The quintessentially British sound of the crack of leather striking willow has been ringing out on Henfield Common every summer for nearly 250 years. The historic Henfield Cricket Club, who are featured on the front cover this month, celebrate 250 years not-out in 2021 and, in the run-up to this impressive anniversary, it has plenty of exciting plans. The Club are particularly proud of their youth teams – the Colts. They field boys teams from under-9’s through to under-14’s and this year they are also hoping to field a girls team for the first time. They are always on the look-out for new players so do give this fantastically social team sport a try. This time of year is perfect for making plans for the gardening year ahead. Whatever the size of your garden, whether it’s a couple of window boxes or a bigger patch, Henfield Garden Club welcomes all garden enthusiasts. As well as talks from expert speakers throughout the winter months, they also have a packed schedule of outings, visits, picnics and teas during the summer months – they really are a social bunch! Read all about it on page 32. Finally, as we go to print, Horsham District Council confirmed that parking charges will go ahead for their Rural Car Parks from Monday 3 April. More information can be found on page 17. Best wishes

One of our local HART responders Sandra Parsons and the Hart team will be taking us through the operation of this vital lifesaving equipment which can be found at various locations in Henfield and the surrounding villages, including the pavilion down Blackstone Lane. We all would hope never to find ourselves needing to use a defib but they might one day help you save a life. They are user friendly, designed to be used in circumstances of great stress, but the extra bit of confidence gained from attending a training evening could make all the difference. The facility at Blackstone continues to provide a wonderful sports ground accessible to local people. Sussex County Cricket Clubs’ elite young cricketers, Blackstone Stoolball Club and the under 9s, 11s and under 12s of Henfield FC will be joined by Henfield Cricket Clubs’ third team this summer. They will be playing the majority of their home league matches at the venue on Saturday afternoons. Forthcoming fixtures are posted on the notice board at the gate. The Playing Field Committee holds its AGM at 6.30 pm on Monday 27th March when representatives from all the sports clubs who use the facility will be on hand if you want to find out more about getting involved in local sport. GRAND CANYON CHALLENGE Victoria Simpson grew up in Henfield, attending St Peter’s School followed by Burgess Hill School for Girls. She was baptised and confirmed at St Peter’s and for a time taught in the Sunday School. She studied medicine at the Royal Free Hospital in London where she qualified in molecular medicine and pathology. She then worked at the Princess Royal at Haywards Heath and after stints at other hospitals in the West Country and London, including Great Ormond Street, she eventually returned to the Royal Free as a consultant haematologist. In 2010 she became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists. Victoria married Dr James Stone, who had also studied at the Royal Free, in 2003 and they had three daughters. In August 2012 Victoria was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, ironically one of the illnesses she had been treating, and she sadly died in August 2015, aged just 43. In memory of Victoria, her mother Nicky, together with her friend Tricia, is planning to trek into the Grand Canyon in May. Initially it will be downhill all the way (the canyon is one mile deep). They will spend three nights camping and trekking at the bottom before climbing all the way up to the top again! The aim of the trek is to raise money for the charity ‘Bloodwise’, which funds research into all 137 types of blood cancer. The two trekkers are funding the challenge themselves, so every penny they raise will go to ‘Bloodwise’. They have set up a Just Giving page (www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/nickyandtriciasgrandcanyontrek ) and hope that friends in and around Henfield will feel able to support them. They will let you know how the challenge goes. If you prefer not to give online, you can send your donation to Nicky Simpson at Fernlea, West End Lane, Henfield BN5 9RA. Peter Bates

News | MARCH 2017 SPEEDING & ROAD SAFETY IN HENFIELD I was struck by the apparent divergence of approach between the Parish Council (Kevin Wright, page 12) and County Council (Lionel Barnard, page 15) on the subject of traffic and driving in and through Henfield in February’s BN5. The first challenges the anti-social, dangerous, illegal, anti-community, selfish, unkind aspects of the behaviour observed. The second shrugs the shoulders at something that’s inevitable, and worth the pain for the sake of the economy. It implies that any complaints are narrow minded and irrelevant, and abstracts the behaviour into something that no one is responsible for anyway. My heart sank, and so I suspect will have the collective hearts of the Parish Council. How unsupportive, flippant and careless of the ‘higher’ body! With friends like that... Those negatives are real and important and growing. But we’re not powerless victims. There are alternatives, to both the volume and speed of traffic, that won’t slow the economy, local or national, and that could improve all our lives. They’ll just take effort and energy to arrange, to communicate, and to gain commitment for, and a lot of active, determined collaboration

between councils across the area, at all levels, plus nurseries, schools, shops, churches, sports societies, employers, public transport providers, the police - and probably more. But it’d be worth it. If the County is feeling beaten already, or doesn’t see the need or the opportunities in the first place, then they should hand down the powers and budget to the people who do care, so that they can get on with the job. I for one would volunteer. Anyone else? Liz Cook, Henfield resident

RESPONSE FROM LIONEL BARNARD, WSCC I am really pleased to hear that local residents want to help me solve the problem of traffic using Henfield High Street. I am constantly on to the Highways department but I spend a great deal of time and energy chasing items that happen just outside the main villages, (I have four to look after). I regularly pass on all the complaints I get from them, mostly from parish councils. I have to ask why doesn’t the correspondent come to the CLC (on 1st March in Steyning, 7pm) and give voice to the problems she and other experience. I go and so do three other councillors and we are joined by the highways manager and other officers. Highways are often asked to give an

MARCH 2017 | News opinion. Unfortunately I see very few people from Henfield there. One of my priorities is road safety in the High Streets as I know how much it affects the local residents and businesses. Yet, how often do I see people ignoring the official southern crossing and using the road to get between Budgen’s and Jeremy’s, the greengrocers? I see this all the time and it is a constant danger. We need education around this very point, and maybe the locals, or BN5, can do this. It is known that about half the residents want traffic speeded up and about half want it slowed down. Some want no parking, others parking everywhere. Judgement is called for in meeting these demands and finding a solution that satisfies both, but with no survey taking place yet, saying what the residents would like to see happen. The County Council Highways will not fund a survey, but the locals can work on this. I am more than happy to help with a group that will actually do something. Cowfold’s properly formed group involved me and we managed to get the speed limits looked at and the police on board to stop irresponsible driving. At least the residents of Cowfold knew why things could or could not be done. We can do that in Henfield. There are no budgets to hand down to residents; unfortunately West Sussex County Council is in times of crisis and pulling back on everything. So I understand is the police. I know our highways people work hard on behalf of residents but unfortunately they too have budget restraints. I look forward to meeting Mrs Cook and her new wide group, one of her first jobs will be to determine what the residents suggest happens. Mrs Cook is right; we need to involve everyone in this. Last year we completed in a fun run and a half marathon, in aid of Chestnut Tree House. This year, we have booked a skydive to help raise funds for our local Church, St. Peter’s, Henfield. On Saturday 26th August 2017, five brave gentlemen will be taking part and launching themselves from a great height, in order to raise necessary funds for the Church’s new music and sound system. All monies raised, will be of great benefit, and appreciated by friends of St. Peter’s Church. BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT Did you know that there is a support group for bereaved people in Henfield? Held on the third Thursday of every month at

WORKPLACE Legal Solutions Your friendly local employment lawyer providing expert, practical advice for employers and HR

4.15pm at The Haven, the group is intended for people who have been working through their grief and feel they could benefit from social contact with other bereaved people. Each meeting lasts for one hour, so there is time for everyone who feels the need to share thoughts and feelings to do so, should they wish in an open and non-judgemental setting where no one will tell you what to do or think. You can participate or just sit and listen to others, whichever is best for you. The group is ‘open-ended’, meaning that you can come to as many meetings as you feel are helpful to you personally. You decide when to come and when to leave. It is intended to be an open discussion group with no set pattern for each session. The group is run by six volunteers who have all received appropriate training. There are usually two volunteers at each meeting and they operate on a rota system so you will get to know them all but will not see them at every meeting. The only rule is that everything said within the group is confidential and should not be repeated to anyone outside. Transport can be arranged if necessary. If you are interested in joining the group, please phone Louise in St. Peter’s Henfield Church Office on 01273 495532. Revd. Paul Doick PERSONAL ASSISTANT

Whilst frost is in the air and the green shoots of spring are still cowering under the cold ground, the days are nonetheless beginning to lengthen and the minds of all true cricketers are ceasing to dwell on the past and are instead turning towards all the successes that will undoubtedly come in 2017. Twineham and Wineham Cricket Club (TWCC) are a team of such incurables. TWCC is a team which may have slipped under the radar of some cricketing aficionados, but it is in such clubs as these that the origins and traditions of cricket are still to be found. TWCC have a direct line of descent from the very beginnings of the game, with Twineham on record as playing in a combined team with ‘Cowfold’ in 1798, with some notable cricketers of the time amongst their number. Much more recently, in 1892, Twineham combined with Wineham Cricket Club and they have not fallen out yet. The still beating heart of the traditional village game resides in such teams as TWCC, but although the pulse is strong, TWCC occasionally has difficulty in raising a full side of eleven players. This is not an uncommon problem in village clubs, but maybe there are, amongst readers of BN5, a few unaffiliated cricketers of any ability who would enjoy the odd friendly game. Young, old or simply in their prime like the rest of the team, TWCC would like to hear from anyone interested in joining

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT Please try to swap your grocery purchases to Fairtrade marked products wherever possible, especially during Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from Monday 27 February to Sunday 12 March. Fairtrade products are mainstream nowadays and can be bought in all supermarkets and other stores – always look for the Fairtrade logo, especially for tea, coffee, bananas and chocolate. You can find all the Fairtrade products in Cornerweighs and most of them in other Henfield stores. Last year was a pivotal one for Fairtrade. There was growth in most of the categories Fairtrade is best known for – tea, coffee, cocoa, bananas, flowers and wine – with the UK Fairtrade market worth an estimated £1.6 billion in retail sales. This generated an estimated £29.8 million in Fairtrade Premium for the growers, and showed that British shoppers remain committed to Fairtrade. Jackie and Peter Bates

The team will begin their journey in Dharamsala, where the Tibetan community are situated, before setting off into the peaceful and stunning Himalayan mountain range. With spectacular views guaranteed, they will pass through the Kingdom of Gaddi, a semi-nomadic race who spend months wandering the high passes with their cattle, rhododendron forests, Hindu settlements and Buddhist monasteries. The trip will round off with an unmissable visit to the Taj Mahal, one of the world’s greatest monuments. As part of the challenge, participants will also be invited to hang prayer flags at the highest point of the trek in Laka Got to celebrate the lives of loved ones and all those cared for by St Barnabas House. HURSTPIERPOINT SINGERS SPRING CONCERT NOMINATIONS WANTED FOR CPRE SUSSEX COUNTRYSIDE AWARDS! The Sussex branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) is holding a competition to find the county’s unsung environmental heroes. If you know a local community group, or a business, organisation or school, which is actively working to enhance or conserve the natural environment, that you think deserves recognition please enter it! “It could be anything from an initiative at a local pub or village shop,” says Director of CPRE Sussex, Kia Trainor, “to a community or school working together to reduce waste or plant flowers for wildlife.” There are five categories including one specifically for children and young people. “The winner could be an initiative which has been running for the past 6 years, or it could be something which has only just got off the ground,” says Kia. “Whatever it is we would like to hear about it. The only requirement is that it contributes to the protection, conservation or improvement of the environment and benefits local communities.” The five categories are: The Rural Enterprise Award; Environmental Education Award for Schools and Colleges; Sussex Landscapes Award for enhancing the landscape or biodiversity; The Making Places Design Award for sustainable construction projects and the Peter Brandon

The Singers are returning to Holy Trinity Church, Hurstpierpoint on Saturday 8th April for their spring concert, with a varied programme of music by three British composers – Donald Swann, Ralph Vaughan Williams and John Rutter. Swann’s name is irrevocably linked with that of Michael Flanders for songs such as The Hippopotamus, but he also wrote less comic pieces, including this setting of poems from JRR Tolkien’s Middle-earth books – The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and more – which has been arranged for solos and choir by our director of music, Paul Simpson. Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Mystical Songs are varied settings of poems by George Herbert (1593-1633) and are very atmospheric. They conclude with a triumphant setting of ‘Let All the World in Every Corner Sing.’ John Rutter’s arrangement of assorted British folk songs will be recognized by the older generation with nostalgia and hopefully welcomed and appreciated by younger people for their catchy tunes and delightful words. They reflect a bygone age, but the sentiments expressed in them are timeless. Tickets for the concert, which starts at 7.30pm cost £10 (including a glass of wine or soft drink) will be available via members of the choir; or from Jan Ton News, Hurstpierpoint and Hassocks Hardware; or on the door. Accompanied under12s, as always, are free. Joan Denely

West Sussex County Council has relaunched its popular scheme to reduce energy bills for vulnerable residents. The West Sussex Affordable Warmth scheme provides eligible households with financial support. This goes towards new, energyefficient heating systems as well as insulation for lofts and cavity walls. To be eligible, residents should have a household income of less than £16,010. They should also either own their home or rent it from a private landlord and receive certain income-related benefits. Under the current phase of the scheme funding is available for replacement heating systems for off-gas properties, loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. All heating and insulation work is carried out to a high standard by local, accredited installer, Osborne Energy. If you think that you could qualify for support, check the full scheme eligibility criteria on the Your Energy Sussex website. You can also call Osborne Energy on 0800 0851674. Their staff will verify eligibility, check the suitability of your home and heating system, and assess the level of funding available to you. West Sussex County Council

250 NOT OUT

great deal can change in 300 years: In 1721 Robert Walpole became the first Prime Minister of Great Britain, the first motor car was still over one hundred and fifty years from being created and the industrial revolution would not begin for decades. But it is for none of these reasons that 1721 is a year of great significance, a year revered and cherished above all others by residents of Southern England and beyond. No, 1721 is special because it is the year of the first recorded game of cricket on the hallowed turf of the Henfield Common. In the centuries that have followed much of the world has changed beyond all recognition. So it is reassuring to know that visitors to West Sussex’s premier cricketing venue are still greeted by the crack of willow striking leather, and the sight of dogs and their owners ambling around the pitch, much as their 18th century counterparts must have done. Henfield Cricket Club itself was founded fifty years later in 1771, and 2021 will therefore see the club celebrate its 250th anniversary. This makes Henfield one of the oldest cricket clubs not just in the country, but in the entire world: when one takes into account that the world-famous Marylebone Cricket Club (the MCC) was not founded until 1787, Henfield’s remarkable and rich heritage is

brought into sharp focus. Having overcome numerous challenges throughout the preceding 296 years Henfield Cricket Club continues to thrive. This year it will field three Senior Saturday XI’s, all playing league cricket, two Sunday sides, and a rapidly improving women’s XI which has enjoyed impressive growth since its inception five years ago. The Colts section of the club also continues to flourish: the club will this year field league sides at U14, U12, U10 and U9 levels, and is looking to field a girls’ side next year. The club are always on the lookout for new players, particularly those starting out from Years 2, 3 and 4 at school. Those interested can contact Ben Helps (07958 652105, ben.helps@oliverwyman. com) Matches take place on the Common usually every Saturday and Sunday between the middle of April and the end of September. The Pavilion is always open for teas and coffees and it also has a licensed bar. With the sun shining and the cricket on in the background, the Pavilion is a great place to soak in the summer, enjoy a drink with friends and (of course) to watch Henfield’s batsman and bowlers dismantle the opposition. Outside the normal weekend fixtures, the club is hosting its second Sussex Federation six-a-side

prove its facilities to enable it grow and cater for the cricketing needs of an expanding village. The facilities have already been significantly improved in recent times (the re-laying of the pitch in 2013, the installation of a new score board and the redevelopment of the practice nets) and the pending drainage work of the football field will improve the outfield and the colt’s pitch. The historic milestones ahead represent a golden opportunity to raise the more substantive funds needed to make the necessary improvements required for the pavilion and to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Henfield Cricket Club in the style it deserves. The club has a limited number of sponsorship opportunities to assist with this fundraising from roadside banners to event sponsorship. If you are interested in becoming involved please contact Craig Scott (07593 329163, craig. scott36@gmail.com). The summer of 2021 will be very special for Henfield Cricket Club and is a wonderful opportunity to bring the whole village together to share in the celebrations. In the months to come please do keep a watchful eye on the ‘What’s On’ section of BN5 for events happening on the Common that you can come along and support. day on Sunday 28 May which will see teams from around the county participating. There will also be the opportunity to meet players from Sussex County Cricket Club who will be providing coaching for attending children. The day promises to be packed with fun and will be a great chance for people of all levels of cricketing experience to pop over to the Common and get involved. Once again the club will host the now annual T20 competition sponsored by the White Hart which will attract the great and good from across Sussex, with the final being played on Friday 7 July. With or without a Henfield side in the final (but hopefully with), it promises to be a fantastic evening of explosive entertainment and a festive atmosphere. As with all amateur organisations, Henfield Cricket Club is reliant on the generosity of local firms and individuals to sponsor its activities. This year the club is delighted to announce two new shirt sponsors: D&L Property Services Ltd and Seven Integration. Henfield is also fortunate to have the continuing support of the White Hart and Get Fit fitness training. In addition to these main sponsors, Henfield are grateful to those who have advertised on their roadside banners which can be seen on match days throughout the summer. Over the next few years the club will further im-

fter the huge success of last years Henfield Piazza Italia, when hundreds of people turned out in the glorious spring sunshine to enjoy a glorious range of Italian supercars roaring into the village, Henfield is proud to be once again hosting the event on Sunday 2 April. As part of the rural tour (a taster for the main Piazza Italia event in Horsham which takes place over Easter weekend), this years’ Henfield Piazza Italia will once again feature Ferrari’s, Lamborghini’s, Alpha Romeo’s, Maserati’s, Ducatti’s and many other supercars and motorbikes in a fantastic festival of noise and colour – its definitely an event not to be missed! The tour will start in Horsham and will visit Billingshurst, Pulborough, Storrington and Steyning before finally arriving in Henfield around 3pm. They will proceed up the High Street to the Wantley Hill roundabout before coming back to the Henfield Hall car park to park up, allowing members of the public to enjoy them before leaving at approximately 4pm. If last year’s event is

Once again Henfield High Street will be supporting the event with creative and eye-catching Italianthemed window displays and special offers in the run-up to and on the day itself. There will also be a range of stalls in the Henfield Hall car park on the Sunday selling delicious food, both locally and internationally sourced, as well as entertainment for all ages (including classic cars) from 12pm. f you live in Henfield or the surrounding villages we very much hope you know about Henfield Garden Club, but just in case you have managed to miss us we’d like to share with you who we are, what we do, and how you can find out more about us. The Club started in 2000 and the number of members has grown steadily. It’s not a surprise, really that the Garden Club should be so popular we are, after all, living in country villages and many of us have gardens that we love to spend time in. Club members are not experts by any means - one of the reasons people join is to find out more about the flowers, shrubs or trees in their own gardens. Sometimes members are interested in more specific things like how to break down clay soil, how to get a really good compost heap going in the garden, how to garden in a more organic way, or why their Brussel sprouts keep being eaten by an apparently invisible insect! During the winter months we have regular meetings where speakers help us understand more about gardening: during 2016 we had talks on a variety of topics including Gardening for Wildlife, Growing Sweet Peas, the Modern Kitchen Garden and Making Sense of the Weather. In October we will be welcoming the well-known plantsman Roy Lancaster to talk to us.

The Club has a strong social element too, so there are plenty of opportunities for everyone to mix and get to know each other with social events like a cheese and wine evening, barbeque, cream tea and Christmas supper with dancing and live band. In Spring and Summer 2017 we will be dusting off our picnic baskets for car and coach outings which include: April: Bignor Park in Pulborough - the home of Viscount Ned Mersey and his wife Clare where we will be free to explore the Zen pond, temple, Greek loggia and unusual sculptures, impressive Cedars, a rare Holm Oak and the spring flowers, which should be wonderful at this time of year. May: Great Comp in Sevenoaks - a garden of seven acres planted to adorn each season: this month we hope to see Magnolias in bloom. In the afternoon we visit the small and perfectly formed Emmetts Garden, well known for its beautiful bluebells and amazing Spring colour. One can enjoy a meadow here or simply sit back and relax! June: Heathside, Cobham - a 1/3rd acre plantsman’s garden designed to show interest during each season of the year. There are obelisks and urns, ponds and water features which bring a tranquil aspect to the garden. A contemporary

parterre and various topiary shapes add formality. After a lunch break we visit Chinthurst Lodge, Wonersh Common. A one-acre atmospheric garden divided into ‘rooms’ consisting of herbaceous borders, a dramatic white garden, gravel garden with water feature, specimen trees and shrubs, a small kitchen garden, fruit cage, two wells, ornamental ponds, a herb parterre; also a Millennium parterre garden, as featured in the magazine Period Homes and Interiors. July: Rymans, Apuldram, Chichester: This garden has a walled area surrounding a 15th century stone house. There are roses, ponds and flowering shrubs with lots to hold our interest in high Summer. In June 2015 the garden was featured in The English Garden magazine. There are various pubs in Bosham or Dell Quay for lunch or plenty of places to enjoy a picnic and soak up the sea air and surrounding views. We then move onto a smaller garden nearby in Earnley where we can enjoy cottage style woodland and Japanese gardens, water features, borders of perennials, with a particular emphasis on Southern Hemisphere plants. There are unusual plants to enjoy, many of which have been grown from seed, extensive open borders with correas, corokias, leptospermum, prostatheras and trees from ‘Down Under’.

01273 494002

We have more outings to look forward to in August, September and October, including Alford, Wisley Flower Show, and Andy McIndoe’s wonderful garden, along with the Sir Harold Hillier Garden and Arboretum in Hampshire. This wide choice of outings, picnics, lunches and teas means there should be something to suit everyone. We are proud to say that we currently have around 220 members, so we must be doing something right! In 2017 you’ll see our stall at the Henfield Fayre where we also help with judging of the flowers and produce, at the Henfield Arts and Gardens weekend where we swap or sell plants, tending the Millennium flower bed on the corner of the Henfield Hall car park (planted by the Garden Club), or doing some pruning in the cemetery Garden of Remembrance. You need to be a member to join in any of the activities mentioned, so please do come and talk to us if you’d like to know more. (We meet in the winter in the Henfield Hall on the first Tuesday of each month at 7pm, except during March when the meeting takes place on a Friday evening) or contact our Membership Secretary, Julia Simpson (01273 493900 or jbs@backsettown.demon. co.uk), or view us on www.bn5magazine.co.uk Stephanie Weeden, on behalf of Henfield Garden Club Committee.

The examination and preparation work before a CEREC procedure is much the same as for traditional restorative procedures. First the dentist will examine the tooth and identify the most appropriate treatment. They will then administer an anaesthetic and prepare your tooth for the restoration, removing decayed and weakened tooth tissue.

restorations are metal-free and closely match the composition of natural tooth enamel. This means the restoration and tooth expand and contract at almost equal rates, so your tooth does not crack when it comes into contact with hot and cold food or drink.

Next the dentist uploads the 3D image to the CEREC computer and, using CEREC software together with their own expertise, they design a restoration which will return the tooth to its natural strength, form and function. Within minutes the restoration design is sent electronically to a separate milling machine which will create the restoration out of a ceramic block (chosen to match your tooth colour). The milling process takes about 10 to 20 minutes, after which the all-ceramic, tooth-coloured restoration is finished and ready to be bonded in place. Finally, the dentist tries the restoration in your mouth to ensure a proper fit and ‘bite’ and then it is glazed and bonded to the prepared tooth using a chemical bonding process.

ehearsals have been well under way since the beginning of January for Henfield Theatre Company’s next production; not one, not two, but THREE of Alan Bennett’s exquisitely written and very funny monologues are set to delight Henfield’s discerning public in March. ‘A Cream Cracker Under the Settee’, ‘Her Big Chance’ and ‘A Lady of Letters’ are finely drawn and stunningly sharp portraits of characters based on Bennett’s childhood experiences of family and early life in Leeds. Beautifully crafted, each monologue chronicles the life of a single female character, forensically and sensitively explored to reveal the small secrets, sadness’s and triumphs which lie hidden beneath the surface. If you recently enjoyed the character portrayed in Bennett’s ‘The Lady in the Van’, then you will want to come and see three of Henfield Theatre Company’s most talented actresses, Mary Matson, Elloa Atkinson and Angela Reid give performances which echo classic Bennett humour and pathos. This will be a quietly intimate production with the monologues being performed on staging surrounded on three sides by audience and as a result, you will find yourselves being drawn compellingly into the stories of characters who

01273 494002

have much to share and much to reveal. Absorbing and very funny, you will go home with echoes of a Yorkshire landscape in your head. The plays are directed by Hilary Westlake who is very experienced on and off stage and well known in Henfield. She commented; “The cast is amazing, the production team talented and supportive and I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to work on such an absorbing project”. The production will be staged at The Henfield Hall from Thursday 16 to Saturday 18 March, starting at 7.30pm. The production is sponsored by Setfords Solicitors. Tickets priced £10 and £8 are available from the box office at Henfield Furnishings on Henfield High Street (01273 490080), from Monday 27 February. See the website www.henfieldtheatrecompany.com for more information. Martin Love

New Inheritance Tax relief on your home Inheritance tax (IHT) is charged on your death at the rate of 40%, based on the value of your assets. This 40% rate is only charged on any value exceeding the nil-rate band which, for many years, has been £325,000. From 6 April, an additional ‘residence nil-rate band; (RNRB) applies when your home is left to children, grandchildren and some other individuals. The table below shows the RNRB levels up until 2020/21. The nil-rate band and RNRB are transferable between spouses and civil partners, meaning spouses and civil partners will be entitled to a combined nil-rate band and RNRB of £1 million by 2020.

Your estate will benefit from the RNRB, in addition to the main nil-rate band, if you leave your interest in your home to direct descendants, such as children or grandchildren, and other individuals, such as stepchildren, adopted or foster children and, in some cases, spouses or civil partners of these individuals (qualifying beneficiaries). Unfortunately, if you do not have any children, you will not be able to benefit from the RNRB – this has been one of the major criticisms of the measure. Your estate will also need to be valued at less than the ‘upper limit’ which will be £2 million from 6 April to be entitled to the full RNRB. The RNRB is tapered down for estates worth more than £2 million (by £1 for every £2 over the £2m limit). The RNRB is lost completely if your estate exceeds the upper threshold, which will be £2,200,00 in 2017/18, rising incrementally each year, reaching £2,350,000 in 2020/21. These limits are set to rise with inflation, but not until 6 April 2021. Under government proposals, some or all of the RNRB

will still be available where you have sold your home and downsized, or even if you no longer own a property (for example, because you have moved into a care home), provided that the sale was on or after 8 July 2015 and at least part of your estate is inherited by a child or other qualifying beneficiary. If you own more than one property that is (or has previously been) your residence, your executors must choose which one will benefit from the RNRB. The home can be in the UK or overseas. Even if you think your existing Will already leaves your home to your children, you should review it as the conditions for claiming the RNRB are complicated. Not all gifts to children (or qualifying beneficiaries) qualify; there are restrictions for certain gifts on trust or gifts to take effect when your children reach a specified age, for example. You should seek expert advice to ensure that your family can benefit from the potential IHT savings that the RNRB can offer. If your estate is worth more than £2 million, or on the cusp of this amount, you should review your estate planning as it may be possible to arrange your affairs to allow the RNRB to be claimed wholly or in part. If you have given away your home to your children already, or have carried out any tax planning to reduce the value of your interest in it for IHT purposes, you should review these arrangements to check whether your estate can still benefit from the RNRB.
