Editor’s LETTER

Welcome to our November issue. We would like to thank everyone in the village who came forward to help us piece together details News of four of the men whose names appear on the from the BN5 area Henfield War Memorial, the men who died at the Battle of Passchendaele, 100 years ago. When we started our research, we had just four Local Interest names; by the time we had finished we had built Remembrance in Henfield a picture of these men, of how they had lived and died. Through finding out their stories, scant as some of the information was, the enormity of the battle hit home to us. Real lives, real people. Not just old English names carved in stone on the side Health Henfield keeping healthy of a building that we all walk past when we go to collect our newspapers. George, Alfred, Ernest and active and George. Four vibrant young men in their prime, four of the thousands of men who experienced the living hell of the trenches and paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Local Interest Elvis at the Henfield Hall We could only find one photograph; that of a young and handsome George Thompsett, taken it’s believed on the day he married his wife, Annie. This year, as I stand with so many of you in the Index village and listen to the Parade Master read out the names of the men listed on Henfield’s War of advertisers Memorial, I will think of these men, of the wives, children, mothers and fathers they left behind. “When you go home, tell them of us and say: for your tomorrow, we gave our today.” (John Maxwell Edmunds, 1916)

STEYNING GRAMMAR FUNDRAISING FOR THE CARIBBEAN We have over 20 students at Steyning Grammar School, boarding and day, for whom home is in the Caribbean - and they have been directly affected by the recent hurricanes. Talking to them about this is truly humbling. They have launched an appeal, with our full support, to raise money for the British Red Cross Hurricane Appeal. If you can support their fundraising please go to: www. justgiving.com/fundraising/steyning-grammarschool. Thank you for you support. Nick Wergan, Headteacher

NEWS FROM HENFIELD PARISH COUNCIL Henfield Parish Council sets aside a small sum of money each year to give a number of grants to local clubs and organisations. If you would like to apply for funding, please do so in writing to Henfield Parish Council at the Henfield Hall, or email us at office@henfield.gov.uk If possible please include a copy of last year’s accounts and let us know what the grant will be used for. Council encourages local groups to apply. The closing date for applications is Friday 8 December. With bonfire night fast approaching, please could I again ask residents to show consideration for their neighbours if you are intending to let off fireworks. Henfield Parish Council receives several complaints each year in respect of individuals setting off their fireworks late on week nights, which keeps awake those of us that work and young children who have to attend school the following day. Please show respect for your fellow residents and enjoy the festivities at a reasonable hour. Kevin Wright, Henfield Parish Council

From 5 February 2018 Horsham District Council will be rolling out across the district changes to our household bin collections. Your recycling will be collected one week, and your household waste collected the same day the following week. We will be sending every household an information pack in January 2018 with further details about these changes, including the specific date when your bin collections change and what day of the week your bins will be collected. Depending on your needs, additional bin capacity can be provided for those households who meet one of the criteria below. You may be eligible for a larger household rubbish bin or you may want to request a larger or additional recycling bin. You will need to apply for this by Thursday 30 November. The exceptions policy for a larger household waste bin is similar to that used by other councils with alternate weekly waste collections – ie if you have medical needs, households with five or more permanent residents, or households with three or more children in nappies. There is no cost for the bin but there will be a delivery charge of £5 for each additional or larger bin. Apply at www.horsham.gov.uk/newbinscollections or telephone: 01403 733144. For advice and tips on how to reduce the amount in your waste bin and recycle, reuse and recycle more visit our online pages here www.horsham. gov.uk/thinkbeforeyouthrow Horsham District Council

A DATE FOR YOUR DIARIES Plans are afoot for a major fundraising event next March: on Friday 23 March 2018 there will be a Grand Silent Auction to raise funds for The Henfield Haven and The Henfield Hall. Tickets will include a delicious supper and more details will follow in the New Year. Please watch this space for further information! Pamela Chaston

It will be all treats and no tricks when full of Beans coffee shop on Henfield High Street re-opens under new management on 30 October! Local resident Doug Walford has taken over the business and wants to continue the good work that former owners Linda and Ollie started. Melissa Webb will be managing the cafe and they aim to provide the same friendly service and great coffee that Henfield has become accustomed to, with as much as possible sourced locally: the coffee beans will be roasted in Small Dole and teamed with non-homogenised milk from Rusper to make the perfect coffee. They will also be serving specialty teas such as Chai Latte and a range of cakes, panninis and sandwiches, including gluten-free options. They have great plans to extend the opening hours, including Sundays and early mornings, so watch this space! Melissa Webb & Doug Walford

From the 1 November the Library will have a wonderful selection of charity Christmas cards together with stocking filler gifts. If you haven’t visited us lately, have you been missing out? Please pop in and we can explain how the library service is adapting to the online times that we live in. Sallyanne, Shirley, Lucy and Tracey

It’s never been easier to get involved in St Barnabas House’s ‘Wear it Festive’ fundraising campaign! This Christmas, St Barnabas is asking local businesses, schools and individuals to hold a fundraising event – and help raise money for local hospice care. What will you do to raise money for St Barnabas? For hints and fun ideas, why not register for one of our helpful fundraising packs? Wear it Festive takes place on Friday 15 December, or you can pick any date in December. St Barnabas House’s care is free to all patients, but to provide our care services, at the hospice and in the local community, costs £16,793 a day. JUMPING FOR CHARITY Henfield Funeral Services travelled to Headcorn, Kent for the charity Skydive on Saturday 26 August 2017 in aid of St Peters Church. We arrived for 1pm for the guys to do their training beforehand. The weather was fantastic and it was such a fun day while waiting for the gents to jump 12,000 feet. We had our picnic blankets out at the ready to relax, while the gents prepared. The skies were clear, and at around 5pm the gents started to make their way to the plane. We had such an amazing view while watching with anticipation to see the first jumpers. With our stiff necks looking up into the sky, we finally saw the gents coming down very gracefully. We are so proud of them and they all arrived safely. We want to thank everyone who kindly supported us, with Reverend Paul and Jan Doick attending on the day, and so far, we have raised approximately £1,200 for the Church. CULTURE IS… A short film produced by Henfield creative digital agency Dreamshock was premiered at the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 launch event at The Capitol Theatre on Wednesday 27 September. The film, entitled ‘Culture is…’ - commissioned by Horsham District Council, sponsors of the Year of Culture – features a series of vox pops from Horsham residents on the subject of their district’s arts and cultural heritage, interspersed with shots of iconic landmarks. Dreamshock captured a cross-section of contributions from local writers, actors, beatboxers, woodland craft makers and wine growers, as well as Julia Donaldson MBE – author of The Gruffalo and Stick Man and Children’s Laureate, 20112013 – who is patron of the Year of Culture. Our Call for Sites notice has been published and we have written to all of the site owners / agents of the allocated sites of the first plan, notifying them that we are producing a second plan. These will go through the site assessment process, which will be helped by the Housing Needs Assessment that has been carried out by AECOM on our behalf. We will give developers the opportunity to give a site presentation at a public meeting. We will be holding those meetings at 7pm Tuesday 14th November and 7pm Tuesday 28th November. BIG BN5 DRAW THIS YEAR.... IN AID OF THE BRAIN TUMOUR CHARITY!

CELEBRATE A LIFE THIS CHRISTMAS

We are pleased to announce that the recipient of our Christmas fundraising with the Big BN5 Christmas Draw will be The Brain Tumour Charity. We are supporting this very special charity because an important member of our Henfield High Street community - Olivia Pugh (who you will recognise as the owner of Hamfelds) has been undergoing intensive treatment for a brain tumour over the past few weeks. Her treatment will keep her in London for the next nine months, under the dedicated care of expert consultants and nursing staff at King’s College Hospital. Olivia is in the process of becoming a ‘Community Ambassador’ for BTC, so when she’s back up and about you’ll be seeing her around the village working towards greater awareness and earlier diagnosis of brain tumours. The Brain Tumour Charity are a small charity who fundraise for vital research as well as support those who have been diagnosed. Their awardwinning ‘Head Smart’ campaign has seen the diagnosis timespan in children fall from 13 weeks to 6.4 weeks, which vastly improves survival rates. Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killers in children and those under 40, at BN5 we will supporting BTC with their awareness campaign.

Your local hospice, St Barnabas House, invites you to Light Up a Life. It’s your chance to join a very special event as we come together to remember and celebrate the lives and memories of loved ones this Christmas. Our services of celebration and remembrance will be held at Worthing Assembly Hall on Monday 11 December at 4.30pm and 7pm. If you can’t come to either service, you can still take part. We can send you an Order of Service, and you can pick up a votive candle from one of our hospice shops to light at home and remember your loved one. To find out how you can be a part of Light Up a Life, please call our Fundraising Team on 01903 706329. Janet Parsons

marks the 100th anniversary of the infamous Battle of Passchendaele which has become a symbol of the mud, madness and futility of the First World War.

The battle consisted of a series of failed British offensives against the German forces fought from July through to November near Ypres on the Western front. The battlefield quickly turned into a quagmire and over the three months of fighting, hundreds of thousands of men lost their lives on both sides and many thousands more were injured. 2 6 | B N 5 M A GA ZINE

For most of us, fortunately, the horror of Passchendaele is something that we have only read about or seen stories of on the big screen. Because of this it is easy to forget that those affected were real people with real lives and real families. Several men from Henfield and the surrounding area were caught up in the misery of Passchendaele and we put a call out to see if we could find out more about them. We are massively grateful to local residents Julia Dew, Maureen Fletcher, Helen Loader and Alice Sayers who have very kindly shared with me their knowledge of four of the men who lost their lives.

t was so rewarding to put on the “Keeping Henfield Healthy – a community brainstorm” event and to feel the energy in the room and listen to the ideas and opinions from people of all walks of life. There was agreement that the population is getting older and the NHS and social care can’t afford the increasing costs. There is a lack of paid carers for patients locally. We have to find another way. Ideally we would want to help the pre-frail to remain robust, so they can embrace life and avoid becoming frail and vulnerable. Our community in Henfield is already strong, with lots of clubs and charities, yet we still have many people who are isolated and lonely. The statistics, both nationally and locally, are indicating that we need to put some measures in place to cope. There is an overall projected 8.3% rise in the population in Coastal West Sussex over the next 10 years, of that rise 20% are in the 65-84 year old demographic and 31% will be over 85. Another alarming statistic is that loneliness is one of the major concerns of older people, with 29% of people over 80 reporting high levels of loneliness. As a GP I am acutely aware that loneliness can lead to depression, anxiety and health issues, so tackling the symptoms before they happen can only improve the health of our village and ease the burden on our struggling NHS. A clear message from the brain-storming session 3 0 | B N 5 M A GA ZINE

was that we need a locally based “befriending” scheme that would help isolated people re-engage with the community. We have already formed a very dynamic sub-group to look at this. Watch this space and be ready to volunteer to be a “friend”. The second clear message was that we need really good interconnections between all the different clubs, charities and services that already exist. There is so much out there, how do you know what is there for you and how to access it? BN5 and the mapping done by the Community Partnership and Age Concern give us a superb starting point. Ideally we need someone with fantastic local knowledge and training to signpost people to the help they need. Our LCN (local community network – group of careworkers in Chanctonbury), chaired by me, is prioritizing this as a need for our area. At Henfield Medical Practice, we have been focusing on identifying frail elderly people (and sometimes their families / carers) and trying to help them, using a multi-disciplinary approach - physio, social worker, nurse, occupational therapist, mental health worker, GP. This is called Proactive Care. We try and anticipate problems and avoid them or at least have plans in place in case something goes wrong. The patient has a key worker to contact in time of crisis. They will all have care plans that specify what the patient would like to happen if certain crises occur. Having averted a crisis, it would be good to be able to

here is quite a buzz in the Anscombe Production Associates office because the artists that appear in our musical production of ‘Elvis Las Vegas 1969’ have wholeheartedly agreed to perform for the Henfield Haven 2nd Anniversary Concert at The Henfield Hall. The 1st Henfield Haven Anniversary concert last year was a huge success for both the community and the Haven, and was enjoyed by a sell-out audience. Everybody at APA agreed with Tim Anscombe that, should we be invited back, we should present a concert version of one of our productions. Well, we have been, so…… Enter Elvis! Yes, Mr ELVIS PRESLEY! Early last year, Tim was invited by guitarist and bandleader Neale Hobday to hear a group of professional musicians in Kent perform the numbers played during The King’s concerts. To say that he was ‘blown away’ by the quality and preciseness of this tribute band was an understatement! The professionalism and quality that enhanced the session he witnessed, together with a stunning Elvis tribute performer Scott Elvis, was a show in itself! A very enthusiastic APA was invited by the band to help create a new musical based on Elvis’s return to the Las Vegas stage in 1969. Working with the band and a plethora of professionals as teammates, ‘Elvis Las Vegas 1969’ was created in the latter part 2016. The full musical was presented in April 2017 at The Woodville Theatre in Gravesend, and was rapturously acclaimed by the audiences. Tim and his team have devised a tribute show which captures the very best of the music of Elvis. For the

first half of the Henfield show they have added some older Elvis Presley favourites from 1954 onwards for those lovers of the great man - songs like ‘That’s Alright Mama’, ‘I Forgot to Remember to Forget’, ‘I Beg of You’, ‘I Need Your Love Tonight’ and a few other Memphis-style memories. The second half will be the concert as performed in 1969 at the International Hotel Las Vegas, full of songs specially chosen by both Presley and his Manager Tom Parker to woo audiences back to Elvis’s live

shows. These include ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight’, ‘Words’, ‘Falling in Love with You’, ‘Suspicious Minds’, ‘Love Me Tender’, ‘In the Ghetto’ and many more. Audiences at the opening of the show in Gravesend wanted encore after encore, and Tim hopes that you will do the same. 40 years after his untimely death Elvis Presley is as popular today with young audiences as with those fortunate enough to have grown up with The King. Scott Elvis, who will play the role of Elvis in Henfield, is an amazing performer. His timing and rock and roll aura is stunning. Those of you who love this era just close your eyes and you will be with ELVIS in… Las Vegas… in Henfield on 26 November at 3pm. The show is being sponsored by six local businesses whose continuing support of the Haven is greatly appreciated. Our thanks to Nigel Parsons Builders, The White Hart, Jeremy’s, Stokes of Henfield, A&B Accountancy Matters, Rushfields and Doubledot Printers. Tickets for this potential West End professional production are £20, and available from Jasmines Florists, Stokes of Henfield and from The Henfield Haven in Hewitts. The price includes a ’60s-style snack at the ‘Hot Rod Café’ during the interval. The bar will be open before the show starts and during the interval. Seating is not reserved, and doors will open at 2:15pm. Don’t miss this unique event, and come and support the Henfield Haven. Digby Stephenson

Calendar Pets!

W

hen I was in my final year at university a suggestion was put forward to do a calendar for charity. It was around the time of the infamous WI calendar depicting artful shots of WI ladies in various states of undress. Somewhat predictably and probably after a couple of brainstorming sessions in the student union, it was decided that we should do the same. The result was certainly a lot less artful and probably bought a tear to the eye for all the wrong reasons… I and a couple of others were given the honour of the December page so that anyone misfortunate enough to have purchased a calendar would be able to enjoy the “fruits” of our labour throughout the festive period. My Mum was one lucky recipient and hung it on the kitchen wall - I can remember that it was certainly the topic of a few conversations during the Christmas break. While I am pleased to say that the calendar turned out not to be a turkey but was actually rather successful, I still look back on it with a fair bit of regret\ remorse\down right shame! So much so, that I have vowed to destroy any copy that I should stumble upon forever more. There will probably be a point where the Royal Veterinary College final year calendar of 2002 will achieve a value through rarity alone…

With these emotional scars, you can imagine that I was less than enthusiastic when Rebecca, our Head Receptionist, suggested that we do a “Hawthorn” calendar for 2018. I pointed out that a lot of water has gone under the bridge since 2002, not to mention a few inches around the waist have accumulated! I was very relieved (as I am sure anyone reading this article will be) to hear that the subjects of the proposed calendar were in fact animal and not human.

For the past few years we have run a photo competition on our practice facebook page. It’s simple – submit a picture of your moggy or pooch to us and everyone votes on their favourite. Whether you like facebook or not, it is a bit of fun and the winning dog and cat get the honour of their picture being on our vaccine reminders for the following year plus a free booster vaccination. This year we had a fantastic response with nearly 200 photos being submitted and some fabulous entries. Rather than condemn them to archives of facebook for all time, we thought it would be great to produce a calendar showcasing them. The calendar features the top 6 dogs and cats by vote in the competition as well as ALL the entrants on the covers – everyone is represented! The proceeds of the calendar are going to two very worthwhile local animal charities with which the practice has relations – The Retired Greyhound Trust and Paws and Claws. So, if you would like to support the charities or would like a nice animal calendar for 2018, then you can pick one up at either of our surgeries for £6 or order via phone or email and we can post them out (cost of postage is in addition). We hope you like the calendar and we’re pretty sure no-one will regret being in it 15 years later! Jonathan Underwood

Pension salary sacrifice

T

he 2016 Autumn Statement announced changes to salary sacrifice for many benefits, resulting in an erosion of the tax and National Insurance contribution (NIC) benefits. Pension salary sacrifice is not included in those changes, so remains tax and NIC efficient.

Salary sacrifice is an arrangement between an employer and their employees, which enables staff to boost their existing pension contributions. For most employees, this remains the most tax efficient means of saving for retirement. With minimum pension contributions under auto-enrolment increasing in April 2018 and April 2019, salary sacrifice is a good option to maximise the tax advantages and help provide savings. Employees give up part of their gross salary or bonus in exchange for a non-cash benefit, a pension contribution. The employee chooses how much they want to exchange and their gross salary is reduced by this amount. The employer then increases their pension contribution by the amount sacrificed. Just as salary payments are allowable for tax relief, so are pension contributions. Making pension contributions in this way reduces the amount of NIC both the employer and the employee pay. The employer saves 13.8% of the amount sacrificed in NICs, whilst employees will save between 2% and 12% of the amount they sacrifice, depending upon their earnings. These NI savings can be used to help boost employees’ pension contributions or take-home pay. There are no set rules as to how an employer should

set up a salary exchange scheme, but if the employer reinvests some or all of the employer’s NIC savings back into the pension scheme, this will give the employees the most benefit. Salary sacrifice is not always suitable for everyone. Consideration should be given to:

The impact on other benefits that are linked to salary, i.e. death benefits or overtime, although it is still possible for an employer to use a ‘notional’ or pre-sacrifice salary for these benefits; Mortgage lending that may be linked to actual salary received; Statutory benefits which may be affected by a reduction in salary; e.g. statutory maternity/ paternity pay; Terms and conditions of employment will have to be varied as employees are giving up their contractual right to the future cash remuneration of the amount sacrificed; Salary sacrifice must not reduce gross pay below the National Minimum Wage. For further advice on this or other business issues contact Paul Samrah on: 01737 781546 or Email psamrah@kingstonsmith.co.uk
