Editor’s Letter
The Horsham District Showcase Tour in Henfield was a sunny, fun filled afternoon, we had an incredible 2,500 visitors to our high street that afternoon! A big thank you to all the shops who opened, the stallholders who came along and the organisers and volunteers who made it happen. We loved Amanda’s photos of the event and chose one for our cover this month. This month we’ve got a preview of all that Sussex Prairies has in store for the season; take a look at page 36 for details of all the events, courses, theatre and music they are bringing to Henfield this year. A place close to our hearts, The Henfield Haven, enjoyed hosting a special guest last month, Jack the Lad from Heart FM’s breakfast show came along to open the new Garden Room. He wasn’t allowed to relax either, but was swiftly invited to help interview some of the Haven’s volunteers, customers and supporters before his official ribbon-cutting duties. Many thanks to Jack for coming and supporting The Haven. With the lighter evenings, thoughts turn to getting outside a little more. Do take advantage of an amazing membership offer from Henfield Tennis Club as part of their Davis Cup open day in June, see page 63 for details.

St Barnabas House invites you to participate in its Sunflower Memories Appeal. The appeal enables supporters and friends of St Barnabas House to make a donation in memory of a loved one. In return for a donation, we have a lovely sunflower marker onto which the name of your loved one can be written. Each sunflower will be planted in the hospice grounds for the month of June 2019. On Friday 14 June at 6pm and Saturday 15 June at 10.30am, our Lead Chaplain, Stephen Gurr, will conduct a blessing in memory of all those for whom a sunflower has been dedicated.
History of the Sussex Argus newspaper

Henfield Football Club tournament
We are currently in the process of putting together our annual football tournament which will be held on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 May, at the Kingsfield football pitches in Henfield. Over the 2 days we will have in excess of 140 teams playing, ranging from ages 7 to 16. This year we also have an all-girls tournament which we are really excited about as our very own girls’ teams are getting bigger and stronger in squad numbers and look extremely promising for the future. As you can imagine running a tournament comes at a great cost and we are currently looking for companies who would be willing to sponsor an age group winning trophy. Each age group would have your companies name attached to it so for example the U13’s ...Your Company Name...Cup in the tournament program and also on the trophies, we would also put your company advert in our tournament programme. We are looking for trophies for each winning team in the under 9’s, 10’s, 11’s, 13’s, 14’s, girls u10’s and u11’s. And also medals for every u7’s and u8’s player. There are also runners up in each category, so as you can see it’s a lot of trophies to purchase and any assistance is gratefully received. All we ask for is a contribution of £150 to purchase the trophies for winners and runners up in one age category and also for the engraving. This year’s Christian Aid Week runs from Sunday 12 to Saturday 18 May, and as last year there will be a limited house-to-house collection in Henfield, Shermanbury and Woodmancote. In Savula district, the community struggle with a clinic which has no electricity and only two delivery beds. Christian Aid has been working with local partner RADA (Rehabilitation and Development Agency) to help vulnerable women access healthcare, improve hygiene with simple interventions like hand washing and to build a better healthcare centre in Savula. This Christian Aid Week, together we can help make childbirth safe. Through our gifts and prayers, we can give the world’s poorest mums and babies a chance to live. Just £300 provides a new delivery bed. Last year we collected £2,000 locally - please help us to meet or beat that figure this year.

Henfield’s Gardens and Arts weekend at The Henfield Hall
Come to The Henfield Hall during the Gardens and Arts weekend (8-9 June) for marvellous music and fabulous food, with Craft stalls in the Main Hall and Henfield’s Art Club Exhibition in the Garden Room. Henfield’s Garden Club will be holding their popular plant swap and sale in the Hall garden (Saturday only). There will be a variety of music in the garden both days. On Saturday afternoon we will feature the Senior Patcham Silver Band. The Henfield Hall will be hosting the Finale event in the garden on the Sunday evening from 5.30pm, featuring the popular hot jazz ensemble, The Jonny Hepbir Quintet. The Finale will be in the hall if it is wet! On both days you will be able to enjoy bacon butties, light lunches and cream teas. During the Finale we will be serving ‘Pot Pies’ to eat while enjoying the music. There will also be hot dogs, ice creams and cocktails available. The bar will be open! Please come and support your local hall run as a charity by the villagers for the village. Profits from the weekend will go towards the hall’s refurbishment project. (Charity no. 305377). The Club continued its enjoyable winter season with our one-day competitions. We booked Henfield Hall one Sunday in March and played until we were exhausted. Once again, the order of play, both in singles and pairs, was well organised by Mike Johnson, who this year went on to win both events! The morning was all short singles games whereby four sets of ‘round robins’ had some surprising results, with one of our most consistent players, John Williams, losing out at this stage. After lunch we played off semis and the finals of singles with the champion being, as I mentioned, Mike Johnson, closely ‘run-up’ by Maureen Watling, in the same position as last year. Basketball success
St. Paul’s Catholic College is celebrating sporting success after winning the Basketball England Under 14 Premier National schools final. After competing against the best schools in London and Southern England they travelled to the National Performance Centre in Manchester to play Northampton School for Boys in the final. The atmosphere was charged with the travelling supporters from Years 7-9, staff and parents to cheer on the team. St. Paul’s, coached by Charlotte Curran, got off to a good start with a 6-0 run, but Northampton have been at the finals many times before, and kept the game tight until the end of the third quarter when St. Paul’s, led by Henfield Heat players, pulled away in the fourth quarter. Ben Carter was able to thread some sublime passing and pick up valuable points, and Oscar Curran lead the team to victory. The final score was 88-69 and St. Paul’s Catholic College became National Champions! The ‘Most Valuable Player’ was awarded to Oscar Curran, who scored 43 points. Other top scorers were Adam Kadan - 19 points and Alexander Price - 11 points. Rob Carter, Headteacher said, “It’s a huge achievement for the college to win a National Premier Championship with the best Year 9 school basketball team in the country. We are so proud that the boys performed in a big game, at the National Arena at such a high standard.”

Part of the fun of the Horsham District Year of Culture is discovering culture in unexpected places. Did you know, for example, that the RSPB Pulborough Brooks is hosting creative writing events in May? Not something you’d usually experience at a wildlife retreat. As part of the Nightingale Festival taking place from Friday 3 May until Monday 6 May, for the first time the brooks will play host to creative writing workshops and talks on writing, due in part to a grant from the Year of Culture. All events will need booking but be quick as places are limited!
On Saturday 4 May between 10.30-11.30am there will be a talk by Tessa Boase, ‘The Women who Saved the Birds’. Twelve years before the suffragette movement a very different women’s campaign caught the public imagination. Its aim was simple, to stamp out the cruel fashion for feathered hats. LEAP Funding – Helping Businesses take the next step
For the last 2 years the Economic Development Team at Horsham District Council has successfully secured around £200,000 of external funding to directly support local businesses. Most of this funding has gone into the very successful LEAP programme which has supported over 50 local businesses, across Horsham District, with small grants to enable them to move their business into the next stage of development – i.e. to take that big LEAP forward. In 2017 the grants were for up to £2,000 per individual business, matched £ for £ by other funds raised by the business owner. In 2018 the grants were up to £4,000, again matched £ for £ and were aimed specifically at businesses in the tourism sector. The Council is very optimistic about securing another 2 years’ funding for LEAP and will open for applications as soon as funding is confirmed. Watch this space for an announcement.

Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens is now open
Described as ‘the finest woodland gardens in England’, Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens has now opened to the public. This follows two years’ extensive work on the Grade 1 Listed gardens and on-site facilities. It is one of the largest UK garden restoration projects for nearly 30 years. General Manager Adam Streeter says that work by Head Gardener Ray Abraham has included inspection and extensive rebuilding of some 10 miles of pathways that had collapsed down into the valley in which the gardens are set; also cataloguing some 10,000 trees and carrying out tree surgery where necessary. Closed to the public since 2010, the 240 acre estate has attracted major public interest to see once again the outstanding displays of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, magnolias and bluebells, collected from all over the world from the early 1800s. The Grade II listed 19th-century Italianate style mansion is restored and updated and open for classic afternoon tea. There is also a multi-course tasting menu at Restaurant Interlude, with produce that is foraged, raised and produced on the estate and selected local farms. Horsham District Showcase Tour saves the best for last with final Henfield pit-stop

rowds descended on the High Street on Sunday 24 March to greet the Horsham District Showcase Tour as it roared into Henfield with a flurry of colour, flags, noise and drama. Over 40 cars representing the four Horsham weekends; Italian supercars from Piazza Italia, classic French cars from FrenchFest, vintage VWs from Plum Jam, muscle cars from AmeriCARna and classic British cars from The Great British Weekend combined to make up an eclectic mix of all things automotive to thrill and delight the vast crowds. Henfield was the final pit stop on the tour and greeted drivers and the team of Showcase Tour volunteers with an enthusiastic welcome in the beautiful spring sunshine. Crowds had already enjoyed the freedom of a traffic-free High Street to mix amongst the music and entertainment, street food stalls, and vintage cars displayed by local collectors. The three High Street pubs hosted crowds of people enjoying a cold beer with friends as they spilled out onto the streets, giving the village a real carnival atmosphere. The whole event was declared an unmitigated success – with the biggest crowds seen in Henfield High Street for many years and a real sense of village pride, community and enjoyment. Most of all congratulations go to the team from Horsham District Council Year of Culture who managed to organise a magnificent Showcase Tour which, after leaving Christ’s Hospital School in Horsham at breakfast time, had visited the five market towns of Billingshurst, Pullborough, Storrington, Steyning and Henfield with minuteprecision timing. They were safely accompanied by the incredible biking volunteers from SERV Sussex, who during their ‘day jobs’ transport emergency blood and transplant organs for hospitals across the country, more on the charity in a future issue of BN5. New Prairie, new plantings - As we hurtle towards another summer season at Sussex Prairies we are pleased to say that the Prairies have spread their wings this winter. Turning up the heat - This side of the channel, Paul and Pauline have their hands full at home with an exciting new season ahead of us. Last year’s summer heat wave tested our garden plants sorely but as a result of that challenge we have discovered a range of plants that bear up surprisingly well under stressful drought situations. We will be looking at how these plants continue to perform this year and can tell you all about them in our plant nursery. Delightful dahlias - We have always loved dahlias and this year will be no exception as we pack many different new varieties into our cutting garden for your delectation. We hope that the slugs will be merciful! Top of the Tropics - This will be our second season for the newly designed Tropical Entrance garden at Sussex Prairies. Overwintered tropical specimen plants are waiting their chance to shine as we wait for the threat of frosts to diminish. Watch out for the new, tropically-inspired homemade cakes which will be joining us this year. We are delighted that this winter’s cake trials (well someone has to do it!) have found some real cake winners such as mango and lime, banana and coconut and the queen pineapple! An elephant never forgets - This year our chosen garden charity will be Save the Elephants (STE) which was founded in 1993 by Iain Douglas-Hamilton. A research and conservation organisation, STE is a UK-registered charity headquartered in Nairobi with its principal research station in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya. STE’s mission is to secure a future for elephants; sustain the beauty and ecological integrity of the places they live; to promote man’s delight in their intelligence and the diversity of their world; and to develop a tolerant relationship between the two species. Come and find our elephant house exhibit in the garden! New artist in residence - In the light of our commitment to our natural world, we are delighted to be joined by Keith Sturgess as our artist in residence for 2019. Keith has been inspired by natural gardens over many years and we are now delighted to be joined by him and his impressive textured artworks in our exhibition space this summer. Keith will also be treating us to his series of dynamic workshops to be held in the garden during our 2019 season. Heart FM’s Jack the Lad opens The Haven’s Garden Room
A
fter months of hard work, it was finally time to open the new Henfield Haven Garden Room on 21st March. Friends, customers, staff and supporters gathered to celebrate what has been achieved in such a short time, just four years since the Haven was saved from certain closure by a team of determined Henfield volunteers. The wonderfully light and airy new extension seamlessly links the beautiful outside garden space to the Haven Café, opening up a vast array of possibilities for the centre. Guest of honour was the Heart Sussex breakfast show presenter, Jack the Lad, who calls himself a ‘proud Henfielder’. Jack and his wife Sally-Ann were struck by the sense of community when they came to the village looking for a new home eight years ago. “Henfield is a great place to live and to raise our family. The Haven is one of those great community places that sums up Henfield and I’m pleased to support it,” said Jack. ‘Greater than the sum of its parts’ is a phrase that fits The Henfield Haven perfectly, the success of 40 | BN5 Magazine
the centre is testament to the collective efforts of those who fought to save it -as well as the professionals and volunteers who keep it going every day. The project is Henfield through and through - proving what can be achieved when people work together with a commitment to make life better for others. The Henfield Social Enterprise CIC look after the Haven, while care is provided by experts from Impact Initiatives. Before his grand opening and ribbon-cutting duties, Jack spent some time interviewing various people who have been instrumental in the success of the Haven. Alex Nevatt, who runs the Connector Plus scheme from The Haven, explained how the centre runs three days a week of essential high-needs care for dementia patients, with an additional three days for social groups, activities and carer support. “The Haven is a godsend for people who are living with dementia and their families,” said Alex. “Many people just couldn’t cope without it. Visitors who comes here are struck by how warm and happy it is, the Haven is a lovely place to be.” www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

It’s not just about the building, the outside spaces are just as important. The Haven garden is a beautiful, colourful, sweet-smelling and often edible joy for visitors to behold. If the sun is shining it becomes an extra room – and now the new Haven Garden Room acts as a link, staff can throw open its glass doors and enjoy the fresh air! Liz Hodgson and her team of volunteers look after the garden with green-fingered enthusiasm. “When we started it was a bit of an un-loved and underutilised area. Now we’ve added raised beds for fruit and veg, flowers galore with colour and fragrances to stimulate the senses,” said Liz. Jack also interviewed Anne Dewdney, whose husband, Rohan, was diagnosed with Frototemporal Dementia five years ago. Anne works full time and depends on The Haven to help her to give Rohan the best time possible, and give her peace of mind. It’s hard for Anne to find places where Rohan can be safe and happy during the day, but The Haven has filled that gap. “It’s like a home from home,” said Anne. “Work is my sanity, and I couldn’t continue if it weren’t for the reassurance that Rohan is being looked after and enjoying his day. I can’t thank you all enough.” Tracey Prescott, one of the team from 777 Fundraising, explained how she and the intrepid group of cyclists had battled through rain, sleet and snow to cycle back from Paris to Henfield to raise thousands of pounds to help pay for the

new extension, which was built under budget and before deadline by local building company Downs Southern. “The Haven really does touch your heart. The team gave their all and achieved personal victories with the bike ride, at the same time fundraising for such a great cause. One of the days we cycled 165 miles, the following day we hit a blizzard,” said Tracey. “It is all worthwhile when we see how important this place is to our village.” While the 777 team were cycling, there were 60 people taking part in an all-day Spinathon, all adding to the huge sum raised for The Haven and Henfield Leisure Centre. Claire Webley, Regional Funding Officer from The Big Lottery, explained why The Haven had achieved a Big Lottery grant for £65,000 to complete the project. “The team at Henfield Social Enterprise CIC put forward a compelling case for the grant, and seeing the finished project today confirms that our decision was a good one. The Big Lottery are proud to support this project and the Henfield Haven.” Do drop into the Haven, see the new Garden Room and enjoy a coffee or lunch in the café, everyone is most welcome. any of you, especially if you’ve lived in Henfield for some time, will know Rohan Dewdney. Rohan is Henfield through and through, he grew up in the village and lives here with his wife, Anne. They have two grownup children, Matt and Kate. His mum and dad (Barbara and Ross) are well-known in the village, as is his sister, Jan Holden and her husband Andy. Rohan’s broad grin, affable approach and charming ‘can-do’ attitude has always put him in high demand in Henfield, both socially and professionally. He has always been involved with village life; from his captaincy of Henfield Football men’s team in younger years, to managing various youth teams and setting up the Girl’s Football team. He was a respected accountant with his own successful accountancy business, a keen fly fisherman and volunteered as treasurer of The Warren Playgroup and the Self Help Group. Five years ago, after a series of illnesses including minor strokes and Neurosarcoidosis, Rohan’s family and friends began to worry that his health was deteriorating further. Tale-tale signs and small periods of forgetfulness led to the life-changing diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). FTD is one of the rarer forms of dementia and, at the age of 56, Rohan faced an uncertain future. One thing that was very certain for Rohan, however, was the support and love of his family and friends. Anne will tell you that life has changed immeasurably for them all. But, after adjusting to the shock of the diagnosis and practicalities of the huge changes in their lives, they have found that living with dementia is by no means bleak. In fact, the diagnosis has given Anne, Kate and Matt new determination to enjoy what life throws at them, with laughter and love, and to create happy times and great memories. Anne does struggle sometimes with the merging of what she calls the ‘pink and blue’ jobs, of

having to make important decisions without Rohan’s advice. She struggles often with the perceptions of others and sometimes feels frustrated at having to almost fight for Rohan’s care - but the whole family has found ways of dealing with the challenges, very often with a healthy dose of black humour! The Haven in Henfield (along with Know Dementia, another wonderful support charity), has provided invaluable help that Anne knows she would be lost without. “They have been amazing, knowing Rohan is loving his time at The Haven gives me the freedom to work without worry. At The Haven they keep him engaged with lots of things to do, make him smile and give him incredibly happy times,” said Anne. Rohan, Anne, Matt and Kate have a vast social network of friends and family in the village who have been a lifeline to them. The Haven and Know Dementia are an extension of this kind, caring network who have provided love and laughter through good and challenging times. Anne’s tip for all of us who want to make Henfield ‘Dementia Friendly’, is to; “Keep talking - always chat, even if the person doesn’t recognise you, and just smile, it will always be appreciated.”

What a history!
I
t is not surprising that our local theatre company has won so many accolades given that it has a pedigree going back to Victorian times! The current society was born out of the former Henfield Players and Henfield Choral and Operatic Society when they merged in 1999 to form the Henfield Theatre Company (HTC). The Henfield Choral and Operatic Society had its origins, under different names, as far back as 1886, starting as a purely choral group performing mainly oratorio works in the newly built Assembly Rooms. They restructured in 1961 under the name Henfield Choral and Operatic Society with a production of ‘Pirates of Penzance’, again in the Assembly Rooms. The Henfield Players, meanwhile, was a flourishing amateur dramatic society founded in 1929, which produced two or three plays every year (with the exception of the war years) until the merger in 1999. The first Chairman of the Players was Eric Whittome, whose picture can still be seen on the back wall in The Henfield Hall. Various three-act plays were also entered for the Sussex Drama Festival; they were publicly adjudicated and reached the finals on two occasions, with performances at Glyndebourne. For each production, the Assembly Rooms were taken over for an entire week; the group moved in on Saturday evening with lights, stage and scenery, which had been painted in Benson Coleman’s barn (now Benson Road). There was no room to exit stage right other than by going out into the street and back into the other side. A long standing member, Malcolm Reid, fondly remembers the occasion when Angela Measor went off singing ‘I got the Sun in the Morning…’, but when she reappeared minutes later into the auditorium, back from the High Street, she was

soaking wet – it was pouring with rain outside! The two dramatic societies had a long history of collaboration; when the new hall was opened in 1974 the groups formed a joint venture, the Players and Operatic Pantomime Society (POPS) with the purpose of staging regular pantomimes, which they did until 1999 when that role was taken over by HTC. The first panto that they staged in the hall was Aladdin. Since the merger HTC has flourished, staging four or five productions each year, varying from panto to Shakespeare with most genres in between. They have won many awards including, in just the past two years, twice taking the cup for best overall production at the Brighton and Hove Arts Council awards ceremony. The next production, in mid-October 2019, will be the hilarious ‘One Man Two Guvnors’, by Richard Bean - see www.henfieldtheatrecompany.com The Henfield Assembly Rooms were built in 1886 and were used for musical and dramatic productions until 1974, then being replaced by the Henfield Village Hall (now The Henfield Hall). The original Assembly Rooms building, including its fine clock, can still be seen in the High Street as it was converted into shops and is now occupied by Stevens Estate Agents, Help the Aged and Henfield Eyecare. A naturopathic approach to allergies and intolerances It’s that time of year when hay-fever sufferers start to feel the effects of their immune systems’ overreaction to the rise in pollen. It is not only pollen which can trigger allergy or intolerance reactions. Other common triggers are dairy and wheat, also animal dander and dust mites. According to the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, allergies are rising. There are many theories as to why this may be including the ‘Hygiene Hypothesis’ which implicates our overly hygienic lifestyles and the reduced exposure to a diversity of microbes as a factor. The rise in pollen allergy cases has been linked to climate change and air pollution may also increase sensitivity to allergens. So, the big question is what do we do about such reactions? hermanbury’s biennial Beating the Bounds takes place on Rogation Sunday which this year is 26 May, starting at St Giles church at 2pm. It is a popular event made more so because of the fabulous cakes and teas prepared and served by the Friends of St Giles. Last time we also enjoyed freshly prepared vegetarian Indian Street Food, which will on offer again this year. It’ll be half term so we hope Mums and Dads will bring their children because face painting will be available for children of all ages! This year is Horsham’s Year of Culture and heritage is the theme so the ancient tradition of Beating the Bounds (which goes back to Anglo-Saxon times when it was held in honour of Terminus, the god of landmarks), is a very appropriate reminder of the heritage of the parish. It was traditionally carried out so that inhabitants knew the extent of their parish before maps were invented. The locals, led by the vicar, walked the boundary of their parish checking that boundary stones or markers were in the right place and ensuring the that knowledge of the boundary was passed on from generation to generation. During the procession the boundary markers were beaten with sticks and it’s believed the youngsters of the parish were held upside down with their heads in contact with the boundary markers to ensure they remembered where they were. It was a

way of strengthening the community and gives it a sense of place, something the people of Shermanbury said was important to them during the neighbourhood planning process a couple of years ago. The aim of the current revival, which is led by the Rector of St Giles, is to increase this sense of community cohesion between the two parts of the parish (Shermanbury and Wineham), and the wider community. In this year of culture we will be inviting our neighbours in West Grinstead, Cowfold and Henfield parishes to join us to learn a bit about the heritage of the area. Rather than walk the entire boundary (which is more than 12 miles), we will amble along the historic bridleway known as The Grove between the church at St Giles (just off the A281 where there will be car parking), and the lovely chapel and it’s garden on Frylands Lane in Wineham. It’s a family-friendly ‘there-and-back’ route of about a mile, but for those who prefer to walk one way only there will be transport available for the journey back to St Giles for refreshments. The Grade II* Saxon St Giles church will be open on the day so the delights of that can be enjoyed as well. Join us for a relaxing walk with views of the river Adur and enjoy the heritage and delights on your doorstep. Put the date in your diary, bring the family and your dog, and your own stick!

ell not quite, but some of The Davis Cup players certainly are coming to Henfield Tennis Club (HTC) Open Day on Sunday 9 June, so come and be inspired by some of Britain’s top tennis players, watch them and possibly even play against them too! Luke Milligan and James Auckland, both former British Davis Cup squad players, are providing coaching sessions on the morning of the HTC Open Day for all abilities and ages, so whether you are 6 or 60 plus, there will be a session that you can join in with. Later in the day you can watch the two players in action. Two of Henfield’s top players will take on Luke (who has coached Laura Robson) and James, in an Exhibition Match at 2pm. Maybe bring a chair (in case we haven’t enough) and enjoy a Wimbledon-style spectacle without the cost and travel! There will be a bouncy castle to keep the younger children entertained and why not enjoy our BBQ and speciality ice creams. Then there will be an opportunity for a Ladies, Men’s, Mixed and Junior doubles pair to challenge the pros in a championship tie-break
match. So if you and a partner want a chance to take on the Davis Cup players you can enter at £10 per pair (non-refundable) the lucky draw. Neither you nor your partner need to be a member of HTC to challenge the Davis Cup pair, we welcome entries from everyone who can join us for the day. Innovate for high performance... Those of us who precede millennials may remember a time when, in exchange for some hard graft, employees received nominal annual pay rises, maybe also a Christmas bonus and, if they stayed the course, recognition for long service. Today such reward schemes are as outmoded as our grandparents’ carriage clocks – and yet still many business owners fear that by setting up commission structures, they will be eroding their profits. The reality is the opposite. Bonuses and commission payments are not about giving money away – they are about creating a high performance culture. Effective schemes reward, motivate and challenge employees, while also generating healthy competition and building team ethos. They can help businesses control salary costs, tether valuable employees and shed those who are not performing. When welldesigned, they will increase productivity along with staff morale. At the heart of most innovative and successful reward programmes is the practice of Management by Objectives (MBO). This involves developing a set of milestones for employees, with agreed timescales and monitoring. Performance needs to be aligned to SMART principles – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timescale. Schemes also need to be fluid, allowing for the updating of objectives and stretching of bonuses for those who exceed targets. MBO is a system that works exceptionally well with sales and business development employees, often described as ‘hunters’. But it can also be adapted for ‘farmers’ – those employees in account management and customer service who nurture long-standing client relationships. It is vital for SMEs to understand that there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ scheme. We regularly design carefully thought through structures that incentivise employees, while minimising pitfalls. Here are some tips : •
Don’t link commission to salary. If you do, you could end up inadvertently rewarding poor performance. Commissions and bonuses recognise exceptional work an employee has done; salaries pay for the work that employees do day-to-day.
•
Don’t automatically offer welcome bonuses. They can be a tool for attracting people you want, but they are a risk, because you are paying before you have any evidence of performance. Try and build some goal-setting into any sign-on payments.
•
Don’t pay attendance bonuses. These are common in manufacturing, but are often counterproductive, because once an employee has been absent for some reason, he or she has lost the incentive to maintain an attendance record. The same advice applies to blanket lateness and error targets.
•
Don’t forget that by law, employees must not be penalised for taking holidays and that consideration needs to be built into any bonus and commission scheme.
•
Do revise any archaic bonuses currently in your pay structure. Christmas bonuses are a nicety. Long service awards may show appreciation for loyalty, but they can encourage apathy. Start thinking about how you can replace such schemes with more targeted incentives.
•
Do commission for low hanging fruit, but grade your reward scales so that you are offering increased sums for more challenging sales.
•
Do stretch bonuses. If you know you can get more from your team, offer extra incentives for additional sales in a given quarter.
•
Do base bonus and commission payments on client invoices paid to ensure your sales force secure client payments.
•
Do consider end of contract bonuses. These can be highly persuasive in keeping someone on the team until the end of a project, and they need not cost an employer any more if the contract terms are positioned effectively.
