Henfield Wellness Event
Editor’s Letter
Welcome to September BN5. It’s been a really difficult time for our schools and we’re so proud of the resilience shown by our young people and their incredibly hardworking teachers. So it was a real pleasure to have an article arrive in our in-boxes, showcasing the artistic talents of the children from St. Peter’s Primary art department. Their work is beautiful; so imaginative and creative. Please take a look on page 20, congratulations to all who participated. The new Artisan Market has prompted us to try some more locally produced food and drink. We met Esmé Crowther there and were so inspired by her story about Poynings Grange wine we decided to feature their beautiful South Downs vineyard in BN5, you can find out all about the farm on page 28. We can highly recommend their lovely wines and fizz. ‘Lockdown Bulge’ is apparently an official condition, but don’t panic, the team from Henfield Wellness Event are here to help! They can kick-start your healthier lifestyle on 19 September, a huge thank you to them all for choosing the Henfield Haven as beneficiaries of their event. Find out more on page 19. Enjoy September,

Upper Beeding Shortmat Bowls Club
Henfield Animal Safari Round Up
Did you think it was all over? Fear not, the safari lives on at the Sussex Prairie Garden! We are thrilled to announce that the outdoor animals have migrated to their new home for the warmer, summer months. The gardens are a wonderful place to play hide and seek and hunt for the animals whilst enjoying and admiring the fantastic plants and flowers in this beautiful and peaceful location. We have been selling some of the crafted creatures through our Facebook page. So far this has raised an amazing £600 which will be shared between Macmillan Cancer Support and Henfield Haven. Members of the Henfield Art Club very kindly donated a couple of paintings. If you would like to make a donation for one of these, please email us on henfieldcp.info@gmail.com . With the success of the event, which was enjoyed by children and adults alike, we are now starting to think about what we can do next year. If you have any ideas, please get in touch, email as above. Thank you to all those members of our wonderful community without whom this event could not have happened.
Sue Willis & Tamsin Gibbs
The bowls club was formed in 1990 and soon became established playing in Upper Beeding Village Hall. At its peak there were 30 members attending 3 sessions each week. Like many local clubs the membership has dropped but we retain a small enthusiastic number who meet each week on Tuesdays. It is fun, sociable and gentle exercise. We cater for those of all abilities, either social or those who are more competitive. We have a small league team which this year consists of just 6 players. Do you bowl outdoors and would like to play short mat in the winter? Have you bowled before and would like to rekindle old skills? Would you like to take part in a new activity? If you are interested please contact our secretary Jean on 01273 493184.

Seed Swap 2022
In advance of next year’s seed exchange, which will be arranged for early next year (date tbc), can we please ask you to save a few extra dry seeds in separate paper envelopes, as we come into peak seed-collecting season? If you have never collected seeds before, it’s very easy and fun to do. Wait until the seed head has gone brown and collect it on a dry day, I use brown paper bags. Gently separate the husks from the seed itself and pop into separate labelled paper packets (I use wage packet envelopes). You need to make sure that you put the plant name on the envelope, when you collected the seed (month and year) and where it came from i.e. Henfield, Partridge Green etc. This gives people an idea of what will grow in our area. Keep the seeds dry and fairly cool and you will be all set for the Seed Swap next year! Spare commercially produced seeds are also totally acceptable! Happy gathering!

Covid cannot stop Sussex Voiceworks singing!
This local mixed voice choir has made it through 2020/21 and is now raring to launch into 2021/22. We rehearsed on Zoom, and recorded a few pieces, and ended with a hilarious, emotional singing picnic in the garden of Henfield Hall on one of the wettest days of the summer, 21 June! We also engaged some young professional singers, who had been hard hit by lockdown, to support us. Now we are all ready to start ‘real’ rehearsals in the Shoreham Centre from Monday 6 September at 7.30pm. We welcome all enthusiastic singers, particularly tenors and basses, to try us out at any Monday rehearsal, no audition necessary. We will be singing Bob Chilcott’s ‘Jubilate’ for our Christmas concert at St Mary de Haura in Shoreham. We are also holding an afternoon Workshop on Saturday 23 October at Southwick Methodist when we will practise and perform extracts from Howard Goodall’s ‘Eternal Light’. For more information and contact details see our website at http://sussexvoiceworks.weebly.com

The Warren
We had a lovely party for the children who will be starting school in September with a bouncy castle and party food! The children each took home a Warren bunny each and a painted hand-print. The staff wish them all the best knowing they are all ready for their next chapter in their life. The Aunties would like to thank all the children and parents for all their lovely gifts and cards which we received from both children leaving and children due to start back in September.

Time for Dessert
Work Continues at the Henfield Hall The refurbishment and updating work continues at the Henfield Hall with the help of a team of volunteers and support by local company Gardner & Scardifield. A new pathway has been laid along the east side to improve the fire evacuation routes in line with latest requirements. Later this year we plan to begin to update the stage lighting, much of which dates back nearly fifty years, by fitting more energy saving LED lights and providing improved performance facilities. The Hall Management Committee’s aim is to continue to improve facilities and work towards becoming carbon neutral. It is thanks to the many volunteers and local company’s support that so much has been achieved over the last few years.
Time For Dessert has opened and we will be serving a choice of 20 ice cream flavours, Belgian waffles, milkshakes, build your own cheesecake and more. It’s a small new independent business run by sisters Charley and Shannon. The pandemic gave us the push we needed to start something of our own, it’s fun and something we love to do. We offer a walk-in order and collection service as well as local evening deliveries. For now, our opening times will be – Thursday & Friday 4.30-9.30pm and Saturday & Sunday 12.00–9pm.

Grand Henfield Theatre Company Costume Sale
Now that we see the prospect of going out to parties again (remember those?) here comes a great opportunity to pick up some amazing costumes. Henfield Theatre Company (HTC) will be holding a costume sale in The Henfield Hall, 10am-1pm on Saturday 18 September. In November 2020, HTC moved their costume wardrobe to smaller premises and did a cull of their stock. The smaller sized costumes were donated to St Peter’s School, some went to charity and some to the University of Brighton Fashion department. However, they saved the best for the Costume sale! There will be items from pantos, historical dramas and more recent 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s wear. Refreshments will be available too. The rationalisation of HTC’s costume store does not mean that there will be any less activity on the Henfield stage – far from it. Right now, the company is in rehearsal for The Government Inspector, an intriguing comedy of errors, which runs for four performances from 14 – 16 October (including a Saturday matinée). After that we can look forward to more zany fun in Treasure Island, the Panto, which goes on stage in mid-January 2022. For more information www.henfieldtheatrecompany.com.

SEPTEMBER 2021 | News ment Committee was unable to find a way of safely grazing cattle on the common, due mainly to the heavy traffic on the A281. The Committee has decided to adopt another project for developing more varied ecologies on the common. This entails leaving the margins of the grass areas uncut for one, two or three years. Although not providing the ecology that would have been created by cattle grazing, this will develop different environments, encouraging flora and fauna that prefer relatively uncut grass to thrive. Consequently, the margins will look a little untidy but hopefully the increase in wildlife will more than compensate for this.
BN5 Birds
It’s been a difficult spring and summer for Henfield’s birds. The cold, dry spring affected early nesting birds and some Blue Tits’ nests failed due to the lack of insect food. The north easterly winds in May slowed down summer migrants; there have been periods of prolonged cold and rain. Despite the adverse weather conditions our birds have managed to do what they have to, and we have been pleased to see juvenile Jays, Robins, Greenfinches and Dunnocks in our garden. It also looks as if local Blackbird and Song Thrush pairs have each raised two broods. One Henfield Birdwatch member had a family of Great Spotted Woodpeckers visiting her garden and took a lovely picture. Some local birds had young in their nests at the end of July - on a walk on 28th July we watched a Common Whitethroat (a summer migrant) taking food back to the nest and saw a Blackbird collecting worms – a sure sign that it is feeding nestlings. A few years ago, Henfield Birdwatch sought advice from an Owl expert and erected a Barn Owl box near the Downslink going towards Steyning. Our member Val is a qualified bird ringer and this year she (with the guidance of the Owl expert) manage to ring three Owl fledglings, they aren’t beautiful yet! Our summer visitors are now migrating back to sunnier climes and the end of August will have seen the start of our winter visitors returning. The bird calendar is always busy!

Neighbourhood Plan Update
The result of the Henfield Neighbourhood Plan referendum on 6 May this year is that 2,085 electors voted to support the plan with 218 opposing it. Of the ten plans across the district that held referenda that day Henfield had the highest percentage turnout of 47% of the electorate voting and achieved the second highest percentage of support with 90.53% of electors supporting the plan. You may wonder why it has taken me so long to bring this result to you in a local publication. This is because, hugely important though the referendum result is to a Neighbourhood Plan, the

News | SEPTEMBER 2021 plan has to be formally made by Horsham District Council (HDC) before it can become part of the planning framework for the district. The plan was formally made at the HDC Full Council Meeting on the 23 June. Following on from that there was a six-week Judicial Review Period where any organisation or individual could make a legal challenge to the plan on the grounds that the procedural process has not been followed correctly. I can now report that no challenge was forthcoming during the Judicial Review period and therefore the Henfield Neighbourhood Plan is secure and cannot be dismissed. It can be challenged, any plan can be, but it remains in place and forms part of the planning framework for the district. It is now the responsibility of Henfield Parish Council (HPC), in conjunction with HDC and the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA), to ensure the plan is reviewed and kept up to date as appropriate during the plan`s lifetime until 2031. As well as being a tool for HPC to use in all planning matters, it is your plan too and can be used by organisations and individuals alike to either support an application you want to take place or to oppose any development that you think does not comply with the policies contained within the plan. Once again, I would like to thank the Steering Group and the Focus Groups for all their dedicated work throughout the plan making
period. My thanks also go to all the residents and organisations that provided input into the plan for their support throughout what has been a very challenging process.

Henfield Garden Club Celebrity Speaker
Covid restrictions permitting, our Autumn programme of speakers begins on Tuesday, 5th October, 7pm for 7.30pm start at the Henfield Hall, when we welcome celebrity gardener Andy Sturgeon, winner of The Best Show Garden at Chelsea in 2019 and twice voted one of the top 10 gardeners in the UK. His talk ‘The Making of the Modern Garden’ is an informative, entertaining and humorous look at the history of garden design, cramming over 2,000 years into a few minutes to explain how modern gardens evolved and how his work fits into garden design today. Henfield Garden Club members may attend free of charge. Members must register by email for a place before 5 September to carolyn@wineflow. plus.com to receive a confirmation email. We may have extra places available to non-members at a cost of £10 per ticket on a first-come first-served basis. Please note that these places will not be allocated until after 8th September.

HENFIELD WELLNESS EVENT HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL THERE!
SUNDAY 19 SEPTEMBER 2021 11 AM TO 3 PM THE HENFIELD HAVEN FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO REGISTER VISIT: HENFIELDEVENTS.COM
W
e’ve got a host of fabulous local wellness experts lined up to deliver a series of classes, treatments and talks at Henfield’s first Wellness Event which will take place on Sunday 19th September 2021 at the Henfield Haven from 11am to 4pm. Looking after our own wellbeing is essential, something that we are all more aware of following the events of the past 18 months. But sometimes it’s difficult to know where to start. By bringing some of our local wellness businesses together at the Henfield Haven, visitors will be able to talk to the different practitioners to find out what they offer and sample the different range of therapies and fitness classes on offer in our village. Perhaps you are looking for a new healthy routine, maybe you have a particular health goal in mind, or perhaps you are just curious - this event will help you find out more and decide what’s right for you! Henfield is blessed with a wealth of different wellness experts many of whom will be showcasing on the day. People will be able to experience taster treatment sessions for therapies such as massage, osteopathy, and meditation, as well as short 30 minute fitness classes such as Pilates, yoga and personal training. Talks will include subjects such as aromatherapy, acupuncture, the power of the mind and chronic pain. There will also be freshly cold pressed juices and goodness bowls available. The idea for the Henfield Wellness Event came
01273 494002
from a group of local businesswomen (many of whom work in the wellness industry), who set up a Women’s Networking Group during 2019. They chose the Henfield Haven as it is the perfect village venue - peaceful and relaxing with lots of individual rooms, a big hall and a beautiful, tranquil garden. Entry to the Henfield Wellness Event will be a £2 donation to The Haven and the first 100 people to arrive will receive a free goodie bag! The taster fitness classes will be a £7.50 for 30 minutes and the taster therapies will be a £10 for a 20 minute session. The organisers of the Wellness Event are proud to be donating half of the proceeds made on the day to this hugely valuable village asset. T
he last 16 months have been a particularly difficult time for us all and schools across the country have been no less affected. Here at St Peter’s Primary School the impact of COVID on our school community has meant the children have missed out on lots of activities that we would normally do throughout the school year, including sporting activities, topic trips and visits to church to name but a few. In order to bring our school community back together as restrictions have slowly lifted and as the end of the year drew to a close, our Art lead, Mrs Williams, was set the task of creating an Art Project that all year groups could contribute towards. The theme of our art exhibition was birds. Birds often form unique communities, made up of several species with similar traits, a bit like our school community; we are all similar but uniquely different and like birds have had to adapt throughout the year to allow our community to flourish. Each year group chose a topic within the 20 | BN5 Magazine
theme and created, using different materials and mediums, a wide range of unique art pieces. Reception have had the company of the baby chicks over the last couple of months, so recreated their version of chickens using their hand prints, Year 1 focused on the naughty sea gulls from the book ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch’ by David and Ronda Armitage. Year 2 have been studying Quentin Blake so it seemed only fitting to recreated Blake’s Cockatoos. Year 3 focused on mark making and creating their own patterned papers. Year 4 have looked at the work of Matt Sewell famous for his illustrations of British birds, they developed their observational drawings skills and painting with watercolours. Year 5 experimented with the medium of printmaking, whilst Year 6 looked at constructing 3D sculptures focusing on patterns and symmetry. We are all incredibly proud of what the children have achieved.

Henfield resident Richard Bates, consultant solicitor at Cognitive Law in Brighton, comments on Digital Assets. When considering assets to be dealt with in their wills, most clients generally overlook digital assets. Indeed, a recent Law Society survey revealed that 93% of people with a will have not included digital assets in it and only 7% said they fully understand what happens to digital assets after they die. Digital assets have become an integral part of modern life, and it is important to provide for them in our wills. A digital asset is anything that is stored in binary format and comes with a right to use. This means any online accounts, such as email accounts, social networking profiles, photo sharing websites and any owned domains. It may also include digitally held photographs, documents, instant messages, spreadsheets etc. In most cases, they are password protected, giving only you access to them. Indeed no one else might know of their existence. That said, many digital assets, such as online accounts or cryptocurrencies will have a monetary value so your executors should be given access accordingly. Whilst other accounts, such as Spotify, may not have a cash value, you may wish to pass the use of these on to a loved one. The same goes for social media accounts. Without instructions, your executors may know of and be able to deal with obvious digital assets, but lesser-known assets, including cryptocurrencies, are trickier. Sentimental items, such as family photos, can be left as part of a gift of personal property, but only by your will. Some accounts allow you to nominate someone to control your account, while others allow an executor to request an account’s removal. You should consider who will deal with your online presence after death and include a digital assets clause in your will, giving your executors discretion to decide who will benefit from any digital assets with monetary or sentimental value. Alternatively, you could leave certain digital assets to named beneficiaries. You can also decide whether you want social media accounts to be closed or memorialised. To discuss any of these issues further, please get in touch on 07866 547366 or richard.bates@cognitivelaw.co.uk. You can also find out more at www.cognitivelaw.co.uk. estled at the foot of the South Downs in the picturesque village of Poynings are six acres of vineyards run and managed by Rupert and Esmé Crowther where they grow the grapes for their award-wining Poynings Grange wine. Poynings Grange is a traditional Sussex farm and Rupert’s family moved here in the early 1980’s. Continuing in his family’s footsteps, Rupert and Esmé farm Pedigree Sussex cattle and sheep and run a busy livery yard. “We talked a lot about diversification” said Rupert. “We knew we had the ideal location for vines - a south-facing location with free-draining, sandy soil. We must have talked about planting vines for several years before we finally decided to bite the bullet.” Esmé laughs: “Which was the same time we were starting our family!” Rupert undertook a short introductory course on vine growing at Plumpton College and they also took a lot of advice from Kevin Sutherland, the head winemaker at the Bluebell Vineyard Estates near Sheffield Park. Ground preparation began in late 2010 on the six-acre site and in April the following year they planted 8,500 vines. “This is when the real hard work started” Rupert explained. “Establishing vines takes several years and it’s a long-term investment – it can take up to
28 | BN5 Magazine
five years for the vines to reach their full potential.” Esmé and Rupert grow four varieties of grape: Pinot Noir & Pinot Meunier, Photograph © Jonathan Browning Chardonnay and Bacchus. After nurturing the vines for two years, they handpicked their first harvest in one day with the help of family and friends. This first 2013 harvest was comparatively small - just two tonnes of grapes, but by 2015 their yield had increased to over 12 tonnes. As with most farming, grape growing completely is at the mercy of the weather. Grapes thrive with long spells of dry, sunny weather but are less happy with frosty or damp and humid weather when they become prone to fungal disease. The 2017 Poynings Grange harvest had been fated by severe late Spring frosts and that year their yield was less than 10 tonnes. However production bounced back the following year in 2018 after perfect weather conditions gave them an exceptional harvest of 35 tonnes! Harvesting itself is also a challenge as Rupert explained: “As the harvesting season approaches it becomes a juggling act. We need to take regular grape samples to measure the ripeness – www.henfieldbn5.co.uk
SEPTEMBER 2021 | Local interest
a perfectly ripe grapes needs to be a balance of both sugar and acidity. We also need to keep an eye on the weather forecast as an early frost or too much rain can wipe-out a harvest. And finally we need to make sure we have enough labour available to pick the grapes.” As is usual with many small vineyards, Esmé and Rupert send their grapes off-site to an external winery to produce their Poynings Grange wine. For many years they worked with the Bluebell Vineyard Estate but more recently they are working in partnership with Plumpton College. From their four varieties of grapes they produce several thousand bottles of wine each year: Two sparkling wines – a Blanc-de-Blancs and a Rosé de Noirs – and a still Bacchus white wine. As relative newcomers to the English wine industry they were delighted to win a gold and a silver medal at the 2020 Independent English Wine Awards for their Bacchus and sparkling Blanc-de-Blancs respectively. “We only entered the awards at the very last minute and we were blown away when we won a gold and silver’ said Esmé. Rupert continues: “We’re all about producing a quality grape to produce a quality wine and so it’s very satisfying to have this recognised.”
01273 494002
Sussex is at the forefront of English wine production and Esmé and Rupert are active members of a local community of vineyard managers. “Agriculture of any kind can be quite an isolated profession and it is fantastic to be a part of such an inclusive and supportive community” said Esmé. “Everyone faces the same challenges and it’s great to be able to share experiences and ideas with people in the same situation.” Passionate about their local community, Esmé and Rupert currently sell their Poynings Grange wine through a select number of local retailers, pubs and restaurants. They have a strong partnership with local farm shop Rushfields (who also stock their Sussex pedigree beef and lamb) and Esmé has also started selling direct at the recently re-established Henfield Farmers Market. After spending some time with Esmé and Rupert it is clear to see that they love what they do: “Viticulture is not for the faint hearted” laughed Esmé. “Every year is very different and as a really tiny producer we have to embrace the changes and move on! Rupert continued: We love being a part of an emerging industry – it’s very hard work, but also hugely rewarding and incredibly exciting!”

Household Budget Support Service
A
s well as providing vulnerable residents with access to food, the wonderful local charity Horsham Matters are now helping them with the root causes of their food poverty too through the Household Budget Support Service. There can be multiple reasons why people find themselves unable to afford to afford food; the loss of income or unexpected bills are often the cause which can leave people feeling helpless. This is where Client Support Assistant Karen Merriner can help out. By meeting with clients, either over the telephone or via Zoom, she is able to support individuals to maximise their income, review their expenditure, highlight any problem areas and work towards a sustainable budget. Karen prepares an initial spreadsheet which she shares with the client in a follow-up call which identifies opportunities for the individual to save money. For example, many people don’t shop around for the best electricity and gas bill rates so may be paying over the odds every month. Or they may have forgotten to cancel a direct debit which is no longer needed. Then she will follow up with another call to find out the individual is getting on. If more specialist help is required then she is able to refer them on. For example, she refers individuals who need professional advice on benefits or debt to Citizens Advice; those who want to quit smoking are referred on to the Wellbeing Centre in Horsham for support; and the elderly are referred on to Age UK for specialist advice. “Food poverty can affect those from all walks of life, even those who are working, and it is nothing to be ashamed of,” said Karen. “All we are doing is giving people the tools to take control over their lives.” The Household Budget Support Service is open to Horsham residents seeking support from Horsham Matters, not just existing food bank clients, and a formal referral is not required. Individuals can refer themselves by calling 0300 1240204 or emailing support@horsham-matters.org.uk
Horsham Matters Ltd is a charity delivering projects that provide practical support to those in need across the Horsham District. As well as providing immediate crisis support, we aim to help our clients to tackle the root causes of their financial hardship. Services include: delivery of the districts’ foodbanks; household budget support; provision of a night shelter for the street homeless; and provision of furniture to those moving into temporary / permanent accommodation. In addition to their Horsham base, the charity also has a ‘Hub on the Move’ which visits the six most rural areas in the district. For more information on how you can access services or support Horsham Matters through donating or volunteering, see horsham-matters.com

Understanding Accounts
Your business accounts reflect the financial performance of your enterprise. They are a valuable management tool in deciding strategy and setting budgetary targets. If you are baffled by the figures and all the jargon, the following explanations may help clear the fog!
1. Accounting Reference Date or Balance Sheet Date - Accounts are prepared annually to a specific date – this is called the Accounting Reference Date (ARD) or Balance Sheet Date (BSD). Businesses can choose their Accounting Reference Date – typically this will be a month end.
that the accounts have been prepared by a firm of accountants on the basis of information supplied. It explicitly states that no audit has been performed. 5. Profit & Loss Account - Sometimes referred to as an Income & Expenditure Account, this summarises all the income due to, less all the expenses incurred by, the business. Rather like the hands of a clock, it sweeps up all the activities of the business for the given period (normally 12 months). The result is a profit or a loss (losses are usually shown in brackets). 6. Profit - This is the total profit that the business has made during the accounting period – in the case of a Partnership to be shared between the partners and set off against their drawings (see below).
2. Accruals Basis of Accounting & Accounts Preparation - This method records income as 7.
