This issue of BN5 is our 166th. Nothing remarkable about that number, but it has been a month like no other and this magazine reflects these changing times. As we go to print, we have been three weeks in lockdown and life has changed immeasurably. We have started to get used to new ways of living and working, while each day we see horrifying news of the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on our television screens. We live in fear of the effect it may have on our village, on our friends and our families and our precious NHS. We are learning gratitude, to live day by day and to enjoy small pleasures in life. These times are bringing out the very best in Henfield and we hope this is reflected in the pages of our magazine; from beautiful paintings to the wonderful work done by volunteers and our local businesses to keep our village going. This month there are no ‘events pages’ - instead we bring you a pull-out in the centrefold of local businesses who are operating to bring you food, essentials and useful goods and services during the lockdown. Keep well, stay safe and please, stay at home if you can - for everyone you love.

Hear to Listen Nicki Dowd, Registered Counsellor in Henfield What strange times we are living in! As I sit and write this we are but one week into lockdown and I am aware of the different ways in which people are managing this very unusual situation. Some people want to know the very latest COVID-19 statistics, perhaps feeling that knowledge is power and if they are well informed then they can use this to protect themselves. Others just check in once a day and do not want anything more than a summary. In my opinion BOTH ways are correct, we need to ensure that whichever way we choose helps minimise our anxiety and keeps us safe; this will not be the same for everyone. The fact that this situation is unprecedented and we all have to exist with the unknown brings about its own anxiety. Under these difficult circumstances here are some of my strategies for coping. •
•
Try and keep in touch with others via telephone or online messaging, particularly the elderly or those living alone. Often sharing information, tips, jokes, photos, quizzes and funny stories really helps us to distract from feeling isolated. Put on your favourite music and tackle those jobs that you never have time for like sorting cupboards, filing paperwork, going through old photos, scrubbing the grout in the bathroom or researching the cheapest energy supplier.

Perhaps pick up a favourite old hobby or craft that you haven’t been able to spend time on and enjoy the pleasure of doing something creative.
•
Make a list of all the things you would like to do once this is all over; the places you would like to go and the people you want to see. Having something to look forward enables us to feel positive and again is a good distraction.

Make the very most of being allowed out to exercise once a day, enjoy the many footpaths our village has to offer!
I imagine for those of you with young children things are a lot more challenging. Endless days and not being allowed to go anywhere could be a nightmare but it could also be a time to make happy memories. Ask any of my offspring about cheesy chips, the humming game or dough dollies and you will be rewarded with a smile! The Henfield Helpline
T
he Covid-19 pandemic has turned our world upside down in just a couple of short weeks. Yet just as quickly the Henfield community has risen to the challenge of keeping a keeping a vulnerable community functioning at home. The Henfield Helpline was launched on Monday 23 March as a partnership between local community groups and volunteers (see flyer opposite). By the end of its first week they already had over 200 volunteers and they had printed and distributed nearly 3,000 flyers around the village. At the time of going to print the Henfield Helpline has in excess of 250 volunteers willing to do essential grocery shopping, pick-up prescriptions, walk dogs or chat to lonely people on the telephone. They have helped a similar number of people, many on multiple occasions, from their phone lines based at the Henfield Haven. Anyone who has been advised to self-isolate or is shielding because they are in the vulnerable category can call the Henfield Helpline for assistance with immediate requirements such as essential grocery shopping or picking up medications. The Helpline will then match them
with one of the volunteer helpers in their area. The Helpline has set up a system of prescription and essential grocery deliveries in conjunction with Lloyds Pharmacy and Budgens for those who are unable to leave their homes. About 60% of the requests received so far have been for collecting and delivering prescriptions and 30% have been requests to buy food. Helpline volunteers are careful to comply with social distancing rules and deliveries are made to doorsteps or through letterboxes. If you are able to volunteer some time, however small, please email your contact details and what services you are able to offer to helpline@ henfieldhub.com. The Helpline represents the tip of the iceburg of our kind and caring community; our collective thanks go to the many individuals who are already looking after friends, neighbours and family in the village, as well as the Helpline volunteers, key workers and local shops who are working so hard to keep our village functioning through this crisis.

Outside these hours, calls are diverted to a mobile number where you can leave a message if your need is urgent. Henfield Medical Centre’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic

s I write this on Easter Sunday, there is a serene calm about the village. I feel privileged to have had a lovely family day, but I really miss my Mother who is self-isolating on her own in Surrey. There are hardly any cars on the road, the air is cleaner, there is more birdsong and the wild flowers are stunning. The community has pulled together to help the “shielding” and sick in the village. It is heart-warming to see, and will help with the inevitable financial hardship that is to come. However, in GP surgeries there has been a hive of activity! Across the country, GP practices are frantically changing the way they work to allow us to continue to care for our patients in a safe way in this Covid-19 pandemic. In Henfield Medical Centre, we now have a “hot” or infectious zone that is completely separated from the “cold” or non-infectious zone. Unfortunately the nature of this virus means that pretty much anyone could be infectious even without the usual symptoms of temperature, cough, lethargy, loss of smell and taste, and breathlessness (to name just the most common). For this reason, we are trying to avoid face-toface appointments as much as possible. It is amazing how much we have been able to achieve this with telephone consultations, or video consultations, or emailing photos of rashes or spots. The IT has had to catch up and I can see us using this in the post-Covid era, too; in many ways a telephone or video consultation can be more convenient for the patient. The newest innovation that has been fast-tracked through is the use of “on line triage”. This is a system where you can contact the Medical Centre anytime day or night by clicking on a link on our website. A series of questions then allows you to leave a request for an administrative task, find out information about minor symptoms, or give information about your symptoms and request a response from your GP within 48 hours. We particularly want to make sure that we can continue to care for our patients at highest risk. Sometimes we might suggest buying blood

pressure monitors to keep in the home. We have been arranging for vital blood tests to be done in the patient’s car in the car park, or we are doing home visits to those who are ‘shielding’. We want everyone to know that we are still here for all the other medical conditions that can affect people. We do not want to miss cancers or other serious conditions because people are too scared to seek medical advice. We will always weigh up the risk of going to hospital in the current crisis against the risk of staying at home and not getting the condition dealt with. We are expecting the peak of the pandemic in this area in the beginning of May, just when this magazine is published. We have been working hard to prepare ourselves for this. Most patients with Covid-19 will have a mild disease, can get advice from 111 online, and can just stay at home. A few will deteriorate quickly and will need urgent admission to hospital, or urgent care in their own home if they have made a decision not to go to hospital on account of severe frailty. We are expecting that there will be a significant number of infected patients who will need to be assessed to decide whether they need hospital admission or not. These highly infectious patients are going to be seen in one place, called a “Hot Hub”, that we have been setting up in the brand new Medical Centre in Storrington. If they do not have private transport, a mobile visiting car will visit them at home. The practices in our area have pulled together to organise this – Henfield, Steyning, Storrington, Billingshurst and Pulborough. It has been quite a feat, but the plan is to go live on Wednesday 15th April. Thank you to those of you who have made us face masks and surgical caps, the schools that have lent us their science goggles, and the generosity of all the volunteers. Above all, thank you for continuing the social distancing, which protects us from being over-whelmed.

Henfield Theatre Company – The Interval
Like many organisations the Henfield Theatre Company has had to curtail its activities for the time being. On Sunday 15 March the set for the play The Stepmother was almost complete, and the cast was ready for the first dress rehearsal the next day. But it was becoming increasingly clear that it would not be possible and we made the sad decision to postpone the production. But the show must go on so it’s now intended that it will run in mid-October in place of the play that was previously planned for that slot. Tickets bought on-line should have been automatically refunded. Any tickets bought in Stevens will be honoured when the production is run or a refund can be obtained when the current restrictions are lifted. We’re intending to postpone rather than cancel all planned productions. The June production - The Mysteries, a play with music to be performed in St Peter’s Church - will now be moved back to May 2021. The production for the beginning of January 2021 will remain as planned, Hans Christian Andersen, a show bringing together the fascinating story of the famous Danish author and incorporating some of his stories, all set to lovely music. But first, let’s get through this difficult time and we can all look forward to the drama being confined to the stage! Until then, everyone at the Henfield Theatre Company wishes you well.

We have been assessing the Covid-19 situation daily and are constantly reviewing all of our planned events, taking sensible steps to protect the health and safety of staff, volunteers and members of the public. In light of the updated Government advice regarding Covid-19, all Sussex Wildlife Trust events until June are cancelled until further notice. This includes public and members events as well as volunteer work parties and school visits. We will be reviewing this regularly as the situation develops. The Woods Mill nature reserve car park, public toilets, Popup Cafe and the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve Information Cabin are closed. Sussex Wildlife Trust supports current Government guidance to the public with regards to access to green space, exercise and social distancing, including not driving in order to undertake exercise. We are thinking of all our wonderful members and supporters at this time, and hope you all stay safe. We recognise how important nature is for our wellbeing, and plan to send out regular updates for things you can do from home, or in your garden. Rockinghorse is the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton and raises funds for vital equipment for the hospital as well as funding projects to support sick and disadvantages babies, children and young people throughout Sussex. In the October edition of BN5 Magazine I gave you an in-depth summary of the Regulation 14 Consultation and published the reports of that consultation on the websites so that residents had the opportunity to see the responses themselves. Our task following the consultation was to amend our Pre- Submission Plan and produce a Submission Plan for the Regulation 16 consultation across the whole of the Horsham District. We also had to complete our Basic Condition Statement and Consultation Statement. Following comments from the consultation we prepared an Addendum to the Sustainability Appraisal and on completion of this work submitted 23 documents for consultation (which included sixteen documents that comprised our evidence base), for consultation from 8 November to 20 December. There were 46 responses of which 15 were about employment land, 13 from local residents regarding housing, seven from Statutory consultees and 11 from landowners/developers. All responses are available on the Horsham District Council (HDC) website. Since the completion of the Regulation 16 Consultation, HDC have contracted out some of their Neighbourhood Plan work to the South Downs National Park Authority which has inevitably led to some slight delays. However, an examiner has now been appointed to carry out the examination of the plan and has made an independent visit to the Parish. He has received all of the responses. His initial comments were that the plan provides a clear vision for the neighbourhood area. It is thorough and comprehensive and is underpinned by an extensive evidence base with the difference between the policies and the supporting text very clear. He also commended the Sustainability Appraisal so they are encouraging comments following a great deal of work over what has become a long period of time. Thank you for continuing to support the plan which hopefully can soon be brought to a successful conclusion.

Henfield Club’s 100th Anniversary
The Henfield Club (formerly The Comrades of the Great War Club) was formed by soldiers returning from the 1st World War. When these young men returned they had learned the value of comradeship, so discussions were had to find a way of banding together. Membership of the ‘Comrades of the Great War’ grew nationally and, within it, the Henfield Comrades Concert Party was formed as a local entity and gradually became the Comrades of the Great War Club. Meetings were held in the George Hotel but it rapidly became clear the Comrades needed premises of their own. The Garden Marathon that ended up being 31 miles!
Local runner Guy Hudson ran an ultra-marathon (that’s 50km or 31 miles - yes, you read that correctly!) in his back-garden last month raising over £1,200 for Horsham Matters who provide all the essential food packages for Henfield Food Bank. Guy said: “The idea started off as a personal challenge but it seemed a tad selfish doing this just for my own amusement so I decided to raise funds for the hugely important Horsham Community Food Bank. My personal challenge also became a family affair as my wife Jo and son Sonny decided to join in with their own challenge of 200 laps (10 kilometres) each, and my daughter Kitty was to keep our food and drink aid station topped up with treats. “Initially we felt a little cheeky asking people for donations when most people’s pockets were being squeezed but we soon realised that in times like these, people are quite keen to help others who really need it. Our initial fundraising target was £500 for me running 844 laps around my garden (the equivalent of a marathon), but then I added that if donations reached my target I would carry on running until 1,000 laps were done – the equivalent of a 50 kilometres!
So at 8.30am on Saturday 4 April I set off. At first it took a while to get into the rhythm of just plodding round and round, but as time went on so did the headphones and sun cream and I just switched off. I hit the halfway mark in 2hrs38, the marathon in 4hrs42 and finished the whole big fun fundraiser in 5hrs31. It was amazing how many messages of support and kindness I received during the event.” Paula Daly of Horsham Matters said: “The money that Guy has raised will directly support the Horsham District Foodbank during this crisis, for which we now provide a doorstep, contact-free delivery of 3 days’ emergency food for those experiencing financial poverty. The Foodbank would generally provide food for around 250 residents a month and we have surpassed that in a 2 week period and fully expect it to continue to increase. App to help combat Covid-19
There is a new App which may provide some useful assistance to help slow and combat Covid-19 by producing increased data on it’s UK spread, launched by Guys, St Thomas’s and Kings College hospital researchers. The aim is to identify the risk cases sooner by self-reporting your symptoms, or lack of them, every day. It is easy to do – go to www.covid. joinzoe.com where you can learn more about it. It’s easy to do and takes about 1 minute to register and then 1 minute daily to complete. At the moment researchers are just capturing data on what is happening in hospitals, but this App will help them to know what is happening in the wider community.

Help document these times
West Sussex Record Office has closed its doors for the first time in over 70 years because of coronavirus but their great work continues and they need residents’ help. The team are inviting residents across the county to record a diary that will be kept alongside other pandemic related records. These will then be catalogued, stored, and ultimately available to the public for research. All residents need to do is document their experiences during the coronavirus pandemic, including how it is affecting them, their family and friends and the local community. It can also include new experiences, thoughts and feelings. The diary can be recorded on paper or on a phone and be done as an individual, part of a family project within the same household, a creative outlet or simply as a daily record. Screen Archive South East, who are already partnered with the Record Office and look after all the moving image archives for the region, will be supporting to archive the video diary footage. If people don’t want to participate in a diary, the Record Office would also like help in collecting other material that residents might come across such as: Leaflets/flyers/posters from councils and other organisations about the pandemic; Material from local business relating to closures or changes to how they operate; Advice from local organisations about hygiene, social distancing

Don’t fall victim to a Covid-19 scam
West Sussex Trading Standards is warning residents to watch out for coronavirus related scams. Fake emails claiming to be from the government, shops selling false protective masks, and rogue traders offering coronavirus testing are some of the scams people need to be wary of. Here are some of the most common scams to look out for at the moment: Be aware of people offering cures or vaccines for coronavirus – there is no specific treatment for coronavirus; home cleaning services - be aware of false claims; people impersonating healthcare workers, claiming to be offering ‘home-testing’ for coronavirus – this is a scam and these kits are not currently available to buy; emails saying that you can get a refund on taxes, utilities, or similar are usually bogus and they are just after your personal and bank details. Richard Sargeant, West Sussex Trading Standards Team Manager, said: “As a result of social distancing, some people are more isolated and are particularly vulnerable to scams. I urge residents to be wary. Urgent carer recruitment appeal
Local people who have lost their jobs due to the impact of coronavirus are being urged to come forward and apply for jobs in the care industry to support elderly and vulnerable residents. Care homes and home care providers in West Sussex are anticipating a huge demand for their services as the outbreak continues. A West Sussex County Council initiative called Proud to Care is targeting people from the travel, leisure, retail and hospitality industries as they have the ideal skills and experience to succeed in care work. Founder of Chichester based Guardian Angel Carers, Christina Handasyde Dick said: “As a home care provider we are on a major recruitment drive at the moment, as we are providing essential services to vulnerable adults in their own home at this challenging time. “We desperately want to support our local hospitals to discharge patients as efficiently as possible, and to be able to continue to support them in the comfort of their own home. I thought I would share the content of an email which I have received from a local resident who does not wish to be named. “The reason for my email is to draw to your attention, as a gentleman of authority in Henfield, how proud we all must be to live in such a wonderful village. The response to helping out self-isolated people like myself is quite, quite incredible. I have daily phone calls, even managed to set up Facetime, offers to do shopping for me to name but a few. For once I have to admit to being utterly speechless. People I hardly know are offering their help, little children come to the window and talk to me to make sure I am alright and not lonely etc. I am honoured and proud as always to be living here where I do and to have such a wonderful group of people who are around in times of need. I am lucky, we are all lucky. It has united Henfield. If there is some way the powers that be can hear of this that would be great.” I would add my thanks to all those in Henfield who are doing their bit for others in these difficult times.

Staying safe - from a local resident
It wasn’t until the April issue of BN5 arrived in my post box that I realised just how much goes on in our little village. – and, very sadly, how much we are all missing right now. My April calendar was bursting with daily activities and one by one they were crossed out. Blank! But I did have the time to sit and read through the pages of our monthly village magazine and discovered that not only do we have bell ringers, knitters and art club – we also have films, health checks and snooker. How did I not know? Of course much of the social services are carried out at Henfield Haven with its chatty and repair cafés and loads of support and advice is on offer in Henfield Hall. Most especially evident in the April issue of BN5 was the hive of activities planned for the Easter holiday. So as I write this on Good Friday – in a blaze on sunshine with no family around to paint or hunt Easter eggs, - I am making plans for post Covid-19. We have all made new friends and got to know our neighbours. The Sports Hall is full to capacity with people trying to get fit! The new look Library finally opens its doors. The school playground and tennis courts are noisy and the garden centres are blooming. Joggers run in groups and the pubs are pulling pints. Church doors are unlocked and The High Street takes back its rightful place. There is a whiff of fresh coffee in the air. Furloughing has worked for the fortunate. The only place that remains quiet is our Medical Centre. Our doctors and nurses need a rest. And every Thursday night at 8pm I suspect we will reflect on those ‘unprecedented’ times when we stayed at home and stayed safe.

Who would be a bird this time of year? What with singing non-stop to make themselves attractive (some after flying up from Africa), flirting and courting (not to mention mating), building nests, finding food, being good mums and dads and keeping an eye out for all those nasty beasties trying to eat their young they must be totally stressed out and exhausted! But they do it all so beautifully and give such pleasure to lots of us strange folk who are a bit nutty about them. We at Henfield Birdwatch would love to know what’s going on in your garden so we have set up a Henfield Big Garden Bird Bash for the weekend of 16-17 May and would love you to join in. You can watch your garden for as long or short as you like over the weekend and record the highest number of each species you see at any one time. ONE STEP AT A TIME… HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR FEET WHILST IN SELF ISOLATION! by PAT TURNBULL, PODIATRIST Caring for your feet in self-isolation is very important as you may not be able to visit your surgery. Feet are often the most neglected part of the body and foot problems can give you unnecessary pain, keeping you off your feet with wear and tear or even immobility. The following self-help advice may help to keep your feet comfortable. First, make sure your shoes and slippers are the right size and shape for your foot and that your socks are not too tight. A long handle scissor can make it easier to cut your toenails if you can’t reach them and if not then you can use a long emery board to file them. If this is not possible apply Vaseline which can soften the sides until help is available. If they are very thick, again try to file them down. If you have problems with corns, a file is also useful for filing down the hard skin that develops over a corn. A word of warning: never use corn plasters as they are filled with acid that can burn further areas causing pain and even ulcers. Just file and apply foot cream to soften the skin which will reduce the build-up of hard skin which can be painful. Verrucae also make hard skin to protect themselves so gently file every day if possible as this reduces the pain. If you have arthritic pain and have had Western Acupuncture sessions, gently massage the area where the needles would go and gently stretch the area on ankle or foot with the back of your other heel. For painful knees gently massage the area with your knuckles. A Foot soak in a relaxing
bowl of water with Epsom Salts also helps. Epsom was the first ever Spa Town and the salts are used in anti-inflammatory medicines. (Soak your feet for 15-20 mins, do not drink it!) Try to get some exercise if you can, even if it’s just around the house or garden. Get up every 30 mins and walk - just the motion of getting up will help. If you can’t exercise and are sitting for most of the day, a circulation booster will improve your circulation, help swollen legs and feet, improve the healing of ulcers, reduce aching legs and help overall comfort and mobility (they are not suitable for people who use a pacemaker or are pregnant). It is good to generally care for your feet with daily washing and using a hair dryer to dry if you can’t reach them. Moisturise them regularly - if you can’t reach down, put some cream in a plastic bag as the heat of your feet will help the cream to get absorbed. If you have cold feet in bed, a covered hot water bottle between your knees will warm blood going down to your feet. If you suffer from hot feet in bed, then use a cold hot water bottle instead. For cramp in your feet and legs in bed, an alcoholic nightcap (but not brandy), will allow the blood to circulate easier if you are allowed. I offer free telepodiatry sessions over video calls if you have access to a Smartphone. I can give advice and deliver dressings, insoles, other foot care products such as circulation boosters and slippers to your door to make life that little bit more comfortable in these unprecedented times.
ALLEVIATING FOOD POVERTY IN HENFIELD
W
e would like to say a huge thank you to David, Lynette and staff at Knight’s Budgens and to Pankaj at One Stop Convenience Stores for allowing us to put Henfield Food Bank collection baskets in their stores on Henfield High Street back in March. Stokes Newsagents are also collecting and have been doing so for some months, thank you to everyone who has kindly donated already. Any donated items will go to the main food bank at Horsham Matters, which for the last six months has been providing emergency food parcels to people in Henfield and will continue to do so throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. In the first few days of collecting Henfield donated over 40 bags of food – an incredibly generous response! People can fall into food poverty through no fault of their own. It can be triggered by a change in either personal or financial circumstances and the Covid-19 pandemic is likely to cause many problems over the next few months, so your donations are incredibly important. Whatever the causes of food poverty, the impact is enormous,
and it affects all ages: Children may go hungry in the school holidays because they have no access to free school meals; working parents on low incomes may go without food in order to feed their children; and the elderly may have to choose between eating or paying their heating bill. Horsham Matters works with local referral agencies (such as Citizens Advice, housing associations, local schools or support workers) to provide individuals and families with at least three days’ worth of healthy, balanced food, as well as long-term support where possible. Typical food parcels include items such as: breakfast cereals; long-life milk; fruit juice; soup; pasta; rice; pasta sauce; tinned beans; tinned meat; tinned vegetables; tinned fruit; tea or coffee; biscuits; and snacks. Food parcels can be adapted to meet dietary needs, for example, gluten free or vegetarian and they also usually contain toiletries, toilet roll and non-standard items such as tomato ketchup, marmite and stock cubes as well as some sweet treats. veryone has been affected one way or another by the Coronavirus but what has been so heartening is how the Henfield community has pulled together to make life better for people in different ways. We were really delighted when Paul and Pauline McBride of Sussex Prairie Gardens approached us last month with their idea to ‘grow’ a bit of positivity in the local community through the power of gardening; “Paul and I have lots of flower and vegetable seeds, kindly given to us by the local Sussex Plant Heritage Group, which we would like to distribute to BN5 Magazine readers for free!” As Britain’s largest ‘prairie’ or ‘naturalistic’ garden with eight acres of stunning garden to roam around, Paul and Pauline know a little bit about growing things! “The seeds are a mix of really unusual flowers and heritage vegetables and we thought that whilst confined to the home on lockdown, perhaps people would like to have a go at growing something for the first time, or maybe even as an activity with their children whilst home schooling. “Growing things from scratch is easy to do and really rewarding, especially when you can eat the results! It’s a small thing but we all need some
small things to encourage and inspire us in these difficult times...” If you’ve never grown flowers or vegetables from seed before, then all you need are the seeds, a patch of soil or a container filled with compost in a sunny position (a grow bag or a large plastic pot will do), access to water and patience! You may want to start off growing your seedlings indoors on window sills in recycled containers such as yoghurt pots or egg boxes and then transfer them outside once the threat of frost has passed. You can obtain compost or grow bags from local suppliers Rushfields, Swains or Olus (Sussex Prairies use their organic soil improver, produced in Henfield from the brown-lidded bin waste). Video killed the Radio Star... I am writing this article on the 2nd April, however, by the time you read this, it will be May. If the last two weeks are anything to go by, who knows what could have changed in that time! It has been difficult to catch one’s breath with the speed at which things have developed both at a global / national level so it’s hard to know if what I am writing now will even be relevant in May! Like everyone, we have had to adapt to the new rules and regulations and do all we can to help reduce contact between people. Under guidelines from our professional body, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, we have stopped seeing routine appointments and have focused on urgent and emergency cases only. We are still open as normal, but the result is that we have had to dramatically change the way we staff the practice and how we offer our services. We have also had to change how we interact with each other and our clients. Many of these changes are things that I am looking forward to being able to stop when we can – I don’t particularly enjoy doing consultations through a car window and I miss the friendly banter that happens in our reception area! However, necessity is the mother of invention as they say, and there are some things which we may end up doing differently and dare I say better as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. The first is the use of the video call. In an effort to reduce face to face contact time with clients we have been conducting video consultations. If we are not sure if you need to bring your pet to the practice, then this is a great way to discuss a pet’s problem remotely and in some cases we can glean enough information to prescribe some medication. If we need to see the pet, then we have already done most of the discussion via video link and can then get on with an examination and treatment. As with all new initiatives, the first few times are a bit of a learning curve, so I decided to use

my good mother (Thanks Mum!) as a guinea pig to test how user friendly our video consultation process was. Things went fairly smoothly, although we did end up having to talk on the old fashioned telephone during the set up phase which did defeat the purpose somewhat! However, we have since fine-tuned things and once most people have turned their web cam on (I’d never used mine before this!), things run pretty smoothly. Will we use video consulting in the future? Don’t worry, the traditional consult at the practice is not going anywhere, but video consults will certainly have a part to play. They have their limitations as obviously you cannot physically examine a pet, but they are a great way to discuss conditions, undertake reviews and follow ups and are useful for visual problems such as skin conditions and lumps. It means you can access advice from your vet without having to worry about getting the dog in for an appointment while factoring school runs or access to a car! From our point of view, there is the advantage of being able to conduct a video consultation from the home and only having to worry about the top half of your attire, although I can assure you that I have never conducted a video consult in my pyjama bottoms! The second is delivery of medication to your door. More and more we are choosing home delivery over collection in person and no more so than now. We’ve been delivering food and medications to anyone in the area who cannot get to the practice. Additionally, we have been posting many medications, flea and worm treatments direct to our clients to avoid unnecessary travel. I am sure this service is popular and a system in the future where flea and wormers are delivered to your door as you require them will be one less thing to put on the “to-do” list! Watch this space! I don’t want to get too profound, but these are just two examples of how our practice can improve things as a result of the current situation and there will be countless other examples in all walks of life. For now, we must get through these tough times, but it is nice to know that there is genuine hope for positive change in the future. In the meantime, I hope you and your pets stay. New ‘Helping Hands’ service supports most isolated hospice patients
S
t Barnabas House is piloting a new service, ‘Helping Hands’, which aims to provide social and practical support to hospice patients who don’t have a network of friends and family to help them during this unsettling and challenging time. In addition to doing everything they can to ensure hospice services at St Barnabas House continue to run as smoothly as possible, staff have rallied together to volunteer their time to support the new ‘Helping Hands’ initiative. From fundraising to finance, team members from across the organisation are helping deliver essential shopping, collecting prescriptions and delivering medication, as well as making friendly phone calls to keep in touch with patients and help tackle loneliness. St Barnabas House employee, Claudia Pearce, works in the fundraising team but is now also helping deliver food shopping to patients. Claudia says, “It’s really nice to do something positive and help vulnerable patients in this uncertain time. In my last shop, I couldn’t get loo roll, so I popped some in the bag from home as I didn’t want anyone to be without!” In just one week, over 77 referrals have been made to support the hospice’s most isolated patients, with the service initially piloting with men and women who usually attend the Day Hospice once a week for social activities, respite care and emotional support. Day Hospice patient, Don Pearman, aged 88, lives alone in Worthing and is benefitting from weekly welfare chats. Don says, “Thank you for all that you are doing for me. I do miss my visits to Day Hospice, but roll on the day when I can return to St Barnabas, my second home.” Whilst the St Barnabas Day Hospice, hospice café and retail outlets have closed following government advice, other front line hospice services continue to run as usual, with some added measures in place. Rosemarie Finley, CEO at St Barnabas House, says, “Our priority remains with our patients and their families and we are doing everything within our power to ensure as many hospice services continue as possible. “As well as the new 40 | BN5 Magazine
Helping Hands service, outpatient appointments, therapy services, community palliative care team and Hospice at Home visits are currently still continuing, but with pre-visit calls to ensure patients aren’t experiencing any coronavirus symptoms and still wish to have a visit. “At the hospice itself, we have opened five new beds, bringing the total number to 25. People are still able to visit their loved ones (assuming they are not experiencing any coronavirus symptoms), but we have moved to essential visiting only and ask that only two visitors come at a time. Thank you to everyone in the local community for your continued support. We have been extremely moved by your kind messages and offers of support during this difficult time.” The situation is changing all the time.
