GARDENS AND ARTS WEEKEND RAISES MONEY FOR THE HENFIELD HAVEN Jacky Welch, Martin Knight and Heather McFarlaine-Cryer presented a cheque to Lorette Mackie and Digby Stephenson on behalf of the Henfield Haven for £3,200 – raised over the very successful Gardens and Arts weekend in June this year. The money was raised at various open gardens around the village, with some gardens choosing to donate to their own selected charities. Jackie Welch said; “The weekend was a complete success, with a mixture of new gardens opening and some old favourites. There was a wonderful array of musicians and artists at the gardens which added to the enjoyment of the weekend.” 2014 and 2015 event supported the Henfield Scouts, this year the Haven was the chosen charity. Digby Stephenson said; “We are thrilled to receive this donation and were very pleased to be at the heart of Gardens and Arts. The Haven garden is an important part of our dementia facilities and lots of hard work has gone into the space by the Garden Club and volunteers. The money will be incredibly well spent, we will be improving the accessibility of the garden area. It was also nice to see some new visitors being introduced to The Haven over the weekend, it really did boost local awareness.

The villages of Wineham and Shermanbury are very friendly, neighbourly places and being in a relatively small parish many of us know each other quite well, especially those that pop into the Royal Oak or help out at St Giles or parish events. But the parish council is looking for that person who goes the extra mile to help a neighbour. We’re looking to recognise the ‘Good Neighbour’ who’s helped a fellow parishioner with good turns or favours that’s made their life that little bit easier by inviting them in for tea or lunch now and again, regularly giving them lifts, helping with gardening or shopping, looking after the children or walking the dog. We are delighted that Mike and Sharon Bailey at the Royal Oak in Wineham are sponsoring this award. The winner ‘s prize will be lunch for two at the Royal Oak and a commendation certificate awarded by the parish council at its annual general meeting in May 2017. Anyone can nominate a Shermanbury ‘good neighbour’ who’s helped out a fellow parishioner. The closing date is 30 April 2017 and application forms for the award are available by post from the parish clerk (The Shermanbury Parish Council Clerk, 67 Oak Tree Drive, Hassocks, BN6 8YA) or on the parish web site (www. shermanburyparishcouncil.co.uk) Paul Lightburn

Southwick Players is presenting a Dennis Potter classic ‘Blue Remembered Hills’, a thought provoking, sometimes chilling, at times hilarious play as their entry in this year’s Brighton & Hove Arts Council (BHAC) Drama Awards. This examination of memory and childhood directed by Nettie Sheridan and Gary Cook, is set in the impoverished Forest of Dean during World War II where children play on a summer afternoon. As they free fall through their day, the group’s wild and unrestrained relationships, both mimic the adult world and highlight the timeless casual cruelty (and kindness) of children.

The seven children (five boys and two girls) are all played by adults in this piece allowing the audience to experience the harsh themes of the play with no sugar coating. It holds a mirror up to our own childhood memories of carefree fun and also shows how the repercussions of action without thought can result in tragedy. Southwick Players have attracted some of their most experienced actors to take on these challenging roles as well as newcomers to the group, creating an exciting casting. ‘Blue Remembered Hills’ will be performed at The Barn Theatre, Southwick Street, Southwick from October 12 – 15 inclusive from 7.45pm. Tickets priced at £11 are on sale now from the Box Office 01273 597094 or to book online visit www. southwickplayers.org.uk Amanda Reeves

News | OCTOBER 2016 APPLE AMNESTY - SWAP YOUR APPLES FOR CIDER! Silly Moo cider will be open to swap any unwanted, clean, unsprayed, Sussex apples on Sunday 11th September for earlies and then Saturdays and Sundays during October between 10am - 12noon. Your apples will be weighed and you’ll be given an IOU. In the Spring you can collect your bottles of Silly Moo Cider. For every 5 kilos of apples you will receive 1 bottle of cider - last years swappers collected over 1,000 bottles of cider and tonnes of unwanted apples were pressed and added to the cider apple juice from the orchard at Trenchmore. The team at Trenchmore in Cowfold are looking for clean, unsprayed, ripe Sussex grown apples, any variety - cooking or eating. They will be juiced and fermented in small batches and, after much fettling and blending, the cider will be bottled. Each year is slightly different - the weather, the varieties and where they are grown will go to make the cider unique. Any queries please get in touch www.trenchmore. co.uk or facebook, tell your friends and don’t let any Sussex apples go to waste. Andrew Knowles

DAGBROOK LANE & BARBED WIRE Henfield is fortunate in having numerous Twittens and country walks, and one such delight is a small 150-yard stretch of Dagbrook Lane. This pleasant walk can be used by walkers and ramblers along this part of an old Drove road. The lane can be accessed by walking down the eastern side of Dunstalls meadow; a meadow in the summer filled with wild flowers and butterflies, then right into the quite stretch of Dagbrook Lane, which is filled with mature trees and bird song. At least that was until the land-owner whose fields border the southern side of Dagbrook Lane has decided to prevent all folk from using it, by the use of barbed wire at two entry points. An 1845 Tithe

map of Dagbrook Lane shows the road on the western side of Dunstalls meadow as Drove road and the eastern section down to Oreham Common as a Road. No ownership concerning this road is listed. Presumably, this is because the Drove road bordered many different farms and properties. A map in the Henfield Museum dated around the 1890s shows Dagbrook Lane bordered by fields on both its north and south sides as a road with definite boundaries. It crosses under the newly completed Shoreham to Horsham railway by way of a substantial brick bridge, thereby demonstrating its importance as a right of way to its users for the movement of cattle at that time. Since then, it has become a delightful tree lined oasis frequently used for many years by nature loving folk. Some of whom who still use it and can remember using it for up to 50 years. If you have used this walk over a number of years, or have any interest in this, we would like to hear from you. He said that he had finished a job elsewhere, had all this gravel left over and that his boss had told him to just get rid of it. My neighbour and I initially thought that he was giving it away. However, we became suspicious when he insisted on spreading it for us on our shared driveway. Upon further questioning, he revealed that he actually wanted ÂŁ5 a yard for it. If this chap calls upon you, please be aware that regardless of what he tells you, this gravel is not free. We do not want someone falling for this one and ending up with a large unexpected bill. The incident has been reported to Sussex Police. Paula Blake

News | OCTOBER 2016 REMEMBRANCE PARADE SUNDAY 13 NOVEMBER 2016 Following last year’s very successful Parade a request was made as to whether ex-service personnel with mobility scooters or wheelchair users could take part in the Parade. We would welcome their participation, but would ask that you first contact the Parish Office on 01273 492507 to inform them and to also let them know whether assistance would be required for someone to push their wheelchair. Depending on numbers, wheelchairs may be able to be provided. Mike Morgan

DISABLED ACCESS AT LLOYDS BANK Whilst I fully sympathise with the customers of Lloyds Bank in Henfield losing their branch in November I would suggest they switch to one of the other Banks in the Village and not lose too much sleep over it as my experiences with this branch make me feel overjoyed at it’s closing! I hold financial Power of Attorney for my aged mother who is disabled and has severe dementia. This summer Lloyds Bank failed to send a replacement debit card for my mothers account and I was unable to speak to anyone at the call centre, despite having registered for telephone banking. Eventually and with the promise that our local branch would be able to help, I decided to take my mother out of her care home and pushed her in a wheelchair to Lloyds Bank in Henfield High Street on 9 August, if only to prove that she was incapable of doing anything for herself let alone conduct her own financial affairs. I went into the Bank, leaving my mother outside, and asked if they had a disabled access or ramp to enable me to get my mother into the banking hall - unlike both of the other Banks in Henfield, neither facility was available. As my mother was by now calling out for me, not understanding why I had abandoned her, I waited outside with her (fortunately it wasn’t raining or snowing)! A

manager came outside and we had to try and conduct my mother’s private financial affairs on the pavement. Finally, after still more hour long ‘discussions’ with Lloyds Bank call centre, a new card eventually arrived on the 16th August followed by yet another one on the 22nd August. As if having a loved one with dementia wasn’t heartbreaking enough, thank you Lloyds bank you have greatly added to my distress. Ros Nimmo BN5 magazine received the following statement from a Lloyds Bank spokesperson: “We were sorry to hear of the distress and inconvenience experienced by Mrs Nimmo. With her Power of Attorney status in place, Mrs Nimmo has full control over her mother’s account and as such is able to fully operate and run the account on her behalf. We acknowledge that the service Mrs Nimmo received when trying to obtain a replacement debit card fell short of what we’d expect and we have compensated Mrs Nimmo accordingly. We have investigated the accessibility of our Henfield branch and unfortunately we are not able to make the required adjustments to provide a ramp or alternative access route around the entrance steps. We do have other branches in the area that are accessible at street level and where possible, we remain committed to making reasonable adjustments to support our customers.”

RICHARD PENNICARD MEMORIAL MATCH; THANK YOU Once again, Henfield businesses excelled in their generosity in supplying raffle prizes for the annual Henfield and RSPCA football match which took place on 19 August. The raffle alone raised £393 and with profit from the barbecue, £627 was raised altogether. The money raised was split between the Henfield Football Club and the RSPCA. This was the 18th game played in our son’s memory and each year we continue to be amazed, delighted and very proud at how many people look forward to the evening and enjoy raising money to help these two good causes. SHERMANBURY PARISH GOOD NEIGHBOUR AWARD The villages of Wineham and Shermanbury are very friendly, neighbourly places and being in a relatively small parish many of us know each other quite well, especially those that pop into the Royal Oak or help out at St Giles or parish events.

OCTOBER 2016 | News SILENCE, ON VOLE! Silence, we’re flying! This is a diary of recollections from fighter pilots of the 345 squadron in action during the latter part of Second World War, who for a short time were based at R.A.F Shoreham. These accounts reflect the emotions of these pilots who flew into action in their endeavour to free their homeland from the hold of an occupying enemy. These are first hand accounts and are written by young men who experienced a fierce patriotism for their homeland, a hatred for the enemy, a feeling of sadness for their lost comrades and perhaps moments of pleasure and comradeship during the wild parties at the Sussex Pad and the nightclubs of Brighton. The squadron was fortunate to have among their personnel, a gifted artist Toto Guerin whose delightful drawings capture the spirit of the moment. The dairies are both poetic and spiritual and I have followed as much as possible the French idiom, so that readers may get a feeling for the French language which expresses the narrative of these pilots. The book is available at Henfield Post Office, The Fox Small Dole, Tottington Manor and Shoreham Airport Museum and Visitor Centre at the modest price of £7.50. Food glorious HenFood:

A

Henfield’s first ever Street Food Festival

fter a glorious few weeks of sunny weather, it felt as if the heavens had decided to empty a whole month of rainfall on Henfield in one afternoon on Saturday 10th September. But the wet weather failed to dampen the spirits of the Henfield crowds who came to support HenFood, Henfield’s first-ever street food and music festival. The event took place in the Library Car Park and Henfield Post Office Garden, with the kind permission of Paul and Gail Way. The village hosted a whole array of street food stalls, including authentic Thai food from ThaiAngle, delicious pulled-pork and corn fritters from Ginger Rookes, Punjabi dhosas and delicious curries from Jai Jyot, crêpes from Oui Crêperie; cake confections from Kaylee’s Cakery and locally brewed beer from Downlands Brewery in Small Dole. Henfield’s BP Guild ran the bar, any profit from drinks sold goes to local youth charities. The event was organised by Henfield Community Partnership, local businesses and BN5 magazine in conjunction with the Horsham & District Food and Drink Festival which continued for the whole of September with various events across the county. Henfield participated with three Children’s events, including the Mad Hatter Tea Party trail. Children hunted shops in the High Street for all the elements of the Tea Party which the forgetful Mad Hatter had lost. Three lucky winners received entry vouchers for Sharky’s Soft Play kindly donated by Henfield Leisure Centre. Kaylee’s Cakery ran cupcake decorating workshops for children to create their own sticky delights at Henfield Crafts, and some children

tried their hand at baking for the Queen of Hearts Jam Tart Baking competition. The entries were beautiful – creatively decorated and showing some great skill. The judges, Mo Mitchie from Woodmancote and Henfield WI, Elaine Goodyear, Parish Councillor and myself, representing BN5 magazine, found deciding the winner in each category a really tough decision! The final results were: Alistair in the 12 and under category, Rosie in the 8 and under category and Harmony in the 5 and under category. They all won baking sets kindly donated by Henfield Furnishings and Cook Shop. Thank you to everyone who entered. Malcolm Eastwood looked after the PA for the afternoon and the event was given some colour and excitement in the form of Waffa’s Bollywood Dancing lessons. Will and Wolfie took to the stage later in the afternoon with an acoustic set of folk music , but regretfully Sonic Deluxe from Horsham had to be cancelled when the weather got a little too wet! All in all HenFood was a great success with some really positive messages on the BN5 Facebook page from local people who came along, and we hope it will return next year. Henfield Community Partnership is keen to get more Henfield events like Piazza Italia, Henfield Christmas Evening and HenFood as regular events for the village. It’s great fun being part of the organising team and Carol Eastwood would love to hear from you if you’d like to join us in creating a few more interesting events for the village. Please email her on events@henfieldCP.org if you’d like to see more events like this in the village. Emma Osman

About the

Sussex Wildlife Trust T

he Sussex Wildlife Trust is the county’s leading nature conservation organisation managing over 5,000 acres of prime woodland, heathland, wetland and meadow habitat including some of the finest wild places in Sussex. It speaks out and is listened to on conservation issues in our county influencing decisions of local, regional and national authorities and engages with farmers and landowners to ensure wildlife is not restricted to its nature reserves but can move freely through interconnected habitats and flourish. It also works with communities and local schools, encourages volunteering with a wide range of opportunities and works with the fishing industry and government towards sustainable fishing practices and designations of Marine Conservation Zones off the Sussex coast. Woods Mill at Henfield is a stunning 33 acre nature reserve open to the public throughout the year. The reserve which is free of charge to all visitors has a small car park with toilets and an all- weather path circling its large wildlife pond giving visitors the chance to see birds, dragonflies, butterflies, and a host of other insects and plants as they stroll round. Off the main track are flat grassy paths through meadow and woodland and in spring beautiful bluebell displays. It has been the headquarters of the Sussex Wildlife Trust for

over 50 years, providing a home not only to wildlife but to the staff members that enable the Trust to function. But Woods Mill is not just offices. It is primarily a reserve for people, a place not only to see wildlife, but to learn about it too. There are numerous guided walks throughout the year, as well as more formal educational events for both adults and children including nature tots - a wonderful introduction to the natural world for pre -school children. Over 4,000 children visit with their school each year and during half term and the long summer break we run holiday clubs on the nature reserve. There are also special free events designed to give a rich wildlife experience open to all members of the Trust. Maybe enjoy a moth morning or a nightingale evening with one of our experts or a wildlife walk led by our senior ecologist. While Woods Mill is the perfect location to both teach and learn about our wildlife and its conservation, for many it also provides a perfect quiet haven to enjoy an afternoon in the countryside. Sadly dogs cannot visit this reserve but are welcomed at most other Trust sites.

What to look for in autumn Autumn is a time of beautiful colours as the trees and hedgerows turn a stunning variety of reds, yellows and golds. During this time of change and as we creep towards winter we welcome wildlife visitors escaping colder climates and this includes the stunning short-eared owl. These graceful birds breed in the northern uplands of Britain and Europe, but fly south in winter to escape snow and freezing weather. Numbers of short eared owls visiting Sussex vary greatly from year to year and depend on three things; how successful the breeding season was, the severity of the winter and how many voles are available. Vole populations tend to follow a boom-bust pattern whereby numbers build up over a few years before crashing again. In ‘boom years there is an abundance of prey for short-

eared owls and they can raise many young but in ‘bust’ years finding foods in much harder and we see fewer owls. Unlike our other native owls, short eared owls can be seen hunting in daylight as well as at dusk. Midafternoon is a good time to see them flying back and forth (known as quartering) over tussocky fields using their keen eyesight and hearing to pinpoint small mammals in the undergrowth. Good places to spot them in October are near open flood plains and rough grassland and for more details of exactly where to go to see them contact Jess Price at WildCall our wildlife information hotline on 01273 497511. October is also a great time to see kingfishers They are smaller than you might think – about the size of a house sparrow but unmistakable as they flash past in a mix of electric blue and deep orange-red. Kingfishers chose slow moving or still water and hunt fish from riverside perches. They eat minnow, stickleback or bullhead which, when caught, is taken to a branch and battered repeatedly on the head with a thrashing action until dead, before being swallowed, always head first, to prevent spines, gills or scales getting lodged in the throat. A wildlife spectacle not to be missed at this time of year is the deer rut. Fallow deer and red deer can be seen at Knepp, a 3,500 acre Estate in West Sussex just south of Horsham where special safaris are arranged to watch these battles for supremacy as the woods resonate with the sound of clashing antlers and guttural roars. To find out more about becoming a member, becoming a volunteer, booking a wildlife course or event, or arranging a school trip or community group outing just visit our website: www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk or ring 01273 497523. WAIT UNTIL

DARK

I

HENFIELD THEATRE COMPANY

f you are of a nervous disposition, you may not wish to read on! The Henfield Theatre Company has, so far this year, entertained us with music, comedy and open air Shakespeare. The next production will be altogether different - a brilliantly written, tense psychological drama. The stage play, Wait Until Dark, was originally written by Frederick Knott and enjoyed its first successful run in the USA in 1966, starring Lee Remick. Its London debut the same year featured Honor Blackman in the main role. The following year it was made into the much acclaimed film starring Audrey Hepburn which earned her an Oscar nomination and the climax still features as one the top ten ‘scariest scenes’. The play was revived in the West End in 2003 with the setting transferred from Greenwich Village to Notting Hill, London. In 2013 a superb new adaptation by American playwright and screen writer Jeffrey Hatcher was presented in Los Angeles, and it is this version that will be staged in Henfield. Wait Until Dark is not a murder mystery – right from the very start the culprit is very clear – and just in case you miss it, he bumps off two more victims on stage, and then turns his vicious intention to our blind heroine…… Wait Until Dark is a true thriller, with strong 3 4 | B N 5 M A GA ZINE

characters and exciting events designed to raise the heart rate and keep you on the edge of your seat....and, be warned, the sensational climax will leave you breathless! The coming production is directed by Peter Ingledew, a very experienced actor and director who is well known to Henfield audiences. He commented “Ever since seeing the film in my youth, and playing the villain Roat in the 70s, I have wanted the opportunity to direct this thriller. I have given the play a local setting to emphasise the fact that crime exists in ordinary communities - not just on the streets of New York. Similarly, the characters are universal - from the innocent, through shades of villain, to the downright psychopathic – they are all around us – everywhere. I have a great cast and crew who are working hard to bring this excellent thriller to the Henfield Hall’s stage – don’t miss it!” Performances are at The Henfield Hall from Thursday 13 to Saturday 15 October, starting at 7.45pm. Tickets, priced £8 and £10 are available from Henfield Furnishings, High Street, Henfield, (01273 490080), from Monday 26 September. See the website: www.henfieldtheatrecompany.com for more information. The production is kindly sponsored by Goodsman Letting.

It works in partnership with South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAMB) NHS Trust and responds to emergency medical calls within the Henfield and District area, providing vital assistance to people who are ill or injured prior to the arrival of the Emergency Ambulance. Comprised totally of unpaid volunteers, the scheme is totally self-funded and relies on kind and generous donations from local people, businesses and organisations and fund-raising events. The money raised helps purchase equipment and keeps the scheme operational. When a 999 call is made within the Henfield and surrounding area an Emergency Ambulance is dispatched to the scene. At the same time the

1. Budgens:

Community Responder who is on duty is contacted and asked to attend. Because of the rural location of Henfield, community responders usually arrive first and can begin to treat the patient. We have also installed a number of Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) sites around the village. These are for anyone to use in the event of someone suffering a cardiac arrest. No training is needed to use a defibrillator as it is designed to talk the user through every step of the procedure and it is not possible to do harm if the procedure is followed. However, please always dial 999 at the earliest possible stage in this kind of emergency so that an ambulance can be dispatched and advice can be given over the phone. Do not leave the patient, send someone else to get the defib. Dave Fletcher

Making Tax Digital MTD. This will include making simpler software and Apps free;

TAX

ƒƒ Some

businesses will be ‘digitally excluded’ and will be exempt from MTD.;

ƒƒ A new “points based” penalty regime for late

Service

filing of Self Assessment declarations;

ƒƒ Higher penalties for late payment of tax, either through penalty interest or surcharges;

T

ƒƒ Consultation

The first thing to note is the timescale for the changes. The intention is for the system to be fully implemented by April 2020. The changes will be phased in with business Income Tax and NIC reporting being digital from April 2018, VAT from April 2019 and the remainder the following year. In outline, the way this will work is that businesses and individuals will acquire software or Apps, which will allow their digital tax account with HMRC to be updated with details of their taxable income and/or their detailed business accounting figures. Taxpayers will be encouraged to update their digital tax accounts on a quarterly basis, with annual or quarterly adjustments for tax purposes. It is thought that this will save costs and that it will help taxpayers monitor more accurately their likely tax liabilities. This will be linked to a new enforcement regime and will introduce the ability to make voluntary tax payments on account – Pay As You Go.

ƒƒ Having

he Government has published a series of six consultation documents on their Making Tax Digital (MTD) strategy. The consultation period closes on 7 November 2016.

The main proposals include:

ƒƒ Exempting

the smallest unincorporated businesses from MTD completely. A turnover/ gross income limit of £10,000 per annum is suggested for this;

ƒƒ Deferring the start of MTD for the next tier of small businesses by one year;

ƒƒ Help

for business to make the transition to

on potential exemptions for charities and Community Amateur Sports Clubs;

ƒƒ Allowing cash based reporting for some smaller businesses as a simplification;

a cash basis for unincorporated property businesses;

ƒƒ Reform

of the basis periods for the selfemployed so as to simplify the system;

ƒƒ Making changes to the capital/revenue divide in determining expenditure that is tax deductible.

Taxpayers’ agents will be able to access the digital tax account and make adjustments to Tax Returns as required, for say year end adjustments or tax adjustments. It is intended that the software and Apps will be developed so as to automatically add back such items as entertaining and depreciation, which are not tax deductible. There will be online help integrated into the software that will help taxpayers with the process. These changes will require taxpayers and their advisers to fundamentally change the way they operate and report incomes, profits and gains for tax purposes. Some people who are digitally ‘savvy’ will cope more easily than others. HMRC believe that the impact of MTD will lead to significant savings for businesses, of up to £400 million by the end of 2019/20. Our initial view is that there will inevitably be a set up cost for taxpayers, who will need to acquire new software and change their systems to meet the requirements of MTD, Oh what fun lies ahead……!
