Care for Carers
Editor’s Letter
Care for our Carers in Henfield Please join us over the coming months as we show our gratitude to all the brilliant carers in our village, those who are working in local care homes and sheltered accommodation, as well as all the visiting carers looking after people in their own homes. We also want to show those vulnerable residents who are being cared for that they are not forgotten, many will be missing visits from family and friends and their period of isolation may be a lot longer than ours. Please turn to page 18 to see how you can help in simple ways - by donating small toiletries for gift packages if you can, or by encouraging your children to write letters or decorate a plant pot. This initiative is being organised by Henfield Community Partnership and supported by us, The Henfield Haven, Helpline, Churches and many other village organisations - please do get involved with your own ideas. BN5 is getting a little ‘leaner’ in page count as this virus continues and we have less businesses able to advertise, but we hope that you’ll still find plenty of interesting articles to read in these pages. Please bear with us and do your best to support local businesses and our high street when we start to head out of this pandemic, they will need you more than ever.

Important news for residents selfisolating residents
The way in which isolating patients receive their medications has recently changed. They now need to call the NHS GoodSam line on 0808 196 33 82, where their details will be taken and they will be allocated an NHS volunteer who will collect their prescription when it is ready and deliver it to them. More information for those in isolation as well as those wanting to volunteer can be found at www. volunteering.royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk/nhsvolunteer-responders-portal
Lockdown seal spotting
Sue Spiers of Henfield Joggers was out running along the River Adur between Henfield and Partridge Green at the beginning of lockdown when she saw a seal popping its head out of the water! “I was taking my daily jog with my dog Bailey when I see this little face looking out the water at us. I thought I was seeing things but Bailey had spotted it too and ran down to the river’s edge. I snapped a photo and went down to get a closer look but it disappeared under the water. We waited and there it was again, clear as day swimming up and down! I have been jogging and walking along this stretch of river for over 10 years now and have never seen anything like this before.” Seal expert Stephen Savage has been regularly studying Sussex seals since 1997 and says that whilst it’s not unusual for individual seals to travel several miles up the River Adur with the tide, they usually go no further than the Cement Works at Upper Beeding. If anyone else is lucky enough to spot a seal on the River Adur (or any other tidal river in Sussex) please email seawatch17@ yahoo.co.uk stating the dates, time and location of the sighting, together with the state of the tide (if relevant), what the seal was doing (e.g. feeding, swimming up or down river, on the river bank etc), and any photos if possible.

Back of the net – hand creams for local heroes
Back in April the 23 players from Henfield U8s were set a goal scoring challenge to raise money to buy hand cream for carers and key workers in the village and beyond. The challenge was to score 100 great goals (at home) in a week, finishing on the 100th birthday of Colonel Tom Moore. Team manager Tom Wilson says: “The boys are really missing their weekly training sessions and matches, so we have been setting a few challenges to help them kick their way through coronavirus and stay active. We thought it would be great if this latest challenge helped support others too.” The seven and eight-year-old asked family and friends to wanted to raise enough money to create their own rainbow of hand creams to donate to teams at St Barnabas Hospice, St Catherine’s Hospice (whose logo the team wear on their shirts and who they have been fundraising for over the past year), as well as for staff at local care homes and shops, including Budgens, who is the team’s sponsor. By 30 April they had scored a smashing 2,000 goals and raised an incredible £2,257 - an amazing achievement! There’s still time to donate here: www.justgiving. com/crow…/henfieldfc-u8s-kickingforkeyworkers

Horton Golf Club was broken into again on the evening of 25 April and equipment valued at several thousand pounds was stolen. CCTV footage shows suspicious activity of individuals around the golf club car park and huts around 9pm and then a white transit van was seen entering the main entry gate at 11.27pm. The white Transit van was then seen leaving the industrial estate at 12.11am and turning left towards Small Dole. Unfortunately the camera footage was unable to identify any number plates or faces as both were obscured. The ground work equipment stolen included a Kabuto sit-on mower, two Hayter 41 mowers, a seed spreader, various tool sets and a chainsaw. This is the ninth time the club has been broken into and it’s a devastating blow for the members of this small not for profit cooperative golf club. If you are offered any of these items for sale please report, and if you saw any unusual activity please call Sussex Police on 101 quoting SXP20200426408 and crime number 47200069370.

Henfield Helpline feedback
The Henfield Helpline has quickly established itself as a lifeline for those who have been selfisolating during the Covid-19 pandemic, helping over 500 local people, many several times over. Messages have come through from grateful users, here’s just one of them: “This is not an appeal for help, but just a quick thank you from a couple of golden oldies who pride themselves on being self-sufficient but have had to ask for assistance from the Henfield Helpline in the past few weeks. So thank you to the volunteer who contacted us in the first place, to Belinda who has been calm, efficient and so helpful on the phone, and finally to the three gentlemen who have cheerfully delivered our prescriptions to us.” Thank you to all the Helpline volunteers.

But we need your help. We are asking local people to join the St Barnabas House Lottery. The regular income our Lottery provides allows us to plan and budget for the difficult times now and ahead. It costs just £1 a week and by joining the Lottery, you could make a huge difference to very deserving local people exactly when they need it most. Everyone who plays our Lottery stands a chance of winning our top prize of £1,000 every week. Margaret, from Worthing, recently told us how happy she was to win a prize of £100. “I’m putting the money towards giving a boost to my grandson’s pocket money, and I’ve got a good idea that he’s going to spend the money on buying a very big jigsaw puzzle. He loves jigsaws. What I would really like to do is give this wonderful cause a big donation. But I’m retired and elderly and haven’t got the money. This lottery gives me the chance to give a little bit of money each week, which I can easily afford.”
We are all under a lot of pressure right now – but lottery donations could help St Barnabas House do so much for so many people in the weeks and months ahead. To start playing our Lottery right away – visit www.stbarnabaslottery.org.uk today. James Sherrin, Henfield Building Solutions (Players must be 16 years old or over. hat’s your experience of growing plants during lockdown? Planting more seeds than you have ever done before? Involving the off-school children? Planted free seeds from Sussex Prairie Gardens? Not able to get all the compost you’re used to and learning to make-do with used compost and garden soil? Whether growing plants for the first time or a seasoned gardener with lots of experience and lots to show others, let us see some photos of your successes and failures! Sustainable Henfield 2030 has linked up with BN5 Magazine and the Henfield Community Partnership to encourage you to show us what you are achieving in the garden or on your window sill. Whether it be the best flower display ever, the tallest sunflower or the wonkiest carrot, we want to see them. Pauline from Sussex Prairies has sent out hundreds of packets of free heritage seeds since the feature was published in May BN5 magazine and she still has a few to give away, if you send her a stamped addressed envelope to Seeds of Hope Offer, Sussex Prairies, Morlands Farm, Wheatsheaf Road, Nr Henfield, West Sussex, BN5 9AT. This got us thinking about how exciting it is to grow new things, and making the most of what we have in lockdown: Sustainable Living at its best. And with no-one visiting your home at the moment, let’s show off what we are doing - email your efforts to editor@bn5magazine.co.uk and we will feature galleries of your images on the BN5,
01273 494002
SH2030 and Henfield Community Partnership Facebook pages so people can ‘like’ their favourites. Send us photos of your attempts at sowing new seeds, your cherished seedlings and, as they grow, send us a sneak preview of what they might develop into. Get inventive in what you grow them in. Try growing without using any pesticides or herbicides – it’s the best way. And eventually send us pictures of the plants growing in your gardens or the veg before you harvest it. There are no rules - it’s just a chance to share your photos and see what others are doing! Paul and Pauline from Sussex Prairie Garden have very kindly offered three family season tickets to the Prairie Garden as prizes for the most popular and these images will also feature in the pages of BN5 Magazine later in the summer with a ‘Virtual Village Show’. All you have to do is email us photos and text of what you are growing in your garden and any useful details, such as did you grow it from the free seeds from Sussex Prairie Garden? Have the flowers attracted pollinators? Did you start with a small plant from a garden centre? How long have you been gardening? What is different about gardening in lockdown? Share the fun and the disasters and your tips for better gardening. Happy sustainable gardening!

#SharedHearts
T
he wonderful crafted hearts featured on our front cover this month were made by members of the Henfield Ladybirds (a group famous for their brilliantly creative yarn-bombing of the village in recent years for the Garden & Arts Festival!), as part of a project to support the loved ones of patients dying from Coronavirus. In most cases, patients suffering from Coronavirus are unable to receive visitors due the strict isolation rules. This is obviously extremely distressing for all those involved, particularly close family relatives. The idea of #SharedHearts is that patients dying from Coronavirus are given a crafted heart. After the patient has died, their closest relative is then sent the matching heart, together with a personalised message in a card from a nurse. This initiative in Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals was started by ICU Critical Care Nurse Claire Cox, the daughter of local residents Maureen and Dave Fletcher (former Children’s Nurse and Paramedic respectively). Claire got the idea from another hospital and decided to see if there was any interest locally: “I put a call out on my Facebook page for crafters in the community to make hearts – they could be knitted, quilted, sewn, crocheted or felted, just as long as they were 6-7cm in size. Within 12 hours I already had the first bag of handmade hearts delivered to me – I hadn’t even got permission from the hospital at this stage!”
01273 494002
With beautifully crafted hearts flooding in, Claire then worked with Palliative Care Lead Steve Bass and Patient Experience Manager Jane Carmody to make the idea into action. A colleague designed a card and using money donated to the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Charity, Claire had the cards printed and brought baskets for the hearts. The hearts are delivered to Claire and left outside in quarantine for 72 hours before being transferred to the hospital. The whole project came to life within a matter of days. Maureen and her fellow Henfield Ladybird members are just some of the many people from across Sussex who have donated their time, materials and love in making these beautiful hearts to help bereaved families. Claire said: “One lady in her 80’s said that she felt helpless during the pandemic until she started making hearts for the campaign. She now feels that she has a purpose and can support others.” She went on: “Deaths are not statistics, they are our mothers, father, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. Every life matters and as a community we care.”
Sarah Butler
The Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals currently have enough crafted hearts, we will keep you informed if there is an opportunity to get involved with the project in future. BN5 Magazine | 17

T
he past few months under lockdown have been difficult for everyone, not least for Henfield’s isolated and vulnerable residents and the professional carers who have been looking after them in care homes, sheltered accommodation and in their own homes, often under extremely challenging conditions. That’s why the Henfield Community Partnership, supported by BN5 Magazine, Henfield Churches, The Henfield Helpline, Henfield Haven, Henfield Hub and various clubs and groups have launched an initiative to show how much we all support and care for them. The concept of “Care for Carers” is twofold – firstly, to show our appreciation, in small but significant ways, for the difficult and challenging work that carers have been carrying out in looking after the most vulnerable residents in our village. It’s also to acknowledge these vulnerable residents themselves who have found themselves very isolated from village life over the past few months and have been missing visits from their friends and families. This is truly a partnership project and we would like to encourage everyone to be part of it. Some groups are already ahead of the game, like the amazing Henfield Football Club U8’s who raised an incredible £2,257 last month (and scored a smashing 2,000 goals!) to buy hand creams for carers and key workers in the village and beyond. We are starting with some small projects (see below) that everyone can join in with, but if you have additional ideas of how you, your family or your club or society can contribute over the next few weeks and months, please contact Paul Crowe at the Henfield Community Partnership, project coordinators, by emailing henfieldhcp. info@gmail.com. We will be publishing all your ideas and successes in future editions of BN5 and you’ll find details in the Parish Magazine, Henfield Hub and all the local social media sites. The Henfield Helpline, based at the Henfield Haven, will act as the collection point for all donations and deliveries while the Helpline volunteers will be helping to distribute the gifts, letters and plants. 18 | BN5 Magazine
For our Carers
We plan to create small thank-you gifts for carers in the form of little luxury packages. We are looking for donations of new (unused and in-date) hand creams, small soaps and shower gels, nail products and other ‘treat’ items, as well as little chocolates, scented candles and small useful gifts. Maybe you have a present ‘stash’ you could raid, or perhaps you could add a couple of items onto your weekly shop? We appreciate these are difficult times for many families in the village, but even if you can only give a little it will be very much appreciated. Please drop your donations off at the Henfield Haven Café (where the Helpline operates) between 10am-4pm on weekdays, where you will be given the opportunity to fill out a goodwill message tag with a personal message of support. These items will then be beautifully wrapped in cellophane and ribbon with a personal message tag attached and delivered safely to the care homes, carers and those working on the front line, those who deserve a little ‘thank you’ and to know that their hard work is appreciated. www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

For our vulnerable residents
Write a letter Children can write a cheerful letter or a card for an elderly resident. These will be forwarded to our local Care Homes, please add a name and address if you would like a reply, some of the residents are great letter-writers and would love to respond! Here’s some ideas of what children can write: Write about where you live, what you’ve been doing in lockdown, your family and pets if you have them. Perhaps ask them where they went to school and if they had a best friend, ask them to tell you a story about their school days. Tell them the type of music you listen to, or if you like to dance or play a sport, or if you did something special for VE Day 75. You could tell them about your hobbies, if you like playing computer games or ride your bike. What are you missing, your clubs or groups, your school friends? These are just a few ideas. Draw a picture Our Care Homes and elderly residents living on their own would love a bright picture by one of our younger artists to cheer up their rooms, could you paint one? Use your imagination, you can draw your pets, or your family, or you can draw a unicorn, a multicoloured friendly monster or even a rainbow! The brighter and more colourful the better. You can use paint, coloured pencils, felttips or collage – whatever you want. A picture will certainly bring a smile to someone’s face! Decorate a pot for a windowsill plant You can collect an empty plant pot or two from the Henfield Haven (perhaps pop in when you’re on your daily exercise) and decorate it! Children and adults can join in with this activity. Use whatever materials you wish; paints, stickers,
01273 494002
sequins and ribbons, glitter and transfers. Please deliver it back to the Henfield Haven where the Ground force Team will pot a plant into it ready to brighten someone’s day. Very importantly, please fill in a message tag and put a name on it, too. Many thanks to Rushfields for donating plant pots and helping with supplies of bedding plants. Donations for gifts, completed letters, cards, pictures and decorated plant pots should be taken to the Henfield Haven and they will be distributed safely by Helpline volunteers. We have at least 150 residents living in local care homes and sheltered accommodation, with even more being cared for in their own homes by local care providers. There are around the same number of professional carers working in Henfield, too, wouldn’t it be nice to make sure each one knew just how appreciated they are? Thank you for showing you care.

These are so good and definitely more of a ‘grown-up’ cookie! 125g butter 125g caster sugar 123 soft light brown sugar 1 tsp vanilla paste 1 egg 1 tablespoon milk 220g self-raising flour 150 g dark chocolate chips ½ teaspoon sea salt Cream together the butter, caster and soft brown sugar. Add in the vanilla paste, egg and milk and mix again. Add the self-raising flour and fold in, followed by the chocolate and sea salt. Once all the ingredients are combined, roll into balls weighing 70g each (there should be 6 balls). Place evenly spaced on a lined and greased baking tray. Cook at 180c for 12 to 15 mins. Eat warm! Henfield resident Richard Bates, consultant solicitor at Cognitive Law in Brighton, comments on tips for surviving lockdown. A few days ago, I read an article about keeping a positive mental attitude during lockdown by psychologist, Professor Cary Cooper of Manchester University. Whilst it is entirely relevant during the current restrictions, it also seems to remain relevant for when life gets back to normal. His 7 tips are:1.
Follow a routine, any routine, and keep to it. But make sure everyone around you knows what your routine is, to create healthy boundaries.
2.
Stay physically and mentally active. Make time every day.
3.
Try something new. Even those working from home may not be quite as busy as usual. Take this unique opportunity to do something you always wanted to.
4.
Currently, news headlines are depressing. Watching too much of the news may make us psychologically anxious, so keep in touch, but limit yourself.
5.
Despite how it seems, we do still have some control over our lives and, if we just sit back, all we’ll do is worry. Research your rights and consider what steps you can take to improve your situation. Contact the bank about financial worries. Keep in touch with your HR department, if you have one. Take control.
6.
Stay connected with friends, colleagues and family members. Should they need it, helping others will also make you feel better.
7.
Use this experience to reflect on your job and lifestyle. Are your happy with your working hours and family time? Is there anything you can do about it?
Clients are contacting us clearly having used this time to consider their general situation and take control, whilst others are simply working through their admin to-do lists.
Whatever your motivation, if we can help with personal and family issues, employment or business concerns, please get in touch on 07866 547366 or richard.bates@cognitivelaw.co.uk. S
t Peter’s Church in Henfield celebrates an impressive anniversary this month – it’s 1,250 years since it is recorded that the Saxon Count Warbold was granted permission by King Osmond to build a church for his peasants on the hill overlooking the river. Life 1,250 years ago in 770AD would have been very hard. Anglo Saxon society was made up of several kingdoms and war was a regular event. People lived in small communities of around 100, in single room houses built from wood and thatch. Each family would share their house with their livestock and there would be a hole in the roof for a chimney. Saxon communities would have been mainly self-sufficient with villagers growing their own food and making their own clothes. Occupations would have included farmers, blacksmiths, bronze-smiths and potters. Most people lived on a very dull diet and only the very rich could afford meat on a regular basis. Travel was slow and dangerous and generally avoided where possible. Nothing remains of this original Saxon church (which was probably a simple wooden building with a thatch roof), but over the years St Peter’s has been rebuilt, restored and repaired many times over; most notably in the 13th, 14th, 15th and 19th centuries. The most recent restoration took place in 2008 when a new stone floor with underfloor heating was installed and the fixed (and rather woodworm eaten) Victorian pews were replaced with modern chairs, allowing for a much more open space of worship. Just as the church today is very different to that of 770AD, so is village life in Henfield. The population has massively increased to over 5,000 and supports a vibrant community of shops, cafes and pubs. Our close-knit village, with its fantastic primary school, doctors and dentists, is a wonderful place to live. Compared to their Saxon ancestors, most villagers benefit from ample leisure time and this is well catered for with various sports and cultural clubs and activities. Most things you need are available in the village and if they aren’t, you can have them delivered to your doorstep at the click of a button or you can jump on a bus or into your car to go and find them! What probably hasn’t changed, however, is the sense of community and the need for spiritual, emotional and social support. It’s likely that the original St Peter’s Church provided this for villagers and, 1,250 years later, the Church is continuing to do so. At the time of writing St Peter’s Church building is closed to the public (as are all other public spaces) because of the Coronavirus pandemic. But the St Peter’s Church community has adapted to the challenging circumstances and remains very much ‘open’. Both Vicar Revd Paul Doick and Curate Revd Harriet Neale-Stevens continue to offer emotional and spiritual support to parishioners, if regular

churchgoers or not. It’s just over the telephone rather than face-to-face. Sunday services are also continuing, streamed live online via the St Peter’s Henfield Facebook page and then uploaded to henfield.org (St Peter’s website) with incredible success and many followers. We’re looking forward to when the worst of the pandemic is over, when daily life returns to some sense of normalcy and St Peter’s Church will once again open its doors so we can explore what this historical building has to offer. For St Peter’s Church is a beautifully calm, spacious and light building. The history of the village is very much embedded in the fabric of the building, from the remaining 13th Century nave and narrow lancet windows (now in the clergy vestry), through to 15th century tower which hosts eight bells (arguably one of Sussex’s finest rings). The stained glass, which features some of the bestknown designers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries is stunning when the evening light pours in. And the new flooring and seating provides a flexible and contemporary space well suited to the modern spiritual, cultural and social life of the village. St Peter’s Church has been providing a welcoming place for Christian worship and prayer as well as place to celebrate baptisms, marriages and funerals for quite literally hundreds and hundreds of years. Today it also features strongly in the everyday life of the village community, hosting concerts, talks, charity events and community meetings as well as important village events like the Service of Remembrance when it is filled to capacity. Under normal conditions, the Church is open on a daily basis to the public for exploration or personal contemplation and prayer. St Peter’s Church has survived the ups and downs of 1,250 years of sometimes turbulent history and it will continue to do so.

Wildlife through the window: garden birds

Chaffinch
Dunnock
Blue Tit
Greenfinch
ID: Females are browner than the colourful males but both have distinctive white wing bars Song: Loud, cheerful, descending song may be repeated up to 3,000 times in a day Chaffinches have regional accents, and more than six million pairs breed here in the UK each year.
ID: The only British tit with blue on its head. Smaller than the Great Tit Song: Trilling ‘tseetsee-tsee’ Nest is often lined with aromatic mint or lavender as a natural disinfectant. Females lay 8 – 10 eggs and each chick needs to eat 100 caterpillars every day.

Lend a hand: Our garden birds are working hard to rear their young, with nests tucked away in hedges, trees and shrubs. Hungry parents will be glad of any food provided while they hunt for insects for their chicks, and they also need shallow water to drink and bathe in. Remember to keep feeders and bird baths clean.
ID: Like a streaky sparrow. Shy, often hopping low in undergrowth and hedges Song: A short jumble of notes thrown together in a hurry Despite strong pair bonds, females often mate with another male. With paternity uncertain, both will supply her chicks with food.

s the world shuts down around us, the uplifting role that wildlife plays in our lives becomes more vital than ever. As spring turns to summer, it’s a busy time for wildlife and there’s plenty to see from the window. This guide will help you identify some of the feathered friends you’re most likely to see - and hear - from home.
ID: Olive green with a flash of yellow on the wing, and a chunky beak Song: Twittering whistles and warbles with distinctive wheezing ‘zweee’ Sociable but notorious for squabbling. Numbers have dropped due to disease (Trichomonosis) that can spread at feeding stations, so it’s important to keep feeders clean. sales@bn5magazine.co.uk
Long-tailed Tit
Song Thrush
Starling
ID: Warm brown with heavily speckled chest, smaller than a Blackbird Song: Tuneful, repeating a phrase two or three times before moving onto the next May be seen or heard banging snails against a stone anvil. No other bird does this.
ID: Star-studded with a glossy sheen of purple and green Song: Chattering rattles, clicks, whistles and warbles. Also a skilled mimic Nest in tree holes, cavities and nest boxes. Females in a colony will synchronise egg-laying so that their fledglings emerge together.
Wren
Great Tit
House Sparrow
Goldfinch
ID: Tiny brown bird with a cocked tail. Common yet secretive Song: Volume is the key to ID - incredibly loud song with a distinctive trill The male builds six to 12 nests but only one is used by the female, who usually rears her young single-handedly.
ID: Males have a grey cap and black bib, females are brown Song: Cheerful chirping These sociable birds often nest in colonies, usually close to people. Some pairs will manage three broods a year.
01273 494002
Starling © Nigel Symington, Sussex Wildlife Trust
ID: Seriously cute with a very long tail, like a ball on a stick Song: Bubbly ‘prrrtprrrt’ and chattering ‘tsirrup’ Their barrel-shaped nests are made of moss and cobwebs, covered with lichens for camouflage and lined with hundreds of soft feathers.
Great Tit © Derek Middleton, Sussex Wildlife Trust
ID: Males are black with a yellow bill and eye-ring, females are dark brown Song: Mellow, whistling tune; ‘chinkchink’ alarm call Beautiful blue eggs are laid in nests hidden deep within hedges. Blackbirds may have four broods in a single season.
Long-tailed tit © Bob Eade, Sussex Wildlife Trust
Blackbird
ID: Large with a black head and chest stripe Song: Repetitive twonote ‘teacher-teacher’ sounds like a squeaky bicycle pump The chest stripe on the male is an indicator of status: the wider the stripe, the more attractive he is to females.
ID: Striking red face and bright yellow wing feathers Song: Liquid, tinkling twitter A group of goldfinches is called a charm, and they flock in large numbers outside the breeding season. BN5 Magazine | 29

HORTON GOLF CLUB a hidden gem
A
t the back of Henfield Business Park lies Horton Golf Club, a beautiful and unique golf course. With nine greens and eighteen tees and holes, this short but demanding course is enjoyed by over 120 members. Why unique? That takes us right back to how the club was founded. In 1974 a golf club was established on part of the Shoreham Cement Works estate. The members were a mixture of people who were employed at the works and others from the local area who loved golf. The name Horton Golf Club comes from this original site. There was no way these founding members could afford to pay for greens staff, a professional, a shop or any of the other trappings of traditional golf clubs. So they took the decision to run an artisan golf club, one in which the members looked after the course and managed their own affairs. When in 1991 the cement works decided to sell the land on which the course was built, the intrepid founders sought a new site by contacting local farmers who might have spare land. Three fields at the back of the Henfield Business Park were available. It took some imagination to see the ploughed fields as a golf course, but with the help of the farmer, John White, who helped grass the site, the work began. A club-house was obtained from a company working for Worthing Council at the end of building works for a new library. The company donated the temporary building as long as the club could arrange 34 | BN5 Magazine

JUNE 2020 | Local interest transport which it duly did. The development work was not easy. A founder member remembers the rough being so long that he saw two deer jumping through it, but could not see the dog chasing them because it was hidden in the grass! The members designed where the holes would go, built the greens and the tees, dug ponds to provide essential water and planted trees throughout the course. Each of the 20 founder members contributed £50 to purchase basic equipment and machines. For a year whilst the site was developed the members continued to play golf once a month at a course near Arundel. From those beginnings the club has grown and improved year-on-year, never forgetting the basic principles on which it was founded. Because the members maintain the course, they meet regularly and get to know each other. Regular Sunday morning competitions ensure people play with different partners each week and after 9 holes, there is a break for rolls, tea and coffee. These traditions, established from the beginning, mean there is a special social atmosphere at Horton Golf Club where members make friendships and look out for each other. That’s not to say members don’t take their golf seriously or that competition is not for real, but the key is enjoying golf together on a beautiful course.
We would love you to join us, whether you are an experienced golfer, a beginner, or somewhere inbetween. We promise you a warm welcome and hours of enjoyable frustration! Interested? Please contact David Bateson at secretary.hgc@outlook. com We look forward to hearing from you.

Thinking of selling post COVID-19? March was a significant month for business – Rishi Sunak’s first Budget on 11 March reduced the lifetime limit for Entrepreneurs’ Relief to £1m (from £10m) and of course the COVID-19 lockdown followed a few weeks after. Both will have a knock-on effect for anyone thinking of selling their business. The likely sale value may now be less, but the Capital Gains Tax (CGT) bill may well be higher. Certainly the figures will have changed either side of March. Whatever the reasons for contemplating a business sale, however the market performs, vendors will always wish to achieve the highest possible value with the least possible disruption and aggravation. Selling a business, in most cases, is a once in a lifetime experience and you only have one opportunity to get it right. Therefore it is important to appoint an adviser who knows the process and who can advise on how to avoid the pitfalls. More importantly they will ensure your interests are protected throughout the whole process. A good corporate finance adviser will be able to guide and help the owners to decide when the time is right to sell. In fact your adviser might even suggest buying another business first as a bolt-on; if the synergy is there, it should add significant value to your business in a relatively short time leading to the combined entity being highly marketable. Selling your business is very much like selling your house – if you spend some time ‘doing your house up’ then you are limiting the purchaser’s negotiating position. A bit of paint here and there, maybe some remedial work on dampness and so on, will all pay off when it comes to selling your property. It’s the same when it comes to selling your business – this pre-sale process called ‘grooming’ can significantly enhance the sale price. The grooming process is intended to present your business in the best possible light and is a crucial factor in achieving the best price. Your professional adviser should guide you through the areas which need to be addressed. These will include: 44 | BN5 Magazine

Quality of customers and earnings – try to secure future earnings and margins by extending customer and supplier contracts. Your trading growth and profitability should show a consistent trend, demonstrating year-on-year growth. • Asset performance – realise underutilised or unnecessary fixed assets and obsolete stock. Anything that is not used to maintain the earnings of the business should be sold or distributed. Prioritise the collection of your older debts; if necessary, write them off to clean up the Balance Sheet. • The commitment of the management team – a business is often only as strong as those managing and working for it. Offering key managers incentives and bonus schemes can ensure the long-term commitment of your staff to the business. • Appearance – tidy and clean the business premises and enforce a clear desk policy, to create the right first impression for any visitor. Your advisers will establish a value for the business and prepare a detailed Information Memorandum; they will identify a list of qualified potential buyers and then market your business to the potential buyers. A stage of negotiation follows, during which you will receive offers from interested buyers; the buyers will then conduct due diligence. You will receive and negotiate the sale and purchase agreement from the buyer and then structure and complete the documentation for the sale. Both parties sign the sale and purchase agreement and, once the conditions of the sale have been satisfied, the sale is closed and the business is sold. The average business sale takes from three to six months, however, the length of time varies between industry sectors and stages in the economic cycle. Finally, summarised below are some tips on how to successfully sell your business: • Appoint an experienced adviser to help you through the process • Get the timing right sales@bn5magazine.co.uk

Be realistic about the value of your business Groom your business to be attractive to buyers Consider the alternative exit options – be open minded Prepare a good sales memorandum Identify interested parties Keep the business operating at the same level, or higher, than it has done historically, until the deal is done Control the deal and negotiate sensibly Remember, you always have a choice not to sell!
