Sussex Prairies

Editor’s Letter

Welcome to the September issue of BN5 magazine. Perhaps the lockdown has made us more aware of nature and the changing seasons, but it feels right to celebrate the beginning of harvest and autumn with a beautiful view of the magnificent Sussex Prairies on our cover. You’ll see an article from Pauline about their lockdown challenges and experiences on page 32, nature doesn’t stop for a pandemic and it’s been a herculean task keeping the garden at its best. On the theme of gardening, our Lockdown Growing challenge is complete, see the results on four pages of beautiful and colourful photos on page 40. Thanks to everyone who participated and to Tony Baker from SH2030. Many congratulations to our three winners. Finally, we’re excited to introduce the Movement Marathon - the brainchild of Emma Marks from Pilates Evolved. The whole event, taking place on Saturday 12 September via Zoom, is in aid of the Save the Haven appeal and we hope you’ll all take part in at least one class! There’s something for everyone whatever your age, fitness ability or favourite pastime - so why not join in and donate to saving our wonderful Haven. Enjoy September

Tea at 2

Recognising that for some people it may still be a little daunting to start getting out and about in our towns and villages, Horsham District Council is working with local cafes and restaurants to launch a new campaign, ‘Tea at Two’, to encourage visitors into our towns in the afternoons when it is generally quieter. The District cafes and restaurants will be offering a range of attractive tea time promotions from two o’clock each day. Commenting on the new Tea at Two initiative Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Cllr Paul Clarke said: “This is a lovely idea which will help residents and visitors step out with more confidence to enjoy a catch up with friends over tea and coffee in the afternoons when things are a little quieter. We have been working with our

local hospitality businesses across the whole district to support them coming out of lockdown, helping them put all their social distancing and protection in place to make this a safe and enjoyable experience. They are delighted to be welcoming back their customers with their special Tea at Two promotions.” Look out for businesses displaying Tea at Two posters and window stickers. The following local cafes are taking part: Christina’s Afternoon Tea Room and Gift Shop; Goodness Henfield; Henfield Haven; Henfield Tea Gardens & The Jam Pot; Post House Café; Relish Cafe.

White Paper is ‘Vague, Damaging and Ineffectual’

The Countryside Charity, CPRE Sussex says the Government’s plans to reform the planning system will not solve the housing shortage and could be catastrophic for the Sussex countryside. The Housing White Paper, which was released last month to ‘rediscover the original mission and purpose of those who sought to improve our homes and streets in late Victorian and early 20th-Century Britain’. However, CPRE Sussex Chair Prof Dan Osborn says the White Paper is the ‘worst he has ever seen’: ‘I cannot see how it can be translated into legislation,’ he says. ‘The problem in the UK is the delivery and cost

SEPTEMBER 2020 | News of housing. That has nothing to do with planning whatsoever.’ The Charity is warning that the proposals lack detail and could hand thousands of acres of rural Sussex over to developers who will be able to build without going through the planning process. Under the proposals, all unprotected countryside in Sussex would be classified as either a ‘Growth area’ or a ‘Renewal area’. The paper implies that Growth areas would be controlled by newly formed ‘Development Corporations’ and automatically granted outline approval for development without local involvement. Renewal areas would be considered suitable for some ‘gentle densification’. The white paper blames the local plan process for slow build rates and promises to cut red tape to free up the planning system. However, Local Government Association figures show that more than 1 million homes granted planning permission in the past ten years have not been built.

business truly a family affair. Coivd-19 impacted and changed many people’s lives; closing the doors of JD Cleaners and shielding at home was not easy. It was during this time that we made the decision to retire after 23 years of standing behind the counter. We will be spending our time with family, especially our 5 grandchildren. JD Cleaners and Henfield itself has been a huge part of my life. Many of you will remember my parents, Lester and Bubbles Deacon, who managed the dry cleaners between 1969 and 1984. As a family we lived in the flat above; in fact, they gave me my first Saturday job. In 1996, the opportunity arose for my husband and me to buy the leasehold for the shop. Many years of hard work, with the support of my parents, we built the thriving JD Cleaners of today. Henfield Helpline

Firstly a huge thank you to all those volunteers who have given up and continue to give up their time so willingly during this pandemic to help those who have been unable to leave their homes. News from Henfield B-P Guild

Much like the rest of the world the Henfield B-P Guild have had to curtail all our fund raising activities this year (including jumble sales and Marquee Hire) due to the current Pandemic. Regrettably we have also had to cancel our annual Senior Citizens Outing and Meal due to safety concerns. We are planning to hold the event again in 2021, as long as it is safe to do so, and we are really looking forward to seeing you all then. We would like to welcome Terry Cox as our new Chairman who has taken over the role from Robin Wadey, who has done a sterling job for the last two years. Graham Norris has also taken over the role of Secretary from Derek Gardener, who has diligently carried out this role for the last 25 years. Both Robin and Derek will support Terry and Graham for the next year until they are comfortable in their new roles. The Henfield B-P Guild would like to extend a huge thank you to Robin and Derek for all their hard work and dedication over the previous years, and we look forward to working with Terry and Graham in the future.

Gigabit broadband opportunity

A new roof for the village pump

Members of The Henfield Shed have recently assisted the Parish Council to make a new roof canopy over the old village pump. Using part of a donated cedar shingled Wendy House roof, they have helped to create a central feature to the raised bed of flowers and young fruit trees (established by Sustainable Henfield) on the rear garden wall of the Post Office Garden in the Library car park. These photographs show the old slate roof (with thanks to Alan Barwick) and the new one.

County, District and Boroughs across West Sussex have been working together to further the provision of gigabit capable broadband. This means that residents and small businesses in our county rural areas can now benefit from the fastest and most reliable broadband connectivity if they choose to go to gigabit. The collaboration between these bodies led to a joint investment in topping up the government’s national voucher scheme to enable it to go further for our residents and businesses. Eligible rural premises can claim up to £4,000 each towards the installation cost of gigabit capable broadband. The resident or business only pays for the ongoing broadband connection package in the normal manner. The deadline for this scheme is 31 March 2021. To be eligible the home or premises need to: be within a rural eligible postcode; receive down load speeds of less than 100mbps; apply in a group of two or more premises and; sign up to a broadband connectivity package of at least 30mbps for 12 months. This is a great opportunity for businesses and or local residents to band together and secure funding for much faster broadband speeds and better connectivity at possibly no extra cost apart from a package upgrade if enough people club

Local Gin Company help The Haven with supply of hand sanitisers Afterthought Spirit Company, based on the Henfield Business Park and producers of Professors Club Twisted Gin, have come to the rescue of the Henfield Haven, the village high needs dementia and carer support centre, with a generous donation of hand sanitisers delivered by distillery manager Melissa Webb. Henfield Haven’s Lorette Mackie was struggling to find reasonably priced hand sanitisers due to the high demand with cafes and workplaces reopening. “Hand sanitisers are essential for us, we have the café fully open and we are seeing around 250 customers a week so we get through an awful lot! We were so pleased when Melissa from Afterthought came to the rescue, the sanitisers will save us a huge amount of money.” Melissa said: “We heard about the Save our Haven campaign and we’re so pleased to support such an important local resource. During the Covid-19 pandemic we have changed part of our

production to make sanitisers and we’re pleased to donate them to such a worthy cause.” Afterthought Gin launched last year and their range of original, navy strength and flavoured gins have been a runaway success. Featuring an iconic twisted bottle, the gins are all produced here in Henfield. They have just launched three new, limited edition flavours in the Professors Club range; Summer Dry, Pink and Secret Garden Gin, all at 42%abv. Movement Marathon Saturday 12th September H

ave you missed your exercise classes and the gym during lockdown and can’t wait to get back in shape? Or have you tried some of the fantastic Zoom classes our local fitness instructors have been organising? Whether you’re a fitness fanatic or completely new to classes, the online Movement Marathon via Zoom on Saturday 12th September, organised by Emma Marks, is a great way of experiencing some classes, with the added bonus that every penny donated will go to the Save our Haven campaign! Emma said: “A large number of our clients have been involved with the Haven, volunteering, enjoying their lovely café with some families using the fantastic respite services they provide for people with Dementia. When lockdown happened in March, both Liz and I were bowled over by the community spirit within Henfield, and we were devastated when we heard that the Haven had lost their funding. “Setting up the Movement Marathon was a no brainer for us; an ideal way of bringing together Henfield’s movement teachers and fitness professionals to fundraise, collaborate, and do our bit to Save the Henfield Haven. It is a very timely opportunity to encourage the community to get moving and get healthy, at a time when our physical and mental wellbeing has never been so important.” It’s easy to get involved, just follow these three steps: 1. Pick your class (or classes - you can attend as many as you like, in fact there’s a bottle of Champagne donated by BN5 for the person who completes the most!) 2. Contact your teacher, or Emma at Pilates Evolved, to book your place. Please let your teacher know of any injuries or weaknesses beforehand. 3. Donate £10 per class and fundraise with us via our JustGiving page: www.justgiving. com/fundraising/onlinemovementmarathon Once you’ve booked your place, you will be sent a confirmation with the Zoom link and login details. All you need is a device, the internet, and your body! All classes take place on Saturday, 12th September 2020. 22 | BN5 Magazine

SEPTEMBER 2020 | Local interest of plants on the prairie. It’s still not perfect out there… with new challenges and disappointments and new demands at every turn, but out of all of it we can truly say that we have arrived at a new point in time. We don’t know where we will have to go next, or how we will get there, but rest assured we have the loyal and hard-working team behind us to do it. And we have never been anything but ambitious because now out of the embers of the ashes a new phoenix arises as we started the foundations of our new viewing tower this week! Now we will all have a birds-eye view of our garden in 2021! And it has to be said that all that hard work mulching has paid off: the garden grows from strength to strength as the wondrous big grasses and all the later perennials ease into flower in September and Autumn. You can still be bowled over by the voluptuous and expansive swathes of colour in flowers in high summer and be dwarfed by the towering architectural grasses later in the season. In both summer and autumn Sussex Prairies continues to thrill and dazzle with its unsurpassed collection of unusual specimen plants. Plants, which also look good – dead! Must be well worth a visit!

here’s one thing for sure, you cannot stop nature in its tracks. On the morning of lockdown with the view of a vast unruly prairie garden staring at us out of our window and a severely depleted workforce left to help us, Paul and I came to the swift conclusion that there was no help for it but to get the wheelbarrows out and our butts off the winter sofa and set ourselves to work! Rather like signing up for a glorified boot camp, our task was to save the garden by wheelbarrows of good wholesome mulch at a time (all thanks to Olus!) and smother all weeds in our path. Working with one other gardener at a time we Pauline McBride, Sussex Prairies set ourselves the awesome goal of emptying For events and opening times, please go to three or four trailer loads a day out on to the www.sussexprairies.co.uk borders. We certainly slept well: I think we probably slept through all the lockdown TV serials including Tiger King and Normal People. Now we’ll never know if Carol Baskin fed her husband to the tigers! And then the journey continued with titbits of information and rumour and government guidance to make ourselves Covid-secure for opening. “Here are some pictures of my grandchildren on a socially distanced visit using the many of the different shapes and colours from my garden to create pieces of art.”

arlier in the year, prompted by Pauline & Paul McBride at Sussex Prairies who donated packets of heritage seeds to local residents via BN5 Magazine, we decided to run a lockdown growing competition and asked SH2030 to help us organise, run and judge it. We asked you to submit photos of your lockdown growing projects to demonstrate your horticultural skills … and WOW, have we been impressed! From colourful sunflowers reaching dizzying heights to whole vegetable garden projects, the green-fingered folk of Henfield really embraced lockdown gardening as the following photos and comments show! Tony Baker from SH2030 said: “I have enjoyed looking at the photos which show the diversity of plants that are being grown in Henfield gardens large and small. This competition has celebrated the joy people get from gardening and it does not surprise me that results from the County Council’s recent Coronavirus survey showed that gardening was the most popular lockdown activity.” He went on: “Sustainable Henfield 2030 is a

01273 494002

group which recognises that the biggest crisis facing the human race is climate change and we believe that everyone should make an effort to do what they can to protect our fellow citizens from the famines and floods that will come if the world continues to do next to nothing to stop it. Growing plants and trees locks in carbon and in itself is a good thing. Making a home for insects and wildlife is even better. And when Covid-19 social distancing is over we will again arrange for more local tree planting, bee corridors, recycling and other green projects to protect this and future generations.” Choosing the three winning entries was difficult as the judges, Liz Hodgson of the Haven Ground Force Team, Liz Taylor and Tony Baker of SH2030, Pauline McBride of Sussex Prairies and Emma Osman, editor of BN5, loved all of them for different reasons. However, it was finally decided to award the three family passes to the wonderful Sussex Prairie Gardens to Sharon Ridgley, Phyl Stroud and Toby and Albert Bray.

OUR WINNERS “Here’s a photo of Toby & Albert’s lockdown sunflowers currently standing at 10ft tall alongside runner beans, beetroot & tomatoes all grown during the Lockdown.”

“I already have a good size veggie plot but in March turned my entire lawn over to veggies too, adopting the ‘no dig’ method. It was hard work but we are reaping tasty rewards, having planted carrots, beetroot, beans and brassicas. I’ve tried my hand at chickpeas, edamame, watercress, artichoke, honeydew melon, loofah gourds and asparagus. I’ve also replanted some of the flower borders, incorporating wildflowers where I can and leaving veggie plants to bolt, encouraging bees and using seeds for next year. My love for gardening and photography has increased 10-fold which has been a saving grace during lockdown.”

“… I’ve never had time to grow plants from seed but because of lockdown I took my opportunity. I used my conservatory to germinate / propagate seedlings. I’ve grown flowers; cosmos, nasturtiums, asters, larkspur, sweet William, delphiniums and vegetables; courgettes, leeks, runner beans, garlic, kalettes, broccoli, peas, dill, basil, tarragon and beetroot. My father died in January from dementia so I put some of my plants out for people to take, the lovely people of Henfield donated £42 to Dementia UK - so generous just for my little plants… Incidentally, I am very thankful to Sussex Prairies for the lovely seeds.”

42 | BN5 Magazine

“… We grow chilli’s every year but tomatoes are new to us... we were donated 8 plants and are growing them in an old tin bath... they seem quite happy and are groaning with fruits! While we were (and to a certain extent still are) ‘locked down’ seeing things growing like this is a real boost!”

“Here are some photos of my tomatoes that I grew over lockdown. I’m not going to eat them because tomatoes are disgusting. Mum likes them.”

“… our (just over) 8ft tall sunflower that Amelia and Jack planted. We picked up the small seedling on one our walks at the beginning of lockdown and they are very happy with how tall it has grown.”

SEPTEMBER 2020 | Gardening

“Two Geranium plants left in the ground over the winter have produced this wonderful wall of colour. ‘Cut and come again’ salad leaves – I have just enjoyed my first tasting for lunch, never grown them before but found an old packet in the kitchen drawer whilst doing a Lockdown spring clean... Ideal for growing in a small garden!”

“I thought I would enter my son Stanley age four with his sunflower which he planted with his dad just as lockdown started. It’s just started to flower and we think it’s nearly 9 ft tall.”

01273 494002

“My daughter, Daniella, is very proud of her plant. She grew this from a tiny sapling and she has done all the work. It’s a jalapeño chilli plant. Measures 115cm from soil. Currently 8 chilli’s growing amazingly.”

“The joy of a garden!”

“As our Grandchildren couldn’t come and visit we made use of the climbing frame!!”

hat exactly is a Christmas Shoebox? It is quite simply an empty shoebox filled with gifts for a family or an elderly person, wrapped in Christmas paper and delivered to the marginalised communities in Eastern Europe. The shoebox appeal is nationwide and last year over 40,000 boxes were delivered. The Worthing based ‘Link to Hope’ charity who run the Christmas Shoebox appeal was founded 30 years ago, initially to work in Romania but now also working in Moldova, Albania and the Ukraine. Their vision is to break the cycle of poverty through education and social care projects via well-established contacts in the poorest and most marginalised communities. Ongoing projects include adult literacy classes, lunch clubs, educational support in after school clubs, help to complete official paperwork, building and sanitation work. In November the ‘Link to Hope’ warehouse becomes the centre of activity as local volunteers pack the Christmas shoe boxes into crates using hand knitted hats, scarves, mittens, teddies and lap blankets as packing around them. Another team then leave Worthing at the beginning of December and drive across Europe to their local contacts. Whole villages will congregate in the biggest building, often a Church or community centre to receive their boxes; because of the long standing contacts and year round support given

to these people everyone is known and no one is left out. Any family or elderly person unable to attend will have their shoebox delivered to them. This year in the midst of the Covid 19 restrictions we are asking Henfield people to make a special effort to transform a family’s life by taking part. You will need a shoebox (around a size 6+ is a good guide), and a list of suggested contents. Hand knitted items, especially for men are always welcome and can be donated separately. All the information you need to fill a shoebox can be found at www.linktohope.co.uk or you can pick up a leaflet from The Free Church on the High Street which is open Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings 10am – 12pm and Sunday afternoons 3 - 5pm. Boxes need to be completed and returned to The Free Church by Monday 2 November. If you have any questions or need help, contact Andrew on 01273 959522 / 07564816789 or adlawton@hotmail.com

Jean Whiting

Covid-19 restrictions permitting, Lisa Hector CEO of Link to Hope will be giving a presentation about the Shoebox Appeal at The Free Church Coffee House on Friday 4 September at 10.30am. We will be serving coffee from 10am and empty shoeboxes and leaflets will be available. Please verify if the presentation will be going ahead before you attend by checking the Free Church Facebook, emailing adlawton@hotmail.com or calling 01273 959522 / 07564 816789. BN5 Magazine | 47

his is an account of a cycling trip to Palestine by local resident, Stewart Whitehead, the planning for which was reported on in a previous edition of BN5. Wow, what a trip. I almost feel guilty now, as I enjoyed this experience so much, and yet what we were witnessing was an entire country under military occupation, with the people suffering in ways we can barely imagine back home. But what was it that made it such a wonderful place to visit? Well first and foremost it was the Palestinian people. As I said to our wonderful organizer Laura at one point, I’ve been to 34 countries in my lifetime, I’ve lived in three, and I have never received a welcome anywhere in the world like the one we got when we passed through the checkpoint into the West Bank. The people are simply lovely, with so much warmth and love in their hearts. We were welcomed unreservedly and unconditionally, invited into people’s homes, fed with the most wonderful food, surprised by amazing presentations and cultural events, educated in all sorts of ways, and informed so much about people’s lives and situations. We were brilliantly looked after by our guides and drivers, who took the greatest care to keep us safe on the busy and at times somewhat crazy 52 | BN5 Magazine

roads as we cycled through the West Bank, from Jenin to the Al-Faraa refugee camp to Nablus to Ramallah to Bethlehem to Hebron and finally to Jerusalem. We also had an amazing welcome from the children at the SOS Children’s Village in Bethlehem, our chosen charity, where we were able to present them with the results of our fundraising, a sum in excess of £6,000. A huge thank you goes out to all those wonderful people who sponsored me and the rest of the group, enabling us to raise such an impressive amount. I really enjoyed the cycling too. The land was, to say the least, rather hilly, but we worked together as a team, supporting each other in every way. We had become like a family, and a family welcomed into the wider family of the Palestinian people. The landscape was amazingly beautiful too, The olive trees, planted everywhere, had a beauty all of their own, especially as they seem to represent the lifeblood of the country, with farmers and their helpers working away in the fields as we passed. Of course there is also the amazing, thrilling and spine-tingling experience of visiting some of the most famous religious and historical sites in the world, visiting mosques and churches, of having sales@bn5magazine.co.uk

the chance to wander around ancient towns and to explore the markets and traditional Arab souks, and of being able to visit and experience the stunning city of Jerusalem. We were also in Palestine to listen, experience and learn, and in spite of the incredible resilience and positivity of our hosts, the harsh reality of their lives was all there to be seen. Many live in refugee camps, and have done so since 1948 and the Nakba (literally ‘catastrophe’). Our host at the Al-Faraa camp was born there. Many of the families we met had sons in prison. There were pictures on walls and houses everywhere of people who had died or been imprisoned. There were fields of olive trees that had been burnt, there was palpable caution and tension near checkpoints and settler areas. There was evidence of the violence inflicted on residents living below settlers in Hebron, with debris as large as breeze blocks dropped on residential areas and streets below. I hope to return one day to a free Palestine, where the people are free to live with their Jewish neighbours in peace, and with the same rights as everyone else. I think it will happen, but I don’t think it will happen without a continuing and sustained struggle, and a change of attitude and action throughout the world.

Autumn

arrivals at Rushfields

There’s plenty of ideas for Autumn at Rushfields We stock famous brands of garden tools including rakes, barrows plus heavy-duty sacks. And to prepare for the new season we have thousands of Daffodil and Tulip bulbs. We also stock a mass of bedding plants, such as WinterFlowering Pansies and a huge selection of Chrysanthemums – not forgetting Pumpkins for that Halloween party. Our Pie Kitchen makes delicious home-made pies daily, and our Farm Shop offers sausages, locallysourced meats, cheeses and a vast array of Sussex produce and drink ideal for Halloween.

Social distancing advice for customers Throughout current events, we have introduced some rules to keep everyone safe when visiting Rushfields. There are two separate entrances for the Plant Centre and Farm Shop and we would ask all customers to wear face masks and observe two-metre social distancing at all times.
