Editor’s Letter Welcome to our March issue, it’s really beginning to feel like spring is just around the corner! Our cover photo of the newborn lambs at Tottington was taken last year, we are so lucky to be surrounded by beautiful countryside in Henfield and be able to experience the changing seasons. This month we continue our ‘Get Involved’ article with another 15 brilliant and very different clubs and groups. Please do consider joining one of these friendly sporting, arts, crafts or musical groups, they are ready to welcome you. We plan to feature some of our pre-school, children and youth groups over the following months so please send us details if you would like your child’s club or group to be profiled. Our Henfield B-P Guild have been busy (again!), this time helping to fill a gap in male cancer screening. Prostate cancer is incredibly treatable if caught in good time, if you’re a fella over 45 please go online and book a very simple PSA blood test at the Henfield Hall. It might just save your life. Henfield High Street Jubilee Celebrations
Put a date in your diary for Saturday 4 June from midday when Henfield High Street will be celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in royal style, and you’re all invited! There will be great food, colourful bunting, music, street stalls and entertainment for the whole family. HART donation
Thank you to local company Bankhouse Gates who recently donated £500 to the Henfield Area Response Team (HART) to fund boxes for defibrillators. Christian Myatt-Wells from the company handed over the new defibrillator box which is now located outside the Henfield Leisure Centre. HART maintain defibrillators in several accessible locations around the village and these exterior located boxes now allow 24 hour access, 365 days a year, to anyone suffering a cardiac collapse.

Small Dole Tuesday Club is back to hosting talks in the Small Dole Village Hall. The first will be held on 22 March 2022, starting at 7.30pm. The talk is ‘The Story of the Tower of London - the history, it’s occupants and ceremonies’. The presenters are Alan and Pat Kingshott, now retired Warden of the Tower/ Yeoman of the Guard and it’s a visual presentation, followed by refreshment. Fritz’s magazine sales – not just the Big Issue!
Fritz, who runs her magazine stall outside Budgens on Henfield High Street, would like to say an enormous thank you to the generous customers who have donated various magazines and periodicals to her for resale. She’s been very successful selling New Scientist, National Geographic, various interiors magazines and even Beano and Marvel comics. Many of these are original vintage and highly collectible. If you would like to recycle any magazines which are in good condition, she’d be grateful for donations, which go on to be read and enjoyed by her customers. Changes to how the Henfield Hall is run
The Henfield Hall is a wonderful asset to the village and it’s about to become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). This is a complex business and has required a new constitution to replace the 1964 document. The Hall (which belongs to the people of Henfield, not the Parish Council), will continue to recognise not-for-profit organisations who use the hall regularly as group members who will be able to nominate one of their number to stand as a Hall trustee. However, to involve more local people in the strategic and day-to-day business of the Hall, membership is being offered to individuals living in the area. Membership will be free and those interested will be asked to complete a membership form which will ask why they want to get involved and details of their membership of other local organisations. Many of our visitors are interested in seeing what we all do with our space and are not expecting to see ‘Chelsea Garden Show’ standards so why don’t you have a go? In addition, we are seeking locally based artists that would like to have the opportunity to exhibit their work in a garden setting or one of our larger indoor community venues and also musicians who would like to come and play during the Festival. New 40mph Traffic Regulation Order between Barrow Hill and Woods Mill
You may remember the campaign to reduce the speed limit on the A2037 Shoreham Road between Barrow Hill and Woods Mill, following another dreadful fatality on that stretch of road. West Sussex County Council have now confirmed that the 40mph speed enforcement has been approved - great news! A huge thank you David Stanton who led the campaign. David commented: “This TRO was supported by over 200 signatories from Henfield residents to a petition organised by myself, a resident on this road, following the last fatality just north of the Henfield Business Park. “Our grateful thanks go to Henfield Parish Council, and the WSCC Councillor for the area Sarah Payne, whose support was key in achieving this. The TRO will now move into the design phase, hopefully for implementation later this year.” Councillor Sarah Payne from WSCC, Henfield Parish Council and to everyone who signed the petition, we hope this will make the road safer for users and residents. Councillor Sarah Payne said: “As County Councillor, I represent the community’s voice when changes like this are needed. I’m delighted that West Sussex County Council have listened and agreed with the petition raised by David Stanton in order to make this change in speed limit, to help improve road safety in Henfield.”

Dutch painters were a major force in the 16th and 17th centuries and their influence spanned Europe, from Pieter Breughel to Jan Vermeer and their mastery was felt in France and England. The Henfield Garden Club will be welcoming local gardener Barry Newman to give a talk on ‘The Modern Kitchen Garden’ in the Henfield Hall on Friday, 4 March (7 for 7.30 pm). Barry lives in Partridge Green and is a well-known grower, exhibitor and lecturer. He is Chairman of the Southern Region of the National Vegetable Society and serves on its National Executive. As well as being a senior NVS judge, Barry also serves on the judging panel of The Royal Horticultural Society and South & Southeast Region in Bloom. Barry trained in Horticulture at Pershore, York and Bath Botanical Gardens. Free coffee or tea and a biscuit will be served at 7pm and there will be a raffle. Discovering MacDonald Gill: Architect, Artist and Mapmaker Macdonald Gill, brother of the sculptor and typographer Eric Gill, was an architect, graphic designer and letterer, best known for his pictorial maps, painted maps for Arts and Crafts houses, murals for Cunard liners and eye-catching publicity posters. This illustrated lecture on 14 March 2022 by his great-niece Caroline Walker at the Steyning Centre, Fletcher’s Croft at 10am presents a colourful overview of his personal life and artistic achievements.

Charity fundraiser success - £2,670 raised!
Extraordinary Meeting of Hope
On Sunday 6 February the Tingey family held a fundraiser for St Barnabas House Hospice at The Railway Tavern in Henfield. Tom Jones and Elvis tribute acts were the attractions as was a very generous raffle, donated by lots of local businesses. A lot of fun was had and everyone danced the night away. An extraordinary gathering of environmentallydriven people took place on 19 January 2022 bringing together a community and sharing knowledge, projects and inspiration. The focus was the work of a wide variety of environmental advocates and groups in Horsham District’s villages, and how Sussex Green Living has been working with them. Sussex Green Living launched the first Repair Café in West Sussex in October 2017 with the help of the Horsham Quakers. Since then we have helped set up a dozen others. The Repair Café is now just a part of the Sussex Green Hub which includes the Horsham Community Fridge which freely shares supermarket food which otherwise would go to waste. In 2019 our environmental network grew again with a ‘World SOS Climate Emergency Day’ meeting attended by 126 people. Out of this the South East Climate Alliance was born – a coalition of environmental, faith and community groups. In 2020 we held weekly online Horsham Climate Cafes and became a charity. Last year we transformed our environmental education taking it to the people, using our Inspiration Eco Station (1974 retrofitted milk float) and the Bright New Future Roadshow. We are keen to explore ways we can work more formally with the councils to magnify our impact in Horsham District. For more information,

After a break of two years for reasons we know all too well, the Kinder Living Home Show returns to Horsham on the weekend of 5 and 6 March. The show brings together local businesses, charities and community groups who all share a goal of encouraging people to make more sustainable choices in their homes, gardens and daily lives. In the two years since the last show Kinder Living has become a Community Interest Company, its directors committed to providing information and encouragement, whilst supporting local sustainable businesses. The show is run on a ‘not for profit’ basis and is free to enter. Kinder Living Director and original founder of the event Jeanette Mercer said “It’s been a nerveracking time to plan a public event, not knowing what might change at any point, but we were determined to give it our best shot. So many small local businesses need a boost right now and sustainability only grows more important as time passes. YOUR PSA LEVELS?
P
rostate cancer is a male-only disease and is the third most common cancer to die from in the UK, after lung and bowel cancer. Currently 45,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed each year which means that 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is not always life-threatening, but the earlier you catch it the more likely it is to be cured. Regular screening through a simple blood test can help diagnose prostate cancer early and this is why Henfield B-P Guild, in partnership with the Prostate Cancer Support Organisation (PCaSO), are offering free PSA blood tests on Saturday 2 April in the Henfield Hall for men over the age of 45. The Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is a small protein molecule produced by the prostate gland and is present in all men. The PSA is a simple blood test which checks for raised levels of PSA which may indicate health concerns. However, a raised reading does not always mean you have cancer; high levels of PSA can also be caused by infection or enlargement of the prostate (as often happens with older men), or vigorous exercise (such as bike riding). If your test does show raised levels, you are strongly encouraged to make an appointment with your GP for further checks. To get your PSA blood test on 2 April in the Henfield Hall, go to the PCaSO website (pcaso. org/psa-testing/) and book your appointment at 18 | BN5 Magazine
a time convenient to you. Booking is absolutely essential. On the day, a blood sample will be taken by a trained phlebotomist, just like in a hospital or a doctors surgery, and will take just two or three minutes. The sample will then be taken to a laboratory (often a local hospital) where it will be analysed by professionals and the results will be posted or emailed back to you. The PCaSO use a ‘traffic light’ system for your results: green means that your PSA levels are normal; amber means that they are slightly raised and you should contact your GP for further checks; red means that they are raised and that you should contact your GP for further checks. It is important to understand that the PSA test does not diagnose cancer or any other illness – that is job of your doctor. Ideally all men over 45 should get a PSA blood test on a regular basis so that you and your GP can track any changes over time. There is currently no NHS screening programme and so it is support groups such as PCaSO who organise screening sessions for men around the country. Although they do this as a free service, each test costs them around £12 - £15 to administer, so donations are very welcome if you can afford to do so.

What are the symptoms of prostate cancer? Early prostate cancer does not usually cause any symptoms. If the cancer has grown large enough to put pressure on your urethra, the symptoms of prostate cancer can be difficult to distinguish from those of prostate enlargement. They may include: needing to pee more frequently, often • during the night needing to rush to the toilet • difficulty in starting to pee (hesitancy) • straining or taking a long time while • peeing weak flow • feeling that your bladder has not fully • emptied blood in urine or semen • see your GP if you have any of should You these symptoms. What is the prostate?
The prostate is a small gland found only in men and trans-women. It surrounds the tube that carries urine out of the body (urethra). The prostate gland produces a thick, white fluid that gets mixed with sperm to create semen. The prostate gland is about the size and shape of a walnut but tends to get bigger as you get older.

The PCaSO helpline is provided by the National Federation of Prostate Cancer Support Groups, known as Tackle Prostate, and is manned by people who have been through the disease. You can call them on 0800 035 5302 and talk freely or if you prefer you can email them on helpline@ tackleprostate.org (please note the helpline number is not for booking PSA tests or for test result queries). There are so many fantastic clubs and groups in Henfield that we had too many to fit into our February edition! So here is part two, a wide variety of groups catering for all different interests, hobbies and pastimes. You will also find a list of all clubs and groups (all updated with their latest information) on our website www.henfieldbn5.co.uk too. Whether it’s a long-standing hobby that you want to get back into, or something you’ve never tried before, why not make 2022 the year to get involved? Many clubs allow you to try one session for free before you commit and they are all very welcoming – everyone has been the new person at some point! So far we have focused on adults clubs, but we will be featuring some of the many different clubs for children that there are in and around Henfield in a future edition. We are the Henfield branch of the Baden Powell (B-P) Guild and meet on the first Thursday of the month from 8pm at the Henfield Guide Hut in Staples Barn. We are a friendly, likeminded group of individuals who enjoy being able to give something back to our local community. The Henfield B-P Guild is very active organising many fundraising activities, including taking Santa around the village at Christmas time, organising the annual Senior Citizens Outing & Dinner, and erecting and decorating the village Christmas tree. We also hire and erect marquees, run jumble sales and provide barbecues at events such as the village Summer Fayre. Sometimes, we just lend a helping hand behind the scenes to other groups and individuals in and around the village. The monies raised are all used for good causes in and around the local area. We particularly support youth organisations based in the village such as the Scouts, Guides, Youth Club and on occasion, youngsters from these organisations who are seeking to raise sponsorship to undertake projects in developing countries. We also enjoy a healthy social scene with many differing activities and camaraderie. Membership fees are £10 annually. New members are very welcome.

Henfield Spinning & Weaving Group We are a friendly group of spinners, weavers, knitters and other crafters meeting twice monthly for mutual help and encouragement. We are always interested in visiting special exhibitions and craft centres for outings and inspiration. We meet on the first and third Wednesdays of each month (except August) between 10am and 1pm at the Henfield Guide Hut off Staples Barn Lane. Anyone interested in this satisfying and rewarding craft would be most welcome to join us for our relaxed, friendly and informal meetings. Membership fees are £30 per annum. Partridge Green Players The Partridge Green Players has a long history of putting on productions twice a year in May and November at the Partridge Green Village Hall. We are a small friendly group of people, of all ages, who welcome newcomers to join in all our activities, whether social or performing, backstage or front of house. One way to get involved on a more informal basis is to join us at our regular play-reading sessions which we hold at The Partridge Pub in Partridge Green on the first Monday of the month from 7.30pm onwards. We grab a drink and then sit around as a group reading through a play. It’s a good way to meet the members of the group and try out a part or two without having to get up on stage!

Friends of Henfield Museum The aim of Friends of Henfield Museum is to support, promote and improve Henfield Museum, while breathing life into the stories behind the people and objects that make up our local history. We were established in 2014 and currently have over 70 members Henfield Museum acts as a guardian and conservator of artefacts telling the story of our area from the Stone Age to today. Friends gain free, or discounted access to our talks and trips, receive our newsletter and can support our research (both written and oral histories), publishing activities and museum acquisitions funding. The Friends lead and support a number of standalone and ongoing heritage projects as well as providing finance for museum acquisiti ons. Membership is open to all who are interested in preserving the heritage of Henfield and our local area. Individual membership (£10) and family membership (£15) is open to all. Non-members are always welcome to attend talks and meeting costs vary, but we always aim to keep them affordable. We also run occasional events including history talks, trips to other museums or sites, plus socials. We welcome anyone who can offer their time or specific expertise either on or working with the Committee.

Short Mat Bowls Sometimes known as the Friday Friends we were formerly known as ‘Henfield Short Mat Bowls Club’. However after a long lock-down absence and with an ageing membership, we felt we no longer needed the formality of a ‘club’ status with all the formality that it entailed. The same group of friends is once again playing the game of short mat bowls every Friday morning at the Henfield Hall from 10am to 12pm (come by at 9.45am) as we have done for 30 years. Please come and join us. There’s no longer an annual subscription to pay or membership fees to the National Association, and you won’t be asked to be on the committee! Just come for a game and enjoy the morning in the warm out of the winter rain. There are sets of bowls for you to use, or bring your own ‘outdoor woods’, but please you must change your shoes for flat soled ones before you get on a mat. The fee is £3 per morning including tea and biscuits. We hope to see you soon.

The Henfield Shed The Henfield Shed is a local community initiative to address exclusion and isolation amongst older men. It’s a member of the UK Men’s Shed Association and builds on the success of the world-wide Sheds movement. Henfield History Group Henfield History Group meets in the Henfield Hall on the second Tuesday of every month (with the exception of August) from 8pm - 9.30pm for presentations on local, national or sometimes international history from a variety of speakers. During the summer months we also organise outings to places of interest and local guided walks. Our yearly programme comes out in April but during these unsettled times this may be subject to change in which case we will notify our members via email. Visitors are welcome and can find our programme in the museum or library information folder. Annual membership is £10 (single) or £18 (dual) and nonmember admission is £3 per session.

Friends of St Peter’s The Friends of St Peter’s (FOSP) is a secular organisation whose aim is to raise funds to keep the beautiful church of St Peter’s in good repair. We do this by holding various events throughout the year which are aimed at appealing to a broad crosssection of the community, whatever their beliefs. Prior to the pandemic these events included, amongst other things: musical performances; a summer social, with excellent food, drink and company; talks on all sorts of topics and a very popular New Year’s Brunch. We would like to encourage people who are interested in maintaining the beauty of the Church building for generations to come, to contact us with a view to becoming a member or, if you would prefer to become more actively involved, to join our committee.

Circle Dance Group We are a friendly, supportive group and all are welcome to our session at the Henfield Leisure Centre on Thursdays (term-time only) from 10.15am – 12pm and we start dancing again on 3rd March. No experience is needed to join us but we do advise you to wear clothing that is easy to move around in. We learn a few new dances each term but also enjoy refreshing the ones we have learned before. We dance to lovely recorded music from all parts of the world, some is contemporary and some is traditional. This group offers a great way to do some gentle exercise and movement, to keep dancing and to make friends. Regular members pay £5.50 per session. The Arts Society The Arts Society Henfield which meets on the second Monday of the month (except July & August) at 2.30pm has a varied programme of fascinating and illustrated lectures about art, architecture, music and many other cultural subjects given by entertaining and knowledgeable professional speakers. Several days of special interest are held annually devoted to specific subjects, and day trips are made to interesting cultural venues. We welcome new members. Come along to The Henfield Hall and try one of our talks. We will be delighted to see you! Our annual subscription is £34 per person and guests are welcome at a cost of £8 per lecture.

Henfield Football Club Henfield football club has been active in the village since 1899. Based at the Eric Holder pavilion on the Kingsfield, we currently run two senior mens teams who play in the West Sussex league and alongside that we have a VETS team for over 35s who play friendlies on a Sunday. We also run numerous junior boys and girls sides up to Under 16s. Annual memberships are £45 - £60 depending on age group. Our club bar is always open to all on senior match days at the football pavilion from 1pm, so please feel free to pop in for a drink and enjoy some local football. No membership needed everyone is welcome. We are a forward thinking football club and want to make football enjoyable for our 350+ members, but as a community minded club we also want to engage with the residents of the village and support schemes that help everyone. We are looking to improve our facilities at the Kingsfield with a new clubhouse as well, with planning permission in progress. Committee meetings are regularly held at the football pavilion as we always look to move forward and improve how Henfield FC is run both on and off the pitch.

Heber Opera Heber Opera has been bringing its speciality ‘in the round’ productions, sung in English, to audiences in community spaces around Sussex for over 30 years. Performing ‘in the round’ ensures that the full dramatic flow is accessible to the whole audience – the opera truly is close enough to touch! With its chorus of enthusiastic local singers, Heber Opera is self-funded, raising funds to stage productions throughout the year with concerts, craft fairs, afternoon teas, carol singing and other activities. If you would like to get involved, we welcome new singers (you don’t need to be a Pavarotti, as long as you can hold a tune!) and also need helpers both backstage and front-of-house and with making scenery, props and costumes. Henfield Cricket Club Henfield Cricket Club, formed in 1771, is one of the oldest cricket clubs in the world, playing in Division Four East of the Sussex League. We welcome new members, both playing and social. If you are interested in joining the club, please contact the secretary. Matches take place on the Henfield Common usually every Saturday and Sunday between the middle of April and the end of September. The Pavilion is always open for teas and coffees and has a licensed bar- everybody is welcome! he Henfield Spinning and Weaving Group have just enjoyed their 40th Birthday and so we felt it was a good time to celebrate and share the story of this wonderful pastime. The Group started after a small number of ladies met in the Henfield Hall in the Garden Room in 1981 to learn how to spin. They were taught by a lady called Rosemary Tills who some of you may remember. When the classes finished it was generally felt by all those who had attended that they needed to practice regularly and so the Henfield Spinning and Weaving Group came into being. For the first 20 years the group was quite small and initially they met in each other’s homes. Over the years the group has met in various venues in the village including the old Corpus Christi Church Hall, the Garden Room at Potwell, the Lounge in Fabians Way and Rayner Court (by kind permission of Barchester homes). However with the renewed interest in home crafts over the last 15 years, numbers of the group have grown to 20 plus and a larger space is needed, so the Spinners are now using the Henfield Guide Hut as our regular meeting venue. We have a wide interest in wool-related crafts and are eager to learn more and share all aspects of working with wool. It can be by knitting, crochet, felting, dyeing and many different types of weaving. We share patterns, ideas and methods, helping each other out when necessary. We embrace all types of weaving and we even

learnt an ancient type of French weaving on a circular loom. We have ‘dyeing days’ when we experiment with plants, leaves, flowers and many other natural products to create a beautiful range of complimentary colours and we’ve also tried tie-dyeing in microwaves! As a group we have visited so many interesting places all related to our craft. We have enjoyed outings to farms with pedigree flocks of sheep, llamas, alpacas and goats, both angora and cashgora. We have also visited farms at lambing and shearing times and are fortunate to obtain fleeces from many local farmers. We have been asked to demonstrate our skills at special exhibitions, the Henfield Summer Show, craft fairs, Village evenings, a Country Fayre at Shermanbury and we were part of the Living Advent event held just before Christmas in the Village. At a visit to St Peters Primary School the children had opportunity to see up close how to spin and also how Sleeping Beauty couldn’t possibly have pricked her finger as there are no sharp edges on a Spinning Wheel! If you would like to join us we now meet at The Guide Hut which is just off Staples Barn Lane on the first and third Wednesday from 10am to 1pm. We welcome new members to join us at our relaxed and informal meetings where between us, we can teach and encourage newcomers to rekindle forgotten skills. enfield Theatre Company (HTC) has hit the ground running, after eighteen months of Covid related cancellations and disappointments. The October play, The Government Inspector, was entered into the Brighton and Hove Arts Council Drama Awards event and came out with the award for the best set design as well as the special Adjudicator’s Award which was for “having the ambition to tackle a big classic text and carrying it off with confidence and exuberance”. While that was going on, rehearsals for Treasure Island – The Panto, were well under way and that production delighted audiences in six performances in mid January. Henfield loved it and the team said that the smiles on the faces of everyone leaving The Henfield Hall made it all worthwhile. The next production that HTC has in store is Alan Ayckbourn’s classic comedy Bedroom Farce. This was originally written in the early 1970s and was performed by the former Henfield Players many years ago, so HTC says that it’s now time to bring it back to their Henfield audiences and to remind us all of the days before computers and mobile phones! This very funny play takes place over the course of one evening and portrays four couples in three different bedrooms. Ernest and Delia are the parents of Trevor, who is having difficulty understanding his neurotic young wife,

Susannah. Kate and Malcolm, a DIY failure, are holding a house warming party. Nick is unable to go to the party because he has hurt his back and is confined to bed, but his wife Jan, formerly Trevor’s girlfriend, is determined to go on her own. It is a recipe for disaster when they all get together, with their many problems, played out in the bedroom! Alan Ayckbourn doesn’t disappoint with his comedic interpretation of the problems of the four couples, some of which may seem familiar. The play is directed by Anne Stern, a very experienced director and actor. She said that she is delighted that she and the team have been able to assemble an excellent cast, and she is so pleased to finally get Bedroom Farce onto the stage after the delays caused by Covid. Our theatre company is on a roll so prepare to be entertained by these talented players. The production will be staged at The Henfield Hall from Thursday 17th to Saturday 19th March at 7.45pm, with a matinée at 2.30pm on the Saturday. Raising Finance Of course, it is a given, finances are critical to the survival of your business. It is therefore very important to regularly monitor its flow through the business, so that you can manage its peaks and troughs. Finance is available in many different forms, which suit various different businesses. It is essential to ensure that the finance you raise for your business is not only sufficient for the purpose, but is the right type for your business.
Which type of finance? In simple terms, there are only two predominant types of finance: equity and debt. They are very different and will have contrasting effects on your business as it develops and grows. Generally speaking the cost of debt is lower than equity finance, because the risk is technically lower. Equity is the term given to the finance invested in the business in return for a share in the ownership of the company. Debt relates to money lent to your business, which will eventually be repaid back after an agreed period. Whilst it is used within your business, you will be required to pay an amount of interest to the lender for the use of their money. There are many different types of financial instruments that take on varying characteristics of debt and equity. Some of these can be complex and often the distinction between debt or equity becomes very blurred.

The amount of debt will be restricted by the overall size of the business, its ability to pay the interest charges and how equity has been introduced.
