from the BN5 area Local Artisan Market in Henfield Henfield High Street Party Sussex Prairies

Editor’s Letter

Summer is finally on its way and after the past (very quiet) year it’s so good to be talking about what Henfield does best - great events! Over the Garden Gate is the new Henfield Gardens and Arts - they’ve given local gardeners the chance to show off their green-fingered skills with some road-side displays. The Local Artisan Market is a first for Henfield - we’re excited about this lovely foodie market and we hope the organisers will bring it to the village every month. Please support this inaugural market and our local producers. Henfield Animal Safari is just the cutest thing; a whole bevvy of gorgeously inventive creatures, made by local artists and crafters, which will be hiding in gardens and windows throughout the village for children to find! A truly lovely idea which will charm local children and give them a fun activity for half-term. The Henfield High Street Party is happening on 27 June, restrictions permitting. This is organised by a group of local high street traders and will be great fun for the whole family! Lots of music, food, pubs and cafes open and lots of lovely activities for the children. We can’t wait. Who cares if Boris says we can’t travel? We’ve got so many great things to do in Henfield!

Marcus Grimes new offices

After successfully moving countless Henfield residents, Marcus Grimes Estate Agents and Lettings have found their own dream ‘home’! They’ve not moved far; just across the road into a bigger prime Henfield High Street location. The new office, which has been completely refurbished with two separate bespoke sales and lettings areas, is in the former Bet Fred shop next door to Truffles Bakery. Marcus and Fenella Grimes have lived in Henfield since 1989 and have enjoyed having an office in their home village since 2017 when they took over the former Goodsman Lettings. Unwanted Goods for the Haven

Following our news item in the May edition of BN5 Magazine, thank you so much for donating so many items for Sustainable Henfield to raise money for the Haven. We have sold lots of cameras, gadgets, furniture, tools, jewellery, etc. In the first two weeks we raised around £500 and diverted many items from landfill. Please keep donating by contacting Ruth Robotham 07729 483068. We do need volunteers to help to clean and mend donations and post them online. We plan to meet weekly at the Haven to have a drink and learn how to do this together. So, if you could spare a little time, Ruth would love to hear from you at ruthrobotham0@gmail.com

The Henfield Hall

At last, it looks as though we might be on track to return to normality. The Henfield Hall is now able to host some events and begin to allow clubs and societies to start activities as long as they follow the government’s guidelines. We look forward to welcoming you back.. Hall bookings are now building up so now is the time to confirm your bookings, if you haven’t already done so, and advise the Hall Steward when you wish to start your programme again. Whether you are a member of a club or society or attending the various classes such as keep fit and arts and crafts or coming along to a film show, presentation or Theatre Production it will be great to have you back. Keep an eye out for ‘What’s on’ in the future at the Hall in BN5 and make a note of the 27th June when, all things being well, there will be a Market in the car park and Henfield Hall will be having open day. We hope to see you then.

Lionel Barnard retires from WSCC

After 20 years in local politics, local councillor Lionel Barnard has retired from West Sussex County Council. His political career started in 2001 and he took responsibility for residents of Henfield, Cowfold, Partridge Green, West Grinstead (including Dial Post) and Shermanbury. Lionel covered 12 years in the cabinet in a variety of roles (serving under three leaders and as Deputy Leader under two) and was the County Council vice chairman and then County Council Chairman. He was also Chairman of the then Sussex Police Authority, appointing the chief constable, the deputy chief and various assistant chiefs. Lionel said: “I am honoured to have met various members of Royal Family, including HM The Queen, Princess Anne, many Dukes and also the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. “During my varied and interesting time at WSCC I have also worked closely with the Lord Lieutenants of East and West Sussex, current and past, plus innumerable High Sheriffs and many Deputy Lieutenants. In addition I met Lady Thatcher before I was a Councillor and knew all the local MP’s and many from further afield. I shall miss going to County Hall and seeing all my colleagues there. Microsoft Teams has made a difference during lock-down but there is nothing like seeing and talking to people. I have enjoyed my time as Councillor.” We would like to thank Lionel for all his work in supporting Henfield over the years, including his invaluable help in supporting the creation of the Henfield Haven.

Geoff Jewson 1936 – 2021

Geoff Jewson came to Henfield, with his wife Jo and two small boys, in 1969 when he took up the post of Head of Modern Languages at Steyning Grammar School. Generations of Henfield area children and parents will remember him as a committed and caring teacher who supported and guided every one of his students with enthusiasm, patience and kindness. Geoff stayed at Steyning until his retirement and served also as Head of Exams and Head of Sixth Form. When he joined Steyning it had only recently become a comprehensive school and Geoff was one of a group of new, young teachers committed to the idea of comprehensive education. He was a firm believer in equal opportunities for all in education, an ideal he maintained throughout his career. He was also a dedicated member of what must be one of the smallest branches of the Labour Party in the country. Geoff was an active member of Henfield Birdwatch and the BP Guild where he could always be found at the heart of their charitable endeavours. On retirement he became a volunteer at Woods Mill and with the Self-Help Group where he took responsibility for the mini-bus, first as driver, then shotgun and finally administering its use and upkeep. Geoff was a modest and unassuming man who lived a life dedicated to his family and the service of others. You will find a full obituary in the June edition of the Parish Magazine. In the words of so many of the cards and tributes that Jo has received, Geoff really was a true gentleman.

Family Nature Trail

In lockdown, many people rediscovered country walks, birdsong, and the joy of seeing birds, butterflies and bees in the garden. Nature needs help to recover and we hope Sustainable Henfield 2030’s family nature trail (aimed at families with children over 7) will encourage young people and their families to find out more about what we have here in the village. The Trail in Henfield has a pictorial map of some of the best things you might see within a few minutes’ walk of the High Street during May and June. There will be notes, with links to find out more, on an accompanying document. Download the map and notes and take your children, or anyone else, out for an hour following the Peter’s trees for Henfield Haven Many thanks to Peter Stanislas for two lovely new recommended route. Henfield firefighter wins prestigious photography award

Local Henfield Firefighter Hugo Healy entered the British Photography Awards (BPA) for the first time in 2020 and he came runner up in his category (drone). That was a huge surprise for a first entry in such a prestigious competition. However, having entered again in 2021 I am delighted to inform you that he won ‘The People’s Choice Award’ in the drone category with the image ‘Coastal Peaks’. Hugo said about his image: “I captured these dramatic views from the Southern Coast of Iceland during my best road trip to date… I was captivated by the juxtaposition of the road against the landscape and I knew that I had to return at sunrise to capture it in the perfect light. Having arrived at 3am, in the dark, the daylight slowly emerged until it flooded the scene with golden rays, striking the mountain peaks, creating dramatic contrast.” The BPA raises an inordinate amount for charity (it doesn’t pay prize money to the winners but each candidate submits their chosen charity). More of Hugo’s work can be seen at @HugoHealy or www.hugohealy.com

Steyning and District u3a - Enjoying life after work

Ask many people what retirement is all about and they might say more time to travel, enjoy hobbies and spend time with family. But when it actually happens and you walk away from work for the last time, it can almost feel like a loss. Loss of identity, the company of colleagues and, perhaps most impactful of all, the loss of structure in your day to day life. Whilst that lack of routine can be liberating, it can also be very unsettling, especially in the early days. The effects of climate change are becoming more and more noticeable each year. 2021 needs to be an important turning point, finding ways to reduce our carbon emissions, while still ensuring we can enjoy a good life. Here in Henfield, there is a lot of interest in this topic, and SH2030 would like to help us be a more effective community in making necessary changes. To assist us all, SH2030 are currently working with a small group of undergraduate students from University of Brighton who are developing an online questionnaire for our village, which was posted in May. The aim of the student survey is to help the people of Henfield understand the efforts in place to reduce carbon emissions, and to gather opinions on what else could be done. Results will be shared with the community and Parish Council, so we can plan together to do our bit locally to reverse climate breakdown and protect future generations.

The Big Dog Walk at Borde Hill

Rushfields win Sussex Food Shop of the Year 2021!

Congratulations to the team at Rushfields Farm Shop, who have won the prestigious Food Shop of the Year at the Sussex Food and Drink Awards! They were Grand Finalists back in 2019 and are thrilled to achieve the top prize after such a difficult year in 2021. Pam and Colin Langridge, pictured here, said: “We are so pleased, especially for our hardworking team. It’s been a challenging year so the award is coming at just the right time for us all!” Hilary Knight, director Sussex Food & Drink Network said: “Quite simply, every visit to Rushfields Farm Shop is a delight. From the friendly and helpful staff, the flow of the shop through different ‘departments’ and the sheer range and quality on offer, shopping here is never a chore but always a joyful experience.” Rushfields responded to the pandemic with incredible community spirit. While the Garden Centre closed (voluntarily during the 3rd lockdown) to keep staff and customers safe, the Farm Shop team not only set up a box delivery scheme which became a lifeline for local people who were shielding, but also increased their product range. The award-winning homemade pies were a particular success. Well done Rushfields!

It’s a unique opportunity for dog owners and their families to walk together around the beautiful rolling Borde Hill Parkland of 100 acres, adjacent to Borde Hill Garden. Dogs and their owners can choose from either a 2k, 5k or 10k route and walk times have been staggered this year for the comfort and safety of all taking part. The walk aims to bring together dog lovers and dogs and encourage socialisation and exercise. The walk will be the best walk ever for dogs and their families with fun games, surprises around the route. Back at the Event Village there will be plenty of have-a-go activities for dogs such as a Dogstacle course for you and your dog to take on, shopping, expert advice, fun dog show, doggy splash park, and plenty of refreshments.

We are delighted this year to have the Dogs Trust on board as our Official Charity Partner. Participants can also raise more money for any charity of their choice upon signing up. Prices are £10.50 per adult and children 5-16 years are free of charge. For more information and to Book tickets visit www.bigdogwalk.co.uk .

27 JUNE 2021 10AM - 2PM HENFIELD HIGH STREET

We’ve missed seeing friends, family, neighbours and our wider community during the past year. We’ve missed pubs, restaurants, shopping, a decent haircut and the nicer things in life! If the ‘road-map’ and vaccination process continues to go well (thanks to our brilliant NHS and teams at Henfield Medical Centre) so it looks as if, by the end of June, we may able to have some fun! Why not come along to Henfield High Street on Sunday 27th June between 10am-2pm to celebrate? Bring the kids, meet the grandparents and some friends, enjoy a cold pint in one of the pubs and listen to some music. You’ll find street-food vendors like the little Indian food tuk-tuk from Sakala in Steyning, shops open and welcoming old and new customers and a cracking barbie provided by the guys at South Downs Butchery in the Post House Café garden. You’ll find local folk duo Will & Wolfie playing under a gazebo outside the Henfield Club and their great bar stocking lots of local beers will be open to all. While at Stokes, the garden will host a Children’s Talent Contest. Local pubs will all be open with The George hosting a seafood

barbeque. Cafés will be serving delicious food cakes and takeaway coffee & lunches. The High Street will be decked with summertime bunting and beautiful coordinated floral displays – big, bright, bold and beautiful! If you venture round to the Henfield Hall Garden you’ll find Nick and his Circus Tricks with lots of fun entertainment for the children while the grown-ups enjoy a drink at the bar. You’ll also find Helena Hunt with her beautiful flowers and children can make some floral crowns to celebrate the summertime at her workshop. There will be a candy-floss stall at Marcus Grimes and if you walk down Cagefoot Lane you’ll hear the ensemble music of Brass Fusion playing in the grounds of Red Oaks Care home – pop in to see them, there will be lots of fun things to do, and lots cake. Worthing steel band will be performing in the High Street to help bring out the Henfield sunshine! As we go to print, plans are still taking shape and we know things may change a little, but please do hold the date and look out for more information. A huge thank you to Stevens Estate Agents, Perry Plumbers & Perry Electrics and Richwards

Estate Agents for sponsoring the music and children’s activities. This event is a collective of many High Street businesses working together. Thank you especially to Alison Egan from Relish for organising the entertainment and Oliver Borrow from Post House Café and the Henfield Traders for their participation and support. Given previous experiences we have to say it… All the above fun is subject to Boris’s announcements in June. Please keep safe and keep your distance; remember that even though this event is mainly outdoors, some may feel more vulnerable than others. Please follow the Henfield High Street Party Facebook page, updates will be posted there.

S

ummer is finally here and what better than kicking back in your garden and enjoying the fruits of your labours? Well, perhaps kicking back in someone else’s garden and enjoying the fruits of their labours! And that’s exactly what you can do at the beautiful Sussex Prairie Gardens which open to the public again this month. Pauline and Paul McBride and their team will be welcoming folk for spontaneous visits throughout the summer and autumn without the need to book! This will allow everyone to enjoy the weather when they can, meeting up with friends and family in a safe and welcoming environment. Well behaved dogs on leads are also very welcome! If you have never visited Sussex Prairie Garden before, then you are in for a real visual and sensory treat! The eight acre gardens (which have been featured on Gardener’s World, BBC2’s Your Garden Made Perfect and in The Saturday Times Magazine), are surrounded by mature oak trees and consist of a series of interlocking arcs of large planted borders in a naturalistic style. The borders encourage exploration and adventure, and visitors are welcome to roam in amongst the plants to further enjoy the experience. The plantings consist of large groupings of each variety, planted in a free flowing style, which

01273 01273 494002 494002

contrasts leaf forms, stems, stalks, flower shapes and textures. Colours are soft and muted, and complement the natural landscape. If, after exploring the spectacular gardens you are in need of refreshment, head over to the teashop which will be serving takeaway teas, coffee, homemade cakes and ice cream to be enjoyed throughout the garden. Visitors are also very welcome to bring their own picnics to enjoy in the garden and surrounding farm fields. Alongside the delights of the garden, there are lots of big summer fairs planned (for which booking is essential - with the exception of the Indian Summer Bazaar) including Summer Plants, Handmade Crafts, Unusual Plants & Gardens, Beautiful & Useful, as well as the wondrous Indian Summer Bazaar. There is also a packed programme of outdoor entertainment including the Rude Mechanical Theatre Company, Taylor Maid band and a movie blockbuster sing-along. And if you are keen to indulge your creative passions, then there are a range of inspirational workshops taught throughout the summer months – for more information on these and all other events see www.sussexprairies.co.uk

If you go down to the village today…

T

he Henfield Animal Safari is here, with all manner of creatures, real and imaginary, waiting to be found in gardens and windows all around the village! This fun Safari Trail for children is set up in three gentle (little-leg friendly) loops, so you can keep children entertained spotting the beautifully crafted creatures in windows and gardens, high street shops and on safe routes where there aren’t too many roads to cross. Each trail will include an easy quiz for you to complete while you search for the animals. You can download the maps from www. henfieldcp.net or by visiting the Henfield Animal Safari Facebook page, or collect a form from Christina’s Afternoon Tea Shop in Henfield High Street. brought together lots of local groups and individuals over the last three months. They’ve all been busy crafting, knitting, painting, crocheting, felting, stitching and papier-maché-ing to make these wild and wonderful creatures. They’re absolutely delightful and will certainly bring a smile to your face! There are more than 100 creatures, some you’ll recognise and some are wonderfully inventive. A huge thank you to the crafters from the Ladybirds, Upper Mead and Red Oaks care homes, the Henfield Shedders and the host of individuals who have participated with such enthusiasm. We would also like to give a special thank you to the Ladybirds for setting up some of the High Street displays. Let us know which is your favourite! quiz form and the creature will be ‘won’ by the highest bidder) with all money raised going to the Henfield Haven and MacMillan Cancer Support. After the event finishes on 20 June, some brave and intrepid Community Partnership members will be venturing into the village clutching binoculars and butterfly nets, ready to capture the creatures. On Saturday 26th, a family friendly morning is planned in the Free Church Hall hosted by the Free Church and Ladybirds. The animals will be on display for children to see and those not already sold will be available to buy. Organisers Sue Willis from Henfield Community Partnership and Tamsin Gibbs from St Peter’s PTA have been encouraged by the enthusiasm for the project from local crafters. Sue said: “It’s been lovely to see the community support, it’s been a shared lockdown project and we’ve been thrilled

to see how local crafters have taken the idea and allowed their imaginations to run wild!” Children will be invited to colour in an Elmer the Elephant (sheets supplied by Henfield Library) and these will also be on display in the Free Church Hall. Completed Quiz and Colouring Sheets should be returned to Christina’s Afternoon Tea Shop in Henfield High Street please, by 20th June, children who complete the quiz and Safari will receive a small treat. This event is organised by Henfield Community Partnership and is Covid-safe with all creatures visible from the pavements. Please keep your distance and stay safe, especially when crossing roads.

here is a society based in Henfield which has 150 members with ages ranging from 8 to 90, carrying out activities including make-up, wall painting, carpentry, computing, electronics, sound engineering, needle work, dancing and singing. They also hold social events like treasure hunts and barbecues. Do you know what it is yet? Of course you do! The public face of Henfield Theatre Company (HTC) is usually what shows when the curtains open in The Henfield Hall and the audience is treated to a couple of hours of great entertainment. As we take stock of 15 months or so of artistic deprivation and many other horrors, there is perhaps an opportunity to look behind the scenes as we prepare, once again, to bring up the lights and let the show begin. In normal times, HTC puts on four productions a year with an extra, outdoor play, usually Shakespeare, every other summer. It’s a busy schedule and it requires a formalised committee structure to run it effectively. In addition to the actors and those directing them, each play or musical show needs, amongst other things, costumes, props, lighting, sound and a set. A Production Manager is appointed who

38 | BN5 Magazine

oversees the whole operation to make sure that everything is in place from auditions and publicity right through to the front-of-house and back stage teams who step in when the production is running. Members of the society often get involved in several of these areas or, sometimes, they like to specialise in one of them. In any event, each production involves a lot of people and the activity tends to build up to a peak as the first night approaches. The set builders and painters have fun over half a dozen or so Sunday mornings when there is always quite a buzz in The Henfield Hall stage area. However the work is going, it stops half way through the morning for tea or coffee and a piece of cake! The props team, meanwhile, is also busy improvising items of hardware from surprising sources. And it’s all about to start again; HTC’s next production is The Government Inspector, a comedy by Nikolai Gogol (14 to 16 October 2021). For more information, to book tickets or to join HTC see henfieldtheatrecompany.com

Henfield resident Richard Bates, consultant solicitor at Cognitive Law in Brighton, comments on gifts and mental capacity. I regularly help families reduce their inheritance tax bills. Many do this by making gifts and surviving 7 years, after which the gift can be ignored (as long as they haven’t ‘reserved a benefit’). However, one can give £3,000 per year (not per beneficiary) using the annual exemption, so the 7-year rule need not apply. Indeed, many clients do this regularly. This does pose a problem though if the person has lost capacity. Often, attorneys start or simply continue the pattern of giving thinking they are helping. However, they are not aware that, potentially, they are acting unlawfully. The main rule is that the person concerned should decide whether to make a gift – if they have mental capacity, i.e. where they are able to make an informed decision themselves. If they can’t make that decision, an attorney is typically only lawfully allowed to make a gift if it’s either (a) to a family member, friend or acquaintance of the person on a ‘customary occasion’ or (b) to a charity. In both cases, it’s essential the gift is of reasonable value given the size of the person’s estate. If you make a gift on the person’s behalf that isn’t of reasonable value, you could be breaking the law. Whilst one might argue that, if they have an inheritance tax problem in the first place, they have more than enough assets to make the gift, this isn’t necessarily true. More often than not, a person’s estate is predominantly taken up with the value of their house, so gifts can severely impact their cash flow and standard of living. I have also seen countless examples of £3,000 being given away when the person doesn’t have an inheritance tax problem. Finally, one is not allowed to make gifts to avoid contributing to care costs. This is called a ‘deliberate deprivation of assets’ and can mean that local authority assistance with care fees, and even state assistance with benefits, is withdrawn and overpayments reclaimed. To find out more, please get in touch on 07866 547366 or richard.bates@cognitivelaw.co.uk. You can also find out more at www.cognitivelaw.co.uk. JUNE 2021 | Local interest

12-13 June

H

enfield gardeners have once again stepped up to make our Garden Festival on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 June (11am-5pm) a visual treat. We are thrilled and proud to announce that there are 43 front gardens participating in this year’s Festival – a free event that we are determined to run in some form! This year we are delighted to welcome new gardens as well as our regulars, all concentrating on their front garden spaces with some adding wheelbarrows and quirky pots for interest. It promises to be to be a great weekend and we have our fingers crossed for good weather. The walkable trails will appeal to all and as well as seeing our registered gardens there will be plenty of other gardens to see. If you are new to the event, it’s a chance to see many of our historical sites too and explore the many twittens that wind their way through our village. Many of the paths also allow cycling so it is an opportunity to leave the car at home. If this is not enough, there’s also an ‘Animal Safari trail’ around the village which will give everyone the opportunity to spot some ‘beasties’ hiding in amongst the plants. The High Street and a few gardens will be selling refreshments within the current Covid safe guidelines. Gallery BN5 will be hosting the work of local artists and is also acting as our Information Point where a limited number of printed maps will be available. There are public toilets in the High Street as well two large car parks. We recommend that you visit www.henfieldgardenandarts.net to get the

01273 494002

latest news and to print a map showing the 43 gardens that are taking part. Unlike previous years, this year we have not produced the ‘blue booklet’ with details of all the participants. Instead, we intend to keep updating our website with the details that gardeners have provided us as well the link to the double-sided printable map (there will be a limited number of paper copies of the map available on the High Street from May). If you have not visited us before you will note that gardeners taking part display the blue number that corresponds with the number allocated to their garden on the map to help you find them. The front gardens had photographs taken in April and these may also be helpful to recognise them too. In previous years we have included participating musicians and artists and it’s possible that some garden owners who are also artists or musicians may take the opportunity to demonstrate their work in their front gardens. They will of course be mindful of the restrictions due to Covid-19 and will request that you follow the latest government guidelines to minimise any risk to yourselves and others. We are sure you will thoroughly enjoy a stroll or cycle around the gardens and appreciate the continuing creativity of our Henfield gardeners in the gardens of Henfield, so please invite your family and friends to come over too. Who knows, you may be inspired to join in our Festival next year? We so much look forward to welcoming you to our 2021 Garden Festival.

Tax Efficient Planning for 2021/22 It is always a good idea to review tax planning opportunities to ensure you are maximising allowances and your planning is in line with current legislation. Here’s a brief reminder of the key points that should be addressed:

Make the most of Inheritance Tax (IHT) allowances •

You can gift up to £3,000 capital each Tax Year free of IHT, or £6,000 if there was no gift in the previous Tax Year. Any of the previous year’s unused allowance can be carried forward.

•

Upon their children’s marriage, parents can gift £5,000 (grandparents £2,500).

•

You can make unlimited gifts up to a value of £250 each per person per Tax Year.

•

Gifts as part of your normal expenditure are exempt from an IHT charge. A pattern of making these payments should be established and documented.

•

The tax-exempt nil-rate band is frozen at £325,000.

•

Homeowners may benefit from the £150,000 residence nil-rate band (RNRB). This is in addition to the standard nil-rate band. The qualification is that your home must be passed down to your direct descendants, i.e. children or grandchildren.

ISAs •

The ISA allowance is £20,000.

•

Any income or growth that is generated within the ISA is tax free.

•

You can save your full allowance in a stocks and shares ISA or cash ISA, or a combination of both.

•

The limit for a junior ISA for 2021/22 is £9,000.

Dividend allowance •

The tax-free dividend allowance is £2,000.

Pensions •

The annual allowance for tax relievable pension contributions is up to £40,000, depending on your income.

•

Tax relief on personal contributions is available at your highest marginal rate of tax.

•

• Carry forward allows you to make use of any unused pension allowance from the three previous Tax Years, if the current year’s allowance has been used up.

•

If your income is over £100,000, a pension contribution may also help to reclaim any ‘lost’ personal allowance, potentially resulting in effective tax relief of up to 60% on your contribution.

•

Consider making a net contribution of up to £2,880 (£3,600 gross) for family members, including those with no earnings, e.g. children.

•

• Employer pension contributions are a taxefficient way of extracting profits for ownermanagers and should be deductible for Corporation Tax purposes. This offers owner- • managers a tax-efficient deferred income.

Watch out •

•

Those with an adjusted income of over £150,000 will have their annual pension allowance restricted on a sliding scale from £40,000 down to a minimum of £10,000.

Will •

There is a tapered withdrawal of the additional nil-rate band for estates with a net value of more than £2 million. This is at a withdrawal rate of £1 for every £2 over this threshold. This is beneficial to married and civil partnership couples, as their IHT relief is doubled. RNRB can be transferred to the deceased’s spouse or civil partner’s estate. On first death, the unused RNRB is capped at the value of the home. This can even be done if the first of the couple died before 6 April 2017. If you leave at least 10% of your net estate to charity, your estate could pay the reduced rate of 36% on assets above £325,000. You can also mitigate any potential IHT liabilities by implementing simple assurance policies written under suitable trusts. Review your Will to ensure that your current wishes are reflected and that you are maximising the IHT relief available.

Capital Gains •

UK-resident individuals are entitled to realise capital gains of up to £12,000 (2021/22) without having to pay any Capital Gains Tax (CGT).

•

The ownership of any asset may be transferred to, or shared with a spouse/civil partner without triggering a tax charge, so that each individual’s annual exemptions may be used for that disposal.

•

The 2021/22 CGT rates are 10% for individuals who have not used their entire basic-rate tax band against their income and 20% for higher or additional-rate taxpayer.

•

The CGT rate for transactions involving residential property (other than your principal residence), or carried interest, remains at 18% at the lower rate and 28% for the higher income tax rate.
