Beaver & Cub activity day
On Saturday 22 April, 1st Henfield Beavers and younger Cubs had an exciting activity day at Broadstone Warren in the Ashdown Forest. These mainly 6-8 year olds all went up the climbing wall, dangled in the air while crate stacking, explored underground in the caving tunnels and discovered the expanse of the Ashdown forest with a navigation hike.
It was an amazing day and we would like to thank the BP Guild Henfield for their contribution to the significant cost of coach hire to transport everyone, thereby reducing the environmental footprint of the day and supporting our young people have a wonderful experience and learning new skills. A massive thank you to all the Leaders that supported the event and giving the boys and girls of our younger sections a truly adventurous day.

Following the success of last year’s event, Brahms in the Boneyard, the Friends of St Giles have decided to up the tempo a little for this years’ event on 22 July 2023. We have been lucky to secure the Mark Travers Quintet, a talented group of Sussex musicians which includes Mark Travers on the trumpet and Sam Nixon a wellknown singer.
This is our version of a Glyndebourne imitation and people should bring a picnic, chairs, rugs etc. Gates will open at 6.15pm with the jazz starting at 7pm. Curtain will be at 7.30pm. Facilities include car park, toilet, raffle, wine bar and Indian Street Food stall.
St Giles is raising money to maintain the fabric of this historical church. We need to lay a new footpath and a loop system for the hard of hearing. Tickets (£15) available from Marcus Grimes - children under 16 free. Come and join us and enjoy a pleasant evensong with a difference.

Prostate Cancer awareness and testing event
Local MP Andrew Griffith dropped into Henfield Village Hall to meet volunteers running the latest Prostate Cancer awareness and testing event. The Prostate Cancer Support Organisation (PcaSO) - a charity for men diagnosed with prostate cancer run by patients diagnosed with prostate cancer – ran the PSA Testing Event. Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in men. Each year in the UK over 47,000 men are diagnosed with it and about 11,000 men die of it. The PCaSO arranges events where men over 45 can have a free test which is a short blood test with results back in around a week. They work with the local branches of the Lions, Rotary and Freemason clubs who help promote the tests and volunteer with the organisation on the day. Since they started PSA testing in 2011, they have now arranged over 26,000 PSA tests in Hampshire, Sussex and Dorset.
Their next local PSA testing session is in Horsham on Saturday the 3 June. To book a free test for yourself or someone you care about, book online at their website www.pcaso.org.
PCaSO is entirely run by prostate cancer patients and their families for prostate cancer patients and their families. They have no offices, highly paid executives or any paid staff at all. Everyone is a volunteer.

Cherish Care
We are deeply saddened to hear the announcement that Cherish Care is due to close. James, Denise and their staff supported our community with high-quality home care provision for 17 years, working above and beyond during the Covid lockdowns. It has been a pleasure to watch their business grow, we featured their launch in an early edition of BN5 and have been pleased to bring news of the awards and high grades they’ve achieved over the years. They’ve given wonderful care to many families in Henfield and the surrounding villages and will be hugely missed. We would like to thank them for all their support and hard work and wish them well in the future.

Free High Cholesterol Workshop
High cholesterol increases our likelihood of developing cardiovascular conditions such as a heart attack or stroke. For some of us our risk of high cholesterol may be greater due to current lifestyle habits or family history. High Cholesterol is most commonly diagnosed in people between the ages of 40 and 59 so being aware of our risks is important to ensure we make timely changes.
Horsham Wellbeing offer an ‘Understanding Cholesterol’ workshop which looks at the role of cholesterol in the body and ways in which we can lower raised levels with small, manageable changes. Delivered in a small group setting, this workshop will be led by one of our Wellbeing Advisors at the Henfield Hall and is free to all who work or live within the Horsham District. If you have an increased risk of high cholesterol why not join this session? Contact our team (01403 215111 or info@horshamdistrictwellbeing.org.uk) to book your free place on Wednesday 7 June from 2-3.30pm in the Henfield Hall.

Tennis Club Pavilion Celebration
On Friday 28 April Henfield Tennis Club officially reopened their Pavilion following flooding in February 2021. The opportunity had also been taken to install full length windows making the club lighter and brighter; to future proof the timber walls; to improve drainage; and to generally modernise.
The celebrations started with a fun tennis doubles tournament involving both club members and guests, followed by the formal Pavilion Opening Ceremony. The Club Chair, Wendy Whittaker, thanked all involved in the project particularly former club Chair and Project Manager
Martin Tooth and local contractors Nigel and Adam Parsons. Other guests included Parish Councillors (Mike Morgan and Gill Perry) and representatives from the Football Club, Youth Clubs and the Leisure Centre. Mike cut the ribbon and the party commenced! UK’s largest outdoor art installation to open at Wakehurst
Wakehurst, Kew’s wild botanic garden in Sussex, will soon be home to one of the UK’s largest outdoor art installations. Commissioned to wrap the Elizabethan Mansion, currently undergoing an extensive roof restoration, ‘Planet Wakehurst’ is a bespoke photo montage from Australian-born artist Catherine Nelson. Using photography of plants from across the 535-acre site captured in summer 2022, the dazzling installation is a celebration of Wakehurst’s biodiversity, from the colourful blooms of the abundant Water Gardens to the towering Giant Redwoods of California in Horsebridge Wood.
Measuring over 1550m2, Nelson’s UK premiere installation will form the equivalent of 25 double decker buses, wrapping around three sides of the Mansion. Nelson spent hot summer days in 2022 documenting the vast site and, over the course of six months, used the hundreds of photographs captured to create the immense digital collage. The installation will also house a new viewing platform. Raised 33ft above ground level, the lookout point will carve out a new experience for visitors to the Sussex site, affording stunning views across the Mansion lawns and out to the Sussex Downs beyond.

David Silverson - 1939 to 2023
Maureen and the Silverson family would like to thank everyone for their kindness and support during David’s last illness. Many will know David from his association with Henfield Cricket Club. He has been described by its President as one of the club’s greatest all-round cricketers - a member for 65 years, a playing career spanning 53 years, scoring 22,430 runs and taking 1,403 wickets. He was also devoted to Henfield’s cricket traditions and ensuring that the club prospered during his time with it.
Others will remember David as a Sussex Countryman - admiring his perfectly kept vegetable garden, knowing his delight in walking his terriers or working his ferrets, and respecting his knowledge of nature and how to live in harmony with it. David was also an inspiring teacher, as generations of mechanical engineering students at Worthing and Crawley Technical Colleges will confirm - a skill which extended both to cricket coaching and introducing young friends to the countryside and country pursuits in his spare time.
Whatever your memories, please come and share them with us on Sunday 11 June at the Cricket Club pavilion between 3 and 6 pm.

BN5 Birds
Summer is just about here and our Spring/ Summer migrants will have arrived. Here is a guide to where you should be able to see and hear some of these birds. In the High Street Swifts have nests in the Swift boxes at Stokes and at the back of The Club and under the eaves of Southdown Galleries, you can see these small dark anchor shaped birds and hear them zooming around ‘screaming’.
Also in the High Street there are House Martin nests under the eaves of RPS Food and Wine, MyDentist and Marcus Grimes These small black and white birds can be seen as they fly into their nests and you can hear them ‘chattering’. I’m sure quite a few of you, during May, will have heard the Cuckoo calling from the Furners Lane area and north of the river towards Partridge Green. There have been Nightingales singing to the south of Henfield behind Braziers garage and at Southview, they are in full song in May but you may be lucky to hear them in early June. Resident and migrant birds should be paired up by June but the many male birds will continue singing to continue claiming their territory. Go south along the Downslink and you will see and hear Blackcaps, Chiffchaffs and Whitethroats. Turn left on to a footpath before Stretham Bridge and walk along the Mill Stream where there are Cetti’s Warblers and Reed Warblers in the reeds Turn left on to a footpath that goes back into the village and you may see Swallows. Even if you can’t identify these birds you will be able to hear the beautiful birdsong of our migrant and resident birds. The Henfield Birdwatch website www.henfieldbirdwatch.co.uk can help you with identification.

Flagging up Climate Action!
The Sussex Prairie Garden is taking part in an initiative to make flags to be displayed in the garden bearing messages for positive action to be taken to combat Climate Change. The exhibition of the flags in the garden will take place during our 2023 and 2024 season of opening (June to mid-October)
The flags should be made of re-used and repurposed cotton or natural fabrics such as old pillow cases, tea-towels , t-shirts etc. Flags made in natural materials will gradually blow apart and break down in the winds and rain, and will also provide natural nesting materials for wildlife as they disintegrate. They will act as a natural mulch and will add to the natural habitat in time in our garden.
Each flag should be A4 size (the size of a regular piece of paper) or slightly smaller A5 size and should have a climate action message or pledge stitched, written or printed onto it, together with any embellishments you wish to add.
You can get inspiration for your flag from the Sussex Green Hub in Horsham (last Saturday of every month from 10am-4pm in the United Reformed Church, 45 Springfield Rd, Horsham RH12 1PT), or come and see the Sussex Green Living Stand at the Handmade Craft Fair at Sussex Prairie Garden on 15-16 July 11am until 5pm. You can drop your completed flag off at the Sussex Green Hub, the Repair Café at the Henfield Market on Monday Mornings, or at the Sussex Prairie Garden when it’s open (Wednesdays to Sunday from 1 June to 15 October or post to Dutch Barn, Morlands Farm, Wheatsheaf Road, Henfield BN5, 9AT). As soon as we receive your flag it will be hung up on display in the Sussex Prairie Garden!

Midsummer ‘jogathon’ in support of Eric Williams
To celebrate midsummer on Saturday 24 June, Henfield Joggers invite you to run, jog, walk, or stroll with your family and dogs along a special route taking in some of our beautiful countryside between 9am and 9pm.
The start and finish is at the Cabin at Berrett’s Farm (you’ll know the start by the Henfield Joggers inflatable green arch!) where not only will welcoming coffee and snacks be available to buy, but Rushfields will be serving up Breakfast all morning and then the Gorilla Kitchen Pizza will be opening from 4pm and through the evening.
The route is 4 miles long and specially chosen to take in some of the information points from the Hidden Henfield website. It’s completely on public footpaths and will be additionally signposted on the day. For the technically able you can also use this QR code: to connect
to the FREE RunGo app and follow the route on your mobile. If you turn your volume up (or use headphones) it’s voice guided so will help you navigate your way!
As it’s midsummer, we’re opening the route from 9am until 9pm and you can complete the course as many times as you like! Most will take a wander and then eat and drink, but a hardy few may want to test themselves and see how many miles they can rack up – either way is fine!
Now for the serious part. At the start/finish we’re asking for a completely voluntary donation to the Eric Williams Charity Appeal. Eric is a local legend in Henfield who suffered a serious spinal injury and needs resources to convert his house to a new way of living.
Our suggested donation is £1 for every time you pass under the green arch, but it’s completely up to you! You can donate online or get more information using the QR code above.

Coronation Fun!
As they did 70 years ago for Queen Elizabeth II, Henfield celebrated the coronation of King Charles III in style!
In the run up to the coronation itself the Dove Nursery had a special day where the children came dressed as kings, queens, princesses, knights and soldiers. They all made crowns, took part in royal races, waved flags and received a very special keepsake medal and certificate. The celebrations finished with a picnic lunch and the children all agreed it had been a happy and exciting day!
The Henfield Ladybirds also got together at the Henfield Hall for a special Coronation event where they too made their own coronation crowns.
Whilst the weather was a bit miserable for the actual coronation itself on Saturday 6 May, the sun came out in force for community celebrations on Sunday 7 May! Henfield Parish Council organised a successful family fun day on the Rothery Field in conjunction with the BP Guild. With free sports and craft activities during the day and a BBQ, bar and music in the evening, it all finished off with the lighting of the Henfield Beacon. Residents at both Beechings and Wantley also got together locally to organise fantastic street parties, and Corpus Christi Church organised a shared brunch for their congregation.
Along with the volunteering at the Community Orchard on the bank holiday Monday (see the separate article in this magazine), many happy memories were made over the Coronation weekend which will be treasured for years to come.

As part of the Coronation Bank Holiday weekend Big Help Out, Henfield Scouts of all ages joined members of Sustainable Henfield 2030 and headed over to the Community Orchard at Sandpit Field on Monday 8 May to carry out some volunteer work. Trees were mulched, wildflowers sown, bug hotels built, litter picked and a ‘dead hedge’ created, but more importantly a huge amount of fun was had!
Some Scouts, Cubs and Beavers also helped staff at Red Oaks Care Home serve afternoon tea on Sunday 7 May where they enjoyed chatting to the residents. A huge thank you to everyone who came and helped out at both events.
To find out more about volunteering with either organisation do get in touch – they would love to hear from you!

Coronation Corgi
One of the subjects of my last article was the sad loss of our old Labrador, Rye. Don’t worry, I won’t turn this into a eulogy, but it did bring into focus that with the passing of a pet, often comes the dilemma of if, or when, to get another addition to the family. Many people feel guilty about looking for another pet shortly after losing one because it can feel somehow disrespectful to the one that they have lost. My advice here is that there is no right or wrong decision to be made and you should do what feels right for you. I deliberately avoided using the word “replacement” because another pet is a new character, a new personality and will add a new dimension to the household that they enter - even if they are the same species and breed as their predecessor. Acquiring a new pet does not diminish the memories of another and if you have a household where there has always been a four legged friend it can feel decidedly empty without one.
We’ve always been predominantly a Labrador family, but for reasons I can’t quite explain, I have always had a soft spot for a Corgi. Despite the influence of the late Queen, Corgi’s aren’t the most common of breeds, but in February this year I was made aware (you know who you are!) of a relatively local puppy that was available. While we weren’t actively on the look-out for another dog, sometimes you have to accept fate and so it was that in late February, Jorge the Corgi joined familia Underwood.
Despite seeing many puppies of all shapes and sizes every week, it wasn’t until taking possession of our new shortlegged friend that it became so apparent how different a Corgi’s mentality is from a Labrador, and indeed how
defined are some of the traits exhibited by different breeds. Rather than being happy for any attention and being prepared to circumnavigate a reservoir for a treat, young Jorge definitely needs more incentive than a pat on the head and a “Coachie” to motivate him! Temperament is another area which can vary widely between dogs – even of the same breed. Some are boisterous, some are reserved, some are anxious from the get-go, some are wilful, some are obliging. There is definitely an element of nature and nurture here – and certainly getting a puppy at around 8 weeks will allow training “good habits” in the most formative time of their lives.
We acquired Jorge at 10 weeks and he was definitely of the more “nervous” disposition. A new human or canine face would often precipitate a piddle on the floor, so needless to say we’ve gone through a few cans of Vanish pet-friendly carpet cleaner! What was very useful were the puppy socialisation classes run by our nurses Lauren and Hayley on Tuesdays at Partridge Green. Three sessions of buddying up with a Daschund, a Vizla and a Jack Russell went a long way to improving Corgi confidence. The sessions are also a great opportunity to get advice on all aspects of puppy training and care from our knowledgeable team – just get in touch if you are interested.
Overall, owning a new puppy is a great experience, but also a reminder that while it can be hard work at the beginning, early training will pay dividends in the long run. The consolation is that I’m confident Jorge won’t be leaving any deposits on our kitchen floor within a few weeks. In contrast, Annelise’s attempts to train the male members of our household to put the toilet seat down have been going on for years, with no feasible end in sight!

Four talented local artists and makers are showcasing their work at Ash House, Barrow Hill, BN5 9DN this June - a lovely location with a stunning house and garden set against the backdrop of the South Downs.
Textile and leather designer Lyn Fryer, who lives at Ash House, will be showing her collection of handmade leather bags and quilts. Working with both new and upcycled leather, Lyn creates colourful items which are unique and purposeful.
Mark Wilson is a semi-abstract sea and landscape artist working in oils. Mark uses a palette knife and rag to blend and drag the paint and will also add strands of rope fibre or grounddown coloured slate, sheep’s wool or sea-salt to add texture.
Precious metal jeweller Alison Crowe, will show her large range of ethically produced contemporary silver and gemstone pieces inspired by natural forms and early 20th century art. Every piece is individually designed and handmade in Henfield.
Russ Iden will be showing his paintings, colourful hand-painted pots and textiles. Russ’s specialities range from designing and painting murals for both domestic and commercial premises, to handpainted bespoke ceramic plant pots featuring cartoon characters and local scenes.

Get more out of Life in Henfield
Come along to Henfield Hall on Saturday 24 June anytime between 10.30am and 2.30pm.
Henfield has over 100 organisations to get involved with. Over 50 of these, covering a huge range of interests, will be represented at this event- from children’s activities to adult hobbies and interests. There is no entry fee so make this an opportunity to find out what Henfield has to offer that you can join in with. As well as our local groups, we are also inviting a number of organisations within the Horsham District with an interest in Henfield. If you’d like to give something back to the community, there will be plenty of volunteering opportunities to investigate as well.
The Pandemic brought life to a standstill for many of us but over the past year our organisations have worked hard to recover and are now thriving again with renewed energy. Whatever your interest we hope you will find the right group here for you. However, if you don’t find what you’re looking for, this is also your chance to speak to one of our organisers who will be able to give advice on the possible options.
In addition, the Henfield Museum, which is in the
same building, will be open. If you’ve not visited before, do take the opportunity to pop in as it has a display of fascinating local artefacts which are regularly updated. Visit the museum’s website for more information, www.henfieldmuseum.org. If you’re interested in being a museum volunteer, the curator will be delighted to speak to you. There will be delicious refreshment for you to buy from the Henfield Scouts and the Henfield Hall will be opening the bar at lunch time. Please support these two worthy groups. If the weather is fine, the hall garden will be open.
Nearer the date, we shall be publishing details of the organisations attending on Facebook and the Community Partnership website, www.henfieldcp. net. You can also find details of the event on the BN5 website, www.henfieldbn5.co.uk.
Bring friends, neighbours, family or come on your own. Whichever it is, you will receive a warm welcome. Let’s make this a day when the community comes together. This opportunity does not happen very often, the last similar event was held in 2018!

Henfield Festival of Gardens Arts
as successful as past years.
We welcome you, your family and friends to wander around the 31 gardens that will be open during the weekend and enjoy the 30 artists and 23 musicians that will be providing entertainment. The gardens vary in size, design and style so it is a great opportunity to come along and see what you could be doing in your own patch. Our artists and musicians are local to the area as well and provide an added reason to visit – be inspired or buy something to remind you of the day.
Many of the gardens are near to each other so it is easy to walk or cycle between them. Please be aware that car parking is difficult at some venues. Horsham District Council have suspended the central car park charges for the weekend so please do make use of them.
Our free blue booklet which will guide you on your way is in many of our local shops and businesses. It is also available with a downloadable map on our website at www.henfieldgardensandarts.net . The Festival is free but we hope you will make donations to the many charities that our gardeners collect for – some are local to the village and others are national – so do look out for the collecting pots. Last year the gardens donated just under £10,000 to charity. A fantastic achievement and we hope with your help to do the same this year.
Many gardens offer refreshments and our High Street shops and cafes will be pleased to see you as well. Refreshments range from a quick snack to delicious meals or cream teas so come hungry. Some venues will offer plants for sale too.
Alongside the Festival gardens some of the village larger venues such as the Henfield Hall, St Peter’s Church and The Haven are open offering activities to visit so do make sure you wander around the village and visit these locations.
On Sunday evening as the gardens close, Red Oaks in Cagefoot Lane are continuing to offer entertainment and refreshments from 5.30pman ideal opportunity to rest those tired feet and quench your thirst.
We would like to thank all our sponsors for their generous support with the funding of the Festival. We look forward to seeing you there – fingers crossed for some summery weather too.

Tax Planning for 2023/24
It is always a good idea to review tax planning opportunities to ensure allowances are maximised and your planning is in line with current legislation, particularly this year following wide-sweeping pension changes announced in the March Budget. This is a brief reminder of the key points to be addressed:
Pensions
• The annual allowance for tax relievable contributions, subject to earnings for personal contributions, has been increased to £60,000. The relief is available at your highest marginal rate of Income Tax.
• The adjusted income limit will increase from £240,000 to £260,000, where tapering begins to apply on a £2 for £1 basis. This reduces the annual allowance down to a minimum of £10,000, if your adjusted income totals £360,000 or more and your threshold income exceeds £200,000.
• The Lifetime Allowance limit of £1,073,100 continues to apply for the purpose of capping the 25% maximum tax-free lump sum i.e. a maximum £268,725 for this tax year and all future tax years. However where pension protection is held, the lump sum is generally 25% of the protected amount.
• The Lifetime Allowance charge has been suspended. Should pension savings be withdrawn from your pension fund in the tax year 2023/24 in the form of a lump sum in excess of £1,073,100, or, above your protected lifetime allowance should you have one, it will now only be subject to income tax at your marginal rate.
• Individuals holding a relevant pension protection will now be able to accrue new pension benefits, join new arrangements or transfer their benefits without losing their higher protected Lifetime Allowance and taxfree lump sum.
• The Money Purchase Annual Allowance is increased from £4,000 to £10,000, i.e. the amount you can reinvest in your pension, once you have started taking your pension in certain circumstances.
The Lifetime Allowance is to be abolished from Tax Year 2024/25 and we await full details which will be contained in a Finance Bill later this tax year. Any individual with a large pension pot should seek
expert advice on their options and the related tax implications.
Employer pension contributions are a tax efficient way of extracting profits for owner-managers and should be deductible for corporation tax purposes. This offers owner-managers a tax efficient deferred income.
Employers should consider offering their employees salary sacrifice arrangements for employer sponsored pension arrangements, which is provided at no extra cost to the employer (subject to possible admin fees).
• It may be possible to carry forward unused annual allowances from the three previous tax years if the current year’s allowance has been used up. If your income is over £100,000, a pension contribution may also help to reclaim any “lost” personal allowance, potentially resulting in effective tax relief of up to 60% on your contribution.
• Consider making a net contribution of up to £2,880 (£3,600 gross) for family members including those with no earnings e.g. children.
ISAs
• The ISA allowance remains unchanged at £20,000, which means a couple have a savings allowance of £40,000 this tax year.
• Any income or growth that is generated within the ISA is received tax free.
• You can save your full allowance into a stocks and shares ISA, a cash ISA, or combination of both.
• Up to £9,000 can be contributed to a Junior ISA or Child Trust Fund.
Dividend allowance
The amount of dividends you can receive without paying Income Tax has been reduced from £2,000 to £1,000 this tax year. It will reduce again to £500 next tax year, so this needs to be borne in mind if you have any control on any dividends you receive.
Income Tax
You can split income generating assets between couples to maximise the use of both individual’s personal allowances in retirement.
Capital Gains
• UK resident individuals are entitled to realise capital gains of up to £6,000 (2023/24) without having to pay any Capital Gains Tax (CGT).
60 | BN5 Magazine sales@bn5magazine.co.uk
• The ownership of any asset may be transferred to or shared with a spouse/civil partner without triggering a tax charge, so that each individual’s annual exemptions may be used for that disposal.
• The 2023/24 CGT rates are 10% for individuals who have not used their entire basic rate tax band against their income and 20% for higher or additional rate taxpayer.
• The CGT rate for transactions involving residential property (other than your principal residence), or carried interest, remain at 18% at the lower rate and 28% for the higher income tax rate.
• If you have an unused ISA allowance, it may be beneficial to use your CGT allowance to crystallise funds held in a non-tax-privileged investment account and reinvest it in an ISA.
EIS
& SEIS investment
Enterprise Investment Scheme and Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme investments are an option to be considered in your tax planning strategy – however they are very high risk investments and investment values and income from them may go down. You may not get back the original capital invested.
