Some of the cast of Henfield Theatre Company’s latest production, Oh What a Lovely War!, are featured on our cover this month. The photoshoot took place at Brighton Pier, where the musical is set. There are some strong reasons for HTC choosing to stage this production, which is based around events during the First World War. Two members of the original Richard Attenborough film, Jean Reeve and Lee Fyles, live in Henfield. The story is even more romantic - read page 36 to find out why! Good luck to the cast of this wonderful show, please make sure you get your tickets soon - it’s sure to sell out incredibly fast. We hope you enjoyed the sunny Piazza Italia at the beginning of April, it was great to see so many people out in the village on a Sunday. The day was another success for the Henfield Community Partnership, who are working hard to bring some fantastic events to our village. It couldn’t have happened without the volunteers who turned out to marshal and help, thank you all, it’s hugely appreciated. So begins another Henfield summer - Gardens and Arts is just around the corner, followed by the Henfield Village Fayre on the common. Make sure you put the dates in your diary - and get growing / painting / making / preserving if you’re planning to enter the show! Enjoy the sunshine,

News | MAY 2017 HENFIELD CRICKET CLUB – GIRL’S TRAINING

LLOYDS PHARMACY RE-OPENED Lloyds Pharmacy was re-opened on 8 March by Parish Council Chairman Ray Osgood, following a transformation to modernise the pharmacy and its healthcare services. The High Street Lloyds Pharmacy has opened its doors with a renewed focus on delivering forwardthinking services for conditions such as chronic pain and asthma. Prescription services remain at the heart of Lloyds Pharmacy’s offering. Patients can seek the advice of the pharmacist, should they need help taking their medication, and can nominate their local Lloyds Pharmacy for the electronic prescription service. Local residents can also now benefit from the introduction of an enhanced pain management service; bespoke advice for helping those living with chronic or experiencing acute pain. For customers needing that little extra support when performing everyday tasks or who have difficulty with mobility, the store will also stock products from its ‘Betterlife from Lloyds Pharmacy’ range. As well as this, the team will now be able to provide a tailored service to help customers who require aids for hearing. Lloyds Pharmacy is open Monday – Friday 8.30am-7pm and Saturday 9am-5pm. We’re delighted to confirm that Sussex Cricketer, Ellen Burt, will be running the girl’s coaching at Henfield Cricket Club this year. The sessions will run for 8 weeks (5.30 – 6.30pm) over the summer, starting on Thursday 18 May. The sessions are open to girls from Year 4 upwards and are a great opportunity to learn or develop your cricket skills and make new friends. We want to share our love of the game so hope to see as many as possible on the Common, whether you’ve played before or this is your first time. Hopefully one day, you’ll go on to play with our thriving Women’s XI or maybe even follow in Ellen’s footsteps and play for Sussex. Please email coltsgirls@henfieldcricketclub.com or see www.henfieldcricketclub.com for more details. Interested in cricket but Year 3 or below? Well don’t worry as you have your chance to shine, thanks to ECB’s All Stars Cricket programme. HENFIELD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Following on from the Annual Parish Meeting in March, where a large majority of those residents present agreed to support the production of a second Neighbourhood Plan, Henfield Parish Council duly decided at its meeting on 4 April to produce a new plan. As before, this will be treated as a community project. Residents that would like to volunteer to assist with the production of the plan are encouraged to email the Parish Council at office@ henfield.gov.uk with their details. This will again be a huge project, but one that will be beneficial to the community as a whole, in the long-run. Kevin Wright, Parish Clerk

News | MAY 2017 NEW KIT FOR HENFIELD UNDER 12’S Henfield Under 12s have recently been given a new set of Kit paid for by their long-time sponsors Coles Automotive. Manager Richard Hill said “The new kit is not cheap and we are very grateful to Alex and Richard at Coles for the sponsorship. The old kit was 2 years old and as you can imagine with boys this age it was starting to look a bit stretched.” However, it will not go to waste – “We have been asked by St. Peters School to pass it on to them as it will fit the boys and girls in Years 5 and 6 perfectly. We were delighted to help – The school is desperately short of funds at present and this will save them from wearing some very old kit. At least half the squad left St. Peters last summer and they all remember how tatty the old shirts were.” The Under 12s have had a good season finishing 3rd in our division, having won 11 of our 17 competitive matches. Last year we didn’t win a single competitive match so we are delighted with the improvement. The picture was taken at Blackstone Recreation ground where many of the Henfield Junior teams play (from U9 through to U12). This facility is such a great asset for the club.

1 4 | B N 5 M A GA ZINE

Without it we would struggle to have enough junior pitches to play on, especially given the poor state of the Rothery and Kings Field pitches at this time of the season. Richard Hill

CALL FOR IDEAS – YOUR COMMUNITY NEEDS YOU! You’ve read the headlines…the NHS is in crisis, the money has run out, GP surgeries are closing (four so far in West Sussex). All unfortunately true. How are we doing in Chanctonbury and how could we make life better? I’ve had a look at our demographic and health data for Chanctonbury (comprising the GP practices of Henfield, Steyning, Storrington and Billingshurst). We are working incredibly hard to keep pace with increasing demand from all directions, and we are doing pretty well! Compared to other areas we live longer in Chanctonbury and have lower levels of obesity, disability, unemployment and emergency admissions to hospital, although we do have a couple of pockets of relative deprivation. However, since we are living longer, we have more frail elderly and dementia and cancer sufferers in Chanctonbury. Our NHS, the best health system in the world, is struggling to survive, and we do NOT want to lose it. Our population is aging and getting more needy, yet NHS resources are dwindling. We are already brilliant at providing support in Chanctonbury, with some innovative schemes and clubs, but there are some areas where we could do with new ideas. The data clearly illustrates that those areas with strong community networks have much better health outcomes. Did you know that loneliness in the elderly can be as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes per day? Perhaps we can develop the AgeUK befriending scheme in Chanctonbury. The GPs, nurses, social workers, mental health workers, and patient representatives across Chanctonbury are all starting to join together into one Local Community Network to try and deliver better care more efficiently, whilst maintaining continuity of care as much as we can. For more news go to... www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

MAY 2017 | News We need more carers in Chanctonbury, and we need to continue to develop interesting activities for everyone to enjoy. The Haven is a great example of this in Henfield. They provide some care, put on interesting courses and serve a good value wholesome lunch. I would like to see information health hubs, or health clubs, developing in each practice area. We could then really look at a rolling program of health promotion that suits our locality eg. childhood obesity, adult binge drinking. It would also help people find out what there is locally. So you can help by making sure you use the NHS appropriately and if you have any ideas that might contribute to our community, or even have the inclination to volunteer, we’d love to hear from you. How about developing a buddying/befriending scheme to offer help to older people? How about getting together with a group of friends to expand these ideas? As a next step, the Friends of Henfield Medical Practice Trust, chaired by Peter Bates, is going to open up the AGM in the summer to any interested stakeholders or villagers. Date to be announced shortly. Karen Crawford Clarke, Henfield Medical Practice

HENFIELD FOOTBALL CLUB – GIRLS TRAINING Henfield Football Club are really excited to announce they will be running girls training sessions from Wednesday 3 May. ALICE’S DOG GROOMING CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY On Saturday 25 March, Alice’s Dog Grooming celebrated a year of success. When she launched the shop in 2016, business owner Alice Taylor was just 19 years old, but now with a long list of happy customers, she’s proven that, despite her age, it was the right decision to take that leap of faith. When she was asked why the business has been so popular, Alice said: ‘”It’s honestly been a massive team effort. My family and friends have been a huge support over the last year. They’ve helped me with quirky window displays, sourcing new and interesting gift ideas, visiting trade shows and hosting events. I couldn’t have done it without them. I also think we offer that personal touch that customers want to see so they know their pet is being well looked after.” Now a blossoming business and a valued part of the community, Alice’s Dog Grooming is known for its relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. If you haven’t visited yet, pop in for a sniff around, where you’ll find a selection of unique gifts (for hounds and humans) and a separate parlour at the back with homely pens and comfy beds. www.alicesdoggrooming.co.uk Alice Taylor

HENFIELD FOOTBALL CLUB YOUTH TOURNAMENT Henfield Football Club attained FA Charter status a few years back and with over 200 youth players and 8 squads at youth level, the Club continues to grow. For the 5th consecutive year, Henfield FC are hosting a Youth Football Tournament on The Kings Field. The tournament, for Under 7s through to Under 16s, has attracted entries from across Sussex and beyond – and is being held over the weekend of Saturday 20 - Sunday 21 May.

1 6 | B N 5 M A GA ZINE

Most age groups have a number of host Henfield FC squads competing – so please do put the dates in your diary to pop up and watch the matches (and cheer on our Henfield teams!). We naturally hope the weekend will be a success (please let it be dry!) – we are really grateful to the many local traders that have supported the Club by advertising in the tournament programme or providing raffle prizes. The tournament programme (£3) includes a free tea/coffee voucher and is packed with all the information you need. We will have refreshments as well as a bouncy castle and the ever popular ice cream van. Thanks go to HART and Henfield Medical Centre, who will be in attendance. With the numbers expected, there will inevitably be additional traffic leading to parking issues. As in previous years, we will have stewards around the immediate area to direct and assist as well as clear directional signage in place for the visiting squads. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience that may be caused to local residents by the additional street parking and traffic, which we will endeavour to keep to an absolute minimum. Please do come along and support our village’s youth football teams – as they play with pride and passion and no little skill too. Paul Samrah, Henfield FC

NIGHT TO REMEMBER MIDNIGHT WALK St Barnabas House hospice is preparing for its biggest ever Night to Remember midnight walk to celebrate 10 years of this successful event. Taking place on Saturday 24 June, the 10th popular moonlit fundraising event will see over 1,000 ladies setting off at midnight on a walk along Worthing seafront to raise vital funds for their local hospice. Over the past nine years, over 9,000 ladies have taken to the streets of Worthing and have collectively raised over £1.3 million for the hospice. Setting off from Worthing Leisure Centre ladies can choose to walk 7, 13.1 or 20 miles, with the 20 mile route taking ladies all the way to Shoreham and back. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the walk, there will be some very special surprises to ensure that it truly is a ‘Night to Remember’. Registration for Night to Remember closes on Monday 12 June. You can register to take part at www.nighttoremember.org.uk/stb. St Barnabas House needs an army of 250 volunteers to help make the event successful. Volunteers are needed between the hours of 9pm on Saturday 24 June and 8am on Sunday 25 June

I wanted to thank the generous customers and staff of One Stop for making donations to a children’s charity that I am going to work for. I am a 20 year old student at Bristol University and as part of the year abroad for my French and Spanish degree, I will be volunteering at an orphanage for physically and mentally handicapped children in Peru for four months. I also work at One Stop in my holidays and in the three weeks before I left for Peru, my store manager at One Stop allowed me to put a donation box near the tills. This raised a fantastic £102.77. The whole sum has been paid directly to the Brighton based charity, Kiya Survivors, which runs the orphanage out in Peru. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed. Issy Shaw

News | MAY 2017 my room to find a morning suit hanging from the bed. My initial thought was that we were having a fancy-dress party! Then the penny started to drop and I was speechless. An hour and a quarter after finding out I was getting married I was standing at the front of a beautiful orangerie watching my gorgeous Jo being walked down the aisle by her brother. With my children, Oliver & Megan beside us it was the most special moment of my life. So, can I take this opportunity of thanking the Henfield girls, Tiff, Derry, Ginette, Sue, Kaz & Julia for helping to organize what must be one of the biggest and best birthday surprises anyone could ever have. And, to my stunning wife Jo for making me the proudest man in Sussex. Lewis Williams

CHRIST’S HOSPITAL SCHOOL INVITES BURSARY APPLICATIONS

THE BIGGEST 50TH SURPRISE EVER With my 50th birthday closing in, my partner of 19 years, Jo, told me that as she had no idea what to buy me, so she was sending me to Somerset with seven close friends for three nights, which I thought was a fantastic idea. Little did I know that she had arranged for us to get married! When we moved to Edburton 15 years ago I had asked Jo to marry me, but whenever I brought the subject up Jo had always said she wasn’t really that bothered. Without my knowledge, Jo had booked the wedding 18 months ago and the girls of Henfield had been in planning/deceit mode ever since. After 2 nights in Somerset I was told that we were staying somewhere special on the Sunday night and I was amazed when we pulled into St Audries Park, a magnificent country hotel. I was taken to

LIONS PRESENT LEARNING RUG As part of the Lion’s Centenary Celebrations, Henfield and District Lions presented a Learning Rug to St Peter’s Primary School year 1. Complete with cartoon bugs in each sitting space, the rug encourages concentration during reading and floor-based activities. Teacher Miss Duncliffe said; “The rug is a real talking point and has helped the children organise themselves ready for learning.” The Lions will be inviting 100 of the older members of the village to a cream tea at the Henfield Haven on 17th June as part of their celebrations. Invitations will go out through local residential and care homes very soon. There will be more about the Lions centenary in a future issue of BN5.

ver a thousand people flocked to the village on Sunday 2 April to enjoy the second Piazza Italia on Tour event which took place again under blue skies and beautiful spring sunshine. The cars were just as spectacular (and noisy!) as ever with plenty of modern and vintage Italian models for the spectators to enjoy up close. It was a brilliant afternoon with a fantastic mix of great food, fun entertainment and of course the fabulous super cars. The shops, cafes and pubs

on Henfield High Street had created wonderful Italian themed window displays earlier in the week and this all added to the festival flavour on the day. An enormous thank you to all those who helped organise this wonderful community event, including volunteers who helped marshal, and those who took part to make it such a memorable day! or a marvellous day-out with a wildlife theme and a vintage twist, visit the Floral Fringe Fair 2017 which takes place at Knepp Castle in Shipley on the weekend of June 3rd and 4th from 10.30am to 5pm. The overall theme of the fair is our native wildlife and how to encourage it into the garden but the fair has grown and developed into much more than that. It is about everything that is quintessentially English and quirky; it’s about celebrating the outdoors, gardens and gardening; and it’s about talented craftspeople and artists of today as well as the craftspeople of a bygone era (represented by vintage stalls and classic cars). You can expect over 130 quality stalls hailing from Sussex, Surrey, Kent and Hampshire including specialist nurseries and experts on wildlife such as honeybees, insects, birds and bats. Many stallholders have actually made what they sell and so are able to talk with first hand knowledge and passion about their product. We also have many vintage stalls selling items made by craftspeople from the past. All of our stallholders are independent, small businesses and not many of them have card machine facilities so please remember to bring lots of cash to the fair. The fair is becoming something of a foodies favourite and there will be plenty of stalls selling a wide range of food including: gourmet fishfinger sandwiches with nori batter, freshly baked pizzas, vegetarian organic bhajis and pakoras, quiches, pies, cheeses, breads and smoked meat. If that doesn’t whet your appetite, what about 3 2 | B N 5 M A GA ZINE

fruit smoothies, coffee, teas, cakes, ice cream, chocolates, marshmallows or fudge? There are many picnic spots by the beautiful lake - why not bring your retro picnic basket and rug and buy all the ingredients for your picnic from the numerous street food stalls at the fair, or eat in our fabulous pop-up tearoom. Well-behaved dogs on leads positively welcomed and there will be several stalls selling delicious doggy treats, plus handmade collars and leads. On the Knepp Estate there are free-roaming cattle, sheep, ponies, geese and deer which may have young, so leads are essential for dogs at all times. Knepp Castle is the subject of an unusual and nationally important re-wilding project and there will be the chance to learn more about this at the fair. Wildlife safaris have recently been launched on the Estate and there is a well-equipped luxury campsite. The beautiful private gardens at Knepp Castle, designed by Georgia Langton, will be especially open during the fair. Entry is £6.50 per person, £1 for children under 14 and children under 4 free. If arriving in a classic or vintage pre-1975 vehicle, entry is £5.50 each for the first two occupants. Classic and vintage vehicles will have a specially allocated parking area. If arriving in such a vehicle, dressing in appropriate fashion is especially encouraged. Even if not arriving in a classic car, dressing in style is welcome! Jean Jackman

or some members of Henfield Theatre Company the opportunity to stage the classic musical ‘Oh What a Lovely War’ has very special significance. Their story goes back to the production of the 1969 musical film of the same name, produced by Richard Attenborough and shot, largely, on Brighton’s West Pier. Two of the actresses in the film, Jean Reeve and Lee Fyles, became life-long friends and still live in Henfield. Jean’s daughter, Helen met Lee’s son, Gary, because of their mums’ involvement with the filming and they subsequently married and also live in Henfield. Gary, Helen and Helen’s mum, Jean, are all members of the Henfield Theatre Company and it is very fitting to them and their friends that the next production will be the one which has had such an impact on all of their lives. Helen will be performing in the Henfield production and, no doubt, the others will be watching it with lumps in their throats. The stage show was conceived by Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East, London and first performed there in 1963. In this satirical, entertaining and sometimes hilarious musical, the events of The First World War are told through the medium of an end-of-the-pier show. The production takes the form of a series of songs and sketches, as if performed on a seaside pier, with every actor playing in the chorus of men and women from across Europe - the unknown soldiers, nurses, and ordinary people who suffered with dignity and humour - and then individually stepping forward to become characters from the history of The Great War.

01273 494002

Items of factual information are periodically shown on the stage to add context to the satire being portrayed. The songs are either from the time of the Great War or parodied from songs of that period and it can be surprising to those who haven’t already seen the film or the show how many of them are very familiar. The facts about the conflict, displayed on the stage, are still hard to believe, even for those who have seen it multiple times. While ‘Oh What a Lovely War’ is of particular significance to Henfield Theatre Company, most importantly it is a masterpiece of theatre and a fitting tribute to the victims of ‘the war to end all wars’ which was in progress exactly 100 years ago. The Henfield production team is very strong with experienced and talented people in the key roles; Peter Ingledew is director, musical direction is by David Barnett and the choreographer is Alice Forward. Martin Love ‘Oh what a lovely war’ will be performed from Wednesday 17 to Saturday 20 May at The Henfield Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets (priced £10 and £12) are available from the Box Office at Henfield Furnishings on Henfield High Street (01273 490080), from Tuesday 2 May. The production is sponsored by Marcus Grimes Estate Agents. Henfield Museum will be open before curtain up and during the interval with a special display covering Henfield’s participation in the First World War. THE HENFIELD HALL

NEEDS

YOU! A

fter years of hard work and fundraising by the local community, the Henfield Hall was officially opened in November 1974. Now, nearly 43 years later it is in need of a major refurbishment and redecoration and for this to happen, once again it needs the support of the village. A quick roll-call of the different occasions I have attended at the Henfield Hall over the past few years demonstrates how crucial it is to a vibrant village life: theatre performances, film showings, parties, mother and toddler groups, art exhibitions, school trips, blood donation sessions, polling station, charity fundraisers, exercise classes, community meetings, celebrations and evening classes – just some of the many and varied educational, social, cultural and wellbeing events which the Henfield Hall facilitates. The Hall, which is a registered charity managed by a group of volunteer trustees, receives no external funding and relies solely upon the income produced by letting out the hall and the garden room, as well as limited fundraising activities. In order to provide an affordable venue for the noncommercial clubs and organisations that rely on it, the fees charged by the Henfield Hall are

01273 494002

deliberately modest. Some commercial activities use the hall facilities, as does the Parish Council and the Village Museum, and these provide much needed income but this is limited as the primary function is to provide and be available for local clubs and organisations. Although regularly maintained, the Hall has not had a major revamp since it was built and this is now long overdue to ensure that it can continue to offer the modern and up-to-date facilities that the village needs. A two-year programme of redecoration and refurbishment has been put together and the trustees are extremely grateful to the group of volunteers who have agreed to help implement this and the group of local tradesmen who have also already pledged their help. The aim of the trustees is now to obtain sufficient support and funds to enable this to happen. If you are able to help the refurbishment project in any way, either through volunteering or fundraising, the Henfield Hall trustees would love to hear from you – please contact Peter Sheppard on 01273 491935. The Henfield Hall is the vital heart of our village - let’s keep it beating. Sarah Butler

Herbal help for Hay Fev er

Hay fever or allergic rhinitis is a form of allergy that affe cts the lining of the nose and ofte n the eyes and throat. As the name implies, the condition is an allergic response to the pol len of certain grasses, but the term is also used to describe sim ilar reactions to a wide range of pollens and the spores of some fungi.

Anyone that suffers from hay fever will understand what a debilitating conditio n it can be during the summer months, especiall y when we naturally want to spend more time outd oors. Herbs can be particularly effective for hay fever and the ones that are most useful, also happen to be common at this time of year (a sign perhaps that nature seems to know what we need when we need it!) Nettle One of the most beneficial uses of nettle leaf is treating hay fever. Histamin e is produced by your body in response to aller gens and nasal congestion, sneezing and irritated watery eyes are a result of the release of this inflammatory compound. Nettle is a sour ce of quercetin which is a flavonoid that redu ces the release of histamine. In one study, mor e than half of allergy sufferers rated nettle to be an effective herbal remedy for hay fever and asso ciated allergic symptoms. The dried herb seems to be most effective.*

*Helms S, Miller A. Natural treatment of chronic rhinos inusitis. Altern Med Rev. 2006 Sept;11(3): 196-207. Source: Stinging nettle | Unive rsity of Maryland Medical Center http:// umm.edu/health/medical/altm ed/herb/stinging-nettle#ixz z3c6TyKi00

Elderflower In herbal medicine, elderflow ers are used in any catarrhal inflammation of the upper respiratory tract and are especially ben eficial in hay fever. Taken early in the year, elde rflowers strengthen the upper respiratory tract before the pollen count rises. The action of elderflow ers in the upper

respiratory system is furth er enhanced by its antiinflammatory action. A cold , strained infusion of the flowers is a soothing remedy for inflamed eyes. Peppermint Like nettle leaf, extracts from peppermint leaves may inhibit histamine relea se, which suggests its use in hay fever. It also help s clear blocked sinuses and dries up excess mucous in the nasal passages. Peppermint oil can be used in a vaporiser or a few drops put on a tissue to inha le.

Eyebright As the name suggests, eyeb right is used to treat eye irritation and inflammatio n, and is particularly beneficial for sore, itchy eyes which may have a discharge. It can be app lied as a compress or eyewash or taken internally as an infused tea. It’s anti-inflammatory and antic atarrhal action makes it useful in soothing sore nasa l passages and strengthening the membran es of the respiratory tract.

In addition, try and eat plen ty of garlic, chilli, ginger, onions as these are all muc olytic foods. These help thin the mucus, improving drainage of mucus from the sinuses.

Review of the Budget

he Chancellor delivered his final March Budget last month, having already published 500 pages of legislation which was previously announced and will now become law. Maybe there is little else to attack as the Budget was generally very tame. Hoped-for concessions on business rates, particularly for retailers and others in the South did not materialise, with only minor tinkering for small businesses and pubs. The Government is still confused as to whether it wishes people to trade as self-employed or via limited companies and this confusion will continue until a review happens later in the year. Last year’s £5,000 dividend allowance is already being reduced to £2,000 from 2018. None of this is likely to change the behaviour of entrepreneurs, who look at the commercial considerations of how they conduct their business. The fiscal forecasts were positive, with growth expected to exceed targets and borrowing expected to be lower than previously predicted. In normal circumstances, the Chancellor would have looked to reduce taxation and increase spending. But Brexit has changed the rules of the game, so any windfalls are being kept in reserve to “Brexit-proof” the economy. The last Spring Budget has gone not with a bang but a whimper. Corporate and Business Tax - As far as corporate and business tax is concerned, the most significant measures – the cap on interest relief for corporate borrowing and the changes to the Corporation Tax loss regime – were those that had already been announced. No change was announced to the downward trajectory of Corporation Tax rates, although the cost of these to the Exchequer will be mitigated somewhat by the changes referred to above. The Chancellor announced that the introduction of quarterly reporting under the Making Tax Digital regime will be delayed by one year for businesses with turnover below the VAT threshold, currently £83,000, meaning these small businesses will not begin quarterly reporting until April 2019. Delaying quarterly reporting for some businesses is a welcome outcome and will allow more time for some businesses to prepare. Many unincorporated businesses will still, however, come into the regime from next April. The Chancellor has announced that the threshold for unincorporated businesses to use cash accounting will increase to £150,000. This regime will also be extended to unincorporated landlords, and there will be various further simplifications to the rules for tax deductible expenditure. These measures will be welcomed by a number of selfemployed individuals, partnership businesses, and those with rental portfolios from 6 April 2017, and may make the

introduction of Making Tax Digital slightly less burdensome. VAT - From 1 April, the threshold above which businesses are required to be VAT registered will rise from £83,000 to £85,000, with the de-registration threshold rising from £81,000 to £83,000 Businesses that are close to the limit, but not VAT registered, should monitor their sales on a monthly basis, so that when they are liable to be registered they apply on time and do not incur unnecessary penalties. VAT Flat Rate Scheme - From 1 April there will be a new (higher) VAT flat rate of 16.5% for “businesses with limited costs”. Currently, businesses determine which flat rate percentage to use by reference to their trade sector. From 1 April, however, they must also determine whether they meet the definition of a limited cost trader, which will be one whose costs of goods is one of the following: zero, less than 2% of turnover; or less than £1,000 per year. Property Tax - For the first time in many years, we had a Budget which did not specifically target the property sector. Hoped-for changes to the SDLT regime and changes to the rates regime did not materialise. However for those involved in infrastructure projects, there will be further funding for roads, schools, hospitals and the care home sector. A further £435 million transitional relief is to be made available to provide further support to businesses facing significant increases in rates bills from April. There are three main changes: the increase for small businesses losing Small Business Rate Relief will be capped at £600 a year, a £1,000 business rate discount for pubs with a rateable value of up to £100,000, and providing English local authorities with a fund of £300 million to support individual hardship cases in their local area. While any relief is welcome, the support announced does not address the major concerns raised by occupiers of offices and retailers in London and the South East who are facing huge increases in their rates bills as a result of the rise in property values in the region. And so the last ever Spring Budget is behind us – no more March Budgets – we look forward (!) to the Chancellor’s Budgets being in late November/early December. Their content may receive a reception to match the weather – chilly!
