised to come and watch a meeting in action. FIGHT TO SAVE DAY CENTRE Henfield Day Centre is a precious resource for the village, providing support to older people in need and respite for their carers and families. With an ageing population it is likely to become even more important in the future. Yet it is under threat of closure as West Sussex County Council makes cuts to balance its budget. A team of local volunteers from the Henfield Community Partnership is now fighting to keep the centre open by finding alternative care providers and sources of funding. Over the last month they have been talking to as many care organisations and other potential users as possible. A spokesperson said “Fortunately, there has been a great deal of interest and we are optimistic that a solution can be found. There is no doubt that the Day Centre building is underutilised at the moment. It might be possible to provide a much wider range of services to benefit the local community. The team has until September to develop its proposal. We will report on progress in the October BN5 and via the Henfield Hub. Steve Bailey
A six-piece band blasted forth with Good Morning Baltimore and all 150+ performers came on seamlessly from all directions, waving and greeting the audience –a great way to get the atmosphere going and greet their public. To share the afternoon performance they invited The Sussex Harmonisers Barbershop Chorus, local choir Kaleidoscope Singers and the icing on the cake, soloist Stella Luczkowski who brought her professionalism, charisma and fantastic voice to light the stage! Their birthday celebrations came to a climax with a party at Wiston House in Steyning. The weather was perfect so our champagne cocktails could be taken out into the grounds. A slideshow of DVD’s and photos from their last 10 years was shown, a buffet, live music from the fabulous Jazz Canons, a presentation to their conductor Zoe Peate and dancing brought the celebrations to an unforgettable climax. Words alone cannot express the wonderful atmosphere, joy and fun we had. Here’s to the next 10 years. Zoe Peate

CANTATRICE CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF SINGING IN STYLE! The 150 strong ladies choir Cantatrice based in Steyning and Horsham and conducted by Zoe Peate celebrated not once, but twice in style. On Sunday 20 July they performed their first ever show ‘Putting on the Glitz’ and that’s exactly what they did. Gone were the statement bright turquoise drape cardigans and on were the glamour ball gowns and dresses making a stunning first impact on a capacity audience at The Drama Hall, Steyning Grammar School.

We are at the Henfield Hall every Wednesday at 7.30pm for an hour and a half of song and laughter (cost £7.) We sing songs in a variety of styles from many cultures as well as our own and there is no need to read music as everything is taught by ear. Young voices and male voices are particularly welcome. HENFIELD VOICES DEBUT On Sunday June 15th Henfield came alive to the sound of African music! A group of singers from Henfield Voices contributed to the Open Gardens and Arts festivities with a colourful and joyful set of African songs and chants. Neil Laughton - Ordinary Heroes
T
he life of an adventurer is never dull. Neil Laughton’s email footer reads ‘Trainer. Explorer. Speaker.’ So I know the next hour is likely to be fun – an interview with this local entrepreneur and ex-SAS soldier, who has enough stories to fill three issues of BN5 not just the 800 words I’m looking for. Neil is the Expedition Leader for a Flying for Heroes challenge in September (see our front cover) which will test the endurance and fortitude of eight exmilitary servicemen as they fly 1,000km across Kenya on Paratrikes. At the beginning of August, as I write this, the MOD have just given the team official clearance for the trip, the good news arrives as the recruits return home from a three week training camp in north-east Spain. Neil’s penchant for the unusual and challenging may be a product of his early career as an SAS Troop Commander. He later ventured into the business world with the successful creation of a property development and construction company, which he sold to Balfour Beatty in 2010, allowing him to devote his time to expeditions, adventures and fundraising. He lives in Small Dole with his wife, Caroline, who runs a successful catering company, and their three young children. Neil values living in such a lovely part of the world, which is why he chose to build a house here, on a beautiful spot with views across the downs to Chanctonbury Ring. Neil’s achievements are fascinating and seem endless. He has organized and led expeditions all over the world,

scaling the Seven Summits and taking his friend Bear Grylls up Everest on one of his first expeditions back in 1998. He’s climbed Everest several times and has had some challenging experiences – getting caught in a storm that tragically killed 8 climbers half way up Everest was one he’d prefer not to repeat. He’s got an eye for the unusual and humorous, especially when it raises money for good causes – the Great Sussex Bath Race was his ‘baby’, now in it’s 3rd year and having raised £35k for hospices and charities so far. He’s played golf at the North Pole (with an orange ball) and jet-skii’d around the UK with Bear. He owns the world’s first road legal Flying Car, which he drove and flew 10,000 miles from London to Timbuktu. As Neil starts to talk about Flying for Heroes it’s easy to understand why he’s such a successful motivational speaker. He’s quietly enthusiastic with a confidence that is contagious; anything seems (and is) possible when met with this attitude. His approach to the wounded, injured and sick soldiers respects and values their past training and experience, he appreciates that because they have suffered the traumas of war this is no reason to treat them any differently. The physical differences can be overcome; the paratrikes are specially adapted for those that are missing limbs or have reduced mobility. They need to train and achieve their licenses just like all the other able bodied pilots, there are serious navigational exams to pass before they take to the skies. Most importantly, being part of a ‘band of brothers’

embarking on a seemingly impossible challenge like the Kenya paratrike, takes these men back to their time in the services and gives them the adrenaline kick which is missing from their civilian lives. Neil explained; “Many of the team are PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) sufferers and this ‘esprit de corps’ is a great healer. We had 50 applications for the expedition, seven made it through – we don’t make allowances for disability and the achievements of every member of this team will be the same as those of an able-bodied soldier. It’s a great leveler that the adapted trikes don’t leave the limbless at a disadvantage, they can enjoy the same sense of freedom.” The challenge starts at Mount Kilimanjaro on the border with Tanzania in September. The team will make their epic 1,000km journey in three weeks to Mount Kenya in the north. They will fly up the Rift Valley, experiencing some spectacular views of jungle, rivers and mountains. It’s a beautiful but dangerous landscape, they will be sleeping in the bush and making good use of their army survival training, and although the team are shadowed on the ground by the Land Rover support vehicles, they are very much alone when faced with the elements in the skies. It’s inspiring to read the stories of the men in the team

on the Flying for Heroes website. One of them, Edward Stroud, sums up the importance of expeditions like this. “Flying for Heroes has been the first really positive thing to happen to me over recent years. Not only has it given me focus and something to look forward to but it was a ‘hand up’ out of the situation. This is what Flying for Heroes is doing, showing people like me, at a time I needed a hand, that there is actually something out there that I can achieve…” The expedition is being filmed for a TV documentary to help raise awareness of the challenges our injured servicemen and women face. Neil hopes this will be the start of many expeditions for F4H, as well as the start of flying for many of the team. “Flying is my first love and to see these guys embracing the freedom of the skies is just incredible. It’s also a foot on the ladder for them to work as flying instructors, with the ability to enthuse others to participate in this great sport.”

Chatterbox celebrates eight happy years!
C
hatterbox must be one of the most appropriately named groups in the village. A group of happy preschoolers busy exploring one activity then another; playing with their friends and the Chatterbox leaders; socializing and learning some important growing-up skills. When I visit in August there are even more children than usual - it’s the school holidays and the siblings are welcomed back to join in the fun.
Chatterbox began in September 2006, set up by a group of Evangelical Church goers as an outreach group for younger members of the community. Anne Bland, Bob and Val Burley, Anne Simpson and Rosemary Farnham set about finding toys and activities for the children to do, with help from Pastor Rob Harris. Before they knew it the group was a reality – meeting every Tuesday from 9.30-11.30am at the sunny little hall behind the Evangelical Church. The groups’ hard work has paid dividends. Chatterbox now welcomes around 25 children each week. Mums, dads and carers can enjoy a cup of tea and a chat while their little ones take part in a craft or activity, a puzzle or maybe a drink and a snack. Babies have their own little area with soft toys and mats to play on. The lovely new sunshine yellow furniture has brightened the room and the recently decorated hall looks cheerful and welcoming. also join in Sunday School at the church; but there is no obligation to do so and all families are warmly welcomed, the emphasis is strongly on community. Olwen Denman looks after the day-to-day running of the group. Well known to many ‘littlies’ in the village and a grandma herself, she has a huge amount of experience through working with children most of her career. “Our team work together to stimulate the children through play, getting them ready to move on to playgroup or school,” said Olwen. “They learn to share and broaden their friendships, learn motorskills and produce wonderful pictures. Picasso has nothing on the art our little ones produce!” Chatterbox also provides a valuable breathing space for parents, a support group and some good advice from those who’ve ‘done it before’. After all, parenting doesn’t come with a handbook! The Chatterbox ethos of ‘showing love and a sense of happiness to all through faith’ stands strong. If you’ve got a pre-schooler they’d love to see you on a Tuesday morning.

clubs in the surrounding villages. These are mainly on winter Sunday afternoons. We don’t play in any really competitive leagues, so all of our games are amongst friends. There is no dress code so there is no expensive kit to buy, although you must bring smooth flat soled shoes to change into. It is very important not to get grit or even mud on to the mats - that is the only rule to worry about to begin with. So come and give it a try. On Friday morning come by 9.45 am (with your flat shoes) so we can meet you and get you into a game which starts at 10am. At 11am you get coffee or tea and biscuits, all included for £2.50 a morning. This is a really good way to spend a Friday morning. The players are sorted out into teams of two, three or four depending on the number of players who turn up. The play is just like you’ve seen on the grass outdoors or on the bright blue carpet on the television. Play is very friendly and not really competitive even though your team is trying hard to win the morning. We do have some competitions with annual trophies of course, but there’s no compulsion to enter these. Also we have several friendly matches with other

This is an indoor version of the game that is played on a bowling green in the summer or in very large specially built club facilities. These tend to be rather expensive and perhaps a bit intimidating. Out game is not: it’s fun, friendly and not expensive. The mats are special, very smooth carpets that are rolled out in a large hall and are marked with lines that indicate the playing area. The bowls are the same as those used outdoors (if you have a set of your own bring them along). The rules are generally the same as outdoors, with even a notional ditch at each end. It’s just as enjoyable as the full-sized game and of course you don’t have to worry about the rain!

Don’t bite the hand that fixes you! I recently had the privilege of being interviewed by some of the pupils at St Peters School in Henfield. Some very thoughtful and insightful questions were asked which did put me on the spot somewhat! There is one question which I am often asked once people know my profession: what’s the worst bite that you have ever had? The posing of this query is normally followed by a look of slightly sadistic expectation in the hope of a story of pain, blood, hospital visits, lost limbs and general mayhem. My own answer to this question is somewhat disappointing in terms of the above criteria, although there was certainly pain and a significant amount of blood involved. The perpetrator was a young moggy who managed to turn and sink his teeth into my exposed wrist, nicking a blood vessel in the process. A little blood does go a long way, but the scene afterwards resembled something from a horror movie. I did get my own back on the cat in question by completing the castration procedure that he was in for later on!
Veterinary surgeons often find ourselves in situations where, to put it democratically, we have to deal with a pet who does not want to be dealt with. Some of these situations can be challenging, so I thought it might be interesting to give you some example scenarios. The first timer: In order for an owner or a veterinary surgeon to know that a particular pet might consider using his or her teeth for something other than smiling, it has to attempt to, (or succeed) in biting someone. Unfortunately this is often at the veterinary surgery where a pet finds themselves in a new environment with a complete stranger poking around with them, opening their mouths and generally encroaching on their personal space. It’s not surprising that some pets take exception to this. From the veterinary surgeons perspective, the old adage of ‘once bitten twice shy’ definitely applies and so with every pet we have to make a judgement on whether their posture or body language of the pet indicates that they may be inclined to bite or scratch. Sometimes we get caught out with a bit of a nip and there have also been times when I have felt incredibly stupid as I perform a ‘speedy hand withdrawal’ out of reach of a pet, only to find that the patient was just turning to give me a friendly lick! Most pets do give some warning if they are considering an act of minor violence, but there are a few who keep it under their hats - which brings me to the next category… The unpredictable: Hopefully another vet has already taken one for the team and there is prior knowledge that the individual in question has ‘form’. The unpredictable first timer is normally a successful unpredictable first timer! These pets normally sit calmly, weighing up their options until they come to the snap decision that enough is enough. There is normally

no warning growl or grumble – the most you may be lucky enough to get is a certain look in the eye. Being on high alert with a known ‘unpredictable’ has often led me to many an unnecessary ‘speedy hand withdrawal’… The blissfully unaware: The other main factor which influences a veterinary surgeon’s comfort level when faced with a potentially grumpy pet is how confident we are with the person who is restraining it. Some well meaning owners come breezing into the consulting room holding the very tip of their dog’s lead between thumb and forefinger, then stand back with one hand on their hip at a jaunty angle and expect the vet to crack on with the examination. One does feel vulnerable examining the hind limb of a painful lame dog when no one is holding its head! It’s easy to forget that while a pet may not show any signs of aggression at home, pain, illness, discomfort or even just being in a strange place can easily precipitate this. The in-denial: Quite frequently we are presented with a pet which is doing its’ very best to warn in no uncertain terms – “do not touch me, if you do, I will try and bite you!” Despite this, some owners are often to be heard saying words to the effect of: “There’s no need to muzzle him, I’m sure he’ll be fine,” or: “She just makes a lot of noise, but she’s never bitten anyone before.” As the person going into the potential danger zone I hope you’ll appreciate that it’s much better to be safe than sorry. Putting a muzzle on a pet isn’t a personal insult it just ensures our safety and gives us the confidence to undertake a more thorough examination. The overprotective: Every now and then we come across the lovely client who goes the complete opposite and insists on muzzling their 17 year old toothless, blind cat “just in case.” While I am very touched by their concern for my safety, there is the rare situation where I’ll say, “I’m sure there’s no need for that today” – this is probably followed by me sustaining an injury, as you should always take a pet owner’s word for it!
So, if your pet does have a tendency to be on the illtempered side when he or she is at the veterinary surgery, please do not feel uncomfortable. It is not a slight on their home environment or training and the vast majority are no problem when they are back in their comfort zone. However, if you know that your pet is that way inclined, we would always appreciate prior warning and please do not take offence if a muzzle or similar is suggested – to be on the safe side! our business accounts reflect the financial performance of your enterprise. They are a valuable management tool in deciding strategy and setting budgetary targets. If you are baffled by the figures and all the jargon, the following explanations may help clear the fog!

Balance Sheet - Rather like a snapshot picture, the Balance Sheet shows the net worth of the business at a particular date (the BSD) and it comprises fixed and current assets less its liabilities. Tangible Fixed Assets - These are assets which have a relatively long life (more than one year) and are relatively fixed (in size, shape or form); they are permanent in nature and used by the business in its operation. Examples include: freehold/leasehold land and buildings, furniture, fixtures, fittings and equipment (inc. computers), and motor vehicles. These assets are generally relatively expensive and will be used over long periods of time. As the life of these assets extends over many accounting periods, it is necessary for your accountant to allocate the cost of the asset to current and future operations on some rational basis. This allocation is called ‘Providing for Depreciation’ and within the Profit and Loss Account, an element of depreciation will be charged. Fixed assets are usually shown at original cost less accumulated depreciation, equalling Net Book Value. Current Assets - Current assets include cash and any kind of asset that can be turned into cash or consumed reasonably soon. They comprise stock, debtors (customers owing monies for goods or services rendered), prepayments (for example insurance premiums or rentals paid during the current period; although the benefit, or service provided, extends into the following accounting period), and cash at bank and in hand. Creditors: Amounts falling due within one year - These are liabilities or debts owing at the year-end that will be paid within one year (for example suppliers’ bills). Included under this description would be salaries and wages earned by employees as at the year-end but not yet paid, and accruals for items yet to be invoiced (for example, accountancy fees for preparing the year’s financial statements). Capital Accounts (Partnerships only) - Partners’ Capital Accounts reflects the amount of money paid into the business by the Partners, usually in accordance with the Partnership Agreement. This is usually fixed and rarely varies. Current Accounts (Partnerships only) - Partners’ Current Accounts reflect each Partner’s ‘pot’ – containing the Partner’s profit share less drawings taken during the year. The resultant (positive) balance is the amount due to each Partner at the Balance Sheet Date. Liquidity - Finances are said to be ‘liquid’ when current debts (due to be paid within one year) can be covered by current assets. If current debts exceed current assets, and the business cannot pay its bills when requested, the business has liquidity problems. This may be caused by poor cash flow management, salaries/drawings too high to be sustainable, or the purchase of a costly fixed asset, such as a building or equipment. Paul Samrah
Accounting Reference Date or Balance Sheet Date - Accounts are prepared annually to a specific date – this is called the Accounting Reference Date (ARD) or Balance Sheet Date (BSD). Businesses can choose their Accounting Reference Date – typically this will be a month end. Accruals Basis of Accounting and Accounts Preparation - This method records income as it is earned and expenditure as it is incurred, regardless of whether the monies have been received or paid by the ARD. Income is matched with the expenditure to which it relates, i.e. wages and salaries matched with income generated. This basis gives a fair reflection of financial performance – the accounts will show monies due (debtors) and monies owing (creditors). This compares with the cash basis, which only records monies received/paid and ignores liabilities or monies due. Audited Accounts - Accounts are said to have been audited when an independent examination of the financial statements and underlying records has been carried out and an opinion given. In most cases the audit will be focussed on the requirement for accounts to show a ‘true and fair view’. The auditor’s opinion is provided in the form of an Audit Report addressed to the company’s shareholders or Partners. Most private limited companies having an annual turnover of less than £5.6m are exempt from the audit requirement. There is no statutory requirement for Partnership accounts to be audited - it is up to the Partners to decide and for the Partnership Agreement to reflect their decision. An Accountant’s Report - This report states that the accounts have been prepared by a firm of accountants on the basis of information supplied. It explicitly states that no audit has been performed. Profit and Loss Account - Sometimes referred to as an Income and Expenditure Account, this summarises all the income due to, less all the expenses incurred by, the business. Rather like the hands of a clock, it sweeps up all the activities of the business for the given period (normally 12 months). The result is a profit or a loss (losses are usually shown in brackets). Profit - This is the total profit that the business has made during the accounting period – in the case of a Partnership to be shared between the partners and set off against their drawings (see below). Appropriation of Profits - Partnership accounts are usually supplemented by a Note to the Accounts indicating the profit allocation. The first tranche of profit might be to allocate specific sources of income to certain partners; the residual balance is then shared For further advice on this or other business in the partners’ profit sharing ratios (PSRs).
