Editor’s Letter The community spirit in this village is something that makes Henfield unique and nothing illustrates it as much as when the village rallies round to help someone during a difficult time. We experienced it last year with the Walk for Olivia and again recently when a Go Fund Me page for Peter, one of our favourite cheery Henfield friends, had his car (it seems deliberately) set on fire. People were so shocked to hear that anyone would do such a miserable thing to someone who is so friendly and cheerful. It brought out the best of the village via social media- messages of support, donations of replacement tools and a fundraising page to help him get back on his feet with a replacement car. It makes us proud to be part of this village, and we hope puts those responsible to shame. Thank you all for stepping forward to help, Peter was truly moved that so many people cared about him. If anyone has any knowledge of who was responsible then Sussex Police would be very interested to hear from you. BN5 is absolutely full this month with a record number of articles, many with a lovely autumnal feel, there’s plenty to do and see around the area. We hope you find them all useful and interesting. Thanks to all our contributors this month, you’ve really kept us busy!

Henfield Community Partnership

October sees some changes at Henfield Community Partnership, with Carol Eastwood, Chair since 2015, stepping down and Paul Crowe taking her place. Since it was launched in 2005, the Henfield Community Partnership has been pushing forward positive initiatives for the village. They have instigated and been closely involved with many important achievements, including the Henfield Action for Older People, The Haven, Skate Park, the Fantastic No Plastic campaign, Community Minibus, the Computer Club and Henfield Shed, as well as many iconic village events. Under Carol’s guidance the group have achieved a successful Leader Bid for wayfarer posts, a Hidden Henfield website and visitor economy improvements. They also achieved a Year of Culture grant for a community mosaic and set up the incredibly useful Henfield Activity Plan, linking the 120 clubs and groups in the village to foster better relationships and counter rural isolation. Most noticeable to village life will have been the events organised by the team; the Piazza Italia Henfield Tour and District Tour, Christmas evenings and Village Fair as well as Henfest street food festival and the hugely popular Memorial Field Festival.

Carol said; “It’s been hard work but great fun and I’m very proud of the achievements of Henfield Community Partnership over the last four years. I will still be a member of HCP and encourage everyone who cares about the village to join us, especially as we now face some major changes to our high street and the very real threat of a new town (Mayfields) as a close neighbour. I know Paul and the committee have some really exciting plans to push forward in 2020 and I really look forward to supporting them all in these projects.” Paul, who runs his own business consultancy company, is an active member of the Henfield Joggers and has been a HCP member for the past year. “I’m really looking forward to the role and it’s interesting to look back on the past achievements of HCP over the years. Our committee all bring some brilliant skills to the village and we’re lucky to live somewhere with such a huge community spirit. Our main drive next year will be sustainability and maintaining the wonderful environment we’re so lucky to live in. On behalf of the committee and the wider village I’d like to say a huge thank you to Carol for her great service over the past four years.” The best of luck Paul and thank you Carol, we look forward to following HCP’s progress next year.

Joan Goodsman, 1940-2019

My mother, Joan, came to Henfield in 1992, although she had worked there previously for accountant David Martin. She and I started Goodsman Letting in July that year, originally planning to open in Steyning. Then we heard of an office available in Jasmine House and the rest is history. We were very happy with the change as Henfield was welcoming and friendly and we both enjoyed living and working there. Apart from a brief spell in Florida with her brother after she retired in 2008, Joan stayed in Henfield until May 2018. She loved the village and particularly enjoyed the WEA classes at the Henfield Hall. However a terminal cancer diagnosis meant that she needed care and so she came to spend the last period of her life with me in Carbis Bay in Cornwall. Joan passed away peacefully at home on 24 July this year. As she decided to leave her body to science, there will be no funeral but there will be a get together in the function room at the White Hart on Saturday 12 October from 2-5pm for anyone who would like to call in and remember her. There will be tea, coffee and nibbles, with drinks available from the bar. I hope to see many old friends to talk about a very special person. If anyone wishes to make a donation in her memory, I should like that to be to the Cornwall

We will rehearse from 1.30pm, followed by tea from 4pm. Audience members may arrive for the tea and the performance will be at 5pm. Sidonie Winter will rehearse and conduct this performance, with organ and professional soloists Paula O’Sullivan, Rosemary McIntosh, Robert Burt and Mark Beesley. They are both pictured here with the company owners Marcus and Nellie Grimes, who are celebrating over 30 years in business from their three offices locations in Sussex.

HART Update

Since writing my update for HART (Henfield Area Response Team) last month I have had to reluctantly resign from the first responder team. It was with a heavy heart I made this decision, having enjoyed almost nine years responding to 999 calls

within Henfield and surrounding areas and devoting at least 18 hours per week to this venture, in addition to Bank Holidays and Christmas Day. I would like to thank SECAMB for all their support and ongoing training as well as my former co-responders at HART, some of whom have now retired after giving unwavering and exceptional service to Henfield. Many of them have devoted huge amounts of time to the village, going above and beyond with patience and dedication. I salute them. My greatest thanks must go to the patients who have invited me into their homes to allow me to help them in any way I can. Not to mention the laughs we have had along the way! Being able to help someone in crisis is incredibly rewarding and I would encourage others to volunteer in this way.

Kindersley Charitable Trust

The Kindersley Trust is, as many readers will know, a charitable trust, the object of which is to benefit the inhabitants of Henfield. It does not make grants to individuals but towards projects (large or small) of organisations who benefit residents of all ages in our community. Last year, grants totalling £4700 were made to The Toad in The Hole Project (£500), Henfield Youth Club for a double range cooker and hob (£2000), Henfield Cricket Club for equipment for the Colts section (£750), Henfield Leisure Centre for a fire shutter in Sharky’s kitchen (£1150) and Henfield Computer Club for a Bluetooth sound system (£300). The Committee does not make grants towards running expenses but will be happy to consider applications from charities, societies or organisations for assistance towards specific projects or needs. This year’s meeting will once more be in early December. Written applications giving details of the project or need should be sent to the Chairman, Kindersley Trust, 22 Manor Close, Henfield, BN5 9LB, to arrive before Friday 15 November 2019.

Horsham Contemporary Art Fair

Artists from the BN5 area will join forces with around 50 other artists, sculptors and makers from Horsham and the surrounding area to show their work at this annual October event. Jewellery by Henfield silversmith Alison Crowe and paintings by Gallery BN5 co-owner Esther NewhamBrown, as well as work by artists Grahame Morgan-Watson of Partridge Green and Carole Skinner-Rupniak of Cowfold will all feature.

Senior Citizen’s Outing

The Henfield BP Guild are very proud to have hosted the annual Senior Citizens outing and meal on 1 September. We took 100 of our Senior Citizens out on a scenic coach trip along the coast to Beachy Head where we stopped for a break and some ice-creams. For a change the weather was lovely so all the views could be enjoyed. On arrival back at the Village Hall we were joined by 40 more guests who had opted not to go on the coach trip. We were welcomed back with refreshments of tea, coffee and sherry. During the day the BP Guild had set up the Hall and prepared a four-course dinner, which was served with the eager help of Scouts and Guides. However we always need a little disaster to keep us on our toes and this was provided by our booked entertainer cancelling due to sickness at the last minute! Valiantly, Dan Stephenson stepped into the breach to keep us all entertained. The next BP Guild event is our Jumble Sale and Auction which will be held in the Village Hall on 12 October. This is always a great event and is one of the many ways that we raise funds. The BP Guild would like to thank everyone that helped to make the Senior Citizens Outing such a great success.

News | OCTOBER 2019 have been handed over, but once they have been, we will upload them onto our website. It is thanks to your continuing generosity that we are able to fund the reports and to commission planning and legal expertise. We have appreciated every single donation and would like to apologize that due to changes in our software and digital communication information some of you may not have received a personal thank you. We are so grateful for your donations; these are allowing us to create a strong case against a new town of 7-10,000 houses on the Sussex Weald and prove it is unsustainable and undeliverable.

Henfield & District Self Help Group

The objective of the group is to provide the opportunity for elderly or disabled people who often live alone to meet and socialise in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. We meet weekly on a Tuesday in the Garden Room at Henfield Hall to chat, participate in board games or a specially designed exercise schedule, enjoy a varied entertainment programme and have lunch. Our day runs from 9.30am to about 2.30pm. There is no membership fee but each session costs £5 which includes a two course lunch. The group, which is a self-funding charity, started in 1980 with three members and three volunteers. We now have 36 members and teams of volunteers who assist with activities, prepare meals and transport members on our minibus. Thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers the group has gone from strength-tostrength. We can accommodate up to 40 members so currently have a few spaces available. If you would like to find out more about us come along one Tuesday or call 01273 494335 for more information. We would also be pleased to hear from anyone interested in becoming part of our transport team, either as a driver or assistant.

Jackie retires from Cat & Canary

Jackie Humm, landlady of the Cat and Canary pub, has retired after almost 11 1/2 years running the pub. Jackie’s last night was Saturday 14 September when friends, family and locals made sure she had a fantastic farewell celebration. During Jackie’s time at the Cat and Canary she has helped to raise a huge amounts of money for charities including HART, St Barnabas, MacMillan and Cancer Research. She’s run countless raffles, tombolas, karaoke and charity nights and has always been able to count on her generous customers to support her fundraising. I asked Jackie what her favourite memory will be of the pub. “I have loved organising the parties and I think our Halloween party has become legendary in the village. It’s fancy dress and the costumes have got better and better - now everyone comes dressed up!” she said. “I’d like to thank everyone who got involved with the fundraising, all my staff and customers for all their support.” It’s not quite time for Jackie to take a break, because she is getting married to her fiancé Tom in October, congratulations to them both. New owners will re-open the pub very soon. We hope you have a relaxing and well-earned retirement, Jackie.

A new, unbound surface is being installed to several sections of the Downs Link this Autumn which will allow easier access for walkers, cyclists and horse riders all year round. The work is being broken down into five areas and will include improvements and repairs to a 300m section of the Henfield Car Park. As part of the work, vegetation will be removed from alongside the route to allow in more sunlight which will maximise the life of the surface and will also improve the biodiversity along the path by encouraging the growth of other plants species. The project is being funded with a £558,000 grant from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development following a successful bid from West Sussex County Council. While our contractors are working on site, sections of the Downs Link will need to be closed for safety reasons but the route will be opened, where possible, at weekends and week-day evenings. Henfield Public Conveniences

I am pleased to confirm that Henfield Parish Council is shortly to begin the renovation of the High Street public conveniences. This will involve totally new ladies/gents toilets and a new disabled facility. It is hoped that the work will commence early to mid-October. The work will be funded from Parish Council reserves and recently secured Section 106 funding of just over £37.5k from Horsham District Council. It is anticipated that the works will take approximately 12 weeks and the existing facilities will be closed during this time. There will be temporary toilets available in the library car park. Whilst the renovation of the public conveniences is well overdue, it is hoped that once complete, they will encourage additional visitors to Henfield High Street and provide much improved facilities.

The History of Henfield Talk

New shop on Henfield High Street

Described as classic yet contemporary and quintessentially British, Atty & Smart is a luxury lifestyle and gift brand which has opened on Henfield High Street. The company was created by sisters, Lucy and Charlotte, who were inspired by exquisite botanical illustrations of the early 20th Century. They said: “Having made much use of the shops and services in Henfield for the last seven years and witnessed the strong community spirit demonstrated time and again we are so excited to have opened our shop here in the high street. We are very grateful for the warm welcome from other established high street businesses, Thank you! As for our name - when Lucy’s son was little he couldn’t say ‘aunty’ and so he named Charlotte ‘Atty’. Lucy’s surname is ‘Smart’ - so together we are ‘Atty & Smart’”

Friends of St Peter’s Church event

On Thursday 24 October at 7.30pm in Henfield, the Friends of St. Peter’s Church present a talk by local historian Dr Janet Pennington entitled ‘Witches, Warlocks, and Wellingtons’. Significantly timed for the week before Halloween, this talk will focus on how our ancestors ritually protected themselves, their homes, and their animals from the malign influence of witches and other dark forces. We are all familiar with the ‘lucky horseshoe’, but what is its exact significance? And what other objects, images, and plants were used by Sussex folk to ward off evil and to bring good luck? Dr Pennington will bring along a range of mysterious items to be displayed and handled, and will also invite audience members to bring their own objects. The talk will be in the Church Hall of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Church Lane, Henfield BN5 9PE at 7.30pm. Tickets are £7.50 and are available at the door, or from Village Care. Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be served. For further details please ring Simon on 07498 789767.

Henfield Circle Dancers vote for HART

Henfield Circle Dance group chose HART from a long list of suggested charities for this year’s donation. The group felt that there are few people in the village who have not been helped and reassured by these wonderful volunteers who arrive at moments of crisis and know exactly how to treat the patient and reassure their relatives. It’s a small way of saying a big “Thank you”. The Circle Dancers are an enthusiastic group who meet on Thursday mornings in term time at Henfield Leisure Centre. They enjoy dances from all around the world to beautiful music and lots of laughter. New members are always most welcome (details from Henfield Leisure Centre).

The Henfield Probus Club

An invitation to men who are retired and looking for fellowship! The Probus Club movement was first formed in the UK in 1965 and has since spread world-wide – there are now over 1,700 Probus Clubs just in the UK. The first and guiding principle is the promotion of good fellowship and membership of local clubs is aimed at retired or semi-retired men of ‘good character’. Our Probus Club in Henfield was founded in 1995 and has a maximum membership of 50 and at present our membership is restricted to men. We aim is to provide an informal and welcoming social environment for our members, which is particularly valued by those who are single or widowers. The loss of contact with colleagues at work can, on retirement, be quite challenging for some, so joining Probus can help to mitigate that. We meet for lunch and a speaker at The White Hart on the third Tuesday of every month and we also enjoy outings and other social activities to which partners are welcome. We keep in touch with, and offer support to, the widows of former members. If you think you might be interested in joining us (annual subscription is £10) contact our chairman, Richard Oswald, 01273 492702. We look forward to hearing from you!

Isabello’s Preschool has just celebrated its first year after opening its doors in September 2018. Here owners Emma and David tell us more about their business. How did you set up your business? We moved from London to Henfield in February 2018 wanting a slower and more green environment in which to bring up our family. Our daughter was due to start school in September 2018 and meanwhile Emma was looking for a job after leaving her full-time role in London. Emma had always wanted to open up her own preschool and this was the perfect opportunity! We opened our doors in September 2018 and haven’t looked back since! Tell us about your team There are currently six of us: Emma is one of the Directors and she runs the preschool on a dayto-day basis. She has a background in running large private day nurseries and has a BA Hons in Childhood Studies. Her ethos is a blend of Montessori and Forest School and she will soon be qualified as a Forest School Leader. David is the other Director and he has an operational role behind the scenes but regularly visits and spends time with the children. Jenny and Saffron are our Preschool Practitoners and between them they have years of experience. They are fully involved in the Isabello’s ethos and are adored by our children! Becky provides us with occasional support throughout the year and she also has many years childcare experience. And finally Hugh is our volunteer helper who works with us twice a week. The children love interacting with him and he wants to become a Child Psychologist. Why is Isabello’s Preschool unique? We believe every child is unique! We are all about creating a natural and calming setting where

each child has the platform to be pushed and succeed within a fun and welcoming environment. At Isabello’s we explore the world around us and have a special focus on the outdoors, boosted by our outdoor learning activities within the grounds and the surrounding area - wellies are a must! Throughout the week our children are taught additional languages (currently Spanish), Yoga and of course Forest School. Another key element to life at Isabello’s is risk play and ‘tinkering’: the children have hands-on experience of using tools and we encourage them to assess the risk for themselves. We have a modern approach to learning and we ensure our resources are of a high quality. What do you like about being based in Sayers Common? Sayers Common is a great location, easily accessible just off A23 for those parents needing access south to Brighton or north to the M25. We have many families from the surrounding villages and towns providing a mix of different children which enhances social skills. The preschool is set within the grounds of Christ Church with plenty of natural space to explore. A quiet, leafy and pleasant location, we are within walking distance to woodlands, parks and open green spaces which we explore daily. The children love visiting the cow-field and come rain or shine, you will see us out and about! Isabello’s Preschool is part of the Early Years Alliance and we offer both the Government 15 and 30 hours funding, as well as private sessions. We are open from Monday to Friday during term-time only from 8.45am to 3.30pm. We still have sessions available and everybody is welcome into our setting.

POYNINGS PUMPKIN PATCH O

li Lee, pictured on BN5’s front cover with his beautiful sheep-dog Jip, has started a new business – the Poynings Pumpkin Patch. Organically grown on a corner field overlooking Devil’s Dyke with a perfect downland backdrop, a family visit to pick your own Poynings Pumpkin will be a really fun autumnal treat. Bright orange pumpkins are perfect for Halloween carving and some of the more unusual varieties are highly coveted by the top chefs. This short window of seasonal food is a real highlight in a foodie calendar, as well as being enormous fun for those who are more interested in carving and spooking! Oli is a local farmer, his family have farmed at Manor Farm in Poynings for the past four generations. He’s growing organic pumpkins for the first time this season and the crop has been a bumper one. There are plenty of varieties to choose from (although you’ll have to hunt for them, but that’s half the fun!) with some wonderful names including Champion, Wicked, Casperita and Goosebump. After gaining a degree in agriculture in Shropshire, Oli worked in New Zealand and Australia on cattle stations and dairy farms before returning to Manor Farm to work with his dad, Mark. their flocks of sheep grazing at the foot of the Downs between Poynings and Fulking. Oli’s Pumpkin Patch is only open during October, so don’t miss the opportunity to pick your own perfect pumpkin. Bring wellies (it could be muddy in the field) and look out for Oli’s wooden pumpkin-shaped ‘Squash Shack’ (complete with woodburning stove) where you can weigh and purchase your prize pumpkin. At the Squash Shack you can also purchase carving kits at ready to create your very own spooky sculpture! At weekends there will be hot food stalls selling lamb, beef and veggie burgers from local producers Lordington Lamb, along with hot and cold drinks. Oli will be raising money for local charity The Henfield Haven at the Royal Oak with a ‘guess the weight of the pumpkin’ competition, where you can win a meal for two kindly donated by the Royal Oak in Poynings. You’ll find Poynings Pumpkin Patch just off the Poynings Roundabout (from Henfield direction, turn left at the roundabout just after Rushfields and the entrance to the field is on your right). Anxiety Workshop

As mentioned in last months issue I am presenting a workshop/talk on the topic of anxiety. From my experience this condition is becoming more prevalent and more clients are experiencing the debilitating effects it can have on their day-to-day lives. Anxiety is an emotion we will all be familiar with and this workshop will initially look at the biological purpose of anxiety and why all of us, to some lesser or greater degree, experience it at certain levels. It will then briefly look at the neuroscience and the automatic process that triggers the uncomfortable feelings that are experienced. Increasing our understanding of this can start to help reduce the fear that anxiety can become overwhelming. The workshop will then move on to the physiological symptoms and look at what happens to the body in response to the triggers and why. Once we have greater knowledge of what is happening we can begin to normalise this process and reduce the sense of uncertainty around coping with these symptoms. We will then explore the possible impact anxiety can have on individuals and how this affects, and potentially restricts, the way they live their lives. People who suffer from anxiety can experience life as very difficult and challenging. They sometimes find it so debilitating that they are unable to leave their homes, engage in social

activates, foster healthy relationships, maintain gainful employment and many different things that others, who don’t suffer from anxiety, may take for granted or find less of a challenge. Finally the workshop will look at what can be helpful and what might be unhelpful. This could be different things for different people and we will look at how anxiety can affect people in these different ways. Often things that might feel useful and supportive to one person may have the opposite effect on another. This workshop will take place on Tuesday 15th October, starting at 6pm and finishing at 7.30pm. It will be held at Henfield Medical Centre and will be most beneficial to those who are suffering from anxiety and the people who are supporting them. If you feel you would like further information you are very welcome to contact me. Numbers will be limited so early booking is recommended and this can be done by contacting me either by email or text on the contact details below. ickets for the new Horsham District Community Lottery are now on sale! This online lottery is a great way to support local community groups and charities in the Horsham District. Lottery ticket buyers could win a weekly prize, including a £25,000 jackpot! Anyone buying a £1 ticket can select the community group they want to support from those registered on the website. 50p of the £1 ticket price goes directly to the ticket buyer’s

The rest of the money goes towards administration, VAT and of course prizes! It’s free for eligible community groups to register for the Horsham District Community Lottery and more are encouraged to sign up. Currently there are five Henfield community groups registered as a good cause for you to support:

Henfield Youth Club

Know Dementia

We’ve been providing a youth service since 1952 for our local young people, who are at the heart of everything we do. Alongside our fun, creative and varied programme we can also offer one to one support where needed. We run three groups a week offering two sessions for children ranging from 7½ up to 18 years. On Monday evenings we offer project nights for more specific activities such as baby-sitting courses, cookery courses and CV writing. More recently we have been offering support to parents in what can be a very difficult time bringing up teenagers, as we believe that a whole family approach is needed. This is offered in a non-judgemental way in a safe space to explore solutions or just to have a friendly ear to listen. We hope to extend our service further and open more often, especially after school. To do this we will need to make some changes to the layout in our building. We very much need support in the way of funding to help us to continue with our much-needed service in our rural village. Thank you so much in anticipation of your support.

Know Dementia has been based in Henfield for over seven years now and has been providing much needed advice and support to people living with dementia and their family members/carers in the village and the Horsham District at large. This is achieved through our 14 Memory Moments Cafes, Sporting Moments sessions or one of our dementia choirs (our Musical Moments). We call these ‘moments’ as we aim to create good moments away from the daily challenges of living with the disease. The support the charity provides enables people living with dementia and their family members/carers to have quality time together, build new relationships with others in a similar situation and engage in meaningful activities, especially using music and rhythm to engage all the senses and evoke strong memories, and to encourage social inclusion. Our Memory Moments Café in Henfield is held once a month at Corpus Christi Church Hall from 2pm to 4pm. The money raised from the Horsham District Community Lottery will help us continue supporting our Memory Moments Café in Henfield and our Café in Southwater, along with our Sporting Moments session, also in Southwater. www.knowdementia.co.uk

OCTOBER 2019 | Charity

The Henfield Haven

Henfield Cricket Club

In 2015 the local community took over the management and operation from WSCC of what was then the Henfield Day Care Centre. Relaunched as the Henfield Haven it is now jointly run by the Henfield Haven Charitable Incorporated Organisation, the trustees of which are all local people, and Impact Initiatives, a Sussex-based charity that manages the day to day services that the Haven provides. The Henfield Haven is now a thriving and active centre of our village life, with a café serving refreshments and meals; a wide range classes and activities; and support for carers. On three days per week there is specialist high needs care, including dementia care, which has proved to be a vital service to our community. As well as maintaining the premises there is an ongoing need to improve the facility and the range of services on offer. All the funds raised by the HDC Lottery will be used by the CIO and Impact for this purpose. The first major project will hopefully be to convert our toilet and shower room into a fully compliant disabled facility. Thank you for your support.

Formed in 1771, Henfield village cricket club is one of the oldest in the world and it provides a much loved and valued sporting and social service for Henfield. We need your help so that we can continue to run the Club, and fund the run-in to 2021, which will be our 250th Anniversary Season. We have plans for expanding and improving our slightly creaky old pavilion, which is a Henfield land-mark. For this 2019 season we ran three Men’s Saturday league teams competing in the Sussex Cricket League and our first team secured promotion! Our Women’s 1st XI play in the Sussex Cricket Foundation Women’s League, and we also have a thriving and competitive Colts section for young cricketers with age groups from Under 9 through to Under 16. We always welcome new members, both playing and social. Many of our members are nonplaying and support our teams at home and away matches, enjoying our bar and wonderful location at Henfield Common. See our website for details www.henfieldcricketclub.com Thank you so much for your support and good luck!

The Warren Playgroup Warren Playgroup is an established part of the community in Henfield having been at its current location in Church House since 1977. The playgroup is an independent charity, run and staffed by qualified professionals and assisted

by a Parent Committee, which is key to the fundraising which supports the playgroup. We are lucky to have a bright and welcoming hall situated within a beautiful part of the village. However, we would like to enhance the children’s learning further by creating an ‘outdoor classroom’ behind Church House, enabling us to educate them in a woodland-learning environment, introduce outdoor activities and nurture achievement through the ‘Forest School’ ethos. In order to do this, we need to raise an estimated £4,500 to make the proposed site safe and secure for the children, and to purchase the necessary equipment. Please support us in our aim as we believe that this will not only be an amazing resource for the playgroup but for the community as a whole.

C

ommedia dell’arte was a form of professional street theatre which developed in Italy during the 16th century; it involved improvisation around recognised plots, acrobatics and general larking around - but the essential ingredient was a lot of comedy. It spread around Europe and, in England, it developed into that much loved genre, pantomime. It continues to influence theatre to this day, and not just in the form of panto; the next Henfield Theatre Company (HTC) production being a case in point. One Man, Two Guvnors, by Richard Bean, is a modern story but it is based on the 1743 Commedia dell’arte play, The Servant of Two Masters, by Carlo Goldoni. The modern version was first presented by the National Theatre in 2011 to rave reviews. It’s a mad mixture of farce, slapstick, pantomime, music hall and audience participation and the Henfield production is going to have a real live skiffle group to punctuate the proceedings. The band is relevant to the storyline because it centres around the life of Francis Henshall who is a former skiffle player looking for other work in 1960s Brighton. His hunt goes rather too well because he ends up with two employers who he desperately wants to avoid knowing about each other. The production is directed by Peter Ingledew, long standing actor and director with HTC and other companies and he is really enjoying

46 | BN5 Magazine

getting to grips with the marvellous characters in One Man, Two Guvnors. These range from the unfortunate Francis Henshall to the hard nut gangster Charlie the Duck and the ridiculous amateur actor, Alan Dangle. The two “guvnors” are, an upper class twit called Stanley Stubbers and another gangster called Roscoe Crabbe who, it turns out, is really his own twin sister, Rachel Crabbe, in disguise – that’s because Roscoe had been killed by Rachel’s boyfriend – who happens to be Stanley Stubbers. Still following this? You really need to see it; It’s riotously funny. The Brighton theme continues with the sponsor of this production. Local company BrighthelmStone, manufacturers of antique reproduction stone ware, have kindly sponsored One Man, Two Guvnors. Their name is derived from the ancient fishing village which grew into the Brighton that we know today. One Man, Two Guvnors will be staged at The Henfield Hall from Thursday 17 to Saturday 19 October, starting at 7.45pm. Tickets, priced £8 and £10, are available from the box office at Stevens Estate Agents, Henfield High Street (01273 492141), or online at www.henfieldtheatrecompany.com. e’re delighted to report that Henfield is getting itself on the refill map as part of Refill Horsham District! So how does it work? Participating cafes, bars, restaurants, banks, galleries, museums, and other businesses simply register to be a Refill Station by contacting Refill Horsham District (details below). Their location is then pinpointed on the Refill App for users to find. They’ll also have a sticker in their window which alerts passers-by to the fact they’re welcome to come on in and fill up their bottle – for free! Refill Horsham District was launched on 8 July 2018 and now several Henfield businesses are joining the fight against plastic pollution. So far Henfield Library, The George, The Post House Café, Relish Café and Henfield Tea Rooms all offer free tap-water refills and are helping to make it the norm to carry a reusable drinks bottle. And if you are going out and about or further afield, other local venues that have also signed up include The Fox in Small Dole, The Hub at Beeding, YHA Tottington Barn and St Michaels and All Angels Church in Partridge Green. You can purchase a reusable water bottle locally in either Hamfields Home & Garden or one of the ‘Chilly’ bottles on sale in Cinder Rose. Refill Horsham District is organised by Kinder Living and if you would like to add your tap to the map and help prevent plastic pollution you can join the refill revolution by emailing refill@ kinderliving.co.uk

Did you know? In the UK, less than 30% of people refill their reusable water bottles, even though we have some of the best quality tap water in the world. The average person in the UK will use 150 plastic water bottles every year. If just one in ten Brits refilled once a week, we’d have 340 million less plastic bottles a year in circulation. By swapping to a reusable water bottle you could save as much as £149.77 per year. The average person in the UK buys an estimated 2.8 bottles of water every week. Over a whole year that’s enough plastic bottles to stretch the length of a blue whale. www.refill.org.uk www.facebook.com/refillhorshamdistrict/ www.bbc.co.uk/plasticwatch

OCTOBER 2019 | Charity

A message from Doctor Jonathan Leung

I

AIR AMBULANCE KENT SURREY SUSSEX

t is such a privilege to be part of the team as a doctor here at the charity, helping people in their true moment of need. In Kent, Surrey and Sussex, around 2,500 people call 999 every day. Our own dispatchers screen all of these calls and will send one of our crews to help people who are critically unwell or severely injured. Our highly skilled pilots then work as fast as possible to get the medical team to the scene. All of our pilots are highly experienced – and they need to be, as they often need to land in challenging places. Each of our medical teams operate with a doctor who usually specialises in anaesthesia or emergency medicine, and a paramedic accustomed to challenging environments and trained in critical care. Together, they bring advanced care out of the hospital and directly to the patient – saving precious time and giving them the best possible chance. For our patients, every second really is precious. They may need to be placed into an induced coma to prevent further swelling from a brain injury. They may need a complex surgical procedure to enable them to breathe. They may even need an emergency blood transfusion to help replace what they have lost. Even in a hospital, these procedures can be demanding. Our medical teams provide this

01273 494002

treatment in all weathers and environments – including at night and potentially in fields, woods or on remote pathways. They are always ready to respond, whatever the circumstances. And their work doesn’t end there. After initial treatment at the scene, the priority moves on. Our medical teams will decide which hospital will be able, and available, to provide the best care for the patient’s ongoing needs. Our pilots then need to work fast again to complete this vital hospital transfer. Every day, I work with my team to provide the best possible care to our patients. It’s great to know that the people of Kent, Surrey and Sussex are working with us too, and helping us to continue what we do. Would you like to hear more? If you are a member of a local group, club or society, then you can book a talk with us - free of charge. Our volunteer speaker will visit you and talk about how we work, innovate and save lives. It promises to be an interesting and inspiring meeting for your members, whilst enabling us to raise vital awareness of our charity. If you would like to hear more about us, then we would love to hear from you. Get in touch now to book a talk at a time and place that suits you on 01634 471 900 or talks@aakss.org.uk

Osteopathy for riders

I have been working with posture and biomechanics throughout my career; with over 25 years as a riding instructor and 16 years as an Osteopath. Good posture keeps bones and joints in the correct alignment so that muscles are being used properly. These good biomechanics help to reduce the abnormal wearing of joint surfaces, aid muscle health and fitness, facilitate good circulation and good homeostasis, as the body is working at its most efficient state. The body is a dynamic structure. So, to be static takes energy to stabilise, the muscles are required to shorten to create stabilisation. If the muscles are constantly being required to contract, and not so often asked to lengthen, then the muscle stays in a semi-shortened state. The most common example of this is tightness across the shoulders when the arms are raised for long periods. If the body is stabilised in an unbalanced posture for a length of time overworking some and shortening others, this can cause stress which can often lead to pain and damage which can be just as debilitating as an acute injury. However, since the body is a dynamic structure that constantly strives for good health, posture can be changed and improved whatever age or fitness. In equitation there are two biomechanical systems constantly influencing each other, Is your posture affecting your horse or vice versa? Book in a free spinal health examination during October only. For further enquiries about horse and rider, please contact Sussex Osteopath by phone or email.

COMMUNITY SPEEDWATCH

O

ver the last few months you may have noticed groups of two or three locals wearing Hi-Vis jackets pop-up in and around the village waving a Laser speed gun and a clipboard. These individuals are part of Henfield Speed Watch which has been set-up by the Parish Council in response to complaints from residents about speeding and parking issues. The aim of Henfield Speed Watch is to: increase public awareness of inappropriate speed; reduce the speed of vehicles to the speed limit; improve the quality of life for their local communities; and ultimately to reduce death and injury on the roads. The Police and Parish Council jointly identified key areas of concern within Henfield and initially five sites have been identified, authorised and approved by Sussex Police. Two of the five sites are on the A281: entering the village from the north at Deer Park roundabout and from the south on the Common. Both these sites are in a 30mph zones and vehicles are only recorded if they are exceeding this speed limit and are referred to the Police with the aim of educating drivers to reduce their speed.

56 | BN5 Magazine

In cases where education is blatantly ignored and evidence of repeat or excessive offences is collated (even across county borders), enforcement and prosecution by Sussex Police will follow. Locals walking past teams have been most supportive and the team have been asked if they can come and do “our road”. The answer is yes we can, if the site is authorised and approved by Sussex Police and we get more volunteers. Without volunteers we can only manage what we’re doing. There are two ways in which we can help Henfield Speed Watch. Firstly, if you have the odd hour or two then please volunteer and become part of the Speed Watch team. If you don’t have the time to volunteer you can still help by ensuring that as you drive in and around the village you stick to the speed limit – we can all be Speed Watchers! To join please visit www.communityspeedwatch. org and go to the register tab and choose join an existing group. If you need further information please contact Henfield Parish Council at office@henfield.gov.uk or call 01273 492507.

OCTOBER 2019 | Local history

The Heritage of Horsham District in 100 Objects

A

s part of the Horsham District Heritage Forum, Henfield Museum and Friends have been involved in preparing for this project for the Year of Culture 2019. Starting with a major exhibition now showing at Horsham Museum, the accompanying book will be released in October, followed by a selection of the objects being exhibited at Henfield Museum. The exhibition uses objects to explore the fascinating and often little-known heritage of the District. Combining objects, photographs and paintings, it will be a real eye opener even for those who think they know the District well. 204 Square miles, at least 100 million years, and only 100 objects to explore and explain the rich and fascinating story of Horsham District’s Heritage... Member organisations of the Horsham District Heritage Forum were asked to nominate their “10 most interesting or important cultural objects”, with a selection of these then being selected for the exhibition and book. The replies revealed a broad and deep heritage that makes the District such a fascinating place in which to live. For Henfield’s part, how many knew that the museum’s one-off musical instrument - the Change eight-bell set - is recognised as nationally significant? Or that the Union flag used at St. Peter’s Church each Remembrance Day was the very flag used to drape over one of four ‘Unknown Warrior’ coffins, ready for the selected one to be interred at Westminster Abbey? (See the full story at www.henfieldbn5. co.uk/latest-news/the-unknown-warrior-thehenfield-connection/) Or that the guestbook of Backsettown, residence of famed local

01273 494002

actress, writer and suffragist Elizabeth Robins, shows that the writer H.G. Wells and leading suffragettes Emmeline Pethick Lawrence, Mabel Tuke and Christabel Pankhurst all met there with Robins on one notable day in May of 1909? Or that Henfield’s famous violets were exported worldwide and gifted to Queens? The 100 objects are like points on a compass; directing the visitor across a broad heritage landscape. The exhibition, with its strong visual images and outline, is in effect a visitor centre to the District’s heritage, and the forthcoming book, on which it is based, will be the travel guide. Featuring over 30 of the 100 selected objects, other items from the district include cricket stumps that formed a shop sign -an introduction to the sporting heritage of a game first recorded in the District nearly 300 years ago. Or the Horshamosaurus, a dinosaur named after the town, portrayed through a specially commissioned painting of the creature. The Horsham exhibition runs until October 12th, after which the Henfield objects and a selection of others from the district will be displayed at Henfield Museum. The accompanying book will include large pictures and put the objects into context within the wider history of the district. Priced at £19.99, it will be released at Parham on October 7th and be on sale at Horsham and Henfield Museum (in addition to other local booksellers and institutions). We hope it will make the perfect Christmas present!

New book by local author

Ian Ivatt W

ith the possible exception of Winston Churchill, David Lloyd George has been the subject of many books about his political and private life over many years. This new book, entitled The Financial Affairs of David Lloyd George, is published by Welsh Academic Press. It is available directly from them, and also in all good book stores and usual online outlets. The book provides another insight into Lloyd George’s activities by way of his money dealings, share purchases, newspaper acquisition, to really break new ground, and contains fresh information in detail about his fruit farming and horticultural endeavours after he lost power in 1922. He then, literally, planted his roots in southern England, just outside the Sussex county boundary, in the village of Churt, near Farnham. This book attempts to address one basic question, at least on financial terms; how did the relatively non-wealthy indentured pupil of a north Wales solicitor manage to reach the heights of Prime Ministership of Great Britain, with the inherent financial benefits. The book encompasses questions over share ownership and dealings, inheritance of assets, newspaper proprietorship, life assurance arrangements, and of course the (by now) well known Marconi share and sale of honours scandals. The chapter dealing with Lloyd George’s horticultural interests includes newly researched information about crop yields, manurial benefits, bee-keeping and honey yields which has been achieved by the study of privately held records dating from the 70 | BN5 Magazine

late 1920s through to the early 1940s, which were made available to me in early 2014, and provided an economic insight into the viability of the fruit growing business, retail outlets, and what was undertaken on only part of the entire 850 acre estate. The pages portray a financial analysis of the great man, providing some underlying reasoning and background to such aspects. I am the founder and Chairman of the Steyning History Society and had a career as a chartered tax accountant, previously practicing in Steyning High Street, but have now retired and am living in Small Dole. I am familiar with money terms and patterns, and thus felt more than adequately equipped to cover this largely untapped part of the Lloyd George life story. I have written many historical and political articles over the years, and also six books, mainly confined to local interests, including a children’s book, The Missing Satchel, for ages between 3 and 7 and The Race, about the historic Easter Monday Walking Races. The races started and ended in Steyning, passing through Ashurst, Partridge Green, Henfield and Upper Beeding, and were very well attended and avidly supported. This race is now no longer run, but the book covers the whole history of this particular sporting event and its personalities, from inception of the races in 1903, and includes many photographs of local contestants. Both earlier books were published by Vernon Books Ltd. and are still in print, and available directly from me.

Library...books are just the beginning “The only thing you absolutely have to know is the location of the library”

W

ALBERT EINSTEIN

e are extremely fortunate in Henfield to have our own Library, a warm and welcoming community hub which is wellstocked with a huge range of books to borrow. But are you aware of all the other fantastic services it has to offer? Library services have evolved massively over the years and Henfield Library is right up there, keeping-up with the times. There are a variety of activities held in the library on a weekly and monthly basis for all ages. Baby Rhyme Time for babies and toddlers is held every Thursday (10.15 to 10.45am) and is the perfect introduction to the joys of language, as well as a good way to meet other parents and carers. For the older, independent reader, Henfield Library takes part in the children’s annual Summer Reading Challenge - an exciting reading adventure with rewards. There’s also a Children’s Board Games club on Saturdays (10.30am to 12pm, term time only), a toy library, and access to ‘Micro:bit’ - a tiny programmable computer for

72 | BN5 Magazine

children to learn about coding. The library also hosts occasional children’s activities with stories and craft. For adults, the Knit & Natter group is held on the first Tuesday of every month (2 to 4pm) and it’s a great opportunity for like-minded crafters of all persuasions (not just knitters), to get together. The library hosts two reading groups and although these are both currently full, staff can add your name to the waiting list or may be able to put you in touch with a private reading group. Alternatively, why start your own reading group? It’s a great way to meet people and share your love of books. The library will loan you the books and staff can suggest titles if you wish. You can access free WiFi at the library and if you’re a library member you can also use the library’s computers. There’s also a printing, scanning and photocopying facility available at a reasonable cost. Henfield library is a gateway to a huge amount www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

of information. Members can access a range of digital and physical resources free of charge, whether you’re tracing your family tree (via Ancestry) or carrying out consumer research (via Which?). Library staff can also point you in the right direction if you are looking to find out about local events, source council information, investigate local history, or research a new hobby. There’s a selection of DVDs and audiobooks on CD to borrow, as well as online e-publications including newspapers and magazines. They also sell greetings cards, shopping bags, children’s activity books, wall charts and local history books. And then there’s the books! Our library stocks in excess of 12,000 fiction and non-fiction books and you can borrow up to 20 books (or 10 eBooks) for 3 weeks. If the book you would like is not on the shelf, it can be reserved or ordered in from other libraries including the British Library! There is an excellent West Sussex Library App which gives you the facility to reserve, borrow or renew a book straight from your mobile or tablet. West Sussex libraries have been working closely with health professionals to produce a ‘Reading Well’ programme - a range of books covering mental health, dementia, long term conditions as well as ‘Reading Well’ for young people. There’s also a ‘reminiscence collection’ which consists of objects, books, music, jigsaws and pictures

01273 494002

which help to re-awaken people’s memories of their experiences and lives. There’s a lovely children’s corner where they can sit and explore books and the library is part of the Bookstart scheme which gives free books to every pre-school child in England and Wales, as well as free packs for children with additional needs, tips and guidance on reading together, resources and activities, and much more. If you have not been offered this service, contact westsussex.gov.uk. The library is fully wheelchair accessible and for those with difficulty getting to the library (for example due to age or disability), a free book delivery service is offered by friendly volunteers – speak to staff if you would like to benefit from this Home Library Direct service. Staff are more than happy to refill water bottles for free as part of the national Refill campaign. To take advantage of all these fantastic resources and more, pop into Henfield library which is open Monday to Friday 10am – 5pm and Saturday 10am to 2pm. The friendly members of staff Sallyanne, Shirley, Lucy and Tracey – will be more than happy to sign you up for free membership (on production of current ID), renew lapsed membership or chat to you about volunteering options within the library.

Property Matters The old adage that a week is a long time in politics has certainly rung true of late – following his successful Conservative Party leadership campaign, the new Prime Minister has brought with him a fresh and tougher approach to Brexit. Only time will tell as to the long-term economic implications of the UK departure from the EU, but it will inevitably lead to change and where there is change, businesses and business-owners will rely more heavily on advice from their professional advisors. On the property front, a couple of matters this month… For personal taxpayers, Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is presently paid anywhere between 10 and 22 months after the date of sale. However from 6 April next year, this all changes. The payment date for CGT on residential property sales is brought forward and becomes 30 days from date of disposal.

The second issue concerns landlords, who are on the receiving end of a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) from their tenant. Insolvent businesses proposing a CVA can close underperforming stores and negotiate rent reductions, which clearly directly affects landlords. If you are a landlord in this situation, there are steps you can take to mitigate the impact on your own bottom line. Depending on your original tenancy agreement, you might be able to take action against your tenant to recover possession of the premises before the CVA is approved. However, more usually, you will need to do the following: 1.

Act promptly. A company proposing a CVA need only give creditors 14 days’ notice of the meeting where creditors will consider and vote on the proposal.

2.

Decide whether to regain control of your property. The implementation of a CVA is a ground for forfeiture in many leases.

For many of the 1.2m disposals of residential 3. property in an average year, there will be no liability on the disposal - having been occupied throughout the period of ownership as the main residence of 4. the owner or owners. However, absence working abroad or elsewhere in the UK, divorce/separation or other issues may well affect entitlement to relief. Buy-to-let property owners will of course be 5. affected. In order to establish whether tax is payable or not on a disposal, the sale of the main residence must be reviewed in case the gain attracts partial relief rather than full relief. If you are planning on selling a property, you should therefore allow time to collate the relevant information to enable the tax position to be assessed and calculated in good time for the 30 day deadline.

Identify other similarly affected landlords you could collaborate with, to reject or seek modifications to your tenant’s proposals. Be prepared to submit expert evidence to quantify the value of claims in the CVA. This will increase your voting strength and maximise your own ascertainable claim. Analyse the impact of the CVA against alternative insolvency regimes. It might be that other options are more beneficial to you, which may affect your voting decision.

Landlords’ responses to CVAs will differ from proposal to proposal. To get the best protection and outcome, you should participate in the approval process for the CVA and fully exercise your rights to make representations and vote.
