Our cover this month shows St Peter’s school year-six pupil Milo Gardiner as he takes part in his Sport Relief challenge - four hours of continuous basketball. The fundraiser was all Milo’s own idea, he raised a magnificent £450 for the charity and we think his dedication and determination is fantastic. Well done Milo, a great effort. On the theme of sport and fitness, Sarah met Breeze Bike champion Victoria Pope as she embarks on her one-woman mission to get the ladies of the village on their bikes. If your bike has been rusting away with flat tyres in the shed don’t despair - Vic is the girl for you. She can also give your bike a quick once-over to get you up and running ready for one of her rides through the local countryside. Sorry chaps, you’ll have to set up your own group - no sweaty men in lycra allowed! I was fortunate to meet Mr Ismaila Cham, headteacher of a primary school in The Gambia, at Ashurst School last month. It was fascinating to hear about the global partnership between Ismaila’s school Kotukala, Ashurst Primary and other schools in the area. The partnership is an interesting example of a collaboration between two schools which on paper seem worlds apart, but have plenty to share as they educate the future generations ready for a changing world. News | MAY 2012 Play cricket at Poynings Poynings Cricket Club is looking for new playing members for the coming season. The Club plays in the top division of the Mid-Sussex League on Saturdays and has a full fixture list against local and touring sides on Sunday afternoons and summer weekdays. It also competes in the Henfield 20/20 competition and in the National Village Cup so there is plenty of opportunity for players of all ages and abilities to participate. The Club is based in Poynings and plays in a beautiful rural location at the foot of the South Downs. We pride ourselves on retaining all the traditional values associated with village cricket and although we take our cricket seriously, we still find time to enjoy ourselves (particularly after matches!). We also enjoy (probably) the best cricket teas in Sussex! There is a full social programme in which everyone is encouraged to take part and each year we go on Tour, sometimes to exotic locations - this July we’re going to the West Country! In the Pink BALL The Green Man in Partridge Green will hosting its annual ‘In the Pink Ball’ to raise money for Breast Cancer Care and the Olive Tree Hospice in Crawley on Saturday 7 July. The ball is a black tie and gown event and will feature a champagne and Pimms canapé reception, as well as a sumptuous four course dinner. The fantastic Fug Band will be providing the live music for the evening and there will also be a grand auction and a lucky dip tombola. The ticket price is a minimum donation of £85 and guests will be seated on tables of 12. Becky Illes, co-owner of the Green Man, is hoping to raise £100,000 for the two charities over the next six years. Starting on 1 May Henfield traders will begin decorating their windows for the Diamond Jubilee Henfield Enterprise competition. There will be three categories: Best use of space; Best theme; and Best colour. The windows will be judged during May by Nigel Fitzsimmons, Town Centres Officer for Horsham District Council, and the results will be announced during the Jubilee Weekend. Writing this the day before the hosepipe ban comes into effect we have to hope that this year the weather will be kind to us and our gardens, with just the right amount of both sunshine and rain (the latter preferably only at night and certainly not during the Jubilee or Gardens and Arts weekends - a repeat of last years ‘Soaking Sunday’ would not be welcome!) Our winter lectures have now finished until October and we are looking forward to lots of car and coach outings, a holiday in Ironbridge, Shropshire, our Plant Swap during Henfield’s Gardens and Arts weekend in June and various social events. Look out for details of the ‘Jubilee Garden’ which we are renovating and planting in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee. Although Southern Water is the water company directly responsible for water in the Horsham District, Horsham District Council will be working with parish councils to identify vulnerable people in the towns and parishes and help where public health is involved. The Sussex Adverse Weather Framework will be activated in response to drought conditions based on advice from the Environment Agency. Horsham District Council will only use recycled water in cleansing, watering plants and in public water features and fountains, use drought resistant plants and ensure water is used wisely in Council offices and buildings.
PART-TIME LITTER WARDEN AND CLEANER VACANCY
Henfield Parish Council is seeking to recruit a part time Litter Warden and Cleaner. Working on average four hours per week this post would suit a retired person. This is physical work and the duties would include operating a hand-pushed mechanical pavement cleaner but the work time is flexible. News | MAY 2012 Jill Haynes, 1944-2012 Friends, family and those associated with the 777 fundraising event for Clic Sargent and Henfield Leisure Centre were shocked and saddened by the death of Jill Haynes, mum to Tracey, Sammy and Martin. Jill, whose bubbly personality and ready laugh kept the team on track during their fundraising runs at the end of March, passed away suddenly at her home in Partridge Green on Good Friday, 6 April. Jill moved to the area in 1994 to be near her daughters. She raised her family with husband Gerald (who passed away in 2008) in Surrey. A talented seamstress with a strong artistic and creative streak, Jill loved nothing better than creating beautiful gifts for family and friends. More recently she made quilts, beadwork and jewellery for the 777 fundraising effort for cherished grandson Ashton, who is continuing his battle with Leukemia. Jill was at the centre of her family, with three children and seven adored grandchildren. She had one brother and seven sisters, including her closest sister, Shirley. She was immensely proud of the achievements of her
children and grandchildren and in turn they adored her, not a day would go past without a call or a visit to Jill. 777 runners Donna Stephenson and Tim Jones ran the Brighton Marathon in Jill’s memory on 15 April, with “This one’s for you, Jill,� written on their shirts. The team became very close to Jill, she became ‘like a mum’ to the runners during the event. A lady with a big heart and a big smile, she will be sadly missed by all who knew her. By the time you read this article the appearance of the Wantley roundabout should have been improved by the addition of a display of plants and flowers. For many years Council has been seeking to visually improve this roundabout and has now been able to take advantage of a recent opportunity by providing the planters which contain the displays. In addition, there will be extra floral displays in the High Street all of which will be watered from recycled rain water gathered by the Nursery maintaining these displays. Henfield Parish Council has also purchased a mechanical pavement vacuum which is being used to good effect in the High Street and surrounding area hoovering up the debris and cigarette ends which our Litter Wardens are unable to pick up. Council hopes its effects to make the village centre more attractive will encourage both residents and visitors to shop in Henfield and support our local hard-pressed businesses.

News | MAY 2012 Summer Barn Dance 2012 The Henfield Summer Barn Dance is back! After the success of last years’ event, St Peters School PTA and The Henfield BP Guild have decided to join forces again. So gather your family, friends and neighbours together, have some fun and help raise funds for two local causes. The Barn Dance takes place on Saturday 26 May at The Henfield Hall. The fun will start at 7.30pm, when The Blue Pilchards band will set the ball rolling. If you missed out last year or you’ve never enjoyed a barn dance before, no experience is necessary - the bands’ caller will take everyone through the moves or you may prefer to simply sit and watch the fun! Part way through the evening there will be a break for a ploughman’s meal (included in the ticket price). This is an event for all ages and an excuse for a good get together and summer celebration, whilst raising funds for two local charities. The BP Guild support various good causes in Henfield including the Senior Citizens, Scouts, Guides and other local charities. St Peter’s School PTA raise funds to support the school. The money they raise helps pay for books, equipment, educational school trips, sessions at the leisure centre and play equipment for the school playground. Advanced tickets will available at a reduced price of £12.50 for adults and £5 for children under 12 years. Tickets on the door will be £15 for adults and £5 for children. HENFIELD FC CHAMPIONS AGAIN
Henfield FC U14's have secured their second championship in three years after winning their league and securing promotion to the top division. Travelling to second placed East Grinstead for the final league game of the season the team produced an outstanding performance that saw them end the season in style with a 4-0 victory. The performance was of such high quality that they were applauded off the pitch at the end of the game and the opposition manager and chairman both praised the Henfield team as being, “outstanding and totally unplayable”. The U14's have enjoyed a superb season which also included an excellent cup run (beating two 'A' League sides along the way) which took them all the way to the semi-finals. Here they finally succumbed to a very strong Billingshurst side in a hard-fought match. Manager Paul Samrah had nothing but praise for the side following yet another season that ended as Champions stating that: “Some of the football the team has played this year has been of the very highest quality and they thoroughly deserve to win the league”. Coach, Darren Angood added: “The underlying factor that has seen this team continue to improve is a unity amongst the players, a dogged determination to work hard in matches and training and a fitness level that has been unmatched in this division. It has been a pleasure to coach this team who are always willing to listen and learn and take what they have been coached in training into a match situation with hugely gratifying results”. MAY 2012 | News St Barnabas hospice My husband and I recently had the privilege of touring St Barnabas House in Durrington. It was with some trepidation I walked through the door as I was afraid of what I may see and how it may affect me. However after an in-depth tour of bright and airy rooms filled with natural light, seeing the incredible state-of-the-art equipment and meeting the staff (both paid and voluntary) who tend St Barnabas with such love and deep care, I found myself to be in awe of St Barnabas House. St Barnabas has resident patients, day patients, respite care and services that extend into our community. They recognise the needs of all who pass through the door be they medical, physical or emotional. The Hospice costs in excess of £4 million pounds a year to run. A small percentage of this comes from Government grants but the bulk needs to be raised locally. The Henfield Friends of St Barnabas group meet bimonthly to organize fundraising events. Henfield is an incredibly generous village and last year we were able to forward in excess of £11,000 to St Barnabas. We would also like to thank the local businesses and organisations who support us by selling tickets, donating and allowing us to use their halls. Our AGM is on 3 May in the Free Church hall 7.30pm. Henfield Jubilee Celebrations It’s nearly time to celebrate a rare event - the Queens Diamond Jubilee! Look out for a free souvenir programme of festivities available from mid May in Stokes, Jasmines, design-copy-print and other High Street outlets. On Saturday 2 June at 11am (the anniversary of Coronation Day) we will unveil the commemorative hanging baskets post near Barclays Bank, High Street with fanfare. On Sunday 3 June at 3pm a Service of Thanksgiving for the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen will be held at St Peter’s Church, Henfield. The preacher will be the Venerable Roger Combes, Archdeacon of Horsham and everyone is welcome. On Sunday 3 June there will be ‘Proms in the Park’ at Red Oaks featuring the local brass band Brass Fusion and Henfield resident and Royal Opera star Sidonie Winter. There will be a Pimm’s tent, plus shelter in case of adverse weather. There will be a retiring collection. News | MAY 2012 MILO’S SPoRT RELIEF TRIUMPH ECG machine atthe Henfield Congratulations to year 6 pupil Milo Gardiner (pic- Medical Centre tured on our cover) from St Peter’s Primary School who singlehandedly raised ÂŁ450 for Sport Relief during his sponsored four-hour basketball challenge. Milo, who plays for Brighton Cougars, had the idea for the challenge and approached Mr Philips, Headteacher, with his plan. “I saw a programme showing how some children don’t have clean water and I wanted to do something. I like basketball so I knew I could do it,â€? said Milo. He started playing basketball when teacher Mr Benyon introduced the sport to the class in year 3. The challenge, which took place in the school playground, involved 4 hours of continuous play and shooting. His classmates cheered on his efforts during breaktimes and celebrated his success by carrying the exhausted Milo on their shoulders after the four hour challenge.
GPs and staff at Henfield Medical Centre would like to thank the Friends of Henfield Medical Practice Trust for their recent fund raising campaign to raise money for a new ECG machine. Through events involving both friends and staff and through donations from patients and local bodies, (including the Kindersley Trust, Henfield Parish Council and the WI), a total of £2,315 has been raised towards the total cost of £3,400. The balance of the total cost will be met from Friends existing funds. It is still not too late for you to contribute - see the contact details on the Friends website or ask at reception for a Gift Aid form. The new ECG machine can be connected to consulting room computers and the ECG trace is monitored on the computer screen, giving an indication of the quality of the signal from every cable to ensure the best possible reading. The machine automatically files a high quality reading directly into the patient’s medical records at the end of the test, and this ECG report can be seen and read from any consulting room. The new equipment also enables practice staff to send a clear report electronically directly to the hospital for reading and analysis.

World Record Breakers It's official - St Peter's Primary School's attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most simultaneous games of conkers was successful! Our new record (which was set on 5 November) is 276 simultaneous games which involved 553 participants. What started out as a bit of fun soon became a lot more complicated: Firstly there was the collecting, drilling and stringing of 2,000 conkers (thanks to all those who helped with this task), next there was complying with the rules of the attempt (thanks to all the marshals, witnesses and video recorders) and finally there was actually getting enough people to take part! We are very pleased that all the effort involved wasn’t in vain.

Henfield Tennis Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Jӧrg Schlßter to the new post of Head Coach with effect from 16 April. This position has been created to help the club to expand its membership, develop a more comprehensive tennis programme and improve all aspects of junior and adult tennis. Jӧrg is a LTA Licenced Coach (Level 3), and since last autumn has been running minitennis coaching at the Leisure Centre for children under 10. He has lived in Henfield for the last 17 years and is established as a local Financial Advisor and Stockbroker. He is married with two children, one of whom is a pupil at St Peter’s School. In addition to tennis, Jӧrg has also coached judo and table tennis. Jӧrg will be starting a coaching programme for juniors from mid-April based on mini-tennis which is the internationally approved method of teaching those aged 12 and under. Sessions to attract new members, or those who haven’t played for some time are under consideration, together with cardio- tennis (a workout that is tennis based but attractive to all ages, whether or not tennis players). Jӧrg plans to be around the club over the coming weeks as much as he can in order to meet members and anyone interesting in joining the club. LANDSCAPING AWARD SUCCESS FOR GARDEN ART DESIGNS
Henfield based Sue McLaughlin of Garden Art Designs has won a prestigious APL award in recognition of her high quality landscaping work at the annual Association of Professional Landscapers Awards ceremony. They received the highest accolade in the Overall Design and Build category for their Grovelands project. The winning entry saw the creation of a new garden to complement a large house and barn extension, linking the old style with the new. The garden included a contemporary planting style, a children’s play area, a new

swimming pool, vegetable garden, natural pond and wild flower meadow, along with large entertaining spaces. The judges commented: “The garden was very accomplished and holds together really well, picking up on the details of the house. The space works really well with bold sweeps, strong design around the swimming pool and intricate planting plans.” Commenting on her success, Sue from Garden Art Designs said, "It is a huge honour to be recognised at the prestigious APL awards. I am grateful to the clients who put there trust in me and gave Sue McLaughlin, Garden Art Designs, the opportunity to deliver the project. If there is anything remotely close to frenetic activity in sleepy Henfield, then it is surely taking place in gardens at this very moment. Gardeners are preparing for the June Gardens and Arts weekend and it’s hard work! Much has to be completed to maintain the outstanding displays of previous years. Shrubs are being tweaked, perennials have been split and roses meticulously pruned and this is all building up to a massive gardening extravaganza that is an ever-present part of the Henfield diary. If Gertrude Jekyll ever bothered to stir in her grave it would be with pleasure over the gardens on our list! From modern and minimal planting to old-fashioned favourites, we have a diversity of gardens on offer. Visitors to the twenty-plus gardens will inevitably pick up some valuable tips, enjoy a good grouse at gardens they don’t like and perhaps contemplate it could be them that will show off their floral displays next year. As a huge bonus the gardens will also be the venues for magnificent art displays, musical performances and many will also provide delicious afternoon teas and cakes - can you think of a better way of spending a June afternoon? Budgens supermarket have announced increased financial support for Henfield through a new project with Henfield Community Partnership (HCP). From the launch on Monday 30 April the Budgens Community Notice-board will be managed by HCP volunteers, with all the profits being passed to HCP for local Henfield projects, such as Henfield Youth Club. So, from 30 April if you want to place an advert or poster on the Budgens Community Noticeboard, then you just need to hand it to the Budgens ‘Kiosk’ till together with any weekly fee due. Each Monday HCP volunteers will then put up the new adverts and posters in the first (and best) space available. Only cards or posters placed at the Kiosk will remain up after 30 April to ensure both tidiness and a local focus. And remember, all profits from the small weekly charges (for example, 50p per week for a postcard) will be going directly to help Henfield charities. However, truly local charity events can continue to advertise events free for up to two weeks – just hand them in at the Budgens kiosk. Sports Relief ‘Bake Sale’ On Saturday 24 March, Freya Woodward and Lydia Rodway, pupils at St Peters School held their Sports Relief ‘Bake Sale’. They baked nearly all of their own cakes, which included Chocolate Fudge Cake, Toffee and Walnut Cake, Flapjacks and Razzle Dazzle biscuits. Their younger sisters (Kirsten Woodward and Leonie Rodway) also joined in by making Teddy Bear Biscuits. It was a glorious day and the stall was very busy. They raised a well deserved £100 which will be donated to Sports Relief 2012. Well done girls!
FULKING VILLAGE HALL
Fulking villagers are fighting to save their village hall from closure. This historic hall was built over 100 years ago on land donated by a villager to the rector. It is the only public meeting space in this small village and for decades it has been the focus of the community for clubs, plays, talks and parties. In the 1990s it was rented from the Church by a nursery school and became cluttered with toys. With the departure of the nursery in 2011, the hall was very underused and falling into disrepair. The Church proposed closing it permanently and it seemed likely that the land would be sold. Villagers quickly rallied round to find funds to pay the running costs and the hall is now firmly back as a focus of the community, with a youth club, mother-and-toddler group, games evenings, yoga and other classes held regularly. One-off events are also planned – the first is Seedling Sunday (15 April from 2-5 pm) with seedlings of all kinds and light refreshments available. Repairs and redecoration are underway and the hall has a smart look inside with new curtains and a shiny polished floor! The hall is also available for use by local groups beyond Fulking. MAY 2012 | News help THE tsunami survivors A recent article by Yumiko Ono in the Wall Street Journal told the story of the Yarn Alive Club (Keito Iki-iki) which meets every Tuesday in the tsunami-ravaged fishing village of Shichigahama. Its members have learned to knit and crochet and whilst they knit, for a moment they can put the memories of that terrible day just over a year ago to one side. They have made new friends, learned new skills and have a purpose in their work as they knit and crochet blankets to keep themselves warm. As one 80 year old said “It cheers me up so much that I don’t even feel lonely at night I just feel like knitting some more�. My sister and I both knit and crochet and we were shocked to read this moving article so we have decided to collect your unwanted balls of wool, knitting needles and crochet hooks to donate to the Yarn Alive Club. Henfield’syoungest referee Max Yearwood, aged 14, recently qualified as an Official FA Referee after completing his course and six-match assessment with the Sussex County Referees Association, attaining one of the highest pass-marks in his group. Max, who is ex Henfield FC, is now qualified to officiate in matches in age groups U11-U15, and is currently appointed for the Horsham District Youth Football and Sussex Sunday Youth Leagues. At a recent Referees Association function at Hove Town Hall, Max was privileged to meet and talk with 2010 World Cup Final, Champions League Final and the Premier League’s top referee, Howard Webb. Max is pictured with Howard Webb and with the Sussex Country Officials during his recent awards evening. Cycling? It’s a Breeze...
ocal Breeze champion Victoria Pope organises free weekly social bike rides for women to explore the beautiful countryside around Henfield. We joined Victoria one glorious spring morning for an eight-mile ride.
The Sunday Breeze ride meets most Sundays at 10am outside Victoria House at the foot of Sandy Lane. Designed for beginner to intermediate riders, Victoria plans a different route each week, mostly on bridleways and quiet country lanes. Victoria has been passionate about cycling all her life: “I love the freedom and fitness that cycling gives you. I’m really excited about building up a cycling community in Henfield where women can meet and venture out together in our fabulous countryside”. We met on the most perfect spring morning - the wild cherry and blackthorn were in full bloom and two buzzards were circling lazily overhead. After quick introductions we set off along the Downs Link northwards at a steady pace. Hollands Road was the first test of our cycling legs but once we got onto West End Lane it was gently downhill all the way to the Adur River. Once over the river we cycled up to the B2135 (the Steyning to Ashurst road) and crossed over into Spithandle Lane. From this point we cycled on tracks and quiet roads through the woods that form part of the Wiston Estate. The scenery was beautiful with dappled sunlight falling through the trees, birdsong all around and clumps of primroses and celandines by the side of the tracks. We even caught a glimpse of a woodpecker as it flew across our path. It was too early for bluebells, but we made a decision to come back in a few weeks for what promises to be an absolutely stunning display. The emphasis of the Sunday morning rides is very much social. “We ride at a speed that suits everyone and we often stop at a café for a drink and a chat” said Victoria. “Some cycling clubs can be very com-
petitive and full of lycra but we’re completely the opposite. If you haven’t been on your bike for years it’s a great way to get your confidence back.” Certainly we found everyone very friendly and chatty and the whole ride was very laid back and relaxing. After looping back to Spithandle lane we dropped down the to the River Adur where we watched the resident swans and were serenaded by skylarks. We followed the river’s lazy meander south to the bridge at Streatham Manor and rejoined the Downs Link. This was the busiest section of our ride with lots of families, joggers and dog walkers out enjoying the warm spring sunshine. We cycled north up to the Link back to our starting point at Victoria House for a wellearned rest, cup of tea and piece of cake! Breeze is a national programme from British Cycling that aims to get more women into cycling and feeling confident about going on bike rides. They train local Breeze champions who then organise free social bike rides. As well as the Sunday Breeze rides, Victoria also runs an intermediate level Adventure ride on the first Saturday of each month. These rides take in some hillier terrain, are between18 and 25 miles long and go at a much brisker pace. Victoria is also a fully qualified bicycle maintenance instructor and she offers fun but practical tutorials. As well as learning how to fix a puncture, you will also learn how to fix your brakes, what to do with a broken chain and generally how to keep your bike in good shape. If your bike has been out of action for a while, Victoria also offers bike servicing.

Friends of Steyning Grammar
S
teyning Grammar School has a fantastic Parent Teacher Association (PTA) which is an integral part of the school community. We are a registered charity and our primary aims are to raise funds to buy equipment and resources for the school, and to promote links between the school, parents and the local community.
We adopted the name Friends of Steyning Grammar School (or FoSGS which is less of a mouthful!) as it was recognised that anyone from the local community who wished to support the school could become a member – it is not limited to parents and staff. We have a large group of enthusiastic members from all walks of life who regularly turn up at our twicetermly meetings at The Russell Centre, Shooting Field. The meetings always include a ‘Parents Forum’ (which provides an opportunity to express opinions or raise questions on school community issues) as well as a report from the Head. About seven years ago we laid the foundations for the new look FoSGS by improving communications

with parents and staff, increasing membership and by bringing fundraising at Steyning Grammar School into the 21st century. Regular newsletters were introduced, committee members speak regularly at new parent’s evenings and pupils are actively encouraged to support fund raising events. Our committed and hard working team continue to make communication with all parents and staff their focus. Our fundraising continues to grow from strength to strength and, despite the recession, record amounts of money are being raised each year. All school budgets are increasingly under pressure and Steyning Grammar School is no exception. FoSGS has a neverending request list from staff for desperately needed equipment to enhance the pupils school life and quality of learning. To date we have donated thousands of pounds to the School. Equipment purchased includes: animation equipment, sports team kit, computers, books, samba band equipment, PA equipment, language head phones, green car equipment, musical instruments, drama masks and special needs equipment. We have recently provided enough funds for the PE department to purchase 10 netbooks to assist pupils studying BTEC, GCSE and A-Level PE. The music department has also recently benefitted from our fundraising with the purchase of 10 audio-interfaces which enhance music learning. Our two main fundraising events of the year are the annual Plant Sale and the annual Winter Fair. The annual Plant Sale (that has been so well supported so well over the years by locals looking to purchase the quality plants kindly provided by Chas Hammond from Spithandle Nurseries), has doubled its capacity thanks to FoSGS encouraging green-fingered members to donate home-grown plants and cuttings. This year’s Plant Sale will be held on Saturday 5 May from 9am to 12pm at Steyning Grammar School

Our famous Winter Fair that had been held at the school for well over 20 years received a new look in 2011 and was relocated to its new home at Shooting Field to accommodate its huge expansion. It was a fantastic success and we raised in excess of ÂŁ6,000! The Winter Fair is a great day out with lots of outside traders selling a huge variety of things, a grand draw, amazing auction, yummy refreshments and musical entertainment throughout the day. It’s a great way to get some early Christmas shopping done in a relaxing environment, whilst supporting local crafts people and the school. If you wish to have a stall at the 2012 Winter Fair (being held on Saturday 24 November from 10am to 4pm), please get in touch early to guarantee your space. As well as our traditional fundraising events we are also looking to exploit as many other means of fundraising as possible, such as sponsorship and the online ‘spend and raise’ e-store scheme. A friendship across continents
A
t a glance, a small, rural primary school of 60 children in the middle of the beautiful green Sussex countryside may not have very much in common with a school in The Gambia of 204 pupils. For a start, the climate is very different and the opportunities open to the children after their educational journey vary massively. But Mr Ismaila Cham and Mrs Janet Williams, headteachers of The Kotukala School and Ashurst Primary School, tell a different story – a story of a friendship between the schools that is long and deep, and a mutual understanding which greatly benefits both organisations.
The story of the partnership goes back to 2001 when Ashurst School teacher Beverley Mustchin stumbled across the beginnings of the Kotukala school when on holiday in The Gambia with her husband David. After asking a tour guide to take them to see a school she discovered three classrooms, constructed from corrugated metal and tarpaulins strung from trees. A group of enthusiastic children were gathered, keen to learn from their passionate teacher, Mr Ismaila Cham. As a teacher Beverley was inspired by this scene and she wanted to help. She returned to Ashurst with stories of the school under the tree and a determination to help give these children a life-changing education. However, she could never imagine just how much this chance visit would influence the future of the school. Now, 11 years later, the school has purpose-built classrooms in an enclosed compound, flushing toilets, running water, computers and seven qualified teachers. The man at the centre of the story, Ismaila Cham, has a personality that has carried the school from a handful of children in 1994 to the professional and caring educational environment that Kotukala now boasts. It
has now become a centre of excellence in the Gambia and a blueprint for other schools to follow. Most children in the Gambia start their education aged eight, whereas the Kotukala school takes children from the age of three, giving them a real head-start. When I meet with Ismaila, on his five-week visit to teach at Ashurst School as part of the Global Partnership of Schools, I am struck once again by the passion and gentle determination of the man. This is his second visit to the UK – during the first visit in 2008 he made such a lasting impression on pupils at Ashurst that many of them came back to visit him this year, having left for secondary schools across the county. He is an inspiring teacher and although he is softly spoken, his open arms and gentle kindness strikes a cord with the children of all ages. My two boys, pupils at Ashurst at the time, still treasure the beaded necklaces he brought for each child on his last visit – each was lovingly handmade by Ismaila’s sisters. Ismaila has a passion to teach. When he first set up the school in 1994 he travelled door-to-door to encourage parents to send their children to his school under the tree in the compound of his parents’ house. He gradually added desks and chairs, accepting gifts of pens and papers from tourists visiting the area. To pay for a teaching course Ismaila chopped wood and sold vegetables. He is currently attending teachertraining college in The Gambia to study for further exams to enable him to expand the school to older age-groups. Describing the links between the two schools Janet Williams, who paid a special visit to Kotukala to teach in 2008, explains that the relationship is mutually beneficial. “The partnership has brought us more than

The children at Ashurst have developed strong friendships with Kotukala and we are proud to have been the first school in this particular global partnership. As a Christian school, these values of nurturing, understanding and friendship are exactly what we believe in.” The partnership now involves schools across Sussex, Surrey and Kent, including Jolesfield in Partridge Green, Steyning Grammar, Upper Beeding, St Peter’s Henfield, Steyning Primary, The Towers Convent and Shoreham College. The Gambian Education Trust was set up by Beverley and David Mustchin and serves as the backbone of communication with the school, as well as the fundraising base for the growth of the successful school. The Trust has plans for further classrooms, as well as school library facilities and the expansion of the school to encompass older children. Kotukala and Ashurst are inextricably linked. Walking along the corridors at Ashurst you will find African drums and artwork, gifts from Kotukala, letters and photographs from the children exchanging their experiences and hopes for the future, and pictures of headteacher Mrs Williams on her visit to the school. RED OAKS Celebrating life through a quality care home
‘The Apprentice’ comes to Henfield To support National Apprenticeships Week on 6-10 February, Red Oaks staff took part in an ‘Apprentice’ style challenge. Two teams of four staff (all of whom are studying for a variety of NVQ qualifications) were given just over a week and £20 to make and sell as many cakes and cookies as possible to raise money for St Barnabas Hospice. The two teams, ‘Smart Cookies’ and ‘3 Puffs and a Pastry’, had to produce a business plan, source ingredients, create the packaging and market the finished products. Terry Tucker and Paul Middleton from Barchester Healthcare’s Learning and Development Team came down to do a boardroom ‘hiring and firing’ session. Despite employing two very different sales pitches, both teams did fantastically well and raised very similar amounts of money. In the end the Smart Cookies team (Mark Webb, Christine Harris, Janice Parsons and Sinead Dorman) were ‘hired’ and the 3 Puffs and a Pastry team (Martin Knight, Becky Mold, Jude Winston and Rosie Broucke) were ‘fired’. The total amount raised for St Barnabas Hospice by the two teams was an amazing £601 and Barchester Healthcare topped up this amount to £1,000.
The Red Oaks Apprentice Challenge helped Barchester Healthcare win an Edexcel competition ‘What did your company do for National Apprenticeship Week 2012?’ and it was cited as ‘embodying the spirit’ of National Apprenticeships Week.
Red Oaks share Easter goodwill On Easter Saturday Jackie Welch and Clare Mowatt from Red Oaks shared some Easter goodwill by giving away chocolates to the children of the village. With two large baskets each, Clare and Jackie invited passing children to ‘dip in’ and choose a chocolate egg or rabbit. After two hours on the High Street outside both Barclays Bank and Stokes all the chocolate had gone and there were lots of very happy children in the village!

Celebrating
H
ave you planned how your loved ones will celebrate your life and how you would like to be remembered? We are never too young to think about practical matters. Making sure our families know our wishes before anything happens can save a lot of worry for them at an already difficult time.
Writing a list can help to open a conversation with your family about your end of life wishes. This list could include things that you have loved about your life, things you may still want to do or things you may want to happen at the end of your life. When my Mum and Dad died just over a year ago I was so glad that we had spent time together laughing and joking about where they wanted their ashes scattered. Knowing their wishes helped me to overcome my own grief and remember the joyful times we had together. When we are fit and healthy we don’t often consider that our needs might change in later years. However none of us knows what is around the next corner and it’s worth thinking about potential issues. What if you need care? Do you want to stay at home? Who do you want with you as your end of life draws near? Will you need to live in a nursing home? Some people can lose the ability to make decisions for themselves through illness. By writing up an advanced
life and death
care plan you can clearly express your wishes, for example if you want to refuse specific treatments or resuscitation. A Lasting Power of Attorney (raised through a solicitor) gives your authority for a named persons/person to legally make decisions on your behalf. These decisions can be around looking after your property, affairs and/or your personal welfare. Less doom and gloom – why not organise a party with your family to make sure everyone knows what your wishes are for the future? Celebrate with those precious to you, agree how you would like your funeral arranged, write your own eulogy and remember the good times together - this is your celebration! LOOKING BACK AT THE 2012 BUDGET
A
s is usually the case this Budget was something of a curate’s egg! Headlines will no doubt focus on the increase in Personal Allowances, which will undoubtedly stimulate consumption to some extent, but the impact on our somewhat sluggish economy is harder to assess. It also does nothing to improve the lot of those already below the Income Tax threshold. The other headline grabber will be the resetting of the ‘50p top rate’ to 45p from next April. But whatever your political persuasion, you are unlikely to be satisfied with the outcome. A 5% reduction will hardly set entrepreneurial pulses racing, especially when they have to wait for a year. And for those who look to the tax system to redistribute wealth, 45p doesn’t seem like much of a redistribution! The anti-avoidance bandwagon rolls on, guns trained squarely on purchasers of high value property, with increases in stamp duty and provisions designed to make it prohibitively expensive to have your multi-million pound property purchased by a mysterious offshore company, thereafter never to trouble the Stamp Office. And so to some of the detail. The Chancellor has accelerated the programmed reduction in the headline rates of Corporation Tax. The previously announced rates for the financial years beginning on 1 April 2012 and 1 April 2013 and 2014 have been further reduced by 1% to 24%, 23%, and 22% respectively. The rates apply where taxable profits exceed £1,500,000. The small profits rate, which is charged on taxable profits of up to £300,000 remains unchanged at 20%. Profits in the band from £300,001 to £1,499,999 are charged at the full rate reduced by marginal relief. The thresholds are shared equally amongst ‘associated companies’ to prevent the exploitation of the lower rates by fragmenting businesses into a number of companies under common control. Given the reduction of 2% in the headline rate on 1 April 2012, where commercially possible, companies might consider realigning their accounting periods to straddle 1 April 2012. Much depends on how the profits fall. There may be other legitimate low-cost ways to defer the recognition of profits into a period covered by the reduced tax rate. Turning to Income Tax, there are no changes to the previously announced tax rates for 2012/13, so the 50% rate remains in place for next year. However from next April, the 50% rate will be reduced to 45% for those with taxable income over £150,000. The 50% rate is reported to have raised significantly less tax than originally expected, or hoped. Lower tax rates reduce the incentives to find avoidance routes and may increase the amount of tax actually collected. There are obvious planning considerations for those in this higher bracket to defer income until after 5 April 2013 or advance losses or other tax deductible outgoings before that, where possible. HMRC forecasts suggest they anticipate a forestalling
impact from this of more than £2 billion. There are no changes to the previously announced allowances for 2012/13. However, for 2013/14 a significant increase of £1,100 in the Personal Allowance is promised bringing this to £9,205 and the much-vaunted aim of a £10,000 allowance ever closer. As with the 2011/12 and 2012/13 increases in the allowance, there will be a compensating fall in the point at which the 40% tax band takes effect. However unlike the previous two years, higher rate taxpayers will still see some benefit although only 25% of the saving that basic rate taxpayers will enjoy. As a result anyone with income under £100,000 will see some benefit. Those with income a little over that will lose some or all of their allowance with a marginal rate band of 60% up to income of £118,410. For 2012/13 40% tax will apply to income over £42,475 and for 2013/14 to income over £41,450. The Coalition aim of a £10,000 Personal Allowance now looks a real possibility by the time of the next General Election. The increased Personal Allowance will give savings of £126 for 2012/13 and £220 for 2013/14, a modest if welcome boost for those at the lower end who actually fall in to the ever narrowing basic rate band. It is disappointing that the middle income earners will see only part of the benefit and with the reducing 40% rate threshold more and more taxpayers will find themselves falling in to the higher rate bracket. The higher age related Personal Allowances for those aged over 65 are to be frozen from the end of 2012/13. The allowances are £10,500 for those aged between 65 to 75 and £10,660 for those aged 75 and over. Eventually they will disappear completely once the main Personal Allowance catches up with the 2012/13 level. Anyone born after 5 April 1948 will not get the increased age allowance when they reach 65 and similarly anyone born after 5 April 1948 will not be entitled to the higher age related allowance. These higher allowances are already income dependent and start to phase out for anyone with income over £24,000 and are fully lost with income over about £29,000. The tax position of pensioners especially those at the lower end of the income spectrum is undeniably complicated. This will eventually prove simpler once the main Personal Allowance reaches the current higher age related allowance of £10,660, although at a cost to those with lower incomes. Those reaching 65 or 75 by 5 April 2013 will remain entitled to the 2012/13 level of allowance in future, but while this means nobody will lose out in cash terms some 4 million are expected to be worse off in real terms by an average of £83. As widely trailed what has until now been a universal benefit, child benefit will be clawed back for households where one (or both) of a couple have income in excess of £50,000. The threshold is higher than originally proposed and to avoid some of the ‘cliff edge’ effect there is a transitional band on income between

MAY 2012 | Business £50,000 and £60,000. Above that the full amount of any child benefit being received will be recovered. The actual amount of child benefit (normally paid to the mother) is unaffected. The clawback will be through an additional tax charge on the relevant high income individual. The new charge comes into effect from 7 January next year. Approximately 1.3 million families are affected with an average loss of £1,300 and with an extra 500,000 additional taxpayers being brought in to the self-assessment system. For those in receipt of child benefit with income in the £50,000 to £60,000 bracket this is effectively an additional tax charge that will vary according to the number of children for whom benefit is received. For a family with two children the clawback amounts to an extra 17.52% within the income band from £50,000 to £60,000. Sadly it does nothing for the cause of simplicity, with a start date part way through a Tax Year, yet another band of income with a differing marginal tax rate and more people burdened with the need to file a Tax Return. There is also no relief offered for single income couples for whom the extra charge will apply at £50,000 compared potentially to taking effect at up to £100,000 joint income for the two income couple. Whoever said tax was simple?
