Care for Carers update
Henfield Shed rainbows
Editor’s Letter
As we go to print, Henfield High Street is slowly starting to emerge from the lockdown, businesses are tentatively re-opening their doors, quite often with new routines for us to learn. Not that we’re even nearing normality; there are many people still shielded and most children have not returned to school. People in our village have shown enormous care and kindness to each other, pulling together to help each other with shopping and medicines, making new friends and valuing good neighbours. One of the great strengths of a small high street filled with independent shops is their ability to be agile and to adapt. Sadly, not all of them could stay open; but when they could, many of these hard-working businesses have reinvented their ways of working to help us all and keep their staff employed. I am guessing many of them will be exhausted, and a little worried for the future. Please do your best to repay their hard work by pledging to spend a percentage of your shopping budgets in our High Street, if you can. We’ve experienced how important they are, can you even begin to imagine how difficult the past three months would’ve been without them all? Get right behind them now, because our village would be a sad place with an empty high street.

JULY 2020 | News
Henfield Haven under threat of closure as Impact Initiatives end contract Impact Initiatives, providers of dementia care at the Henfield Haven since their appointment by Henfield Haven CIO in November 2015, have withdrawn their services with immediate effect on 9 June 2020 leaving the future of the Haven uncertain. The news comes just a week after volunteers who saved the centre from closure in 2014 were celebrating receiving the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. Impact Initiatives stated in a letter to the Haven CIO that: “This is regrettable and due to the ongoing coronavirus situation leaving us unable to deliver the group-based services we have over the last five years, for the foreseeable future”. The Brighton-based charity will not enter into any consultation or serve the seven months’ notice provided for in their contract with the Henfield Haven CIO due to the extraordinary circumstances of the Covid-19 outbreak. They are in receipt of a West Sussex County Council grant to provide dementia services in Henfield and have stated that they intend to provide these services in another manner, away from the Henfield Haven. The future for the nine staff members employed by Impact Initiatives at the Henfield Haven is also uncertain; it is not known if they will face redundancy. The Henfield Haven CIO Trustees have been left stunned at the sudden withdrawal by Impact Initiatives and the threat this brings to the dementia services provided by the Haven, which are a lifeline for many families in Henfield. They believe that any attempt for an organisation to provide long term dementia services solely in the home or remotely would be vastly inferior to the gold-standard services the Haven has been proud to provide in its bright, purpose-built setting in the heart of Henfield. Malcolm Eastwood, a Trustee of the Henfield Haven CIO and also Chairman of Henfield Parish Council, said: “The timing of Impact’s decision to walk away from the Haven could hardly be worse, while we are working hard to re-open and ensure that our customers stay safe. The Henfield Haven has become an important part
01273 494002
of our community, particularly for those who have dementia and their carers. It is particularly distressing for the staff and volunteers who have worked so hard to create this great place. Even when closed because of Covid-19 the Haven has become the home of the Henfield Helpline with volunteers providing essential supplies to 500 elderly and vulnerable people in the village. Now our challenge is to extend that help to support the Haven in the hope that it can survive in a postCovid-19 world.” The Henfield Haven has been an unmitigated success and has been recognised as a shining example of volunteers mobilising to save, sustain and improve a critical service and community centre. In addition to providing several hundred high needs and carer support sessions each month, the Haven has a thriving café serving healthy, home cooked meals and also provides courses, activities and services to people of all ages, many of whom are elderly and isolated. Chairman of the Henfield Haven CIO Digby Stephenson said: “We were euphoric after receiving royal recognition for our 60 volunteers and we have received a steady stream of congratulatory messages from supporters far and wide. Impact’s sudden withdrawal is extremely regrettable and the timing, right in the middle of a global pandemic, has put us in a very difficult position. Impact Initiatives has been our service provider for the last five years and the relationship has been committed and successful from both parties. We are deeply disappointed that we have not been afforded the opportunity to help resolve Impact Initiative’s problems during the notice period. “Although shocked we are unbowed, the heart and soul of this community has been invested into the Henfield Haven. The services it provides were important back in 2015 and post Covid-19 they will be even more crucial. This is a major set-back, but we will not allow it to cast a shadow over the Haven.”

5,339 objections to the Mayfield proposal!
We would like to thank all members of the community that took part in the Public Consultation on the Draft Horsham District Local Plan. Despite the incredibly complex process, Mayfield Market Town’s (MMT) proposal received 5,339 separate objections from 1669 individuals and organisations. This represents over 50% of all the objections made across the main 9 large strategic sites. The MMT proposal received support from only 36 individuals. Horsham District Council said: “It can be seen that most comments received on sites were objections and that Land North East of Henfield (Mayfield) received the most comments in total.” The neighbouring local authority, Mid Sussex District Council, responded to the consultation in detail but only objected to one of the proposed development sites, clearly stating their position on MMT: “Mid Sussex does not support this allocation, nor does it consider that it is ‘sound’ in planning terms. It is not considered a sustainable or appropriate site and it is not supported by the infrastructure that would be expected for a development on this scale.” Please follow us on our website and social media, as we will be highlighting objections made by key organisations in the community in the coming weeks. We have taken another large step forward in our campaign, however the fight is not over and we will continue to keep you informed of the situation and prepare for the next round over the coming months. We hope you are all keeping healthy and safe; and managing to enjoy the wonderful and unspoilt countryside of the South Downs! www.lambs.org.uk

Henfield Museum - locked down, but not out
I have the immense good fortune to look after the costume collection at Henfield Museum. The collection isn’t huge, but contains gorgeous pieces of clothing from years gone by including ball gowns, nightdresses, uniforms and blouses. Over time I have written about the collection, given talks about the costumes and once had an exhibition of costume in Henfield library. This was all brought to an abrupt halt earlier this year so I decided that a bit of glitter, sparkle and flounces was what was needed and began to post weekly posts on the Henfield Museum Facebook page of beaded evening gowns, sequin covered capes and lace trimmed nighties. I’m up to week eleven now and gradually the posts began attracting more attention. The most popular item so far is a mauve cotton Victorian skirt with over 200 likes. A pair of Edwardian bridesmaids shoes were popular too, and a 1920s silver beaded flapper dress drew many loves as well as likes. Many likes, comments and questions have come from around the world including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Poland, the Ukraine and Vietnam. Several readers from neighbouring counties have said that they are going to visit the Henfield Museum when this is all over. But for me the very best likes and loves and comments have come from people in Henfield who are justifiably proud of having such a gem of a museum in their midst.

In recognition of the unprecedented challenges faced by businesses during the COVID-19 crisis, the Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure has taken the decision to waive the fee for the licensing of tables and chairs on pavements outside cafes and restaurants in West Sussex until 1 April 2021. However, businesses will still need to apply for a licence. These details will help council officers’ efforts to ensure the highway is controlled for public safety, such as ensuring social distancing measures are in place and that there are no obstructions for passers-by who have disabilities, such as the visually impaired. Roger Elkins, Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure, said: “We recognise the need to support local businesses as the country enters recovery from the COVID-19 crisis. This action supports the reopening of high streets across the county whilst ensuring we keep members of the public safe.” The council will be reviewing any licence fees for the current year which have already been paid and traders will be contacted.

Sandy Lane Saved Again!
Dove Nursery news
Dove Nursery re-opened on June 3rd after having to close due to Covid-19. The children were so excited to see their friends and have soon adapted to the new routines and lots of hand washing. We have been playing outside a lot and enjoying trips and games in the woods. We made lockdown monsters with cress growing as their hair, and collected sticks to make our own bubble wands. The children have also decorated pots for the Care for Carers project for care homes, and put their messages on tags attached to their pot. For information please visit our Facebook page or email dove_nursery@btinternet.com

Horsham District Council have again refused planning permission to Fairfax for housing development on the land north of Sandy Lane… for the second time. Henfield residents have fought a long battle since 2018, culminating in a government inspectors dismissal of Fairfax’s appeal in October 2019. Fairfax submitted another application for 35 houses during March coinciding with Covid 19 lockdown. Despite this, nearly 200 objections were received by Horsham District Council, with Henfield residents more determined than ever to protect this lovely spot. A donated bench is now installed enabling anyone to enjoy the beautiful south westerly rural views across the green field site towards the South Downs. Old Mill House, Sandy Lane and the surrounding landmarks of this historic part of Neptown also feature in the new Henfield heritage trail, with signage and QR codes to be deployed shortly. The heritage and landscape character reasons for refusal remain firmly in place, with Horsham District Council emphasising that Fairfax’s proposal does not conform to either Horsham Districts Planning Framework or Henfield’s emerging Neighbourhood Plan (which is now at pre final referendum stage) and therefore carries significant legal weight. Fairfax are expected to appeal again, however CPRH are confident, that with continued strong community support, that any appeal will be quashed once and for all, and are lobbying central government for planning policy changes to prevent developers undermining community-led housing plans.

Rosemary Broucke
Sadly, my friend Rosemary Broucke passed away last September at Red Oaks. She had lived in Henfield all her life and farmed at Woodhouse Farm, she was my friend and neighbour for 38 years. This beautiful memorial seat, made by her son Colin Broucke, is at Woodhouse Farm. It is here for walkers to use, in memory of a much loved lady. Please enjoy it if you pass.

QUEEN’S AWARD FOR HENFIELD HAVEN
H
enfield Haven CIO, a group of volunteers responsible for the Henfield Haven in Henfield has been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK. The Henfield Haven CIO volunteers came together when West Sussex County Council considered closing what was then the Henfield Day Care Centre as a cost-cutting measure. They worked with the Council to bring about a truly ground-breaking solution, which now provides much needed services for many vulnerable and isolated people in the community. The tired and unloved building was saved, restored and transformed it to what it is today. The volunteers worked tirelessly during the transformation and continue to do so, enabling the Henfield Haven to grow and react to community need. Their efforts include: Rescuing the grounds and gardens from an overgrown 18 | BN5 Magazine
jungle and creating a beautiful and tranquil oasis for visitors; making major changes to the internal layout including a new garden room extension; painting and decorating the building to create a light, bright and happy environment to work in and visit; creating a community drop-in café which helps to combat loneliness, as well as providing a village community resource to help break down the social barriers of dementia. The volunteers work in harmony with the Haven’s service provider, Sussex-based charity Impact Initiatives, giving care to high needs customers and help with other activities. Chairman of Henfield Haven CIO Digby Stephenson said: “The announcement of our QAVS reflects a fully deserved reward for the army of volunteers who have helped to achieve a truly amazing transformation. From a real threat of closure in 2014 the Haven has become a vital core of the Henfield community, providing a broad www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

range of services to help local people live life to the full, particularly those living with dementia.” “Currently closed to customers, The Henfield Haven answered a call to arms during the Covid-19 pandemic and is earning its spurs as the operations and distribution base for the Henfield Helpline, which has again brought out the best in the Henfield community spirit and willingness to help in adversity. I know that this ‘can do’ attitude and enthusiasm will be ready to resume and deliver the Haven’s vital work as soon as this becomes possible.” Malcolm Eastwood, Chairman of Henfield Parish Council said: “We were delighted to see that the Henfield Haven CIO has been awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service… who would have thought when we started on this journey with a sad, tired building, a closure notice and a handful of customers that the Henfield Haven would become such a vibrant and vital centre for

our community. To receive news like this during such difficult times for all of us is truly uplifting.” The Henfield Haven CIO is one of 230 charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year and one of four in West Sussex. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Recipients are announced each year on 2nd June, the anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation. Representatives of Henfield Haven CIO will receive the award from The Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex later this year. Furthermore, two volunteers are invited to attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May 2021, along with other recipients of this year’s Award.

Your Local Garden Machinery Specialist for Sales, Service and Hire It is surprising how many successful businesses are tucked away in Henfield, and Acacia Groundcare Equipment Rental is one of them. Based in Hollands Lane they have an interesting and diverse business. We chatted to the owners, Ritain Patel and Dale Hudson, to find out more. Tell us a bit about your business and what you do? We started out over 12 years ago supplying hire equipment to some of the companies that take care of the parks, golf courses and woodlands that we all enjoy. Our customers range from national commercial groundcare companies to local tree surgeons, landscape gardeners, golf clubs, schools, councils, private households… basically anyone who has some ground to care for! We have a fleet of high quality and sometimes quite specialist groundcare equipment. Our service and repair workshop has also built up a large domestic customer base who bring in their mowers, chainsaws, strimmers, etc, for service, repair and blade sharpening. They often hire our equipment too, for rotovating their allotment, shredding after heavy pruning, mowing large areas, digging trenches and post holes and more. We were very excited five years ago to move into retail with our MowersUK brand. We now sell a wide range of garden machinery and accessories from our showroom in Basingstoke, as well as online. More recently we have opened a small retail shop at our Acacia Henfield premises too.
Why are you different and what can customers expect from you? Everyone gets a friendly welcome when they come into the shop, and the team are extremely experienced, knowledgeable and happy to give advice. We have a display of a variety of garden equipment for sale, and we can bring any items across next day from our Basingstoke showroom for customers to view. So we believe we offer a friendly welcome, first-class advice and excellent service. Can you tell us a bit about your team? We have an amazing team of 18 dedicated and very experienced service engineers, drivers and support staff based across Henfield and Basingstoke. We are a very friendly bunch and we like to work hard but have a bit of fun at the same time. What is the best thing about running a business in Henfield? We love the rural environment. Being based at the end of Hollands Lane, we can walk out of the door and straight into the countryside. We also love the village community feel and friendly shops. For the business it is also an ideal base from which to service customers in the South East.

he response to our call for help in June’s BN5 Care for Carers project with Henfield Community Partnership has been wonderful and we’re really excited about some more projects in progress which will support our local carers, care homes and those living in our village in need of a helping hand. We’ve had hundreds of lovely gifts dropped into the Henfield Haven Helpline, ready for packaging into gifts for carers. Touchingly, those who have donated have also written a personal message on a gift tag to be attached to one of the packages. Thank you to everyone who has donated, your kindness is really appreciated. Players at Henfield Football Club’s U8s have been busy distributing hand creams to carers at local care homes including Red Oaks, Upper Mead, Terry’s Cross and Valerie Manor. The team raised money for the gifts through a goal scoring challenge inspired by Colonel Tom Moore. Team manager Tom Wilson said: “The players have 22 | BN5 Magazine
really enjoyed doing socially distanced drop offs of the hand creams to local heroes who have worked so hard, and continue to do so.” He adds: “The response to the gifts from teams at our local care homes has been amazing. They have been genuinely touched by such a small gesture.” Some of the money raised by the team will also be used for a future ‘Care for Our Carers’ project in Henfield. A total of 385 hand creams have now been distributed by the U8s, including to teams at St Barnabas and St Catherine’s hospices and workers at many Henfield shops. Children have been really busy painting, gluing, stickering and glittering to decorate some beautiful plant pots ready for filling with geraniums from Stonepit Nursery. These will then be delivered to people in care homes who are currently isolated and not enjoying as many visitors as usual. Our thanks go to Karen Searles and the children at St Peter’s Primary School, they decorated an incredible 60 pots! It’s now the www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

We’re extremely grateful for donations received by two local clubs – thank you for your generosity. The ‘Henfield Wall of Fame’ is on YouTube, please search for it and then click to subscribe for updates. Now, they want YOU to be a part of this by adding content! It is meant to be ‘fun’, entertaining, not too serious, and above all suitable for all ages. While initially this is a resource for people who

can’t get out, (so let’s bring Henfield to you in sight, sounds and spirit) the project will also document a ‘slice of time’ fixed in this curious period in which we live, and maybe even a talent showcase for the hidden stars of all types in our community! Content could include mobile phone shot video, taking us for a walk/run/cycle in the local countryside, TikTok type clips, music, photo carousels with background music on a range of subjects, for example old Henfield, current Henfield, Henfield life, wildlife and nature, music and entertainment – get creative and enjoy! Each contribution will be attributed to the provider, with links to their own website/social media. Content can be submitted to henfieldcp. info@gmail.com, but if the files are too large just drop us an email and we’ll send you a link to transfer the file.

he Henfield Shed closed its doors at the start of lockdown, along with all the other Charities and Clubs in the village. During lockdown we have kept in touch with each other via email, telephone chat and we even had a Trustee meeting via Zoom! We shared a number of quizzes, news and the odd joke or two! Although we were unable to work physically together, a number of jobs were completed for people in the village and latterly we have crafted a range of wooden hand-painted rainbows, which we made to fit onto window sills. These rainbows were made by a small group of Shedders and hand-painted by a couple of kind wives! They were offered for sale, with all the proceeds going to the Henfield ‘Caring for our Carers’ initiative, about which you will have read on other pages of BN5. The rainbows proved very popular and we received several requests for personalised rainbows, with words such as ‘Family’, ‘Care’, ‘Love’ and ‘Joy’ engraved into them. At the time of writing this article we have made over £200 which has been donated to Henfield Community Partnership in conjunction with BN5 magazine, and will be used to provide gifts and ultimately a celebration for all the carers in our village. The paint we used was kindly donated to

us by Paul @ Re-Discovered 4U and Southdown Galleries helpfully let us use their front window, while the shop had to remain closed during lockdown. The rainbows were also sold via our Henfield Shed Facebook page – if you’d like to keep up-to-date with what we do, please ‘like’ our Facebook page. With Government restrictions being eased as I write, we hope to be up and working again during the latter part of June, with the correct level of social distancing and with a rota in place to keep our numbers down per session, given the amount of space we have available to us. So, if you have discovered anything you would like to be repaired or restored during your enforced time at home, or if you want anything made, please get in touch via the following link: Info@HenfieldShed.org.uk and we will be straight back to you. We do request a voluntary contribution for any work we undertake, so that we can buy wood and sundries, and also pay our bills. The Henfield Shed meet every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday morning and we are located directly behind Southdown Galleries in the High Street – we look forward to meeting you soon!

s a charity, Warren Playgroup relies on fundraising to provide additional equipment, experiences and activities for the children that cannot be covered by day-today finances. Due to the popular ‘Good As New Sale’ having to be cancelled in May - leaving a large gap in this vital fundraising - Warren Playgroup Committee decided to put their time to good use during lockdown and started a planting project. The extended Playgroup family have been eagerly planting seeds and growing plants in exchange for donations to playgroup and they have been spreading planting joy throughout Henfield and the local area. Due to the tremendous effort of the children, their families and many others in the village, the project has really taken off and is bringing enjoyment to many. Everyone at Warren Playgroup wants to say a huge thank you and hopes that more and more people will join in and the project will continue to flourish over the summer months. There are many ways to get involved and support the project. You can join in by growing and donating the plants – vegetable, herb or flower; you can ‘purchase’ the plants for a small donation; or you can donate materials such as pots, compost or seeds that are needed to keep this project going. 26 | BN5 Magazine
Since the project started in April, over 300 plants have been grown. An array of flowering plants, fruits, herbs, vegetables and even a tree have been donated! Please follow the project’s Facebook page which is updated daily to see what is available. It really is worth a look. In May, the project evolved further when one Playgroup family introduced some woodwork into their contribution to the project. A little boy and his Dad made some solitary bee houses to celebrate World Bee Day. Over 20 of these have now been made and bought due to the high amount of interest; it was so lovely seeing these fly off to their new homes in the village. Before coronavirus, there was already a focus on the benefit of children doing more outdoor learning at Warren Playgroup, and for the last year and a half the committee has been investing time and energy into raising the funds to expand the outside learning areas. Finally, after a slight delay, the new woodland classroom is now in the process of being built and this will be a wonderful addition when the children can return to Playgroup. The money raised from the planting project will now enable us to enhance this area even further by purchasing fun, stimulating, educational equipment, making it a wonderful and fulfilling learning environment. sales@bn5magazine.co.uk
JULY 2020 | Local interest How the project works Plants are grown and donated and then advertised for sale through the Warren Playgroup Planting Project Facebook page. Here posts are updated daily when stock is sold and replenished; you can comment or send a message if you want to buy them. There are three drop off/collection points in Henfield and one in Partridge Green so you can choose the closest one to you. Plant donation and collection is contactless too to ensure everyone stays safe. If you are isolating please let us know and we will do our utmost to collect from or drop off the plants to your doorstep. In exchange for the plants, donations are asked to be made to the playgroup which can be made by BACS (details on Facebook page) or you can post cash through the letterbox at your collection point. You may see a suggested donation for a plant as this is a popular question, but ultimately we want everyone to enjoy the project, grow more plants and make your gardens pretty and full of vegetables, so please donate what you feel comfortable with. If you would like to donate or buy a plant please do get in touch, we would love to hear from you.

Henfield Club Remembrance Service 1923
Celebrating 100 years of the Henfield Club
T
he scale and intensity of the first world war had an enormous impact on everyone who experienced it, not least the millions of returning soldiers who faced incredible difficulties trying to re-integrate back into civilian life. Not only were many of them physically and mentally scarred by their experiences, but they were also faced with unemployment (particularly those who were disabled), wage cuts and very little health care. It was in this context that the Henfield Club came into being 100 years ago this month. Originally the Henfield Club began as a branch of The Comrades of the Great War, one of the four associations which represented the rights of exservice men and women who had served or had been discharged from service in the First World War. On 2 May 1919, a meeting was held by local ex-soldiers in the George Hotel on the High Street who decided to form a local branch. Instrumental in setting up the Comrades Club was a Mr J F Stephenson and Captain A G Miller (the first Club Chairman) and under these two it grew “to a strong and energetic maturity.”1
Meetings continued to be held in the George Hotel but as membership increased from the original 54 men, the committee started searching for premises of their own. Finally, at the beginning of 1919 it was announced that they would purchase the former Scout House at the end of Cagefoot Lane (formerly known as Claremont Villa) and on Wednesday 15 July 1920 the permanent home of the Henfield branch of The Comrades of the Great War association was formally opened. Nationally, the aims of the Comrades included: to perpetuate the memory of those who lost their lives fighting in the Great War; to preserve the spirit of comradeship; to safeguard the interests of ex-members of the services; to support the employment of discharged soldiers and sailors; to secure adequate pensions; and to promote the welfare of war widows and orphans. At a local level, the objectives of the Comrades was probably more socially orientated: the Henfield Club held frequent social ‘smoking concerts’ where members and local residents performed acts to entertain each other. Although women

were not allowed to be Club members in these early days, they were invited to these social events. The Henfield Club has evolved and changed over the past 100 years. In 1921 The Comrades of The Great War amalgamated with three other ex-service associations to form the British Legion and in 1923 a war memorial in the form of a granite cross was erected outside the Club. Today, the objectives of the Club are to provide a social facility for the people of Henfield and to support the aims and objectives of the Royal British Legion. It certainly hasn’t forgotten its origins: a millennium project funded the creation of two war memorial tablets which were placed either side of the original granite cross, listing the names of those who died in both World Wars. These were unveiled on Remembrance Sunday 2000 and continue to provide the focus of the villages’ Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday events. The Club is also extremely proud to be one of very few establishments in the UK allowed to fly the Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and Army flags alongside the Union Flag after permission was requested in 2001. The flags are flown at different times of the year to commemorate various military events: The RAF flag is flown on 1st

April (formation of the RAF) and 15th September (Battle of Britain); The Navy flag is flown on 31st May (Battle of Jutland) and 21st October (Battle of Trafalgar); The Army flag is flown on 23rd September (Battle of El Alamein); and all three flags are flown together on the last Saturday in June (Armed Forces Day). Just as it was 100 years ago, the Henfield Club is still one of the social venues at the heart of village. Whilst members are no longer limited to ex-servicemen, they can still drop in for a drink and a chat at the bar, or to play snooker, darts and chess. The Club still organises evening entertainments (including music, magic, comedy and quizzes), as well as more family-orientated events during the day and they continue to play an active role in village events such as the Festival of Gardens & Arts. The Henfield Club had great plans for its centenary celebrations but at the time of going to print, it looked unlikely that these would be going ahead due to the unprecedented situation the country finds itself in. However, wherever we are on Wednesday 15 July, lets raise a glass to those who had the foresight to create such an enduring and well-loved village institution – here’s to the next 100 years!

THANK YOU HENFIELD for your support.
I sold a street magazine for 22 months on Henfield High Street. I had many promotions which I personally financed, all of which were tremendous fun and each a success. Thank you.
I am now looking to sell the remainder of my back issues.
Preferably to ONE WONDERFUL PERSON.
Each of these magazines cost me £1.25 and I am selling them as my personal property. I am not and never have been an employee or a representative of any corporation. I have 279 copies to sell at £2.50 each, or in packs of 10 at £25 each.

Volunteering for the
Henfield Helpline W
hilst there are many things that people would like to forget about 2020 already, the Henfield Helpline is not one of them – it has been an outstanding local success! Not only has it helped record numbers of vulnerable older people, but also huge numbers of people have volunteered their time too. The premise is very simple, matching volunteers who have time to spare with individuals who need simple tasks carrying out for them such as food shopping, prescription collection, or dog walking. It’s a true community endeavour, supported by all key village organisations including Henfield Parish Council, Henfield Community Partnership, The Henfield Haven, St Peter’s Church, The BP Guild, The Self Help Group, Impact Initiatives, BN5 magazine and Henfield Hub – all working together to support vulnerable older people in our village. When Martyn and Marina Lewis from Staples Barn Lane decided to volunteer for the Henfield Helpline, they wanted flexibility, a purpose to their day, and fun! They went down tiny lanes they’d never seen, bought vegetables they’d never heard of, and met people they’d never seen in Henfield before. “When we volunteered, we wanted to get involved in the village only, and for a specific period of time” said Marina. “We’d taken early
01273 494002
retirement from responsible jobs, and just fancied being foot soldiers, for a change.” said Martyn. And volunteering with the Henfield Helpline meant they knew their efforts would be smoothly managed and have immediate impact. Not only did they discover new parts of Henfield, but they also learnt about Hispie cabbage, and selected the days and times when it was convenient for them to volunteer. “I’ve done loads of voluntary work over the years,” said Marina, “and the key is to enjoy yourself! Be open to the new experiences and people it introduces you to, and have a laugh!” The Henfield Helpline came together as a response to a very specific need to support older people in the village who were self-isolating at the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic. But as the pandemic recedes, there is still very much a need for volunteers - For an informal chat on how you might be able to get involved, please call Belinda or Digby on 01273 494420 or email helpline@henfieldhub.com. It doesn’t matter whether you have a just couple of spare hours a week or even a month – they would love to hear from you.

T
he Friends of Henfield Museum are running a project to help future generations understand how it was for us living through this extraordinary time. We are asking people to write a ‘day in my life of lockdown’, describing what they are doing, the worries and maybe the unexpected pleasures they are experiencing. Everyone will be coping differently, and we welcome as many stories as possible, which will be collected and stored as a record for the future. We are fortunate to be living in this lovely village, with beautiful walks in easy reach and kind neighbours and the Helpline volunteers providing support. We are all however facing strange and difficult times, our high street businesses struggling to survive, and some facing possible closure. We are missing our families and friends, above all missing hugging our children and being physically close to people. We have discovered things like Zoom meeting room apps, Skype, Facetime and different ways of contacting each other. Some of us have much more time to discover new and different ways of entertaining
01273 494002
ourselves, others have much less time as they struggle with home schooling and working from home. Some of us have been ill, or nursed others who are ill, and some have born the terrible sadness of bereavement at this time. And our carers and key workers are all facing danger in their jobs. The best social history is that written at the time, by people living through the events. We have an opportunity to create a record of experiences of people here in Henfield, for posterity. We hope future generations will not have to live through a pandemic such as Covid 19, but it is important for them to know about it. Each ‘Day in the Life’ will be stored in the Museum archive, for people to read: they might be collected into a publication, or used in our schools and will be a record of how Henfield felt, managed and suffered during this time. Submissions can be emailed as an attachment to friendsofhenfieldmuseum@gmail.com or you can contact Rose Sharp on 07483 442482 to find out how you can deliver your lockdown stories by hand.

I
f you are looking for a great place to have a stag night then Henfield is your answer! Our village is a hotspot for the UK’S largest beetle, the stag beetle, an insect that has become so scarce that it is now a red-data list species which means that the population has declined by over 50% in the last 40 years or so. It is very much confined to the south of England and one of my earliest memories as child (here we are talking about the time when the world was still black and white) is my brother and myself collecting well over 20 stag beetles in a pit in the garden of our South London home. These magnificent creatures live for most of the time as a larvae just below the surface and feeding on decaying wood for up to 6 to 7 years before emerging as an adult. The male, with its marvellous pair of antler horns, flies off to try and find a female to breed, which they have to do in a hurry as they only live for about 3 weeks in this final stage of their life. Adults can’t feed on solid foods once they have emerged, relying on fat reserves they have built up to see them through the rest of their lives, though they can drink sap or juice from soft fruit laying on the ground. During the daytime the males will stay in the sun to absorb enough energy for them to fly around at dusk in search of the females. Females themselves tend not
01273 494002
to fly so much, they walk short distances from the place where they emerged as an adult and, having mated, they will return to that same spot to lay their eggs. They lay their eggs in rotting wood or the base of a tree stump, particularly just below the surface. Rotting elm was a favoured habitat for stag beetles so with the arrival of Dutch elm disease had a significant impact on their population. A decline in their numbers has continued through loss of habitat, increased development across the south of England plus the fact that they are drawn to warm surfaces so like to bask on pavements and roads where they are increasingly crushed by traffic and feet. Predation by cats, crows, foxes can also have an impact, as do humans who are scared by these’ fearsome’ creatures or they are under the misapprehension that they are damaging wood, so then crush them underfoot Because of its scarcity, it is a protected species and it is therefore illegal to wilfully kill or harm them. The PTES (People’s Trust for Endangered Species) is monitoring the stag beetle population and are asking people to submit records of their sightings and at the end of the season we will look to extract all the sightings from Henfield. Sightings can be posted on their website at www.ptes.org/get-involved/surveys/garden/ great-stag-hunt/stag-hunt-survey/

Tax reliefs for working from home
What payment can I make to my employees to compensate them for using their home as a workplace? If an employee is working from home under ‘homeworking arrangements’, their employer can reimburse the incremental costs incurred by the employee at a flat rate of £6/ week or, if records are kept to justify the costs, the actual amounts spent. While the government is recommending that employees work at home, it is expected that this will be accepted by HMRC as a ‘homeworking arrangement’. The sustained period of homeworking is ‘regular’ and it is mainly happening on instruction from the employer which would represent an ‘agreement’.
As access to technology is essential to effective homeworking, can I pay for my employees’ broadband costs? The monthly cost of an employee’s broadband connection does not change with usage, so HMRC will not allow a tax/NI exempt reimbursement of broadband costs. However, if the employee does not already pay for a broadband internet connection at home, and needs one in order to work from home under ‘homeworking arrangements’, the broadband fee is an additional household expense that the employer can reimburse, tax-free as a homeworking expense.
Most of the costs an employee incurs regarding their home are incurred regardless of whether they use it for work, for example, mortgage interest, rent, council tax or water rates. These expenses do not increase with use so cannot be included in the incremental cost of working at home. However, an employer can reimburse incremental costs such as additional costs of heating and lighting the work area, the cost of business telephone calls or the metered cost of increased water use. This exemption cannot be claimed where the payment is made under a salary sacrifice scheme (i.e. the employee agrees to reduce their taxable salary by £6 per week in exchange for a tax-free reimbursement of £6 of homeworking costs).
What equipment or facilities can I make available to my employees without creating a tax problem for them? There is no tax or NI where an employer provides their employees with supplies and services that are provided other than on the employer’s premises (e.g. employees who work at home or while travelling), and are provided for the sole purpose of enabling the employee to perform the duties of the employment, and the employee uses in performing the duties of the employment, and providing any use for the employee’s private purposes is not significant.
60 | BN5 Magazine
For example, this exemption covers the provision to employees of office furniture and equipment such as a desk or office chair; stationery and normal office or workshop materials and supplies; sales@bn5magazine.co.uk
an additional home telephone line intended for business calls only; a laptop computer or other computer equipment. This exemption cannot be used to apply to building work carried out on the employee’s home or the construction of a home office in the garden. Can I reimburse my employees for any office equipment they have purchased themselves to allow them to work at home during the lockdown period? A new and temporary tax exemption has been announced to allow employers to reimburse employees for items of office equipment they have purchased themselves. The exemption will apply to reimbursements paid to employees from 16 March to 5 April 2021 provided that the equipment was purchased by the employee for the sole purpose of enabling them to work from home as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak and any use for the employee’s private purposes is not significant.
employee able to choose between working at the employer’s premises or elsewhere. The circumstances detailed above, which permit employees to claim a tax deduction themselves, were drawn up before the possibility of Coronavirus was contemplated. HMRC could argue that working at home as a result of the current government guidance does not fall within these circumstances, but this risk feels reasonably low. If the employee accepts that there is a risk that HMRC could challenge the deduction, they could make it with full disclosure to HMRC on the basis of the claim. For a 20% taxpayer, a claim of £1,000 of expenses will give them a £200 tax refund. For a 40% taxpayer, the refund increases to £400. If the employee does not complete a Tax Return and the expenses being claimed are less than £2,500 in a Tax Year, the claim can be made on a form P87. This can be done online. Otherwise, the claim will need to be made on a Tax Return.
I suggest that employers create a policy setting Paul Samrah, Partner out the circumstances whereby reimbursements Moore Kingston Smith LLP will be made making clear that the ‘sole purpose’ T: 01737 781546 E: psamrah@mks.co.uk test will be met. The policy should also state that, on the basis that the employer is meeting the cost of these assets, any personal use should be kept to a minimum. In practice, provided there is an appropriately worded policy in place, HMRC does not require the employer to attempt to monitor personal use of the home office equipment. My employees have paid for heating, lighting and other homeworking costs that my business is not going to reimburse. Can they claim any tax relief for these expenses they have incurred? Employees can claim a tax deduction for expenses that are ‘wholly, exclusively and necessarily’ incurred in the performance of their duties of employment. When applying this rule to expenses they have incurred while homeworking, HMRC will normally only allow a tax deduction if the duties that the employee performs at home are duties that an employee has to carry out, representing all or part of the central duties of the employment. Those duties cannot be performed without the use of appropriate facilities; no such appropriate facilities are available to the employee on the employer’s premises; at no time either before or after the employment contract is drawn up is the
