If you have lived in Henfield for some time you may be able to help me out? I have been invited to write a section of a book that we at Henfield Birdwatch are publishing in 2024 to mark our 25th anniversary. The aim of my part is to show how our village environment and its birdy inhabitants have changed over time. I would love to hear about any bird or general wildlife related memo ries you have from past decades. It doesn’t even matter if they are bird’s egg collecting stories because they will tell us a lot about how things once were. Lots of us did that when I was a kid so don’t be shy!

drian Hillman, who many of you will know as one of the owners of Rushfields Garden Centre and Farm Shop, is a keen amateur photographer as well as a wildlife enthusiast. On his day off he can often be found walking locally, with his trusty Nikon camera over his shoulder. He’s captured some beautiful images, many earned with lots of patience and by returning to the same spot and learning the patterns of the creature he’s capturing. He’s also thoroughly enjoyed working with professional photographer David Plummer during a wildlife safari at the Knepp Estate, where he took the beautiful photograph of the kingfisher which is on our cover this month.

ho would have thought that a weather forecast could determine the end of the war? Set in 1944, at Southwick House, Henfield Theatre Company’s next production of ‘Pressure’ tells us the true and testing story of the world at war with an evil genius whose tanks and guns are just across the Channel. The decision of whether to invade or not lies in the hands of either an American or an English meteorologist. A huge fleet of British Empire and American vessels and armament is poised and ready to sail across the water to France and set Europe free. However, the weather forecasters’ predictions contradict each otherwho will interpret the weather maps correctly and persuade General ‘Ike’ Eisenhower, played by Ian Henham, to commence Operation Overlord? Will the forecast be the right one, or will the Armed Forces suffer huge losses at the hands of the Germans and also the weather?

High pressure on the Henfield Stage

The play is a dramatic one, depicting the Officers planning the Battle of Normandy and the D-Day landings. Ike’s temper and colourful military language are facts. Kay Summersby, played by Emily Norman, was his driver and PA. Written by David Haig, the play is developed from the central dilemma of what to do and grabs the attention of the audience from the very outset, never

Rehearsals are in full swing for this wonderful drama, and production dates are 13th, 14th and 15th October 2022 at 7.45pm in The Henfield Hall. So enthralled are the cast by the story behind this play that they have visited the true setting of the events at Southwick House and the D-Day Museum in Portsmouth. Rosemary Nice, Director, said, “Visiting the D-Day Museum and Southwick House in Portsmouth, where the actual planning took place in 1944, gives the cast a deeper insight into the events of the play. The future progress of the war depended entirely on the right choice of moment for the Allied Forces to depart. The production has been entered for the Brighton and Hove Arts Council Drama Awards competition in October”.

enfield’s Community Canopy project aims to replenish lost tree cover, helping our Parish to stay a healthy beautiful place to live for now and for our future ‘Wegenerations.can’tafford not to plant trees within our urban spaces. Studies have shown that trees within an urban environment can help buffer temperatures, through having a cooling effect of up to 12 degrees celsius in peak temperatures, thereby safeguarding the most vulnerable in our community’. (Sam Buckland, professional ecologist and tree warden)

In June this year we dropped leaflets in certain areas and spoke with neighbours and residents, many contacted us to give their support. We then went to Henfield Parish Council with an application for funds for new 25 new street trees. To our delight, the Parish Council committed £3826 to buy the majority of the new saplings, matching its 2018 statement on climate and biodiversity with real positive action – particular thanks must go to Gill Perry (Chair of Open Spaces Committee) and Malcolm Eastwood (Chairman Henfield Parish Council) for backing this Henfieldproject.Community Partnership and Sustainable Henfield 2030 have each sponsored trees, which will also display plaques to show their donation. Businesses and groups in the village may want to consider sponsoring new trees for Henfield’s Community Canopy in for 2023 and future years. Many thanks also go to residents who made generous donations to GoFundMe.

Andrea May

After working with the experienced arborculturalist at WSCC, suitable sizes were chosen such as blossoming Crab Apples, Cherries, Rowans, Juneberries and Maples. These trees will be planted and staked this winter by WSCC on the London Road verge and sites in Broomfield Road, Upper, Lower and Station Road, Staples Barn and Fabians Way.

Early this year, Henfield tree wardens met to discuss planting a new generation of street trees in the village, to replace those lost to death, felling or development, using the West Sussex County Council’s ‘Donate a Tree’ scheme. We are already lucky to enjoy the benefits of many older trees–the limes, oaks, chestnuts and beeches- some planted by our Victorian forebears. These trees clean the air, soak up flooding, slow down winds and can even reduce heat loss from building. On a simple human level, they are good for us, for our neighbourhoods, and for providing food and shelter for the outstanding wildlife we enjoy in the Parish. Across Sussex, large tree planting projects are taking place as we now recognise trees are crucial for our survival on planet earth. The other day, as I took shade on a bench under a tree, a lady also sitting there struck up conversation with me, and it felt a great example of why trees are also good for community.

This reality was clear in the searing heatwave of August – the blessed shade cast by a tree on a stretch of sun-blasted pavement, the relief offered by a walk in Henfield’s woods or taking a rest under the deep canopy of a mature oak.

the return of a special scouting tradition, the big camp! The two scout troops came together for five days of traditional camping for the first time in almost three years. It was epic in many ways! The children took part in sailing, crate-climbing, bottle-rocketing, hiking, archery, climbing, cooking and outdoor activities before sleeping each night in their tents (although maybe less sleeping and more ‘keeping each other awake’, but sleeping was the plan!). This was an invaluable experience for the children, many of whom had never been away from home without their parents before. Everyone had an absolutely brilliant time.

It’s been a long, long time coming… 27 years of fundraising, lots of heartache and problems, but finally work has started! The Scout Hut became unsafe some time ago and Scouts are in temporary accommodation, so it was great to see the demolition team in and the old hut finally down! Work on the new Scout Community Centre will start very soon, and meanwhile the Scouts will continue to meet at Hillside Campsite.

Most of the costs an employee incurs regarding their home are incurred regardless of whether they use it for work, for example mortgage interest, rent, council tax or water rates. These expenses do not increase with use, so cannot be included in the incremental cost of working from home. However, an employer can reimburse incremental costs such as additional costs of heating and lighting the work area, the cost of business telephone calls or the metered cost of increased water use.

Tax reliefs for working from home

For example, this exemption covers the provision of office furniture and equipment to employees such as a desk or office chair; stationery and normal office or workshop materials and supplies; an additional home telephone line intended for business calls only; a laptop computer or other computer equipment. This exemption does not apply to building work carried out on the employee’s home or the construction of a home office in the garden.

T: 01737 781546 psamrah@mks.co.uk

There is no tax or NI where an employer provides their employees with supplies and services that are provided other than on the employer’s premises (e.g. employees who work at home or while travelling), being provided for the sole purpose of enabling the employee to perform the duties of the employment, providing any use for the employee’s private purposes is not significant.

If you are required to work from home, for example your job requires you to live far away from your office or your employer does not have an office - you may be able to claim tax relief for additional household costs.

LLP

Note you cannot claim tax relief if you choose to work from home. This includes if your employment contract lets you work from home some or all of the time or if your employer has an office, but you cannot go there sometimes because it’s full. The presumption therefore (with Covid lockdowns behind us) is that fewer people will claim for the current tax year.

The monthly cost of an employee’s broadband connection does not change with usage, so HMRC will not allow a tax/NI exempt reimbursement of broadband costs. However, if the employee does not already pay for a broadband internet connection at home and needs one in order to work from home, the broadband fee is an additional household expense that the employer can reimburse, taxfree as a homeworking expense.

E:

An employee can either claim £6 a week (no evidence required of extra costs) or the exact amount of extra costs incurred above the weekly amount – evidence will be required, such as receipts, bills or contracts.

If you aren’t in Self-Assessment, you can use HMRC’s dedicated online site through which to make your claim: expenseclaim-tax-relief-expenses/claim-any-other-www.tax.service.gov.uk/

You may want to make a claim in respect of working from home during the lockdowns – in which case, you have until 5 April 2025 to claim for the 2020/21 working from home tax relief and 5 April 2026 to claim for the tax year 2021/22.
