Henfield Home Checks has recently moved to offices at the Henfield Haven, an ideal base for their growing business. Danielle Hope, the founder of this friendly and useful company, answers some questions about what Henfield Home Checks is all about and what they love about living in Henfield. Tell us a little about what you do:

We provide a service to support our senior community with the little but important things that make life easier for them. We offer medication prompts, help with meals, a food shopping and food delivery service or just a friendly face to pop in and check their wellbeing. There are many people based here with no family nearby so there isn’t anyone to just pop around if the phone isn’t answered or the fall alarm sounds. We are here to provide that support and reassurance to families.

What are you most proud of?

Weathering Covid-19 this year was particularly tough, but we’re super proud we kept all our customers safe and well supported whilst in lockdown away from their families.

What do you like most about the area?

We moved to Henfield from Hove as we wanted a more rural base to raise our young children. We love how friendly everyone is and most importantly how great the community spirit is!

Teaching in Uganda

Editor’s Letter

October is such a lovely month for walking and exploring; the weather is usually just right (not too many layers) and the ground is usually good underfoot. The seasons are changing, leaves are beautifully colourful and the light is soft. Find a good pub at the end of your walk and I can’t think of a better Sunday with friends and family! So, when Malcolm Eastwood at Henfield Parish Council said that the first stage their Heritage Trails project was ready to launch, we jumped at the chance of a lovely ‘countryside walks’ cover (from local photographer Mike Ainscough, see his website henfieldthenandnow.net). The walks are aimed at visitors to the area but it’s great fun to rediscover some old favourites and remember just how lucky we are to live in this beautiful part of the world. See page 24 to read more. This really is a ‘feel good’ edition of BN5 to cheer everyone up, we’ve got fundraising with Shaun’s 150 miles for Mind and the Haven; Chris’s exciting teaching project in Uganda and Jack’s fitness challenge with Aaron. So, switch off your screen, sit down with a big mug of coffee (or glass of wine, depending on the hour) and enjoy a good read; our village is full of lovely people who are doing some amazing things, it’s the BN5 Feel Good Factor!

Donation for the Henfield Haven

The local Downland Branch of the Arundel and South Downs Conservative Association, which represents the Henfield and Steyning area, held a fundraising event at The Sussex Prairie Gardens in August and donated a share of the funds raised to The Henfield Haven. The Fiesta & Flamenco Evening was a great success and was supported by many local residents. As a result, Cllr Roger Noel, Chair Jennie Ochoa and Andrew Griffiths MP presented a cheque for £1,000 to The Henfield Haven in

Roger Noel said: “Henfield is the largest village in our Downland branch and we know how critical the Henfield Haven is to the village and surrounding area. It is with great pleasure that we donate part of the funds raised at this very successful event to such an important cause.” Digby Stephenson, Chairman of Henfield Haven CIO, said: “A most enjoyable evening of Spanish food and entertainment in the lovely surroundings of the Prairie Gardens was made even more memorable when Roger and Jennie, accompanied by Andrew Griffith MP, came to the Haven to hand over a cheque for £1000. This fantastic contribution to the ‘Save our Haven’ appeal will make a huge difference as the community works together to keep the vital services that the Haven provides from closing.”

Creating Safe Routes in Henfield Can you help?

Following approaches from a number of residents, we are looking for some regular users of our footpaths and bridleways to join a Consultation Group that we are forming to establish some Safe Routes in and around the parish. The overall objective is to allow everyone to enjoy our beautiful countryside safely. Specifically we would like to get input from members of the Horse Riding, Cycling, Jogging and Walking interest groups who are prepared to speak for the wider user group; not just consider improvements which would affect them personally. The sorts of things that we would like to consider include: - using the existing bridleway/footpath network, which routes are best suited for each of the interest groups? - can we identify and publicise these Safe Routes? - are there gaps in the routes that could be resolved by upgrading surfaces or clearance activities? - could we improve safety by introducing signage to indicate user priorities or improve awareness? The objectives of the Consultation Group, which will include three or four Parish Councillors, will be to meet initially by Zoom conferencing to exchange ideas and then to establish routes and priorities so that these can be taken forward to the Parish Council for consideration. If you are interested and would like to help, please email your contact details, email, phone number and state which group you are interested in representing, to office@henfield.gov.uk

Rohan, Jan and their families have been overwhelmed by the love and support shown to them on losing their beloved Mum. They would especially like to thank the staff at Upper Mead for the superlative care they showed to her and the whole family and also to Dr Reade and the district nurses for their help in getting Mum home to us. Movement Marathon for the Henfield Haven

More in November BN5 about the hugely successful Movement Marathon; 14 local fitness, yoga, Pilates and reflexology instructors took part in an all-day online Movement Marathon, raising (at the time of going to print, just 24 hours after the Marathon finished) £2,738! The total includes an incredible £1,108 raised by Henfield Football Club Girls team who played a Football Marathon. The event inspired so many people in Henfield, with individual instructors seeing new faces in their classes as well as participation by Red Oaks residents. Emma Marks from Pilates Evolved, the organiser and driving force behind the event, said: “The total so far looks incredible, it was such fun to see everyone working together for the Haven, it’s such an important part of our village. Thanks to all the instructors and all the participants for a fantastic day.”

Paul Proptopapadakis - 16 August 1946 - 10 August 2020

Paul (pictured above in the foreground) and his family moved to Henfield having spent much of their lives in various parts of the UK, including a period farming in Scotland. Essentially a very private and proud family man, Paul was involved in three village institutions. He was a member of the BP Guild; he spent time as treasurer of the Henfield Club, where he was instrumental in turning round a precarious financial situation; and most recently he was a trustee of the Henfield Haven where great use was made of Paul’s great skills and experience in property maintenance

and leasing, dealing with the Haven’s lease with West Sussex County Council. His knowledge of property development was then brought to bear when the Haven was successful in winning at £65,000 Big Lottery award to build a new garden room. Paul became the project manager of that process, and the room is now a vital asset at the Haven, mostly thanks to his endeavours. Covid-19 restrictions meant that the funeral service was essentially a family affair, but it was testimony to Paul’s standing and affection within the community that many of his friends and colleagues assembled outside St Peter’s Church, and then attended the burial, to wish farewell to a great man, and true friend of Henfield.

Progress at the Henfield Haven - an update and thank you!

As we go into autumn, we are reflecting on the past few whirlwind months at the Henfield Haven. Since parting company with our service provider we are pleased to say that we’ve been even busier than ever and helped even more people. While many charities and businesses had to close their doors because of Covid-19 (and indeed many of the Haven’s services had to be paused and adapted temporarily) we became the base for the enormously successful Henfield Helpline. As well as helping many of our existing customers (both in the high needs sectors and the multitude of others who use our carer support and other services) we expanded to help many, many other folk from Henfield and beyond who were struggling to get essential groceries and medicines during lockdown. Lorette and our volunteers sent out food packages, made regular calls to customers, baked her wonderful cakes for a ‘Friday treat’ – not a moment passed when we weren’t thinking about how we could help. It wasn’t just about the essentials, either; we helped by providing a listening ear and some telephone-company for those who were missing their usual social contacts, as well as galvanising lots of local people to help them, many of whom had been furloughed. The lovely outcome is that we’ve grown stronger and even more people know about our ‘Safe Haven’; our network of friends has become larger and the Henfield Haven has benefitted so many more people. High needs dementia care is so important to us; it’s one of the founding objectives of the Henfield Haven. During Covid-19, the social distancing restrictions put upon us all have meant we couldn’t provide the usual respite ‘all day’ high-needs care that we are so well known for. But this hasn’t stopped us. With the Haven Café re-opening we are welcoming back so many of our high-needs customers. The services

01273 494002

and provision will grow in scale and variety, despite the continuing restrictions, in a fully safe environment. Carers and customers are coming in to join us for lunch, while their loved-ones are enjoying socially-distanced musical entertainment and friendship in the garden. Not only are we enjoying the company of our carers, we are finding that EVERYONE is coming to the Haven! So, if you haven’t visited us before, please don’t delay! The café, serving hot, homemade meals and cake and delicious coffee, is open from 10am-3pm on weekdays and we would love to see you; maybe bring someone with you who would enjoy visiting the Haven? Do you have an elderly relative or friend who you’d like to take out for lunch? Every penny goes to support the Haven and the meals and drinks are very reasonably priced, as well as being healthy and nourishing (or a cake-shaped treat!) Follow our Facebook page to see some truly heart-warming videos of our customers returning and joining in with some singing, as well as all the news about our services as they start to re-open. £5 gift vouchers are available to give to friends and relatives to encourage them to come and try us out. We don’t believe that ‘remote’ care is possible or popular which makes the Haven a vital part of our community. Everyone, especially those living with dementia and those who are elderly and vulnerable, need to have human interaction and social contact. The pandemic is a challenge, yes; but it’s the kind of challenge we are fully able to rise to. The Haven is even more essential during these difficult times than it was before. Thank you all for your support. You will have seen the extraordinary fundraising feats and challenges and the generosity and kindness illustrated in these pages, on social media and local websites; we are deeply grateful. The local community has been hugely supportive and, because of this, we have every confidence that the future of the Henfield Haven is now safe and secure.

Epic Hit the Downs MTB cycling event rescheduled for October

Cycling fans will be pleased to hear that Hit the Downs MTB has been rescheduled for Sunday 11 October 2020, after the May event had to be postponed amid the Coronavirus pandemic. Now in its fourth year, the off-road charity mountain bike challenge will see cyclists raising money for Worthing-based adults’ hospice St Barnabas House whilst taking in some amazing views along the way. This year, steps have been taken to ensure you can enjoy the thrill of the ride, whilst maintaining social distancing throughout, with additional hygiene and safety measures to keep you safe. The stunning South Downs course will test riders with its multitude of climbs and rapid downhill descents. Participants will set off from Adur Recreational Ground in Shoreham-bySea and can choose from a cool 30km route or dare to take on the epic new 80km distance. Mark Tyler from Upper Beeding was the highest St Barnabas House Hit the Downs fundraiser at the event last year with a total of £2,150. He challenged himself to the 60km route in memory of his mother, Angela Tyler, who was cared for by the hospice and sadly passed away just a few weeks before the event. Mark said: “Raising the money for St Barnabas was a small way to say thank you to them for the wonderful and

Housing numbers algorithm ‘flawed’

Arundel & South Downs MP Andrew Griffith spoke passionately in a debate in the House of Commons on 8 September in which he asked the Government to review the method by which housing numbers are calculated. Andrew called the adjournment debate – Effect of housing developments on local communities in West Sussex – to represent the deep concerns that councils and constituents have regarding the amount of housing being asked on the area. He began by stating “the planning system we have today is too slow, too adversarial and too expensive, and yet still manages to create huge amounts of blight and burden on communities without delivering the volume, quality or even type of homes that we need.” The MP went on to point out that there are planning permissions already in place for more than 1 million homes, enough to meet the country’s needs for many years. The local planning authorities’ brownfield registers have shown there is a further 1 million possible homes for brownfield sites and he called for a “brownfield first” policy. Andrew also called for greater protections of green corridors for wildlife… and finally he called for special recognition of the UK’s dark skies and suggested that the next draft of the National Planning Policy Framework be used to preserve and restore the ability of future generations to see the milky way on a dark night. The consultation runs until 29 October.

Council says NO to providing for 1,715 homes every year

The Government has announced that it is consulting on proposals to reform the planning system in England. Unless that is changed it would oblige Horsham District Council to almost double the number of homes from the current Government minimum target of 920 homes to 1,715 homes a year for the next 10 years. We understand the requirement on all councils to produce plans that show where future development could go in their areas and we recognise that strong demand for new homes exists in West Sussex. We equally understand that not having any plan would not help and would in-stead, play into the hands of speculative developers. This would result in uncontrolled development across the District. The Council will be taking legal advice before responding formally to the consultation but it does not believe that the house building industry can deliver 1,715 homes per year. It is difficult enough already to find land that has few constraints for development and to absorb 1,715 homes every year would make that task virtually impossible. Cllr Claire Vickers, Cabinet Member for Planning and Development, said: “We have been trying for a considerable time to get answers from the

01273 494002

Government about a number of things as regards to the house build numbers that we are required to provide: no answers have been forthcoming… To now have proposals that would give us almost the highest house building number in the south east of England was a bolt from the blue… We very much hope that as we are a good way through producing a new plan we can continue with that and thus put off for some years the imposition on the District of the sort of completely unattainable housing numbers that have now been proposed.”

Cllr Claire Vickers, Cabinet Member for Planning and Development, HDC Editor: Please refer to the article on page 47 from CPRH for more on this subject.

Lightship Greta ‘sails’ through Henfield

On August Bank Holiday Monday Henfield had the unusual experience of seeing Lightship Greta, accompanied by a Samba Band, pulled through the village High Street by people power alone. The Lightship was made to alert everyone to the seriousness of the climate emergency and was named after Greta Thunberg. The volunteer crew aim to pull the boat all the way from Brighton to London to highlight how close we are to irreversible climate change and huge biodiversity loss. They are also calling on Parliament to discuss the new Climate and Ecological

BUNNY GUINNESS, SUNDAY TELEGRAPH 2012

Emergency Bill. Lightship Greta and her crew arrived in Henfield on the Sunday evening, when the Samba Band unexpectedly treated those of us who went out to meet them to a chorus of Sustainable Henfield! They were relieved to get here, tired but happy, having pulled the boat or walked/drummed all the way from central Brighton, over the South Downs past Devil’s Dyke. The next morning there were some delays leaving the Common but the team got underway around 11am after some detailed Covid safety briefings and checking that there was no litter left. It was lovely to see so many people smile and wave when the procession went through the village. Quite a few cars passing in the opposite direction tooted and some passengers shouted support. We waved goodbye to Greta and the team just before the Wantley Roundabout to further drumming and smiles. It was inspiring it to see the commitment involved in this project close up.

Farewell to Tony and Pat Jackson.

One of the great servants of Henfield Parish, Tony Jackson, and his wife Pat, left the village in September to move to a new home in the west country. I first became aware of their plans to move towards the end of last year when I had a meeting regarding the Neighbourhood Plan with Tony at their home. Pat said “I am going to join the meeting” to which I replied, rather pompously, we may be discussing something of a confidential nature. Pat said well I certainly am and went on to tell me about their plans for the future. She was very excited and swore me to secrecy. I first worked with Tony when the Henfield Community Partnership was set up in 2007 to take forward the initiatives identified in the production of the Henfield Action Plan with which he had been involved. He was elected Chairman and whilst Community Partnerships had been in conflict with other organisations in other parishes Tony soon established an excellent working relationship with the Parish Council and became a role model for Horsham District. This was in large part due to Tony`s excellent management and leadership skills. He raised funds for many projects including the Henfield Community Bus, the Fantastic no Plastic initiative, the Car Park Survey, Village Signboards and the Parish Design Statement along with many others. He worked with me on the production of both Henfield Neighbourhood

01273 494002

Plans and was a great support throughout. In the spring of 2014 on hearing of the possible closure of the Day Centre run by WSCC Tony worked with others to ensure such an essential service was not lost to the community. Not only was the service retained but the Henfield Haven emerged to provide a much wider range of services. Such was its success in 2019 it was nominated to be considered for the Queens Award for Voluntary Service which it deservedly received this year. To say farewell to Pat and Tony a number of his friends met at the Henfield Haven to thank Tony for all his hard work on behalf of the community and to wish them both every happiness in their new home. Tony was presented with a copy of the Henfield Coat of Arms carved in oak to remind them both of their time spent in Henfield and the many friends they made.

New Home Needed for Theatrical Costumes

Over many years of theatrical productions ranging from Shakespeare to pantomime, Henfield Theatre Company (HTC) has built up an impressive collection of authentic costumes. If you should need to look like Henry the Fifth, Scrooge or Cinderella, or one of hundreds of other characters (when we are once again able to go to fancy dress parties), it’s worth remembering that the costumes are available for hire. However, in the meantime HTC has a problem – the store room that they are currently renting will not be available after mid-November so the costumes need a new home. The current room is a former double stable, about 20 feet square and 10 feet high – there are a lot of costumes! If you know of a secure, dry room of a similar size in the Henfield area that is potentially available, HTC would be very pleased to hear from you. In the November issue of BN5 we will be publishing an article about local memories of prisoners of war in Henfield and the surrounding villages. Many of you may have first-hand experience or memories of living in Henfield during WWII, when PoW camps provided workers for farms and local businesses. You may have been a child at the time and remember the small hand-made toys they would make? Or do you remember your parents speaking about their memories and friendships with these POWs? If so, we’d love to hear from you and hear your stories. Please email me if you can help, emma@ bn5magazine.co.uk. Many thanks.

Discover Henfield’s hidden heritage with two new trails H

enfield is a unique and beautiful village steeped in history, rich in age-old architecture and blessed with glorious countryside. Keen that everybody should be given the opportunity to experience the hidden highlights of Henfield for themselves, Henfield Parish Council in conjunction with Henfield Community Partnership and Henfield Museum is launching a series of trails which guides visitors along circular routes around the Parish, taking in areas of interest as they go. A village centre trail is already in existence and available to view on the website hiddenhenfield. co.uk . This trail, which takes approximately 15 minutes at a moderate walking speed, using your mobile phone to read the content on the website or the QR codes on the finger posts, takes in quirky facts and hidden gems while rewarding walkers with beautiful scenery and architectural treasures. Lots of residents may not know that Henfield is mentioned in the Domesday book, that evidence of early settlements date back to the Stone Age and that today Henfield has a strong arts and culture following. In fact, there are many things about Henfield that surprise even the longest-standing Sussex resident: it houses the oldest existing Scout Troop in the world, for one, and the first Postmaster 24 | BN5 Magazine

General lived in Henfield, inventing the first ever mail postmark there. “Despite it being on their doorstep, there are many residents who are unaware of Henfield’s long and fascinating history,” explains Malcolm Eastwood of Henfield Parish Council, “Our trails aim to change that by making the discovery of the village’s hidden gems easily accessible for all.” Two new trails have just been launched and can be accessed using the hiddenhenfield.co.uk website and more are planned for the future. Physical leaflets for these two trails are being printed and will be available shortly. Trail direction posts will also be installed with QR codes in the next few months. The easiest and shortest of the two new trails is a self-guided walking tour titled ‘Henfield Village & Common’. Guiding walkers on either a one-hour (2.25 miles) or 40-minute long (1.5 miles) route, it explores a number of treasures the village has to offer. These include: The George Hotel, a 16th century former coaching inn; Henfield Cricket Club, which, referenced as far back as 1719 makes it one of the oldest in the world; and Lavender Cottage, the former home of suffragists, whose business growing violets connects with the flower becoming the emblem for women’s rights. www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

OCTOBER 2020 | Local interest

The second and slightly more challenging trail takes visitors on a three-hour walk exploring the origins of the village through river, road and railway. Explorers can take in old trading routes, and the River Adur and its wildlife, as well as historic buildings along the way. The trail even offers a wet weather route for soggier days when parts of it may be flooded! The ‘River History and Rise of Henfield’ trail (to give it its official title), has 13 key points including: St Peter’s Church, originally built in 770; Nep Town, where the first Henfield residents settled; and Rye Farm, which dates back to the mediaeval period. Walkers will see Mill End (where the Old Mill is said to have blown down with a “loud crash” in 1908), pass quaint 16th century cottages and find themselves on Sandy Lane, the site of a great deal of 20th century sand mining. The trails unveil some remarkable facts about Henfield’s past and present. The story about the cat and the canary is particularly amusing and, without giving away any spoilers, it involved two passionate pet owners and a somewhat unfortunate conflict between them. All will be revealed on the walks! Henfield might be known for its history, but the village is certainly moving with the times;

01273 494002

green wayfarer markers in the village centre are dotted throughout the routes to help walkers navigate their way around and, when scanned with a mobile device, reveal further details of the village’s hidden gems. Perhaps best of all, both trails end up on the High Street, where there are plenty of cosy coffee shops, pubs and eateries for the weary explorer to rest their legs, re-energise and enjoy local treats! “Sometimes the most fascinating places are a stone’s throw from our homes and yet we never discover them,” says Malcolm. “By launching this series of trails for people of all walking abilities, it is our hope that more people will realise the beauty, charm and history that’s just around the corner. With international travel rather problematic at the moment, people are looking more locally for things to do and interesting places to explore. Henfield, with its blend of ancient and modern, offers the perfect escape and ideal opportunity to get out and about, enjoy wildlife, step back in time and learn something new. We also hope to attract more visitors and encourage support for our local businesses.” Visit hiddenhenfield.co.uk for details of the trails and for further information about the village, its history and what visitors can discover in Henfield.

FROM HENFIELD

TO UGANDA: a teaching challenge

C

hris Gibbon, who lived in Henfield for many years where she raised her four (now adult) children, has been teaching in Uganda for the past three years. She’s recently accepted the challenge of a new job in this beautiful part of the world; this time as the head teacher of a brand-new primary school for children with disabilities and special needs. This exciting challenge has been a little delayed with the onset of Covid-19, but she has used this time during lockdown back in the UK to push forward with the planning and groundwork for the school. Chris’s new mission was given a fantastic boost when she secured a very generous donation of text-books and teaching aids from a local school which was closing down; in fact, a whole pallet-load! This amount of printed material isn’t easy to jam in the average sized suitcase, so Chris has successfully fundraised to cover the £700 cost of transporting them out to Fort Portal, four hours’ drive from Kampala, where the school is based. Schooling in Uganda is very different to the UK system, with children spending seven years at primary level from age six before graduating to secondary education. The system of allowing free primary education (Universal Primary Education, UPE) is relatively new, there is a severe lack of teaching staff and in many schools it’s not 30 | BN5 Magazine

uncommon for class sizes to reach 150 pupils. Even if children are able to take advantage of free primary education many children don’t graduate any further in their learning because of family and financial pressures, especially if they happen to be girls or if they come from rural areas. Great steps are being made, but as 80% of children live rurally and 35% live below the poverty line, a huge number of children are falling through the gaps. For children born with a physical disability the outlook is incredibly bleak and many are left to fend for themselves, even though they may be bright and perfectly able to learn. The school that Chris is helping to start will be quite unique in working to break down social barriers and educate these overlooked children. It’s a far cry from Steyning Primary School, where Chris spent many happy years teaching in her role as deputy head before her move to Uganda. “The teaching structure is very different in Uganda, it’s very much ‘chalk and talk’ with vastly mixed abilities in one class,” explained Chris. “I am so looking forward to introducing some of the reading schemes and using the fantastic text books which have been donated. We still have lots of work to do, especially to address the practicalities of teaching young disabled children; we desperately need assisted seating frames, www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

OCTOBER 2020 | Charity

bean bags and wheelchairs. We really are starting from scratch so all the help we can get will make a huge difference.” The school is part of an established charity called Kyaninga Child Development Centre (KCDC). It was created six years ago as a not-for-profit organisation to provide specialised and affordable assessment, treatment, education and support to children with disabilities and their families, to give them a chance to lead more independent lives. It was founded by husband and wife team Steve and Asha Williams when they realised their son, who suffers from epilepsy, needed help where none was available. Since then more than 3,000 children have been helped by KCDC. This new primary school will come with an attached Special Support Centre, where children with disabilities can work alongside children without disabilities. There will be a speech, language and physiotherapy centre and there are plans to build a teacher training centre to address the desperate lack of qualified teachers in the area. Finally, there will be an outreach element to the school, to help those children who live rurally and would otherwise have no chance of even the most basic education. The challenge seems to be enormous and would be overwhelming to most of us. But it’s exciting and the potential impact on many young lives will

01273 494002

be life-changing. Chris sent us a simple story, which sums up the KCDC school and its vision of equality for children with disabilities in Uganda, and it goes like this: “A girl was walking along a beach when she came across thousands of starfish stranded by the tide. As she came to each starfish she picked it up and placed it back into the sea. A man observed the girl and said: “There are so many of them, you can’t begin to make a difference.” The little girl replied as she placed a starfish in the sea: “Well, I’ve made a difference to that one!” I was struck by one of Kyaninga’s ‘core values’, it is so simple, and yet sums up their mission: ‘Things get done by doing them’. They’ve found exactly the right person to lead this wonderful new school; Chris most certainly has the energy, enthusiasm and skills to ‘get things done’.

Emma Osman

Thinking about a career in care? Read on! Cherish Care is a local, family-run care company run by James and Denise Smith. The company have an impeccable reputation with an outstanding rated service and put family at the heart of all they do. A career in care is very different to many other jobs; it’s challenging at times and demands a certain type of person; but if you are suited it’s incredibly rewarding and no one day is the same as another. If you are interested, please take a look at the questions below that we’re asked frequently, you might find working for Cherish Care is the start of a wonderful new beginning for you! Is a career in care realistic for me, I have a young family? Yes, your caring nature will be well suited. We have some flexibility with the hours you can work. I’m retired and looking for some part time work, is this role for me? Yes, your life experience will help with the interesting and varied lives of our clients. There is a physical element to the job, so you’ll have to be fit and flexible. At Cherish we believe it’s important to have a life balance. Your working hours are agreed with you, so they can fit around your daily life, as well as meeting the needs of the business.

I don’t have any care qualifications, is that a setback? Not at all as we provide a nationally recognised, certificated induction. What’s really important is you have a caring and compassionate nature. Right from the start, providing you with quality training is key. From the certificated induction to your continued professional development, your training involves sessions with our qualified assessors and being out with other team members, meeting our clients and understanding their individual needs. We support you through further qualifications should you wish and provide regular updates to keep you up to date with best practice. I already have care qualifications, what are the career progression opportunities? Cherish Care have Senior Care roles available and are committed to your continuing professional development. I’m bored of the monotony of my current job, what’s different about care work? Boredom is the last thing you feel when working in care! Our clients are all interesting people who’ve led full lives and are now facing the challenges of their later years with us. This means the things they need support with are varied and there is room for creativity in finding new and better ways to help them.

Apply on line at www.cherishcare.co.uk

What is the interview process please? I’ve been working in the same job for many years and I’m not used to being interviewed! From your first contact with Cherish, you will feel Cherished. You’ll be invited to come and meet with us for a relaxed chat about what you are looking for, as well as giving you the opportunity to experience our friendly approach and team working atmosphere. This meet up is very informal, but if things look like they could work for both of us, a more formal interview is then arranged. As you would have already met some our team, the nerves soon disappear. What makes you different from other care companies? Cherish Care are one of only 3% of home care to get the outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission. The strong focus on our values and culture means we all look after each other, with no “them and us” attitude. I am worried about protecting my family during Covid-19. What safety protocols are in place for staff and customers at Cherish Care? All our staff receive training and both staff and clients have been risk assessed with plans put in place should there be any signs of Covid-19. We maintain social distancing and all Personal Protective Equipment is supplied for you. We have had no cases of Coronavirus. Our Policies and Procedures are constantly reviewed in line with the latest government and health advice. I live in Henfield, will having local knowledge about the area be an advantage? Definitely, we are building our “Cherished activities” book to reflect what opportunities for fun and friendship are available in the community, so your knowledge will be great! We provide support to people in Henfield and the surrounding villages, so local knowledge is an advantage when driving around between our clients homes. How do you support your staff to keep them happy? We are a big family at Cherish, and this is reflected in how we work together. Ensuring our staff have all that they need to feel confident in their role is important to us. We also offer some

extra benefits such as pamper sessions and help towards your MOT cost. Will I be working as part of a team, or alone? You will be part of a team of carers who visit each client so we can maintain some continuity for our clients. However, as you are working in our client’s own homes this will usually be on your own or with another team member for care that needs two people. By organising social events, team meetings, group training and having regular access to the office you rarely feel alone. Care roles have a reputation of being poorly paid, is this correct? Cherish Care pay above the national living wage, with higher hourly pay rates for evenings, weekends, bank holidays and overtime opportunities too. All your training and holiday is paid too. For me it’s not just about the job, it’s about making a difference to people’s lives. Would working for Cherish Care give me that type of satisfaction? We have a saying at Cherish that’s been with us since the start, “little things mean a lot”. Whilst we may not be making dramatic changes to our clients lives, it’s the attention to detail that means each of our clients can have a better day. Please contact Denise for an informal chat if you’d like to find out more, either by emailing info@cherishcare.co.uk or calling 01273 494990. We look forward to hearing from you. Lock Down but not out... The last article I wrote was at the end of April when the country was in lock down – at the time we were only seeing emergencies at the practice and clients were not allowed to come into the practice with their pets. It was an arduous 4 months having to perform consultations over the phone while clients waited in the car park, although not bad for the step count on the fit bit – 6,000 was easy to achieve on a normal day! However, I am told by anyone who had to undertake home schooling during lockdown that I shouldn’t be complaining. If our family were anything to go by, there were several situations that involved 2 children and an adult shedding a tear and still nobody was capable of long division by the beginning of the summer holidays… I had also written about the rise of the “zoom” call. We had just started using the platform for video consultations. They were useful at the time, but are certainly not a substitute for the real thing. Outside of work we also took part in several social zoom events, some of which were more successful than others. Quizzes seemed to go down well, but group chats with multiple members of extended family at the same time were less fruitful. There’s a reason why these gatherings only take place at milestone birthdays and weddings under normal circumstances. It’s hard enough having a one to one conversation with someone who’s auditory senses are less than optimum – add an online platform that many have never used before, delays due to poor internet connections and multiple people talking at the same time, and let’s just say once was enough! I am pleased to say that while things still have a way to go before we return to “pre-covid normality”, we have definitely made some progress. The greatest change was when we began to welcome clients back into the practice in August (certain restrictions do apply, such as only 1 client per appointment and a mask must be worn – more details on our website). It is lovely

to be able to interact directly rather than via the phone and for pets to be with their owners in the consulting room. It also means the video call is much less of a requirement! Other than the fact that I have grown a beard with an alarming amount of grey in it, the other big change since April has been the transition from seeing emergencies only to a return to our normal services. This includes routine vaccinations, neutering and dental work. We actually resumed puppy and kitten vaccinations in May with adult booster vaccinations being continued from June. At the time of writing we are still working through quite a back log but we are catching up steadily. It is a good job that we did resume puppy vaccinations when we did, because one unexpected outcome of the Coronavirus is the number of puppies that have been taken on. There has been a puppy pandemic! Understandably, lock down has been a period where many have felt they had the time to welcome a new puppy into the home. However, what we have started to see is adolescent puppies who have some behavioural issues as a result of a less than normal environment as they have developed during this time. The main issues stem from an inability to socialise with other dogs (especially those who were acquired early on when lock down was at its most strict) and from separation anxiety when owners who have been present all the time begin to return to work. It is beyond the scope of this article to discuss in detail how to overcome these issues, but if you do have some concerns, then the best advice is to discuss them with a behaviourist as soon as possible. As with all things, the sooner the problem is addressed, the better the outcome. If you have recently acquired a puppy, it is important to socialise them as much as possible and adopt a routine which is as “normal” as possible for the long term so your puppy gets used to this. If you contact us at the practice, we have several behaviourists with whom we can put you in touch. In the meantime, let’s hope that the slow progression to a return to normality continues and that the swift progression of grey in my beard doesn’t! Jonathan Underwood.

oining an amateur theatre company isn’t what a lot of us intended to do – it just sort of happened! In my case I first joined one in my twenties (a long time ago) in Bridgwater, Somerset; I had seen and heard about the fun that others were having being involved in plays and shows and it occurred to me that I could just help in the wings or go along to the set building workshops. After meeting some of the members I joined up and received a very warm welcome. As it happened I very quickly felt able to have a go at being on stage, and never looked back. A highlight of that time was performing in a wonderful, exuberant and colourful production of Godspell in Bridgwater Town Hall. To be honest, I didn’t do a lot of back stage work in my time there! Some years later I had an equally warm welcome into the Henfield Theatre Company (HTC) and since then have had a very happy time being involved on and off stage. I’ve heard several of my friends in HTC say that they only joined to help back stage but were delighted that they had bitten the bullet and trodden the boards. Some don’t do that, however, and they are very happy and active members who provide vital roles such as making or collecting props, prompting, set-building, doing make-up, costume making, setting up and operating the sound and lighting – or hosting an occasional party!

01273 494002

It’s a actually a big operation and there are many and varied roles for people to get their teeth into. HTC currently has over 150 members who range in age from about 8 to 90 – that’s one of the great things about it - those different age groups all get along so well, sharing in the goal of putting on memorable productions. HTC generally puts on 4 productions per year with an extra, outdoor play, usually Shakespeare, every other summer. It’s a busy schedule and it requires a formalised committee structure to run it effectively. It will be no surprise that I am on the Marketing and Publicity Committee and I have the pleasure to be the main contact with the local press. Writing press articles is a fairly new experience for me but it’s an interesting development for someone who just wanted to move some scenery! This year has been like no other, of course, and we find ourselves not entirely sure when our next production can go on stage. We are all ready to open the curtains on The Stepmother, that great play by Githa Sowerby; we currently expect that to go ahead in early January 2021 and will continue to review the situation. I would like to give my sincere thanks to our loyal followers in the Henfield area; in HTC we know that you will continue to offer your enthusiastic support when we are once again able to go on stage. Thank you. www.henfieldtheatrecompany.com

Jack’s

fitness

journey

42 | BN5 Magazine

L

ockdown hasn’t been easy for many of us. Sudden changes in day-to-day routines, alongside the curtailment of social events and missing seeing our friends and family alongside new contingencies and ways of living, it’s been a tough time. Lockdown has been especially challenging for those who are living with autism. It’s known that changes in routine can trigger extreme anxiety, so the Covid-19 pandemic has been especially challenging for people with autism and their families. 18 year-old Jack Cresswell from Partridge Green, helped by his mum Michelle and supported by his dad Steve, family and friends, has found an activity which has helped him enormously through the upheavals of the past few months; something which Michelle and Steve hope will end up becoming a lifelong skill and healthy routine. He has started on a personal fitness journey, with the guidance of Henfield Leisure Centre Personal Trainer Aaron Le-Flay. Back in March, Jack’s school closed and his routine was thrown into disarray. All his favourite things to do (for example, his complete love of watching trains, wherever and whenever he could) were impossible to enjoy any more, he couldn’t go out or meet his friends. It’s hard to explain Covid-19 to an autistic teenager, to make sense of the topsy-turvy world where his everyday routine had disappeared overnight and his highlyfocussed hobbies were impossible to follow. He missed his friends and, like many, many other teenagers without Jack’s more complex needs, he started to spend a huge proportion of his day playing computer games. Michelle was a regular at Henfield Leisure Centre before lockdown and like many of us recognised how much exercise helped her mentally and physically, as well as giving her a focus and some much needed ‘me’ time. She approached Aaron with an idea; would he be prepared to take Jack on as a client; a young man who could be challenging in different ways, but equally, if not more, rewarding? Aaron didn’t hesitate and Jack began his training programme. Although Jack was willing to join in and curious, the process was by no means straightforward! He had always preferred screentime to physical activity and, when they started the programme he found it difficult to deal with basic exercises such as squatting, his posture wasn’t great and it was hard for him to focus, even for short periods. However the routine of the sessions, alongside Aaron’s patient and simple instructions which he repeated calmly but with a gentle insistence and encouragement, helped Jack to focus, listen and learn. “I could see that Jack needed to feel good and be proud of himself,” said Aaron. “He’s just like all of us, we all need to feel a sense of progress, achievement and pride – getting fit is such a great way of building self-esteem, the buzz of the www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

endorphins after you’ve finished a good session also help! I have had my own fitness journey from being very unfit in a sedentary job and it is always exciting seeing people build in confidence as they realise what their bodies are capable of, and how it makes them look and feel. Jack has been no different, although my approach had to change a little to fit in with Jack’s goals; his autism doesn’t allow him to appreciate the bigger health benefits, so it had to be about the numbers – squats achieved, or weights lifted.” Aaron has been a qualified personal trainer for 10 years since giving up his job in retail management to pursue his love of fitness. He runs PT sessions from his home gym as well as PT, gym referrals and classes at the Leisure Centre. He knows more than most that absolutely everyone can benefit from getting fitter, in fact Henfield Leisure Centre is very friendly and a great place to start your fitness journey. Jack’s mum, Michelle, explained more. “Lockdown was hard for Jack. Nine hours a day in the house with no access to his familiar carers has been so tough and the focus of fitness really has got him through this difficult time. His physical health has improved so much and he loves spending time with Aaron. It really has been a life-saver for us and we are so pleased to see Jack grow in confidence, his posture has improved and he is incredibly proud of his own progress. I truly believe that exercise is imperative for our good mental health; I am so proud of the resilience Jack has shown, with the help of Aaron he has been able to walk a little taller.” Jack’s love of consistency and routine has been a real asset, he enjoys learning the techniques of each exercise and loves to know that he’s achieved more repetitions, or progressed to a heavier set weights. Aaron’s encouraging, step by step approach has enabled Jack to focus on the positive of what he can do, rather than the negatives of what he is unable to do, giving him a sense of pride. The focus is always on how far he’s come and aiming even higher. Exercise has improved his concentration, as well as helped him to reinforce some healthy routines.

01273 494002

“I notice that Jack is now much more enthusiastic for physical exercise and much less lethargic, it really has given him energy,” said Michelle. “During lockdown he joined in every one of Aaron’s Zoom fitness classes and even set up his own weekly classes, it was amazing. Aaron has inspired him, he worked out his own exercise plan and we had family and friends from as far away as Australia joining in Jack’s ‘Cressfit’ workouts in their homes!” It’s hoped that the next step for Jack, once he finishes school in 2021, will be a big move to Brighton for college, where he will live with some supervision, but more independently and with other young people. Leaving home is a huge step for any teenager, but Jack’s family can be sure he’s starting his journey to adulthood with some extra pride and confidence in his abilities. Jack’s fitness journey hasn’t been easy but he’s a brilliant role model for us all, showing that consistency and routine always gets results. His tough lockdown has resulted in a huge positive; a life-long love of fitness and a new confidence. I asked Jack what he loved about his classes, and how it made him feel. “Aaron has been supportive and kind to me and I like coming to classes. Without him I wouldn’t have such strong muscles!” Well, what more does anyone want?!

OCTOBER 2020 | Local interest

Have your say on destructive ‘reforms’

O

n 6 August 2020 the Government released its ‘Planning for the Future’ White Paper for consultation (closing 29 October 2020). The idea of this is to increase exponentially the building of new homes by scrapping the existing planning system, and contrary to statements by Secretary of State Robert Jenrick MP, minimizing the role of communities and their elected representatives in decision-making. This contentious White Paper and the draconian measures ‘proposed’ therein are seriously flawed because the authors neither acknowledge nor address the fundamental reality: that developers/ housebuilders will not build more houses than can be sold at an acceptable profit to them and in the event of diminishing sales, will reduce build rates regardless of targets set by the Government for councils. Released by the Government on the same day is the equally contentious consultation ‘Changes to the current planning system’ (closing 1st October 2020). This sets out proposals for measures to improve the effectiveness of the current planning system including changes to the standard method for assessing local housing need. Use of the Government’s proposed new method would increase current local plan housing targets as follows: Horsham from 800 to 1,715 per anum; Adur from 177 to 326 per anum; Arun from 1,000 to 2,063 per anum; Chichester from 435 to 1,120 per anum; Crawley from 340 to 598 per anum; Mid Sussex from 964 to 1,306 per anum; and Worthing from 200 to 871 per anum. This will increase West Sussex’s overall annual target by 3,168 houses (from 3,116 to 6,284 per anum) - an overall increase of 202%. Councillor Vickers of Horsham District Council has confirmed that to accommodate this enormous over-inflated target “we would need to build on EVERY major housing site included in our recent Local Plan Regulation 18 consultation” (WSCT Aug 20th). This would include mass development across thousands of acres of green fields across West Sussex including the proposed Mayfield, West Grinstead and Adversane sites.

01273 494002

This increase will have huge ramifications for West Sussex because having to accommodate these massively increased targets will result in extensive areas of countryside outside of the ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ and the South Downs National Park being designated ‘Growth Areas’, ‘for substantial development’. These would be controlled by government-appointed ‘Development Corporations’, with automatic approval for development, as proposed in the ‘Planning for the Future’ consultation White Paper. The government blames councils for blocking planning applications, however the vast majority of applications are approved, and where rejected, are turned down for good reason. Indeed, more than one million home-builds have been approved over the past decade which have yet to be built, with developers constraining supply and then attacking councils in the courts to force unwanted approvals if councils struggle to deliver their supply targets. I urge all who care for the future of Sussex, its communities, countryside and natural environment to examine the Government’s proposals and respond to these pivotal consultations. They can be viewed online at: www.gov.uk/government/ consultations/planning-for-the-future Additionally I would urge you all to lobby your local MP Andrew Griffith to question (given that the party he represents have received more than £11m from property developers since Boris Johnson became prime minister), why the balance is now wholly in favour of vested developer financial interests – so much so to the exclusion of his constituents and our local government in having any real influence over mass-build housing decisions that will profoundly impact the quality of life for all of us.

150 Miles

for Mind & The Haven 52 | BN5 Magazine

www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

OCTOBER 2020 | Charity

D

uring October, local resident Shaun Bigg will be running an incredible 150 miles over the course of the month (including a virtual London Marathon on Sunday 4 October), in aid of two fantastic charities: The Henfield Haven and Mind. We caught up with Shaun to find out more about his challenge and to find out what inspires him. What’s your motivation for this challenge? I’ve been running ‘seriously’ for the last four or five years. I love the feeling of getting out the door and exploring on foot and under my own steam. I keep finding new challenges or events to push my own boundaries and continue to learn what I’m capable of. Five years ago I couldn’t run 5km without stopping at least twice! Why MIND, and why the Haven? One of the more positive outcomes of the pandemic and lockdown living for me has been the increase in community spirit. So the Haven because if there is ever a need for community to pull together it is to help with the work that they do and the support they provide to our wider community. And MIND because one of the big negatives of the pandemic is the pressure it has put on everybody, across the nation, and services like MIND are there to help anyone who is struggling to see the distant lights at the end of the tunnel. It happens to all of us from time to time and it’s important that services like MIND continue to be available. What problems (if any!) do you think you’ll encounter? Running the marathon on Sunday 4th shouldn’t be too problematic, although I haven’t run more than 13 miles for well over a year so I may regret saying that. I was training a lot prior to lockdown for my first triathlon and when that got cancelled I carried on training regardless and completed a couple of virtual events at the height of lockdown. Running 150 miles in a month will be one of my biggest ever months in terms of distance. Managing rest, recovering my legs and feet, eating right and still getting in the miles will be tough, particularly as the month goes on. What do you love about running? Running started out as a way to channel my giving up smoking frustration but I quickly realised that the benefits of any exercise are far

01273 494002

greater than being fit. I use my training (not just running) as a disconnect from less enjoyable commitments (like work) and a chance to re-connect with the outdoors. It’s also a great excuse for a coffee and slice of cake! Where’s your favourite place to run in Henfield? I run off road as much as I can. I love the footpaths off Furners Lane, around the back of Wantley Hill and through to Blackstone. But there is nothing better than running up to the South Downs via Fulking, the views back to Henfield or out to Brighton make the steep climb totally worth it. And then it’s all downhill to get home! What do you do when you’re not running? I’m a Project Manager by trade and have worked in software and financial services for the last 20 years. As a result of COVID I find myself without a job for the first time since I was 18 (23 years ago... ahem). Rather than see this as a negative I’m using the opportunity to do something I’ve dreamed of doing for a few years and will be launching my own fitness, health and wellbeing coaching business, Bigg Change, in November. Any tips for new runners? Don’t try and do things too fast. Take your time and enjoy the process of getting fitter, running longer and exploring new places. Meet and talk to other runners, we all love talking about running and probably have one or two good tips. Get in touch with Bigg Change for tailored training plans and coaching to help you along the way! What do you like about living in Henfield? I moved to Henfield in 2013 with my wife, daughter and dog and we had our son in 2015. We all love being so close to nature and the outdoors but at the same time having our great high street, a good school, local business and services and the friendly community. You can support Shaun’s challenge by donating at the aid station which is on Henfield Common North, Sunday 4 October for the virtual London Marathon (in exchange for some cake or healthy energy food!). Any money raised on the day will be doubled by Shaun’s fitness startup Bigg Change and split between Henfield Haven and MIND. Brexit – it hasn’t gone away! As we slowly emerge from lockdown and whilst the relentless focus has been on survival, businesses face further Brexit uncertainty.

•

Crucial trade talks with the EU27 have restarted – and the Brexit Express is hurtling down the track to its final stop on Thursday 31 December. No extension to this date now – we are looking at the • end of the line. The outcome by the end of the year will simply be a binary one: Deal or No Deal. Currently, trade between the UK and EU is tarifffree. In the absence of a trade deal, that will all change come 1 January as the UK will move to World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules. Different rates of customs duty on imports into the UK from the EU27 will apply. The bloc’s average WTO tariffs are 11.1% for agricultural goods, 15.7% for animal products and 35.4% for dairy. British car makers would be hit with a 10% tariff on exports to the bloc, which could amount to €5.7bn per year. That would increase the average price of a British car sold in the EU by €3,000. WTO “most favoured nation” (MFN) rules mean that the UK cannot lower its tariffs for any specific country or bloc, such as the EU, without agreeing a trade deal. Importers should negotiate with suppliers sooner rather than later, as tariffs will be based on the full market value of the goods and services. Importers will be responsible for using the correct commodity codes, so it will be important to make sure that the necessary procedures and controls are in place to ensure errors do not occur, causing delays at ports. Have a contingency plan: allow time to make the necessary adjustments and train staff, and prepare for cash flow interruption. Checks on goods entering Britain will be phasedin in three stages up to the summer of 2021, regardless of whether a deal is done with the EU or not. 60 | BN5 Magazine

•

From 1 January, there will be checks on controlled substances, such as alcohol and tobacco, while standard goods, such as clothes and electronics, will be subject to basic customs procedures. But businesses will have up to six months to complete customs declarations and pay relevant tariffs; From 1 April, those importing products of animal origin, including meat, milk or egg products, will have to pre-notify officials and provide the relevant health paperwork; By 1 July, all goods will be liable for relevant tariffs and customs declarations as well as full “safety and security” declarations. From then, there will be an increase in physical checks on livestock, plants and other sanitary products at ports and other entry points.

New border facilities are being built in order to process the required checks either at ports, or where there is not enough space, at “inland sites”. Note that the proposals only apply to rules on imports, with checks on exports to the EU being determined by Brussels. Businesses with employees from the EU27, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein should check if they and their families need to apply to the settlement scheme. UK companies with their seat in the EU27 - the seat being where management takes place and where its decisions are transformed into the dayto-day activities of the company. Post transition and with no trade deal in place, such UK companies will lose their current right to freedom of establishment. Instead, each EU27 member state will apply its own rules on recognising UK-registered companies. Limited companies could be treated as partnerships, meaning shareholders will lose the benefit of limited liability and become sales@bn5magazine.co.uk

personally liable for the company’s debts. Some might require a cross-border merger into a local limited liability company. Whatever a business’s restructuring needs, we can readily assist at local country level. Forward-thinking businesses are strategically evaluating their level of readiness for a no trade deal. We have developed an analysis tool – BX360 – that provides a detailed breakdown of actions needed. It covers customs and tariffs, finance and taxation, legal aspects and contracts, and people implications to help businesses prioritise actions. Our advice remains the same: be prepared!
